Digital Information and Communication Technologies act as partners in the educational context, making it more dynamic through Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). The adaptive system is based on technological solutions/tools, which allow the customization of teaching processes according to the student's singularities. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) to elucidate which educational performance indicators best guide adaptive learning in virtual learning environments. To this end, we adopted the principles of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) as a systematic review protocol, and as operational support, we used the online tool Parsifal. The initial database search - IEEE, ACM, and Scopus - returned 276 articles. After filtering based on the protocol, 16 articles remained part of the analysis and discussion corpus. The RSL results indicate that most of the indicators used to guide activities are based on the correctness and error of the questions. This shows that there is still much to be implemented in learning adaptability in virtual environments; for a more holistic assessment of learning, it is necessary to consider an integrated set of these indicators and not just individualized analyses. (1) Background: Portomesenteric Venous Thrombosis (PMVT) is a rare but serious complication of Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (MBS). Although more frequently reported after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), the risk factors for PMVT remain unclear. This study aims to compare the incidence and determinants of PMVT between LSG and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB). (2) Methods: A retrospective analysis of 5235 MBSs conducted at our institution between 2015 and 2023 identified five cases of PMVT. Additionally, a systematic review in March 2023, covering PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus, was performed. Several data were analyzed regarding risk factors. (3) Results: In our case series, the incidence of PMVT was 0.1%. The five cases described involved four females with a BMI between 39.7 and 56.0 kg/m2. Their comorbidities were associated with metabolic syndrome, all women used oral contraceptive and two patients were diagnosed with thrombophilia or pulmonary embolism. Per protocol, thromboprophylaxis was administered to all patients. Diagnosis was made at a median of 16 days post-surgery, with abdominal pain being the main presenting symptom. Acute cases were managed with enoxaparin, unfractionated heparin and fibrinolysis. One patient required surgery. Ten studies were included in the systematic review and 205 patients with PMVT were identified: 193 (94.1%) post-LSG and 12 post-LRYGB. The most common comorbidities were dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea and liver disorders; (4) Conclusions: PMVT is a potentially life-threatening complication after MBS, requiring preventive measures, timely diagnosis and several treatments. Our findings suggest a higher occurrence in women with an elevated BMI and post-LSG. Tailored thromboprophylaxis for MBS patients at risk of PMVT may be warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) is an emerging technique for delivering chemotherapy directly to the peritoneum via a pressurized aerosol. Its growing attention stems from its effectiveness in treating peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) originating from various primary tumors, with gastric cancer (GC) being among the most prevalent. This study aimed to systematically investigate PIPAC's therapeutic role in gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis (GCPM). Methods: The systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching Pubmed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases. The meta-analysis of relative risks and mean differences compared patients undergoing one or two PIPAC sessions with those completing three or more, assessing various outcomes. Results: Eighteen studies underwent qualitative analysis, and four underwent quantitative analysis. Patients with three or more PIPAC procedures had shorter hospital stays (MD = −1.2; 95%CI (−1.9; −0.5); p < 0.001), higher rates of histopathological response (RR = 1.77, 95%CI 1.08; 2.90; p = 0.023), and significantly improved overall survival (MD = 6.0; 95%CI 4.2; 7.8; p < 0.001). Other outcomes showed no significant differences. Conclusions: PIPAC demonstrated efficacy in carefully selected patients, enhancing histopathologic response rates and overall survival without prolonging hospital stays. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to assess the effectiveness of the Dangerous Decibels (DD) program in students in the short- and medium-term follow-ups (up to 6 months), including an online game. Method: A randomized trial was conducted between two interventions (DD and placebo). The research included 58 participants who were divided into two groups: the study group (SG) and the control group. The following phases were developed: intervention (DD or placebo), post-3-month assessment and availability of the online game, and post-6-month assessment. A questionnaire was administered to assess their performance. Overall total scores and category scores were obtained. Results: Improved overall scores were found in the SG in the immediate post-intervention (p = .004), post-3-month (p = .022), and post-6-month (p = .002) questionnaires, as well as the knowledge and behavior categories. Conclusions: The DD program effectively improved the knowledge and behavior of 10- to 12-year-old children regarding noise in the short- and medium-term follow-ups. However, no significant changes were achieved in terms of barriers only by using the program and the online game. Adding a second intervention (the online game) to the program seems to be a good option to maintain the changes achieved with the interactive class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tetrazolium test (TZT) can quickly evaluate in detail the viability and vigor of seeds. This study aimed to determine the optimal conditions for conducting the TZT on seeds of Handroanthus spongiosus. For this purpose, seeds from three lots were pre-soaked in water for 16 h, followed by extraction of the tegument and immersion in tetrazolium salt solutions at different concentrations (0.01–0.1%), for increasing periods (1–4 h) and at 30 °C in the dark. