From the late Carboniferous to the early Permian, multiple pulses of glaciation and deglaciation have been caused by the LPIA. The Pennsylvanian period experienced phases of recovery, proliferation, and decline, ultimately forming a reef system distinctly different from that of the Mississippian period. During the late Bashkirian to Moscovian, the metazoan reef experienced a limited resurgence, with reef predominantly formed by chaetetid developing in the United States, northern China, and Japan. During the Kasimovian to Gzhelian, the phylloid algal reef dominated the global reef systems. In the late Pennsylvanian, bioconstruction cases and paleoenvironmental proxies in southern Guizhou Province were studied to investigate the composition, recovery, and evolutionary processes of the bioconstructions as well as their response to environmental variations during this period. Several bioconstructions have been reported in the Lumazhai section of Houchang Town, Guizhou Province, southern China, from the Moscovian to the Gzhelian. The upper Carboniferous strata are well-preserved and continuously exposed. The continuous strata, abundant fossils, and diverse bioconstructions provide excellent research materials for exploring the mutual constraints between organisms and their environment. This study identified ten microfacies, whose vertical evolution indicated significant changes in the depositional environment related to relative sea-level fluctuations. Skeletal grains are widely present in these facies. Among them, foraminifera, algae, bryozoans, crinoids, and Tubiphytes are the most common and exhibit distinct distribution characteristics in various environments. Quantitative statistics, CCA and theoretical ecospace have been utilized to examine and interpret environmental impact factors. Quantitative analysis of their relative abundance and distribution patterns provides insights into the complex interactions between organisms and environmental factors. The relative abundances of different organisms and factors controlling their bioconstructions are influenced by relative sea-level changes. CCA analysis reveal that hydrodynamic conditions are the primary influencing factor. Variation trends in average tiering and motility reveal the characteristics of biological communities during environmental changes in phylloid algae and microbial bioconstructions. These bioconstructions are not directly correlated with changes in environmental factors, and the biological communities in phylloid algae mounds and biostromes exhibit similar organism compositions and ecological niches across different environments. Liaoceratops is a small basal neoceratopsian dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota of western Liaoning, China. Because its postcranial skeleton is lacking, its behaviour and palaeoecology remain poorly understood. By using computed tomography (CT), we reconstructed the cranial endocast and endosseous labyrinths of an adult individual of Liaoceratops yanzigouensis (PMoL-AD00097). Analysis and comparisons indicate that the brain, olfactory bulb and inner ear of adult Liaoceratops more closely resemble those observed in adult specimens of the basal ceratopsian Psittacosaurus than those in more derived ceratopsians. The relatively large olfactory bulb, discernible floccular lobes, and relatively long semicircular canals suggest that the adult Liaoceratops had a keen sense of smell, a well-developed sensory input for the reflexive stabilisation of gaze and posture, and a nearly horizontal head posture. Based on its relatively short cochlear ducts, adult Liaoceratops likely vocalised at and heard more efficiently to relatively high frequencies than the derived ceratopsian Pachyrhinosaurus and Triceratops. A late Kasimovian (Pennsylvanian) coral reef is reported in the Yanbanzhai (YBZ) area, southern Guizhou Province, South China. The YBZ coral reef, with a thickness of approximately 5.5 m and a lateral exposure of nearly 50 m, is primarily composed of the colonial rugose coral Fomichevella. The fusulinids collected from the reef indicates a late Kasimovian age. Five microfacies types have been identified, including coated bioclastic grainstone, coral (Fomichevella) framestone, bioclastic wackestone, bioclastic grainstone, and peloidal grainstone. The vertical evolution of the microfacies in the YBZ coral reef indicates major sedimentary environmental changes associated with relative sea‐level changes. The growth of the reef‐builder Fomichevella was controlled by the transgression and regression. Deep water promoted the upward expansion of Fomichevella, while shallow water inhibited its growth. Published records of atmospheric pCO2 estimation and sea‐surface temperatures, combined with geochemical proxies, confirm a warm climatic period during the late Kasimovian. This is an interglacial period conducive to the growth of the coral reef. Sea‐level and climate changes associated with the Late Palaeozoic ice age (LPIA) are interpreted as significant controls of the development of the YBZ coral reef. This research of the YBZ coral reef in South China provides practical palaeobiological evidence for global sea‐level rising during the late Kasimovian period caused by the high‐latitude Gondwana delaciation. The study of the palaeoenvironment of the Early Cretaceous has been a significant research topic, largely due to the "Jehol Biota" in western Liaoning and