The design of decoding algorithms is a significant technological component in the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers. Often design of quantum decoders is inspired by classical decoding algorithms, but there are no general principles for building quantum decoders from classical decoders. Given any pair of classical codes, we can build a quantum code using the hypergraph product, yielding a hypergraph product code. Here we show we can also lift the decoders for these classical codes. That is, given oracle access to a minimum weight decoder for the relevant classical codes, the corresponding $[[n,k,d]]$ quantum code can be efficiently decoded for any error of weight smaller than $(d-1)/2$. The quantum decoder requires only $O(k)$ oracle calls to the classical decoder and $O(n^{2})$ classical resources. The lift and the correctness proof of the decoder have a purely algebraic nature that draws on the discovery of some novel homological invariants of the hypergraph product codespace. While the decoder works perfectly for adversarial errors, that is errors of weight up to half the code distance, it is not suitable for more realistic stochastic noise models and therefore can not be used to establish an error correcting threshold. Quantum codes typically rely on large numbers of degrees of freedom to achieve low error rates. However each additional degree of freedom introduces a new set of error mechanisms. Hence minimizing the degrees of freedom that a quantum code utilizes is helpful. One quantum error correction solution is to encode quantum information into one or more bosonic modes. We revisit rotation-invariant bosonic codes, which are supported on Fock states that are gapped by an integer $g$ apart, and the gap $g$ imparts number shift resilience to these codes. Intuitively, since phase operators and number shift operators do not commute, one expects a trade-off between resilience to number-shift and rotation errors. Here, we obtain results pertaining to the non-existence of approximate quantum error correcting $g$ -gapped single-mode bosonic codes with respect to Gaussian dephasing errors. We show that by using arbitrarily many modes, $g$ -gapped multi-mode codes can yield good approximate quantum error correction codes for any finite magnitude of Gaussian dephasing and amplitude damping errors. Electrical scanning probe microscopies (SPM) use ultrasharp metallic tips to obtain nanometer spatial resolution and are a key tool for characterizing nanoscale semiconducting materials and systems. However, these tips are not passive probes; their high work functions can induce local band bending whose effects depend sensitively on the local geometry and material properties and thus are inherently difficult to quantify. We use sequential finite element simulations to first explore the magnitude and spatial distribution of charge reorganization due to tip-induced band bending (TIBB) for planar and nanostructured geometries. We demonstrate that tip-induced depletion and accumulation of carriers can be significantly modified in confined geometries such as nanowires compared to a bulk planar response. This charge reorganization is due to finite size effects that arise as the nanostructure size approaches the Debye length, with significant implications for a range of SPM techniques. We then use the reorganized charge distribution from our model to describe experimentally measured quantities, using in operando scanning microwave impedance microscopy measurements on axial p-i-n silicon nanowire devices as a specific example. By incorporating TIBB, we reveal that our experimentally observed enhancement (absence) of contrast at the p-i (i-n) junction is explained by the tip-induced accumulation (depletion) of carriers at the interface. Our results demonstrate that the inclusion of TIBB is critical for an accurate interpretation of electrical SPM measurements, and is especially important for weakly screening or low-doped materials, as well as the complex doping patterns and confined geometries commonly encountered in nanoscale systems. Anxieties over the potential impacts of climate change, often framed in apocalyptic language, are having a profound, but little studied effect on the contemporary Western urbanscape. This article examines the ways in which current theorizations of 'ecological gentrification' express only half the process, describing how green space is used for social control, but not how ecology is used as a justification regime for such projects. As urbanites seek out housing and living practices that have a lower environmental impact, urban planners have responded by providing large‐scale regeneration of the urbanscape. With the demand for this housing increasing, questions of inequality, displacement and dispossession arise. I ask whether apocalyptic anxiety is being enrolled in the justification regimes of these projects to make them hard to resist at the planning and implementation stages. The article shows that, in capitalizing on collective anxiety surrounding an apocalyptic future, these projects depoliticize subjects by using the empty signifier, 'Sustainability', leading them into an immuno‐political relationship to the urbanscape. This leaves subjects feeling protected from both responsibility for, and the impacts of, climate change. Ultimately, this has the consequence of gentrification coupled with potentially worsening consumptive practices, rebound effects and the depoliticization of the environmentally conscious urbanite. Research