Biochar-assisted water electrolysis (BAWE) facilitates the high-value utilization of biomass and energy-saving hydrogen production. However, the BAWE efficiency is hindered by slow kinetics of biochar oxidation reaction (BOR) at anode. Herein, to improve the overall efficiency of BAWE, three-dimensional porous nanosheets modified on nickel foam (Ni 1 Fe 2 -LDH@NF) was developed for BOR, and its mechanism was identified. Impressively, the BAWE system exhibited remarkable activity, including a low potential of 1.387 V vs. RHE for BOR over as-synthesized electrocatalyst at current density of 10 mA·cm−2, and excellent long-term stability over 20 h at a high current density of 200 mA·cm−2 and after 1000 CV cycles. The required electricity input was 3.29 kWh·Nm−3H 2 at 10 mA·cm−2 for BAWE with Ni 1 Fe 2 -LDH@NF toward BOR. In addition, the reaction mechanism of BOR including biochar direct oxidation on the electrocatalysts surface and indirect oxidation in the electrolyte was deduced, according to the surface chemistry and composition changes of electrocatalysts and biochar, as well as the products. This work provides an effective strategy towards the enhancement of the BOR process by designing the binder-free electrocatalysts, and facilitates the development of BAWE for energy-efficient hydrogen production and biomass utilization. Biochar-assisted water electrolysis (BAWE) offers a novel strategy for clean hydrogen production and biochar utilization. Here we propose the production of activated biochar via limited biochar electrooxidation over Ni foam and its application to remove Cr(VI). The corn straw-based biochar oxidation reaction delivers 100 mA cm−2@1.528 V vs. RHE, and reaches 98 % Faradaic efficiency for H 2 production. The electrical consumption of 4.16 kWh Nm−3 H 2 for BAWE is lower than 5.07 kWh Nm−3 H 2 for water electrolysis. After 10 h electrolysis at 5 mA cm−2, due to the direct oxidation of biochar at electrode and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species in solution, the activated biochar is formed with increased pore size and specific surface area, and full of –OH, C–O, C O, and COOH groups. The removal rate of Cr(VI) by activated biochar reaches 72.79 %, much higher than the 10.96 % for original biochar, which is attributed to the well-developed mesoporous structure of activated biochar for Cr(VI) adsorption, and the enriched –OH and COOH for Cr(VI) reduction and Cr(III) complexation. These findings confirm the feasibility of electrochemical activation of biochar in BAWE process, which demonstrate a new avenue for biochar upgrading and energy-saving hydrogen production for a sustainable future. Abstract China's rapid urbanization has aggravated its air pollution problems and subsequently results in increased interests in the relationship between urbanization and PM 2.5 concentrations. Currently, research on the ways that urbanization directly influences air quality are comparatively mature; however, quantification of the spillover effect of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations in adjacent regions remains understudied. Additionally, urbanization is a multi-dimensional phenomena in China and it is important to distinguish the ways in which the multiple aspects of urbanization influence PM 2.5 concentrations. Taking the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban agglomeration of China as an example, this study explored the spatio-temporal change and spatial dependence pattern of PM 2.5 concentrations, and further examined and compared the unique impacts of the multiple dimensions of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations. The results showed that spatial dependence of PM 2.5 generally took place over the range of 200 km in the study area. Economic urbanization had a much stronger influence on air quality than land urbanization or population urbanization; it was determined to be the best indicator to represent the impact of urbanization, especially the spillover effect of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations in adjacent regions. Over the period 2000–2010, the impacts from both local and neighboring economic urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations increased significantly. In contrast, land urbanization mainly exerted influence on air quality in focal regions. Population urbanization showed no significant direct or spillover effects on PM 2.5 concentrations in the whole urban agglomeration. This study provides evidence that the influence of urbanization within and across cities must be considered when conducting joint air pollution control in an urban agglomeration. PM 2.5 taxes based on the diffusion and transfer of environment pressures are one possible policy mechanism that could help to account for the spillover effect of economic urbanization on air quality. System-based approaches and flow-centered governance are two suggested ways to coordinate the management of both urbanization and air quality. China's rapid urbanization and severe PM 2.5 -dominated air pollution have received worldwide attention. It is important to reveal how urbanization affects the generation of PM 2.5 . A growing amount of research has examined the local urbanization impact on PM 2.5 concentrations. However, few studies have quantified the influence of neighboring urbanization in terms of the spatial dependence of PM 2.5 concentrations. Some studies