Maternal germ plasm determines the germline in birds. Previously, we proposed the chicken-specific Bucky ball (cBuc) as a functional equivalent of the zebrafish germ plasm organizer. This study demonstrated the maternal cBuc synthesis, and verified a highly dynamic distribution of Bucky ball from oocyte nests to maturing follicles using specific antibodies. The dynamic re-localization of cBuc from the ovarian stroma to the granulosa cells, and the Balbiani structure of the oocyte was revealed. Following the accumulation of cBuc in the Balbiani body, an increased signal of chicken vasa homolog (CVH) in close contact to cBuc could be detected. Highest transcription of cBuc was recorded in follicles with diameters up to 500 µm. First RNA-interference experiments in an in-vivo follicle culture assay revealed inhibiting effects on cBuc in small follicles. Fluvial transport of organic carbon from the terrestrial biosphere to the oceans is an important term in the global carbon cycle. Traditionally, the long-term burial flux of fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) is estimated using river suspended sediment flux; however, organic carbon can also travel in river bedload as coarse particulate organic matter (POM Bed). Estimates of fluvial POC export to the ocean are highly uncertain because few studies document POM bed sources, flux, and evolution during long-range fluvial transport from uplands to ocean basins. This knowledge gap limits our ability to determine the global terrestrial organic carbon burial flux. In this study we investigate the flux, sources, and transformations of POM Bed during fluvial transport over a ∼1300 km long reach of the Río Bermejo, Argentina, which has no tributary inputs. To constrain sourcing of POM Bed , we analyzed the composition and stable hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios (δ2 H, δ13 C) of plant wax biomarkers from POM Bed at six locations along the Río Bermejo and compared this to samples of suspended sediment, soil, leaf litter, and floating organic debris (POM float) from both the lowland and headwater river system. Across all samples, we found no discernible differences in n -alkane average chain length or n C29 δ13 C, indicting a common origin for all sampled POM Bed. Leaf litter and POM float n C29 δ2 H values decrease with elevation, making it a useful proxy for POM Bed source elevation. Biomarker δ2 H values suggest that POM Bed is a mix of distally derived headwater and locally recruited floodplain sources at all sampling locations. These results indicate that POM Bed can be preserved during transport through lowland rivers for hundreds of kilometers. However, the POM Bed flux decreases with increasing transport distance, suggesting mechanical comminution of these coarse organic particles and progressive transfer into the suspended load. Our provisional estimates suggest that the carbon flux from POM Bed comprises less than 1 % of the suspended load POC flux in the Río Bermejo. While this represents a small portion of the river POC flux, this coarse, high-density material likely has a higher probability of deposition and burial in sedimentary basins, potentially allowing it to be more effective in long-term CO 2 drawdown relative to fine suspended particles. Because the rate and ratio of POM Bed transport versus comminution likely vary across tectonic and climatic settings, additional research is needed to determine the importance of POM Bed in the global carbon cycle. Motivation Protein sequence comparison is a fundamental element in the bioinformatics toolkit. When sequences are annotated with features such as functional domains, transmembrane domains, low complexity regions or secondary structure elements, the resulting feature architectures allow better informed comparisons. However, many existing schemes for scoring architecture similarities cannot cope with features arising from multiple annotation sources. Those that do fall short in the resolution of overlapping and redundant feature annotations. Results Here, we introduce FAS, a scoring method that integrates features from multiple annotation sources in a directed acyclic architecture graph. Redundancies are resolved as part of the architecture comparison by finding the paths through the graphs that maximize the pair-wise architecture similarity. In a large-scale evaluation on more than 10 000 human-yeast ortholog pairs, architecture similarities assessed with FAS are consistently more plausible than those obtained using e-values to resolve overlaps or leaving overlaps unresolved. Three case studies demonstrate the utility of FAS on architecture comparison tasks: benchmarking of orthology assignment software, identification of functionally diverged orthologs, and diagnosing protein architecture changes stemming from faulty gene predictions. Bucky ball was identified as germ plasm organizer in zebrafish and has proven crucial for Balbiani body condensation. A synteny comparison identified an uncharacterized gene locus in the chicken genome as predicted avian counterpart. Here, we present experimental evidence that this gene locus indeed encodes a 'Bucky ball' equivalent in matured oocytes and early embryos of chicken. Heterologous expression of Bucky ball fusion proteins both from zebrafish and chicken with a fluorescent reporter revealed unique patterns indicative for liquid–liquid phase separation of intrinsically disordered proteins. Immuno-labeling detected Bucky ball from oocytes to blastoderms with diffuse distribution in matured oocytes, aggregation in first cleavage furrows, and co-localization to the chicken vasa homolog (CVH). Later, Bucky ball translocated to the cytoplasm of first established cells, and showed nuclear translocation during the major zygotic