Identification of living undocumented individuals highlights the need for accurate, precise, and reproducible age estimation methods, especially in those cases involving minors. However, when their country of origin is unknown, or it can be only roughly estimated, it is extremely difficult to apply assessment policies, procedures, and practices that are accurate and child-sensitive. The main aim of this research is to optimize the correct classification of adults and minors by establishing new cut-off values for four different continents (Africa, America, Asia, and Europe). For this purpose, a vast sample of 10,701 orthopantomographs (OPTs) from four continents was evaluated. For determination and subsequent validation of the new third molar maturity index (I3M) cut-off values by world regions, a cross-validation by holdout method was used and contingency tables (confusion matrices) were generated. The lower third molar maturity indexes, from both left and right side (I3ML and I3MR) and the combination of both sides (I3ML_I3MR) were calculated. The new cut-off values, that aim to differentiate between a minor and an adult, with more than 74.00% accuracy for all populations were as follows (I3ML; I3MR; I3ML_I3MR, respectively): Africa = (0.10; 0.10; 0.10), America = (0.10; 0.09; 0.09), Asia = (0.15; 0.17; 0.14), and Europe = (0.09; 0.09; 0.09). The higher sensitivity (Se) was detected for the I3ML for male African people (91%) and the higher specificity (Sp) of all the parameters (I3ML; I3MR; I3ML_I3MR) for Europeans both male and female (> 91%). The original cut-off value (0.08) is still useful, especially in discriminating individuals younger than 18 years old which is the goal of the forensic methods used for justice. La intervención carroñera en restos humanos por parte de perros (Canis lupus familiaris) puede dificultar el proceso de identificación y el análisis de traumas perimortem. Se han publicado numerosos estudios científicos acerca de los daños provocados por perros en restos óseos, como consecuencia de consumo postmortem o de ataques letales. Sin embargo, escasean aquellos relativos al análisis de vestimentas asociadas a los restos humanos. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar patrones de daños causados por perros domésticos en tejidos textiles de uso común. Para ello, se utilizaron 45 sacos, de 20 × 30 cm cada uno, elaborados manualmente con tres tipos distintos de tejidos textiles (15 por textil): bistrech, mezclilla y poliéster, con una densidad de 40,84; 57,95 y 31,46 hilos por cm², respectivamente. La muestra canina consistió en 15 ejemplares de diferente tamaño, edad y sexo, procedentes de la "Fundación Chile Mestizo" de Santiago (Chile). Se analizó, mediante análisis de la varianza, la relación entre tipo de textil y presencia de daños y, posteriormente, se calculó la frecuencia de daños observados por tipo de textil. Para ello se utilizó el programa estadístico Minitab 19. Según los resultados obtenidos, se identificaron cuatro tipos de patrón: punción y masticación, presentes en el 62% y 75% de los casos, respectivamente; perforación y el daño de hole and tear, con una frecuencia del 91% de los casos analizados. Scavenging of human remains by dogs can make the process of identification and analysis of perimortem trauma difficult. Numerous scientific studies have been published about the damage caused to osseous remains by dogs due to postmortem consumption or lethal attacks. However, few studies deal with the issue of the analysis of clothing associated with human remains. The purpose of this investigation was to identify patterns of damage caused by domestic dogs to commonly used, woven textiles. Forty-five cloth bags were used (20 × 30 cm each), made by hand with three different types of woven textile (15 of each textile): stretch (polyester with elastic), denim, and polyester, with a thickness of 40.84, 57.95, and 31.46 threads per cm², respectively. The canine sample consisted of 15 dogs, differing in size, age, and sex, coming from the "Fundación Chile Mestizo," in Santiago, Chile. Through analysis of variance, researchers examined the relationship between the type of textile and presence of damage, and later, they calculated the frequency of damage according to type of textile. The statistical program Minitab 19 was used to do this. According to the results, four types of patterns were identified: puncture and mastication, present in 62% and 75% of the cases, respectively; perforation; and "hole and tear" damage in 91% of the analyzed cases. Regarding the relationship between textile type and frequency of damage, researchers found that the thickness and weight of the textile are directly connected to the type of damage. Estimation of age of majority has important applications in the forensic daily practice because of the increasing demand for age estimates of unaccompanied minors. Diagnostic accuracy of I3M to assess legal adult age of 18 years has been already tested in several specific population samples. The aim of this work was to compare the available data about sensitivity and specificity of the third molar maturity index (I3M) from five different regional groups' radiographic samples to study possible ethnical difference. For this purpose, a sample of 6157 orthopantomograms (OPGs), coming from 15 countries, was analysed. Data about sensitivity and specificity were pooled using a bivariate modelling approach. The one-way MANOVA analysis was applied to assess the likelihood that sensitivity and specificity of the five regional groups are sampled from the same population. The result of the one-way MANOVA showed that both sensitivity and specificity did not depend from the regional groups. The obtained sensitivity was 84% (95% CI: 82% and 85%), and its specificity was 94% (95% CI: 93% and 95%). Based on these results, the I3M was a useful statistical tool to identify whether a subject has reached the legal age of 18 years old, regardless of his or her ethnicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To assess the use of telemedicine with phone-call visits as a practical tool to follow-up with patients affected by urological benign diseases, whose clinic visits had been cancelled during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Patients were contacted via phone-call and a specific questionnaire was administered to evaluate the health status of these patients and to identify those who needed an "in-person" ambulatory visit due to the worsening of their condition. Secondarily, the patients' perception of a potential shift towards a "telemedicine" approach to the management of their condition and to indirectly evaluate their desire to return to "in-person" clinic visits. Results: 607 were contacted by phone-call. 87.5% (531/607) of the cases showed stability of the symptoms so no clinic in-person or emergency visits were needed. 81.5% (495/607) of patients were more concerned about the risk of contagion than their urological condition. The median score for phone visit comprehensibility and ease of communication of exams was 5/5; whilst patients' perception of phone visits' usefulness was scored 4/5. 53% (322/607) of the interviewees didn't own the basic supports required to be able to perform a real telemedicine consult according to the required standards. Conclusion: Telemedicine approach limits the number of unnecessary accesses to medical facilities and represents an important tool for the limitation of the risk of transmission of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. However, infrastructures, health workers and patients should reach out to a computerization process to allow a wider diffusion of more advanced forms of telemedicine, such as televisit. Textiles damage analysis is a very valuable tool in forensic investigations. However, to date, very little research has been carried out to understand the impact of bullet causing damages to clothing. According to the review of the most recent scientific papers, the frictional heating and crushing action of a bullet passing through synthetic fibres cause a unique transformation in their ends called mushroom-shaped morphology. In this study, the textile remains of six individuals executed during the first decade of the Chilean military dictatorship period (1973–1990) were analysed. The purpose was to examine their clothing in order to describe the fibre defects in the bullet holes. The fibres were directly observed using two different models of stereomicroscopy (MZ16A and EZ4D, Leica Microsystem Ltd., Wetzlar, Germany) and