Satellite observations of the Antarctic surface since the 1990s, coupled with geophysical surveys of the flow and form of its giant ice sheet, have revealed accelerating loss of ice to the oceans. This, coupled with a reduction in floating sea ice surrounding the continent and the occurrence of unprecedented heatwaves, point to a continent being changed irreversibly by fossil-fuel burning and the global heating that results. A changing Antarctic continent will have global consequences, including sea level rise of possibly more than 1 meter in this century (and much more afterward) and by a reduced ability to naturally reflect incoming solar energy—which would lead to further heating by absorption on land and at sea as the ice pack retreats. SUMMARY: Geothermal heat flow beneath the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is an important boundary condition for ice sheet dynamics, but is rarely measured directly and therefore is inferred indirectly from proxies (e.g. seismic structure, magnetic Curie depth, surface topography). We seek to improve the understanding of the relationship between heat flow and one such proxy—seismic structure—and determine how well heat flow data can be predicted from the structure (the characterization problem). We also seek to quantify the extent to which this relationship can be extrapolated from one continent to another (the transportability problem). To address these problems, we use direct heat flow observations and new seismic structural information in the contiguous United States and Europe, and construct three Machine Learning models of the relationship with different levels of complexity (Linear Regression, Decision Tree and Random Forest). We compare these models in terms of their interpretability, the predicted heat flow accuracy within a continent and the accuracy of the extrapolation between Europe and the United States. The Random Forest and Decision Tree models are the most accurate within a continent, while the Linear Regression and Decision Tree models are the most accurate upon extrapolation between continents. The Decision Tree model uniquely illuminates the regional variations of the relationship between heat flow and seismic structure. From the Decision Tree model, uppermost mantle shear wave speed, crustal shear wave speed and Moho depth together explain more than half of the observed heat flow variations in both the United States [ $r^2 \approx 0.6$ (coefficient of determination), $\mathrm{RMSE} \approx 8\, {\rm mW}\,{\rm m}^{-2}$ (Root Mean Squared Error)] and Europe ($r^2 \approx 0.5, \mathrm{RMSE} \approx 13\, {\rm mW}\,{\rm m}^{-2}$), such that uppermost mantle shear wave speed is the most important. Extrapolating the U.S.-trained models to Europe reasonably predicts the geographical distribution of heat flow [ $\rho = 0.48$ (correlation coefficient)], but not the absolute amplitude of the variations ($r^2 = 0.17$), similarly from Europe to the United States ($\rho = 0.66, r^2 = 0.24$). The deterioration of accuracy upon extrapolation is caused by differences between the continents in how seismic structure is imaged, the heat flow data and intrinsic crustal radiogenic heat production. Our methods have the potential to improve the reliability and resolution of heat flow inferences across Antarctica and the validation and cross-validation procedures we present can be applied to heat flow proxies other than seismic structure, which may help resolve inconsistencies between existing subglacial heat flow values inferred using different proxies. The ice stored in caves is a widespread yet neglected cryospheric component. The cold-adapted biodiversity of ice caves has received very little attention from research, despite the potential abundance of endemic troglobiotic and cryophilic species and their consequent sensitivity to the changing climate. In this study, we investigated the invertebrate diversity of two ice caves in Northeastern Italy (Bus delle Taccole and Caverna del Sieson, Veneto Region). During 2022 and 2023, we sampled, using pitfall traps, the invertebrates dwelling at different locations in each cave: the shaft base, an intermediate hall, and the cave bottom. At each cave location, we also collected ice samples, on which we measured the stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen (δ18O, δ2H), and monitored the air temperature with data-loggers. The two caves had different invertebrate communities, both dominated by a combination of troglobiotic and cryophilic taxa. Despite a low taxonomic richness, which was higher at Taccole (15 taxa) than at Sieson (11 taxa), both caves hosted rare/endemic species, four of which are not described yet. At each cave, the ice water isotopic signatures differed among cave locations, suggesting the ice had formed under different climatic conditions, and/or resulted from different frequencies of thawing/freezing events. Glacier flow modulates sea level and is governed largely by the viscous deformation of ice. Multiple molecular-scale mechanisms facilitate viscous deformation, but it remains unclear how each contributes to glacier-scale deformation. Here, we present a model of ice deformation that bridges laboratory and glacier scales, unifies existing estimates of the viscous parameters, and provides a framework for estimating the parameters from observations and incorporating flow laws derived from laboratory observations into glacier-flow models. Our results yield a map of the dominant deformation mechanisms in the Antarctic Ice Sheet, showing that, contrary to long-standing assumptions, dislocation creep, characterized by a value of the stress exponent n = 4, likely dominates in all fast-flowing areas. This increase from the canonical value of n = 3 dramatically alters the climate conditions under which marine ice sheets may become unstable and drive rapid rates of sea-level rise. This article explores the rematriation of a sacred rock, In' zhúje' waxóbe, from Lawrence to the Kaw Nation in Kansas. The rock holds cultural significance to the Kaw people and was previously displayed in a park in Lawrence. The article discusses the history of colonization and erasure of Indigenous peoples, as well as the efforts made by the Kaw Nation and community members to return the rock to its rightful place. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the trade-offs between a physically constrained neural network and a deep, convolutional neural network and to design a combined ML approach ("VarioCNN"). Our solution is provided in the framework of a cyberinfrastructure that includes a newly designed ML software, GEOCLASS-image (v1.0), modern high-resolution satellite image data sets (Maxar WorldView data), and instructions/descriptions that may facilitate solving similar spatial classification problems. Combining the advantages of the physically-driven connectionist-geostatistical classification method with those of an efficient CNN, VarioCNN provides a means for rapid and efficient extraction of complex geophysical information from submeter resolution satellite imagery. A retraining loop overcomes the difficulties of creating a labeled training data set. Computational analyses and developments are centered on a specific, but generalizable, geophysical problem: The classification of crevasse types that form during the surge of a glacier system. A surge is a glacial catastrophe, an acceleration of a glacier to typically 100–200 times its normal velocity. GEOCLASS-image is applied to study the current (2016-2024) surge in the Negribreen Glacier System, Svalbard. Stratovolcanoes are common globally, with high‐altitude summit regions that are often glacier‐clad and intersect the seasonal and perennial snow line. During an eruption, interaction between snow/ice and hot, pyroclastic deposits will potentially lead to extensive melt and steam production. This is particularly pertinent when pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) are emplaced onto and propagate over glacierised substrates. Generated melt and steam are incorporated into the flow, which can cause a transformation from a hot, dry granular flow, to a water‐saturated, sediment‐laden flow, termed a lahar. Both PDCs and ice‐melt lahars are highly hazardous due to their high energy during flow and long runout distances. Knowledge of the physics that underpin these interactions and the transformation to ice‐melt lahar is extremely limited, preventing accurate descriptions within hazard models. To physically constrain the thermal interactions we conduct static melting experiments, where a hot granular layer was emplaced onto an ice substrate. The rate of heat transfer through the particle layer, melt and steam generation were quantified. Experiments