This paper presents two novel formulations for scheduling problems, namely order-position hybrid formulation (OPH) and order-disjunctive hybrid formulation (ODH), which extend and combine parts of existing formulation strategies. The first strategy (OPH) is based on sequence position and linear ordering formulations, adding relationships between constraints that allow relaxing some decision variables. The second approach (ODH) is based on linear ordering and disjunctive formulations. In this work, we prove ODH to be the most efficient formulation known so far. The experiments have been carried out with a large set of problems, which consider single machines and identical parallel machines. Computational results show that OPH is better than the rest of the existing formulations for the case of weighted completion objectives, while ODH turns out to be the best approach for most scenarios studied. Molecular rotors are a subclassification of molecular machines and are vital for the develop of innovative technologies in various fields. This paper explores exclusively the light-driven hemithioindigo (HTI) based molecular rotors, varieties, synthetic routes, photoisomerization mechanism, and its physical, chemical, and photochromic properties. For this, an exploratory analysis was carried out, from which it was concluded that one of the properties that gives these rotors an advantage over other structures is their extremely fast unidirectional rotation when irradiated with visible light. In addition, their multiple applications and development prospects derived from the exploit of their properties, making these compounds an interesting proposal for innovation in scientific research. Introduction: Management of donor site morbidity in the setting of split thickness skin graft (STSG) is of crucial importance with no superior wound dressing described to date and the growing need of decreasing epithelializing time. The purpose of the study was to compare the standard of care using a hydrocolloid dressing to platelet rich plasma (PRP) and plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in order to determine its therapeutic potential in this setting.Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in which each patient served as its own control. PRGF was obtained by means of freeze-thaw out of the PRP from the subject of the study. Patients from the study had three donor sites and each donor site received either to PRP, PRGF or the standard of care, hydrocolloid. The main variable was time to epithelialization, and secondary variables subject to study were pain, quality of the scar, complications and cost.Results: 20 patients were recruited with a total number of 60 donor sites to study. On the 8th post-operative day 55% and 45% of the sites treated with PRP and PRGF, respectively, complete epithelialization was observed as compared to 20% of the sites treated with hydrocolloid, statistical significance was achieved between the latter two (p = 0.036). The areas treated with PRP and PRGF received inferior values on the visual analog scale on post-op day 5 and 8 compared to hydrocolloid. Values on wound healing metrics were lower in the PRP when compared to hydrocolloid. No adverse effects were recorded.Conclusion: Donor site of STSG treated with PRP in the setting of the burn patient decreased time to epithelialization. The architect Javier Peña Peña (Madrid, 1913-Almería, 1976) compiled, between 1964 and 1976, a collection of 525 drawings of capitals that he requested from other colleagues, many of them renowned masters of Spanish architecture such as Alejandro de la Sota, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza, Miguel Fisac, Fernando Higueras or Julio Cano Lasso, among others. The design of a capital reveals a critical, theoretical and intellectual positioning; it reflects the interest towards a certain technical and structural proposal; and it is claimed as a synthesis of intentions about what the contemporary architectural project is for us. This paper, which uses a taxonomy, will establish familiarities of the different capital designs, and will look for possible chronological relationships between each drawing and the professional and academic biographies of each of the authors. The development of biofilms is an interesting strategy to reduce the use of conventional packaging materials to preserve and prolong the shelf life of foods. In this study, different concentrations of sodium alginate (SA) (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% w/v) and glycerol (GL) (6.0, 4.0, 2.0, 1.0 and 0% w/v) on the properties of enriched films with orange peel (OP) powder were investigated. Physical, structural, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties were characterized. The results revealed that incorporation of glycerol to OP-SA film-making solution trend to flexible and opaque films, while unplasticized sample did not form flexible films and were glossy. Moreover, decreasing glycerol and simultaneously increase alginate content led to decrease film thickness, moisture content, water solubility and oxygen transmission