Higher nitrite accumulation, which is challenging to achieve reliably, is always sought to obtain better nitrogen removal performance in traditional partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) process. This study developed a modified PN/A process by introducing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and endogenous metabolism. Advanced nitrogen removal performance of 95.5 % was achieved at a low C/N ratio of 2.7 under nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) fluctuations. Higher nitrate accumulation at lower NAR (70 ∼ 40 %) resulted in superior anammox contribution (60 ∼ 75 %) and nitrogen removal performance (93 ∼ 98 %). This was attributed to the higher nitrogen removal efficiency of the post-anoxic endogenous partial denitrification coupling anammox process, although the PN/A process occurring first possessed a faster anammox rate of 2.0 mg NH 4 +-N /(g VSS⋅h). The introduction of nitrate allowed more nitrite flow to anammox, promoting a high enrichment of anammox bacteria (Ca. Brocadia, 0.3 % to 2.8 %). Autotrophic nitrogen removal processes based on anammox are facing huge challenges of high effluent quality in wastewater treatment. In this study, a novel hybrid system of anammox coupled with heterotrophic endogenous metabolisms was developed in a single-stage bioreactor to treat real domestic wastewater. Complete nitrogen removal was achieved at a low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 2.8 and more than 95.2% nitrogen removal was maintained under an extremely low C/N ratio of 1.9. The nitrite shunt supplied by dual partial pathways (partial nitritation and endogenous partial denitratation) guaranteed the anammox activity with a high contribution to nitrogen removal above 60%. While endogenous denitrification (ED) and denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR) both participated in nitrate respiration, contributing more than 28% and 9% to nitrogen removal, respectively. The coexistence and enrichment of anammox bacteria (Ca. Brocadia, 0.9%), glycogen accumulating organisms (Ca. Competibacter, 6.4%) and phosphorus accumulating organisms (Dechloromonas , 3.9% and Ca. Accumulibacter, 0.7%) contributed to the co-metabolism of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The functional genes encoding the above metabolism were highly correlated with the dominant strains, indicating that the multiple pathways of carbon and nitrogen metabolism supported the continuous supply of electrons required for nitrogen removal. The application of partial nitritation-anammox (PNA) process suffers severe obstacles due to the instability of partial nitritation (PN) process. This study sought to evaluate the feasibility of endogenous partial denitratation (EPD) as a remediation or alternative to supply nitrite for the unstable PNA process. A novel strategy of optimal organics utilization through pre-anaerobic carbon storage and post-anoxic endogenous denitrification coupled with anammox was developed in a single-stage bioreactor treating actual municipal wastewater with low C/N (∼3.2). Specifically, the undesired NO 2 −/NH 4 + ratio (2.4 to 0.04) and nitrate accumulation were obtained by increasing the aeration rate (0.6 to 1.8 L/min) to simulate the PN instability. Delightedly, advanced nitrogen removal efficiency (92.1%) was maintained despite a dramatic decrease in nitrite accumulation ratio from 97.6% to 2.6%. This was attributed to the significant increase in anammox contribution to total nitrogen removal from 30.2% to 80.5%. The steady nitrite flux supplied from EPD coupled with PN (EPD contribution increased from 0 to 97.0%) was assumed to be the main reason for the continually increasing abundance and bioactivity of anammox bacteria. Both the anammox bacteria (1.5%, Ca. Brocadia) and glycogen accumulating organisms (6.0%, responsible for EPD) were enriched and coexisted stably in the single reactor. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) to total inorganic nitrogen ratios (C/N) fluctuations under mainstream conditions has a crucial influence on the performance of partial nitrification-anammox (PNA) systems. In this study, a PNA sequencing batch reactor was applied for real municipal wastewater treatment with a continuous decrease in C/N (4.3 to 1.4). The results showed that with the decrease of C/N, the nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) decreased from 94.1% to 60.7%, and nitrogen removal by endogenous denitrification was attenuated. However, the nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) significantly increased from 43.8% to 91.5%, which was attributed to the enhanced performance of PNA under aerobic conditions and additional nitrite provided by endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) for anammox under anoxic conditions. Glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) that dominated the EPD process increased remarkably from 0.42% to 2.78% exhibiting a competitive advantage over phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) at low organic loads. Co-existence of highly enriched anammox bacteria (0.91%) and GAOs (2.78%) ensured the enhanced nitrogen removal during the aerobic and anoxic phases. Endogenous denitrification (ED) is an effective approach to achieve advanced nitrogen removal for low COD/N (C/N) municipal wastewater, in which internal carbon sources are used for denitrification. However, phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and denitrifying ordinary heterotrophic organisms (DOHOs) outcompeting glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) for carbon sources decreases total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency. This study proposed a novel side-stream sludge treatment strategy, i.e., through phosphorus famine, to selectively strengthen GAOs. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBR) were used, with one served as an anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic SBR (AOA-SBR) and the other as a side SBR. Side-stream phosphorus famine treatment was conducted three times during 140 days' experiment, of which 20–30% of the sludge collected from the AOA-SBR was imposed to phosphorus famine condition in the side SBR for 4 days (24 cycles). Results showed that the average TIN and phosphorus removal efficiencies were 88.76% and 95.31%, and the average TIN and phosphorus in the effluent were 8.01 and 0.30 mg/L, respectively, treating low C/N (~3.25) municipal wastewater in the AOA-SBR. The relative abundance of PAOs decreased from 3.23% to 2.15% and that of DOHOs reduced by 62.78%. In contrast, the abundance of GAOs increased from 3.09% to18.25%, which should be the key reason for the improvement of the ED efficiency. Moreover, the enrichment of GAOs promoted ED simultaneously using glycogen and poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) as carbon sources. Integrating endogenous denitrification (ED) into partial nitrification-anammox (PNA) systems by adequately utilizing organics in municipal wastewater is a promising approach to improve nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE). In this study, a novel strategy to inhibit phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) by inducing phosphorus release and exclusion was adopted intermittently, optimizing organics allocation between PAOs and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs). Enhanced ED-synergized anammox was established to treat real municipal wastewater, achieving an NRE of 97.5±2.2% and effluent total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) of less than 2.0 mg/L. With low poly-phosphorus (poly-P) levels (poly-P/VSS below 0.01 (w/w)), glycogen accumulating metabolism (GAM) acquired organics exceeded that of phosphorus accumulating metabolism (PAM) and dominated endogenous metabolism. Ca. Competibacter (GAO) dominated the community following phosphorus-rich supernatant exclusion, with abundance increasing from 3.4% to 5.7%, accompanied by enhanced ED capacity (0.2 to 1.4 mg N/g VSS /h). The enriched subgroups (GB4, GB5) of Ca. Competibcate r established a consistent nitrate cycle with anammox bacteria (AnAOB) through endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) at a ∆NO 2 −-N/∆NH 4 +-N of 0.91±0.11, guaranteeing the maintenance of AnAOB abundance and performance. Stable nitritation is the major challenge for short-cut nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater. This paper demonstrated a rapid achievement of partial nitrification (PN) in an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) reactor treating domestic wastewater. Polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) were enriched operated at a short aerobic HRT (2.0 h) and SRT (10 d), with satisfactory phosphorus removal efficiency (95.9%). Both of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were elutriated simultaneously. Interestingly, AOB recovered much faster than NOB by a subsequent extension of aerobic HRT and SRT, resulting in a rapid development of PN within 15 days. Ammonia oxidation rates of AOB significantly increased by 44.2%, facilitating a high nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) of 95.8%. Genus Tetrasphaera, Halomonas, Paracoccus and Candidatus_Accumulibacter belonging to PAOs accounted for 4.6%. High nitrite concentration without inhibition of exogenous organic matter is optimal condition for anammox process. In this study, hydrolytic fermentation (HF) of SBOM was applied to drive an endogenous partial denitrification (EPD) process (nitrate to nitrite) during an anaerobic-anoxic operation in a starch-fed system. With a limited production of exogenous organic matter (22.3 ± 4.9 mg COD/L), 79.0% of SBOM was transformed into poly-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) through a pathway of simultaneous HF-absorption and endogenous polymer synthesis, corresponding to a hydrolytic fermentation ratio of 86.0%. A high nitrate to nitrite transformation ratio of 85.4% was achieved under an influent carbon to nitrogen ratio of 4.8. Denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms (DGAOs) was enriched from 0.6% to 10.9%, with an increase from 0.7 to 1.0 of nitrate reductase genes to nitrite reductase genes ratio. Subsequently, nitrate reduction rate was 5.6-fold higher than the nitrate reduction rate. A prominent migration of exogenous complete denitrification to EPD was accomplished. Furthermore, the starch-fed system exhibited performance with significant adaptability and stability in the presence of different SBOMs (dissolved protein and primary sludge). Therefore, the HF-EPD system achieved efficient nitrite production through EPD with the addition of various SBOMs, providing a potential alternative to anammox systems for the treatment of SBOM-rich wastewater.