activation together with CVH. Remarkably, during the phase of area pellucida formation, Bucky ball translocated back into the cytoplasm at stage EGK VI, whereas CVH remained within the nuclei. The condensation of Bucky ball and co-localization with CVH in cleavage furrows and nuclei of the centrally located cells strongly suggests chicken Bucky ball as a germ plasm organizer in birds, and indicate a special importance of the major zygotic activation for germline specification. The aim of this study was to detect a response difference in primary (PLC) and secondary liver tumors (SLC) with magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) after TACE therapy. Thirty-one patients (25/31 male; mean age 69.6 years [range: 39–85 years]) with repeated TACE therapy of HCC were compared with twenty-seven patients (27/27 female; mean age 61.2 years [range 39–81 years]) with repeated TACE therapy of metastatic liver disease due to breast cancer. Both groups underwent either one (n = 31) or two (n = 27) repetitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRE exams in 4- to 6-week intervals using a 1.5-T-scanner. MRE-based liver stiffness and size measurements were evaluated in tumorous lesions and in healthy liver lobe controls. PLC showed a significantly larger tumor size compared to SLC (26.4 cm2 vs. 11 cm2, p = 0.007) and a higher degree of stiffness (5.8 kPa vs. 5.1 kPa, p = 0.04). Both tumors decreased in size during the cycles (PLC: p = 0.8 and SLC: p < 0.0001) and lesions showed an increase in stiffness (PLC: p = 0.002 and SLC: p = 0.006). MRE demonstrates that PLC and SLC have similar responses to TACE therapy. PLC had a greater increase in stiffness and SLC got smaller. Environmental water management often benefits from a risk‐based approach where information on the area of interest is characterized, assembled, and incorporated into a decision model considering uncertainty. This includes prior information from literature, field measurements, professional interpretation, and data assimilation resulting in a decision tool with a posterior uncertainty assessment accounting for prior understanding and what is learned through model development and data assimilation. Model construction and data assimilation are time consuming and prone to errors, which motivates a repeatable workflow where revisions resulting from new interpretations or discovery of errors can be addressed and the analyses repeated efficiently and rigorously. In this work, motivated by the real world application of delineating risk‐based (probabilistic) sources of water to supply wells in a humid temperate climate, a scripted workflow was generated for groundwater model construction, data assimilation, particle‐tracking and post‐processing. The workflow leverages existing datasets describing hydrogeology, hydrography, water use, recharge, and lateral boundaries. These specific data are available in the United States but the tools can be applied to similar datasets worldwide. The workflow builds the model, performs ensemble‐based history matching, and uses a posterior Monte Carlo approach to provide probabilistic capture zones describing source water to wells in a risk‐based framework. The water managers can then select areas of varying levels of protection based on their tolerance for risk of potential wrongness of the underlying models. Two improved, fast, feasible, scalable, and economic synthetic protocols for the laboratory scale manufacturing of 3,5-dinitro- 1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-4-amine (PicADNP) are described. The previous set of analytical data from an earlier publication could be verified and complemented by additional measurements. The material was fully characterized by multinuclear NMR, spectroscopic methods, elemental analysis, DSC and DTA, as well as X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure was elucidated and Hirshfeld surface analysis, as well as 2D fingerprint plot analysis for the assessment of sensitivities towards external stimuli was applied. The sensitivity towards shock, friction and electrostatic discharge was also determined experimentally. The performance of the title compound was calculated by applying the EXPLO5 computer code and the theoretical results were compared with the results of SSRT and booster testing experiments. The title compound combines good energetic properties with improved safety characteristics and could find its way into application as a new booster explosive to replace the state-of-the-art material PETN. The optimizations of the synthetic protocol comprise a greener solvent system, shorter reaction times, higher yields for the pure material and a nontoxic byproduct to make the manufacturing process more attractive and better suitable for a subsequent scale up to the technical and industrial scale. Background: In 2006, the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) used a modified Delphi process to enlist SIS member-experts to identify 15 research priorities in the field of surgical infectious diseases; it was intended to serve as a research road map for the next one to two decades. We sought to evaluate the progress made in each of these priority areas. Hypothesis: We examined the progress achieved with respect to the 15 research areas identified by the Delphi process at that time, hypothesizing that advances in knowledge would be achieved in most domains, if not all. Methods: Surgical Infection Society members were surveyed to determine whether each priority area question had been satisfactorily answered in the last 14 years; to assess the quality of evidence answering each question (1-3 scale); and to delineate whether there is a current unmet need for continued research in each area. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding these initiatives were also identified via literature search and their citations in the literature were tabulated. Results: Sixty-six members of the SIS responded to the survey. Thirteen of 15 research priority areas saw an increase in data perceived to be available as adjudged by experts, as well an increase in the number of RCTs addressing that topic. However, there were only six questions that were deemed by experts to be answered sufficiently, primarily regarding antibiotic duration for certain conditions and the impact of glycemic control on infection. The questions that remained unanswered related to nosocomial infections, sepsis/septic shock, prevention of SSI, and antimicrobial pharmacokinetics. For a majority of the questions that experts believed were not answered sufficiently (8/9), respondents opined that continued research into these areas was warranted. Conclusion: Whereas 40% (6/15) of the research questions prioritized by the SIS in 2006 were answered to the satisfaction of member-experts, there are many questions that remain unanswered despite an increase of available data. Revisiting these research priorities highlights advancements made in the field of surgical infections, but also helps identify the areas that would benefit from continued study. The development of cryopreservation protocols for Anopheles gambiae could significantly improve research and control efforts. Cryopreservation of any An. gambiae life stage has yet to be successful. The unique properties of embryos have proven to be resistant to any practical cryoprotectant loading. Therefore, we have chosen to investigate early non-feeding first instar larvae as a potential life stage for cryopreservation. In order to determine an appropriate cryoprotective compound, larvae were treated with progressively better glass-forming cryoprotective mixtures. Toxicity evaluation in combination with calorimetry-based water content and supercooling point depression assessments were used to determine the cryoprotectants that could be used for cryostorage of viable larvae. Approximately 35–75% of the larvae were viable after reasonably high osmotic and biochemical challenge. This study provides ample evidence for an active osmoregulatory response in the Anopheles larvae to counter the permeation of cryoprotectants from the surrounding medium. The data show a strong correlation between the larval mortality and water content, indicating an osmoregulatory crisis in the larva due to certain cryoprotectants such as the higher concentrations of ethane diol (ED). The observations also indicate that the ability of the larvae to regulate permeation and water balance ceases at or within 20 min of cryoprotectant exposure, but this is strongly influenced by the treatment temperature. Among the compound cryoprotectants tested, 25% ED + 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and 40% ED + 0.5 M trehalose seem to present a compromise between viability, larval water content, supercooling point depression, and glass forming abilities. Demnach lassen vor allem zwei Beiträge einen synthetischen Ton einem echten Pianoton ähnlich erscheinen: die Existenz eines Obertonspektrums und eine zeitlich langsam ausklingende Komponente. Across Europe, the refugee crisis of 2015 and 2016 triggered debates about the openness of societies as well as the nature and flexibility of the collective national identity. The Finnish Åland Islands and the Italian province of South Tyrol enjoy an extensive degree of autonomy within otherwise unitary states, and have developed far‐reaching legal and other formal mechanisms for the protection of minorities. The respective statutes of autonomy guarantee the existence and use of Swedish and German, respectively, and thus protect the status of their bearers in relation to the majority population. We argue that the process of gaining and sustaining autonomy has, in turn, created a strong institutional basis for the formation of the collective identity. As a result, the Ålandic and South Tyrolean societies have been flexible and effective in their approach to the integration of migrants as new minority groups. At the same time, neither immigration in general nor the recent wave of refugees has had a pronounced impact on existing concepts of identity, let alone resulted in a change to the way identities are constructed in socio‐political terms. Business librarians offer many data services to their researchers. These services are often focused more on discovery, visualization, and analysis than general data management. But, with the replication crisis facing many business disciplines, there is a need for business librarians to offer more data sharing and general data management support to their researchers. To find evidence of this data need, 146 business journal's data sharing policies were reviewed and analyzed to uncover meaningful trends in business research. Results of the study indicate data sharing is not mandated by business journals. However, data sharing is often encouraged and recommended. This journal policy content analysis provides evidence that business researchers have opportunities to share their research data, and with the right data management support, business librarians can play a significant role in improving the data sharing behaviors of business researchers. Prostate cancer (PC) is the most prevalent cancer in men in Switzerland. However, evidence on the real-world health care use of PC patients is scarce. The aim of this study is to describe health care utilization, treatment patterns, and medical costs in PC patients over a period of five years (2014–2018). We used routinely collected longitudinal individual-level claims data from a major provider of mandatory health insurance in Switzerland. Due to the lack of diagnostic coding in the claims data, we identified treated PC patients based on the treatments received. We described health care utilization and treatment pathways for patients with localized and metastatic PC. Costs were calculated from a health care system perspective. A total of 5591 PC patients met the inclusion criteria. Between 2014 and 2018, 1741 patients had outpatient radiotherapy for localized or metastatic PC and 1579 patients underwent radical prostatectomy. 