through a combination of transmitted, oblique and co-axial illumination (with Leica DFC500 Digital Camera), at × 230 and at a resolution of up to 840 Lp/mm. The mushroom-shaped morphology, along with rupturing of yarns, fibrillation or splitting of fibres, was observed in the bullet holes. Although the mushroom-shaped is a useful pattern for bullet hole identification in synthetic fibres, further research needs to be performed for developing a sounder interpretational framework of this type of forensic evidence. The Bayesian approach is being a fundamental tool in forensic and legal field where inferences and decisions are made. In this study, a full Bayesian calibration model was developed to make probabilistic inferences about age estimation in a reference sample of 891 periapical X-rays of upper and lower canines. These teeth belonged to both deceased and living adult subjects, aged between 20 and 86 years, coming from five different countries (Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Japan and Mexico). For this purpose, the narrowing of pulp chamber due to the apposition of secondary dentine was analysed by means of the pulp/tooth area ratio. To determine the agreement of the method, intra- and inter-observer differences for measuring process were calculated by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis. Observer error tests showed excellent agreement between observers and between repeated assessments. According to the results of the ANCOVA, neither nationality nor sex was associated to the secondary dentine apposition while it is associated with individual's age. The results of the present study indicated that the concept of probability is intrinsically linked to the assessment of age in a forensic context, and the Bayesian approach could be considered a robust tool to overtake the bias generated by traditional regression models, thus helping the decision-making process in a legal framework. It is common opinion that traditional approaches used to interpret and model users' choice behaviour in innovative contexts may lead to neglecting numerous nonquantitative factors that may affect users' perceptions and behaviours. Indeed, psychological factors, such as attitudes, concerns, and perceptions may play a significant role which should be explicitly modelled. By contrast, collecting psychological factors could be a time and cost consuming activity, and furthermore, real-world applications must rely on theoretical paradigms which are able to easily predict choice/market fractions. The present paper aims to investigate the above-mentioned issues with respect to an innovative automotive technology based on the after-market hybridization of internal combustion engine vehicles. In particular, three main research questions are addressed: (i) whether and how users' characteristics and attitudes may affect users' behaviour with respect to new technological (automotive) scenarios (e.g., after-market hybridization kit); (ii) how to better "grasp" users' attitudes/concerns/perceptions and, in particular, which is the most effective surveying approach to observe users' attitudes; (iii) to what extent the probability of choosing a new automotive technology is sensitive to attitudes/concerns changes. The choice to install/not install the innovative technology was modelled through a hybrid choice model with latent variables (HCMs), starting from a stated preferences survey in which attitudes were investigated using different types of questioning approaches: direct questioning, indirect questioning, or both approaches. Finally, a comparison with a traditional binomial logit model and a sensitivity analysis was carried out with respect to the instrumental attributes and the attitudes. Obtained results indicate that attitudes are significant in interpreting and predicting users' behaviour towards the investigated technology and the HCM makes it possible to easily embed psychological factors into a random utility model/framework. Moreover, the explicit simulation of the attitudes allows for a better prediction of users' choice with respect to the Logit formulation and points out that users' behaviour may be significantly affected by acting on users' attitudes. This work aims to assess the validity of the cut-off value (0.08) of the third molar maturity index (I3M) for discriminating minors from adults in Sardinian population. A sample of 336 digital panoramic radiographs of healthy Sardinian children and young minors (165 females and 171 males), aged between 15 and 23 years (mean age, 19.35 years in females and 18.80 years in males), was retrospectively evaluated. The left lower third molars were analysed by applying a specific cut-off value of 0.08 determined by Cameriere et al. in 2008. The reliability and reproducibility of the test was also studied: the intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were 0.91 (95% CI, 0.89-0.93) and 0.88 (95% CI, 0.86-0.90), for the intra- and inter-observer reliability, respectively. The I3M gradually decreased as the real age gradually increased in both sexes. According to the pooled results of the diagnostic test, the accuracy (ACC) was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.82-0.89); the proportion of correctly classified subjects (Se = sensitivity) was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.76-0.86); and specificity (Sp = specificity) was 0.95 (95% CI, 0.89-0.97). The positive predictive values (PPV) and the negative predictive values (NPVs) were 0.97 (95% CI, 0.94-0.99) and 0.70 (95% CI, 0.62-0.77). The LR+ and the LR− were 17.12 (95% CI, 7.27 to 40.36) and 0.19 (95% CI, 0.14 to 0.25). In spite of this, significant differences in the early mineralisation of the third molar were found between sexes as well as in the results of the diagnostic test, showing a better sensitivity in males than in females. The results showed that, although the third molar teeth are highly variable in development, and with differences between females and males as compare to other teeth, the I3M is a reliable method to distinguish between minors and adults even in such a genetic isolate population. The possibility of upgrading conventional vehicles to hybrid electric vehicles has recently gained considerable interest. Among the diverse options for hybridization, researchers of the Energy and Propulsion Laboratory at the University of Salerno (Italy) have patented a system based on the electrification of the rear wheels in front-wheel-drive vehicles by adopting in-wheel motors and adding a lithium-ion battery, which is rechargeable via plug-in and solar mode. The technology integrates various components, in-vehicle Intelligent Transportation Systems and advanced on-line management algorithms. With respect to the proposed technological context, this paper uses a real case study to investigate the potential market penetration, the achievable environmental benefits and relevant policy issues. To this aim, the paper first analyses the main behavioral determinants that may affect users' perception of this new technology, then specifies and calibrates an installation choice model, and finally develops bottom-up methodology to estimate the environmental benefits to be obtained from different commercialization scenarios. The proposed methodology was applied to the city of Salerno and the achievable benefits were compared to those obtainable through the implementation of traditional transport policies. This study provides regression equations for estimation of age of infants from the dimensions of their developing deciduous teeth. The sample comprises 97 individuals of known sex and age (62 boys, 35 girls), aged between 2 days and 1,081 days. The age-estimation equations were obtained for the sexes combined, as well as for each sex separately, thus including 'sex' as an independent variable. The values of the correlations and determination coefficients obtained for each regression equation indicate good fits for most of the equations obtained. The 'sex' factor was statistically significant when included as an independent variable in seven of the regression equations. However, the 'sex' factor provided an advantage for age estimation in only three of the equations, compared to those that did not include 'sex' as a factor. Objective To determine the association among prostate cancer gene 3 ( PCA3) score, Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System ( PI- RADS) grade and Gleason score, in a cohort of patients with elevated prostate-specific antigen ( PSA), undergoing magnetic resonance