rate, whereas water absorption was increased. It was observed in micrographs that films with 1.5% SA and 1.0% GL had better surface attributes, and a further increase in GL and decrease in SA concentration was not found to be as favorable. Furthermore, FTIR spectra exhibited that intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurred between GL and OP-SA. X-ray diffraction showed that the films crystal structure has been changed significantly when the OP-SA and GL were mixed in. The plasticized films showed higher thermal stability as confirmed by TGA and DSC thermogram. The tensile strength of OP-SA-GL films was enhanced from 0.92 to 7.39 MPa, while elongation at break was decreased significantly from 20.76 to 2.67%. Background and Objective. The enzymatic debriding agent Nexobrid® allows for the performance of an early and selective debridement of burned tissues by the first evaluation of a burned patient. One of its most supported indications are circular deep burns, preventing and also treating the compartment syndrome. The aim of this article is to compare the efficacy of the enzymatic debriding versus escharotomy in this type of burns. Methods. We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of patients attended at the Great Burns Unit of the Hospital La Fe of Valencia (Spain). The review included patients suffering deep second-degree and third-degree circular burns caused by scald, contact or flames, affecting lower or upper limbs, treated from January 2014 to January 2017. Results. Thirty three patients were included in the study, from which 25 were managed with the traditional treatment, and 8 with the enzymatic debriding agent Nexobrid®. In the traditional treatment group, 11 escharotomies were performed, while the Nexobrid® group require none. This differences proved to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions. The use of the enzymatic debriding agent Nexobrid® can avoid or reduce the need of the performance of escharotomies in patients suffering from circular deep burns affecting limbs, preventing the morbidity associated to this procedure. Background and Objective. . The scrotal area presents special characteristics that allow the protection and thermal regulation of testicles. The etiology of scrotum defect can be multiple, being the most frequent cause Fournier's gangrene. Multiple reconstructive options have been described, nevertheless it has not yet been reached an ideal method. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of scrotal reconstruction, using gracilis muscle flap or skin graft, on testicular hormonal function and patient satisfaction. Methods. From January 2006 to March 2016, 19 patients underwent a reconstruction of scrotum defect in our unit through covering by skin graft or pedicled gracilis flap. In all cases the defect was due to Fournier's gangrene. The characteristics of the patients were studied and testicle hormonal function as well as satisfaction after the reconstruction were assessed, with a mean follow-up of 5 ± 3.6 years. Results. From 19 operated patients, 11 were included in the survey: 5 patients were reconstructed through pedicled gracilis muscle flap with skin graft and 6 by means of split thickness skin graft. There were no differences between the groups with regard to the values of testicular hormonal function. Nevertheless, differences were observed in favor of the reconstruction by pedicled gracilis flap regarding to satisfaction (93 versus 60 points), feelings of protection (98 versus 68 points), effects on sexual activity (20% versus 80%) and tactile rude sensibility of the area reconstructed (80% versus 0%). Conclusions. Reconstruction of scrotum defect through pedicled gracilis flap turned out to be in our sample a better aesthetic result and a higher satisfaction of the patient that the reconstruction by means of skin grafts. This article presents an editorial in which the authors comment on efforts to implement harm reduction programs for drug abusers, particularly people who inject drugs, in Mexico. They discuss the dangers of transmitting blood-borne diseases among those who share needles and examine the history of harm reduction plans in the country dating from the 1980s.

Anomalies in the complex topography of the pinna are often associated with disproportionate distances between the dimensions of its thirds, even with respect to the middle third of the face, forming macrotias that must be identified. If such correction is not carried out properly, the original deformation may even worsen in the postoperative period. For the reconstruction of auricular defects, different techniques have been described, involving excisions of the skin and cartilage with advancements, in order to regain a proportionate morphology. In the present work, we report a specific technique for the reduction of the upper third with a posterior approach, based on resection of the scapha and remodeling of the posterior skin surplus, associated with combined techniques of otoplasty to prevent the stigmata from previous surgery. Abstract: The presence of low concentrations