revealed systematic increases in melt and steam with increasing particle layer thicknesses and temperatures. We also present a one‐dimensional numerical model for heat transfer, calibrated against experimental data, capable of accurately predicting temperature and associated melting. Furthermore, similarity solutions are presented for early‐time melting which are used to benchmark our numerical scheme, and to provide rapid estimates for meltwater flux hydrographs. These data are vital for predicting melt volume and incorporation into PDCs required to facilitate the transformation to and evolution of ice‐melt lahars. When these volcanic avalanches occur on snow and glacier‐covered volcanoes, they produce steam and melt, that can mix with the volcanic avalanche, transforming it to a cool, wet volcanic mudflow. Both volcanic avalanches and mudflows are extremely destructive and dangerous due to their high speeds and long flow paths. Historically, these flows have resulted in many fatalities and extensive building and infrastructure damage. We investigate the conditions under which transformation from volcanic avalanches to mudflows can occur. We use small‐scale laboratory experiments to measure the transfer of heat, steam, and melt generation when a hot ash layer is emplaced onto an ice layer. A numerical model is presented to describe this heat transfer at large scales, like in natural volcanic settings. This can be used to estimate the amount of melt required to cause this transformation from volcanic avalanche to mudflow. This can help us predict the destructiveness of these interactive events, and help us convey the hazard to stakeholders, and populations living in regions affected by volcano‐ice interactions. Wind‐driven redistribution of surface snow is one of the key factors leading to heterogeneous accumulation of snow at small scales. Understanding the processes that lead to this heterogeneous accumulation is, therefore, of great importance to many glaciological and hydrological questions. High‐quality information on the wind field is necessary to realistically represent drifting snow. Here, we introduce a novel, intermediate‐complexity drifting and blowing snow module for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model that integrates seamlessly into the standard WRF infrastructure. The module also accounts for snow particle sublimation and considers the thermodynamic feedback on the atmospheric fields. In an idealized model environment the module was tested for physical consistency. Sensitivity experiments showed that drifting snow sublimation has on the one hand local effects on the erosion and deposition patterns and on the other hand non‐local effects on the larger‐scale atmosphere. The simple and computationally efficient implementation allows this module to be used for small‐scale and large‐scale simulations in polar and glaciated regions. Herein, fast fracture initiation in glacier ice is modeled using a Material Point Method and a simplified constitutive law describing tensile strain softening. Relying on a simple configuration where ice flows over a vertical step, crevasse patterns emerge and are consistent with previous observations reported in the literature. The model's few parameters allows identification of a single dimensionless number controlling fracture spacing and depth. This scaling law delineates two regimes. In the first one, ice thickness does not play a role and only ice tensile strength controls the spacing, giving rise to numerous surface crevasses, as observed in crevasse fields. In this regime, scaling can recover classical values for ice tensile strength from macroscopic field observations. The second regime, governed by ice bending, produces large‐scale, deep fractures resembling serac falls or calving events. Reconstructing Pleistocene glaciation timing and extent is vital for understanding paleoclimate. Whereas late Pleistocene glaciation has been studied extensively in western North American mountain ranges, the glacial history of the western Elk Range in Colorado remains understudied, particularly in the East River watershed, a site of intense scientific focus. Here we use cosmogenic nuclide exposure and depth–profile dating methods to determine the timing of glaciation in the East River watershed. We use glacier modeling to reconstruct paleoglacier extents and quantify past climate conditions. Our findings indicate that the East River glacier retreated from its maximum position approximately 17–18 ka, moving to recessional positions between 13 and 15 ka, before experiencing more substantial retreat to high-elevation cirques around 13 ka. Glacier modeling suggests that the maximum ice extents at 17–18 ka could have been sustained by temperature depressions of approximately −6.5°C compared to modern conditions, assuming consistent precipitation. Additionally, the ice position at 13–15 ka could have been supported by temperature depressions of around −4.0°C. These results offer insights into the deglaciation timeline in the East River watershed and broader western Elk Range as well as paleoclimate conditions during the late Pleistocene, which may aid future research on critical zone evolution in the East River watershed. Understanding the material properties and physical conditions of basal ice is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of Antarctic ice‐sheet dynamics. Yet, direct data are sparse and difficult to acquire. Here, we employ ultra‐wideband radar to map high‐backscatter zones near the glacier bed within East Antarctica's Jutulstraumen drainage basin. Our backscatter analysis reveals that the basal ice in an area of ∼10,000 km2 is composed of along‐flow oriented sediment‐laden basal ice units connected to the basal substrate, extending up to several hundred meters thick. Three‐dimensional thermomechanical modeling supports that these units form via basal freeze‐on of subglacial water that originated from further upstream. Our findings suggest that basal freeze‐on, and the entrainment and transport of subglacial material play a significant role in an accurate representation of material, physical, and rheological properties of the Antarctic ice sheet's basal ice, ultimately enhancing the accuracy and reliability of ice‐sheet modeling. Today, relatively warm Circumpolar Deep Water is melting Thwaites Glacier at the base of its ice shelf and at the grounding zone, contributing to significant ice retreat. Accelerating ice loss has been observed since the 1970s; however, it is unclear when this phase of significant melting initiated. We analyzed the marine sedimentary record to reconstruct Thwaites Glacier's history from the early Holocene to present. Marine geophysical surveys were carried out along the floating ice-shelf margin to identify core locations from various geomorphic settings. We use sedimentological data and physical properties to define sedimentary facies at seven core sites. Glaciomarine sediment deposits reveal that the grounded ice in the Amundsen Sea Embayment had already retreated to within ~45 km of the modern grounding zone prior to ca. 9,400 y ago. Sediments deposited within the past 100+ y record abrupt changes in environmental conditions. On seafloor highs, these shifts document ice-shelf thinning initiating at least as early as the 1940s. Sediments recovered from deep basins reflect a transition from ice proximal to slightly more distal conditions, suggesting ongoing grounding-zone retreat since the 1950s. The timing of ice-shelf unpinning from the seafloor for Thwaites Glacier coincides with similar records from neighboring Pine Island Glacier. Our work provides robust new evidence that glacier retreat in the Amundsen Sea was initiated in the mid-twentieth century, likely associated with climate variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ismenius Cavus (33.76° N, 17.05° W) is a large Martian basin that has been interpreted as an ancient paleolake. It is situated in the middle of the path Mamers Valles traces from the Cerulli Crater to the Borealis Basin. This ancient lake served as a key deposition area (or depocenter) for multiple lake chains originating in the southern highlands. The collected water was then transported downstream to the Borealis Basin. The ancient hydrologic activity of this zone is evidenced in the widespread appearance of valley networks and fretted channels, but especially in the presence of deltaic deposits converging in Ismenius Cavus. We made a hydrological and geomorphological analysis of two of these deltas, which compose a three-crater lake chain system. It was interpreted that both deltas, although being close to each other, were created by different processes and at different