Ecosystems worldwide are being disrupted under increased pressure from human activities. Nevertheless, most conservation studies and restoration efforts have so far focused on ecosystems of high heritage value related to their species diversity and/or the rarity of their habitats and/or species. However, "ordinary nature" (all the everyday, non-spectacular and non-protected landscapes, species and ecosystems) is also threatened by ecosystem disruption, which could affect major ecological functions and thus the supply of ecosystem services (ES). Conventional farming systems, which are mostly composed of agroecosystems characterised by ordinary nature, are already known to deliver some ES (e.g. pollination, carbon sequestration). Nevertheless, no systematic search has been done yet to determine which ES are identified and how there are studied in these conventional farming systems. We thus performed a first systematic evidence map (review of key articles to show, at a glance, the points that have been most studied, and highlight key gaps in the evidence base) to identify characterisation and measurement of ES provided by conventional agroecosystems from the review of 189 key international scientific articles. We excluded production for economic benefit, as this topic is already well documented in conventional agriculture systems. We found that most studies identified nutrient cycling (49.7%), carbon sequestration (46.6%), pest reduction (48.1%) or pollination (36.5%) as ES supplied by conventional agroecosystems. Correlations were also found between spatial scale and ES studied: for example, carbon storage was determined more at agricultural plot scale, while cultural services were determined more at landscape level. Our map also yielded 74 frequently used ES indicators, 50 of which are easily measurable and operational indicators of significant ES. Afterwards, one challenge that could be addressed in further studies is to determine for each indicator the range of measurement values that should be considered positive for ES provision, which is likely ecosystem-dependent. Interactions are key drivers of the functioning and fate of plant communities. A traditional way to measure them is to use pairwise experiments, but such experiments do not scale up to species‐rich communities. For those, using association networks based on spatial patterns may provide a more realistic approach. While this method has been successful in abiotically‐stressed environments (alpine and arid ecosystems), it is unclear how well it generalizes to other types of environments. We help fill this knowledge gap by documenting how the structure of plant communities changes in a Mediterranean dry grassland grazed by sheep using plant spatial association networks. We investigated how the structure of these networks changed with grazing intensity to show the effect of biotic disturbance on community structure. We found that these grazed grassland communities were mostly dominated by negative associations, suggesting a dominance of interference over facilitation regardless of the disturbance level. The topology of the networks revealed that the number of associations were not evenly‐distributed across species, but rather that a small subset of species established most negative associations under low grazing conditions. All these aspects of spatial organization vanished under high level of grazing as association networks became more similar to null expectations. Our study shows that grazed herbaceous plant communities display a highly non‐random organization that responds strongly to disturbance and can be measured through association networks. This approach thus appears insightful to test general hypotheses about plant communities, and in particular understand how anthropogenic perturbations affect the organization of ecological communities. Aims: We assessed what the effects of fire and grazing are on vegetative growth and sexual reproduction of Brachypodium retusum, the dominant species of Mediterranean Thero‐Brachypodietea grasslands ("steppes") and on species composition of the associated plant community. Location: "La Crau", southeastern France. Methods: We set up a split‐plot experiment testing the effects of fire season (winter, summer) and grazing on plant cover, inflorescence number, seed set and germination of Brachypodium retusum in traditionally grazed grasslands. We further analyzed plant species composition and diversity in vegetation relevés. The same fire treatments were tested in a second experiment in long‐term grazing exclosures. Results: Brachypodium retusum showed a rapid post‐fire recovery, but other species of the associated plant community, in particular annuals, recovered as fast or even faster. Fire increased Brachypodium retusum inflorescence production and seed set per inflorescence and this effect was stronger in the summer fire treatment. At the community level, fire significantly increased species richness, evenness and Bray–Curtis dissimilarity in the second post‐fire season and again, the summer fire effect was stronger. Grazing exclusion for two seasons had only a small effect on Brachypodium retusum and the associated plant community. The effect of both fire treatments on Brachypodium retusum was similar in long‐term exclosures. In these exclosures, fire resulted in a community shift towards the species composition of traditionally grazed steppes. Conclusions: The concomitant positive effects of experimental burning on Brachypodium retusum reproduction and on plant diversity of Mediterranean steppe vegetation suggest that the system is adapted to fire as an important driver of community composition. Annual species surviving as seeds are as successful in post‐fire recovery as perennial resprouters. Prescribed burning may be an alternative strategy to restore community structure in abandoned (ungrazed) steppes showing a decline in typical grassland species after several years of grazing abandonment. Fire had a positive effect on vegetative regeneration and particularly on reproduction of Brachypodium retusum, even though its vegetative recovery is lower than the community average. Fire also increased the species richness and diversity of the associated community. Premise of the Study: Genetic differentiation in plant species may result from adaptation to environmental conditions, but also from stochastic processes. The drivers selecting for local adaptation and the contribution of adaptation to genetic differentiation are often unknown. Restoration and succession studies have revealed different colonization patterns for Brachypodium retusum, a common Mediterranean grass. In order to understand these patterns, we tested population differentiation and adaptation to different environmental factors. Methods: Structured sampling of 12 populations from six sites and two soil types within site was used to analyze the spatial and environmental structure of population differentiation. Sampling sites differ in grazing intensity and climate. We tested germination and growth in a common garden. In subsets, we analyzed the differential response to stone cover, grazing and soil moisture. Key Results: We found significant differences among populations. The site explained population differentiation better than soil, suggesting a dominant influence of climate and/or genetic drift. Stone cover had a positive influence on seedling establishment, and populations showed a differential response. However, this response was not related to environmental differences between collection sites. Regrowth after clipping was higher in populations from the more intensively grazed Red Mediterranean soils suggesting an adaptation to grazing. Final germination was generally high even under drought, but germination response to differences in soil moisture was similar across populations. Conclusions: Adaptive population differentiation in germination and early growth may have contributed to different colonization patterns. The first French ecological offset area was inaugurated on May 11th 2009 at the site of an abandoned orchard in the Crau plain (Bouches-du-Rhône department, France). One of the objectives of this intervention