of persistent pollutants in waters (μg/L or ng/L), also called micropollutants, brings as a consequence the need to apply advanced oxidation treatments for their removal. The successful application of solar-driven photo-Fenton to treat highly polluted wastewaters (g/L and mg/L of pollutants) has prompted its application to lowly polluted effluents. However, a decrease in contaminant concentration may involve an alteration in the intrinsic process phenomenon, which until now has only been widely studied at the milligram-per-litre level or higher with this process. The aim of this research was to study the combined influence of the operating variable (iron concentration) and the environmental variable (irradiance) and application on the photo-Fenton process at pH2.8 when removing micropollutants. For this purpose, experimentation was carried out at laboratory and pilot plant scales with a biocide mixture of acetamiprid (ACTM), thiabendazole (TBZ) and imazalil (IMZ) (100μg/L each) as the model pollutant. Results indicated that above 15WUV/m2 and a light path length of 5cm (the most commonly used path for this type of application) iron concentration limited the process and there was irradiance excess under these conditions. On the other hand, and given the circumstances of irradiance excess, a higher light path length (10cm) was assessed. Results showed that path lengths wider than 5cm are recommended since more wastewater volume could be treated with a higher process rate per surface unit. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In order to solve the trajectory tracking task in a wheeled mobile robot (WMR), a dynamic three-level controller is presented in this paper. The controller considers the mechanical structure, actuators, and power stage subsystems. Such a controller is designed as follows: At the high level is a dynamic control for the WMR (differential drive type). At the medium level is a PI current control for the actuators (DC motors). Lastly, at the low level is a differential flatness-based control for the power stage (DC/DC Buck power converters). The feasibility, robustness, and performance in closed-loop of the proposed controller are validated on a DDWMR prototype through Matlab-Simulink, the real-time interface ControlDesk, and a DS1104 board. The obtained results are experimentally assessed with a hierarchical tracking controller, recently reported in literature, that was also designed on the basis of the mechanical structure, actuators, and power stage subsystems. Although both controllers are robust when parametric disturbances are taken into account, the dynamic three-level tracking controller presented in this paper is better than the hierarchical tracking controller reported in literature. Context: Several factors contribute to the increase in breast cancer (BC) incidence, such as lifetime exposure to estrogen, early menarche and older ages at first birth, menopause, and the increased prevalence of postmenopausal obesity. In fact, there is an association between an increased BC risk and elevated estrogen levels, which may be involved in carcinogenesis via the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) encoded by the ESR1 gene. Interestingly, there is an antagonistic relationship between ERα and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in BC cells.Aims: Herein, we explore the combined effects of the ESR1 (XbaI, PvuII) and AhR polymorphisms on BC development in Mexican women according to their menopausal status.Settings and Design: Investigation was performed using a cases and controls design.Subjects and Methods: In a group of 96 cases diagnosed with BC and 111 healthy women, the single-nucleotide polymorphisms ESR1 (XbaI, PvuII) and AhR gene were identified by qPCR.Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test were used. Statistical analyses were conducted using the STATA statistical package (Version 10.1, STATA Corp., College Station, TX, USA).Results: The G/G XbaI genotype was more prevalent in the cases than in the controls (P = 0.008). Moreover, Mexican women carrying the XbaI (wild type [WT]/G or G/G) ESR1 genotype have higher risk (12.26-fold) for developing postmenopausal BC than individuals carrying the WT/WT genotype.Conclusions: The presence of the G/G genotype of XbaI may be considered a susceptibility allele in Mexican women. Due to increased postmenopausal BC risk, the XbaI (WT/G or G/G) alleles may be used as a postmenopausal predictive factor for BC in Mexican women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By using the hierarchical controller approach, a new solution for the control problem related to trajectory tracking in a differential drive wheeled mobile robot (DDWMR) is presented in this paper. For this aim, the dynamics of the three subsystems composing a DDWMR, i.e., the mechanical structure (differential drive type), the actuators (DC motors), and the power stage (DC/DC Buck power converters), are taken into account. The proposed hierarchical switched controller has three levels: the high level corresponds to a kinematic control for the mechanical