times. The Aracataca Delta was deposited during the Noachian by a valley network system. The Ariguani Delta, in turn, was the result of the discharge of a fretted channel carved by groundwater sapping. The transformations of the hydrologic systems in the Ismenius Cavus region were established by analyzing the change in the deltaic pulses over time. It was determined that the first hydrologic stage was dominated by widespread valley networks that probably represent subglacial hydrologic systems, a second stage started when these systems were replaced by groundwater activity; and finally, when the water sources were exhausted, a final stage of glacial processes prevailed until the present. Due to diminishing ice shelves in the Arctic, no doubt caused by climate change, previously unnavigable marine spaces are opening up, which in turn may provide new maritime routes. The shipping and maritime industry may capitalise on these routes more in the future as they provide shorter sailing times, and may assist with increasing oil and gas exploration and extraction in the region. However, increased maritime expansion in the Arctic comes with a number of unique risks and hazards for the insured and insurer. This opinion therefore seeks to discuss the implications of the multitude of risks that are associated with Arctic shipping from a marine insurance perspective and to highlight some of the gaps in existing regulatory frameworks. It is argued that marine insurers require improved data and risk management methodologies in order to better calculate the premiums of Hull & Machinery (H&M) and Protection & Indemnity (P&I) insurance policies for ships travelling through the Arctic. Until such time as these risks can be adequately assessed, evaluated, and managed by insurers; which of course is extremely difficult, due to the extreme environment, the unpredictability of climate change, a lack of key data, and the complexity of the various scenarios that can unfold in the Arctic environment, the practical viability of Arctic shipping remains doubtful. To date, insurers have paid out more in ship damage that has occurred in the Arctic than they have collected in premiums, which in itself is problematic. The joint ESA/NASA Mass-change And Geosciences International Constellation (MAGIC) has the objective to extend time-series from previous gravity missions, including an improvement of accuracy and spatio-temporal resolution. The long-term monitoring of Earth's gravity field carries information on mass change induced by water cycle, climate change and mass transport processes between atmosphere, cryosphere, oceans and solid Earth. MAGIC will be composed of two satellite pairs flying in different orbit planes. The NASA/DLR-led first pair (P1) is expected to be in a near-polar orbit around 500 km of altitude; while the second ESA-led pair (P2) is expected to be in an inclined orbit of 65°–70° at approximately 400 km altitude. The ESA-led pair P2 Next Generation Gravity Mission shall be launched after P1 in a staggered manner to form the MAGIC constellation. The addition of an inclined pair shall lead to reduction of temporal aliasing effects and consequently of reliance on de-aliasing models and post-processing. The main novelty of the MAGIC constellation is the delivery of mass-change products at higher spatial resolution, temporal (i.e. subweekly) resolution, shorter latency and higher accuracy than the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO). This will pave the way to new science applications and operational services. In this paper, an overview of various fields of science and service applications for hydrology, cryosphere, oceanography, solid Earth, climate change and geodesy is provided. These thematic fields and newly enabled applications and services were analysed in the frame of the initial ESA Science Support activities for MAGIC. The analyses of MAGIC scenarios for different application areas in the field of geosciences confirmed that the double-pair configuration will significantly enlarge the number of observable mass-change phenomena by resolving smaller spatial scales with an uncertainty that satisfies evolved user requirements expressed by international bodies such as IUGG. The required uncertainty levels of dedicated thematic fields met by MAGIC unfiltered Level-2 products will benefit hydrological applications by recovering more than 90 per cent of the major river basins worldwide at 260 km spatial resolution, cryosphere applications by enabling mass change signal separation in the interior of Greenland from those in the coastal zones and by resolving small-scale mass variability in challenging regions such as the Antarctic Peninsula, oceanography applications by monitoring meridional overturning circulation changes on timescales of years and decades, climate applications by detecting amplitude and phase changes of Terrestrial Water Storage after 30 yr in 64 and 56 per cent of the global land areas and solid Earth applications by lowering the Earthquake detection threshold from magnitude 8.8 to magnitude 7.4 with spatial resolution increased to 333 km. Polar regions and Greenland in particular are highly sensitive to global warming. Impacts on Greenland's glaciers may be observed through the increasing number of calving events. However, a direct assessment of the calving activity is limited due to the remoteness of polar regions and the cloudy weather which makes impossible a recurrent observation through satellite imagery. To tackle this issue, we exploit the seismological network deployed in Greenland which actively records seismic signals associated with calving events, hereinafter referred to as glacial earthquakes. These seismic signals present a broad frequency range and a wide diversity of waveform which make them difficult to discriminate from tectonic events as well as anthropogenic and natural noises. In this study, we start from two catalogues of known events, one for glacial earthquake events which occurred between 1993 and 2013 and one for earthquakes which occurred in the same time period, and we implement a detection algorithm based on the STA/LTA method to extract signals' events from continuous data. Then, we train and test a machine learning processing chain based on the Random Forest algorithm which allows us to automatically associate the events respectively with calving and tectonic activity, with a certain probability. Finally, we investigate 844 selected days spanning time of continuous data from the Greenland regional seismic network which results in a new, more exhaustive, catalogue of glacial earthquakes expanded of 1633 newly detected glacial events. Moreover, we extensively discuss the choice of the features used to describe glacial earthquakes, in particular the 39 new features created in this study which have drastically improved our results with 7 of the 10 best features being in the added set. The perspective of further expansion of the glacial earthquake catalogue applying the processing chain discussed in this paper on different time spans highlights how combining seismology and machine learning can increase our understanding of the spatio-temporal evolution of calving activity in remote regions. As the main contributor to global sea-level rise, the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has undergone significant mass change over the last two decades. The satellite mission of GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) and its follow-on mission (GRACE-FO) provide accurate observations but low-spatial resolution. In contrast, satellite altimetry provides observations at a high-spatial resolution but with large uncertainties, limiting the understanding of glacier-scale mass change. To derive accurate and high-spatial resolution mass change estimates from GRACE/GRACE-FO observations, we present a novel constraint mascon method in which the regularization matrix is constructed with the signal variances from satellite altimetry. Based on the proposed method, we derive a series of high-resolution (25 km × 25 km) monthly mascon solutions from 2002 April to September. The glacier-scale estimates from the input–output method agree better with those from our mascon solutions than those from the global mascons of CSR (Center for Space Research, the University of Texas), JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), and GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center), with a higher linear regression coefficient of 0.71. Benefitting from the greatly improved spatial resolution, our estimates provide the first accurate monthly glacier-scale mass change estimates from GRACE/GRACE-FO observations over the GrIS, to our knowledge. The results