the important prospect of fossils in Dakangpu Layer. Based on the sedimentology of Dakangpu Layer, it is helpful to get a deeper understanding of the living environment of the "Jehol Biota." Varves are highly developed in the Dakangpu Bed of lower Cretaceous Yixian Basin in western Liaoning, China, supplying reliable and high‐quality proxies to explore the palaeoclimate. This paper reconstructs the palaeo‐lake environment and palaeoclimate, using petrography, facies associations, varves components, and geochemistry. Detailed petrographic studies helped to recognize 11 lithofacies which were grouped into two facies associations: Shallow lake and deep to semi‐deep lake sequences. The delicate structure of varves in the Dakangpu Bed were divided into two categories: Clastic and endogenic. Additionally, two sub‐types of clastic varves have been discovered, with distinct components, thickness, and distribution in vertical sequence. Nineteen representative samples of varves reveal that rare earth and trace elements have a similar change trend. The composition, formation, and preservation of the varves in the Dakangpu Bed depicted a deep lake, with stratified water and oxygen‐depleted bottom layer environment. The U/Th ratios and V/Cr ratios are in the ranges of 0.37–1.55 and 0.97–10.47 respectively, supporting the redox environment's minor fluctuation. The varve thickness, flood frequency, sporopollenin collections, and geochemical data indicated that precipitation and humidity decreased gradually in the sedimentary period, and the climate changed to warmer and drier, with fluctuations in the middle to later periods. This study focuses on the Tianshifu Basin, eastern Liaoning, China, which is filled with Lower–Middle Jurassic fluviolacustrine sediments rich in macroplants. Our aim is to explore the continental climate features of the late Early Jurassic period. The composition of the Early–Middle Jurassic flora and the carbon isotopic ratios of organic matter, total organic carbon, total organic nitrogen and sulphur of the rock samples from the Changliangzi section (the upper part of the Lower Jurassic deposits) have been investigated. Based on the flora, eastern Liaoning was generally characterized by temperate and humid conditions during the Early–Middle Jurassic period, but with rising temperatures during late Early Jurassic time. The sediments of the Changliangzi section show a transformation from shallow-lake facies to deep-lake facies. A positive organic carbon isotope excursion correlates with the deepening of this palaeolake, considered to be caused by climate warming. The late Early Jurassic climate warming indicated by floral and isotopic evidence corresponds to the climatic events recorded elsewhere in marine and continental sequences during the Toarcian Age, the so-called Toarcian Anoxic event, and may be associated with enhanced global greenhouse warming. The genesis of dolomite is an intensively debated and extensively studied problem in the field of carbonate sedimentology. This study focuses on the dolomite of the Dapu Formation in the Guixinan area, with the aim of deciphering the mechanism of dolomitization in the Dapu Formation. Three types of sedimentary environment, including the open marine of inner ramp, the restricted marine of inner ramp, and the shoal of inner ramp, have been identified. Three types of dolostone (DI, DII and DIII) identified in the study area with massive structure had close relationship with fault structures, and contacted with limestone in curved diffuse way on the outcrop. Both of the above points indicated diagenetic dolomite. Three types of dolomite (D1, D2 and D3) displayed similar dark—light purple red luminescence, indicating that the characteristics of their diagenetic fluids were similar. The planar-s to nonplanar dolomite crystals indicated that the temperature was more than 50 °C. The mineral assemblage including D2, D3, and silicate minerals (feldspar, tremolite and actinolite) suggested contact metamorphism and tht the diagenetic fluid was rich in silicon and magnesium. The dolomitization process was not influenced by the leaching of meteoric water in surface or shallow buried environment and hydrothermal fluids, based on the corrected REE characteristics. The range of the δ18O of dolostone samples showed that the burial dolomitization had taken place in high-temperature environment. The lower 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the dolostone samples than the coeval seawater meant that the diagenetic fluid was derived from the alteration of mid-ocean ridge basalt. Based on the geologic setting, it was speculated that the burial dolomitization was driven by the hydro-tectonic processes in the passive margin burial diagenesis hydrologic realm. In brief, magnesium came from the low-temperature alteration of ocean basalts, the thermohaline and compactional flow supplied hydrodynamic condition, and the synsedimentary fault zones-supplied channels. Based on the cluster analysis technique, the prediction technology of mineral resources in the mining area is studied and the collected geochemical data are sorted out. Thirty-nine chemical elements of the data are clustered and six relatively stable regions are obtained. Correlation analysis of the geochemical data in four regions is carried out. Through the correlation between the elements and the characteristic elements of each deposit, predicting