Understanding the impact that early psychosocial neglect has on the course of human development has implications for the millions of children around the world who are living in contexts of adversity. In the United States, approximately 76% of cases reported to child protective services involve neglect; worldwide, there are more than 150 million orphaned or abandoned children, including 10.5 million orphaned because of COVID-19. In much of the world, children without primary caregivers are reared in institutional settings. We review two decades of research based on the only randomized controlled trial of foster care as an alternative to institutional care. We report that children randomly assigned to continued care as usual (institutional care) suffer from persistent deficits in social, cognitive, and emotional development and show evidence of disruptions in brain development. By contrast, children randomly assigned to foster care show improvements in most domains of functioning, although the degree of recovery is in part a function of how old they were when placed into foster care and the stability of that placement. These findings have important implications for understanding critical periods in human development as well as elucidate the power of the psychosocial environment in shaping multiple domains of human development. Behavioral Inhibition is a temperament identified in the first years of life that enhances the risk for development of anxiety during late childhood and adolescence. Amongst children characterized with this temperament, only around 40 percent go on to develop anxiety disorders, meaning that more than half of these children do not. Over the past 20 years, research has documented within‐child and socio‐contextual factors that support differing developmental pathways. This review provides a historical perspective on the research documenting the origins of this temperament, its biological correlates, and the factors that enhance or mitigate risk for development of anxiety. We review as well, research findings from two longitudinal cohorts that have identified moderators of behavioral inhibition in understanding pathways to anxiety. Research on these moderators has led us to develop the Detection and Dual Control (DDC) framework to understand differing developmental trajectories among behaviorally inhibited children. In this review, we use this framework to explain why and how specific cognitive and socio‐contextual factors influence differential pathways to anxiety versus resilience. Labeled infinite trees provide combinatorial interpretations for many integer sequences generated by nested recurrence relations. Typically, such sequences are monotone increasing. Several of these sequences also have straightforward descriptions in terms of how often each value in the sequence occurs. In this paper, we generalize the most classical examples to a larger family of sequences parametrized by linear recurrence relations. Each of our sequences can be constructed in three different ways: via a nested recurrence relation, from labeled infinite trees, or by using Zeckendorf-like strings of digits to describe its frequency sequence. Generalized Geography is a combinatorial game played on a directed graph. Players take turns moving a token from vertex to vertex, deleting a vertex after moving the token away from it. A player unable to move loses. It is well known that the computational complexity of determining which player should win from a given position of Generalized Geography is pspace -complete. We introduce several rule variants to Generalized Geography, and we explore the computational complexity of determining the winner of positions of many resulting games. Among our results is a proof that determining the winner of a game known in the literature as Undirected Partizan Geography is pspace -complete, even when restricted to being played on a bipartite graph. Objective  This study aims to estimate the association between abnormal placental histopathology, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and preeclampsia (PEC) in twin pregnancies. Study Design  Retrospective cohort study of women with diamniotic twin pregnancies with live births at ≥24 weeks of gestation and available placental pathology. Findings were compared between women with and without FGR, which was defined as a birthweight <10th percentile, using singleton and twin growth curves, and those with and without PEC. The primary study outcome was a composite of abnormal placental histopathology. Chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Student's t -tests were used for analysis. Results  Among 859 patients with diamniotic twins, 806 (93.8%) had placental pathology. A total of 422 (52.4%) women had at least one twin with FGR, using a singleton growth curve. FGR affected 136 (16.9%) pregnancies when a twin growth curve was applied. There was no significant difference in composite outcome between groups, using either growth curve (45.5 vs. 44.8%, p  = 0.84; adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.06, 95% CI: 0.79–1.40 and 52.2 vs. 43.7%, p  = 0.07; aOR: 1.44, 95% CI: 0.90–2.10). A total of 122 of 789 (15.5%) patients developed PEC. There was no significant difference in composite outcome between patients with and without PEC (41.8 vs. 45.4%, p  = 0.46; aOR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.53–1.18). Conclusion  In twin pregnancies, FGR and PEC are not associated with abnormal placental histopathology. This suggests that the pathologic placental manifestations of these conditions may differ in twins and include factors other than those commonly described in singletons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a temperament characterized in early childhood by distress to novelty and avoidance of unfamiliar people, and it is one of the best-known risk factors for the development of social anxiety. However, nearly 60% of children with BI do not go on to meet criteria for social anxiety disorder. In this review we present an approach to understanding differential developmental trajectories among children with BI. We review research using laboratory-based tasks that isolate specific attention processes that enhance versus mitigate risk for social anxiety among behaviorally inhibited children and studies that suggest that BI is associated with heightened detection of novelty or threat. Moreover, stimulus-driven control processes, which we term "automatic control," increase the probability that behaviorally inhibited children display socially reticent behavior and develop social anxiety. In contrast, goal-driven control processes, which we term "planful control," decrease risk for anxiety. We suggest that these three categories of processes (detection, automatic control, and planful control) function together to determine whether behaviorally inhibited children are able to flexibly regulate their initial reactions to novelty, and in turn, decrease risk for social anxiety. Although laboratory-based tasks have identified these processes underlying risk and resilience, the challenge is linking them to the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors of behaviorally inhibited children