at the intersection of machine learning, programming languages, and software engineering has recently taken important steps in proposing learnable probabilistic models of source code that exploit the abundance of patterns of code. In this article, we survey this work. We contrast programming languages against natural languages and discuss how these similarities and differences drive the design of probabilistic models. We present a taxonomy based on the underlying design principles of eachmodel and use it to navigate the literature. The development of a framework for quantifying 'non-stabilizerness' of quantum operations is motivated by the magic state model of fault-tolerant quantum computation and by the need to estimate classical simulation cost for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. The robustness of magic was recently proposed as a well-behaved magic monotone for multi-qubit states and quantifies the simulation overhead of circuits composed of Clifford + T gates, or circuits using other gates from the Clifford hierarchy. Here we present a general theory of the 'non-stabilizerness' of quantum operations rather than states, which are useful for classical simulation of more general circuits. We introduce two magic monotones, called channel robustness and magic capacity, which are welldefined for general n-qubit channels and treat all stabilizer-preserving CPTP maps as free operations. We present two complementary Monte Carlotype classical simulation algorithms with sample complexity given by these quantities and provide examples of channels where the complexity of our algorithms is exponentially better than previously known simulators. We report the use of infrared (IR) scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) as a nondestructive method to map free-carriers in axially modulation-doped silicon nanowires (SiNWs) with nanoscale spatial resolution. Using this technique, we can detect local changes in the electrically active doping concentration based on the infrared free-carrier response in SiNWs grown using the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method. We demonstrate that IR s-SNOM is sensitive to both p-type and n-type free-carriers for carrier densities above ~1 × 1019 cm-3. We also resolve subtle changes in local conductivity properties, which can be correlated with growth conditions and surface effects. The use of s-SNOM is especially valuable in low mobility materials such as boron-doped p-type SiNWs, where optimization of growth has been difficult to achieve due to the lack of information on dopant distribution and junction properties. s-SNOM can be widely employed for the nondestructive characterization of nanostructured material synthesis and local electronic properties without the need for contacts or inert atmosphere. Testing involves examining the behaviour of a system in order to discover potential faults. Given an input for a system, the challenge of distinguishing the corresponding desired, correct behaviour from potentially incorrect behavior is called the “test oracle problem”. Test oracle automation is important to remove a current bottleneck that inhibits greater overall test automation. Without test oracle automation, the human has to determine whether observed behaviour is correct. The literature on test oracles has introduced techniques for oracle automation, including modelling, specifications, contract-driven development and metamorphic testing. When none of these is completely adequate, the final source of test oracle information remains the human, who may be aware of informal specifications, expectations, norms and domain specific information that provide informal oracle guidance. All forms of test oracles, even the humble human, involve challenges of reducing cost and increasing benefit. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of current approaches to the test oracle problem and an analysis of trends in this important area of software testing research and practice. Error-correcting codes protect quantum information and form the basis of fault-tolerant quantum computing. Leading proposals for fault-tolerant quantum computation require codes with an exceedingly rare property, a transversal non-Clifford gate. Codes with the desired property are presented for d-level qudit systems with prime d. The codes use n = d - 1 qudits and can detect up to ~d/ 3 errors. We quantify the performance of these codes for one approach to quantum computation known as magic-state distillation. Unlike prior work, we find performance is always enhanced by increasing d. Magic state distillation (MSD) is a purification protocol that plays an important role in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Repeated iteration of the steps of an MSD protocol generates pure single non-stabilizer states, or magic states, from multiple copies of a mixed resource state using stabilizer operations only. Thus mixed resource states promote the stabilizer operations to full universality. MSD was introduced for qubit-based quantum computation, but little has been known concerning MSD in higher-dimensional qudit-based computation. Here, we describe a general approach for studying MSD in higher dimensions. We use it to investigate the features of a qutrit MSD protocol based on the five-qutrit stabilizer code.We show that this protocol distils non-stabilizer magic states, and identify two types of states that are attractors of this iteration map. Finally, we show how these states may be converted, via