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 4 × 4 factorial scheme with 25 seeds per repetition. We applied generalized linear models and the Tukey test for pairwise comparisons of the means at 5% probability. The viability/vigor results were compared with data obtained from the germination test at 25 °C using a subsample of seeds from the same lots. The time (1 h to 4 h) of immersion of the seeds in tetrazolium salt solutions did not cause a clear coloration difference. The seeds subjected to all treatment concentrations for 3 h presented average viability greater than 60%, with no difference in germination percentage. The TZT at 0.01% tetrazolium salt solution for 3 h was most efficient in assessing the viability of the Handroanthus spongiosus seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seed production, quality and germination are likely to be affected by a drastic climate change in semi-arid areas predicted for the end of the century. We evaluated Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschu (Fabaceae) seeds of different sizes, populations and harvest years for germination and tolerance to environmental stresses aiming to predict impacts of future climate. Seeds were accessed for germination temperature, salinity and osmotic limits and requirements. Germination of large and small seeds harvested in different populations was evaluated in optimum and stressful temperature, salinity and water deficit. A glasshouse pot assay tested weekly irrigation regimes and seedlings emergence and growth. Optimal temperature for seeds germination was 34.8 oC and limits were 5.6 oC and 50.9 oC. Large and small-sized seeds do not differ in germination, however small seeds are more efficient in stressful conditions. Seedlings can emerge and grow under small weekly irrigation for four months. The predicted increase in temperature will not impair germination, however, the time available for seedling establishment will decrease due to lacking rainfall. The increase in the amount of small-sized seeds produced in drought years is a strategy for coping with harsh environments, rather than a decrease in seed quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazilian higher education has its origins in an ingrained elitist tendency, serving a public from the highest social strata and with a tradition in higher education. However, there was a significant demand for progression in studies, putting pressure on the government to correct the gap between the supply of vacancies and the demand for higher education. Thus, several policies were aimed at democratizing this level of expansion. The present study seeks to carry out a survey and discussion about public policies aimed at the expansion of higher education implemented in the recent history of the country, since 1990. In order to obtain an understanding of how the current university structure in the country was conceived, and how its audience was characterized. This analysis was carried out through official documents available in the Official Gazette of the Union, as well as published by the responsible public entities. Also included are budgetary data from public transparency and statistical synopses from higher education educational censuses. It appears that the country's social inequalities are reflected in educational inequalities. In this way, public policies implemented aimed at mitigating such inequalities stand out. Faced with the difficulties of structuring the public system to absorb all high school graduates, private HEIs took better advantage of the public policies of that period and continued to expand. This paper sought to map the enunciations about education YouTubers in the Nova Escola magazine. Starting from the question: 'How are teachers and teaching processes represented in the publications of Nova Escola magazine that discuss the use of YouTube video platform?', and adopting a theoretical framework derived from Cultural Studies, an enunciative analysis of Foucaultian inspiration was carried out. The corpus consisted of 17 articles, with two focuses of analysis identified: the enunciative recurrences associated education with the action of entertaining and pointed to the use of YouTube as innovative. Introduction: Noise in the school environment has been a major concern in many countries around the world. Students need a favorable signal-to-noise ratio in the classroom to ensure adequate speech intelligibility, which is directly dependent on the acoustics of the classroom and favorable noise levels in these environments. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of physical, organizational, and educational interventions to achieve noise reduction in a school. Methods: Presentations on the effects of noise were made to school administrators, teachers, and students (educational activities), and also to the students' families. Then, thermoacoustic treatment, changes in break times, equipment maintenance, and scheduling of students' departure were applied. Sound pressure levels were measured before and after interventions for the unoccupied and occupied classroom conditions (n = 11 classrooms) and of the school's outside areas (n = 4). Self-administered printed pre- and postintervention multiple-choice questionnaires were completed by the students in the classroom. Measures of the signal-to-noise ratio of the teachers' voice before and after the interventions were also conducted (n = 3 classrooms). The interventions included installation of an acoustic ceiling, installation of air-conditioning, and replacement of the existing furniture with wood furniture. Results: Comparing the pre- and postintervention questionnaires, the Annoyance Index was reduced from 0.78 to 0.59. The tinnitus reported by the individuals increased significantly in the postintervention questionnaire (p < 0.001). Significant reductions in noise levels in both unoccupied and occupied classrooms were observed. There was also an improvement in the mean signal-to-noise ratio in the evaluated classrooms (n = 3) from +7.5 to +8.4 dB. Conclusion: Subjective measures and objective assessments demonstrated that both physical and educational interventions had a positive effect on short-term changes in habits and noise reduction in the school environment. Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) are known to generate reactive oxygen species in the respiratory system, triggering cells to activate antioxidant defence mechanisms, such as Keap1-Nrf2 signalling and autophagy. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the Keap1-Nrf2 signalling and autophagy pathways after DEP exposure. BEAS-2B cells were transfected with silencing RNA (siRNA) specific to Nrf2 and exposed to DEP. The relative levels of mRNA for Nrf2, NQO1, HO-1, LC3B, p62 and Atg5 were determined using RT-PCR, while the levels of LCB3, Nrf2, and p62 protein were determined using Western blotting. The autophagy inhibitor bafilomycin caused a significant decrease in the production of Nrf2, HO-1 and NQO1 compared to DEPs treatment, whereas the Nrf2 activator sulforaphane increased the LC3B (p = 0.020) levels. BEAS-2B cells exposed to DEP at a concentration of 50 μg/mL for 2 h showed a significant increase in the expression of LC3B (p = 0.001), p62 (p = 0.008), Nrf2 (p = 0.003), HO-1 (p = 0.001) and NQO1 (p = 0.015) genes compared to control. In siRNA-transfected cells, the LC3B (p < 0.001), p62 (p = 0.001) and Atg5 (p = 0.024) mRNA levels and the p62 and LC3II protein levels were decreased, indicating that Nrf2 modulated the expression of autophagy markers (R < 1). These results imply that, in bronchial cells exposed to DEP, the Nrf2 system positively regulates autophagy to maintain cellular homeostasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study aimed to analyze and compare four different types of earplugs, divided into premolded plugs and foam plug models, in relation to the level of attenuation, comfort, and the size of the external acoustic meatus (EAM) in an attempt to identify how these variables influence the choice of specific hearing protection devices (HPDs).Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was performed in a sample of 49 participants, oriented toward the ideal placement of four HPDs, two premolded and two foam plugs (3M™). The procedures included otoscopy, EAM diameter measurement using an otometer, EAM volume measurement via an acoustic impedance test, and the obtainment of the bilateral personal attenuation rating (PAR) for each HPD using the E-A-Rfit™ Validation System (3M™). The Bipolar Comfort Rating Scale (BCRS) instrument was applied twice for each individual: once after the evaluations with the premolded HPDs and again after the evaluations with the foam plug HPDs. Then, each participant was asked which was his/her favorite protector.Results: The volume of the EAM was not directly related to the diameter of the EAM. The attenuation did not interfere with the HPD preference, and the PAR of the foam plug was significantly higher regardless of the preferred HPD. Regarding the BCRS, the variables "Placement," "Complexity," and "Occlusion Effect" had higher scores for premolded HPDs and had a direct relationship with the type of preferred HPD.Conclusion: Attention to the use of HPDs should be personalized, taking into account the needs of each individual, considering not only the attenuation, but also the user's reported well-being. This research has as central theme the term resilience, related to psychology. We question whether resilience, this ability to submit to adversity, is an innate ability or fruit of human interaction, through relationships. We aim to know, understand and reflect, based on a bibliographic review, always considering the complexity that such a construct has. Methodologically, this research was based on a search in the Scielo.org database, with the descriptor psychological resilience, resulting in 111 articles, but reduced as object of study to 14 articles, added by supporting literature. As a result we bring a construct formed by knowing and knowledge that diverges in the ways of being approached. But in the found articles it is possible to state that most of them are about resilience as a capacity or process, which occurs in a reciprocal relationship among the individual, the environment and the relationships that he establishes in a multidimensional way. But because of being a complex construct, obviously there is no definition that limits the understanding or end the research about the subject. Objective: To evaluate the perception of elderly population about cancer, correlating it with the clinical variables sex, age and past history of cancer. Methods: The sample was composed of 300 individuals, 174 (58%) women. A questionnaire containing ten questions and based on the Health Information National Trends Survey was used. For statistical analysis, a p value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Individuals aged 80 years and older were more likely to believe that regular tests can identify cancer in early stages, compared to elderly aged under 80 years (OR: 0.103; CI95%: 0.021-0.499; p=0.005). Elderly subjects with positive history of cancer were more likely to believe that few people survive cancer, compared to those who never had the disease (OR: 0.379; CI95%: 0.167-0.858; p=0.02). All patients with a positive history of cancer believed that early-detected cancer can be cured. Conclusion: Aged individuals with =80 years or older believed in regular exams as a form of early detection of cancer, probably due to the greater frequency of medical instructions. Subjects who had cancer believed that few people survive the disease, perhaps because of the negative experiences they have experienced. Considering the greater presence of fatalistic perceptions, this group constitutes a potential target for educational approaches about cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim. To evaluate the primary and secondary stability of implants in the posterior maxilla. Methods. Patients were allocated into three groups: (A) native bone, (B) partially regenerated bone, and (C) nearly totally regenerated bone. Insertion torque (IT) and implant stability quotient (ISQ) were measured at placement, to evaluate whether satisfactory high primary stability (IT ≥ 45 N/cm; ISQ ≥ 60) was achieved; ISQ was measured 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after placement, to investigate the evolution to secondary stability. Results. 133 implants (Anyridge®, Megagen) were installed in 59 patients: 55 fixtures were placed in Group A, 57 in Group B, and 21 in Group C. Fifty-two implants had satisfactory high primary stability (IT ≥ 45 N/cm; ISQ ≥ 60). A positive correlation was found between all variables (IT, ISQ at t = 0, t = 60), and statistically higher IT and ISQ values were found for implants with satisfactory high primary stability. Significant differences were found for IT and ISQ between the groups (A, B, and C); however, no drops were reported in the median ISQ values during the healing period. Conclusions. The evaluation of the primary and secondary implant stability may contribute to higher implant survival/success rates in critical areas, such as the regenerated posterior maxilla. The peel of passion fruit is rich in fiber which has properties comparable to food additives. Thus, in this study, the technological properties of flour obtained from yellow passion fruit peel were determined and compared to those of five commercial additives. Two flour samples were prepared from passion fruit shells through a modified process in order to evaluate their potential use as a stabilizing agent, emulsifier, thickener and gelling agent. These characteristics were then compared to those of low and high methoxyl pectins, xanthan gum, guar gum and carrageenan. The flour samples obtained have significant stabilizing capacity, as they were able to hinder particle settling when applied to nectars. Another positive feature observed was the emulsifying potential, showing similar results to additives commonly used in mayonnaise, such as xanthan and guar gums. The flour samples also showed good properties as a thickening and gelling agent in ice cream toppings and structured fruit. The results demonstrate that flour produced from passion fruit peel can be used to replace the commercial hydrocolloids studied since, besides being obtained through simple procedures and associated with low cost, the flour samples showed similar technical characteristics with regard to their stabilizing, emulsifying, thickening and gelling power. Objective. To evaluate horizontal bone gain and implant survival and complication rates in patients treated with titanium meshes placed simultaneously with dental implants and fixed over them. Methods. Twenty-five patients treated with 40 implants and simultaneous guided bone regeneration with titanium meshes (i–Gen®, MegaGen, Gyeongbuk, Republic of Korea) were selected for inclusion in the present retrospective multicenter study. Primary outcomes were horizontal bone gain and implant survival; secondary outcomes were biological and prosthetic complications. Results. After the removal of titanium meshes, the CBCT evaluation revealed a mean horizontal bone gain of 3.67 mm (±0.89). The most frequent complications were mild postoperative edema (12/25 patients: 48%) and discomfort after surgery (10/25 patients: 40%); these complications were resolved within one week. Titanium mesh exposure occurred in 6 patients (6/25 : 24%): one of these suffered partial loss of the graft and another experienced complete graft loss and implant failure. An implant survival rate of 97.5% (implant-based) and a peri-implant marginal bone loss of 0.43 mm (±0.15) were recorded after 1 year. Conclusions. The