was to test the first French mitigation bank rehabilitating the herbaceous vegetation in order to encourage the return of steppe birds emblematic of this area. The ecologists involved in the local steering committee proposed rehabilitation techniques and assessed their impact on biodiversity while at the same time carrying out experimental research designed to extend the restoration process to plant communities and some groups of insects. The results of various studies showed that the rehabilitation scheme led to the development of a plant community favorable to the return of steppe birds. However, the long-term results of the restoration experiments cannot be definitively predicted. Thus, these results highlight the scientific and technical difficulties facing the restoration process and hence restrict the compensation mechanism to the rehabilitation of some of their components or functions. This paper proposes a model for visual laughter generation by the means of speaker-dependent training of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). It is composed of the following parts: 1) facial and 2) and head motions are modeled with separate HMMs while 3) eye-blink are added as a post-processing step on the generated eyelid trajectories. The models are trained on a database of facial expressions recorded on one male subject watching humorous videos. A commercially available marker-based motion capture system was used to record the visual data. A preliminary study has shown that modeling head motion with the same transcriptions as for facial deformation is not the best choice due to the rigidness of the resulting head motion. Finally, the generated facial laughter trajectories are used to animate a 3D face model and the corresponding animation is rendered in a video. An online perception MOS test is conducted to assess the improvement compared to the previous method and to compare with the perception of ground truth trajectories. Green roofs offer a way to improve ecosystem services in urban areas. In the Mediterranean, specialized companies are still unfamiliar with green roof installation because they consider dry conditions and appropriate plant selection as obstacles. Also in a temperate maritime climate, green roof design and vegetation composition need to be adapted to account for the projected climate changes, including an increase in temperature and more irregular precipitation events. This paper discusses the results of a two-year experiment on unirrigated extensive green roofs which were constructed in both a Mediterranean (Avignon, France) and a temperate maritime climate (Heverlee, Belgium) and on which 18 drought-adapted plants with Mediterranean habitat affinities were tested. Experimental plots differed in solar exposure and substrate type (substrate depth of 5 cm and 5 or 10 cm above a water retention layer). Climatic conditions affected vegetation development in both locations, with fluctuating cover values in the Mediterranean reflecting the impacts of summer droughts and rainy autumn periods. Overall, the deepest substrate depth of 10 cm with a water retention layer resulted in the highest cover and abundance values and the highest species diversity throughout the experiment. Both bryophytes and weeds established spontaneously over the two years, and their importance in terms of biodiversity value is discussed. To improve functional biodiversity of the extensive green roof, we advise to use succulent species together with annuals, perennial herbs and geophytes. The design and species recommendations shed some light on the possibilities for extensive green roof design in regions with summer drought and irregular precipitation and regions facing climate change. Plant functional traits are increasingly used in restoration ecology because they have the potential to guide restoration practices at a broad scale. This article presents a trait-based multi-criteria framework to evaluate and predict the performance of 17 plant seedlings to improve ecological restoration of marly eroded areas in the French Southern Alps. The suitability of these species to limit soil erosion was assessed by studying both their response to erosive forces and their effect on erosion dynamics. We assumed that species efficiency could be explained and predicted from plant traits and we looked for trait-performance relationships. Our results showed that root slenderness ratio, the percentage of fine roots and root system topology, were the three root morphology traits best describing anchorage strength. Root system characterized by a long and thin tap root and many fine lateral ramifications would be the best to resist concentrated runoff. Species response to burial mainly depended on growth form and morphological flexibility. The abilities of species in reinforcing the soil and reducing erosion rates were negatively correlated to root diameter and positively to the percentage of fine roots. Moreover, root system density and root tensile strength also influenced root reinforcement. Finally, the ability to trap sediment was positively correlated to leaf area and canopy density. Species were then scored and classified in four clusters according to their global performance. Abstract: The performance of various speech processing applications may be dramatically affected by an inversion of the speech polarity, which depends upon the recording setup. As a consequence, automatically detecting the speech polarity is a necessary preliminary step to guarantee a correct behaviour of such methods. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First a new approach for polarity determination based on the calculation of higher-order statistical moments is introduced. These moments oscillate at the local fundamental frequency with a phase shift which is dependent on the speech polarity. Secondly, a thorough comparative evaluation between the proposed method and three other state-of-the-art techniques is carried out. Experiments are led on a large amount of data with 10 speech corpora. In addition to an analysis in clean conditions, the robustness of these methods to both an additive noise and to reverberation is also investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel neural network for classification of short-duration heart sounds: the time growing neural network (TGNN). The input to the network is the spectral power in adjacent frequency bands as computed in time windows of growing length. Children with heart systolic ejection click (SEC) and normal children are the two groups subjected to analysis. The performance of the TGNN is compared to that of a time delay neural network (TDNN) and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP), using training and test datasets of similar sizes with a total of 614 normal and abnormal cardiac cycles. From the test dataset, the classification rate/sensitivity is found to be 97.0%/98.1% for the TGNN, 85.1%/76.4% for the TDNN, and 92.7%/85.7% for the MLP. The results show that the TGNN performs better than do TDNN and MLP when frequency band power is used as classifier input. The performance of TGNN is also found to exhibit better immunity to noise. Questions: (i) Can sampling of soil wood charcoals at high spatial resolution produce new evidence concerning the presence of chalk grassland before or during the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages? (ii) Are there correlations between vegetation history and archeological data during these periods at this particular site? Location: The chalk hillsides of Saint-Adrien in the lower Seine Valley, Upper Normandy, northwest France. Methods: The study was carried out at a high spatial resolution in chalk grassland using soil wood charcoal analysis, in which charcoals found in the soil were identified and dated in an area of several hundred square meters. Results: Late-successional woody species (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus sp.) were still present in the study site in an area inconsistent with the existence of large chalk grassland herbaceous plant communities (several hectares) in the Neolithic (6500-3800 BP) and Bronze Age (3800-2700 BP). Conclusions: The presence