imaging/ultrasonography fusion software-based targeted prostate biopsy ( TBx) after a previous negative randomised 'standard' biopsy ( SBx). Patients and Methods In all, 282 patients who underwent TBx after previous negative SBx and a PCA3 urine assay, were enrolled. The associations between PCA3 score/ PI- RADS and PCA3 score/Gleason score were investigated by K-means clustering, a receiver operating characteristic analysis and binary logistic regression. Results The PCA3 score difference for the negative vs positive TBx cohorts was highly statistically significant. A 1-unit increase in the PCA3 score was associated to a 2.4% increased risk of having a positive TBx result. A PCA3 score of >80 and a PI- RADS grade of ≥4 were independent predictors of a positive TBx. The association between the PCA3 score and PI- RADS grade was statistically significant (the median PCA3 score for PI- RADS grade groups 3, 4, and 5 was 58, 104, and 146, respectively; P = 0.006). A similar pattern was detected for the relationship between the PCA3 score and Gleason score; an increasing PCA3 score was associated with a worsening Gleason score (median PCA3 score equal to 62, 105, 132, 153, 203, and 322 for Gleason Score 3+4, 4+3, 4+4, 4+5, 5+4, and 5+5, respectively; P < 0.001). Conclusion TBx improved PCA3 score diagnostic and prognostic performance for prostate cancer. The PCA3 score was directly associated both with biopsy Gleason score and PI- RADS grade: notably, in the 'indeterminate' PI- RADS grade 3 subgroup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the recent commercial success of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles their market share is still insufficient to produce either a significant impact on energy consumption on a global basis or a profitable automotive segment. In this context, the possibility of upgrading conventional vehicles to hybrid electric vehicles is gaining increasing interest. To this aim this paper investigated and modelled the intention to install an after-market hybridization solar-kit (HySolarKit) in order to ascertain the main behavioural determinants of the choice process and set up an operational model with which to estimate the market potential of such technology. In particular, two behavioural stages of the choice process were analysed and modelled: (i) the intention to adopt the HySolarKit; (ii) the choice to install the HySolarKit. Both issues were addressed through ad hoc stated preference surveys carried out in two different Italian cities, and through the specification and the calibration of discrete choice models based on the behavioural paradigm of random utility theory. Different modelling solutions (homoscedastic and heteroscedastic) were compared in terms of goodness-of-fit and sensitivity to level-of-service attributes. The results showed the technological potential of the HySolarKit, and that both behavioural stages may be effectively modelled through random utility theory. Estimation results allowed an interpretation of the main determinants of the investigated phenomena, making it possible to quantify the potential effects and the concerns towards such a green solution, and making it possible to draw up operative marketing strategies. In particular, the intention to adopt the kit mainly depends on socio-economic factors as well as activity-related and attitudinal attributes, whereas the probability of installing the kit is greatly affected, to the same extent, by installation cost, the charging cost and the weekly mileage driven. This paper aims to investigate the application of meta-heuristic optimisation methods to Network Signal Setting Design. The adopted approaches are (i) three step optimisation, in which first the stage matrix (stage composition and sequence), the green timings at each single junction are optimised, then the node offsets are computed in three successive steps; (ii) two step optimisation, in which the stage matrix is defined at a first step, then the green timings and the node offsets are computed at a second step. In both approaches the stage matrix optimisation is carried out through explicit complete enumeration. In the first approach multi-criteria optimisation is followed for single junction signal setting design (green timings), whilst the coordination (node offsets) is approached through mono-criterion optimisation, as well as for the synchronisation (green timings and offsets) in the second approach. A new traffic flow model mixing CTM and PDM has been applied. This model allows to explicitly represent horizontal queuing phenomena as well as dispersion along a link. Some meta-heuristic algorithms (i.e. Genetic Algorithms, Hill Climbing and Simulated Annealing) are investigated in order to solve the two problems. The proposed strategies are applied to two different layouts (a two junction arterial vs. a four junction network) and their effectiveness is evaluated by comparing the obtained results with those from benchmark approaches implementing mono-criterion optimisation only. In this paper, the effects of a inter-urban carsharing program on users’ mode choice behaviour were investigated and modelled through specification, calibration and validation of different modelling approaches founded on the behavioural paradigm of the random utility theory. To this end, switching models conditional on the usually chosen transport mode, unconditional switching models and holding models were investigated and compared. The aim was threefold: (i) to analyse the feasibility of a inter-urban carsharing program; (ii) to investigate the main determinants of the choice behaviour; (iii) to compare different approaches (switching vs. holding; conditional vs. unconditional); (iv) to investigate different modelling solutions within the random utility framework (homoscedastic, heteroscedastic and cross-correlated closed-form solutions). The set of models was calibrated on a stated preferences survey carried out on users commuting within the metropolitan area of Salerno, in particular with regard to the home-to-work trips from/to Salerno (the capital city of the Salerno province) to/from the three main municipalities belonging to the metropolitan area of Salerno. All of the involved municipalities significantly interact each other, the average trip length is about 30 km a day and all are served by public transport. The proposed carsharing program was a one-way service, working alongside public transport, with the possibility of sharing the same car among different users, with free parking slots and free access to the existent restricted traffic areas. Results indicated that the inter-urban carsharing service may be a substitute of the car transport mode, but also it could be a complementary alternative to the transit system in those time periods in which the service is not guaranteed or efficient. Estimation results highlighted that the conditional switching approach is the most effective one, whereas travel monetary cost, access time to carsharing parking slots, gender, age, trip frequency, car availability and the type of trip (home-based) were the most significant attributes. Elasticity results showed that access time to the parking slots predominantly influences choice probability for bus and carpool users; change in carsharing travel costs mainly affects carpool users; change in travel costs of the usually chosen transport mode mainly affects car and carpool users. Objective To evaluate the variability in prostate cancer gene 3 ( PCA3) score over time in men with elevated serum prostate-specific antigen ( PSA) levels who are undergoing first or repeat prostate biopsy. Patients and Methods A total of 360 men from two Italian institutions who had undergone at least two PCA3 assessments were selected. Of these, 97.5% were scheduled for first or repeat prostate biopsy because of elevated PSA level and/or positive digital rectal examination ( DRE). We compared the PCA3 scores in men with a negative biopsy (normal parenchyma, benign prostatic hyperplasia [ BPH], chronic prostatitis, high-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia [ HG-PIN]) with those in men with a positive biopsy. We evaluated PCA3 repeated measures biological variability and its possible association with basic patient characteristics (age, family history of prostate cancer, DRE, prostate volume, BPH, prostatitis and HG-PIN). Three different thresholds were used to evaluate the possible changes in risk class: the standard threshold (a PCA3 score of 35), a US Food and Drug Administation-approved PCA3 threshold of 25 and a threshold selected based on our previous research which was a PCA3 score of 50. Results The PCA3 scores varied significantly ( P < 0.001) when comparing men with a negative biopsy with those with a positive biopsy (median [range] PCA3 score: 25 [2-276] vs 43 [7-331]). There was no significant difference in PCA3 scores in men with chronic prostatitis and HG-PIN compared with other men with negative biopsies. The median (range) time between the two PCA3 assessments was 16.2 (3-53.7) months. No association was found between PCA3 repeated measures modifications and age, family history of prostate cancer, DRE, BPH, prostatitis, HG-PIN and use of 5-α-reductase inhibitors. The variability of PCA3 scores on repeated measures confirmed the risk class for about 80% of patients; of the remaining 20% of patients, the risk class was upgraded in two thirds and downgraded in one third. Conclusion PCA3 score can be considered a stable marker over time in most cases but there is a group of men among whom there is clinically notable risk class change. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate whether and how multiple-criteria decision analysis, based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach, may support the participatory process of the public in the whole transportation planning process, especially in strategic planning and at the initial stages during which planning options are drawn up and the public are rarely involved. The AHP makes it possible to consider the multiple objectives of decision makers and allows public engagement to be deliberative, participatory, dynamic and flexible, which is independent of planning options. The method was specified and calibrated starting from a specific stated preferences survey, and its parameters were calibrated with respect to two scenarios: without any transport options and with real transport options. Different criteria (accessibility, travel safety, comfort, environment, landscape), subcriteria and corresponding indicators (qualitative, quantitative and dichotomous) were considered, and reciprocal weights were calibrated. Finally, a real planning scenario was implemented. Calibration results gave interesting insights into the public desires and expectations, made it possible to rank the different chosen criteria and sub-criteria and to understand the biases between preferences stated with or without transport options. The article presents a study which suggests a multi-scale modelling architecture for the estimation of modal demand flows in the railway serving the Salerno University. It states that the study is divided into various areas including the possible municipalities affected, those directly affected, and an area influenced by the project. Results show that the travel demand flows are inconsistent with the Provincial Transport Plan data.

Objective To determine whether histological chronic prostatitis and high-grade prostate intra-epithelial neoplasia ( HG-PIN) influence the prostate cancer gene 3 ( PCA3) score in Italian patients with an elevated prostate-specific antigen ( PSA) level and a negative digital rectal examination ( DRE) who were undergoing a first or repeat prostate biopsy., Patients and Methods A urinary PCA3 test was prospectively performed in 432 consecutive patients who were admitted to Gradenigo Hospital ( Turin, Italy) between January and December 2011 and scheduled for first or repeat prostate biopsy as a result of an elevated PSA level and negative DRE., A comparison of the PCA3 score and patients with a negative biopsy (normal parenchyma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, chronic prostatitis, HG-PIN) or positive biopsy was performed., Results PCA3 median (range) scores varied significantly ( P < 0.001) in men with a negative vs positive biopsy : 33 (2-212) and 66 (5-324), respectively., By contrast, men with chronic prostatitis and HG-PIN showed no significant difference with respect to PCA3 score compared to other negative biopsy patients., No correlation was found between the number of positive cores for chronic prostatitis, HG-PIN and PCA3 score., Of all patients with a positive biopsy, 23 (20%) of 114 men had a PCA3 score ≤35., In total, 79 (40%) of 197 men with a negative biopsy (normal parenchyma and benign prostatic hyperplasia), 24 (37.5%) of 64 men with chronic prostatitis and 19 (39.6%) of 48 men with HG-PIN had a PCA3 score >35., Conclusion At this early stage of clinical evaluation, cancer specificity of the urinary PCA3 test appears to be maintained in the face of chronic prostatitis and HG-PIN. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of three methods for age estimation in children: the measurements of open apices in tooth roots (T), the ratio between the total area of carpal bones and epiphyses of the ulna and radius (HW), and the combined method (THW). The sample consisted of 288 Caucasian Italian children (152 boys and 136 girls) aged between 5 and 15 years. Accuracy was determined as the difference between estimated age and chronological age, and accuracy was assessed by analyzing individuals' orthopantomograms and hand-wrist radiographs. Accuracies were 0.41 years for girls and 0.54 years for boys with the THW method; for the HW method, 1.00 years for girls and 0.92 years for boys; and for the T method, 0.62 years for girls and 0.71 years for boys. Abstract: This paper aims to investigate and model airport choice behaviour in a multi-airport region in order to analyze some facets of the phenomenon scantily treated in the literature: the effects of type of flight connection, trip duration and departure date. The analysis made use of discrete choice random utility models estimated on an specific stated preferences survey. Homoscedastic and heteroscedastic formulations were estimated, different correlation structures were tested, non-linear effects of level of service attributes were investigated, and sensitivity analyses were performed. All was carried out in a hitherto uninvestigated Italian multi-airport region (Campania, southern Italy). Major findings were: (i) access time, airfare, age, experience and income proved to be the most significant variables; (ii) non-linear transformation of access time and frequency (for direct flights) and of in-flight travel time (for connecting flights) appreciably improved models goodness-of-fit; (iii) correlation criteria based on geographical considerations or on operating airlines should be investigated; (iv) airport choices if only connecting flights are available cannot effectively be simulated through models estimated for direct flights; (v) airport choice probabilities may be significantly different as travel plans change; (vi) though Mixed Multinomial Logit and Cross-Nested Logit models statistically outperformed closed form formulations, Multinomial Logit model continue to be an effective modelling solution. Abstract: Accurate age estimation has always been a problem for forensic scientists, and apposition of secondary dentine is often used as an indicator of age. Since 2004, in order to examine patterns of secondary dentine apposition, Cameriere et al. have been extensively studying the pulp/tooth area ratio of the canines by panoramic and peri-apical X-ray images. The main aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between age and age-related changes in the pulp/tooth area ratio in monoradicular teeth, with the exception of canines, by orthopantomography. A total of 606 orthopantomograms of Spanish white Caucasian patients (289 women and 317 men), aged between 18 and 75 years and coming from Bilbao and Granada (Spain), was analysed. Regression analysis of age of monoradicular teeth indicated that the lower premolars were the most closely correlated with age. An ANCOVA did not show significant differences between men and women. Multiple regression analysis, with age as dependent variable and pulp/tooth area ratio as predictor, yielded several formulae. R 2 ranged from 0.69 to 0.75 for a single lower premolar tooth and from 0.79 to 0.86 for multiple lower premolar teeth. Depending on the available number of premolar teeth, the mean of the absolute values of residual standard error, at 95% confidence interval, ranged between 4.34 and 6.02 years, showing that the pulp/tooth area ratio is a useful variable for assessing age with reasonable accuracy. Accurate age estimation has always been a problem for forensic scientists, and apposition of secondary dentine is often used as an indicator of age. Cameriere et al. studied the pulp/tooth area ratio by peri-apical