horizontal ridge reconstruction with titanium meshes placed simultaneously with dental implants achieved predictable satisfactory results. Prospective randomized controlled trials on a larger sample of patients are required to validate these positive outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To standardize an experimental model of chronic monoarthritis induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant appropriate for the analysis of the effect of walking on nociception and on joint edema. Methods: The following factors were evaluated as to monoarthritis induction: route and site of administration, number and interval of inoculations, Mycobacterium species, and animal gender. Wistar male and female rats (200 to 250g) received two injections of complete Freund’s adjuvant containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis (1.0mg/mL; 50μL) or Mycobacterium butyricum (0.5mg/mL; 50μL) intra-articularly in the tibiotarsal or tibiofemoral joints, or an injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (Mycobacterium butyricum or tuberculosis) intradermally at the base of the tail and another intraarticularly (tibiotarsal or tibiofemoral). The animals were submitted to evaluations of articular disability and edema. Articular disability was assessed by paw elevation time (in seconds) during the one-minute walk test. Edema of the tibiofemoral joint was assessed by variation of joint diameter (cm). Tibiotarsal joint edema was measured by the volume of the paw (mL). Results: Administration of complete Freund’s adjuvant containing Mycobacterium butyricum increased paw elevation time and edema in both joints. Abstract: Aim: An association between tooth agenesis and taurodontism has been suggested. To verify if tooth agenesis and taurodontism are associated within families and specific patterns of tooth agenesis, this study aims to compare the frequency of taurodontism in patients with nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis, their first and second-degree relatives with complete permanent dentition and a control group of unrelated healthy individuals with complete permanent dentition. Materials and methods: Panoramic radiographs of patients with nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis, their first and second-degree relatives and a control group of individuals with complete permanent dentition were examined. Taurodontism was assessed on permanent mandibular first molars. The difference in the frequency of taurodontism among the studied groups was tested with Fisher''s Exact Test. Results: Seventeen families with nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis were studied. The frequency of taurodontism was 29% in patients with tooth agenesis, 10.3% in their first and second degree relatives, and 6.6% in the control group. A significant statistical difference among the studied groups was observed (p =0.002). Taurodontism was proportionally more frequent in patients with a higher number of absent teeth. It was mainly observed in patients from families in which the proband was diagnosed with oligodontia. Conclusions: Taurodontism is more frequent in nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis. Individuals in families with second premolar and molar oligodontia are more likely to have taurodontism, even the individuals with complete dentition. The purpose of this study was to genetically characterize and phylogenetically analyze the Cryptosporidium spp. isolated from exotic birds commercialized in popular markets, commercial aviaries, and pet shops located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fecal samples from individually housed birds were collected and subjected to centrifuge-flotation technique using saturated sugar solution. DNA was isolated from Cryptosporidium positive samples, and 18S subunit rDNA was amplified and processed using nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To identify the protozoan species, the PCR amplicons were used for restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequencing analyses. Of the 103 analyzed fecal samples, seven (6.8%) were positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts. Sequencing and further phylogenetic analyses allowed us to identify the following species: Cryptosporidium parvum in Bengalese finch ( Lonchura striata domestica) and avian genotype III in Java sparrow ( Padda oryzivora) and cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus). The sequences of the Cryptosporidium spp. isolated from canaries ( Serinus canarius) were not identifiable within the groups of known species, but they presented a higher genetic similarity with C. parvum. This is the first report in Brazil showing that C. parvum parasitizes Bengalese finches and that avian genotype III parasitizes Java sparrows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a direct method to determine absorption anisotropy of colloidal quantum rods. In this method, the rods are aligned in solution by using an alternating electric field and we measure simultaneously the resulting average change in absorption. We show that a frequency window for the electric field exists in which the change in absorbance as a function of field strength can be analyzed in terms of the quantum-rod dipole moment and the absorption coefficient for light that is polarized parallel or perpendicular to the long axis of the rod. The approach is verified by measuring the absorbance change of CdSe rods at 400 nm as a function of field strength, where we demonstrate excellent agreement between experiment and theory. This enables us to propose improved values for the CdSe quantum-rod extinction coefficient. Next, we analyze CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods and find that the absorption of the first exciton transition is fully anisotropic, with a vanishing absorption coefficient for light that is polarized perpendicularly to the long axis of the rods. Abstract: In this work, we investigated the activity of the platelet activating factor acetyl hydrolase (PAF-AH) in the salivary gland homogenates and saliva of Rhodnius prolixus. PAF-AH activity in the salivary gland homogenates was lower than in the saliva. Preliminary characterization of the enzyme demonstrated that it hydrolyzed the substrate 2-thio-PAF, was detectable just in 1 pair of salivary gland homogenates in 0.5ml buffer, and was stable under different conditions. PMSF, TPCK, TLCK, pepstatin A and p-BPB all inhibited the PAF-AH activity. Enzyme specific activity in salivary gland homogenates diminished immediately after feeding of 5th-instar larvae, and increased before feeding by adult insects. 