considered these spatial effects but overlooked the natural controlling factors. In a comparative view among Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta urban agglomerations in China during 2000–2010, the direct and spillover effects of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations were explored using spatial regression models that set urbanization and natural indicators as core and controlling variables, respectively. The results showed natural controlling factors were statistically significant; their inclusion in the regression model improved the reliability of estimation. It was also found that the spillover effect of urbanization substantially contributed to the spatial dependence of PM 2.5 concentrations. Nevertheless, the direct and spillover effects of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations differed among urban agglomerations and changed over time due to the complexity of urbanization processes. For the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration in 2010, the direct effect showed that the urban PM 2.5 concentration increased by 0.138% averagely for every 1% increase of the urbanization level. Likewise, the spillover effect showed that urban PM 2.5 concentration increased by 0.340% for every 1% increase in the average urbanization level of its neighboring cities. In addition, the conflict between PM 2.5 abatement and urbanization level development in the three urban agglomerations was alleviated after 2007, reflected by the simultaneous improvement of urbanization level, urban air quality, and urbanization quality (the ratio of urbanization level to urban air pollution). This study provides policy makers with more detailed characterization about the impact of urbanization on PM 2.5 concentrations, and it is suggested that not only the direct effect but also the spillover effect should be taken into account in guiding air pollution control of urban agglomerations. Electrolyte, as a carrier to dissolve the biochar particles and form conductive solution, is essential for the transfer and transformation of biochar particles and free radical precursors. Herein, the effects of electrolyte type, concentration, and pH on the BOR performance of BAWE system were investigated. Results show that 1 M KOH solution as an electrolyte was more suitable for the BAWE system, and the BOR of the alkaline BAWE system had the higher electrochemical activity (E 10 = 1.649 V vs RHE, 56 mV∙dec−1) compared with the OER in conventional water electrolysis system (E 10 = 1.982 V vs RHE, 189 mV∙dec−1). The anion adsorption phenomenon appeared in acidic media restricted the BOR kinetics. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of anodic reaction components showed a first decrease and then increase trend when the pH increased. And the diffusion coefficient reached the maximum value of 3.11 × 10−3 cm2∙s−1 at pH of 13.98, which was favorable for accelerating the diffusion of reaction components from the bulk solution to the electrode surface. With water scarcity increasingly becoming a growing global risk, it is prevalent to explore water supply-demand interaction within and beyond national borders driven by global virtual water trade and its effects on water sustainability. However, there is little study on system integration of differential environmental impacts of various types of trade. Based on metacoupling framework highlighting human-nature interactions across space- within a place (intracoupling), between adjacent places (pericoupling), and between distant places (telecoupling), this study quantified the linkages and intensities of three kinds of coupling processes during global virtual water trade for the first time. Correspondingly, water stress changes under a set of trade scenarios were evaluated based on the indicator of UN SDG 6.4.2 to distinguish the influence of trade taking place on different spatial scales. Results show that during 2005–2015, local water resources supported 80% of global water consumption. Distant virtual water import was about 5 times in volume as large as adjacent virtual water import, alleviating 99.8% of global average water stress. Virtual water trade reduced water stress in 86% of developed countries and increased that in 71% of developing countries in 2005. Owing to trade, water stress in many countries with poor water resources endowment declined while that of many with relatively good endowment went up from 2005 to 2015. Our findings can help to systematically understand the influence of virtual water trade on water stress change and provide scientific guidance for sustainable water management and regional regulations. How to assort with the relationship between mountain development and ecological protection is a key issue during the process of mountainous urban construction. Ecological carrying capacity (ECC), as the key to measuring regional sustainable development in terms of society, economy and ecology, provides an approach to assess urban development potential in mountain areas. Taking Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, China as a study area, this study has explored the conceptual framework for ECC in view of coupled human and natural systems (CHANS), and has constructed an index system using aspects of ecosystem vigor (EV), resources and environmental carrying capacity (RECC), and social development ability (SDA). The results at the county