of late-successional woody species on the studied hillside suggests that fires in the Neolithic were linked to forest clearance for pastoral activities, as already demonstrated for similar ecosystems in eastern France and Germany. Nevertheless, our methodology clearly demonstrates that palaecological studies need to take into account the spatial organisation of plant communities as a complementary element to validate their potential existence in former times. Abstract: The increasing urbanization of rural areas leads to a strong development of horticultural flora, which is the main source of alien and invasive plants. In order to assess the pool of cultivated species under different urbanization pressures, the diversity and distribution of horticultural flora were studied in 120 Mediterranean gardens belonging to three housing density types. The results showed a great richness and heterogeneity of this flora, and similarities in species composition between gardens of the same housing density types. Twenty-four percent of the cultivated species are well adapted to the Mediterranean climate, and 21 species known to be invasive on the French territory have emanated from gardens. Inventorying areas adjoining gardens would be useful in identifying escaped garden plants and to assess the associated risks for biological diversity. The results also suggested a detailed analysis of the influence of social, economic and regional factors on planting practices, in order to identify the drivers of these original floral patterns. Abstract: Since the beginning of the 20th century, the concepts of ecotones, ecoclines and edge effects have been discussed from a theoretical point of view. However, there have been very few experimental tests of these ideas, which are sometimes radically different. This study presents data from field experimental researches and determines the status of transitions between cereal fields and grazed grasslands. Five study sites were chosen in Southern France because they were included in agri-environmental schemes aimed at conserving arable weeds and dry grassland species. In total, 128 quadrats of 1m2 were sampled on replicated transects running through transition zones. There was no significant increase of species-richness but there were changes in the botanical composition from cereal fields to grassland. These experimental results confirmed the opinion of Van der Maarel, E. (1990. Ecotones and ecoclines are different. J. Veg. Sci. 1, 135–138) that an ecotone is poorer in species than the adjacent ecosystems, as only a few species can adapt to the typical environmental factors in this zone. The transition zones studied rather reflected an edge effect than a real ecotone following the definition of Odum, E.P. (1971. Fundamentals of Ecology, 3e éd. W.B. Saunders Company, Philadelphie). In our case, when the transition zone between the two adjacent ecosystems is managed as a “constraint ecotone” following Vanpeene-Bruhier''s, S. (1998. Abstract: Grasslands were once widespread and species-rich ecosystems. They have drastically decreased throughout the world, largely due to changes in land-uses. Remnant grasslands are often highly degraded and disconnected and require active conservation. In order for grasslands to be maintained worldwide, protected areas need to be created. While adequately creating and managing protected areas has proven difficult, this can be improved by following a three-point guideline: (1) consider many ecological groups (birds, insects, plants); (2) use conservation biology knowledge; (3) seek agreements with concerned parties by comprehending elements of economy, politics and sociology. Based on the example of La Crau, a steppe area in South-eastern France, this review aims at (i) illustrating that this guideline can facilitate creating and managing protected areas and (ii) proposing improvement to the guideline while keeping it simple. In La Crau, the need for conservation was first acknowledged in 1975. Between 1983, when a request for a protection decree was made and 1990, when the first concrete protection measure was taken, 20% of the steppe disappeared. It took another 8 years to reach a concerted management plan in 1998. The review shows how using ecological guidelines would have helped better and faster protection of the steppe. Improvements to the guideline drawn from the La Crau experience include: the protection of some traditional practices; the protection of some degraded habitats that can substitute for habitats that no longer exist; the restoration of degraded habitats that do not qualify for protection; and the flexibility of the management plan. Abstract: Some environmental variables and above-ground vegetation, seed rain, ant-borne seeds and seed banks were studied on three abandoned fields, at the margins between these fields and a remnant patch of a native steppe vegetation of a high value for nature and species conservation. While the fields were the same size, were adjacent to the same patch of remnant steppe and were cultivated with the same crop, site-specific environmental variables contributed to 23% of the vegetation patterns; each site was characterised by its unique historical trajectory and thus, by a particular set of species. Distance from boundaries contributed to 10% of the vegetation patterns. Species characterising the surrounding steppe were found close to boundaries; species characterising abandoned fields were found further away. Winter seed banks and summer deep seed bank did not contribute much to either effect and were characterised by species dating back from past cultivation. Conversely, summer surface seed bank greatly contributed to (83%) the differences in species composition between the three fields. Seed rain contributed to differences in species composition between fields (91%) and distance (76%). Ant-borne seeds largely contributed to the differences between fields (87%). The colonisation of steppe species on field margins occurs mainly through seed rain and is very slow and incomplete. In a semi-arid fragmented open-landscape, patches of native vegetation do not play a great role in colonisation processes, and itinerant sheep grazing is insufficient to initiate recovery. In Europe, the actual landscape has been mainly influenced by human activities. Agricultural intensification led to a considerable habitat loss and fragmentation, especially for dry semi-natural grasslands.This current study investigates the impact of former melon and cereal cultivation (cultivation period: 1950–1987) on the semi-natural vegetation of the Crau, representing the last xeric Mediterranean steppe in France.Today, the ex-cultivated melon and cereal fields are characterised by different vegetation compositions, species richness and evenness compared to the undisturbed steppe community. Also the abiotic conditions (N, P, K, pH, soil granule fractions) have been changed by former cultivation practices. The rather transient seed bank of the steppe was depleted during the cultivation periods; ancient weed species and ruderals now determine the seed bank of the ex-cultivated fields.It is concluded that the conservation of the last parts of undisturbed steppe must have absolute priority. A re-development of the original and unique steppe community on formerly cultivated fields may take decades or centuries, if at all. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The calcareous grasslands of the south-western French Alps have been poorly studied, although they provide suitable habitat for rare plant species and communities. The separate and combined effects on calcareous grassland communities of habitat conditions (lithology, soil moisture) and management regimes (grazing intensity, cutting regime) were studied using constrained ordination techniques (canonical correspondence analysis with variance partitioning). Among the explanatory variables considered, the most important factor determining floristic composition was lithology, which explained 11.9% of floristic variability, followed by grazing intensity (6.0%). Additive effects of management and lithology explained 23.9% of floristic variability. Species niche amplitude was measured by conditional variances of samples along main ordination axes, in order to define adequate conservation management for the rarest short-lived species with narrow niche breadth on both habitat and management gradients. Historical studies were made of the changing land use (260–1995) of 14 calcareous hillsides in Upper-Normandy to investigate botanical changes over the last 200 years. Before the French Revolution in 1789, most of these hillsides were used as vineyards mixed with common sheep walks. After the French Revolution, they were distributed among inhabitants for cultivation (cereals) but they were abandoned in the nineteenth century and grazed again. Our results show that this history is correlated with important changes in the floristic composition of the calcareous hillsides between 1816 and 1995. The species richness of arable weeds and fallow-land species of former cultivated fields or vineyards decrease faster than that of chalk grassland species. The consequences of these long-term dynamics are discussed with regards to the ecological requirements and the rarity status of the species that have disappeared since 1935. We conclude with the need to take account of land use change processes, e.g. the alternation of arable fields and grasslands, to maintain the present species-richness of calcareous hillsides. The concept of a reference ecosystem is fundamental in restoration ecology, especially in assessing the success of ecological restoration projects. In response to criticism, it has undergone conceptual evolutions in its definition and use in the last decades. Even though there is still a need to develop statistical methods and analyses to account for reference variability. Here, we focus on two original and one literature‐based calculation methods for designed indexes, which all aim to compare a community to be assessed (undergoing restoration) with a variable set of reference communities. These methods either use the average reference situation (species composition and abundance) as the restoration target or on the contrary, allow any reference site to be considered a relevant target. We compare the results of these methods by analyzing a simulated dataset. We then illustrate the application of the most relevant index by a real case study that compared a created Mediterranean temporary pond to a panel of 27 reference ponds located in the south of France. The results show that the Distance to Reference Communities Index (DRCI) correctly measures differences in species composition and abundance between an assessed and a reference panel of communities. It takes into account the variability of the reference communities, while the use of other indexes focuses on unrealistic average and fixed reference values. Land developers can apply biodiversity offsetting in different ways, from a project-by-project approach to a pooled and proactive approach, this latter appearing to provide greater advantages both in terms of implementation and of the No Net Loss objective. Incorporating landscape connectivity into the mitigation hierarchy is commonly recommended, but the benefits of pooling and anticipating offsets have never really been demonstrated from modeling approaches. Here, we compare connectivity gains from two different offsetting scenarios, when interconnections at offset sites are taken and not taken into account. Assuming that gains can be increased by optimizing the location of offsets, we identified sites where biodiversity offsetting generates the greatest ecological gains in habitat connectivity. The method was applied to a study case in the suburbs of Lyon (Southern France) using several representative species and the landscape functional connectivity model Graphab. Pooling biodiversity offsets led to additional gains in overall habitat connectivity of +103% on average, which we show can be further improved (+8%) by using a patch addition process available in Graphab to plan spatially and ecologically coherent offsetting areas. Pooling and anticipating biodiversity offsets in this way can help preserve the biodiversity and the functionality of natural environments at the territorial scale. • Modeling can be used to simulate different biodiversity offsetting strategies. • Biodiversity is improved by pooling biodiversity offsets in landscapes. • Pooling biodiversity offsets improves the likelihood of achieving no net loss. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder among children. It affects patients’ lives in many ways: inattention, difficulty with stimuli inhibition or motor function regulation. Different treatments exist today, but these can present side effects or are not effective for all subgroups. Neurofeedback (NF) is an innovative treatment consisting of brain activity display. NF training could consist of a virtual reality (VR) video-game in which the participant’s attention affects the game. Attention being assessed through physiological signals, one of the main steps is to design an estimator for the attention state. We present a novel framework able to record physiological signals in specific attention states and able to estimate the corresponding attention state. We propose a database composed of electroencephalography signals (EEG), and an eye-tracker labelled with a score representing the attention span for 32 healthy participants. Different features are extracted from the signals and machine learning (ML) algorithms are proposed. Our approach exhibits high accuracy for attention estimation, which corroborates a correlation between attention state and physiological signals (i.e. EEG, eye-tracking signals). The dataset has been made publicly available to promote research in the domain and we encourage other scientists to use their own approach for attention estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long‐term studies are needed to monitor recovery following restoration, as it may take decades or even centuries, particularly in the case of Mediterranean dry grasslands, for communities to reach their former equilibrium before the degradation occurred. A multi‐component approach is also needed to evaluate restoration success and better understand the complex impacts of former restoration projects on present‐day ecological interactions and ecosystem functions. The objective of this study was to address the restoration of a Mediterranean grassland in southern France, 20 years after implementation. Particularly, we examine the long‐term impact on soil, vegetation, and arthropods of the reintroduction of a dominant grass species (Brachypodium retusum) and the restoration of the natural stone cover on a degraded former cultivated field. Soil analyses revealed that reestablishing stone cover only slightly acidified the soil, while B. retusum presence enhanced soil fertility. Brachypodium retusum also decreased the nutritional value of forage and increased plant biomass and litter. Plant composition shifted with treatments: B. retusum and stone cover favored xeromesophilous species, while B. retusum alone encouraged less palatable species. The soil seed bank composition and abundance were positively influenced by stone cover but negatively impacted by B. retusum reintroduction. Negative outcomes on some arthropods and mesofauna were measured in treatments with both B. retusum and stones, except for Acari, which were positively impacted by the presence of stones. As we enter the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) and address the urgent need to protect and restore ecosystems and their ecological functions at large scales, rewilding has been brought into the limelight. Interest in this discipline is thus increasing, with a large number of conceptual scientific papers published in recent years. Increasing enthusiasm has led to discussions and debates in the scientific community about the differences between ecological restoration and rewilding. The main goal of this review is to compare and clarify the position of each field. Our results show that despite some differences (e.g. top‐down versus bottom‐up and functional versus taxonomic approaches) and notably with distinct goals – recovery of a defined historically