structure; the medium level includes two controls based on differential flatness for the actuators; and the low level is linked to two cascade switched controls based on sliding modes and PI control for the power stage. The hierarchical switched controller was experimentally implemented on a DDWMR prototype via MATLAB-Simulink along with a DS1104 board. With the intention of assessing the performance of the switched controller, experimental results associated with a hierarchical average controller recently reported in literature are also presented here. The experimental results show the robustness of both controllers when parametric uncertainties are applied. However, the performance achieved with the switched controller introduced in the present paper is better than, or at least similar to, performance achieved with the average controller reported in literature. For this study, procyanidins generated through the autoxidation of (-)-epicatechin (Flavan-3-ol) under mildly acidic conditions (pH = 6.0) were characterized with ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Two procyanidins (types A and B) and a mix of oligomers were generated through the autoxidation of (-)-epicatechin. The antiproliferative activity of this mixture of procyanidins on MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-436, and MCF-7 breast cancer cells was evaluated. The results indicate that the procyanidin mixture inhibited the proliferation of breast cancer cells, where the activity of the procyanidin mixture was stronger than that of (-)-epicatechin. Moreover, the mechanism underlying the antiproliferative activity of procyanidins was investigated. The resulting data demonstrate that the procyanidins induced apoptotic cell death in a manner selective to cancerous cells. In particular, they caused the activation of intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways in the breast cancer cells. The findings obtained in this study demonstrate that the generation of procyanidins in vitro by the autoxidation of (-)-epicatechin has potential for the development of anti-breast cancer agents. Regarding histological classification of BC, the Estrogen (ER) and Progesterone (PR) receptors negative-expression cancer, named Triple-Negative BC (TNBC), represents the most aggressive type of this disease, making it a challenge for drug discovery. In this context, our research group, applying a well-established Virtual Screening (VS) protocol, in addition to docking and molecular dynamics simulations studies, yielded two ligands identified as 6 and 37 which were chemically synthesized and evaluated on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. Strikingly, 37 assayed on MDA-MB-231 (a TNBC cell model) depicted an outstanding value of 18.66 μM much lower than 65.67 μM yielded by Gossypol Bcl-2 inhibitor whose main disadvantage is to produce multiple toxic effects. Highlighted above, enforce the premise of the computational tools to find new therapeutic options against the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, as the results herein showed. The spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 is a molecular target of great interest for developing drug therapies against COVID-19 because S is responsible for the interaction of the virus with the host cell receptor. Currently, there is no outpatient safety treatment for COVID-19 disease. Furthermore, we consider it of worthy importance to evaluate experimentally the possible interaction of drugs (approved by the Food and Drug Administration) and the S, considering some previously in silico and clinical use. Then, the objective of this study was to demonstrate the in vitro interaction of ivermectin with S. The equilibrium dialysis technique with UV–Vis was performed to obtain the affinity and dissociation constants. In addition, the Drug Affinity Responsive Target Stability (DARTS) technique was used to demonstrate the in vitro interaction of S with ivermectin. The results indicate the interaction between ivermectin and the S with an association and dissociation constant of Ka = 1.22 µM−1 and Kd = 0.81 µM, respectively. The interaction was demonstrated in ratios of 1:50 pmol and 1:100 pmol (S: ivermectin) by the DARTS technique. The results obtained with these two different techniques demonstrate an interaction between S and ivermectin previously explored in silico, suggesting its clinical uses to stop the viral spread among susceptible human hosts. Epaltes mexicana is a plant widely used in traditional medicine and as a food in Mexico; however, its phytochemical and pharmacological studies are limited. This study aimed to identify the active secondary metabolites of Epaltes mexicana and determine its cytotoxic activity on cancer cell lines. Three organic extracts were obtained by maceration using n -hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol. The n -hexane extract was fractioned by simple column chromatography. Eight terpenes were annotated in collection 6 (C6) by LC-QTOF-MS using a gradient elution and Electrospray Ionization (ESI) in positive ion mode: 1) Gibberellin