level showed that: (1) Dali City had the highest EV and SDA, with a relatively good ecological background, stable geological environment, and more concentrated population and flourishing urbanization. Yunlong County occupied the best RECC for its relatively abundant stock of water and land resources. Due to well-balanced ecosystem stability maintenance, resource utilization, and human development, Yunlong County possessed the highest ECC all over the prefecture; (2) the study area can be grouped into five categories considering trade-offs between mountain development and ecological protection. That is, priority areas for conservation, priority areas for development, areas suitable for short-term conservation but long-term development, areas suitable for short-term development but long-term conversation, and areas reserved for future appropriate development. This research could help to identify the approach to sustainable mountain development from the perspective of CHANS, and to make effective contribution to urban development decision-making in mountainous areas. Natural capital is the limiting and irreplaceable factor in human welfare and sustainability. Regarding the “constancy of total natural capital” as a prudent minimum condition for sustainability, a three-dimensional ecological footprint ( 3D EF) model can distinguish the occupation of natural capital stock and the consumption of natural capital flows, and achieve reliable measures of the human demand on and nature's supply of natural capital. Taking the case of Beijing City, which faces a serious contradiction between its rapid social development and scarce natural capital, this paper presents a multidimensional “ecology-equity-efficiency” framework to quantify the sustainability of natural capital utilization. Our results indicate that (1) the consumption of capital stocks and capital flows complement each other through contrasting footprint size ( EF size ) and footprint depth ( EF depth ); (2) natural capital utilization in the 16 districts of Beijing City can be grouped into four categories. In Zone I (which includes Dongcheng, Xicheng, and Shijingshan), the depletion of stocks seriously exceeds the appropriation of flows, and thus its ecological sustainability status is the lowest compared to the other three zones; (3) according to the equity measures using both the Gini coefficient of EF size and the variation coefficient of EF depth , natural capital utilization within each of the current functional zones is significantly more balanced than that among the four functional zones or the 16 districts. Additionally, natural capital utilization within the Urban Function Extended Zone is more imbalanced than that of the other three functional zones, indicating that Shijingshan may be classified as part of the Core Function Zone; (4) the efficiency of natural capital utilization zones can be ranked as follows: IV > III > II > I, with Huairou possessing the best efficiency structure of low EF depth , medium HDI , and high EFF ; (5) according to our comprehensive evaluation of the sustainability of natural-capital use, Zone II effectively balances ecology, equity, and efficiency at present, whereas Zones I, III, and IV may benefit from a stronger emphasis on efficiency, equity, and ecology in the future, respectively. Increasingly growing consumption-based water use (WU) combined with climate change have exacerbated water stress globally and regionally, yet little is known about how the WU change is affected by metacoupled processes which involve human-nature interactions across space; within and across adjacent and distant places. This study aims to unveil the spatio-temporal pattern of China's WUs during 2007–2015 and its underlying local and non-local drivers. Results show that China's total WU exhibited an upward trend from 386.7 billion m³; in 2007 to 431.2 billion m³ in 2012 but dropped to 412.6 billion m³ by 2015. Widespread and continuous water use efficiency improvement contributed most to offsetting the increase in WU driven by the rising affluence and growing population in the context of rapid urbanization and industrialization. Economic structure drove a relatively large WU reduction (responsible for −23.7% of the WU change during 2007–2015), in line with China's ongoing transform from a capital investment-driven economy to a consumption-driven one and decoupling economic growth from environmental pressure. The population share representing the non-local factor of migration effect was large enough to be seen clearly in the changing WUs across China: the WUs of coastal areas ascended while inland areas descended, which was in accordance with migration patterns. Our findings could make a valuable contribution to decision-making in identifying hotspot areas, charting systematic courses for sustainable water use, and combining demand-oriented and supply-oriented measures. Use of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to build long-term vegetation trends is one of the most effective techniques for identifying global environmental change. Trend identification can be achieved by ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis or the Theil–Sen (TS) procedure with a Mann–Kendall (MK) significance test, and these linear regression approaches have been widely used. However, vegetation changes are not linear, and thus the response of vegetation to global climate change may