show that 20 of the 260 glaciers contributed to more than 42 per cent of the ice loss in the GrIS from 2002 to 2022. Most strikingly, the mass loss of Jakobshavn Isbrae was the most significant at –18.7 ± 0.05 Gt yr−1, accounting for 7.4 per cent of the total in the GrIS during the study period. Furthermore, we find that the SMB (surface mass balance) and ice-dynamics-related mass changes contribute nearly equally to the observed mass changes, but the corresponding spatiotemporal characteristics differ. SMB contributed the most to the mass change in 2019, while ice dynamics played the most dominant role in 2018. The Combination Service for Time-variable Gravity fields (COST-G) operationally provides combinations of monthly Earth gravity field models derived from observations of the microwave ranging instrument of the GRACE Follow-on (GRACE-FO) satellite mission, applying the quality control and combination methodology originally developed by the Horizon 2020 project European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management for the data of the GRACE satellites. In the frame of the follow-up Horizon 2020 project Global Gravity-based Groundwater Product (G3P), the GRACE-FO combination is used to derive global grids of groundwater storage anomalies. To meet the user requirements and achieve optimal signal-to-noise ratio, the combination has been further developed and extended to incorporate: • new time-series based on the alternative accelerometer transplant product generated in the frame of the project by the Institute of Geodesy at the Graz University of Technology, which specifically improves the estimation of the C 30 coefficient and also reduces the noise at medium to short wavelengths, and • the new time-series AIUB–GRACE-FO–RL02 of monthly GRACE-FO gravity fields, which is derived at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern by applying empirical noise modelling techniques. The COST-G quality control confirms the consistency of the contributing GRACE-FO time-series concerning the signal amplitude of seasonal hydrology in large river basins and the secular mass change in polar regions, but it also indicates rather diverse noise characteristics. The difference in the noise levels is taken into account in the combination process by relative weights derived by variance component estimation on the solution level. The weights are expected to be inverse proportional to the noise levels of the individual gravity field solutions. However, this expectation is violated when applying the weighting scheme as developed for the GRACE combination. The reason is found in the high-order coefficients of the gravity field, which are poorly determined from the low–low range-rate observations due to the observation geometry and suffer from aliasing due to the malfunctioning accelerometer onboard one of the GRACE-FO satellites. Hence, for the final G3P-combination a revised weighting scheme is applied where the gravity field coefficients beyond order 60 are excluded from the determination of the weights. The quality of the combined gravity fields is assessed by comparison of the noise content and the signal-to-noise ratio with the individual time-series. Independent validation is provided by the COST-G validation centre at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, where orbit fits of the low-flying Gravity and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer satellite are performed that confirm the high quality of the combined GRACE-FO gravity fields. By the end of the G3P project, the new combination scheme is implemented by COST-G as the new COST-G–GRACE-FO–RL02 and continued to be used for the operational GRACE-FO combination. The increased melting and rapid retreat of marine-terminating glaciers is a key contributor to sea-level rise. In glacial fjords with shallow sills common in Patagonia, Alaska, and other systems, these bathymetric features can act as a first-order control on the dynamics. However, our understanding of how this shallow bathymetry interacts with the subglacial discharge from the glacier and impacts the fjord circulation, water properties, and rates of submarine melting is limited. To address this gap, we conduct idealized numerical simulations using a coupled plume–ocean fjord model spanning a wide range of initial ocean conditions, sill depths, and subglacial discharge. A previously documented circulation regime leads to strong mixing and vertical transport over the sill, where up to ∼ 70 % of the colder water from the upper-layer outflow is refluxed into the deeper layer, cooling the incoming warm oceanic water by as much as 1 ∘C and reducing the stratification near the glacier front. When the initial stratification is relatively strong or the subglacial discharge is relatively weak, an additional unsteady circulation regime arises where the freshwater flow can become trapped below the sill depth for weeks to months, creating an effective cooling mechanism for the deep water. We also find that submarine melting often increases when a shallow sill is added to a glacial fjord due to the reduction of stratification – which increases submarine melting – dominating over the cooling effect as the oceanic inflow is modified by the presence of the sill. Models (paradigms) and former interpretations have often been presupposed when conducting field research. In the 19th century diamictites were for the first time interpreted to have originated from ancient glaciations. These interpretations have to a large part prevailed in the geological community, although there has been much progress in the areas of sedimentology, glaciology and physical geography. The present work is an effort to find criteria which most clearly discriminate between geological features produced by different processes, mainly glaciation and mass flow, the latter predominantly sediment gravity flows. Geological features which have been interpreted to have formed by glaciation throughout pre-Pleistocene Earth history are compared to similar-appearing geological features formed by mass flow and tectonics, so as to uncover variations in the appearance between features resulting from these different processes. The starting point for this comparison is documentation of the appearance of Quaternary products of erosion and deposition, in order to discern the origin of older formations. It is shown that the appearance and origin of pavements, dropstones, valleys, small-scale landforms, surface microtextures and most other geological features may in some cases be equivocal, but in others the details are indicative of the process which generated the feature. Detailed geological field data which have been compiled by geologists from outcrops of pre-Pleistocene strata, more often than is considered in most papers, commonly point to a mass flow origin, mainly a sediment gravity flow origin, rather than a glaciogenic origin. A process of multiple working hypotheses or interpretations is therefore advocated, based mainly on a comparison of the appearance of features formed by different geological processes documented from different research disciplines. In this study, we develop a model that allows to combine gravimetric and geometric data. By the combination, we improve the spatial resolution of the resulting mass balance estimate compared to a purely gravimetric one. The equivalent ice or firn density of the changing ice volume is estimated within a mathematical inversion model, which includes geometric information about the volumetric change of the ice sheet and the resulting gravity change. This gravity change is computed from monthly GRACE gravity fields. They have a limited spatial resolution of a few 100 km, but allow direct conclusions about the true mass changes over Greenland. The ice-volume changes are described by a product by the Climate Change Initiative of European Space Agency, which is based on altimetry data. They have a very fine spatial resolution (down to a few km), but are not directly sensitive to mass changes. By combining both data sets in a common mathematical model, the advantages of both data types (direct sensitivity to mass versus high spatial resolution) are made use of. In this way, we improve the spatial resolution of mass balance estimates over Greenland. This leads to a map of mass trends, which has the same spatial resolution as the input map of geometric changes, but which is consistent with the input gravity fields. It will enable improving the localization of mass change signals of ice sheets and glaciers, which are usually rather small-scale. We compare our estimates to the results of complementary studies regarding the total mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet and its surrounding land surface. The lithosphere and asthenosphere are fundamental to plate tectonics and many other earth processes. Vertical motions can be measured quickly and accurately by the satellite Global Positioning System, GPS and other methods. This paper describes a new analytic method for inferring the elastic and viscous properties of the lithosphere and upper mantle from the uplift rate and history of an area that has been subjected to past surface load changes. The viscous response time of the centre of loading is determined from the dimensions of the load, a loading history comprised of linear segments, an estimate of the flexural rigidity of the lithosphere and a single constraint such as the current central uplift rate. The response time is then interpreted in terms of the elastic properties of the lithosphere, and the elastic and viscous depth profiles of the underlying mantle. The method is described mathematically and then illustrated through analysis of the isostatic adjustment observed in nine areas affected by Little Ice Age glaciation. The method replicates published conclusions, extracts insights from an extensive literature, provides new ways to separate the impacts of the lithosphere and asthenosphere on uplift rates and emergence, and indicates the widespread geographic distribution of a thin asthenosphere. Ice streams are major contributors to ice sheet mass loss and sea level rise. Effects of their dynamic behaviour are imprinted into seismic properties, such as wave speeds and anisotropy. Here, we present results from a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) experiment in a deep ice-core borehole in the onset region of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, with focus on phenomenological and methodological aspects. A series of active seismic surface sources produced clear recordings of the P and S wavefield, including internal reflections, along a 1500 m long fibre-optic cable that was placed into the borehole. The combination of nonlinear traveltime tomography with a firn model constrained by multimode surface wave data, allows us to invert for P and S wave speeds with depth-dependent uncertainties on the order of only 10 m s−1, and vertical resolution of 20–70 m. The wave speed model in conjunction with the regularly spaced DAS data enable a straightforward separation of internal upward reflections followed by a reverse-time migration that provides a detailed reflectivity image of the ice. While the differences between P and S wave speeds hint at anisotropy related to crystal orientation fabric, the reflectivity image seems to carry a pronounced climatic imprint caused by rapid variations in grain size. Further improvements in resolution do not seem to be limited by the DAS channel spacing. Instead, the maximum frequency of body waves below ∼200 Hz, low signal-to-noise ratio caused by poor coupling, and systematic errors produced by the ray approximation, appear to be the leading-order issues. Among these, only the latter has a simple existing solution in the form of full-waveform inversion. Significant land uplift and horizontal motions have been recorded with Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in areas such as Alaska, Iceland and the Northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) as a result of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) due to ice melt after the Little Ice Age. Here, analysis of horizontal displacement rates can be of extra importance, as they are more sensitive to Earth properties in shallower layers than vertical displacement rates. Proper modelling of horizontal displacement rates with dedicated GIA models requires a spherical Earth with compressible rheology. However, in these small areas, the used GIA models are often incompressible using a Cartesian geometry to ease computation and in some cases allow for lateral viscosity changes or more complex rheology. We investigate the validity of modelled horizontal displacement rates using different approximations, that is using spherical or Cartesian Earth structures, and incompressible, material compressible or compressible rheology. Although the lack of self-gravity and sphericity compensate each other in the vertical, this is less the case for the horizontal. For a disc ice sheet with a radius just over 200 km and a thickness of 1000 m, differences due to sphericity are minimal and the modelled horizontal displacement rates of compressible Cartesian models differ from those simulated by a compressible spherical model by 0.63 mm a−1. Thus, compressible Cartesian GIA models can be applied for modelling horizontal displacement rates of small ice sheets like those in Alaska, Iceland and NAP. Unfortunately, the implementation of compressibility in Abaqus that we use here cannot be extended to spherical models as gravity can not be specified for a spherical body. A large ensemble of ice sheet projections to the end of the 21st century have been compiled within community-based initiatives. These ensembles allow for assessment of uncertainties in projections associated with climate forcing and a wide range of parameters governing ice sheet and shelf dynamics, including ice-ocean interactions. Herein, we compute geographically variable sea level 'fingerprints' associated with ∼320 simulations of polar ice sheet projections included in the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP6 and ∼180 projections of glacier mass changes from the Glacier Model Intercomparison Project. We find a strong correlation (coefficient > 0.97) between all fingerprints of Greenland Ice Sheet projections when considering a global region outside the near field of the ice sheet. Consistency in the fingerprints for the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) projections is much weaker, though correlation coefficients > 0.80 were found for all projections with global mean sea level (GMSL) greater than 10 cm. The far-field variability in the fingerprints associated with the AIS is due in large part to the sea level change driven by Earth rotation changes. The size and position of the AIS on the south pole makes the rotational component of the sea level fingerprint highly sensitive to the geometry of the ice mass flux, a geometry that becomes more consistent as the GMSL associated with the ice sheet projection increases. Finally, the fingerprints of glacier mass flux show an intermediate level of consistency, with contributions from Antarctic glaciers being the primary driver of decorrelation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract—A method for estimating ocean ice cover parameters (thickness, Young's modulus, Poisson ratio, and density) that does not require the use of a source is proposed and tested on experimental data. To realize the approach, two single-channel seismic receivers located on the ice surface are required to record the vertical component of the oscillatory velocity of the seismic noise. The spectral-correlation analysis of the mutual correlation function of the noise registered by the receivers allows us to estimate the dispersion dependence of the group velocity of the bending-gravity wave propagating along the ice plate. The solution of the inverse problem is based on analyzing the variance of not only the group but also the phase velocity, which allows us to increase the amount of primary data. The obtained estimates of ice parameters are consistent with the results of independent observations carried out during the experiment, as well as with the estimates of other authors obtained for ice characteristics in the region of the experiment. In Greenland, 87% of the glacierized area terminates in the ocean, but mass lost at the ice‐ocean interface, or frontal ablation, has not yet been fully quantified. Using measurements and models we calculate frontal ablation of Greenland's 213 outlet and 537 peripheral glaciers and find a total frontal ablation of 481.8 ± 24.0 for 2000–2010 and 510.2 ± 18.6 Gt a−1 for 2010–2020. Ice discharge accounted for ∼90% of frontal ablation during both periods, while mass loss due to terminus retreat comprised the remainder. Only 16 glaciers were responsible for the majority (>50%) of frontal ablation from 2010 to 2020. These estimates, along with the climatic‐basal balance, allow for a more complete accounting of Greenland Ice Sheet and peripheral glacier mass balance. In total, Greenland accounted for ∼90% of Northern Hemisphere frontal ablation for 2000–2010 and 2010–2020. Plain Language Summary: We estimate the mass of ice lost from all Greenland glaciers that entered the ocean during each of the last two decades. This ice loss at the front of these marine‐terminating glaciers is called frontal