3502 patients had an androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). 9.5% of these patients had a combination therapy with docetaxel, and 11.0% had a combination with abiraterone acetate. Docetaxel was the most commonly used chemotherapy (first-line; n = 413, 78.4% of all patients in chemotherapy). Total medical costs of PC in Switzerland were estimated at CHF 347 m (95% CI 323–372) in 2018. Most PC patients in this study were identified based on the use of ADT. Medical costs of PC in Switzerland amounted to 0.45% of total health care spending in 2018. This paper describes development of a nitrate decision support tool for groundwater wells (GW-NDST) that combines nitrate leaching and groundwater lag-times to compute well concentrations. The GW-NDST uses output from support models that simulate leached nitrate, groundwater age distributions, and nitrate reduction rates. The support models are linked through convolution to simulate nitrate transport to wells. Spatially distributed parameters were adjusted through calibration to 34,255 nitrate sample targets. Prediction uncertainty is illustrated via Monte Carlo realizations informed during calibration. Over 78% of target concentrations were within the simulated range of results from 450 realizations. An example forecasting scenario illustrates that a range of feasible outcomes exist and should be considered when interpreting forecasts for decision making. LibGuides are widely used in academic libraries to organize information and resources to better serve their users, yet the maintenance of LibGuides across many different academic libraries ranges from neglectful to fastidious, making it difficult to determine the accuracy and helpfulness of information on LibGuides (Randtke & Burrell, 2012). A Scrapy-based Python script developed by the SIS Programming Team was used to crawl the LibGuides of each academic library member of the ARL, and a second script was used to test the HTTP status of each link. Maintaining link validity in LibGuides is a proactive and strong first step toward patron satisfaction, and using a combination of scripts and manual processes can be a proactive way to monitor link validity and fight link rot. Perioperative blood transfusion is common after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) and may predispose patients to infectious complications. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between perioperative blood transfusion and the development of post-surgical infection after PD. Patients who underwent PD from 2014 to 2015 were identified in the NSQIP pancreas-specific database. Logistic regression analysis was used to compute adjusted odds ratios (aOR) to identify an independent association between perioperative red blood cell transfusion (within 72 h of surgery) and the development of post-operative infection after 72 h. A total of 6869 patients underwent PD during this time period. Of these, 1372 (20.0%) patients received a perioperative blood transfusion. Patients receiving transfusion had a higher rate of post-operative infection (34.7% vs 26.5%, p < 0.001). After adjusting for significant covariates, perioperative transfusion was independently associated the subsequent development of any post-operative infection (aOR 1.41 [1.23–1.62], p < 0.001), including pneumonia (aOR 2.01 [1.48–2.74], p < 0.001), sepsis (aOR 1.62 [1.29–2.04], p < 0.001), and septic shock (aOR 1.92 [1.38–2.68], p < 0.001). The relation between the gluon density in a hadron and entanglement entropy can shed a new light on the high energy scattering behavior of hadrons. Using the holographic light-front QCD framework the growth above the classical geometric cross section is directly related to the increase of the internal quantum entropy from the entangled parton distribution in hadrons. A rather consistent picture emerges from the scale dependence of the Pomeron from the QCD evolution of the gluon distribution function g (x , μ) , the rising of the integrated cross section in photoproduction of vector mesons, the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments at HERA, hadron multiplicity and quantum entropy. Groundwater flow and particle tracking models are critical tools to simulate the natural system, contaminant fate and transport, and effects of remediation. Constrained optimization uses models to systematically explore the interplay between remedial design and contaminant fate, considering uncertainty. Sequential Linear Programming (SLP) provides a design alternative addressing a single goal (e.g. maximum hydraulic containment, maximum mass removal). Multi-objective algorithms like Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) explore the tradeoffs among such objectives and more (e.g. cost, public-supply well contamination). We explore both approaches at a contaminated site in Long Island, New York USA. We compare the algorithms and ramifications on results. NSGA-II explores, at additional computational cost, explicit tradeoffs among multiple objectives, providing additional insights relative to SLP. The NGSA-II algorithm allows for graphical consideration of three objectives. SLP decision variables often settle at predetermined bounds. Bounds assignment thus differs from parameter estimation; bounds must be acceptable rather than safeguards. Background: Studies comparing laparoscopic versus open resection of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) typically involve small comparative groups and often do not control for tumor size or stage of disease. The objective of this study was to compare adjusted survival outcomes for laparoscopic versus open GIST.Method: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2010 to 2014 was evaluated for gastric and small intestinal GIST resections. After stratification by disease stage and adjustment for patient demographics, comorbidity score, tumor size, and tumor location, 90-day mortality rates were compared based on laparoscopic versus open resection. Kaplan-Meier estimates of long-term survival were also compared. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine hazard ratios (HR) for survival.Results: There were 5096 cases analyzed, including 2910 (57%) stage I, 954 (19%) stage II, and 1232 (24%) stage III cases. The distribution of laparoscopic versus open cases was 1291 (44%) versus 1619 (56%) for stage I, 318 (33%) versus 636 (67%) for stage II, and 286 (23%) versus 946 (77%) for stage III. There was no significant difference in adjusted 90-day mortality between laparoscopic and open resection. Kaplan-Meier estimates of long-term survival demonstrated improved overall survival curves for laparoscopic resection for stage I and stage II disease, but no significant difference for stage III disease. Factors associated with statistically significant higher adjusted overall mortality included older age (HR 1.06; p < 0.001), black race (HR 1.33; p = 0.04), higher comorbidity score (HR 1.47; p < 0.001), and small intestinal versus gastric tumor location (HR 1.28; p = 0.03). The hazards model suggested improved overall survival for females (HR 0.59; p < 0.001) and laparoscopic approach (HR 0.80; p = 0.06).Conclusion: Laparoscopic and open GIST resection have comparable 90-day mortality with possible improved long-term survival with laparoscopy for early-stage disease. A critical social sciences perspective, critical race and disability studies, media studies, lived experience, and the neurodivergence movement shape a conceptual framework in this paper to critique and resist popular media tropes of autistic people and their families. 'Normal' and its modern meanings are presented, followed by a theoretical re-framing. Then, an irreverent and informal critique of one example US newscast highlights the dominant narrative and invites readers to unlearn these myths of normal. Recurring hegemonic news frames reflect a larger culture where familial abuse and violence against autistic people is dangerously presented as reasonable. Counter narratives exist, however. Autism can be understood as a natural, integral, welcome part of a wider human neurodiversity that enriches society. Graduate students at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, funded by an Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant (Experience Assessment: UX-A), were tasked with conducting two space assessment studies in the University of Tennessee Libraries. This article reflects on their experiences in conducting the study by understanding the history of academic library and library space assessment. The researchers provide an overview of their learning experience and best practices in space assessment. Extracellular nucleotides (e.g., ATP, ADP, UTP, UDP) released by inflammatory cells interact with specific purinergic P2 type receptors to modulate their recruitment and activation. The focus of this review is on stimuli and mechanisms of extracellular nucleotide release and its consequences during inflammation. Necrosis leads to non-specific release of nucleotides, whereas specific release mechanisms include vesicular exocytosis and channel-mediated release via connexin or pannexin hemichannels. These release mechanisms allow stimulated inflammatory cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, and endothelial cells to fine-tune autocrine/paracrine responses during acute and chronic inflammation. Key effector functions of inflammatory cells are therefore regulated by purinergic signaling in acute and chronic diseases, making extracellular nucleotide release a promising target for the development of new therapies. Semiclassical light-front bound-state equations for hadrons are presented and compared with experiment. The essential dynamical feature is the holographic approach; that is, the hadronic equations in four-dimensional Minkowski space are derived as holograms of classical equations in a 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. The form of the equations is constrained by the imposed superconformal algebra, which fixes the form of the light-front potential. If conformal symmetry is strongly broken by heavy quark masses, the combination of supersymmetry and the classical action in the 5-dimensional space still fixes the form of the potential. By heavy quark symmetry, the strength of the potential is related to the heavy quark mass. The contribution is based on several recent papers in collaboration with Stan Brodsky and Guy de Téramond. This study explored the role of psychological trait factors in sexual desire and sexual activity. In particular, it investigated how these factors may contribute to maintaining a balance between motivational aspects and self-control abilities, as both have been considered important in relation to adaptive sexuality. Moreover, the study explored the relationship between sexual desire, activity, and satisfaction. Participants completed questionnaires assessing sexual desire (dyadic, solitary), sexual activity (with a partner, alone), sexual satisfaction, approach and avoidance motivation, attachment, self-control, sensation