X-ray images of the canines, to observe the apposition of secondary dentine. The present study examines the application of this technique in a Mexican identified sample coming from the Department of Physical Anthropology of the INAH, at Mexico City. The main aim of this work is to test the reliability of this method in a skeletal sample of a specific population, different from the samples used for its development. The obtained regression model explained 96.2% of total variance ( R2 = 0.962) with a standard error of estimate of 1.909 and a standard deviation of 1.947. Abstract: Estimation of age at death is an unavoidable step in the process of human identification, both in forensic practice and in the anthropological and palaeopathological study of skeletal remains. In several cases, in which medical or demographic records are completely lacking, a reliable estimation of the age at death becomes very important. Skeletal remains from archaeological contexts suffer from several biasing factors such as post-mortem changes, taphonomy and various burial practices depending on age, sex and social status of the deceased persons. Currently, anthropological methods of age determination reveal several possibilities of inaccuracy. Of all the body parts used in age estimation, teeth are the least affected by any taphonomic process. Although there are many dental methods for age at death estimation, some of them are very complex and/or destructive and they are not normally used in anthropology. However, study of the apposition of secondary dentine by examining peri-apical X-rays of canines is beginning to supply very interesting results. The aim of this work was to test Cameriere’s method on a large sample of historical subjects from several cemeteries in Spain and Italy. The Spanish sample belongs to the Medieval cemetery of La Torrecilla (Arenas del Rey, Granada) and is housed in the Laboratory of Anthropology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Granada. The Italian samples come from the Medieval cemeteries of Comacchio (Ferrara) and Castel S. Pietro (Bologna). In order to test the reliability of Cameriere’s method, age estimations of canines were compared with the mean ranges of age of the most commonly applied anthropological methods such as tooth wear changes in the pubic symphysis or the metamorphosis of the auricular surface of the ilium. Tests on these Middle Ages cemeteries produced satisfactory results, indicating that Cameriere’s method is a reliable tool in determining age at death in skeletal remains of archaeological context. Abstract: Usually, discrete choice analysis as regards a transportation system is based on random utility theory. Recently, a different approach to choice analysis, based on Artificial Neural Network (actually a multilayer feedforward network—MLFFN) models, has been proposed by several researchers. Such modelling approach can address three main demand simulation issues (trip generation, trip distribution and modal split) and has shown good predictive capability. Most of the papers deal with extra-urban (inter-city or intra-regional) trips and they are calibrated on aggregate data, simulating demand flows, results have been compared with regressive models. An alternative and more stimulating approach can be followed up by using disaggregate data, as only one paper does, to simulate single-user choice. The aim of this paper is twofold, first to describe the main step towards the successful application of MLFFNs to support travel demand analysis, and second to show that they can be fruitfully applied to analyse transportation mode choice. A deep analysis has been carried out to address each of the major issues needed to make operational an MLFFN. The proposed approach relies on disaggregated (revealed preferences survey data-sets) data taken from two different case studies. The two case studies focus on medium distance intercity journeys, and allow to investigate mode choice for two different trip purposes and two different geographical contexts: journey-to-work of commuters within the Italian region of Veneto and journey-to-study of students towards the rural location of the University of Salerno. MLFFNs performances have been compared with the most effective and advanced closed-form Random Utility Models (RUMs) that can be calibrated on the same survey data-sets. Models validation and comparison have been carried out by using indices commonly used in MLFFNs or RUMs applications, and by introducing many others expressly defined to aid results interpretation. This paper proposes a hybrid traffic flow model able to support the implementation of traffic management strategies in the presence of human-driven and connected vehicles. The model is based on the combination of two models: an aggregate model (the cell transmission model) and a disaggregate model (the cellular automata model). The model was tested considering three main layouts, namely a ring-shaped arc, a signalised link, and a grid network with four origins and four destinations, and then calibrated on real data. The model was also applied in the presence of connected vehicles. Our results point out the model's local consistency in terms of wave propagation and its suitability with respect to the benchmark models as well as in the presence of connected vehicles. Objectives: The aims of this study are to develop and validate a clinical decision support system based on demographics, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), microRNA (miRNA), and MRI for the detection of prostate cancer (PCa) and clinical significant (cs) PCa, and to assess if this system performs better compared to MRI alone. Methods: This retrospective, multicenter, observational study included 222 patients (mean age 66, range 46-75 years) who underwent prostate MRI, miRNA (let-7a-5p and miR-103a-3p) assessment, and biopsy. Monoparametric and multiparametric models including age, PSA, miRNA, and MRI outcome were trained on 65% of the data and then validated on the remaining 35% to predict both PCa (any Gleason grade [GG]) and csPCa (GG ≥ 2 vs GG = 1/negative). Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value (NPV), and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated. Results: MRI outcome was the best predictor in the monoparametric model for both detection of PCa, with sensitivity of 90% (95%CI 73–98%) and NPV of 93% (95%CI 82–98%), and for csPCa identification, with sensitivity of 91% (95%CI 72–99%) and NPV of 95% (95%CI 84–99%). Sensitivity and NPV of PSA + miRNA for the detection of csPCa were not statistically different from the other models including MRI alone. Conclusion: MRI stand-alone yielded the best prediction models for both PCa and csPCa detection in biopsy-naïve patients. The use of miRNAs let-7a-5p and miR-103a-3p did not improve classification performances compared to MRI stand-alone results. Clinical relevance statement: The use of miRNA (let-7a-5p and miR-103a-3p), PSA, and MRI in a clinical decision support system (CDSS) does not improve MRI stand-alone performance in the detection of PCa and csPCa. Magnesium-based batteries represent one of the successfully emerging electrochemical energy storage chemistries, mainly due to the high theoretical volumetric capacity of metallic magnesium (i.e., 3833 mAh cm−3 vs. 2046 mAh cm−3 for lithium), its low reduction potential (−2.37 V vs. SHE), abundance in the Earth's crust (104 times higher than that of lithium) and dendrite-free behaviour when used as an anode during cycling. However, Mg deposition and dissolution processes in polar organic electrolytes lead to the formation of a passivation film bearing an insulating effect towards Mg2+ ions. Several strategies to overcome this drawback have been recently proposed, keeping as a main goal that of reducing the formation of such passivation layers and improving the magnesium-related kinetics. This manuscript offers a literature analysis on this topic, starting with a rapid overview on magnesium batteries as a feasible strategy for storing electricity coming from renewables, and then addressing the most relevant outcomes in the field of anodic materials (i.e., metallic magnesium, bismuth-, titanium- and tin-based electrodes, biphasic alloys, nanostructured metal oxides, boron clusters, graphene-based electrodes, etc.). A response by Stefano De Luca and colleagues to a letter to the editor about their article "Age-at-death estimation by pulp/tooth area ratio in canines: study of a 20th-century Mexican sample of prisoners to test Cameriere's method," in the 2011 issue, is presented.