the possible resources and types in each region, a line chart of the content of 39 elements at different sampling points in each region is drawn. The results of the preliminary prediction and the results of the relevant analysis are combined to obtain the possible resources and resource types of the four regions. Finally, by combining the occurrence environment of each deposit with the geological data of each area, the types of mineral resources and resources in the area are further determined more accurately. We collected, processed, identified, and analyzed the spores and pollen samples from the Zhuanchengzi Bed of the Yixian Formation in the Yingwoshan area of western Liaoning. As a result, we confirm a palynomorph assemblage of Cicatricosisporites-Protoconiferus. The pollen was primarily from gymnosperms, dominated especially by conifer pollen. Pteridophyte spores were less common and some questionable angiosperm pollen occurred occasionally. The age of the palynomorph assemblage is dated as the late Valanginian or Hauterivian-Barremian stage, the Early Cretaceous. The study applies the concept of Palynological Vegetation based on palynological spectra and the paleoecological characteristics of palynological taxa for the first time. Palynological vegetation type, climatic zone type, and humidity type are divided quantitatively for the Zhuanchengzi Bed in the Yixian Formation of western Liaoning. We then obtained the evolutionary trends. The results showed that the overall climate was warm and humid during the deposition period of the Zhuanchengzi Bed in the Yixian Formation. Palynological vegetation types are various and include coniferous forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest, grass, and shrubs. The local temperature changed from warm to much warmer and from a semi-humid to humid climate. Palynological vegetation types are always dominated by coniferous forest. The coexistence of deciduous broad-leaved forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest, shrubs, grass, and some xerophytic plants indicates vertical zonation and seasonal climate change The vertical vegetation types and the warm humid climate may imply a large geomorphological contrast in the Yixian Formation of western Liaoning. Fossils of the remarkable dromaeosaurid Microraptor gui and relatives clearly show well-developed flight feathers on the hind limbs as well as the front limbs. No modern vertebrate has hind limbs functioning as independent, fully developed wings; so, lacking a living example, little agreement exists on the functional morphology or likely flight configuration of the hindwing. Using a detailed reconstruction based on the actual skeleton of one individual, cast in the round, we developed light-weight, three-dimensional physical models and performed glide tests with anatomically reasonable hindwing configurations. Models were tested with hindwings abducted and extended laterally, as well as with a previously described biplane configuration. Although the hip joint requires the hindwing to have at least 200 of negative dihedral (anhedral), all configurations were quite stable gliders. Glide angles ranged from 3° to 21° with a mean estimated equilibrium angle of 13.7°, giving a lift to drag ratio of 4.1:1 and a lift coefficient of 0.64. The abducted hindwing model's equilibrium glide speed corresponds to a glide speed in the living animal of 10.6 m∙s-1. Although the biplane model glided almost as well as the other models, it was structurally deficient and required an unlikely weight distribution (very heavy head) for stable gliding. Our model with laterally abducted hindwings represents a biologically and aerodynamically reasonable configuration for this four-winged gliding animal. Hybrid carbonates, defined as the combinations of in situ abiotic, microbial, and skeletal precipitates, have changed with the biological and environmental conditions throughout geological history. After a long interval of dual-hybrid carbonates, the triple hybrid carbonates became predominant in the late Pennsylvanian and lasted until the Middle Triassic. The organic reefs of the upper Moscovian–Kasimovian (mid–late Pennsylvanian) strata of Guizhou, South China, are composed of abundant microbial carbonates, abiotic marine cements, and skeletal organisms, which are classified as triple hybrid carbonates. Microbial boundstones consisting of aragonitic cements (e.g., botryoidal cements) and microbial micrite are the major contributors to the reefs, as framework constructors, cavity fillers, and hard substrate for the encrusting metazoans. Skeletal components (e.g., the colonial rugose coral Ivanovia) and stromatolitic microbial carbonates could build simple frameworks with the growth cavities filled by syndepositional marine cements, automicrite, and carbonate particulate sediments. In situ phylloid algae normally form patch reefs and biostromes with abundant microbial micrite and peloids, while algal fragments contribute to the skeletal–cement–microbial reefs as large grains encrusted by microbial carbonates or marine cements. Petrographic features suggest the reefs formed at a shelf margin or upper slope setting with active water circulation. The evolution of Carboniferous organic buildups was primarily driven by changes in reef-building organisms, closely linked to external conditions, specifically seawater chemistry and paleoclimate. The ubiquitous triple