in real-world contexts. Objective: We sought to determine if women with twin pregnancies and blood pressure (BP) above the 95th percentile but within normal ranges (i.e. less than 140 systolic and 90 diastolic) are at increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.Methods: Retrospective cohort study of all women with twin pregnancies being cared for by a single Maternal Fetal Medicine practice between 2012 and 2018. We identified all women who had a systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) above the 95th percentile but less than 140 systolic and 90 diastolic at any point during pregnancy. Based on prior publications, the 95th percentile was defined as: a SBP 121-139 mmHg up to 30 weeks or 131-139 mmHg after 30 weeks, a DBP 81-89 mmHg up to 34 weeks or 85-89 mmHg after 34 weeks. We excluded women diagnosed with chronic hypertension either before or during pregnancy. The primary outcome was the development of preeclampsia. Chi-square and logistic regression were used.Results: A total of 457 patients met the inclusion criteria, of whom 109 (23.9%) had either a systolic or diastolic BP above the 95th percentile (but normal) at any time during pregnancy. These women were significantly more likely to develop preeclampsia (30.3 versus 12.6%, p < .001, aOR 2.32 (1.31, 4.09)) and gestational hypertension without preeclampsia (16.5 versus 4.6%, p < .001, aOR 4.27 (2.01, 9.07)).Conclusions: In women with twin pregnancies, a high-normal systolic or diastolic BP (above 120 systolic or 80 diastolic prior to 30 weeks, or above 130 systolic or 84 diastolic after 30 weeks) is associated with a significantly increased risk of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia. Holistic conservation of ecosystem services (ES) requires a greater understanding of how the interactions of biotic and abiotic aspects of nature provide them. Currently, geodiversity, the diversity of geology, geomorphology, sediments and soils and hydrology, as well as the services that they provide in isolation of interactions with biotic nature – geosystem services (GS) – are overlooked in ES literature and frameworks. Here, we provide a series of three nested frameworks which together help to provide clarity for both the theoretical role of geodiversity in service production as well as the basis for real-world management strategies. First, we present the 'Geodiversity Flower', a framework that can be operationalised to provide clarity in terminology to decision-makers. Second, we present the 'Geo-Eco Services Framework', which establishes the difference between ES and GS. The final framework presented is the 'Geo-Eco Services Cascade Model', which builds upon the widely used ES cascade model by demonstrating how geodiversity interacts with biotic nature to simultaneously provide ES and GS. Providing a holistic model that integrates both biotic and abiotic nature alongside ES and GS allows for a greater understanding of the roles of abiotic and biotic nature to services and their associated benefits and values to people. The Devonian Sn-mineralized Heemskirk and barren Pieman Heads granites of western Tasmania (southeast Australia) contain abundant tourmaline-rich features, including orbicules, patches, cavities, and veins within their roof zones. The δ11B and δ18O compositions of tourmaline from these texturally different features range from − 21.7 to + 4.1‰ (average − 4.7 ± 4.0‰, n = 127), and from + 6.5 to + 14.9‰ (average + 10.7 ± 1.8‰, n = 38), respectively. These data suggest that the tourmaline-rich assemblages precipitated mostly from magmatic-hydrothermal fluids derived from their host plutons, mixed with minor external components sourced from metasedimentary, meta-ultramafic rocks, and/or meteoric water. The B-isotopic values increase sequentially from tourmaline patches to orbicules and/or cavities in both granites, probably caused by progressive volatile exsolution and systematic fluxing of aqueous boron-rich fluids from the S-type magmas during emplacement into the shallow crust. High degrees of fractional crystallization of the melt may have caused the exsolution of boron-rich hypersaline fluids from which the tourmaline orbicules and cavities formed. Bimodal δ11B populations (− 21.7 to − 12.7‰ and − 3.9 to + 4.0‰) imply that the granitic melts were mostly sourced from 10B-rich metapelitic rocks. The granites underwent fluid exsolution during the late magmatic stage that contributed to the widespread development of tourmaline-rich features and also to the formation of tin deposits associated with the Heemskirk Granite. Objective: There are a variety of maternal or fetal conditions that require late preterm or early term delivery. In cases where early delivery is indicated, optimal management is not always clear. Historically, obstetricians used amniocentesis to document fetal lung maturity, but recently, many have transitioned to administration of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS). The objective of this study was to compare neonatal outcomes between women undergoing amniocentesis or receiving ACS prior to scheduled cesarean delivery (CD) less than 39 weeks. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of women undergoing scheduled CD by one maternal-fetal medicine practice between 36 and 38 6/7 weeks, from 2005 to 2017. We identified women who underwent amniocentesis or received ACS within 2 weeks prior to delivery. Neonatal outcomes were compared between the two groups, with the primary outcome being neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Results: A total of 502 women were included, of whom 313 (62.4%) underwent amniocentesis and 189 (37.6%) received ACS. Overall, 55 (11.0%) of neonates were admitted to the NICU. NICU admission was not significantly different between groups (11.8 versus 9.5%, p=.46). This held true after adjusting for gestational age and other differences in baseline characteristics. There were no significant differences between groups for all other neonatal outcomes, including NICU admission for respiratory indications, respiratory support, neonatal greater than maternal length of stay, low Apgar scores, and neonatal death. Rates of hypoglycemia were low and not significantly different between groups (2.2% in the amniocentesis group versus 0.5% in the ACS group, p=.27). Diabetes was the only covariate significantly associated with NICU admission (aOR 3.19, 95% CI 1.35, 7.54). Conclusions: In women undergoing scheduled CD between 36 and 38 6/7 weeks, administration of ACS is associated with similar neonatal outcomes compared to amniocentesis. This supports the current notion that outcomes are similar with ACS compared to amniocentesis for late preterm and early term deliveries. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) success rates for patients with a prior cesarean delivery (CD) for arrest of descent, as well as determine any predictors for success.Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients delivered by a single MFM practice from 2005 to 2017 with a singleton pregnancy and one prior CD for arrest of descent. We estimated the rate and associated risk factors for successful VBAC.Results: We included 208 patients with one prior CD for arrest of descent, 100 (48.1%) of whom attempted a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) with a VBAC success rate was 84/100 (84%, 95% CI 76-90%). Among the women who attempted TOLAC, women with a prior vaginal delivery >24 weeks' had a significantly higher VBAC success rate (91.8% versus 71.8%, p = .01). Maternal age, body mass index, estimated fetal weight, induction of labor, and cervical dilation were not associated with a higher VBAC success rate.Conclusions: For women with a prior CD for arrest of descent, VBAC success rates are high. This suggests that arrest of descent is mostly dependent on factors unique to each pregnancy and not due to an inadequate pelvis or recurring conditions. Women with a prior CD for arrest of descent should not be discouraged from attempting TOLAC in a subsequent pregnancy due to concerns about the likelihood of success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chen et al. (2023) have proposed a scheme to define which services should be included as ecosystem services and which should be excluded so as to avoid "an all-encompassing metaphor that captures any benefit". We discuss the proposals, drawing attention in particular to definitions of 'natural capital' and 'ecosystems', the complexities of separating biotic from abiotic flows, and the importance of geodiversity and geosystem services in delivering societal benefits. We conclude that rather than trying to separate out bits of nature in order to draw the boundary of ecosystem services, it is perhaps time to avoid using 'nature' and 'biodiversity' as synonyms and think instead of a more holistic and integrated approach involving 'environmental', 'natural' or 'nature's services', in which the role of abiotic nature is fully recognised in both ecosystem services and non-ecosystem domains. • Drawing the boundary of ecosystem services is more complex than Chen et al. propose. • Geodiversity is an intricate part of ecosystems but also exists independent of the biosphere. • Many geosystem services benefit society and omitting these means that nature as a whole is undervalued. • 'Nature' should not be used as a synonym for 'biodiversity'. • A holistic and integrated approach covering all of 'nature's services' is proposed. Objective  This study aimed to report a case series of pregnant women in New York City with confirmed or presumed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection. Study Design  Beginning March 22, 2020, all pregnant women from one large obstetrical practice in New York City were contacted regularly to inquire about symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath, malaise, anosmia), or sick contacts. A running log was kept of these patients, as well as all patients who underwent COVID-19 testing. For this report, we included every patient with suspected COVID-19 infection, which was defined as at least two symptoms, or a positive COVID-19 nasopharyngeal polymerase chain reaction test. Results  From March 22, 2020 until April 30, 2020, 757 pregnant women in our practice were evaluated and 92 had known or suspected COVID-19 (12.2%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 10.0–14.7%). Of these 92 women, 33 (36%) had positive COVID-19 test results. Only one woman required hospital admission for 5 days due to COVID-19 (1.1%, 95% CI: 0.2–5.9%). One other woman received home oxygen. No women required mechanical ventilation and there were no maternal deaths. One woman had an unexplained fetal demise at 14 weeks' gestation around the time of her COVID-19 symptoms. Twenty one of the 92 women have delivered, and all were uncomplicated. Conclusions  Among 92 women with confirmed or presumed COVID-19, the overall morbidity was low. These preliminary results are encouraging for pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Key Points Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is prevalent in New York City. Children experiencing psychosocial deprivation as a result of early institutional rearing demonstrate many difficulties with memory and executive functioning (EF). To date, there is scant evidence that foster care placement remediates these difficulties during childhood. The current study examined longitudinal trajectories of memory and EF from childhood to adolescence in the Bucharest Early Intervention Project, a randomized controlled trial of foster care for institutionally reared children. We demonstrate that both ever- and never-institutionalized children show age-related improvements on several measures of memory and EF from age 8 to 16. Distinct patterns were observed for different domains of functioning: (i) Early-emerging disparities in attention and short-term visual memory, as well as spatial planning and problem solving, between ever- and never-institutionalized children persisted through adolescence; (ii) the gap in spatial working memory between ever- and never-institutionalized children widened by adolescence; and (iii) early difficulties in visual-spatial memory and new learning among children in foster care were mitigated by adolescence. Secondary analyses showed that higher resting EEG alpha power at age 8 predicted better EF outcomes in several domains at age 8, 12, and 16. These results suggest that early institutional rearing has enduring consequences for the development of memory and EF, with the possibility of catch-up among previously institutionalized children who start out with higher levels of problems. Finally, interindividual differences in brain activity relate to memory and EF across ages, thus highlighting one potential biological pathway through which early neglect impacts long-term cognitive functioning. Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzers can rapidly and inexpensively provide chemical concentrations of a range of geologically significant elements, often with instrument detection limits below 10 s of ppm. We compiled conventional XRF lithogeochemical data from Myra Falls to assess Ti/Zr discrimination criteria for volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) host rocks at Myra Falls. Robust and discrete Ti/Zr trends for coherent volcanic rock types were identified from this dataset. To test if pXRF analysis could reproduce these trends, two experiments were designed. Single-spot pXRF analyses of pressed powdered drill core samples and three-spot pXRF analyses measured directly on the flat, cut surface of drill core samples were compared to conventional XRF results from the same sample sets. Our results indicate that both pXRF sampling methods reproduce the laboratory based XRF results for Ti and Zr, and that there is no significant improvement in accuracy or precision between drill core powders and unprepared drill core samples. We propose a calibration, estimation of total measurement uncertainty, and data reduction procedure for systematic three-spot pXRF analysis of drill core samples to improve lithological logging of altered volcanic rock types. We suggest that pXRF analysis become a routine part of lithology logging providing, for some key elements, robust and time-efficient chemical analyses with results that can be used to define important, often cryptic, lithological