The article discusses the benefits of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in detecting the clinical manifestation for prostate cancer. However, mpMRI is expensive, labor-intensive and time-consuming reporting, and is not feasible for screening purposes in men at risk of prostate cancer. The authors believe that both prostatectomy and fusion biopsy remain preferable in evaluating diagnostic accuracy of prostate cancer biomarkers.

Purpose: Phase III evidence showed that next-generation imaging (NGI), such as prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PSMA PET/CT), provides higher diagnostic accuracy than bone scan and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (conventional imaging, CI) in the primary staging of intermediate-to-high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) patients. However, due to the lack of outcome data, the introduction of NGI in routine clinical practice is still debated. Analysing the oncological outcome of patients upstaged by NGI (though managed according to CI) might shed light on this issue, supporting the design of randomised trials comparing the effects of treatments delivered based on NGI vs. CI. Methods: We prospectively enrolled a cohort of 100 biopsy-proven intermediate-to-high-risk PCa patients staged with CI and PSMA PET/CT (though managed according to the CI stage), to assess the frequency of the stage migration phenomenon. Stage migration was then assessed as biochemical recurrence—free survival (bRFS) predictor. Results: Three patients were lost at follow-up after imaging. PSMA PET/CT upstaged 26.8% of patients compared to CI, while it downstaged 6.1% of patients. Notably, 50% of patients excluded from surgery due to the presence of bone metastases at CI would have been treated with radical-intent approaches if PSMA PET/CT had guided the treatment choice. After a median follow-up of 6 months of surgically treated patients, 22/83 (26.5%) had biochemical recurrence (BCR). PSMA PET/CT-driven upstaging determined a significant risk increase for BCR (HR:3.41, 95%CI:1.21–9.56, p = 0.019). Including stage migration in a univariable and multivariable model identified PSMA PET/CT-upstaging as an independent predictor of bRFS. Conclusions: In conclusion, implementing NGI for staging purposes improves the prediction of bRFS. Although phase III evidence is still needed, this advancement suggests that NGI may better identify patients who would benefit from local treatments than those who may achieve better oncological outcomes through systemic treatment. Age estimation is one of the most important procedures for human identification. Cameriere et al. proposed a method for age estimation based on the analysis of the pulp/tooth ratio by using dental x-rays, based on the apposition of secondary dentine. The objective of this study was to develop linear regression models for age estimation, by means of the pulp/tooth ratio of mandibular canines and premolars using orthopantomographies (OPGs) in a Chilean population of adults of known age and sex. We analyzed 162 digital OPGs (67 men and 95 women) through ImageJ software, in order to measure these areas. By means of regression analysis, the possible interactions between age, sex and pulp / tooth ratio were studied. This relationship decreased regularly with age and ranged from 0.03 to 0.6 for premolars and 0.04 to 0.6 for canines, respectively. The best model of age estimation was for the relation of the lower left canine, obtaining a coefficient of determination of R2=8.7%. The mean absolute error, with a confidence interval of 95%, ranged between 5.6 and 5.72 years. The ANCOVA analysis showed no significant differences between men and women for age estimation, as well as for both sides of the oral cavity. According to the results, the pulp/tooth ratio is a reliable methodology for estimating age in adults. However, the results showed that, in actual cases, it is necessary to use additional estimation methods since, at least in the sample analyzed, the adjustment indicated by coefficients of determination showed uncertainty in age estimation produced by the linear regression models. The aim of this study is to present a personalized predictive model (PPM) with a machine learning (ML) system that is able to identify and classify patients with suspected prostate cancer (PCa) following mpMRI. We extracted all the patients who underwent fusion biopsy (FB) from March 2014 to December 2019, while patients from August 2020 to April 2021 were included as a validation set. The proposed system was based on the following four ML methods: a fuzzy inference system (FIS), the support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and self-organizing maps (SOMs). Then, a system based on fuzzy logic (FL) + SVM was compared with logistic regression (LR) and standard diagnostic tools. A total of 1448 patients were included in the training set, while 181 patients were included in the validation set. The area under the curve (AUC) of the proposed FIS + SVM model was comparable with the LR model but outperformed the other diagnostic tools. The FIS + SVM model demonstrated the best performance, in terms of negative predictive value (NPV), on the training set (78.5%); moreover, it outperformed the LR in terms of specificity (92.1% vs. 83%). Considering the validation set, our model outperformed the other methods in terms of NPV (60.7%), sensitivity (90.8%), and accuracy (69.1%). In conclusion, we successfully developed and validated a PPM tool using the FIS + SVM model to calculate the probability of PCa prior to a prostate FB, avoiding useless ones in 15% of the cases. In the last few years, forced and unregistered child marriage has widely increased into Turkey. The aim of this study was to test the accuracy of cut-off value of 0.08 by measurement of third molar index (I3M) in assessing legal adult age of 18 years. Digital panoramic images of 293 Turkish children and young adults (165 girls and 128 boys), aged between 14 and 22 years, were analysed. Age distribution gradually decreases as I3M increases in both girls and boys. For girls, the sensitivity was 85.9% (95% CI 77.1-92.8%) and specificity was 100%. The proportion of correctly classified individuals was 92.7%. For boys, the sensitivity was 94.6% (95% CI 88.1-99.8%) and specificity was 100%. The proportion of correctly classified individuals was 97.6%. The cut-off value of 0.08 is a useful method to assess if a subject is older than 18 years of age or not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to test the accuracy of cut-off value of 0.08 by measurement of third molar index (I3M) in assessing legal adult age of 18 years in a sample of Colombian children and young adults. Digital orthopantomographs of 288 Colombian children and young adults (163 girls and 125 boys), aged between 13 and 22 years, were analysed. Concordance correlation coefficient (ρc) and κ statistics (Cohen's Kappa coefficient) showed that repeatability and reproducibility are high for both intra- and inter-observer error. κ statistics for intra- and inter-observer agreement in decision on adult or minor was 0.913 and 0.877, respectively. Age distribution gradually decreases as I3M increases in both girls and boys. For girls, the sensitivity test was 95.1% (95% CI 87.1%-95%) and specificity was 93.8% (95% CI 87.1%-98.8%). The proportion of correctly classified individuals was 95.1%. For boys, the sensitivity test was 91.7% (95% CI 85.1%-96.8%) and specificity was 90.6% (95% CI 82.1%-97.8%). Objective: To determine if prostate health index (PHI), prostate cancer antigen gene 3 (PCA3) score, and percentage of free prostate-specific antigen (%fPSA) may be used to differentiate asymptomatic acute and chronic prostatitis from prostate cancer (PCa), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and high-grade prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (HG-PIN) in patients with elevated PSA levels and negative findings on digital rectal examination at repeat biopsy (re-Bx).Patients and Methods: In this prospective study, 252 patients were enrolled, undergoing PHI, PCA3 score, and %fPSA assessments before re-Bx. We used 3 multivariate logistic regression models to test the PHI, PCA3 score, and %fPSA as risk factors for prostatitis vs. PCa, vs. BPH, and vs. HG-PIN. All the analyses were performed for the whole patient cohort and for the "gray zone" of PSA (4-10ng/ml) cohort (171 individuals).Results: Of the 252 patients, 43 (17.1%) had diagnosis of PCa. The median PHI was