stabilizer circuits alone, into a state suitable for state-injected implementation of a non-Clifford phase gate, enabling non-Clifford unitary computation. Distillation of entanglement using only Gaussian operations is an important primitive in quantum communication, quantum repeater architectures, and distributed quantum computing. Existing distillation protocols for continuous degrees of freedom are only known to converge to a Gaussian state when measurements yield precisely the vacuum outcome. In sharp contrast, non-Gaussian states can be deterministically converted into Gaussian states while preserving their second moments, albeit by usually reducing their degree of entanglement. In this work--based on a novel instance of a noncommutative central limit theorem--we introduce a picture general enough to encompass the known protocols leading to Gaussian states, and new classes of protocols including multipartite distillation. Bacterial toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems typically consist of a small, labile antitoxin that inactivates a specific longer-lived toxin. In Escherichia coli, such antitoxins are proteolytically regulated by the ATP-dependent proteases Lon and ClpP. Under normal conditions, antitoxin synthesis is sufficient to replace this loss from proteolysis, and the bacterium remains protected from the toxin. However, if TA production is interrupted, antitoxin levels decrease, and the cognate toxin is free to inhibit the specific cellular component, such as mRNA, DnaB, or gyrase. To date, antitoxin degradation has been studied only in E. coli, so it remains unclear whether similar mechanisms of regulation exist in other organisms. To address this, we followed antitoxin levels over time for the three known TA systems of the major human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, mazEF, axe1-txe1, and axe2-txe2. We observed that the antitoxins of these systems, MazEsa, Axe1, and Axe2, respectively, were all degraded rapidly (half-life [t1/2], ∼18 min) at rates notably higher than those of their E. coli counterparts, such as MazE (t1/2, ∼30 to 60 min). Furthermore, when S. aureus strains deficient for various proteolytic systems were examined for changes in the half-lives of these antitoxins, only strains with clpC or clpP deletions showed increased stability of the molecules. Distillation protocols enable generation of high quality entanglement even in the presence of noise. Existing protocols ignore the presence of local information in mixed states produced from some noise sources such as photon loss, amplitude damping or thermalization. We propose new protocols that exploit local information in mixed states. Our protocols converge to higher fidelities in fewer rounds, and when local information is significant one of our protocols consistently improves yields by 10 fold or more. We demonstrate that our protocols can be compacted into an entanglement-pumping scheme, allowing quantum computation in distributed systems with a few qubits per location. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review provides a gentle introduction to one-way quantum computing in distributed architectures. One-way quantum computation shows significant promise as a computational model for distributed systems, particularly those architectures which rely on probabilistic entangling operations. Introduction. Several methods for hepatic parenchymal division exist. The primary aim was to assess differences in postoperative bile leaks, operative blood loss, and margin status between three transection methods: crush/clamp (CC), stapler (SP), or dissecting sealer (DS). Methods. A single institution, retrospective cohort study was performed on data collected over a three-year period in patients undergoing elective liver resection using the CC, SP, or DS. Patients were excluded if multiple methods of transection were used or for intraoperative death. The association of bile leak with transection type was assessed. A logistic regression model was tested to assess if blood loss was associated with the covariates of transection method, use of portal inflow occlusion, extent of liver resection, and other concurrent major operations. Results. Analyses included 141 patients. The stapler method was quicker than the other methods (p=0.01). The risk of postoperative bile leak was no different between CC, SP, and DS transection methods (p=0.23). There was no difference in mean blood loss or transfusions; however, hepatectomies performed with DS were associated with an increased risk of blood loss ≥1000 mL compared to CC (p=0.04). There were no differences in mean surgical margin between the three methods. Conclusion. The risk of bile leaks was not different between the three methods. While mean blood loss was similar, hepatectomy performed with the DS was associated with an increased risk of having operative blood loss ≥1000 mL compared to CC. Margins were equal by all methods. Abstract: Two coelacanth species, Latimeria chalumnae and Latimeria menadoensis, the recently discovered second species, have a key evolutionary position at the divergence of bony fishes and tetrapods. Together with lungfishes, they are the only living species separating the species-rich tetrapods from the other major group of vertebrates, the ray-finned fishes. The coelacanth is therefore of great importance for comparisons of gene families that differ between these two groups, such as the neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptor family. In this work we have sequenced the full-length genes for two NPY receptors in Latimeria chalumnae. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the two sequences are orthologs of the mammalian Y5 and Y6 receptors. The Y5 gene has been implicated in appetite stimulation in mammals but is absent from teleost fishes. The presence of the Y5 receptor in Latimeria together with phylogenetic analysis shows that Y5 existed before the separation of bony fishes and tetrapods. The Latimeria receptor has about 62 % identity to tetrapod Y5 sequences and contains the extended third intracellular loop with several highly conserved motifs that may be involved in signal transduction. The Latimeria Y6 receptor has about 60% identity to tetrapod Y6 sequences. The functional role of Y6 is unclear as the gene is seemingly functional in some mammals but is non-functional in others. The Y6 receptor is also missing in teleost fishes. Our results confirm an early vertebrate origin for all NPY receptor subtypes presently found in mammals followed by differential gene loss in the different classes of vertebrates. Abstract: We report the cloning and pharmacological characterization of two neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptor subtypes, Y2 and Y7, in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). These subtypes are approximately 50% identical to each other and belong to the Y2 subfamily of NPY receptors. The binding properties of the receptors were investigated after expression in human HEK-293 EBNA cells. Both receptors bound the three zebrafish peptides NPY, PYYa, and PYYb, as well as porcine NPY and PYY, with affinities in the nanomolar range that are similar to mammalian Y2. The affinity of the truncated porcine NPY fragments, NPY 13–36 and NPY 18–36 was markedly lower compared to mammalian and chicken Y2. This suggests that mammalian and chicken Y2 are unique among NPY receptors in their ability to bind truncated peptide fragments. The antagonist BIIE0246, developed for mammalian Y2, did not bind either of the two rainbow trout receptors. Our results support the proposed expansion of this gene family by duplications before the gnathostome radiation. They also reveal appreciable differences in the repertoire and characteristics of NPY receptors between fish and tetrapods stressing the importance of lineage-specific gene loss as well as sequence divergence after duplication. Abstract: Agonistic interactions are present throughout the animal kingdom as well as in humans. In this report, we present a model system to study neurological correlates of dominant–subordinate relationships. Zebrafish, Danio rerio, has been used as a model system for developmental biology for decades. We propose here that it is also an excellent model for studying social behavior. Adult male zebrafish were separated for 5 days and then pairs were formed and allowed to interact for 5 days. Under these conditions, aggression is prevalent and dominant–subordinate relationships are quickly established. Dominant behavior is characterized by a repeated pattern of chasing and biting, whereas subordinates engage in retreats. By day 5, the dominant–subordinate relationship was firmly established and there were differences in behavior over time. Chases, bites and retreats were all less frequent on day 5 of the social interaction than on day 1. Arginine vasotocin is the teleostean homologue of arginine vasopressin, a neuropeptide whose expression has been linked to aggression and social position in mammals. Immunohistochemistry indicated differences in vasotocin staining between dominant and subordinate individuals. Dominant individuals express vasotocin in one to three pairs of large cells in the magnocellular preoptic area whereas subordinate individuals express vasotocin in 7–11 pairs of small cells in the parvocellular preoptic area. These results suggest that the vasotocinergic system may play a role in shaping dominant–subordinate relationships and agonistic behavior in this model organism. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to clarify to what extent the effects of elevated dietary L-tryptophan (Trp) on aggressive behavior and stress responsiveness in rainbow trout are mediated by circulating melatonin and central serotonin (5-HT), respectively. Isolated rainbow trout were paired for 1 h a day for 7 days in order to create fish with experience of being dominant and subordinate. Following this week, the fish were tested for aggressive behavior using a resident–intruder test after which they were subjected to one of four treatments: (1) tryptophan, (2) the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram, (3) melatonin, and (4) no treatment (controls). After 7 days of treatment, the fish were subjected to a second resident–intruder test. Trp-supplemented feed resulted in a suppression of aggressive behavior in fish with experience of being dominant. Moreover, fish fed Trp-supplemented feed, regardless of social experience, also displayed lower plasma cortisol levels than controls. These effects of elevated dietary Trp were closely mimicked by citalopram treatment, whereas exogenous melatonin had no effect on either aggressive behavior or plasma cortisol. Thus, the effect of elevated dietary Trp on aggressive behavior and stress responses does not appear to be mediated by melatonin even though elevated dietary intake of Trp resulted in an increase in plasma melatonin concentrations. The present experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that elevated dietary levels