boundaries at Myra Falls. Portable XRF therefore has the ability to improve geological and stratigraphic interpretations, which are vital for developing mineral exploration models, for VHMS deposits and other economic mineral systems. Objective: Recent studies have shown that for twin pregnancies with a cephalic presenting first twin, planned vaginal delivery is not associated with adverse short-term neonatal outcomes, as compared to planned cesarean delivery. Our objective was to compare long-term outcomes in twins, based on planned mode of delivery.Study Design: This was a prospective, observational cohort of twin pregnancies delivered by a single MFM practice. All the patients with a twin pregnancy >34 weeks delivered from 2005-2014 were surveyed regarding pediatric outcomes at or after 2 years of life. The survey was mail-based, with phone follow-up for nonresponses or for clarification of answers. Using chi-square, Student's t-tests, and regression analysis we compared outcomes between women who planned a vaginal (with active management of the second stage) versus cesarean delivery. The main outcome measures were: (1) a composite of major adverse outcomes (death, cerebral palsy, necrotizing enterocolitis, chronic renal, heart, or lung disease); (2) a composite of minor adverse outcomes (learning disability, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy).Results: Five hundred and thirty-two women met inclusion criteria and 354 (66.5%) responded. 178 (50.3%) women planned to have a cesarean delivery (100% of whom had a cesarean delivery) and 176 (49.7%) women planned to have a vaginal delivery (83% of whom had a vaginal delivery). The average age of the children at the time of the survey was 5.9 years. There were no differences in any pediatric outcomes between the two groups. After controlling for maternal age, IVF, obesity, and preeclampsia, the planned mode of delivery was not associated with a composite of major adverse outcomes (aOR 0.673, 95% CI 0.228, 1.985), nor a composite of minor adverse outcomes (aOR 0.767, 95% CI 0.496, 1.188).Conclusions: Planned vaginal delivery with active management of the second stage of labor in twin pregnancies >34 weeks is not associated with adverse childhood outcomes. Pregnancy is a time of excitement and anxiety. The reality for pregnant women is that their actions could affect their pregnancies and their fetuses. As such, they need to know what they should and should not do to minimize risk and optimize outcomes. Whereas this advice used to come from doctors, a few books, and some family and friends, in the age of the internet, women are now bombarded with information and recommendations, which are often confusing at best and conflicting at worst. The objective of this review is to present current, evidence-based recommendations for some of the things that pregnant women should and should not routinely do during pregnancy. Objective: The study examined differences between induced error‐related theta activity (4–7 Hz) and error‐related negativity (ERN) in youth and their unique associations with task performance as well as anxiety and worry during real‐life stress a year later. We hypothesized that induced theta, but not the ERN, would predict task performance. We also hypothesized that induced theta would predict less anxiety and worries during situational stress a year later, while ERN would predict more anxiety and worries. Method: Participants included 76 children aged 8–13 years who completed a flanker task while electroencephalogram (EEG) and behavioral data (t0) were collected. Approximately 1 year later (t1), during the first COVID‐19 lockdown, 40 families from the original sample completed a battery of online questionnaires to assess the children's stress‐related symptoms (anxiety, negative emotions and worries). We employed an analytical method that allowed us to differentiate between induced error‐related theta and the evoked ERN. Results: Induced error‐related theta, but not ERN, was associated with behavioral changes during the task, such as post‐error speeding. Furthermore, induced error‐related theta, but not ERN, was prospectively associated with less anxiety, worries, and fewer negative emotions a year later during COVID‐19 lockdown. Conclusions: Findings suggest ERN and error‐related theta are dissociable processes reflecting error monitoring in youth. Specifically, induced error‐related theta is more robustly associated with changes in behavior in the laboratory and with less anxiety and worries in real‐world settings. While extensive literature demonstrates that enhanced error‐related negativity (ERN) reflects a risk factor for anxiety, our findings suggest that error‐related theta activity is dissociable from ERN and may serve as a protective factor among youth. Furthermore, these results suggest that the assessment of error‐related theta could comprise a complementary tool in developing novel assessment or intervention approaches for pediatric anxiety. Objective: To compare wound complication rates in tertiary or higher-order cesarean delivery based on wound closure technique.Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all tertiary or higher-order cesarean deliveries performed by one group practice in a large academic medical center from 2005 to 2017. We excluded patients with a vertical skin incision. Although the study was not randomized, wound closure type was relatively uniform in this practice and based on time period: before 2011, the preferred closure was staple closure; after 2011, subcuticular suture closure was preferred. All patients received preoperative antibiotics and closure of subcutaneous tissue 2 cm deep or greater. The primary outcome was a wound complication, defined as a wound infection requiring antibiotics or a wound separation requiring wound packing or reclosure any time up to 6 weeks after delivery. Regression analysis was used to control for any significant differences at baseline between the groups.Results: There were 551 patients with tertiary or higher-order cesarean delivery, 192 (34.8%) of whom had staple closure and 359 (65.2%) of whom had suture closure. Suture closure was associated with a significantly lower rate of wound complication (4.7% [17/359, 95% CI 3.0%-7.5%] vs 11.5% [22/192, 95% CI 7.7%-16.7%], P=.003). On regression analysis controlling for the number of prior cesarean deliveries and the participation of a resident in the closure, suture closure remained independently associated with a lower risk of a wound complication (adjusted odds ratio 0.44, 95% CI 0.23-0.86).Conclusion: For women undergoing their third or higher-order cesarean delivery, suture closure is associated with a lower rate of wound complications. Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of screening tests for preterm birth (short cervical length [CL], positive fetal fibronectin (FFN), and amniotic fluid [AF] sludge) in twin gestations with histologic evidence of placental inflammation. Study Design Historical cohort study of 596 twin gestations delivered in a single maternal-fetal medicine practice with CL and FFN testing from 22 to 256/7 weeks. A short CLwas defined as ≤25 mm. Placental lesions evaluated were chronic and acute membrane inflammation and funisitis. Fischer's exact test and logistic regression were used. Results None of the screening tests was associated with chronic inflammation. All were associated with acute inflammation. On regression analysis, a short CL and positive FFN remained independently associated with acute inflammation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 5.66 and 2.51, respectively) and funisitis (aOR: 5.66 and 7.17, respectively). AF sludge was not independently associated with acute inflammation nor funisitis. Conclusion In twin gestations, a short CL and a positive FFN at 22 to 26 weeks are associated with acute but not chronic inflammation on placental histology. These findings imply that mechanisms underlying preterm birth in twins that result in positive screening tests weeks prior to delivery are not reflected as chronic placental inflammation. Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a temperament identified in early childhood that is associated with risk for anxiety disorders, yet only about half of behaviorally inhibited children manifest anxiety later in life. We compared brain function and behavior during extinction recall in a sample of nonanxious young adults characterized in childhood with BI (n = 22) or with no BI (n = 28). Three weeks after undergoing fear conditioning and extinction, participants completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging extinction recall task assessing memory and threat differentiation for conditioned stimuli. While self-report and psychophysiological measures of differential conditioning and extinction were similar across groups, BI-related differences in brain function emerged during extinction recall. Childhood BI was associated with greater activation in subgenual anterior cingulate cortex in response to cues signaling safety. Prediction of the geoenvironmental characteristics of mine waste materials typically relies on the static and kinetic testing of individual waste units. In reality, waste rock piles are heterogeneous landforms containing potentially acid forming (PAF) units juxtaposed with non-acid forming (NAF) units. Despite this, predictive geoenvironmental test work programs rarely characterise blends of waste materials. Through undertaking laboratory-based blended static testing and mineralogical assessments, a first insight into the leachate chemistry of a waste landform can be ascertained. This was tested using three waste units (Type A – alkaline, B – neutral and D – PAF; n = 31) obtained from the Savage River mine, Western Tasmania. Seven daughter blend types (1–7; n = 42) were prepared using different ratios of the individual waste types, and characterised by acid base accounting and mineralogical techniques. Blend types were NAF when a maximum of 20% of Type D was used, with daughter blend 4 (90% Type A + 10% Type D) the most inert when screened against ANZECC (2000) aquatic protection trigger values. This study demonstrates that through first-pass static blended testing, opportunities exist to improve waste-rock handling practices and design NAF waste piles once field trials, involving a range of particle sizes, have been conducted. The absence of typical caregiving, including warm and responsive parenting, has been suggested to significantly affect the young child's ability to form adaptive relationships with adults and peers. The Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP), a randomized controlled trial of foster/family care for young children with a history of institutionalization has provided the context to assess these relationships. Here we review data from the BEIP with specific focus on attachment. The findings clearly show the importance of early family care on the emergence of attachment, on the prevention of psychopathology, and on links between brain and social behavior. Objective The objective of this study was to determine if treatment of overt hypothyroidism in twin pregnancies reduces adverse outcomes associated with overt hypothyroidism in pregnancy. Materials and Methods This is a retrospective cohort study of all patients who were presented with twin gestations between 2005 and 2013 to a single obstetrical practice. Patients who were diagnosed with overt hypothyroidism were identified. Patients were followed up with serial thyroid function tests and treated appropriately. Rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes were compared between patients with and without hypothyroidism with p < 0.05 used for significance. Results In this study, 612 twin pregnancies were included; 85 patients were diagnosed with overt hypothyroidism. Patients with overt hypothyroidism were more likely to have had in vitro fertilization (78 vs. 62%; p < 0.01). After adjusting for confounding variables, patients with overt hypothyroidism had no increased risk of spontaneous preterm birth < 37 weeks' gestation (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.833; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.498-1.393), intrauterine growth restriction (aOR: 0.720; 95% CI: 0.446-1.163), gestational diabetes (aOR: 0.812; 95% CI: 0.353-1.871), or composite adverse outcomes (aOR: 0.659; 95% CI 0.391-1.111) compared with patients who did not have overt hypothyroidism. There was a trend toward decreased hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (aOR: 0.470; 95% CI: 0.234-0.944). Conclusion Our study shows that in twin gestations, there is no increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes between patients with treated overt hypothyroidism and those without overt hypothyroidism. Objective: To evaluate the clinical utility of a novel means of assessing the cervix by measuring the angle of the curvature and to evaluate the performance of this technique as well as two other commonly used techniques of cervical length assessment in predicting spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB).Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of singleton gestations with a history of SPTB. Transvaginal ultrasound images of cervical length obtained between 20 and 23 6/7 weeks were re-measured using three techniques: (1) straight linear distance between the internal and external os, (2) sum of two contiguous linear segments tracing the internal to the external os, and (3) measurement of the angle of the curve within the cervix using an electronic protractor. A short cervical length was defined as ≤25 mm.Results: A total of 181 women were included. The relative risk (RR) for SPTB by cervical angle ≤160° was 1.2 (95% CI 0.7-2.0) and the ROC curve revealed an area under the curve of 0.54 (95% CI 0.44-0.63). The RR for SPTB by short cervical length measured by the straight technique was 2.3 (95% CI 1.3-4.0) and by the segmental technique 2.1 (95% CI 1.2-3.8). There was a 99.4% agreement between the two techniques with an intraclass Kappa coefficient of 0.96.Conclusions: In women with a history of SPTB, cervical angle measurement does not correlate with the risk of SPTB. Objective: To analyze diagnostic accuracy of second trimester ultrasound fetal growth parameters as predictors of small for gestational age (SGA) birth weight. Methods: We reviewed the fetal biometry from 714 consecutive patients with second trimester ultrasounds. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) and abdominal circumference (AC) percentiles were tested as predictors of SGA at birth (<10‰). Results: 87 (12.2%) patients had an SGA baby. Patients with a second trimester EFW ≤25‰ were significantly more likely to have SGA at birth (24.2% versus 10.3%, p < 0.001). Similar results were seen for women with second trimester AC ≤25‰ (likelihood of SGA 21.9% versus 11.2%, p = 0.013). A second trimester EFW ≤25‰ was a better predictor of SGA at birth than a second trimester EFW ≤ 10‰ (Positive likelihood ratio 2.30 versus 2.09). In the second trimester, only 9 (1.3%) patients had an EFW 0-10‰, only 43 (6%) patients had an EFW 11-20‰, and only 46 (6.4%) patients had an EFW 91-99‰. Each other EFW centile had more than 10% of the patients. Conclusions: The incidence of second trimester EFW or AC ≤10‰ is less common than expected from standard tables. An EFW ≤25‰ and an AC ≤25‰ should be considered the second trimester marker for risk of SGA at birth. Objective: To evaluate cervical pessary as an intervention to prevent preterm birth in twin pregnancies with a short cervix.Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies managed by a single maternal-fetal medicine practice from 2005 to 2015. We included patients at 28 weeks of gestation or less who were diagnosed with a cervical length less than 20 mm. At the time of diagnosis, all patients were prescribed vaginal progesterone. Starting in 2013, they were also offered pessary placement in addition to vaginal progesterone. We compared outcomes between patients who received a pessary and matched women in a control group in a one-to-three ratio. Women in the control group were matched to women in the case group according to cervical length and gestational age (within 5 mm and 1 week, respectively, of the case patient at the time of pessary placement). We excluded patients with cerclage, monochorionic-monoamniotic placentation, major fetal congenital anomalies discovered before or after birth, patients with twin-twin transfusion syndrome, and patients for whom there were no appropriate controls. Chi-square, Fisher exact, and Student's t tests were used, as appropriate. Regression analysis was performed to control for significant differences at baseline.Results: Twenty-one patients received a cervical pessary, and they were compared with 63 matched women in the control group. As expected (as a result of matching), baseline gestational age (25.7±2.1 compared with 25.9±2.1 weeks of gestation, P=.671) and cervical length (10.9±3.6 mm compared with 11.9±4.5 mm, P=.327) were similar between the groups. Patients with a pessary had a significantly lower incidence of delivery at less than 32 weeks of gestation (1/21 [4.8%] compared with 18/63 [28.6%], adjusted P=.05), longer interval to delivery (65.2±16.8 compared with 52.1±24.3 days, adjusted P=.025), and a lower incidence of severe neonatal morbidity (2/21 [9.5%] compared with 22/63 [34.9%], adjusted P=.04).Conclusion: For twin pregnancies with a short cervix, the addition of a cervical pessary to vaginal progesterone is associated with prolonged pregnancy and reduced risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. Objective: To estimate the association between glycemic control and adverse outcomes in twin pregnancies with gestational diabetes (GDM). Study design: A cohort of patients with twin pregnancies and GDM were identified from one maternal–fetal medicine practice from 2005 to 2014. Patients with prepregnancy diabetes were excluded. First, outcomes were compared between patients with GDMA1 and GDMA2 (gestational age at delivery, birthweight, small for gestational age (SGA, birthweight <10th percentile), preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery). Then, finger stick glucose logs were reviewed and correlated with the risk of SGA and preeclampsia. Abnormal finger stick values were defined as: fasting ≥90 mg/dL, 1-h postprandial ≥140 mg/dL, 2-h postprandial ≥120 mg/dL. Results: Sixty-six patients with twin pregnancies and GDM were identified (incidence 9.1%). Comparing the 43 patients with GDMA1 to the 23 patients with GDMA2, outcomes were similar, aside from patients with GDMA1 having lower birthweight of the smaller twin (2184 ± 519 g versus 2438 ± 428 g,p = 0.040). The risk of preeclampsia was not associated with glycemic control. Patients with SGA had lower mean fasting values (83.3 ± 5.5 versus 87.2 ± 7.7 mg/dL,p = 0.033), and a lower percentage of abnormal fasting values (24.0% versus 36.9%,p = 0.040), abnormal post-breakfast values (9.9% versus 27.1%,p = 0.003), and total abnormal values (20.1% versus 27.7%,p = 0.055). Conclusion: In twin pregnancies with GDM, improved glycemic control is not associated with improved outcomes, and is associated with a higher risk of SGA. Memorializes Jerome Kagan (1929–2021). Jerome Kagan was born on February 25, 1929, in Newark, NJ. Jerry’s initial search for stable constructs focused on the cognitive. In articles in the 1960s, he examined the extent to which children formed analytic concepts, and whether they acted reflectively or impulsively. Jerry published the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFF) in 1965, which led to a spate of articles by Jerry and others on the uses of the MFF and on the dimension of reflection-impulsivity—groundbreaking work that can still inform research on what has more recently been termed executive function. In 1984, with his then-graduate student Cynthia Garcia-Coll, Jerry described a group of children who were vigilant when confronted with novelty, low on approach behavior and hesitant to speak in social situations. He suggested that this cluster of behaviors (and measured physiological reactivity) reflected a temperamental trait that they called behavioral inhibition. Jerry went on to study physiological reactions to threat among behaviorally inhibited children, their interactions with unfamiliar peers, and their developing personalities, with multiple longitudinal cohorts. A fundamental issue in cognitive neuroscience is how the brain encodes others' actions and intentions. In recent years, a potential advance in our knowledge on this issue is the discovery of mirror neurons in the motor cortex of the nonhuman primate. These neurons fire to both execution and observation of specific types of actions. Researchers use this evidence to fuel investigations of a human mirror system, suggesting a common neural code for perceptual and motor processes. Among the methods used for inferring mirror system activity in humans are changes in a particular frequency band in the electroencephalogram (EEG) called the mu rhythm. Mu frequency appears to decrease in amplitude (reflecting cortical activity) during both action execution and action observation. The current meta-analysis reviewed 85 studies (1,707 participants) of mu that infer human mirror system activity. Results demonstrated significant effect sizes for mu during execution (Cohen's d = 0.46, N = 701) as well as observation of action (Cohen's d = 0.31, N = 1,508), confirming a mirroring property in the EEG. A