significantly different between men with a negative biopsy and those with a positive biopsy (34.9 vs. 48.1, P<0.001), as for the PCA3 score (24 vs. 54, P<0.001) and %fPSA (11.8% vs. 15.8%, P = 0.012). The net benefit of using PCA3 and PHI to differentiate prostatitis and PCa was moderate, although it extended to a good range of threshold probabilities (40%-100%), whereas that from using %fPSA was negligible: this pattern was reported for the whole population as for the "gray zone" PSA cohort.Conclusion: In front of a good diagnostic performance of all the 3 biomarkers in distinguishing negative biopsy vs. positive biopsy, the clinical benefit of using the PCA3 score and PHI to estimate prostatitis vs. PCa was comparable. A sample of 38 Italian subjects (17 males and 21 females, mean age 8.2 ± 1.2 years, age range 7.2–8.8 years), who underwent active Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME), was studied to assess the reliability of an intraoral scan and the stability of palatal rugae. An intraoral scanner was used to obtain digital dental models pre- and post-treatment. A 3D-3D superimposition procedure was performed, and the Root Mean Square (RMS) of the distance calculated, to verify the forensic validity of this biometric technique. The Intra-Class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) values for the overall inter- and intra-observer agreement were 0.955 (95% CI: 0.931–0.980; p < 0.001) and 0.936 (95% CI: 0.918–0.975; p < 0.001), respectively. The values for TEM and rTEM tests were 0.423 and 1.2% for intra-observer; 0.637 and 1.7% for inter-observer. Results showed a statistically significant difference in RMS mean point-to-point distance between untreated control and treated subjects (p = 0.002). The RMS values to distinguish the pooled group (untreated and treated with RME) from any mismatch ranged from 0.42 to 0.61. This methodology was highly suitable to detect changes caused by RME. Several systems have been proposed in recent years for Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), ranging from personal (mobile application, on-board) navigation to VMS (Variable Message Signs). All these applications are essentially aimed at assisting the travelers in their travel choices by means of technologically dispatched information about traffic network structure and traffic conditions. It is well known that in ATIS applications one of the key issues to be addressed concerns the accuracy of the dispatched information, here intended as the ability of the system in supplying information that can be verified by the travelers to be correct (affected by a small error). The Monti 'e Prama site, made famous by the discovery of numerous large stone statues "The Monti 'e Prama giants", is a necropolis located in Sardinia, dated to the X - IX BC. The statues, all depicting men: archers, boxers and fencers, were found collapsed and fragmented, in the immediate vicinity of the burials. The sample of inhumated skeletons consists of 41 individuals, almost all males, who died when adolescents, young adults or, more rarely, mature. Neither children nor elders were present. An interesting question is whether the statues depicted the deceased or could have come from a temple located elsewhere. In this regard, the diagnosis of the age at death is an element of considerable importance, but the skeletal age is difficult to determine in this sample because of the bad state of preservation of the bones, while the teeth are well preserved and have allowed us to reconstruct a seriation in order to seniority on the basis of wear. Since tooth wear is a weak indicator of age, we also used a method based on the deposition of secondary dentine, by the pulp area/tooth area ratio calculation, which gets a greater precision. It was found that the correlation between the degree of wear and pulp area/tooth area ratio is somewhat low, indicating that the two processes, although both age-dependent, do not have a very similar trend. It was also noted that the method of pulp area / tooth area ratio tends to "make the individuals grow old" in cases of discrepancy, but in general confirms the young age of many adults and the absence of the elderly. In this sense, it confirms even the possibility of an association between the deceased and the statues of young athletes or warriors. The results of pulp area/tooth area ratio method, by moving the sample as a whole to ages slightly more advanced than those suggested by wear, offers the hypothesis that the community was characterized by alimentary habits involving a little wearing mastication activity. An image segmentation method is proposed for the automatic computation of the above mentioned area, and its implementation by a Matlab code is used to obtain a practical study on 70 canine radiographies of distinct known aged individuals. One of the most straightforward short term policies to mitigate urban traffic congestion is control through traffic lights at a single junction or network level. Existing approaches for single junction Signal Setting Design (SSD) can be grouped into two classes: Stage-based or Phase-based methods. Both these approaches take the lane marking layouts as exogenous inputs, but lane-based optimisation method may be found in literature, even though for isolated signal-controlled junctions only. The Network Signal Setting Design (NSSD) requires that offsets are introduced; a traffic flow model is also needed to compute total delay. All existing methods for NSSD follow a stage-based approach; these methods do not allow for stage matrix optimisation: it is shown that explicit enumeration of stage sequences is only practicable for very small networks. This paper focuses on Network Signal Setting Design introducing the so-called scheduled synchronisation that includes green scheduling, green timing and coordination into one optimisation problem. The paper proposes a stage-based method to solve such a problem, as an extension of the synchronisation method and the traffic flow model proposed in Cantarella et al. (2015): first a set of candidate stages is defined for each junction, then the stage sequences, the stage lengths and the offsets are optimised all together. To the authors’ knowledge, no other one-step optimisation method is available in literature for scheduled synchronisation. Objective To assess the performance capabilities of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp MRI), the prostate health index ( PHI) and prostate cancer antigen 3 ( PCA3) in predicting the presence of pathologically confirmed significant prostate cancer ( PCSPCa), according to the European Randomized Study of Screening Prostate Cancer definition, in a single cohort of patients who underwent radical prostatectomy ( RP) but who were eligible for active surveillance ( AS). Materials and Methods An observational retrospective study was performed in 120 patients with prostate cancer ( PCa), treated with robot-assisted RP but eligible for AS according to Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance criteria. Blood and urine specimens were collected before initial prostate biopsy for PHI and PCA3 measurements, respectively. In addition, all patients underwent mp MRI, preoperatively and 6-8 weeks after biopsy, with a 1.5T scanner using a four-to-five-channel phase array coil combined with an endorectal coin. mp MRI images were assessed and diagrams showing the prostate sextants were used to designate regions of abnormality within the prostate. Prostate findings were assigned to one of five categories according to Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System guidelines ( PI- RADS) and considered positive for PCa if final PI- RADS score was >3 and negative if ≤3. Results Pathologically confirmed reclassification was observed in 55 patients (45.8%). mp MRI showed good specificity and negative predictive value (0.61 and 0.73, respectively) for excluding PCSPCa compared with the PHI and PCA3. On multivariate analyses and after 1 000 bootstrapping resampling, the inclusion of both mp MRI and the PHI significantly increased the accuracy of the base model in predicting PCSPCa. For the prediction of PCSPCa, in particular, the base model had an area under the curve ( AUC) of 0.71 which significantly increased by 4% with the addition of the PHI ( AUC = 0.75; P < 0.01) and by 7% with the addition of mp MRI ( AUC = 0.78; P < 0.01). Decision-curve analysis showed that the multivariable model with mp MRI had the highest net benefit. Conclusion In a single cohort of patients who underwent RP but who