A15, 2) farfugin A, 3) dehydromyodesmone, 4) eremopetasitenin A1, 5) hydroxyisonobilin, 6) anhydrocinnzeylanine, 7) nigakilactone H and 8) taxodione. On the other hand, C6 showed a concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect on cancer cell lines MCF-7 (E max = 74.69 ± 6.19 % and IC 50 = 6.31 μg/mL), MDA-MB-231 (E max = 79.28 ± 12.12 % and IC 50 = 124.21 μg/mL), and SiHa (E max = 82.96 ± 6.02 % and IC 50 = 124.31 μg/mL). The C6 did not show a cytotoxic effect against DU-145 and non-cancerous cells from the mammary glands MCF-10A. These results indicate cytotoxic specificity on cancer cell lines and support the hypothesis that terpenes identified in E. mexicana must be investigated and developed for non-clinical and clinical trials as potential anti-cancer drugs. The mechanism is unclear for the reported protective effect of hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning against oxidative stress in tissues, and the distinct effects of hyperbaric oxygen applied after stress. The trained mice were divided into three groups: the control, hyperbaric oxygenation preconditioning, and hyperbaric oxygenation applied after mild (fasting) or hard (prolonged exercise) stress. After preconditioning, we observed a decrease in basal levels of nitric oxide, tetrahydrobiopterin, and catalase despite the drastic increase in inducible and endothelial nitric oxide synthases. Moreover, the basal levels of glutathione, related enzymes, and nitrosative stress only increased in the preconditioning group. The control and preconditioning groups showed a similar mild stress response of the endothelial and neuronal nitric oxide synthases. At the same time, the activity of all nitric oxide synthase, glutathione (GSH) in muscle, declined in the experimental groups but increased in control during hard stress. The results suggested that hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning provoked uncoupling of nitric oxide synthases and the elevated levels of GSH in muscle during this study, while hyperbaric oxygen applied after stress showed a lower level of GSH but higher recovery post-exercise levels in the majority of antioxidant enzymes. By developing a robust control strategy based on the differential flatness concept, this paper presents a solution for the bidirectional trajectory tracking task in the "full-bridge Buck inverter–DC motor" system. The robustness of the proposed control is achieved by taking advantage of the differential flatness property related to the mathematical model of the system. The performance of the control, designed via the flatness concept, is verified in two ways. The first is by implementing experimentally the flatness control and proposing different shapes for the desired angular velocity profiles. For this aim, a built prototype of the "full-bridge Buck inverter–DC motor" system, along with Matlab–Simulink and a DS1104 board from dSPACE are used. The second is via simulation results, i.e., by programming the system in closed-loop with the proposed control algorithm through Matlab–Simulink. The experimental and the simulation results are similar, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the designed robust control even when abrupt electrical variations are considered in the system. Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the second-most common cause of death in women worldwide. Because of this, the search for new drugs and targeted therapy to treat BC is an urgent and global need. Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is a promising anti-BC drug target associated with its development and progression. In the present work, the design and synthesis of a new family of dihydropyrazole-carbohydrazide derivatives (DPCH) derivatives focused on HDAC6 inhibitory activity is presented. Computational chemistry approaches were employed to rationalize the design and evaluate their physicochemical and toxic-biological properties. The new family of nine DPCH was synthesized and characterized. Compounds exhibited optimal physicochemical and toxicobiological properties for potential application as drugs to be used in humans. The in silico studies showed that compounds with –Br, –Cl, and –OH substituents had good affinity with the catalytic domain 2 of HDAC6 like the reference compounds. Nine DPCH derivatives were assayed on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 BC cell lines, showing antiproliferative activity with IC50 at μM range. Compound 2b showed, in vitro, an IC50 value of 12 ± 3 µM on human HDAC6. The antioxidant activity of DPCH derivatives showed that all the compounds exhibit antioxidant activity similar to that of ascorbic acid. In conclusion, the DPCH derivatives are promising drugs with therapeutic potential for the epigenetic treatment of BC, with low cytotoxicity towards healthy cells and important antioxidant activity. Flavonoids, a phenolic compounds class widely distributed in the plant kingdom, have attracted much interest for their implications on several health and disease processes. Usually, the consumption of this type of compounds is approximately 1 