Ambulatory surgery is growing faster than the traditional, inpatient surgery, indicating a real change in terms of patients care. This development is strongly supported by the public authorities in France who have issued a target of 50% share of outpatient surgical activity from 2016. This average rate represents, of course, very different realities in terms of acts, but this change is accompanied by incentive policies including financial and organizational ones. The cancer surgery, despite its specificity, is already evolving largely to these new arrangements. As for general surgery, further development should take into account the characteristics of some acts and organizational consequences in order to keep one patient on two overnights after surgery.
