An essay focusing on American author Elizabeth Bishop and her discovery of the work of French surrealist poet Max Jacob while staying in Paris during her travels in France is presented. It discusses her translation of several of his poems including the verse poems "Rain" (La Pluie)" and "Purgatory" (Purgatoire) and prose poems "Ravignan Street" (La rue Ravignan) and "Urgency" (La Presse) and includes a brief overview of Jacob's life including his friendship with Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.