ablation and is approximately equal to the mass of icebergs entering the ocean. What is the relationship between vision and sound in more‐than‐human environmental sensing? This article traces an ethnography of glaciologists' experiences with technological sensing systems that surpass human sensing capabilities, producing an expansion of sensory knowledge that enmeshes both imagery and acoustics. Sound and vision emerge no longer as separate modalities, but in a united vocabulary of sensing in which the human and the machine are collaborators, producing a multi‐eared and multi‐eyed system by which icebergs and glaciers are observed and perceived as a quickly morphing process, rather than as a static object. It examines the manifold aesthetic variations and conversions of data from acoustic sensing systems into sounds and images that work together to reshape the scientific imagination of the cryosphere. This process ultimately reveals how technology changes perceptions and how glaciers, human bodies, and machines become intertwined with each other in a more‐than‐human system that holds the promise to diversify knowledge. As one of the main means of non-destructive testing, ultrasonic waves can effectively detect damage inside rock, which provides an important basis for the evaluation of rock mechanical properties. This study investigates the ultrasonic characteristics of frozen sandstone during loading and the effect of different temperatures. Combined with the deformation and failure process of the frozen sandstone sample, variation in ultrasonic velocity, amplitude, frequency spectrum, quality factor, and energy during loading were analyzed. The results show that (1) the amplitude of ultrasonic first increased, then decreased, then increased again with the increase in axial stress ( σ 1 ), and decreased with the decrease in temperature. (2) The amplitude and arrival time of the first wave decreased as the temperature decreased. The amplitude of the first wave increased with the increase in σ 1 , while the arrival time is reversed. (3) The ultrasonic velocity ( v p ) increased as the temperature decreased. v p increased rapidly in the compaction stage and increased slowly in the elastic stage. Before the peak stress, when the stress level of sandstone samples was 0.88–0.93, v p reached its peak and then decreased rapidly due to the initiation and expansion of cracks. (4) The spectral peaks increased with the increase in σ 1 and decreased with the decrease in temperature. In addition, the quality factor and accumulated energy of the ultrasonic increase first and then decrease during loading. Subglacial floods cause seismic tremors that can be located and tracked in space and time using a seismic array. Here, we shed light on the generating mechanisms of the seismic signals observed during the largest measured flood from the eastern Skaftá cauldron in the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland. We track the propagation of the flood in 2015 using two seismic arrays and a local seismic network in combination with GPS, hydrological, and geochemical data. We find that as the water drained from the subglacial lake beneath the cauldron, families of icequakes were generated in the area around the cauldron, while the glacier surface gradually subsided by more than 100 m. We detected a several-hours-long, non-harmonic tremor and high-frequency transient events migrating downglacier, following the subglacial flood front. We suggest that this tremor is composed of repeating, closely spaced icequakes that were generated as the glacier was being lifted, cracked, and deformed, thus enabling the subglacial water flow. When the lake had largely drained, the pressure within the underlying hydrothermal system dropped. At this time, we recorded minute-long tremor bursts emanating from the cauldron area, followed by an hour-long harmonic tremor each. We interpret these as being caused by hydrothermal explosions in the geothermal system within the cauldron and as being vigorous boiling in the crustal rocks, respectively, which is an interpretation corroborated by floodwater geochemical signals. Finally, the flood also led to detectable tremor due to more energetic flow in the rapids near Sveinstindur in the Skaftá river. We conclude that the flood generated five different seismic signal types that can be associated with five different geophysical processes, including the wide spectrum from brittle failure and explosions to boiling and turbulent flow. Bed topography is a critical parameter for determining the modern-day and future dynamics of ice sheets and their outlet glaciers. This is because the topography controls the state of stress for glaciers. At glacier termini, topography can influence the timing of terminus retreat by controlling access to warm ocean waters and/or by influencing the ability of a glacier terminus to retreat over bed bumps (moraines). Inland from the terminus, the topography can also influence where glacier retreat and thinning can stabilize. In part, this is because of knickpoints in bed topography created through glacial erosion that may influence the extent to which thinning can diffuse inland for an individual glacier and thus, the timing and magnitude of long-term mass loss. Here we provide a review of the current literature on these topics. While much of the reviewed literature assumes that topography is stable on relevant timescales to humans, new research suggests that topography may change much faster than previously thought and this further complicates our ability to project future outlet glacier change. Ice cliffs are features along ice sheet margins, along tropical mountain glaciers, at termini of mountain glaciers and on debris-covered glacier tongues, that have received scattered attention in literature. They cover small relative areas of glacier or margin surface respectively, but have been involved in two apparent anomalies. On the one hand, they have been identified as potential hotspots of extreme melt rates on debris-covered tongues contributing to their relatively rapid ablation, compared to the surrounding glacier surface. On the other hand, they appear where the ice margin is stable (or temporarily advancing) even under conditions of negative mass balance. In this manuscript, we recapitulate why ice cliffs remain interesting features to investigate and what we know about them so far. We conclude by suggesting to further investigate their genesis and variable morphology and their potential as windows into past climates and processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cosmogenic nuclide measurements in glacial deposits extend our knowledge of glacier chronologies beyond the observational record. The short half-life of in situ cosmogenic 14C makes it particularly useful for studying glacier chronologies, as resulting exposure ages are less sensitive to nuclide inheritance when compared with more commonly measured, long-lived nuclides. An increasing number of laboratories using an automated process to extract carbon from quartz has led to in situ 14C measurements in Antarctic samples at an accelerating rate over the past decade, shedding light on deglaciation in Antarctica. In situ 14C has had the greatest impact in the Weddell Sea Embayment, where inferences on the thickness of ice and timing of deglaciation were limited by inheritance in other cosmogenic nuclide systems. Future subglacial measurements of the nuclide hold much potential as they can provide direct evidence of proposed Holocene thinning and subsequent re-thickening of parts of the Antarctic ice sheets. Greenland's glacial fjords modulate the exchange between the ice sheet and ocean. Subglacial‐discharge‐driven plumes adjacent to glaciers may exert an important influence on fjord water properties, submarine glacier melting and the export of glacially‐modified waters to the shelf. Here we use a numerical plume model in conjunction with observations from proximal to 14 glaciers in northwest Greenland to assess the impact of these plumes on near‐glacier water properties. We find that in late summer, waters emanating from glacial plumes often make up >50% of the fjord water composition at intermediate depths. These plume waters are comprised largely of upwelled Atlantic Water, warming the near‐glacier water profile and likely increasing submarine melting. Our findings demonstrate the key role played by plumes in driving water modification in Greenland's fjords, and the potential for simple models to capture these impacts across a range of settings. High‐quality subsurface data provide new insights into the formation of Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM), an ~80 km3 sequence of stratified