seeking, and mindfulness. Cluster analyses, based on participants' level of sexual desire and sexual activity, highlighted three distinct profiles for each gender related to different types of psychological functioning: (a) participants with high dyadic sexual desire and activity were the most sexually satisfied, showed optimal psychological functioning, and were characterized by a balance between motivational tendencies to seek positive rewards and self-control abilities (high approach motivation, secure attachment, high self-control, high mindfulness); (b) participants with high dyadic and solitary sexual desire and activity were moderately satisfied and showed a type of psychological functioning predominantly characterized by impulsivity (an overly high motivation to obtain rewards in women, and low self-control in men); (c) participants with low dyadic sexual desire and activity were the least sexually satisfied and were characterized by high motivation to avoid negative consequences and low self-control (high avoidance motivation, insecure attachment, and poor mindfulness). This study explored the link between body image and desire to engage in sexual activity (dyadic and solitary desire) in adult women living in a long-term couple relationship. Moreover, it considered two psychological factors that may underlie such a link: the occurrence of body-related distracting thoughts during sexual activity and encoding style (i.e., the tendency to rely on preexisting internal schemata versus external information at encoding). A total of 53 women (29 to 47 years old) in heterosexual relationships completed questionnaires assessing sexual desire (dyadic, solitary), body image, body-related distracting thoughts during sexual activity, and encoding style. Results showed that poor body image was associated with low dyadic and solitary sexual desire. Body-related distracting thoughts during sexual activity mediated the link between body image and solitary (but not dyadic) sexual desire. Finally, the mediation of body-related distracting thoughts between body image and solitary sexual desire was moderated by encoding style. A negative body image promoted the occurrence of body-related distracting thoughts during sexual activity, especially in internal encoders. Our study highlights the importance of body image, distracting thoughts, and encoding style in women’s solitary sexuality and suggests possible factors that may reduce the impact of those body-related factors in dyadic sexual desire. The resonance frequency of a Helmholtz resonator with several openings is derived, taking into account the radiation feedback between the different holes. This is done under the assumption that the distance between the openings is large as compared to their linear dimensions. The effect of a finite wall thickness of the resonator is also discussed. This article examines individual variability in sexual desire and sexual satisfaction by exploring the relation between these sexual aspects and sexual attitudes (implicit and explicit) and by taking gender into account, as this has been shown to be an influential factor. A total of 28 men and 33 women living in heterosexual relationships completed questionnaires assessing sexual desire (dyadic, solitary), sexual satisfaction, and explicit sexual attitudes. An adapted version of the Affect Misattribution Procedure was used to assess implicit sexual attitudes. Results showed higher levels of dyadic and solitary sexual desire in men than in women. No gender differences were found regarding sexual satisfaction or sexual attitudes. High dyadic sexual desire was associated with positive implicit and explicit sexual attitudes, regardless of gender. However, solitary sexual desire was significantly higher in men than women and was associated, in women only, with positive implicit sexual attitudes, suggesting that solitary sexual desire may fulfill different functions in men and women. Finally, sexual satisfaction depended on the combination of explicit and implicit sexual attitudes in both men and women. This study highlights the importance of considering both implicit and explicit sexual attitudes to better understand the mechanisms underlying individual variability in sexual desire and satisfaction. At the end of 2015 the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will announce the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). In theory, this agreement should produce an association-wide economic integration. However, following the announcement, and for the foreseeable future, ASEAN member states will continue in significantly less than full regional economic integration. Why? Some observers believe that the AEC plans involve an "overly ambitious timeline and too many ill-thought-out initiatives." Others point to ASEAN's traditional aversion to legally binding agreements. While progress has been made in reducing or eliminating intra- ASEAN trade tariffs, substantial non-tariff barriers to trade persist. However, for most member states, the ASEAN market is relatively small while external markets, especially China, are growing rapidly. Objective:Allergic disease is multifactorial in origin. Because iron nutrition affects immune responses and maternal pregnancy weight gain impairs fetal iron delivery while increasing fetal demands for growth, the study examined maternal pregnancy weight gain, newborn iron status and an index of atopic disease, infant eosinophilia.Study Design:Within a larger prospective study of healthy newborns at risk for developing iron deficiency anemia, umbilical cord iron indicators were compared to infant eosinophil counts.Result:Infants who developed eosinophilia exhibited higher cord reticulocyte-enriched zinc protoporphyrin/heme ratio, P<0.05 and fewer