number of moderators were examined to determine the specificity of these effects. We frame these meta-analytic findings within the current discussion about the development and functions of a human mirror system, and conclude that changes in EEG mu activity provide a valid means for the study of human neural mirroring. Objective The objective of this study was to determine if first- and second-trimester biochemical markers for aneuploidy have an association with adverse pregnancy outcomes in twin gestations. Study Design A retrospective cohort study of patients who presented with dichorionic diamniotic twin gestations was performed. Patients with first-trimester low pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) or low free β human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), or second-trimester elevated α-fetoprotein (AFP), elevated inhibin A, elevated hCG, or low unconjugated estradiol were identified. The rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes were compared between patients with or without abnormal analytes with p < 0.05 used as significance. Results In this study, 340 pregnancies were included. Patients with a low PAPP-A had an increased risk for delivery < 37 weeks. Patients with an elevated second-trimester hCG had an increased risk for spontaneous delivery < 28 weeks and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission. Patients with an elevated inhibin A had an increased risk of spontaneous delivery at < 37 and NICU admission. Patients with an elevated AFP had an increased risk of a NICU admission. Background We examined whether the temperament of behavioral inhibition is a significant marker for psychopathology in early adulthood and whether such risk is buffered by peer social networks. Methods Participants ( N = 165) were from a prospective study spanning the first two decades of life. Temperament was characterized during infancy and early childhood. Extent of involvement in peer social networks was measured during adolescence, and psychopathology was assessed in early adulthood. Latent Class Analyses generated comprehensive variables at each of three study time-points. Regressions assessed (a) the direct effect of early behavioral inhibition on adult psychopathology (b) the moderating effect of adolescent involvement in social peer networks on the link between temperamental risk and adult psychopathology. Results Stable behavioral inhibition in early childhood was negatively associated with adult mental health ( R2 = .07, p = .005, β = −.26), specifically increasing risk for adult anxiety disorders ( R2 = .04, p = .037, β = .19). These temperament-pathology relations were significantly moderated by adolescent peer group social involvement and network size (Total R2 = .13, p = .027, β = −.22). Temperament predicted heightened risk for adult anxiety when adolescent social involvement was low ( p = .002, β = .43), but not when adolescent social involvement was high. Conclusions Stable behavioral inhibition throughout early childhood is a risk factor for adult anxiety disorders and interacts with adolescent social involvement to moderate risk. This is the first study to demonstrate the critical role of adolescent involvement in socially active networks in moderating long-lasting temperamental risk over the course of two decades, thus informing prevention/intervention approaches. Located in the accreted remnants of the Ordovician Macquarie Arc (Australia), Cadia East is the largest alkalic porphyry Au-Cu deposit currently known. The deposit is centered on a 2-km-long, northwest-trending volcanosedimentary subbasin, which was identified by mapping variations in the distribution and thickness of faulted sedimentary marker horizons. The normal faults that define the subbasin predate porphyry mineralization and are oriented parallel to a major arc-transverse lineament. Porphyry Au-Cu mineralization was controlled by reactivation of the subbasin during postorogenic extension as the Macquarie Arc was accreted to the Gondwana margin in the early Silurian. Dilation of the northwest-trending subbasin faults facilitated emplacement of alkalic porphyry dikes and associated sheeted quartz-sulfide veins that define the Cadia East orebody. During the middle Silurian, north-trending fault-bound marine basins buried Cadia East, significantly enhancing preservation of the ore system. These north-trending faults were optimally oriented for reactivation during Devonian east-directed compression, leaving the mineralized Cadia East volcanosedimentary subbasin largely intact. We identify the significance of reactivated premineralization structures within an arc-transverse lineament in controlling porphyry Au-Cu mineralization in a postsubduction setting. At Cadia East, the manifestation of such premineralization structures can be observed at regional, district, and deposit scales, and highlights the influence of preexisting crustal architecture on the structural character, geometry, and preservation potential of porphyry deposits throughout the arc life cycle. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a history of preterm birth or small for gestational age (SGA) in a singleton pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of recurrence of the same condition in a subsequent twin pregnancy. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies delivered in one maternal-fetal medicine practice from 2005 to 2014. Patients with a history of singleton preterm birth at less than 37 weeks of gestation were compared with patients with a history of singleton term birth and nulliparous patients. A similar analysis was performed for a history of SGA (birth weight less than 10%). RESULTS: Six hundred forty-seven twin pregnancies were included. The prior singleton gestational age at delivery was significantly positively correlated with the twin gestational age at delivery (P<.001), and the prior singleton birth weight was significantly positively correlated with the birth weight of the larger twin (P<.001) and the smaller twin (P<.001). The rate of twin preterm birth before 32 weeks of gestation was 3.5% in patients with a prior term birth, 9.2% in nulliparous patients, and 26% in patients with a prior preterm birth (P<.001). The rate of SGA in patients with a prior birth not complicated by SGA was 42.1%, in nulliparous women it was 54.4%, and in patients with a history of SGA it was 65.2% (P=.007). On regression analysis, prior preterm birth and SGA of a singleton pregnancy were independently associated with recurrence of the same condition in a subsequent twin pregnancy. CONCLUSION: Prior preterm birth and SGA in a singleton pregnancy increase the risk of the same condition in a subsequent twin pregnancy. Adolescence is an important developmental period, during which substantial changes occur in brain function and behavior. Several aspects of executive function, including response inhibition, improve during this period. Correspondingly, structural imaging studies have documented consistent decreases in cortical and subcortical gray matter volume, and postmortem histologic studies have found substantial (;40%) decreases in excitatory synapses in prefrontal cortex. Recent computational