meltwater deposits resting >200 m above adjacent Lake Ontario. The ORM sedimentary succession comprises a three‐part regional architecture: (i) ~north–south channel sand–gravel; (ii) channel‐capping rhythmites; and (iii) east–west ridge sediments. The ORM depositional sequence overlies a regional unconformity with a cross‐cutting channel network resulting from ~north–south meltwater floods that transitioned progressively (falling stage) from a ~NNE to ENE flow direction (parallels Lake Ontario depression). Seismic profiles delineate the channels and channel fill characteristics of bank‐to‐bank channel sedimentation of thick gradational gravel–sand–mud sequences. Channel‐capping mud (~100–236 rhythmites) within multiple channels beneath the ORM landform mark a widespread interval of low‐energy, seasonally controlled subglacial pond deposition. During this quiescent period ice‐sheet thickness adjusted to flood‐induced stretching/thinning and re‐profiled slopes. New ice gradients led to east–west flow and deposition of the overlying third element, a sequence of high‐energy confined esker–fan sediments along ORM ridge. Close, sequential timing (~329 varve years) of channel, basin and ridge‐forming architectural elements supports naming this assemblage the ORM formation. Proposed ORM floods are analogous to Icelandic jökulhlaups based on the size, geometry and sedimentology. The observed rhythmite interval between flood events represents a short period (~236 years) of regional meltwater storage prior to east–west ORM flooding. The ORM channel and overlying esker‐fan sediment ridge represent two closely timed meltwater drainage events rather than formation by coalescing ice streams. The scale and timing of the ORM flood events are linked to rapid sea‐level rise, ~13.5 ka BP. This high‐resolution ORM sedimentological record may provide insights into depositional and glaciogenic controls of other large, stratified moraines. Icequakes associated with crevassing provide key information on stress fields and water flow pathways inside glaciers, conditions which are sensitive to temperature and precipitation. In this study, we analyse seismic data from 321 days recorded by five broad-band seismometers on Urumqi Glacier No. 1, Tianshan, China, to investigate the source characteristics of icequakes. We first apply a multidimensional autoregressive maximum-likelihood algorithm to detect 12 template events from 62 days of continuous waveform data. The centroid locations of the 12 template events are located using a grid-search approach. We then obtain a catalogue of 41   895 icequakes by compiling all seismic data through a template-matching method. The local magnitudes of all icequakes range between −3.3 and 0.5, with a completeness magnitude of −2.95 and Gutenberg–Richter b -value of 1.08. The particle motion and frequency contents of the 12 template events show that the dominant phases on the vertical component are Rayleigh waves at 5–40 Hz, suggesting that these icequakes were generated by near-surface crevasses. The average daily icequake number for each month and diurnal icequake variations show clear seasonal features. The icequakes may be related to growth of the surface crevasses due to additional melting water and precipitation in summer and to the thermal contraction of the ice body in winter. Subglacial hydrology can exert an important control on ice flow by affecting friction at the ice‐bedrock interface. Here, we report on a series of subglacial drainage events along the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS), initiating as far inland as 500 km from the margin of Zachariae Isstrøm. The drainage events exhibit local transient uplift, followed by prolonged subsidence, measured by differential satellite synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR). In downstream regions, drainage events are associated with temporary acceleration in ice flow. The high spatiotemporal resolution of the DInSAR measurements allows for a detailed mapping of the drainage propagation pathway. We show that multiple drainage cascades have occurred along the same pathway over the years 2020–2022. Finally, the propagation speed of subglacial water flow is found to vary greatly along NEGIS, suggesting that fundamental differences could exist in the subglacial environment. Plain Language Summary: The presence of water flowing beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet impacts the friction exerted on ice flowing from inland to marginal regions, potentially affecting the rate of sea level rise by increasing ice discharge. Direct observations of the hydrological system beneath glaciers are, however, limited due to inaccessibility. Here, we present satellite observations of localized ice uplift and subsidence, which indicate water propagating below the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream, from far inland to a major marine‐terminating glacier, Zachariae Isstrøm. Warming of the ocean waters surrounding Greenland plays a major role in driving glacier retreat and the contribution of glaciers to sea level rise. The melt rate at the junction of the ocean with grounded ice—or grounding line—is, however, not well known. Here, we employ a time series of satellite radar interferometry data from the German TanDEM-X mission, the Italian COSMO-SkyMed constellation, and the Finnish ICEYE constellation to document the grounding line migration and basal melt rates of Petermann Glacier, a major marine-based glacier of Northwest Greenland. We find that the grounding line migrates at tidal frequencies over a kilometer-wide (2 to 6 km) grounding zone, which is one order of magnitude larger than expected for grounding lines on a rigid bed. The highest ice shelf melt rates are recorded within the grounding zone with values from 60 ± 13 to 80 ± 15 m/y along laterally confined channels. As the grounding line retreated by 3.8 km in 2016 to 2022, it carved a cavity about 204 m in height where melt rates increased from 40 ± 11 m/y in 2016 to 2019 to 60 ± 15 m/y in 2020 to 2021. In 2022, the cavity remained open during the entire tidal cycle. Such high melt rates concentrated in kilometer-wide grounding zones contrast with the traditional plume model of grounding line melt which predicts zero melt. High rates of simulated basal melting in grounded glacier ice in numerical models will increase the glacier sensitivity to ocean warming and potentially double projections of sea level rise. We explored the potential of fibre optics coupled with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to measure the thickness and Young's modulus of an ice layer, using the properties of guided seismic waves. During two winter seasons (2020 and 2021), an optical fibre was deployed over one of the frozen Roberts Mountain lakes (at 2400 m a.s.l) near Grenoble (France) and we measured both the continuous ambient seismic noise as well as signals generated by active sources (hammer), with a DAS interrogator. Following a Bayesian scheme, we inverted the dispersion curves of longitudinal and flexural guided waves retrieved from the analysis of active shot gathers and obtained Young's modulus E = 3.4 ± 0.1 GPa and ice thickness h = 47 ± 1 cm from the second-year data. The ice thickness was consistent with field measurements. Field observations of porous and/or fracture ice may explain the relatively low effective Young's modulus (relative to pure ice), which may also be affected by a snow layer not included in the model. The drastic improvements in the inversion results between the two years are related to better coupling conditions (drone deployment before early freezing), more appropriate acquisition parameters (2 m gauge length), and the upper snow layers (less thick and less heterogeneous in the second year). Moreover, we were able to use the non-dispersive low-frequency noise associated with gravity waves to estimate the lake depth H = 5 m which is compatible with independent observations. Nonlinear trends (i.e. quadratic trends, usually defined as accelerations) in Antarctic ice mass loss due primarily to the complex climate warming forcing regimes have induced large uncertainty to future sea level projection. Here, we quantify the nonlinear and spatially varying mass losses in the Antarctic ice sheet during the last two decades using the satellite gravimetry data collected by Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its successor GRACE Follow-On. We use a regional inversion methodology to generate the mass change time-series over Antarctica. Our findings reveal that seven regions have evidenced significant nonlinear mass change. These regions are all concentrated along the coast of Antarctica and show spatially heterogeneous