hybrid carbonates in South China reefs, in agreement with Pennsylvanian tropical shallow-water reefs in their components, are proposed to derive from the interaction between decreasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, high seawater Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio, warm tropical water, and the evolution of skeletal organisms in the Pennsylvanian. We suggest that some of the most avian dromaeosaurs, such as Sinornithosaurus, were venomous, and propose an ecological model for that taxon based on its unusual dentition and other cranial features including grooved teeth, a possible pocket for venom glands, and a groove leading from that pocket to the exposed bases of the teeth. These features are all analogous to the venomous morphology of lizards. Sinornithosaurus and related dromaeosaurs probably fed on the abundant birds of the Jehol forests during the Early Cretaceous in northeastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adakitic dikes with zircon ages of ~120–118 Ma are identified in the Xiejiagou gold deposit, Jiaobei terrain. The Early Cretaceous intermediate-acidic dikes include monzonite, quartz monzonite, and monzogranite, which have SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Na2O contents ranging from 61.01 to 74.72 wt. %, 14.42 to 17.28 wt.%, 2.55 to 4.45 wt.%, and 3.09 to 4.64 wt.%, respectively. The dikes are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) (e.g., Rb, Sr, and Ba) and light rare earth elements (LREEs), but are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs) (e.g., Nb, Ta) and heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). They are also characterized by continental crust-like isotopic compositions: whole-rock δ18O = 7.6–9.9‰, (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70893–0.71036, and εNd(t) = −13.16 to −17.06. Assimilation and fractional crystallization are limited, and partial melting of source rock is the main mechanism in controlling the compositional variation. The high Sr/Y (41.51–93.25) and (La/Yb)N (22.9–44.7) ratios imply that the dikes have affinities similar to adakitic rocks. The regional geological setting, coupled with the geochemical and isotopic data, indicate that the adakitic dikes were unlikely produced by partial melting of a subducted oceanic slab or a thickened/delaminated lower crust, or AFC processes of mantle-derived magmas. We conclude that the adakitic dikes are generated by partial melting of lower crust which was triggered and modified by underplating of the lithospheric mantle. We also propose that the eastern part of the North China Craton experienced severe thinning in the Early Cretaceous (~135–120 Ma), and the lithospheric thinning is related to delamination of the lower crust. The Anshan–Benxi granite-greenstone belt (ABGB) in the Eastern Block of the North China Craton mainly comprises supracrustal rocks of amphibole plagioclase gneisses, plagioclase amphibolites, chlorite schists, biotite schists, quartzites and banded iron formations (BIFs), and intrusive monzogranitic to syenogranitic gneisses. Based on geology, spatial distributions, lithologies and zircon U-Pb geochronology, the metavolcanic rocks of the southern ABGB can be divided into the ∼2527 Ma southern plagioclase gneiss group, ∼2536 Ma southern amphibolite group, ∼2574 to 2560 Ma northern chlorite schist group and northern amphibolite group from south to north. These rocks outcrop as stratified and stratoid beds, whereas some occur as enclaves within later intrusive K-rich granitic gneisses. The southern plagioclase gneiss group exhibits calc-alkaline andesite compositions with high MgO, Cr, and Ni, fractionated REE patterns and depletion in Nb–Ta, which resemble high magnesian andesite (HMA) and are derived from the partial melting of sub-arc mantle peridotite that was previously metasomatized by slab melts. The southern amphibolite group has tholeiitic basalt compositions with slight enrichment in LREEs and high Nb–Ti concentrations but low (Nb/La) PM ratios, which coincide with Nb-enriched basalt and are generated by the remelting of residues of sub-arc mantle after the extraction of HMA melts. The northern schist group shows high-K calc-alkaline andesite-dacite compositions and have highest silica and potassium, and obvious enrichment in LREEs and LILEs and depletion in Nb–Ta, which are comparable to the sanukitoid series rocks. These rocks probably formed by low-degree partial melting of a sub-arc mantle wedge that was metasomatized by slab-derived fluids. The northern amphibolite group exhibits tholeiite compositions with unfractionated REE patterns and low (Nb/La) PM ratios, which are consistent with back-arc basin basalts (BABB) and are produced by partial melting of depleted mantle. Combined with lithological associations of the HMA, NEB, sanukitoid-like rocks and BABB-like rocks, the Anshan–Benxi granite-greenstone belt was produced under a convergent plate environment. Both the zircon εHf values and petrogenesis indicate that the four groups of the metamorphic volcanic rocks directly contributed to continental crustal growth. Integrating with the widespread ∼2.5 Ga syenogranites and subordinate K-rich granitoids that were derived from reworking of ancient crust, we propose that the ABGB experienced a significant episode of continental growth dominated by a subduction-related lateral accretion accompanied with contemporaneously