modeling work suggests that the change in synaptic density underlie improvements in task performance. These models also predict changes in neural dynamics related to the depth of attractor basins, where deeper basins can underlie better task performance. In this study, we analyzed task-related neural dynamics in a large cohort of longitudinally followed subjects (male and female) spanning early to late adolescence. We found that age correlated positively with behavioral performance in the Eriksen Flanker task. Older subjects were also characterized by deeper attractor basins around task related evoked EEG potentials during specific cognitive operations. The ability to monitor performance during a goal‐directed behavior differs among children and adults in ways that can be measured with several tasks and techniques. As well, recent work has shown that individual differences in error monitoring moderate temperamental risk for anxiety and that this moderation changes with age. We investigated age differences in neural responses linked to performance monitoring using a multimodal approach. The approach combined functional MRI and source localization of event‐related potentials (ERPs) in 12‐year‐old, 15‐year‐old, and adult participants. Neural generators of two components related to performance and error monitoring, the N2 and ERN, lay within specific areas of fMRI clusters. Whereas correlates of the N2 component appeared similar across age groups, age‐related differences manifested in the location of the generators of the ERN component. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) was the predominant source location for the 12‐year‐old group; this area manifested posteriorly for the 15‐year‐old and adult groups. A fMRI‐based ROI analysis confirmed this pattern of activity. These results suggest that changes in the underlying neural mechanisms are related to developmental changes in performance monitoring. Our research shows that developmental differences occur in neural responses during performance monitoring, with more posterior brain areas showing activation in adults and anterior regions in 12‐ and 15‐year‐old subjects. The fMRI cluster of results showed large activation in the ACC across ages. Source localization of ERP responses identified the ACC as the generator of the N2 ERP in all age groups, whereas generators of the ERN component revealed that the ACC is active during error monitoring in adolescence, whereas more posterior areas (PCC) are active in adults. Eyeblink conditioning (EBC) is a classical conditioning paradigm typically used to study the underlying neural processes of learning and memory. EBC has a well-defined neural circuitry, is non-invasive, and can be employed in human infants shortly after birth making it an ideal tool to use in both developing and special populations. In addition, abnormalities in the cerebellum, a region of the brain highly involved in EBC, have been implicated in a number of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In the current paper, we review studies that have employed EBC as a biomarker for several neurodevelopmental disorders including fetal alcohol syndrome, Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, specific language impairment, and schizophrenia. Progress in treating and preventing mental disorders may follow from research that integrates development, genetics, and neuroscience. This review first delineates how longitudinal research has identified three particular groups of disorders shown to differ on the basis of symptom trajectories and risk-factor profiles. In the next section, the review describes how research on genetic contributions to psychopathology has elucidated the nature of risk for two groups of disorders, the neurodevelopmental and psychotic disorders. In the third section, the review describes how research on environmental contributions to psychopathology has targeted early temperament, its associated perturbations in information-processing functions, and its relations to a third group of disorders, the emotional disorders. For all three groups of disorders, such integrative research has generated ideas about novel interventions. Objective: To determine the risk of difficulties with social communication and restricted/repetitive behaviors as well as the rate of autism in children institutionalized in early infancy and to assess the impact of a foster care intervention on ameliorating this risk. Method: Children abandoned at birth and raised in institutions in Bucharest, Romania were randomly assigned to a care-as-usual group (institutional care, CAUG), or placed in family-centered foster care (FCG) as part of the Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP). At approximately 10 years of age, the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) was administered to caregivers of children in both groups as well as to parents of a typically developing community sample (Never-Institutionalized group [NIG]) residing in Bucharest, Romania. Children scoring ≥12 on the SCQ underwent clinical evaluation for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Results: Caregivers of children with a history of institutionalization reported that these children had significantly more deviant behavior than never-institutionalized children on all subdomains of the SCQ (all p < 0.001). Children in the FCG had significantly lower scores on the SCQ than children in the CAUG (p < .001), particularly in the reciprocal social interaction domain, indicating that the intervention reduced problems in social communication. Three of 60 CAUG children, 2 of 57 FCG children, and none of the NIG children received a formal ASD diagnosis. Conclusion: Early institutional rearing was associated with an increased risk of social communication difficulties and ASD. This paper examines the predictive relations between two infant temperamental biases assessed at 4 months and inhibited behavior during the first 2 years of life in three independent samples from two research laboratories. Although each sample used slightly different criteria for classifying infants, the results across samples were consistent. Infants of both genders who displayed high levels of motor activity and distress to unfamiliar events were more inhibited at 14 months of age. The subword complexity of an infinite word counts the number of subwords of a given length, while the abelian complexity counts this number up to letter permutation. Although a lot of research has been done on the subword complexity of morphic words, i.e., words obtained as fixed points of iterated morphisms, little is known on their abelian complexity. In this paper, we undertake the classification of the asymptotic growths of the abelian complexities of fixed points of binary morphisms. Some general results we obtain stem from the concept of factorization of morphisms. We give an algorithm that yields all canonical factorizations of a given morphism, describe how to use it to check quickly whether a binary morphism is Sturmian, discuss how to fully factorize the Parry morphisms, and finally derive a complete classification of the abelian complexities of fixed points of uniform binary morphisms.