follow non-linear trends. In this article, a polynomial trend-fitting method, which uses stepwise regression and expands on previous research, is presented. With an improved fitting ability, this procedure may reveal trends that were concealed by linear fitting methods. Globally, the traditional TS-MK method reveals significant greening trends for 37.27% of vegetated land, and significant browning trends for 7.98%. Using the polynomial analysis, 34.62% of pixels were fitted by high-order trends. The significant greening trends covered up to 30% of cultivated land, thus indicating that cultivated vegetation may be increasing faster than natural vegetation. Significant vegetation browning mostly occurred in sparse vegetation areas, which suggests that vegetation growth may be more sensitive to climate change in arid regions. Minimizing the ecological impact of land development is a fundamental principle of sustainable development. Ecological suitability assessment is the key to realizing sustainability and is also significant for optimizing spatial patterns of territorial development. Especially in mountainous areas where the ecosystem is both vulnerable and important, quantitative evaluation of ecological suitability for land development is particularly important and urgent given current development strategy of urban construction in mountainous areas in China. Taking Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, a representative urban construction zone in a mountainous area in Yunnan Province, China, as a study area, and based on the fundamental theory of structural and functional dynamics from landscape ecology, this study has explored the integrated ecological resistance (IER) conceptual model and constructed an index system with aspects of ecological elements, ecological importance, and ecological resilience. The results showed that: (1) the ecological suitability level was higher in the north than in the south and higher in the east than in the west, as well as higher in the Bazi region than in mountainous areas. Dali City, Binchuan County, and Xiangyun County had large ecological suitable zones for development and construction. Foci of ecological resistance having strong ecological constraints were mainly concentrated in Heqing County and in various other places; (2) by combining the integrated ecological resistance and arable land distributions, the study area was zoned into five regions: prior development zone, moderate development zone, potential development zone, restricted development zone, and forbidden development zone. Moderate, potential, and restricted development zones occupied most of the area, accounting for 28.89%, 24.69%, and 21.40%, respectively, whereas prior development zones accounted for only 8.91%; (3) based on the areal proportions of ecological suitability zoning, the 12 counties of Dali Prefecture can be grouped into three categories: prior areas for conservation, comprehensive development areas, and prior areas for development. Xiangyun County and Binchuan County should be regarded as key areas of Dali Prefecture for urban construction in mountainous areas. This research has explored an ecological suitability evaluation system from the perspective of landscape ecology and made fully understanding of ecological suitability factors in the study area, which provided a good reference to ecological suitability evaluation for mountainous area development in the worldwide. Physical geography focuses on the Earth surface system and is dedicated to revealing how people affect the environment and how the environment reacts to people. Based on its characteristic spatial cognitive perspective, the inductive–deductive combined approach, and the comprehensive research paradigm that integrates multiple elements, processes, and scales, physical geography always provides an important scientific basis for understanding human–nature interactions and solving sustainable development issues in different eras. Putting theory into practice, physical geography plays a pivotal role in realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and China's goal of ecological civilization. At present, China is in a stage of rapid socio-economic development and global conditions are changing more quickly than ever. Based on its disciplinary characteristics and traditional advantages, physical geography in China should always develop around social needs and play an increasing role in resource- and environment-related policies and outreach. Future development of physical geography as a discipline in China is expected, taking spatial cognition as the basic perspective and human–nature interaction as the core content, along with the combination of deductive and inductive approaches and the strengthening of interregional integration, all under the goal of sustainability. Considering the shared environmental challenges and the complexity of interconnections between countries in the context of globalization, the academic exploration and practice of physical geography in China have been providing scientific support for the sustainable development of China and beyond. Biochar-assisted water electrolysis (BAWE) has the potential to reduce the electricity consumption of hydrogen production. However, prolonged electrolysis leads to over-oxidation of biochar, reduced reactivity, and decreasing hydrogen production at cathode. Herein, we proposed the electrochemical