2-Thio-PAF induced platelet-aggregation that was inhibited by previous incubation of the substrate with salivary gland homogenates or saliva. The objective of the current study was comparing the dynamic and occurrence of Cryptosporidium sp., as well as the morphometry and elimination period of oocysts in naturally infected ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), chickens (Gallus gallus) and Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) from two local markets of Rio de Janeiro, RJ. There were significant differences considering the occurrence of infection between the two markets, and also between chickens and ducks, but not among Japanese quails. Also, significant statistical differences were observed in morphometry, considering the major and minor diameters of oocysts and the calculated morphometric index (P<0.01); however, there was no difference between chickens and Japanese quails (P>0.05). According to the elimination period, ducks eliminated oocysts for a longer period and in a higher number. Japanese quails and chickens had a similar dynamic of oocysts elimination, no difference in its concentration was observed. Chickens were the most susceptible bird species to Cryptosporidium sp. infection, followed by ducks and Japanese quails. In conclusion, Cryptosporidium sp. natural infection was commonly found in the studied fowls. The syntheses, thermodynamic and kinetic properties of a series of 2-styryl-1-benzopyrylium compounds are reported. This family of compounds was found to follow the same pH- and light-dependent network of chemical reactions previously described for flavylium (2-phenyl-1-benzopyrylim) compounds. However, 2-styryl-1-benzopyrylium compounds exhibit absorption spectra substantially red shifted when compared with flavylium analogues (up to 90nm). Abstract: Chalcones possessing a hydroxyl group in position 2 cyclize to form flavylium salts in acidic media, this reaction being reversible under neutral–basic conditions. On the other hand, chalcones possessing a hydroxyl group in position 2′ cyclize to form flavanones in basic media. By synthesizing 2′-hydroxyflavylium tetrafluoroborate, it was possible to obtain trans-2,2′-dihydroxychalcone that in solution can evolve to 2′-hydroxyflavanone or back to 2′-hydroxyflavylium depending on the pH. The several equilibria established in aqueous solution were fully characterized. The importance of including flavanones into the flavylium network of chemical reactions is briefly exploited. Differently from water, efficient photochromism with a strong colour contrast has been observed for the multistate compound 7,4′-dihydroxyflavylium in the presence of cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. Two states are responsible for the photochromism: trans-chalcone (inside the micelle) in the dark, and flavylium cation, AH+, (in bulk water) upon irradiation. The kinetics of the system was characterized by flash photolysis and pH jumps. Evidence that the photochemical process leading to AH+ occurs in the micelle was achieved. The best colour contrast is obtained at pH = 1.5, from a solution practically colourless in the dark, to an intense yellow upon irradiation (quantum yield 0.4). The system is completely reversible with a lifetime of 38 min at room temperature, and exhibits a reasonable stability. A kinetic model capable of fitting the data from thermal entrance of the compound into the micelle, its ejection to bulk water upon irradiation and quantum yields of the photochemical process is proposed. What determines where synapses will form along an axon or how proteins are deposited at nascent synapses remains unknown. Here, we show that the initial formation of presynaptic terminals occurs preferentially at predefined sites within the axons of cortical neurons. Time-lapse imaging of synaptic vesicle protein transport vesicles (STVs) indicates that STVs pause repeatedly at these sites, even in the absence of neuronal or glial contact. Contact with a neuroligin-expressing non-neuronal cell induces formation of presynaptic terminals specifically at these STV pause sites. Remarkably, formation of stable contacts with dendritic filopodia also occurs selectively at STV pause sites. Although it is not yet known which molecules comprise the predefined sites, STV pausing is regulated by cues that affect synaptogenesis. Overall, these data are consistent with the hypothesis that regulation of STV pausing might be an important mechanism for accumulation of presynaptic proteins at nascent synapses and support a new model in which many en passant synapses form specifically at predefined sites in young axons. This study aims to investigate the effect of β-cyclodextrin on microencapsulation of Bifidobacterium-BB12 by alginate-xanthan and to evaluate the survival of the encapsulated microorganisms in simulated digestive fluids and frozen yogurt. Microcapsules were prepared by spray drying, using various combinations of alginate, xanthan gum and β-cyclodextrin. The highest encapsulation yield was obtained with microcapsules formulated with β-cyclodextrin, showing that this molecule acts as a thermoprotector for the cells during the spray drying process. Microencapsulated Bifidobacterium-BB12 was highly resistant to simulated gastrointestinal conditions, with a 0.32 log cycles decrease in survival. In frozen yogurt prepared with Bifidobacterium-BB12 microcapsules, the cell count increased and remained above 6 log CFU/g throughout the storage period. In conclusion, the addition of Bifidobacterium-BB12 microcapsules into frozen yogurt obtained satisfactory results, being the viability of the probiotic microorganisms maintained during storage at −18 °C for 4 weeks. This study aimed to assess the following in individuals after stroke: (1) relationship between upper limb (UL) use by direct observation at home with use perceived and measured by accelerometers; (2) complementarity of these three measurements; and (3) relationship between UL bilateral capacity and bilateral use. Thirty-one individuals with chronic hemiparesis participated in this cross-sectional study. UL use was assessed using a behavioral map (BM), the Motor Activity Log-Amount of Use (MAL-AOU), and accelerometers, while UL capacity was assessed using the Test d'Evaluation des Membres Supérieurs des Personnes Âgées (TEMPA). The BM was strongly correlated with perceived use (MAL-AOU, ρ = 0.76) and accelerometer (ρ = 0.70). Bilateral UL use (BM) was moderately (ρ = 0.65) correlated with bilateral MAL-AOU and bilateral use by accelerometers (ρ = 0.62). The BM aided our understanding of how the paretic UL was used. The correlation between bilateral capacity (TEMPA bilateral) and bilateral use (BM) was significant (ρ = 0.49), while that with bilateral MAL-AOU and accelerometer were ρ = 0.68 and ρ = 0.50, respectively. A BM is a valid way to quantify UL use and can complement information assessed regarding perceived use and by accelerometers. Behavioral maps may be valuable to complement information assessed by perceived UL use and accelerometers. Quantifying bilateral capacity will reflect in a better understanding of actual paretic UL use after stroke. Handroanthus spongiosus (Rizzini) S. Grose is an endangered tree species. However, its seed quality, storage, and conservation strategies are issues still unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of H. spongiosus seeds subjected to different storage times, packaging, and environments for their conservation. A completely randomized experimental design was used, in a double factorial arrangement with an additional treatment (recently-harvested seeds), consisted of five storage times (up to 24 months) and six storage conditions, combining packaging types (permeable and impermeable) and environments (room, cold chamber, freezer, and liquid nitrogen conditions). Seed germination percentage and normal seedling percentage, shoot length, root length, and root to shoot dry weight ratio were evaluated. The seed germination and normal seedling percentages of H. spongiosus seeds conserved under room conditions decreased over the storage time. Normal seedling percentages decreased from the 12th month of storage onwards. Low and ultralow temperatures are recommended for short and medium-term conservation of H. spongiosus seeds, since they did not affect the growth of seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The demand for healthier and less processed food preservatives, which also accumulate therapeutic properties, has attracted the attention of consumers and industries, tus boosting the search for new technologies. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the thickening action performance of Moringa seed extracts in the elaboration of yoghurt. For this purpose, we evaluated the impact of the addition of different fractions of Moringa seed saline extract obtained via ultrafiltration in yogurt fermented by culture probiotic lactic production. In order to evaluate the influence of Moringa additives in final products, analysis of texture, pH, total protein content, susceptibility to syneresis, besides rheology assays, were performed throughout a four week storage-refrigerated period. Results revealed that yogurts added with Moringa extracts presented lower syneresis values, higher protein contents, higher consistency index values and more cohesive casein net, when compared to the control. This study endorses the potential application of Moringa seed extracts as thickener agents in food systems, which could represent a new option in the market of natural food additives. The proper storage of seeds is essential for the maintenance of the viability and physiological quality of the seeds. Cryopreservation, is the storage of seeds at ultra low temperatures preventing the biological deterioration of the material for long periods of time. The objective of this work was to evaluate different methods of thawing in the germination of cryopreserved H. spongiosus seeds. The seeds were frozen in liquid nitrogen (-196 oC) for 72 hours. After this period were submitted to slow or fast defrosting: 5 hours on average ambient temperature of 27 °C; 1 hour in a freezer at -20 °C, 3 hours in a refrigerator at 8 °C and 1 hour at room temperature; 4 hours in refrigerator, 1 hour at room temperature; 8 hours in freezer; 48 hours in the refrigerator, 1 hour at room temperature and compared to freshly harvested, non-frozen seeds. For the germination test, germitest paper moistened with distilled water was used, and placed to germinate at 25 °C. Three germination counts were performed at 4, 7 and 14 days after sowing. Defrosting for 4 hours in the refrigerator and 1 hour at room temperature maintained the physiological quality of the seeds of H. spongiosus, allowing similar germination, but faster than that of freshly harvested seeds. Introduction: Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer is a colorectal cancer syndrome characterized by the development of colorectal cancer and extracolonic tumors, and this syndrome has an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. To our knowledge, our study was the first to find dento-osseous anomalies and the second to observe Fordyce granules in a family with individuals with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer.Case Presentations: Twenty members of one Brazilian family with individuals with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer were analyzed according to the presence of colorectal cancer and the occurrence of Fordyce granules and dento-osseous anomalies. Their average age was 29.6 (range 7 to 53 years) years. Medical examinations of this family with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer were performed at the Coloproctology Division of our hospital. Then, all individuals were referred to our Oral Care Center for Inherited Diseases for intraoral examinations to verify the presence of Fordyce granules. Dental panoramic radiographs were done in order to describe dento-osseous anomalies on applying the Dental Panoramic Radiograph System. Of the 20 family members, four were diagnosed with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer and all four presented Fordyce granules in their upper lip, but only one of these four patients (Case 2) had a significant dento-osseous anomaly.Conclusions: Our familial study verified the presence of Fordyce granules in all individuals diagnosed with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, and the presence of significant dento-osseous anomalies in one of these cases. One of the requirements for the treatment of drinking water is the removal of pathogenic microorganisms. Typically, the most used techniques apply inorganic nanoparticles or chlorine release precursors to inactivate bacteria. While these treatments are very effective, they tend to show a decrease in antimicrobial activity over time, releasing potentially toxic ions and contributing to bacterial resistance. In this sense, the development of hydrogel-based materials has become a potential alternative for water disinfection. The synthesis and functionalization of hydrogels have been proven to improve the global performance of microorganism retention. Our work provides an overview of the synthesis and functionalization of hydrogel-based materials, their advantages and limitations, and the latest research on the use of hydrogels for water disinfection. The future panorama of hydrogel-based materials applicability for water treatment is also provided. The main challenge to expand the use of hydrogels in water treatment is the lack of research assessing the feasibility of large-scale applicability of these materials, considering real systems. Most of the studies carried out experiments at laboratory scale with controlled situations, in which interactions between microorganisms and real world contaminants were not considered. Moringa oleifera Lam. has been reported as a natural coagulant in the treatment of surface waters; however its use presents some disadvantages such as low performance in the coagulation/flocculation of low turbidity waters and organic matter increase in the treated water. In addition, there is little specialized literature about coagulation proteins present in Moringa seeds and their characterization. Thus, this work had as objective the fractionation of Moringa oleifera seeds protein, characterization of the fractions obtained and evaluation of potential coagulant activity in different water turbidity. Based on the results obtained it was found that the globulin and albumin presented the highest values for protein fraction in Moringa seeds with 53% and 44% respectively. Percentage removals of 87.40% of color, 89.71% of turbidity and 79.46% of UV 254nm were reached using 13 mg/L of the globulin coagulant for treatment of low turbidity water (50 NTU) without entailing excessive increase of the dissolved organic carbon in the treated water, even being considered a natural coagulant. Therefore, the use of fractionation as initial purification technique proved to be beneficial by producing a coagulant with high efficiency in the treatment of the low turbidity water. Although brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) potently regulates neuronal connectivity in the developing CNS, the mechanism by which BDNF influences the formation and/or maintenance of glutamatergic synapses remains unknown. Details about the subcellular localization of the BDNF receptor, TrkB, relative to synaptic and nonsynaptic proteins on excitatory neurons should