Neutrinos are perhaps the least understood of the known denizens of the subatomic world. They have nearly no mass, interact only via the weak nuclear force and gravity, and, perhaps most surprising, the three known species of neutrinos can transform from one variant into another. This transformation, called neutrino oscillation, has been demonstrated only relatively recently and has led to speculation that there might be another, even more mysterious, neutrino variant, called the sterile neutrino. While the sterile neutrino remains a hypothetical particle, it is an interesting one and searches for it are a key research focus of the world's neutrino scientist community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Over the last decade, there has been enormous effort to measure neutrino interaction cross sections important to oscillation experiments. However, a number of results from modern experiments appear to be in tension with each other, despite purporting to measure the same processes. The TENSIONS2016 workshop was held at University of Pittsburgh July 24–31, 2016 and was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Particle Physics, Astronomy, and Cosmology Center (PITT PACC). The focus was on bringing experts from three experimental collaborations together to compare results in detail and try to find the source of tension by clarifying and comparing signal definitions and the analysis strategies used for each measurement. Single neutral pion production via muon antineutrino charged-current interactions in plastic scintillator (CH) is studied using the MINERvA detector exposed to the NuMI low-energy, wideband antineutrino beam at Fermilab. Measurement of this process constrains models of neutral pion production in nuclei, which is important because the neutral-current analog is a background for ν ¯ e appearance oscillation experiments. The differential cross sections for π 0 momentum and production angle, for events with a single observed π 0 and no charged pions, are presented and compared to model predictions. The MINERvA collaboration operated a scaled-down replica of thesolid scintillator tracking and sampling calorimeter regions of the MINERvA detector in a hadron test beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. This paper reports measurements with samples of protons, pions, and electrons from 0.35 to 2.0 GeV/c momentum. The calorimetric response to protons, pions, and electrons is obtained from these data. A measurement of the parameter in Birks׳ law and an estimate of the tracking efficiency are extracted from the proton sample. Overall the data are well described by a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of the detector and particle interactions with agreements better than 4% for the calorimetric response, though some features of the data are not precisely modeled. These measurements are used to tune the MINERvA detector simulation and evaluate systematic uncertainties in support of the MINERvA neutrino cross-section measurement program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neutrino-induced coherent charged pion production on nuclei ν(-);μA → μ±π∓A is a rare, inelastic interaction in which a small squared four-momentum ∣t∣ is transferred to the recoil nucleus, leaving it intact in the reaction. In the scintillator tracker of MINERvA, we remove events with evidence of particles from nuclear breakup and reconstruct ∣t∣ from the final-state pion and muon. We select low ∣t∣ events to isolate a sample rich in coherent candidates. By selecting low ∣t∣ events, we produce a model-independent measurement of the differential cross section for coherent scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos on carbon. Diagnosing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be challenging as laboratory screening methods, although sensitive, lack specificity. The poor specificity of autoimmune testing produces more false positive results than true positive results. False positive results can cause stress to patients without autoimmune disease and require unnecessary rheumatology consultation to rule out disease. Our objective was to evaluate two screening assays to reduce the number of false positives while maintaining high sensitivity. In this study, we evaluated two immunoassays, the AtheNA Multi-Lyte II ANA System and QUANTA Lite ANA ELISA, to screen patients for SLE. All positive screening results were compared to immunoflourescent ANA testing using theHEp-2000 ANA System. A chart review was performed on all patients tested to determine clinical diagnosis of SLE. The QuantaLite ANA ELISA produced significantly more false positive results than the AtheNA Multi-Lyte II Test System when screening for SLE in our patient population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Neutrino interaction events in the detector are visually represented with a web-based tool called Arachne. Data are retrieved from a central server via AJAX, and client-side JavaScript draws images into the user''s browser window using the draft HTML 5 standard. These technologies allow neutrino interactions to be viewed by anyone with a web browser, allowing for easy hand-scanning of particle interactions. Arachne has been used in to evaluate neutrino data in a prototype detector, to tune reconstruction algorithms, and for public outreach and education. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