determined target ecosystem versus recovery of natural processes with often no target endpoint – ecological restoration and rewilding have a common scope: the recovery of ecosystems following anthropogenic degradation. The goals of ecological restoration and rewilding have expanded with the progress of each field. However, it is unclear whether there is a paradigm shift with ecological restoration moving towards rewilding or vice versa. We underline the complementarity in time and in space of ecological restoration and rewilding. Archeological investigations in one of the most species-rich French Mediterranean dry grasslands (La Crau, Southern France) revealed a dense network of ancient sheep corrals dating from Roman to modern times. By analyzing soil chemistry and vegetation across abandonment dates spanning two millennia, we bring to light a persisting signature of Roman, eighteenth century and modern corrals on present-day ecosystems. Community composition and species-richness reflect time after abandonment of sheep stables and are linked to long-term persistence of eutrophication from historical sheep concentrations. Our data highlight changes in vegetation that persist two millennia after human impacts ceased. Small-scale pastoral legacies from Roman times continue to have significant impacts on present-day herbaceous plant communities. Environmental policies and the objective of no net loss highlight the importance of preserving ecological networks to limit the fragmentation of natural habitats and biodiversity loss, especially due to urbanization. In the environmental impact assessment context, habitat connectivity and the spatio-temporal dynamics of biodiversity are crucial to obtaining reliable predictions that can support decision-making. We propose a methodological framework 1) to quantify the overall impact of a development project on the functioning of an ecological network, and 2) to select the best locations for implanting new habitat patches intended to enhance landscape connectivity. The amount of reachable habitat concept was applied to three representative terrestrial mammal species: the red squirrel, the Eurasian badger and the European hedgehog. All three species are recognized as vulnerable to human pressures and potentially affected by the construction of a new stadium in our study site, Lyon (Southern France). The method combines the species distribution model Maxent with the landscape functional connectivity model Graphab. The results showed that using any one of the avoidance and reduction measures on its own was unsuccessful in achieving the objective of no net loss when habitat connectivity is considered. However, the combination of new habitat patches and corridors offered a higher gain than distinct measures. This is especially important in the short term, when new hedgerow plantations have not yet developed enough to be used by the target species. Our findings indicate, first, the need to take the temporal scale into account in environmental impact assessment. We also show that applying the optimal scenario, constructed using a cumulative patch addition followed by a similar process testing a set of potential land-use changes, maximizes habitat connectivity. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is performed to limit potential impacts of development projects on species and ecosystem functions. However, the methods related to EIA actually pay little attention to the landscape-scale effects of development projects on biodiversity. In this study we proposed a methodological framework to more properly address the landscape-scale impacts of a new stadium project in Lyon (France) on two representative mammal species exemplary for the endemic fauna, the red squirrel and the Eurasian badger. Our approach combined species distribution model using Maxent and landscape functional connectivity model using Graphab at two spatial scales to assess habitat connectivity before and after development project implementation. The development project had a negative impact on landscape connectivity: overall habitat connectivity (PC index) decreased by −6.8% and −1.8% and the number of graph components increased by +60.0% and +17.6% for the red squirrel and the European badger respectively, because some links that formerly connected habitat patches were cut by the development project. Changes affecting landscape structure and composition emphasized the need to implement appropriate avoidance and reduction measures. Our methodology provides a useful tool both for EIA studies at each step of the way to support decision-making in landscape conservation planning. Motion capture allows accurate recording of human motion, with applications in many fields, including entertainment, medicine, sports science and human computer interaction. A common difficulty with this technology is the occurrence of missing data, due to occlusions, or recording conditions. Various models have been proposed to estimate missing data. Some are based on interpolation, low-rank properties or inter-correlations. Others involve dataset matching or skeleton constraints. While the latter have the advantage of promoting a realistic motion estimation, they require prior knowledge of skeleton constraints, or the availability of a prerecorded dataset. In this article, we propose a probabilistic averaging method of several recovery models (referred to as Probabilistic Model Averaging (PMA) in this paper), based on the likelihoods of the distances between body points. This method has the advantage of being automatic, while allowing an efficient gap data recovery. To support and validate the proposed method, we use a set of four individual recovery models, based on linear/nonlinear regression in local coordinate systems. Finally, we propose two heuristic algorithms to enforce skeleton constraints in the reconstructed motion, which can be used on any individual recovery model. For validation purposes, random gaps were introduced into motion-capture sequences, and the effects of factors such as the number of simultaneous gaps, gap length and sequence duration were analyzed. Results show that the proposed probabilistic averaging method yields better recovery than (i) each of the four individual models and (ii) two recent state-of-the-art models, regardless of gap length, sequence duration and number of simultaneous gaps. Moreover, both of our heuristic skeleton-constraint algorithms significantly improve the recovery for 7 out of 8 tested motion-capture sequences (p < 0.05), for 10 simultaneous gaps of 5 seconds. Quarrying represents one of the oldest and most important human activities; the impacts of which have largely influenced vegetation and landscape. Despite its character as a vital and non-renewable resource, the soil has been poorly studied with regard to either the impact resulting from the exploitation of quarries or its restoration after exploitation. In the plain of La Crau (south-eastern France), numerous dry alluvial quarries were exploited in the 1970s. Their exploitation lasted about ten years and they were then rapidly abandoned. At that time, there was no legal obligation to restore sites after their abandonment. In this context, following various modes of exploitation (e.g. exploitation depth), various rehabilitation options were implemented: no rehabilitation, topsoil transfer, deposits of anthropogenic materials. The absence of legislation consequently resulted in heterogeneous areas after their abandonment. Today, we have the benefit of 35 years of hindsight on the dynamics of these ecosystems resulting from these exploitation modes and rehabilitation options and thus various questions arise: (1) Did the diversity of the modes of exploitation result in heterogeneous soils 30 years after abandonment? (2) At what stage of pedogenesis are the soils created in the abandoned quarries? (3) Did the various rehabilitation options have an impact on the traces of biological activity in the soils of the quarries? (4) Is it possible to identify methods of rehabilitation of quarries that would favour the rehabilitation of the soils and the recolonisation of the plant cover in order to improve the