provide insight into how BDNF might exert its effects during synapse formation. Here, we investigated the subcellular localization of tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB) relative to synaptic vesicle-associated proteins and NMDA receptors using immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, and time-lapse imaging in dissociated cultures of cortical neurons before, during, and after the peak of synapse formation. We find that TrkB is present in puncta on the surface and intracellularly in both dendrites and axons throughout development. Before synapse formation, some TrkB puncta in dendrites colocalize with NMDA receptors, and almost all TrkB puncta in axons colocalize with synaptic vesicle proteins. Clusters of TrkB fused to the enhanced green fluorescent protein (TrkB-EGFP) are highly mobile in both axons and dendrites. In axons, TrkB-EGFP dynamics are almost identical to vesicle-associated protein (VAMP2-EGFP), and these proteins are often transported together. Finally, surface TrkB is found in structures that actively participate in synapse formation: axonal growth cones and dendritic filopodia. Over time, surface TrkB becomes enriched at glutamatergic synapses, which contain both catalytic and truncated TrkB. Erythrina velutina Willd is a native Fabaceae with wide occurrence, mainly in the Caatinga Domain with multiple uses. This study aimed to compare the vulnerability/tolerance of seeds of four accessions of E. velutina to osmotic stresses. Four replications were conducted with 25 seeds, germinated in osmotic solutions of NaCl or PEG up to -1.73 MPa. Seeds that did not germinate after 14 days were recovered in distilled water. Obtained data were fitted in Boltzmann curves and t50 and synchrony were evaluated. A probit analysis was performed, and hydrotime and halotime models were constructed. In distilled water, the germination curve was similar for all accessions. When the concentration of salt or PEG in the substrate increased, the accessions differentiated into two groups. Two accessions - Jutaí 2012 and Jutaí 2015 - maintained high germination up to -0.86 MPa NaCl, while Caboclo 2008 and Caiçara 2011 accessions presented a lower germination speed. The hydrotime and halotime analyses separated the germination response of accessions according to their physiological quality and tolerance to osmotic and saline conditions. Seeds viability was maintained at both stresses, since germination was reestablished at distilled water, thus constituting a crucial response for this species' survival and conservation. Purpose:To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of adding object-related bilateral symmetrical training to mirror therapy (MT) to improve upper limb (UL) activity in chronic stroke patients.Method:Sixteen patients with moderate UL impairment were randomly allocated to either the experimental (EG) or control (CG) group. Both groups performed 1 hour sessions, 3 days/week for 4 weeks, involving object-related bilateral symmetrical training. EG performed the tasks observing their nonparetic UL reflected in the mirror, while CG observed the paretic UL directly. The primary outcome measure was unilateral and bilateral UL activity according to the Test d’Évaluation des Membres Supérieurs de Personnes Âgées (TEMPA). All measurements were taken at baseline, post-training, and follow-up (2 weeks).Results:TEMPA total score showed the main effect of time. Significant improvement was found for bilateral but not unilateral tasks. Both groups showed gains after training, with no differences between them.Conclusions:This study showed the feasibility of adding object-related bilateral training to MT. Both types of training improved UL bilateral activity; however, a larger sample is required for a definitive study. Other studies need to be carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of combining more distal-oriented movements and object-related unilateral training to improve these effects in chronic stroke patients. Caffeine in water resources has been reported, indicating the need for alternative treatments. Activated carbons (ACs) are efficient adsorbents; however, they present issues that immobilization in chitosan hydrogel (CH) can overcome. Despite the importance of both aspects, adsorption in continuous systems and different aqueous matrices are understudied. The present study developed and characterized chitosan/AC composites to improve the adsorbent properties and fill the research gap presented. The adsorbent was applied to adsorb caffeine in batch and fixed-bed experiments, using distilled and tap water and synthetic hospital wastewater. Chicha-do-cerrado shells were used to develop two different ACs (KAC and CAC) and composite beads (CH-KAC and CH-CAC). KAC and CH-KAC showed high surface area (1082 and 240 m² g−1), and FTIR indicated that CH assigned new functional groups to the composites. Batch studies revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 391.00, 139.61, 121.90, and 39.53 mg g−1 for KAC, CAC, CH-KAC, and CH-CAC, respectively. The ions effect in tap water did not occur for the composites due to the bridging phenomenon. In treating the synthetic hospital wastewater, the addition of AC increased the removal efficiency. The fixed-bed maximum adsorption capacity was 83.88 mg g−1 for CH-KAC, and the column was reused three times. Cachaça is a typical Brazilian distilled beverage made from fermented sugarcane juice. The copper levels in alembic cachaça are of great concern among producers, and the removal of this contaminant is important for the quality of the product. The present study aimed to remove copper ions from alembic cachaça by adsorption. Sugarcane bagasse, okara, Moringa oleifera Lam., three different types of zeolites, and two types of commercial charcoal were tested as biosorbents. The heat-treated sugarcane bagasse removed 100% of the copper present in a cachaça sample, while other low-cost natural adsorbents had close to 50% removal as was observed for M. oleifera seeds and okara. All adsorbents had porous and fibrous structures, favorable to adsorption. A kinetic study showed that a pseudo-second-order model was appropriate, with equilibrium times of 15 h for heat-treated sugarcane bagasse, okara, and M. oleifera seeds used as adsorbents. The Langmuir model better fitted the experimental data, indicating monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 17.00, 0.77, and 5.33 mg of Cu g−1 for the heat-treated sugarcane bagasse, M. oleifera seeds, and okara, respectively. We report on the “flash”synthesis of CdSe/CdS core–shell quantum dots (QDs). This newmethod, based on a seeded growth approach and using an excess of acarboxylic acid, leads to an isotropic and epitaxial growth of a CdSshell on a wurtzite CdSe core. The method is particularly fast andefficient, allowing the controllable growth of very thick CdS shells(up to 6.7 nm in the present study) in no more than 3 min, which isconsiderably shorter than in previously reported methods. The preparedmaterials present state-of-the-art properties with narrow emissionand high photoluminescence quantum yields, even for thick CdS shells.Additionally, Raman analyses point to an alloyed interface betweenthe core and the shell, which, in conjunction with the thickness ofthe CdS shell, results in the observed considerable reduction of theblinking rate. The present study