g/d, primarily obtained from cereals, chocolate, and dry legumes ensuring its beneficial role in maintaining the homeostasis of the human body. In this context, in cancer disease prominent data points to the role of flavonoids as adjuvant treatment aimed at the regression of the disease. GPER, an estrogen receptor on the cell surface, has been postulated as a probable orchestrator of the beneficial effects of several flavonoids through modulation/inhibition of various mechanisms that lead to cancer progression. Therefore, applying pocket and cavity protein detection and docking and molecular dynamics simulations (MD), we generate, from a cluster composed of 39 flavonoids, crucial insights into the potential role as GPER ligands, of Puerarin, Isoquercetin, Kaempferol 3-O-glucoside and Petunidin 3-O-glucoside, aglycones whose sugar moiety delimits a new described sugar-acceptor sub-cavity into the cavity binding site on the receptor, as well as of the probable activation mechanism of the receptor and the pivotal residues involved in it. Therapeutic decision‐making for older patients with stage IV non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with no identifiable activating mutation is complex. In this prospective study, we evaluated the usefulness of geriatric assessment (GA) in identifying frail patients. Stage IV NSCLC patients ≥70 years of age were evaluated with GA and classified according to this evaluation into three different groups: fit, vulnerable and frail. Classifications based on GA, treatment decision, toxicity and overall survival were analysed. In total, 93 patients were included. Median age was 76 (70–92) years and 90% were men. Most patients had performance status (PS) 0 or 1 (82%), unrelated to their GA (p = 0.006). GA groups were associated with overall survival (p = 0.000), treatment decision (p = 0.0001), and toxicity (p = 0.0001). Chemotherapy was delivered to 100% of fit patients, to 48% of vulnerable patients, and to only 8% of frail patients (p = 0.000). Toxicity was higher in vulnerable patients than in fit individuals (p = 0.000). Multivariable analysis showed PS (p = 0.001), active treatment (p < 0.001) and GA group (p = 0.001) to be prognostic factors related to survival. This paper has two aims. The first is to develop a robust hierarchical tracking controller for the DC/DC Buck-Boost–inverter–DC motor system. This controller considers a high level control for the inverter–DC motor subsystems and a low level control for the DC/DC Buck-Boost converter subsystem. Such controls solve the tracking task associated with the angular velocity of the motor shaft and the output voltage of the converter, respectively, via the differential flatness approach. The second aim is to present a comparison of the robust hierarchical controller to a passive controller. This, with the purpose of showing that performance achieved with the hierarchical controller proposed in this paper, is better than the one achieved with the passive controller. Both controllers are experimentally implemented on a prototype of the DC/DC Buck-Boost–inverter–DC motor system by using Matlab-Simulink along with the DS1104 board from dSPACE. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess a risk-adapted strategy for stage I seminoma guided by the presence of rete testis invasion. Methods: Between January 2013 and December 2015, a total of 135 consecutive patients with stage I seminoma from 18 Spanish tertiary hospitals were included in a prospective multicenter study. Median patient age was 38 years (range 22–60). Preoperative beta-human chorionic gonadotropin was elevated in 9.6% of patients. Rete testis invasion was present in 47.4% of patients. After orchiectomy, subjects with rete testis invasion were treated with 2 courses of adjuvant carboplatin (area under the curve of 7, with 21-day interval). Those without this risk factor were managed by surveillance. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: After a median follow-up time of 33 months, only 6 relapses were recorded (5 on surveillance, 1 after carboplatin). These cases were rescued with BEP or EP chemotherapy, and all 135 patients are currently disease free without sequelae. Three-year DFS was 92.0 and 98.2% for patients on surveillance and after carboplatin, respectively. Three-year OS was 100%. Conclusion: A risk-adapted approach based on rete testis invasion as a single risk factor is feasible and yielded an excellent outcome with a 3-year DFS of 94.9%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Candida bloodstream infection ( CBI) is associated with high mortality. The aim of this study was to compare the utility of the combined use of the Pitt Bacteremia Score ( PBS) and Charlson Comorbidity Index ( CCI) or Chronic Disease Score ( CDS) to predict mortality among patients with CBI. Thereby, all consecutive patients with CBI at our institution between 2010 and 2014 were included. The PBS was used to evaluate CBI severity and the CCI and CDS were used to assess comorbidities of patients with CBI. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios for 30-day mortality in models including the PBS and CCI or CDS. A total of 189 CBI episodes were identified. Logistic regression models including the PBS and either CCI or CDS showed that the combined use of a comorbidity score and a severity score significantly predicted 30-day mortality. The performance of the different models was similar. Aggregated scores of comorbidity ( CCI and CDS) and disease severity ( PBS) are useful for the prediction of 30-day mortality risk in patients with CBI. Epigenetic alterations are associated with cancer and their targeting is a promising approach for treatment of this disease. Among current epigenetic drugs, histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors induce changes in gene expression that can lead to cell death in tumors. Valproic acid (VPA) is a HDAC inhibitor that has antitumor activity at mM range. However, it is known that VPA is a hepatotoxic drug. Therefore, the aim of this study was to design a set of VPA derivatives adding the arylamine core of the suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) with different substituents at its carboxyl group. These derivatives were submitted to docking simulations to select the most promising compound. The compound 2 (N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2- propylpentanamide) was the best candidate to be synthesized and evaluated in vitro as an anticancer agent against HeLa, rhabdomyosarcoma and breast cancer cell lines. Compound 2 showed a better IC50 (mM range) than VPA (mM range) on these cancer cells. And also, 2 was particularly effective on triple negative breast cancer cells. Alternaria and Cladosporium are two fungal taxa whose spores (conidia) are included frequently in aerobiological studies of outdoor environments. Both spore types are present in the atmosphere of Malaga (Spain) throughout almost the entire year, although they reach their highest concentrations during spring and autumn. To establish predicting variables for daily and weekly fluctuations, Spearman's correlations and stepwise multiple regressions between spore concentrations (measured using a volumetric 7-day recorder) and meteorological variables were made with results obtained for both spore types in 1996 and 1997. Correlations and regressions were also made between the different taxa and their concentrations in different years. Significant and positive correlation coefficients were always obtained between spore concentrations of both taxa, followed by temperature, their concentrations in different years, sunshine hours and relative humidity (this last in a negative sense). For the two spore types we obtained higher correlation and regression coefficients using weekly data. We showed different regression models using weekly values. From the results and a practical point of view, it was concluded that weekly values of the atmospheric concentration of Alternaria spores can be predicted from the maximum temperature expected and its concentrations in the years sampled. As regards the atmospheric concentration of Cladoposrium spores, the weekly values can be predicted based on the concentration of Alternaria spores, thus saving the time and effort that would otherwise be employed in counting them by optical microscopy. Introduction. Anemia is one of the most common nutritional disorders in the world. Anemia levels in pregnant women can reach as high as 42% in some areas according to the World Health Organization. Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and morphologic types of anemia in pregnant women in their first prenatal visit in Yanga General Hospital in Cordoba, Veracruz. Materials and Methods. The study was performed over a ten month period at Hematology Department of Yanga General Hospital in Cordoba. A total of 1271 pregnant women were included in the study. The presence and types of anemia were determined from red blood cell results and erythrocyte indices using a CELL DYN 1400 system (Abbott Laboratories), and further compared with peripheral blood results. Results. Anemia was present in 47.7% of the pregnant women of ages 14-48, averaging 24 years of age. The main morphological types of anemias were hypochromic microcytic (48.8% prevalency), normocromic normocytic (38.4%), normocromic microcytic (12%) and hypochromic normocytic at 0.6% pervalency. Conclusions. Anemia was found to be a public health problem in the Yanga General Hospital, Cordoba, Veracruz. Hypocromic microcytic anemia was the most common form found in young pregnant women. Abstract: Fungal spores are of great interest in aerobiology and allergy due to their high incidence in both outdoor and indoor environments and their widely recognized ability to cause respiratory diseases and other pathologies. In this work, we study the spore content of the atmosphere of the Cave of Nerja, a karstic cavity and an important tourist attraction situated on the eastern coast of Malaga (southern Spain), which receives more than half a million visitors every year. This study was carried out over an uninterrupted period of 4years (2002–2005) with the aid of two Hirst-type volumetric pollen traps (Lanzoni VPPS 2000) situated in different halls of the cave. In the atmosphere of the Cave of Nerja, 72 different spore types were detected during the studied period and daily mean concentrations of up to 282,195 spores/m3 were reached. Thirty-five of the spore types detected are included within Ascomycota and Basidiomycota (19 and 16 types, respectively). Of the remaining spore types, 32 were categorized within the group of so-called imperfect fungi, while Oomycota and Myxomycota were represented by 2 and 3 spore types, respectively. Aspergillus/Penicillium was the most abundant spore type with a yearly mean percentage that represented 50% of the total, followed by Cladosporium. Finally, the origin of the fungal spores found inside the cave is discussed on the basis of the indoor/outdoor concentrations and the seasonal behaviour observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The excess of body fat and muscle mass loss in adulthood results in sarcopenic obesity, which is associated with disability and poor physical condition. A relationship among obesity, sarcopenia and oxidative stress also has been established. These aspects limit a good muscle function which is crucial in the independence of older women with and without sarcopenic obesity. This study had as objective to design a moderate intensity exercise program for older women with sarcopenic obesity, and to examine its effects on oxidative damage and physical function. We hypothesized that the exercise program will reduce oxidative damage and to improve the physical function of older women with sarcopenic obesity. Thirty healthy women (68 ± 5.05 years old) and 30 women with sarcopenic obesity (68.06 ± 5.75 years old) from the Integral Development of the Family rest home participated in the evaluation. The participants underwent evaluations of body composition, physical fitness (timed up-and-go [TUG] test, reaction time, gait speed, flexibility and muscle strength) and oxidative stress (oxidative damage to lipid and protein as well as evaluation of the antioxidant system) before and after of moderate intensity exercise program. The program consisted of warm-up, flexibility; aerobic exercises of moderate intensity (VO 2 max and HR max between 60% and 70%); isotonic exercises of low intensity with progressive weight (250 g of initial weight, with increase every two weeks until reaching 750 g of final weight) and global stretching at the end of each section. The program was monitored on a personal basis and undertaken three times a week over three months. In both groups, the program induced a five-fold increase in muscle strength, an increase in flexibility and improvement of fragility parameters (TUG and gait speed) (P ≤ 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, this exercise program decreased oxidative damage and increased antioxidant defense (P ≤ 0.001) to a greater extent in the sarcopenic group. It was concluded that moderate intensity exercise is an effective approach to promote changes in body composition, physical fitness and to reduce oxidative damage in older women with and without sarcopenic obesity. (−)-Epicatechin is a phenolic compound with antioxidant activity that is present in natural food and drinks, such as cocoa and red wine. Evidence suggests that (−)-epicatechin exhibits anticancer activity; however, its mechanism of action is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the anticancer effects of (−)-epicatechin and its mechanism of action in breast cancer cells. We assessed the anticancer activity by cell proliferation assays, apoptosis by DNA fragmentation and flow cytometry. The expression of proteins associated with apoptosis was analyzed by the human apoptosis array. MitoSOXTM Red and biomarkers of oxidative damage were used to measure the effect of (−)-epicatechin on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular damage, respectively. (−)-Epicatechin treatment caused a decreasing in the viability of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells. This cell death was associated with DNA fragmentation and an apoptotic proteomic profile. Further, (−)-epicatechin in MDA-MB-231 cells upregulated death receptor (DR4/DR5), increased the ROS production, and modulated pro-apoptotic proteins. In MCF-7 cells, (−)-epicatechin did not involve death receptor; however, an increase in ROS and the upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins (Bad and Bax) were observed. These changes were associated with the apoptosis activation through the intrinsic pathway. In conclusion, this study shows that (−)-epicatechin has anticancer activity in breast cancer cells and provides novel insight into the molecular mechanism of (−)-epicatechin to induce apoptosis. In this paper, the modeling and the experimental verification of the “bidirectional DC/DC boost converter–DC motor” system are presented. By using circuit theory along with the model of a DC motor, the mathematical model of the system is derived. This model was experimentally tested under time-varying duty cycles obtained via the system differential flatness property.