techniques in use or to propose alternative methods? The study of soil profiles (with a special focus on biological activity of animals and plants) and soil physico-chemical analyses (pH, CaCO 3 , C, N, C:N ratio, CEC, exchangeable K + , plant available P and fine soil particle contents) made it possible to study these questions. Our results confirm that all the soils resulting from the former exploitation modes and rehabilitation options of the quarries present their own specific characteristics (upper soil layer fertility, soil profile vertical organization) which remain very different, even after 30 years, from the characteristics of the destroyed reference soil ecosystem. Pedogenetic processes are very slow or even blocked by the recurrent action of certain environmental parameters. In terms of ecological rehabilitation, only topsoil transfers undertaken under good conditions (same soil thickness as the reference steppe and no contact with the phreatic zone) have allowed to restore most of the physical and chemical properties recorded close to the reference ecosystem soil. The aim of this study was to develop an effective and non-destructive method for the selection of native Mediterranean plants with phytoremediation potential based on their spontaneous recovery capacities. The study site consisted in a mixed contaminated soils (As, Cu, Pb, Sb, Zn) in the vicinity of a former lead smelting factory abandoned since 1925 in the Calanques National Park (Marseille, southeastern France). We developed an integrated characterization approach that takes into account topsoil metal(loid)s (MM) contamination, plant community composition and structure and mesologic parameters without using destructive methods. From a statistical selection of significant environmental descriptors, plant communities were described and interpreted as the result of spontaneous recovery under multiple stresses and local conditions (both natural and anthropogenic). We collected phytoecological and MM topsoil data using field monitoring and geographic information system (GIS) on a pollution hotspot where natural plant communities occur. The results of the multivariate analysis performed between species and descriptors indicated that a century of MM pollution pressure produced a significant correlation with plant community dynamics in terms of composition, diversity and structure, leading to the co-occurrence of different plant succession stages. Thus, these successions seemed linked to the variability of anthropogenic disturbance regimes within the study site. We recorded high topsoil contamination heterogeneity at the scale both of the plot and of the whole study area that suggested a heterogeneous MM distribution pattern dependent on the source of contaminants and site environmental variability. We identified 4 spontaneous plant communities co-occurring through a MM contamination gradient that could be used later from degraded to reference communities to define ecological restoration target combined to phytoremediation applications with respect to local conditions. Our results suggested that some of the native plant species such as Coronilla juncea and Globularia alypum might be tolerant to high mixed MM soil concentrations and they could thus be used for phytostabilization purposes in polluted Mediterranean areas in regard to their life-traits. Our non-destructive methodology led both to the selection of tolerant native plant species and communities and identification of highly polluted priority intervention areas through the study site where phytostabilization should be implemented. Furthermore, by analyzing succession dynamics linked to contamination patterns throughout the area and spontaneous recovery of native tolerant vegetation, our methodology opens up broad perspectives and research fields for ecological restoration for Mediterranean protected and contaminated areas based on ecosystem trajectories and new approaches for the integrative management of polluted soils. Bioindication of ecological variables such as humidity, temperature or pH by ecological indicator values of plants is a powerful tool for research in plant ecology, e.g. to detect early vegetation changes. Here, we provide a data set of ecological indicator values including niche width for an entire regional flora. We used an extensive data-base with floristic relevés from Southern France to recalibrate indicator values for light (L), temperature (T), continentality (K), air humidity (A), soil moisture (F), pH (R), productivity (N), soil texture (G), soil organic matter content (O) and salinity (S). Values were recalibrated using average values from co-occurring plants, enabling to develop indicator values for species not yet evaluated previously. Recalibrated values are on a continuous scale and we add standard deviation, median, first and third quartile for each indicator value. Linear regression of average indicator values against measured factors showed higher correlation with recalibrated values compared to original indicator values for temperature, pH and nitrogen, and comparable R2 for moisture. Individual indicator systems performed better than a combination and applying different weighting procedures demonstrated the usefulness of inverse variance. Many degraded ecosystems need active restoration to conserve biodiversity and re‐establish ecosystem function, both highlighted targets of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the proposed EU Nature restoration law. Soil translocation, where both plant propagules and their associated soil biota are co‐introduced, has increasingly been proposed as a powerful restoration technique for terrestrial ecosystems. However, a synthesis of the effectiveness of this method across ecosystems is lacking.To address how soil translocation affects restoration success, we performed a meta‐analysis synthesizing data from 46 field experiments and their respective reference ecosystems in 17 countries across four continents. In each experiment, vegetation composition was recorded in response to soil translocation treatments and the resultant vegetational changes (diversity and composition) were quantified.We found that soil translocation leads to plant community development further away from the control and more towards the reference plant communities compared with treatments where only plant propagules were introduced. However, the variability of effect sizes among experiments was large, suggesting strong dependence of restoration success on restoration context. We found that restoration success was more likely on loamy soils and when translocation treatments were implemented over larger spatial areas (>180 m2).Furthermore, we found that restoration success either consistently increased or decreased over time depending on the experiment. Not only is this congruent with positive feedbacks between plant and soil communities driving plant community development, but it also suggests that the composition of the translocated plant and soil communities, and initial starting conditions, are critical for long‐term restoration success.Synthesis and applications. Our analysis highlights soil translocation can be a successful restoration method across a broad range of ecosystems. However, its implementation needs to depend on a thorough evaluation of local conditions and the potential added value. In restored grasslands of southern Europe, perennial plants remain highly underrepresented compared with the reference ecosystems. We tested various treatments to reintroduce common perennial plant species ( Brachypodium retusum, Poaceae, and Thymus vulgaris, Lamiaceae), which are usually not or poorly reintroduced via soil and hay transfer. Treatments included microenvironmental manipulations (rock cover and plant interactions) and two grazing intensities. Target perennial species were transplanted in 2002 in the reference grassland ecosystem (intact grassland area used as a control) and in two abandoned fields. Survival was assessed in June 2003 and June 2004. Target species shoot and root biomass were measured in June 2004. Grazing greatly reduced the survival and biomass of both target species and its effects were