mass balance nonlinear trend patterns. Among them, the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE) and the Dronning Maud Land (DML) are found to be particularly sensitive to short-term climate variability. The GRACE-inferred nonlinear mass balance signal can be confirmed by independent Global Positioning System (GPS) observations, and the difference between the nonlinear vertical deformation trends estimated by GRACE and GPS, especially in ASE, is likely due to the imperfect correction of the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) effect. For Antarctic ice sheet as a whole, GRACE satellite gravimetry indicates an ice mass loss of −101.3 ± 18.0 Gt yr−1, with an accelerated loss of −6.4 ± 1.3 Gt yr−2 during 2002–2021. Subglacial till can deform when overriding ice exerts shear traction at the ice–till interface. This deformation leaves a strain signature in the till, aligning grains in the direction of ice flow and producing a range of diagnostic microstructures. Constraining the conditions that produce these kinematic indicators is key to interpreting the myriad of features found in basal till deposits. Here, we used a cryogenic ring shear device with transparent sample chamber walls to slip a ring of temperate ice over a till bed from which we examined the strain signature in the till. We used cameras mounted to the side of the ring shear and bead strings inserted in the till to estimate the strain distribution within the till layer. Following the completion of the experiment, we extracted and analyzed anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) samples and created thin sections of the till bed for microstructure analysis. We then compared the AMS and microstructures with the observed strain history to examine the relationship between kinematic indicators and strain in a setting where shear traction is supplied by ice. We found that AMS fabrics show a high degree of clustering in regions of high strain near the ice–till interface. In the uppermost zone of till, k1 eigenvector azimuths are generally aligned with ice flow, and S1 eigenvalues are high. However, S1 eigenvalues and the alignment of the k1 eigenvector with ice flow decrease nonlinearly with distance from the ice–till interface. Hydrologically active subglacial lakes can drain large volumes of water and sediment along subglacial pathways, affecting the motion and mass balance of ice masses and impacting downstream sediment dynamics. To date, only eight active lakes have been reported beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), and thus the understanding of their spatial distribution and dynamic processes is still lacking. Here, using ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2) ATL11 data, we identify 18 active subglacial lakes, 16 of which have not been previously reported. Multi-temporal ArcticDEM (digital elevation model of the Arctic) strip maps were used to extend the time series to verify lakes and determine their drainage history. The identification of active subglacial lakes beneath the GrIS is complicated by the occurrence of supraglacial lakes, which also fill and drain and are hypothesized to be almost co-located. We therefore used the temporal pattern of ice-surface elevation change to discriminate subglacial lakes and utilized the ability of ICESat-2 to penetrate through surface water to correct the elevation provided by the ATL11 data. A significant localized elevation anomaly (-16.03 –10.30 m yr -1) was measured in all detected subglacial lakes after correction, revealing that six subglacial lakes are twinned with supraglacial lakes. The active subglacial lakes have large upstream hydrological catchments and are located near or below the equilibrium line. Lakes have a median area of 1.20 km 2 , and 12 lakes exhibited positive elevation-change rates during the ICESat-2 period. These observations illustrate the potential for combining ICESat-2 and the ArcticDEM to differentiate small subglacial lakes in the ablation zone and beneath supraglacial lakes. Studying the reaction of glaciers to climate warming and the interactions of ice masses with the atmosphere is cognitively highly significant and contributes to understanding the climate change. The results from the modelling of glacier surface ablation by the temperature-index and energy balance models as well as the results of meteorological and glaciological studies on Werenskioldbreen (south Spitsbergen, Svalbard) in 2011 have been analysed to improve the understanding of the glacier system's functioning in the High Arctic. The energy balance modelling results showed that the radiation balance (58%) and sensible heat (42%) are the main factors influencing surface ablation on the glacier. The energy balance model offers a better fit to the measured ablation than the temperature-index model. These models have to be validated and calibrated with data from automatic weather stations, which provide the relevant gradient and calibration and validation. Glacial sediment research using thin sections began post-1945. Microsedimentology examines sediments at the microscopic level deriving insights into the processes of glacial erosion, transport, and deposition. Two issues exist (1) the difficulty by some in recognizing microstructures in thin section and (2) the absence of quantitative data making data reproduction difficult. The latter is hard to resolve but more image capture and software methodologies are now becoming available at reasonable costs. Thin sections are two-dimensional sections of three-dimensional objects, and this must be considered when measurements, fabrics and other data are assessed. Research into the microaspects of glacial sediments followed a typical scientific trajectory: thin sections description with little uniformity or common "language" for observed microstructures: standardization allowed comparison between different sediments; with standardization, came an open-ended classification; and with cross-comparison with multiple thin sections—a quantitative means of study needs developed. It has become apparent that the basic principles of structural geology had to be applied. Thus, micromorphology has subsumed into a microsedimentological study of glacial sediments where stress parameters, structural fabrics and the mapping of deformation structures and contextual integration allows an understanding of how these sediments have been formed. Examples of the development stages of glacial micromorphology/sedimentology are presented here as well as discussion of future avenues of study. In addition, multiple thin sections are used to illustrate the many aspects of glacial micromorphology and the parameters necessary to understand glacial sedimentology and the processes of glacial sedimentation. Glacial detachment is a newly emerged glacial hazard type, and more than 20 cases have been identified worldwide. The Xiao Ma Glacier in the Amney Machen Mountains, northeastern Tibetan Plateau, experienced an intensive detachment of the terminal low-slope glacier in 2004, forming a large dammed lake downstream and burying 2.27 km2 of grassland. An advanced multi-phase r.avaflow model was used to simulate this glacier detachment event to reconstruct its slide mechanism and dynamic process. In total, 9.77 × 106 m3 mass detached were categorized into three different phases according to their properties: the old ice remaining in the middle layer following the 1988–1997 glacier surge (47% of total volume), new ice in the upper layer originating from the 2003–2004 surge, which directly caused the 2004 detachment (48%), and subglacial water trapped in the bedrock (5%). The modeling results showed that the glacier detachment–induced debris flow reached a peak discharge of 0.25 × 106 m3/s at 40 s at the mouth of the Xiao Ma Valley, and the entire propagation process was completed within 140 s. The initially trapped meltwater dominated the debris flow state, with a maximum velocity of 103 m/s. The underlying old glacial ice was pushed and deposited to the front of the fan, and the new ice in the upper layer was primarily deposited over the middle fan. Additionally, several important parameters in the r.avaflow model were recommended for the optimal interval of values via optimality analysis, and the potential of the model to be extensively applied for large-scale risk assessment was discussed under relatively simple settings. The modeling of the 2004 Amney Machen glacier detachment has resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic processes of such events, which is significant for future glacier disaster simulation and assessment thereby improving regional strategies in hazard early warning, prevention, and mitigation.