strong reworking of ancient crustal materials. The beginning of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age was characterized by localized events with small ice depocenters occurring in South America and a series of cyclic shallow-water limestones in far-field regions, in late Visean to Serpukhovian. This paper documents two topmost Visean–Serpukhovian sections in Guangxi, South China: a stromatolite-bearing deep-water succession in Helv village and a shallow-water succession in Dujie village. Seventeen microfacies types have been recognized and grouped into six microfacies associations. The vertical evolution of the microfacies associations from deep-water to shallow-water depositional environments in both sections indicate a major relative sea-level fall in the latest Visean. The repetitive successions comprising different morphological stromatolites in Helv section and the cyclic alternation of subtidal and peritidal facies in Dujie section imply high-frequency sea-level fluctuations during latest Visean to Serpukhovian, most likely eustatic in origin. The carbon isotope data of Dujie limestone exhibit a pronounced positive δ13C excursion with ± 4.3‰ in the peritidal deposits. This shift is interpreted as the result of enhanced organic carbon burial in other regions and depletion of the ocean in light carbon. The widespread coeval cyclicity occurring in settings in South China, Western Europe, and North America is most likely the results of glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations, possibly with local influences of tectonic movements. The matrix is the agglomeration carrier of magnetic mineral particles in high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). Its structural parameters have a great influence on the distribution of the magnetic field in the separation space, and therefore affect the separation effect. This paper introduces a novel matrix called a screw thread rod matrix, which has the dual advantages of the rod matrix and the grooved magnetic plate, i.e., the advantages of better slurry fluidity through the matrix and higher magnetic field gradient at the sharp corners. This research on the novel matrix was performed from the following three aspects: the description of components of the matrix, the effect of structural parameters of the matrix on separation performance of fine hematite ore tailings in Northeast China, and the numerical analysis of the magnetic induction properties of different kinds of magnetic matrices based on three-dimensional structural characteristics. Compared with the smooth rod matrix, the proposed screw thread rod matrix enhances the inhomogeneity of the axial magnetic induction intensity on the surface of the matrix. Accordingly, the recovery of fine-grained iron minerals is improved through the resulting combined effect of the radial curvature of the rod and the inhomogeneous magnetic field in the axial direction. Furthermore, the best moderate distance between equidistant ring-shaped bulges (ERB) as well as the best column gap between adjacent rod elements were determined, respectively. The particle interaction behavior is important in flotation process, and the interaction energy calculation is helpful for evaluating this behavior. This study investigates and compares the floatability of magnesite, dolomite, and quartz in single mineral flotation and artificial mixture flotation with dodecylamine (DDA) as collector. The results showed that while the pH, dissolved ions, and competitive adsorption had a minor influence on their floatability, fine magnesite and dolomite largely decreased the recovery of quartz. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis on the flotation products demonstrated severe masking of fine particles on the surface of quartz. The extended-DLVO (Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek) theory was applied to calculate the interaction energy between the mineral particles, and the results showed that the interaction force between magnesite and quartz and between dolomite and quartz was attractive; therefore, fine magnesite and dolomite particles were easily masked on the surface of quartz. The calculation results agree with the experiment results and explain the mechanism of particles’ interaction and the reasons for the differences in single mineral flotation and artificially mixed minerals flotation. Fluorescence using ultraviolet (UV) light has seen increased use as a tool in paleontology over the last decade. Laser-stimulated fluorescence (LSF) is a next generation technique that is emerging as a way to fluoresce paleontological specimens that remain dark under typical UV. A laser’s ability to concentrate very high flux rates both at the macroscopic and microscopic levels results in specimens fluorescing in ways a standard UV bulb cannot induce. Presented here are five paleontological case histories that illustrate the technique across a broad range of specimens and scales. Novel uses such as back-lighting opaque specimens to reveal detail and detection of specimens completely obscured by matrix are highlighted in these examples. The recent cost reductions in medium-power short wavelength lasers and use of standard photographic filters has now made this technique widely accessible to researchers. This technology has the potential to automate multiple aspects of paleontology, including preparation and sorting of microfossils.