investigates the effect of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaf hydroalcoholic extract at four levels on the shelf‐life and quality of chicken mortadella. The extracts showed phenolic compounds content of 1333.84 mg GAE/ml and antioxidant activity of EC50 of 12.43 mg extract/ml. The different mortadella formulations were characterized according to approximate composition, fatty acids profile, microbiological, sensory, and lipid oxidation analyses. The results showed no significant difference for approximate composition, pH, Aw, color, fatty acids profile, and lipid oxidation analysis between the formulations and during the storage. The control sample without M. oleifera showed more hardness and the microbiology results showed that the extract was efficient in all samples. In sensory analysis, none of the formulations presented were rejected by the panelists. Results showed that it is possible to produce a safer chicken mortadella with less synthetic antioxidants, maintaining the quality of the product using 0.25% of natural antioxidants. Practical applications: In order to prevent lipid oxidation in meat products, the industries generally use synthetic antioxidants to ensure greater durability of their products, but the use of synthetic antioxidants can bring harm for the health of consumers. Thus, currently industries are studying the replacement of these substances by natural extracts containing antioxidants. One of the alternatives is to use leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam. extracts. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Moringa oleifera leaf extract in the conservation of mortadella, preventing microbial contamination and lipid oxidation for up to 120 days under refrigeration. Purpose: This study evaluates the exposure of call center operators (CCOs) to occupational noise, its association with auditory and nonauditory symptoms, and the feasibility of monaural and binaural headsets. Method: We measured the noise exposure sound pressure levels (SPLs) with the microphone-in-real-ear technique and administered a questionnaire on auditory/nonauditory symptoms and headset preference. Results: We assessed 79 CCOs with normal hearing. Overall, 98.7% of the participants reported at least one auditory symptom, and 88.6% reported at least one nonauditory symptom after using the headset. We found significant associations between the headset volume setting and the number of auditory and nonauditory symptoms and between sharp increases in sound level and tinnitus. The microphone-in-real-ear diffuse-field--related SPLs with monaural headsets (85.5 dBA) were significantly higher than those with binaural headsets (83.1 dBA). Binaural headsets were the preference of 84.8% of the subjects. The SPLs of the binaural headsets were significantly lower than those of the monaural headsets in the subjects who preferred the binaural headsets. Conclusions: CCOs with normal hearing reported auditory and nonauditory symptoms, highlighting the need for attention and further investigation. Prolonged storage of seeds may lead to decreases in seed quality, negatively affecting germination and vigor and preventing the obtaining of a promising stand. Seed quality is a critical factor, and the performance of the lot can be altered by vigor, dormancy and, mainly, by the time and conditions in which the seeds were stored. In the experiment, the physiological quality of seeds 14 genotypes of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) genotypes stored for a period of thirteen years in cold conditions was evaluated. The seeds were subjected to germination induction treatment with potassium nitrate (KNO3) and evaluated to identify seeds with presence and absence of embryos. The seed storage period affected their germination capacity and the use of KNO3 did not increase seed germination. A low number of full seeds was found for genotype 613 (12%). The relative germination percentages did not underestimate the buffel grass seed germination potential, as it is usually calculated, providing an improved distinction between the evaluated genotypes. The use of KNO3 increased the seedling root and shoot weights of some genotypes, as well as the dry matter weight of seedlings, an important characteristic for forage production. The prolonged storage affects the physiological quality of buffel grass seeds. The present study produced Italian salami containing spray‐dried encapsulated microparticles with the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis (BB‐12) and curing salt reduction. Three formulations were made: a control formulation (C) without BB‐12 and 0.020% curing salt; formulation B1 with encapsulated BB‐12 and 0.020% curing salt; and formulation B2 with encapsulated BB‐12 and 0.010% curing salt. The addition of the microparticles containing Bifidobacterium BB‐12 and curing salt reduction did not affect most of the chemical composition, pH, water activity, lipid oxidation, a* and b*, texture profile, fatty acids profile, and organic acids of the samples. Probiotics samples exhibited excellent sensory acceptance and purchase intention. The protective effect of the microencapsulation allowed high probiotics viability in the product until the end of the storage, showing that it is possible to incorporate Bifidobacterium BB‐12 in Italian salami, with good technological and sensory results. Practical applications: The growing demand for functional foods has driven the use of probiotics in food products, which represents a reality in the consumer market. Probiotics are microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host mainly by the improvement of intestinal transit and the relief of lactose intolerance. In this study, Italian salami with a probiotic profile was produced, which aimed to improve the health of consumers. The microparticles containing the microencapsulated probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis (BB‐12) and the curing salt reduction did not affect the quality and the sensory characteristics of Italian salami. During 45 days of storage, probiotics remained viable; thus, we can state that the addition of BB‐12 may be an alternative to obtain a product with the benefits of functional foods. The use of Moringa oleifera (MO) for cleaner processes in water treatment has been proposed to treat raw water for low-income locations for its abundant availability, low cost, reduced by-product generation, biodegradability, non-toxicity and multifunctional behavior. This review analyzed studies that used MO seeds in coagulation-flocculation processes, identifying the main proteins that presented coagulant activity. It was concluded that its most viable application would be as flocculation aid, since it was possible to reduce the concentration of the chemical coagulant with good removal results. Regarding the use of MO as adsorbent, studies could verify its potential to remove several water contaminants, such as pesticides, dyes and pharmaceuticals. Moreover, hybrid treatments have been investigated, however, a research gap could be verified regarding studies on pilot scale, which are fundamental for verifying the viability in water treatment plants. In this sense, the main trends, challenges and recommendations for further studies were assessed regarding the sustainable application of MO seeds in water treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