were eligible for AS, mp MRI and, to a lesser extent, the PHI, had an important role in discriminating the presence of PCSPCa; both measures could therefore be useful in the selection and monitoring of patients undergoing AS. Abstract: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to test the accuracy of Cameriere''s European formula for age assessment in a large sample of Mexican children. The accuracy of dental age estimation was defined as how closely real age, measured as the difference between chronological age (CA) and dental age (DA), could be predicted. Digitalized orthopantomographs of 502 Mexican children (254 girls and 248 boys), aged between 5 and 15years, were analyzed. The seven left permanent mandibular teeth were evaluated using Cameriere''s method. Intra- and inter-observer variability for this technique was tested on a small random sample. Dental age was estimated for each individual and compared with known chronological age. Accuracy was measured as the difference between known chronological age and dental age and tested for significance with the mean prediction error (ME). The standard deviation and 95% confidence interval of the mean difference were also calculated. ME was 0.63years for girls and 0.52years for boys. ME was found to be slightly overestimated by 0.10years for girls, but was correctly estimated for boys with an accuracy of 0.00. In conclusion, this method is very useful and may be recommended for practical application both in clinical dentistry and forensic procedures on the Mexican population. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Sex assessment is one of the first essential steps in human identification, in both medico-legal cases and bio-archaeological contexts. Fragmentary human remains compromised by different types of burial or physical insults may frustrate the use of the traditional sex estimation methods, such as the analysis of the skull and pelvis. Currently, the application of discriminant functions to sex unidentified skeletal remains is steadily increasing. However, several studies have demonstrated that, due to variation in size and patterns of sexual dimorphism, discriminant functions are population-specific . In this study, in order to improve sex assessment from skeletal remains and to establish population-specific discriminant functions, the diagnostic values of the carpal bones were considered. A sample of 136 individuals (78 males, 58 females) of known sex and age was analyzed. They belong to a contemporary identified collection from the Laboratory of Physical Anthropology, Faculty of Medicine, UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City). The age of the individuals ranged between 25 and 85years. Between four and nine measurements of each carpal bone were taken . Independent t-tests confirm that all carpals are sexually dimorphic. Univariate measurements produce accuracy levels that range from 61.8% to 90.8%. Classification accuracies ranged between 81.3% and 92.3% in the multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis. In addition, intra- and inter-observer error tests were performed. These indicated that replication of measurements was satisfactory for the same observer over time and between observers. These results suggest that carpal bones can be used for assessing sex in both forensic and bio-archaeological identification procedures and that bone dimensions are population specific. The age of the individuals ranged between 22 and 85 years. Between four and nine measurements of each carpal bone were performed . Discriminant function statistics showed a sex assessment accuracy as high as 97.8%. Objectives To evaluate the role of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging in improving the predictive accuracy of the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance and Epstein criteria for active surveillance in prostate cancer. Methods A retrospective study was carried out with 126 prostate cancer patients treated with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, but eligible for active surveillance according to the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance criteria; 63 patients were also eligible according to the Epstein criteria. All patients underwent preoperative multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging, after at least 6 weeks from biopsy. The images from the multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging were assessed, and diagrams showing prostate sextants were used to designate regions of abnormalities within the prostate. Findings in the prostate were assigned to one of five categories according the Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System guidelines (v1.0), and considered positive for prostate cancer if the final Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System guidelines were >3 and negative if ≤3. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the gain in accuracy of the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance and Epstein criteria when added to multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging. Decision curve analysis was carried out to identify the net benefit of each model. Results The inclusion of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging to the Epstein criteria and the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance multivariate model significantly increased their accuracy in predicting pathologically-confirmed insignificant prostate cancer by 7% and 5%, respectively. At the decision curve analysis evaluation, the model including the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance criteria and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging improved the clinical risk prediction over the other models. Conclusions The present findings suggest that multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging is able to increase the predictive accuracy of Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance and Epstein criteria to identify prostate cancer patients eligible for active surveillance. Most of the existing Carsharing business models mainly rely on gasoline vehicles and diesel vehicles, but in recent years there has been a significant increase in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and a resurgence in electric vehicles (EVs). Within this framework, this paper investigates and models the choice to switch from a private car trip to a carsharing service available in peripheral parks as well as the propensity to choose an electric vehicle for such a service. In particular, three issues are addressed: (i) investigating and modelling the propensity to choose carsharing as a transport alternative within a neighbourhood residential carsharing business model; (ii) estimating the effect of also having an EV option available; (iii) measuring the “pure preference”, if any, in using electric vehicles over traditional ones, in a context excluding factors that may bias such users preference (e.g. purchase price, energy costs, recharging facilities etc). The analyses are based on a stated preferences survey undertaken on 600 car drivers entering the city centre of Salerno (Southern Italy), and on the estimation of a binomial Logit model with serial correlation. Results allow an interpretation of the main determinants of the short-term choice of carsharing services (i.e. without any car-ownership changes), give general behavioural insights, make it possible to quantify the “pure preference” for EV and the demand elasticity with regard to different pricing strategies of the carsharing services. Regenerative medicine is the branch of medicine that effectively uses stem cell therapy and tissue engineering strategies to guide the healing or replacement of damaged tissues or organs. A crucial element is undoubtedly the biomaterial that guides biological events to restore tissue continuity. The polymers, natural or synthetic, find wide application thanks to their great adaptability. In fact, they can be used as principal components, coatings or vehicles to functionalize several biomaterials. There are many leading centers for the research and development of biomaterials in Italy. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current state of the art on polymer research for regenerative medicine purposes. The last five years of scientific production of the main Italian research centers has been screened to analyze the current advancement in tissue engineering in order to highlight inputs for the development of novel biomaterials and strategies.