cord ferritin values in the highest (best) quartile, P<0.05. If cord ferritin was in the upper three quartiles, the negative predictive value for infant eosinophilia was 90%. High maternal pregnancy weight gain predicted infant eosinophil counts, P<0.04, and contributed to cord ferritin predicting eosinophilia, P<0.003.Conclusion:Poor fetal iron status may be an additional risk factor for infant eosinophilia. Nephroptosis is a rare complication in renal transplantation, but one with significant associated risk. Due to non-specific clinical features, there may be a substantial delay in diagnosis and loss of the transplanted kidney due to renal pedicle thrombosis. We present a case of post-transplantation nephroptosis after simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant, which resulted in accelerated hypertension and reversible acute kidney injury >1 year after transplantation. OBJECTIVE Disease-associated T-cell autoreactivities are seen inmost type 1 diabetic patients and are thought to emerge before islet autoantibodies, but host factors that impact autoimmune elements remain uncertain. We assessed if adiposity and measures of insulin sensitivity impact T- and B-cell autoimmunity in children with insulin-requiring diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Insulin-requiring children and adolescents diagnosed between January 2004 and June 2008 were studied (n = 261): age 9.7 ± 4 years, 92% white, and 60% male. T-cell responses to 10 diabetes-associated antigens, β-cell autoantibodies (GADA, IA-2A, IAA, and ICA), BMI z score (BMIz), and waist percentile were measured at onset and 3 months later. RESULTS All but one subject had either T- or B-cell autoimmunity. Diabetes-associated T-cell autoreactivities were found in 92% of subjects. Higher amplitude T-cell autoreactivities to neuronal diabetes-associated autoantigens were seen in those with the highest BMIz quintile, BMI ≥85th percentile (P < 0.05), and waist circumference ≥85th percentile (P < 0.05). There were no relationships between the number of T-cell reactivities or T-cell diversity with adiposity measures or autoantibody number or type. Patients with positive T-cell reactivities but without autoantibodies had the highest BMIz (P = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Our observations link obesity and diabetes-related autoimmunity, suggesting an amplification of neuronal T-cell autoimmunity associated with adiposity and/or insulin resistance, with obesity-related inflammation possibly enhancing islet autoimmunity. In many animals, factors deposited by the mother into the egg control the earliest events in development of the zygote. These maternal RNAs and proteins play critical roles in oocyte development and the earliest steps of embryogenesis such as fertilization, cell division and embryonic patterning. Here, this article summarizes recent discoveries made on the maternal control of germline specification in zebrafish. Moreover, this review will discuss the major gaps remaining in our understanding of this process and highlight recent technical innovations in zebrafish, which allow tackling some of these questions in the near future. The nucleation hypothesis appears to explain widespread patterns of succession in tropical pastures, specifically the tendency for isolated trees to promote woody species recruitment. Still, the nucleation hypothesis has usually been tested explicitly for only short durations and in some cases isolated trees fail to promote woody recruitment. Moreover, at times, nucleation occurs in other key habitat patches. Thus, we propose an extension, the matrix discontinuity hypothesis: woody colonization will occur in focal patches that function to mitigate the herbaceous vegetation effects, thus providing safe sites or regeneration niches. We tested predictions of the classical nucleation hypothesis, the matrix discontinuity hypothesis, and a distance from forest edge hypothesis, in five abandoned pastures in Costa Rica, across the first 11 years of succession. Our findings confirmed the matrix discontinuity hypothesis: specifically, rotting logs and steep slopes significantly enhanced woody colonization. Surprisingly, isolated trees did not consistently significantly enhance recruitment; only larger trees did so. Finally, woody recruitment consistently decreased with distance from forest. Our results as well as results from others suggest that the nucleation hypothesis needs to be broadened beyond its historical focus on isolated trees or patches; the matrix discontinuity hypothesis focuses attention on a suite of key patch types or microsites that promote woody species recruitment. We argue that any habitat discontinuities that ameliorate the inhibition by dense graminoid layers will be foci for recruitment. Objectives: To determine the response of hepatic tissue to percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of liver tumors via MR elastography in a clinical setting using MRI and MR elastography.Methods: 51 Patients (28 m, 23f) underwent MWA of liver tumors (HCC: 20, metastasis: 31) and received MRI and MR elastography immediately before and 24 h after MWA. Retrospective analysis included pre- and post-ablative tumor extent, T1/T2 mapping and stiffness values as well as the duration and energy dose of the MWA session.Results: Total liver stiffness increased by 4.3% from 3.31 kPa to 3.45 kPa (p = 0.036). Total liver stiffness post-MWA significantly correlated with the duration of the MWA session (r = 0.369, p = 0.008). The higher the baseline tumor stiffness was, the more energy had to be applied in MWA (r = 0.391, p < 0.001) and the longer the duration of the session (r = 0.391, p = 0.007). Healthy parenchyma stiffness increased by 3.5% from 3.55 kPa to 3.68 kPa (p = 