reinforced by summer drought: plants that did not establish well enough during the autumn and spring did not survive summer. The restored rock cover had a mild positive effect, particularly on B. retusum. There were no negative or positive plant neighbor interactions in the steppe, while there was competition in both abandoned fields. Competition was particularly intense in the abandoned melon field, composed of a dense sward of annual grasses ( Bromus sp.). In order to reintroduce perennial species to dry grasslands, the ideal combination of treatments is to exclude or reduce grazing during the first year to allow seedlings to establish and to recreate adequate microenvironmental conditions. Grazing is well-known to shape plant populations and plant communities and to affect several compartment characteristics of grazed ecosystems. Semi-natural grassland conservation depends on the maintenance of traditional extensive grazing systems which can exist for centuries, even millennia. However, very few studies have concomitantly investigated the effect of grazing management on plant, forage, litter and soil compartments and the implications of their potential interactions for conservation after recent changes in grazing practices. This study thus aimed to identify the concomitant effects of sheep grazing on the latter compartments of Mediterranean grasslands. We further investigated the effects of a recent change from millenia-old traditional herding to contemporary fenced free grazing. We also sought to determine how this change may impact the agronomic and ecological value of these grasslands. Surveys were carried out at 6 different study sites paired by the two different grazing practices in a French Mediterranean sub-steppic vegetation ("Crau" plain in Southeastern France). Using linear models and distance-based redundancy analysis, effects of grazing intensity, grazing practices and their interactions were tested on plant community, forage, litter and soil physicochemical properties. Our results show that, there was a significant effect of grazing intensity on the four studied compartments, with significantly higher species richness and evenness at moderate grazing intensity. Biomass was also significantly higher at moderate grazing intensity. Digestibility of forage, litter quality and soil fertility decreased significantly under less intensive grazing. Significant differences were also found in the relative size of the areas covered by each plant communities. Recent fenced free grazing led to significantly more intensively grazed zones, with more mesophilous/nitrophilous vegetation. Conversely, in zones traditionally less intensively grazed, the contemporary free grazing led to higher plant species-richness but again with more mesophilous species. Implications for conservation management are that the legacy of millennia-old traditional herding still compensates partly for the effects of changing practice to contemporary fenced free grazing on plant community composition but not on their relative sizes. Quarry restoration is difficult to implement due to the scarcity of the original soil. The restoration of Mediterranean dry grasslands to mitigate similar ecosystem/habitat loss is thus still a developing process. So far, very few studies have created artificial substrates to address the lack of soil. In the La Crau plain (Southeastern France), quarries were established in an ancient Mediterranean steppe‐like dry grassland. Once the remaining grassland zones were protected in 2001, quarries were extended over former intensive orchards established on the grassland in the 1990s before it was protected. Now, restoration has to be done without the unaltered protected grassland soil but with the soil from orchards, which contains fertilizers spread during the orchard exploitation. To recreate a more suitable substrate, the orchard topsoil was mixed with poor substrate materials directly extracted from the quarry (0–30 mm pebbles with sandy matrix). Different substrate mixtures were tested with or without sowing the dominant species of the grassland, a perennial grass: Brachypodium retusum (and an annual grass B. hybridum). After 5 years of monitoring, our results show that raw substrate materials (100%) limit the establishment of all species, and that, at the opposite, orchard topsoil (100%) favors a significantly higher species richness of target and non‐target species. The recommended substrate mixture to reach a compromise between high target species cover and low non‐target species cover is composed of 50% raw quarry material and 50% arable soil. Among the techniques used for the restoration of terrestrial ecosystems, soil transfer has already produced encouraging results for re-establishing species-rich grassland plant communities. On August 7 2009, a serious oil pipeline leak occurred in the La Crau steppe in south-eastern France. In 2010, more than 5 ha of steppe vegetation were then destroyed by the excavation, and removal of polluted soil. Restoration of the site was achieved by transferring 72 000 t of identical soil from a nearby quarry. Soil was applied in four treatments, each with a different degree of profile complexity. After three years (2011, 2012 and 2013), our results show that the replacement of the soil to include horizon similar to the reference steppe allows recovery of the vegetation in terms of composition, similarity and species richness of the steppe vegetation during this period. The ecological engineering guidelines aimed at limiting the transit time of the soil and the reconstitution of its vertical layer organisation resulted in the improved recovery of the vegetation without colonisation by non-target species. Abstract: HMM-based speech synthesis is very convenient for creating a synthesizer whose speaker characteristics and speaking styles can be easily modified. This can be obtained by adapting a source speaker's model to a target speaker's model, using intra-speaker voice adaptation techniques. In this paper, we focus on high-quality HMM-based speech synthesis integrating various degrees of articulation, and more specifically on the internal mechanisms leading to the perception of the degrees of articulation by listeners. Therefore the process of adapting a neutral speech synthesizer to generate hypo and hyperarticulated speech is broken down into four factors: cepstrum, prosody, phonetic transcription adaptation as well as the complete adaptation. The impact of these factors on the perceived degree of articulation is studied. Moreover, this study is complemented with an Absolute Category Rating (ACR) evaluation, allowing the subjective assessment of hypo/hyperarticulated speech through various dimensions: comprehension, non-monotony, fluidity and pronunciation. This paper quantifies the importance of prosody and cepstrum adaptation as well as the use of a Natural Language Processor able to generate realistic hypo and hyperarticulated phonetic transcriptions. Question Can topsoil removal improve restoration efficiency of several ecological engineering techniques (nurse species seeding, hay transfer and soil transfer) for restoring a Mediterranean steppe, species-rich plant community? Location La Crau area, southeast France ( Provence). Methods After the rehabilitation of a 357-ha herbaceous, sheep-grazed rangeland suitable for threatened steppe birds in a formerly abandoned industrial orchard in the last French Mediterranean steppe ( La Crau area), four experimental treatments were applied, with or without topsoil removal. Topsoil was removed on a 5000-m² area and the four treatments (control, nurse species seeding, hay transfer and soil transfer) were applied within this area where topsoil was removed and within the area where topsoil was not removed. Three years later, soil chemistry, soil seed bank, vegetation cover and height, plant species richness, composition and diversity were compared. Results Removing topsoil partly restored soil conditions and significantly reduced the non-target seed bank. Moreover, species richness and similarity to the reference steppe was significantly increased with topsoil removal. Topsoil removal, combined with soil transfer