ofl-tryptophan (Trp) result in elevated plasma levels of melatonin and that this increase in plasma melatonin concentration is caused by elevated melatonin production and secretion by the gastro-intestinal-tract (GIT). Feeding juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Trp-supplemented feed for 7 days resulted in elevated daytime plasma levels of melatonin and reduced poststress plasma cortisol concentrations. Nighttime plasma melatonin concentrations were, however, not affected by elevated dietary Trp. Moreover, stress caused a reduction in daytime plasma levels of melatonin in fish fed Trp-supplemented feed, an effect that was counteracted by treatment with anα-receptor antagonist. These results clearly suggest that elevated dietary intake of Trp results in an increase in the GIT production of melatonin in rainbow trout. A suggestion that was further supported by the results from an in vitro experiment demonstrating that addition of Trp to the incubation medium stimulates melatonin production and release by incubated rainbow trout GIT. The results from this study led us to suggest a possible mechanism for melatonin in mediating the effects of elevated dietary Trp on poststress plasma cortisol concentrations and aggressive behavior in rainbow trout. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) gene orf-A, also designated orf-2, encodes a 77 amino acid accessory protein reported to be critical for efficient viral replication in vitro and in vivo and previously implicated to encode a Tat protein for FIV. However, recent studies have shown Orf-A to be important in the late steps of the FIV life cycle involved in virion formation and in early steps involved in virus infectivity (J. Virol. 77 (2003) 8819). The present study reports that expression of a GFP-Orf-A fusion protein in both primate and feline cell lines results in nuclear localization of this FIV accessory protein. Moreover, a nuclear localization signal (NLS) critical for nuclear import was mapped to amino acid residues 43 through 53 of Orf-A. Lastly, transient expression of GFP-Orf-A in cells induced an arrest at the second gap (G2) of the cell cycle. Our findings reveal that Orf-A is a nuclear protein that expresses properties similar to those reported for human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1)-encoded Vpr. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Several retroviruses downmodulate the cell surface expression of envelope (Env) proteins through peptide sequences located in the cytoplasmic tail of the transmembrane (TM) subunit. We investigated whether cell surface expression of a chimeric protein containing the cytoplasmic domain of the TM protein (CTM) of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) was regulated by two membrane-proximal dileucine motifs or by tyrosine Y487 or Y498 in YXXL motifs. A chimeric protein composed of the extracellular and membrane-spanning portions of human CD8-α plus a wild-type (wt) BLV CTM was detectable on the surface of only 40% of the cells in which it was transiently expressed. Replacement of either dileucine pair with alanines increased the level of surface display of chimeric proteins. Nearly all cells became surface positive when both dileucine motifs were altered simultaneously and when either an N-terminal segment containing both dileucine motifs or a C-terminal segment containing all YXXL motifs was deleted. In contrast, replacement of Y487 or Y498 with alanine or phenylalanine enabled only small increases in surface display compared with wt levels. Chimeric proteins had similar stabilities but were downmodulated from the cell surface at three different rates. Point mutants segregated into each of the three groups of proteins categorized according to these different rates. Interestingly, Y487 mutants were downmodulated less efficiently than Y498 mutants, which behaved like wt. CD8-CTM chimeric proteins were phosphorylated on serine residues, but the native BLV Env protein was not phosphorylated either in transfected cells or in a lymphoid cell line constitutively producing BLV. Thus, both dileucine and YXXL motifs within the BLV CTM contribute to downmodulation of a protein containing this domain. In salmonid fishes there are indications that socially subordinate individuals avoid competition with larger, dominant fish by adjusting daily feeding and activity cycles. As in other vertebrates, the pineal organ and its hormone melatonin act as synchronizers of daily rhythms to the external light/dark cycle in salmonids. Social defeat may act as a potent stressor; inducing elevated glucocorticoid secretion and a general behavioral inhibition. Here, we show that social stress also affects circulating melatonin levels in rainbow trout, a species known to display strong dominance hierarchies both in the wild and under captive rearing. Subordinate individuals had significantly higher nighttime melatonin levels than dominant fish or controls. There was no effect of social rank on the much lower melatonin levels observed in animals sampled during the day. Correlations between circulating glucocorticoids and melatonin depended on circadian cycles as well as social context. This study suggests that altered melatonin production contributes to the physiological and behavioral profile of subordinate animals. Social status, and other determinants of the stress level of experimental animals, therefore should be taken into consideration as potential factors influencing the results from in vivo research on this hormone. The