activation of biochar via limited biochar oxidation reaction (BOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in BAWE process, and the upgraded biochar was employed to remove Cr(VI). Distinct biochar was first pyrolyzed from three kinds of representative biomass components, cellulose, lignin, and their mixture at different temperatures. All of them exhibited excellent BOR activity, especially the biochar derived by the pyrolyzed cellulose and lignin at 800 °C (MBC-800) required a potential as low as 1.319 V vs. RHE@1 mA cm−2 using Pt electrode in 1 M KOH and achieved a Faraday efficiency almost 100% for hydrogen production. BAWE presented an energy-saving electrical consumption of 4.98 kWh Nm−3 H 2 compared to the conventional water electrolysis of 5.32 kWh Nm−3 H 2. Electrochemical oxidation enriched the oxygen-containing groups on biochar surface, which significantly improved its reductivity towards Cr(VI) and complexation with Cr(III), leading to the removal rate of Cr(VI) more than doubled. Results showed the achievement of electrochemical activation of biochar by limited electrooxidation. Irrigated agriculture has had an enormous influence on food security, water security and human well-being. Water footprint (how much water is used), water scarcity (how scarce water is), and crop water productivity (how much productivity irrigation adds) are important indicators for evaluating sustainability in irrigated agriculture. Yet these interrelated indicators have not been studied simultaneously at the county level – the basic administrative unit of agricultural planning and water management in countries such as China, India and Japan. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed a demonstration in China's major crop production region, the North China Plain (NCP)'s 207 counties from 1986 to 2010. The results show that the irrigated agriculture's annual water footprint in the North China Plain increased from 53 billion m3 in 1986 to 78 billion m3 in 2010. All counties faced water scarcity during 1986-2010 even as the average crop water productivity increased from 0.90 kg m−3 to 1.94 kg m−3. There are 173 NCP counties suffering severe water scarcity but still producing significant crop yield with a high water footprint, a red flag of unsustainable irrigated agriculture. Abstract The rapid process of urbanization, accompanied by the sharp increase of urban population and expansion of artificial surface, has resulted in the loss of natural ecosystems and the degradation of ecosystem services. Identifying and protecting key places that have high importance for ecological sustainability are great challenges. Ecological security patterns are such an integrated approach to protecting regional ecological sustainability. In this study, taking Yunnan Province, China as a case study area, ecological sources were identified through ecosystem services, and circuit theory was used to model ecosystem processes in heterogeneous landscapes via calculating the ‘resistance’ or ‘current’, and thus to identify ecological corridors and key ecological nodes. The results showed that, ecological security patterns included 66 ecological sources, 186 ecological corridors, 24 pinch-points and 10 barriers. In details, the ecological sources were mainly distributed in the southwest and northwest of Yunnan Province, with the ecological corridors locating along the high mountains, and both ecological sources and corridors were mostly covered with forest land. Pinch-points covered by forest land and cultivated land, were distributed in the middle of Yunnan Province along the rivers. Approximately 75.9% nature reserves were located in the identified ecological sources, and the remainings were mainly distributed in eastern Yunnan Province with small area, showing the effectiveness in identifying ecological security patterns. Among 81 projects of low–slope hill development carried out in Yunnan Province, 46.9% showed potential human stress on regional ecological security. Based on ecosystem services and circuit theory, this study provides a new approach to identifying the spatial range of ecological corridors and the specific location of key nodes for effective ecological conservation and restoration. The effect of ZXT on the transcriptional activity of SREBPs was detected by reporter gene assay. Proteins and downstream genes of mTOR/SREBPs pathway were detected in vivo and in vitro. Combined with network pharmacology and HPLC-Q-TOF/MS, the active ingredients were screened and identified. The interaction between active compounds of ZXT and FKBP38 protein were analyzed by docking analysis. ZXT decreased TC, TG and LDL-c levels in blood of WD-induced hyperlipidemia mouse model, and improved insulin resistance in vivo. ZXT also reduced TC, TG and lipid accumulation in cells line, and inhibited SREBPs luciferase activity, protein and its target genes expression such as FASN , HMGCR , etc. Meanwhile, ZXT inhibited protein expression levels of p-mTOR, p-S6K, etc in vitro and in vivo. Combined with network pharmacology and HPLC-Q-TOF/MS, 16 active ingredients were screened and identified. Docking results showed that active compounds of ZXT binding to FKBP38 and formed hydrogen bond. Our findings highlighted that ZXT ameliorates hyperlipidemia, in which FKBP/mTOR/SREBPs pathway might be the potential regulatory mechanism. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