0.142) and was strongly influenced by the cumulative energy (r = 0.436, p < 0.001), the duration (r = 0.458, p < 0.001) and the energy intensity (r = 0.458, p < 0.001) of MWA. 43 patients had a technically successful ablation result (margin ≥ 5 mm). Those with successful ablation had increased ablation margin stiffness (5.3 kPa vs. 4.6 kPa, p = 0.26) and had received higher ablation intensity than those with unsuccessful ablation (5.73 kJ/min vs. 5.03 kJ/min, p = 0.002).Conclusion: Additional MRE may be used before and after MWA to assess treatment response and collateral tissue damage after MWA. The foreign policy style of Malaysia's fourth prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad (1981-2003), was controversial in many instances, but the country's influence and leverage in regional and global affairs had been remarkable for a country of its size. Despite initial outcries within Malaysia's neighbourhood, Mahathir's contributions to a wider East Asian regionalism are a lasting legacy. In the decade that has passed since Mahathir stepped down, Malaysia's international relations have rarely made the global headlines. Does the legacy of Mahathirism live on in Malaysia's foreign policy, or does the seeming absence of bold and pro-active initiatives indicate a substantive change of style and direction? The prime ministers since 2003, Abdullah Badawi and Najib Razak, have lacked Mahathir's hegemonic status in policy-making, and this has inevitably led to a de-personalisation and institutionalisation of foreign affairs. At the same time both administrations have continued Mahathir's practice of keeping foreign affairs out of the public domain as much as possible, in order to reduce the influence of domestic interests and debates on foreign policy matters. Context. Spacecraft observations have motivated the need for a refined description of the phase-space distribution function. Of particular importance is the pitch-angle diffusion coefficient that occurs in the Fokker-Planck transport equation. Aims. Simulations and analytical test-particle theories are compared to verify the diffusion description of particle transport, which does not allow for non-Markovian behavior. Methods. A Monte-Carlo simulation code was used to trace the trajectories of test particles moving in turbulent magnetic fields. From the ensemble average, the pitch-angle Fokker-Planck coefficient is obtained via the mean square displacement. Results. It is shown that, while excellent agreement with analytical theories can be obtained for slab turbulence, considerable deviations are found for isotropic turbulence. Abstract: The perpendicular diffusion coefficient is calculated by combining a recently developed Unified Nonlinear Transport (UNLT) theory with the Newton–Lorentz equation. The total perpendicular mean free path can be described as a combination of a guiding center contribution and a microscopic contribution. It is shown that the total mean free path depends strongly on the energy range of the turbulence power spectrum and on particle energy. Further, a slab/2D composite model is used to investigate the influence of each contribution to the total mean free path for a quasi-3D turbulence model. For pure 2D turbulence the UNLT reduces to the NLGC-theory. For pure slab turbulence the guiding center contribution is subdiffusive in accordance with simulations and the theorem on reduced dimensionality. Conversely, the microscopic contribution is non-zero, which has to be interpreted as normal diffusion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses the effects of Cambodian non-governmental organizations' (NGOs) reliance on foreign aid on the nation's peace-building process. The author focuses on the relationship between foreign donors and Cambodian civil society in order to examine the role of local actors in setting Cambodia's development agenda, donors' impact on Cambodians' attitudes towards the genocide that occurred under Cambodia's Khmer Rouge government, and the long-term prospects for peace in Cambodia. The effects of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT), officially known as the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), are discussed.

This retrospective study examined whether practice in computer-based tests (CBTs) in student registered nurse anesthetists improved scores on the National Certification Examination (NCE). A group of students with extensive practice in CBTs was compared with a group of students whose tests were administered primarily on paper. Groups were matched on age, grade point average (GPA), and gender (n = 73 each). Higher GPA was associated with higher NCE scores overall. Adjusted for GPA (with analysis of covariance), the mean NCE proficiency score (Φ) in the CBT group was 2.68 (95% confidence interval, 2.54-2. 82), which was higher than the mean score in the paper-based group of 2.36 (95% confidence interval, 2.22-2.50), with an effect size of 0.52. When subgroups were examined, CBT practice improved NCE scores only in those students with graduate GPA less than or equal to 3.50, with an effect size of 1.1. It was concluded that, controlling for GPA, student registered nurse anesthetists at a university with greater exposure to CBTs had higher scores on the NCE than a comparison group with less practice in CBTs. The standard theory of field-line random walk is based on the description of turbulence in the wave number space. The latter description takes into account the details of turbulence at small scales. Such details, however, are not important in the theory of random walking magnetic field lines. In the present paper we therefore use simple decorrelation models to estimate the field-line diffusion coefficient. Previous results are recovered as special limits.