and hay transfer, created a community that most closely resembled the reference during the study period. Conclusion In order to restore plant community composition, topsoil removal is a relevant method to increase the efficiency of other ecological restoration techniques, especially those that strengthen dispersal processes. Abstract: Hypo and hyperarticulation refer to the production of speech with respectively a reduction and an increase of the articulatory efforts compared to the neutral style. Produced consciously or not, these variations of articulatory efforts depend upon the surrounding environment, the communication context and the motivation of the speaker with regard to the listener. The goal of this work is to integrate hypo and hyperarticulation into speech synthesizers, such that they are more realistic by automatically adapting their way of speaking to the contextual situation, like humans do. Based on our preliminary work, this paper provides a thorough and detailed study on the analysis and synthesis of hypo and hyperarticulated speech. It is divided into three parts. In the first one, we focus on both acoustic and phonetic modifications due to articulatory effort changes. The second part aims at developing a HMM-based speech synthesizer allowing a continuous control of the degree of articulation. This requires to first tackle the issue of speaking style adaptation to derive hypo and hyperarticulated speech from the neutral synthesizer. Once this is done, an interpolation and extrapolation of the resulting models enables to finely tune the voice so that it is generated with the desired articulatory efforts. Finally the third and last part focuses on a perceptual study of speech with a variable articulation degree, where it is analyzed how intelligibility and various other voice dimensions are affected. Abstract: Many dry herbaceous ecosystems suffer damage and are characterized by low resilience after disturbance. Among these forms of disturbance, soil excavation due to the construction of underground pipelines affects vegetation at plant community and landscape scales. Synchronic studies are the best approach for more rapid study of plant succession on ecosystems with low resilience. In order to better understand plant succession in a Mediterranean dry grassland, we compared the effect of a recent disturbance caused by the digging of a pipeline in 2006 with that of a pipeline created in 1972 in the same area. Surveys of floristic composition and richness were carried out along both pipelines in order to understand the succession after this single disturbance, one that does not drastically change soil chemical properties unlike former agricultural practices. Nevertheless, this type of disturbance still changes the floristic composition in the long term (>30 years). The first stage begins just after disturbance with the occurrence of many weed species. Another level between the first and the mature stage was characterized in our study, 30 years after the disturbance, by an assemblage of annual and perennial species but still lacking species typical of the reference steppe. The reference steppe is described as the mature level of the succession with an assemblage of typical grasses, forbs and a few small chamaephytes and, in particular, by the presence of Brachypodium retusum. This community corresponds to a very old Mediterranean grassland that has evolved under the Mediterranean climate and traditional sheep grazing management systems since the Neolithic Age. This study confirms the low resilience of this steppe community and shows the importance of pursuing research on this steppe and in particular on the biotic and abiotic processes involved in community assembly. Questions Is it possible to restore a target herbaceous plant community on ex-arable land by sowing foundation species? What is the impact of sheep grazing on the restoration of this ecosystem? How can we rapidly evaluate the success of restoration methods? Location Nature reserve of the plain of La Crau, southeast France (43° 31′ N, 4° 50′ E) Methods In an ex-arable field, we sowed an indigenous species mix in 2007. This was composed of two perennial species dominant in the reference grassland ecosystem ( Brachypodium retusum, Thymus vulgaris) and one annual species ( Trifolium subterraneum) also found on the reference grassland and which is well-known for its ability to quickly cover bare soil. These three species are called foundation species as they play an essential role in structuring the restored ecosystem community. To investigate the significances of the foundation species on community dynamics, four subordinate species were sown 1 yr later: Taeniatherum caput-medusae, Linum strictum, Evax pygmaea and Asphodelus ayardii. The subordinate species are typical plants of the reference grassland which describe well this vegetation type. Results Sowing foundation species was an effective means of reintroducing them. Their presence in the ex-arable field very rapidly promoted establishment of grassland species and impeded establishment of weeds. When grazing was excluded, the foundation species covered the ground, particularly with Trifolium subterraneum, which reached 54% ground cover. Subordinate species established better on the foundation species sown treatment and on the grazed treatment. Conclusion In the short term, sowing indigenous foundation species and maintaining grazing seems to be a good method to restore grassland plant communities that have a poor ability to re-establish spontaneously. This study also demonstrates that sowing and monitoring of subordinate species is an effective method to rapidly test whether a particular restoration protocol will have a positive effect on community assembly and development. Abstract: Source-tract decomposition (or glottal flow estimation) is one of the basic problems of speech processing. For this, several techniques have been proposed in the literature. However, studies comparing different approaches are almost nonexistent. Besides, experiments have been systematically performed either on synthetic speech or on sustained vowels. In this study we compare three of the main representative state-of-the-art methods of glottal flow estimation: closed-phase inverse filtering, iterative and adaptive inverse filtering, and mixed-phase decomposition. These techniques are first submitted to an objective assessment test on synthetic speech signals. Their sensitivity to various factors affecting the estimation quality, as well as their robustness to noise are studied. In a second experiment, their ability to label voice quality (tensed, modal, soft) is studied on a large corpus of real connected speech. It is shown that changes of voice quality are reflected by significant modifications in glottal feature distributions. Techniques based on the mixed-phase decomposition and on a closed-phase inverse filtering process turn out to give the best results on both clean synthetic and real speech signals. On the other hand, iterative and adaptive inverse filtering is recommended in noisy environments for its high robustness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Complex cepstrum is known in the literature for linearly separating causal and anticausal components. Relying on advances achieved by the Zeros of the Z-Transform (ZZT) technique, we here investigate the possibility of using complex cepstrum for glottal flow estimation on a large-scale database. Via a systematic study of the windowing effects on the deconvolution quality, we show that the complex cepstrum causal–anticausal decomposition can be effectively used for glottal flow estimation when specific windowing criteria are met. It is also shown that this complex cepstral decomposition gives similar glottal estimates as obtained with the ZZT method. However, as complex cepstrum uses FFT operations instead of requiring the factoring of high-degree polynomials, the method benefits from a much higher speed. Finally in our tests on a large corpus of real expressive speech, we show that the proposed method has the potential to be used for voice quality analysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
