Although various fluorescent sensors for biomolecules had been extensively reported, the effective fluorescent sensor was seldom reported for detecting oleanolic acid up to now. This work reports the first color-change fluorescence sensor for oleanolic acid based on a bridging bis-cyanostilbene derivative with chiral camphanic groups (C-BCS). C-BCS possessed the chartreuse fluorescence in aqueous media, which transferred to strong blue fluorescence in the presence of oleanolic acid. This sensing ability of C-BCS for oleanolic acid exhibited the high selectivity among all kinds of biomolecules and ions. The good linearity between the fluorescence intensity and concentration of oleanolic acid was acquired in the range of 0.2 × 10−6 to 8.0 × 10−6 M with the detecting limitation of 0.0582 μM. The 1:1 binding process was clarified as oleanolic acid located in the opening cavity composed of two bridging cyanostilbene units and two chiral camphanic groups based on multiple hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interaction. The detecting ability of C-BCS was applied on sensing oleanolic acid in thin-layer chromatography analysis, imprinting experiment, tap water, and tea samples, suggesting the effective on-site sensing abilities of C-BCS for oleanolic acid in real samples and daily life. Nitrogen fertilizer is an important kinetic energy for potato production. To study the effect of nitrogen(N) fertilizer application and the topdressing ratio on potato growth and yield, different N application levels: N75 (75 kg ha−1), N150 (150 kg ha−1), N225 (225 kg ha−1) and different N fertilizer base/topdressing ratios: T1 (2:8), T2 (5:5), T3 (8:2), and T4 (10:0) were used to find the best N fertilizer operation. The results showed that higher yields can be obtained when 120–180 kg ha−1 N was applied under the base/topdressing ratio of 8:2 in silt loam (sand–silt–clay: 29-50-21). The base N fertilizer dosage largely determined the root morphology, while topdressing fertilizer mainly affected the leaf photosystem, however, rhizosphere topdressing at the early stages of bud emergence did not immediately affect the leaf soluble protein and the sugar content. Topdressing N increased the tuber crude protein and ascorbic acid content to some extent, but had weak effect on the amylose/amylopectin ratio, for the starch content was mainly influenced by total N application. When base N fertilizer was low, it could be compensated by applying fertilizer during flowering, though when the amount of base fertilizer was sufficient, topdressing would cause a decrease in the average single potato weight and an increase in potato sets per plant, thereby reducing the commercial potato rate. Overall, adopting a suitable base/topdressing ratio can promote plant growth and improve tuber quality and yield. Combined electrochemical and spectroscopic tests successfully confirm the two-step 6e− redox mechanism. Fluid motion control has always been essential in electrowetting devices. Using the inkjet printing technique, an organic-inorganic hybrid material, polytitanosiloxane, was patterned as a secondary dielectric under the hydrophobic fluoropolymer coating in an optical electrowetting device (OEWD). The effects of different structural parameters of the inkjet-printed polytitanosiloxane (IPP) layer on both the fluid motion at the microscopic level and the macroscopic visual performances of the device were studied experimentally. The leakage-current test was also performed to evaluate the insulating performance of the composite dielectric layer. In addition, COMSOL Multiphysics was used to simulate the fluid flow inside the OEWD with/without the polytitanosiloxane layer. Summary: Viral infection of marine phytoplankton releases a variety of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The impact of viral DOM (vDOM) on the uninfected co‐occurring phytoplankton remains largely unknown. Here, we conducted transcriptomic analyses to study the effects of vDOM on the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus, which is the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth. Using Prochlorococcus MIT9313, we showed that its growth was not affected by vDOM, but many tRNAs increased in abundance. We tested tRNA‐gly and found that its abundance increased upon addition of glycine. The decreased transcript abundances of N metabolism genes also suggested that Prochlorococcus responded to organic N compounds in vDOM. Addition of vDOM to Prochlorococcus reduced the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II and CO2 fixation while increasing its respiration rate, consistent with differentially abundant transcripts related to photosynthesis and respiration. One of the highest positive fold‐changes was observed for the 6S RNA, a noncoding RNA functioning as a global transcriptional regulator in bacteria. The high level of 6S RNA might be responsible for some of the observed transcriptional responses. Taken together, our results revealed the transcriptional regulation of Prochlorococcus in response to viral lysis products and suggested its metabolic potential to utilize organic N compounds. Four novel triphenylene-Bodipy dyads were synthesized in yields of 32–38% and characterized by MS, NMR, elemental analysis. They exhibit good columnar liquid crystal behaviors at room temperature. The alkyl substitution on the Bodipy unit does not cause the disruption of the mesophase. They possess excellent fluorescence properties with high quantum yields in solution and the weak fluorescence in film. The alkyl substitutions on the Bodipy unit increase the fluorescence intensity and the introduction of triphenylene units reduce the aggregation-caused quenching of orderly stacking of Bodipy units. Two novel gallic trimer7and tetramer8based on acylhydrazone structures were designed and synthesized in yields 76% and 81%, respectively. Their structures were confirmed by1H NMR, ESI-MS, and elemental analysis. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. The mesomorphic results suggested that they possessed good room-temperature columnar liquid crystalline property with wide range of mesomorphic temperature. Three novel gallic monomer7, dimer10and trimer12with conjugated cyanuric core were designed and synthesised by Schiff-base condensation mode in yields of 80–90%. Their structures were characterised by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,1H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and elemental analyses. Their mesomorphic behaviours were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The gallic monomer7has no mesomorphic property, but the dimer10and trimer12possess good mesomorphic properties. The trimer12with high symmetry exhibited the typical hexagonal columnar liquid crystal at room temperature. The temperature range of mesophase is as wide as 149°C (14–163°C). Three novel gallic-calixarene derivatives 5 , 6 and 7 were prepared in yields of 57–76%. Their structures and conformations were confirmed by element analyses, IR, ESI-MS and NMR spectra. Compounds 5 and 6 with stable cone conformation show liquid crystalline behaviours but compound 7 with no stable conformation exhibits no mesophase. The gallic–cyanuric monomer 4 , gallic–cyanuric dimer 5 , gallic–cyanuric trimer 6 and gallic–cyanuric tetramer 7 containing multiple hydrogen bond were designed and synthesized in yields of 70–80%. Their symmetric structures were characterized by element analyses, FT-IR, ESI-MS, and NMR spectra. Their hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phases were confirmed by DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. The scope of mesomorphic temperature of compounds 5 , 6, and 7 is as wide as 45.7, 70.1, and 134.4 °C, respectively. The more gallic ether units are favorable for excellent mesophase. Renewable energy has become indispensable to improving human life, but its growth is hampered by a lack of cost-effective energy storage systems to solve the intermittency problem. Non-aqueous hybrid redox flow batteries (NAqHRFBs), based on lithium metal anode and organic redox molecules (redoxmers), have been investigated as an attractive energy storage option because of their high cell voltages and energy densities compared to other redox flow battery candidates. However, little is known about the economic potential of NAqHRFBs, as well as the operational and materials impacts. This work establishes a techno-economic model to analyze the capital costs of NAqHRFBs with selected organic redoxmers, including 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO). Sensitivity analyses for current density, area-specific resistance, cell voltage, electrolyte composition, redoxmer price, and equivalent molecular weight indicate the key factors in controlling NAqHRFB capital cost. To make the current NAqHRFB cost-effective, the first priority is to increase the operation current density over 10 times of those used in lab-scale tests, followed by adjusting redoxmer-related characteristics to afford more cost reduction space such as decreasing the unit price by ∼20 fold. The results have shed light on potential material development and system engineering directions to make NAqHRFBs viable for renewable energy storage. Due to their almost unlimited scalability, redox flow batteries can make versatile and affordable energy storage systems. Redox active materials (redoxmers) in these batteries largely define their electrochemical performance, including the life span of the battery that depends on the stability of charged redoxmers. In this study, we examine the effects of expanding the π-system in the arene rings on the chemical stability of dialkoxyarene redoxmers that are used to store positive charge in RFBs. When 1,4-dimethoxybenzene is π-extended to 1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene, a lower redox potential, improved kinetic stability, and longer cycling life are observed. However, when an additional ring is fused to make 9,10-dimethoxyanthracene, the radical cation undergoes rapid O -dealkylation possibly due to increased steric strain that drives methoxy out of the arene plane thus breaking the π-conjugation with O 2p orbitals. On the other hand, the planar structure of 1,4-dimethoxynaphthalene may facilitate second-order reactions of radical cations leading to their neutralization in the bulk. Our study suggests that extending the π-system changes reactivity in multiple (sometimes, opposite) ways, so lowering the oxidation potential through π-conjugation to improve redoxmer stability should be pursued with caution. Background: There are six known families of homing endonucleases, LAGLIDADG, GIY-YIG, HNH, His-Cys box, PD-(D/E)-XK, and EDxHD, which are characterized by their conserved residues. Previously, we discovered a novel homing endonuclease F-CphI encoded by ORF177 of cyanophage S-PM2. F-CphI does not resemble any characterized homing endonucleases. Instead, the C-terminus of F-CphI aligns well with the N-terminal catalytic domain of a Holliday junction DNA resolvase, phage T4 endonuclease VII (Endo VII). Results: A PSI-BLAST search resulted in a total of 313 Endo VII motif–containing sequences in sequenced genomes. Multiple sequence alignment showed that the catalytically important residues of T4 Endo VII were all well conserved in these proteins. Our site-directed mutagenesis studies further confirmed that the catalytically important residues of T4 Endo VII were also essential for F-CphI activity, and thus F-CphI might use a similar protein fold as Endo VII for DNA cleavage. A phylogenetic tree of the Endo VII motif–containing sequences showed that putative resolvases grouped into one