influence of thin (10–50 nm) chromate conversion coatings (CCC) on the corrosion performance of Ni–P-based alloys in 0.5 M H2SO4 was investigated by using potentiodynamic sweeping techniques. Thin CCC films can improve the corrosion resistance of Ni–P alloys to a significant extent. On the contrary, the improvement in the corrosion resistance of Ni–W–P and Ni–Mo–P coatings is minimal, due to a poor kinetics of formation of the chromate coatings in the latter alloys. Dichromate concentration, solution pH and immersion time all have a significant effect on the corrosion resistance of Ni–P, while solution temperature influences corrosion resistance only to a very limited extent. Chromated Ni–P exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with respect to untreated Ni–P; this effect is intrinsic and attributed to a change in electronic structure of the alloy. The observed trends in corrosion resistance were interpreted in terms of the thickness and coverage of the chromate layers, as ascertained by use of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The orf-A (orf-2) gene of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a small open reading frame predicted to encode a 77-amino-acid protein that contains putative domains similar to those of the ungulate lentiviral Tat protein. Orf-A is reported to be critical for efficient viral replication in vitro and in vivo. A series of FIVpPPR-derived proviruses with in-frame deletions and point mutations within orf-d were constructed and tested for replication in feline lymphoid cells. Orf-A mutant proviruses were also tested for viral gene and protein expression, viral particle formation, and virion infectivity. Deletions within orf-A severely restricted FIV replication in feline peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and interleukin-2-dependent T-cell lines. In addition, substitutions of alanines for leucines in the putative leucine-rich domain, for cysteines in the putative cysteine-rich domain, and for a tryptophan at position 43 in Orf-A restricted the replication of FIV mutants. Deletions and point mutations in orf-A imposed a small effect or no effect on FIV long-terminal-repeat-driven viral gene expression and had no effect on viral protein expression. However, release of cell-free, virionassociated viral RNA in supernatants from cells transfected with orf-A mutant proviruses was severely restricted but was rescued by cotransfection with a wild-type Orf-A expression vector. In addition, virions derived from orf-A mutant proviruses expressed reduced infectivity for feline PBMC. Our findings suggest that Orf-A functions involve multiple steps of the FIV life cycle including both virion formation and infectivity. Furthermore, these observations suggest that Orf-A represents an FIV-encoded analog more similar to the accessory gene vpr, vpu, or nef than to the regulatory gene tat encoded by the primate lentiviruses. This work describes the isolation and pharmacological characterization of a neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptor from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The receptor exhibits approximately 45% amino acid sequence identity to mammalian Y1-subfamily receptors, Y1, Y4 and y6, a similar degree of identity as these subtypes display to one another. Because it displays highest sequence identity to zebrafish Yb (75%), we named it the trout Yb receptor. The receptor exhibits high binding affinity for zebrafish and human NPY and peptide YY (PYY) but not truncated forms of the peptides. Human pancreatic polypeptide (PP) also binds with high affinity. Y1 selective antagonists exhibit poor binding as is the case for Y2 and Y5 selective ligands. This binding profile supports membership in the Y1 subfamily. Sequence data also support this relationship suggesting that Yb is a fourth and separate member of the Y1 subfamily. NPY has a number of important physiological functions such as regulating food intake and reproduction. The expression of the receptor in the hypothalamus and telencephalon suggests a possible role in these processes. This and other receptors from this species have potential for improving aquaculture. Monoamine neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin) play an important role in reproduction and sexual behavior throughout the vertebrates. They are the first endogenous chemical signals in the regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. In teleosts with behavioral sex determination, much is known about behavioral cues that induce sex reversal. The cues are social, processed via the visual system and depend on the ratio of females to males in the population. The mechanisms by which these external behavioral cues are converted to an internal chemical regulatory process are largely unknown. The protogynous Hawaiian saddleback wrasse, Thalassoma duperrey, was used to investigate the biological pathway mediating the conversion of a social cue into neuroendocrine events regulating sex reversal. Because monoamines play an important role in the regulation of the HPG axis, they were selected as likely candidates for such a conversion. To determine if monoamines could affect sex reversal, drugs affecting monoamines were used in an attempt to either induce sex reversal under non-permissive conditions, or prevent sex reversal under permissive conditions. Increasing norepinephrine or blocking dopamine or serotonin lead to sex reversal in experimental animals under non-permissive conditions. Increasing serotonin blocked sex reversal under permissive conditions, while blocking dopamine or norepinephrine retarded the process. The results presented here demonstrate that monoamines contribute significantly to the control sex reversal. Norepinephrine stimulates initiation and completion of gonadal sex of reversal as well as color change perhaps directly via its effects on the HPG axis. Dopamine exercises inhibitory action on the initiation of sex reversal while 5-HT inhibits both initiation and completion of sex reversal. The serotonergic system appears to be an integral part of the pathway mediating the conversion of a social cue into a neuroendocrine event. The complex organization of neurochemical events controlling the psychosocial, physiological, and anatomical events that constitute reversal of sexual identity includes monoamine neurotransmitters. The present study makes a start on characterising the cognitive processes by which physical effects of eating on the senses are transformed into quantitative judgments about perceived characteristics of a food. It was hypothesised that there is a discrete perceptual channel for an aspect of texture sensed during each of the three initial movements of eating a piece of a cookie. The results showed that the force required for initial compression of the surface of the biscuit related to how ‘crisp’ it was. Scores on ‘hard’ were sensitive to higher forces being required to bite off a piece. Ratings of crunchiness responded to both amplitude and frequency of the cracks opened up in this heterogeneously structured material during the first crushing of the bitten piece. These findings are being pursued to identify the stimulation patterns more precisely and to measure how the percepts are integrated into judgments of overall texture. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study provides a comprehensive summary of the findings regarding the application and diagnostic efficacy of droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) in detecting viral and bacterial pathogens in aquaculture. Utilizing a systematic search of four databases up to 6 November 2023, we identified studies where ddPCR was deployed for pathogen detection in aquaculture settings, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐analysis of Diagnostic Test Accuracy guidelines. From the collected data, 16 studies retrieved, seven were included in a meta‐analysis, encompassing 1121 biological samples from various fish species. The detection limits reported ranged markedly from 0.07 to 34 copies/μL. A direct comparison of the diagnostic performance between ddPCR with quantitative PCR (qPCR) proved challenging due to limited data, thus only a pooled sensitivity analysis was feasible. The results showed a pooled sensitivity of 0.750 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.487–0.944) for ddPCR, compared to 0.461 (95% CI: 0.294–0.632) for qPCR, with no statistically significant difference in sensitivity between the two methods (p =.5884). Notably, significant heterogeneity was observed among the studies (I2 = 93%–97%, p <.01), with the year of publication significantly influencing this heterogeneity (p <.001), but not the country of origin (p =.49). No publication bias was detected, and the studies generally exhibited a low risk of bias according to QUADAS‐C criteria. While ddPCR and qPCR showed comparable sensitivities in pathogen detection, ddPCR's capability to precisely quantify pathogens without the need for standard curves highlights its potential utility. For certain restricted computational tasks, quantum mechanics provides a provable advantage over any possible classical implementation. Several of these results have been proven using the framework of measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC), where nonlocality and more generally contextuality have been identified as necessary resources for certain quantum computations. Here, we consider the computational power of MBQC in more detail by refining its resource requirements, both on the allowed operations and the number of accessible qubits. More precisely, we identify which Boolean functions can be computed in non-adaptive MBQC, with local operations contained within a finite level in the Clifford hierarchy. Moreover, for non-adaptive MBQC restricted to certain subtheories such as stabiliser MBQC, we compute the minimal number of qubits required to compute a given Boolean function. Our results point towards hierarchies of resources that more sharply characterise the power of MBQC beyond the binary of contextuality vs non-contextuality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Malware concealment is the predominant strategy for malware propagation. Black hats create variants of malware based on polymorphism and metamorphism. Malware variants, by definition, share some information. Although the concealment strategy alters this information, there are still patterns on the software. Given a zoo of labelled malware and benign-ware, we ask whether a suspect program is more similar to our malware or to our benign-ware. Normalized Compression Distance (NCD) is a generic metric that measures the shared information content of two strings. This measure opens a new front in the malware arms race, one where the countermeasures promise to be more costly for malware writers, who must now obfuscate patterns as strings qua strings, without reference to execution, in their variants. Our approach classifies disk-resident malware with 97.4% accuracy and a false positive rate