clade while putative homing endonucleases and restriction endonucleases grouped into another clade. Conclusions: Based on the unique conserved residues, we proposed that F-CphI represents a new homing endonuclease family, which was named the DHHRN family. Recently, a new type of exchange bias (EB) after zero-field cooling has attracted considerable interest mainly in bulk magnetic competing systems. Here, we use a detailed magnetotransport investigation to probe the ground state and zero-field cooled EB (ZEB) in Mn 50 Ni 41 Sn 9 ribbon. Both ZEB and field cooled EB were detected in magnetoresistance results consistent with magnetic measurement. A pure spin-glass ground state is proposed based on parabolic shape of low-field magnetoresistance combined with AC magnetization, memory effect. The appearance of ZEB is attributed to the field-induced nucleation and growth of ferromagnetic domains in the spin glass matrix forming unidirectional anisotropy at the interface. However, how eukaryotes acquired bacterial‐like membrane lipids with a sn‐glycerol‐3‐phosphate (G3P) backbone instead of the archaeal‐like sn‐glycerol‐1‐phosphate (G1P) backbone remains unknown. In this study, we reconstituted archaeal lipid production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by expressing unsaturated archaeol‐synthesizing enzymes. Using Golden Gate cloning for pathway assembly, modular gene replacement was performed, revealing the potential biosynthesis of both G1P‐ and G3P‐based unsaturated archaeol by uncultured Asgard archaea. Unexpectedly, hybrid neutral lipids containing both archaeal isoprenoids and eukaryotic fatty acids were observed in recombinant S. cerevisiae. Premise of the study: Microsatellite markers were identified and characterized to study the genetic diversity and structure of Barringtonia racemosa (Lecythidaceae). Methods and Results: Based on the transcriptome data of B. racemosa, 30 primer pairs were initially designed and tested, of which 15 were successfully amplified and displayed clear polymorphisms across the 43 individuals from three distant populations tested in the study. The results showed that the number of alleles per locus ranged from two to seven and the expected heterozygosity and observed heterozygosity per locus varied from 0 to 0.772 and from 0 to 0.933, respectively. Conclusions: The expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers described here will be useful for studying genetic diversity and structure of B. racemosa. Furthermore, all loci were successfully cross-amplified in B. asiatica and B. acutangula and will be of great value for genetic studies across this genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, the core significance of this complex remains enigmatic in potato crop. We hypothesized that simultaneous application of PASP-Ca with potato genotypes characterized by substantial root systems and high genetic potentials for nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) would best address this knowledge gap.The synergistic effect of various PASP-Ca treatments on morph physiological, N-related, and enzymatic parameters coupled with their transcript levels (shoot and root) in four potato genotypes having contrasting NUEs under low and high N supplies in aeroponics.PASP-Ca markedly boosted plant growth, yield components, and photosynthetic efficiency, with pronounced effects observed in nitrogen-efficient genotypes, especially Qingshu-9, emphasizing the importance of genotype selection in optimizing nitrogen utilization. Moreover, PASP-Ca treatments, particularly LN-P100 significantly enhances root system architecture (RSA), contributing to expanded root dimensions and improved nutrient acquisition capacity, especially under nitrogen-deficient conditions. Abstract: Aim: The genus Xylocarpus contains two mangrove species, X. granatum and X. moluccensis, and a rare non‐mangrove, X. rumphii. The two mangrove species are ideal models to study the biogeography of coastal plants with a unique dispersal ability, that is via buoyant propagules. We constructed the phylogeny of Xylocarpus and its relatives and determined the population structures of the two mangrove species. We aimed to elucidate the roles of continental drift and long‐distance dispersal (LDD) in shaping the present‐day distribution of Xylocarpus and to determine the factors affecting the patterns of population differentiation. Location: The Indo‐West Pacific (IWP) region. Methods: Thirty populations of X. granatum, 15 of X. moluccensis and four of X. rumphii were sampled across the IWP region. Five chloroplast DNA intergenic spacers were sequenced for Xylocarpus and outgroup species to determine divergence times. The genetic diversity, divergence and structure of the two mangrove species were further analysed using five nuclear and two chloroplast DNA loci. Migrations between oceanic regions were estimated. Results: The genus Xylocarpus diverged from its sister genus Carapa approximately 19.4 Ma. The populations of X. granatum differentiated into three groups, with genetic breaks present across the Malay Peninsula and Wallacea, whereas X. moluccensis populations differentiated into two groups, with a genetic break present only across the Malay Peninsula. Migration was also observed between populations of the Southeast Asian and Australasian regions in X. moluccensis but not in X. granatum. Main conclusion: Since Xylocarpus originated after the breakup of Gondwana and subsequent plate motions, its current distribution range should have been facilitated by present‐day LDD instead of past continental drift. Despite the capacity of LDD, the presence of differing population structures across land barriers (the Sunda and Sahul Shelves) and ocean currents indicated differential limitations in the dispersal capabilities of X. granatum and X. moluccensis.