of 3%. We demonstrate that its accuracy can be improved by combining NCD with the compressibility rates of executables using decision forests, paving the way for future improvements. We demonstrate that malware reported within a narrow time frame of a few days is more homogeneous than malware reported over two years, but that our method still classifies the latter with 95.2% accuracy and a 5% false positive rate. Due to its use of compression, the time and computation cost of our method is nontrivial. We show that simple approximation techniques can improve its running time by up to 63%. We compare our results to the results of applying the 59 anti-malware programs used on the VirusTotal website to our malware. Spanish Colonial Period brick samples dating to the 19th century from the Municipalities of Liliw and Pagsanjan in Laguna, Philippines was investigated. These samples were obtained from two church structures, a church bell tower from Liliw and a church convent from Pagsanjan. Combined X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy allowed the determination of chemical elements and minerals attributed to clay and sand, such as montmorillonite, quartz, corundum, hematite and calcite. On the basis of these compositions, the possible kilning conditions employed to fire the bricks during manufacture was also proposed. MATLAB™ programme was utilised in this study to interpret the data from XRD and FTIR to rationalise the overlapping peaks in the spectrum. Results show that both brick samples were made of clay material that is non-calcareous with low refractory. The firing was performed in an oxidising atmosphere or an open-air environment at an estimated temperature of between 650°C and 850°C. This preliminary study provides a baseline chemical characterisation data of colonial period bricks in the Philippines which will be useful for future conservation and restoration work not only locally but also within the Southeast Asian region. Introduction: Financial constraints are one of the biggest barriers for women of low-income countries to receive necessary reproductive health services. Educating women about the importance of saving money has been incorporated as a component of antenatal care (ANC) contacts, but little is known whether ANC contacts influence women's saving. Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted on data from a cross-sectional household survey study of 1109 women who recently gave birth in two rural districts of Zambia. Results: Receiving ANC contacts early and often and discussing saving money during ANC were associated with saving money for the mother's birth, but not with saving enough money for the most recent birth. Discussion: Continued effort is needed to encourage women to attend ANC contacts earlier and more frequently. Additionally, the importance of saving money for birth should be discussed during ANC contacts. The leading paradigm for performing a computation on quantum memories can be encapsulated as distill-then-synthesize. Initially, one performs several rounds of distillation to create high-fidelity magic states that provide one good T gate, an essential quantum logic gate. Subsequently, gate synthesis intersperses many T gates with Clifford gates to realize a desired circuit. We introduce a unified framework that implements one round of distillation and multiquibit gate synthesis in a single step. Typically, our method uses the same number of T gates as conventional synthesis but with the added benefit of quadratic error suppression. A new phased array of microphones, suitable for the harsh environment of a rocket launch, was built and tested during a static firing of an RS-25 engine. It uses 70 piezo-resistive, dynamic pressure sensors, optimally distributed on a 10.5-ft diameter open frame dome structure and has a 200-ft long cable bundle to carry the signals to a weather-protected cabinet containing the data systems. The test stand was imaged using an infra-red camera and a visible wavelength camera, and the beamformed noise maps were superimposed on the photographs. The first-time data from a full-scale engine test stand showed that the plume deflector at the bottom of the engine was the primary noise source. The openings of the test stand around the nozzle exit were also found to be noise sources particularly at higher frequencies. Active error decoding and correction of topological quantum codes--in particular the toric code-- remains one of the most viable routes to large scale quantum information processing. In contrast, passive error correction relies on the natural physical dynamics of a system to protect encoded quantum information. However, the search is ongoing for a completely satisfactory passive scheme applicable to locally interacting two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate dynamical decoders that provide passive error correction by embedding the decoding process into local dynamics. We propose a specific discrete time cellular-automaton decoder in the fault tolerant setting and provide numerical evidence showing that the logical qubit has a survival time extended by several orders of magnitude over that of a bare unencoded qubit. We stress that (asynchronous) dynamical decoding gives rise to a Markovian dissipative process. We hence equate cellular-automaton decoding to a fully dissipative topological quantum memory, which removes errors continuously. In this sense, uncontrolled and unwanted local noise can be corrected for by a controlled local dissipative process.
