Fly ash (FA) is characterized by its porous structure and richness in silicon and aluminum oxides; thus, it can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals. In order to enhance the absorption efficiency and stabilization effect, we prepared a new fly ash (FAKCa) using calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and phosphate (KH2PO4) through a simple one-step low-temperature alkali dissolution method and investigated its adsorption performance for lead and cadmium in water solutions and the stabilization effects of lead and cadmium in soils under flooding condition. Results showed that the Langmuir model best fit the adsorption behavior of lead and cadmium, and the maximal adsorption capabilities of lead (128 mg/g) and cadmium (39.1 mg/g) for FAKCa were increased by 236% and 14.5% compared with the unmodified FA, respectively. The adsorption of lead and cadmium by FAKCa was better fitted to the second-order kinetic model. The enhancement of adsorption capacities for lead and cadmium may be partly due to the specific surface area of FAKCa, which was increased by 94.0% compared to unmodified FA. FTIR, XRD, and XPS analysis showed that the Si-O and Al-O functional groups, carbonate, and hydroxide precipitation were facilitated by the adsorption of lead and cadmium. Thus, ion exchange, surface complexation, and formation of metal hydroxide and carbonate precipitation were the main adsorption mechanisms for lead and cadmium by FAKCa. In addition, the application of 0.1–0.6% FAKCa increased soil pH by 0.19–0.67 units and decreased the CaCl2-extractable lead by 12.3–86.5% compared to FA. Meanwhile, FAKCa was more effective in transforming lead and cadmium from exchangeable to stable fractions. This study shows that calcium hydroxide–phosphate-modified fly ash could effectively increase the adsorption and stabilization of lead and cadmium and, thus, has great potential for large-scale applications in contaminated soil. Phytoextraction is a promising technology for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soil. Continuously screening potential plants is important for enhancing the efficiency of remediation. In this study, fourteen local native plant species and four cultivated plant species, along with their paired soils, were collected from around a copper smelter. The characteristics of soil pollution were evaluated using contaminant factors (CF) and a geoaccumulation index (Igeo). The phytoextraction potential of plants was investigated using the translocation factor (TF) and bioconcentration factor (BCF). The soils around the smelter were very acidic, with a mean pH of 5.01. The CF for copper and cadmium were 8.67–32.3 and 5.45–44.2, and the Igeo values for copper and cadmium were 2.43–4.43 and −0.12–2.29, respectively, indicating that the level of soil contamination was moderate to severe. The copper concentrations in the root (357 mg/kg), shoot (219 mg/kg), and leaf (269 mg/kg) of Elsholtzia splendens Nakai were higher than that in the other species. The cadmium in the shoot (32.2 mg/kg) and leaf (18.5 mg/kg) of Sedum plumbizincicola was the highest, and Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. had the highest cadmium level (20 mg/kg) in the root. Soil total and CaCl2-extractable copper and cadmium were positively correlated with copper and cadmium in the plant roots, respectively. The results of TF and BCF for copper and cadmium suggested that the accumulation and translocation capacities for cadmium were higher than those of copper in the eighteen plant species. Although not all plants met the criteria of being hyperaccumulators, Sedum plumbizincicola, Mosla chinensis Maxim, and Elsholtzia splendens Nakai showed the most potential as candidates for the phytoextraction of copper and cadmium contaminated soils, as indicated by their TF and BCF values. Fly ash (FA) is promising for environmental remediation, but how to modify the FA with high remediation efficiency through an environmentally friendly and low-cost modification method is scare. A modified FA (MFA) was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal modification with Ca(OH)2 and KH2PO4. Results indicated that irregular agglomerates occurred on the surface of the MFA and that the specific surface area increased by 1.94 times compared to that of FA. Compared to FA, glassy compositions in MFA were destroyed and amorphous Si/Al and alkaline aluminosilicate gels were formed. The soil application of 0.2–0.6% MFA significantly increased soil pH by 0.23–0.86 units compared to FA and decreased available lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) by 25–97.1% and 13.5–75%, respectively. MFA significantly decreased exchangeable Pb and Cu by 12.5–32% and 11.4–35.2%, respectively, compared to FA. This may be due to the high pH and specific surface area of MFA, which promoted to the formation of amorphous Si/Al, metal–phosphate precipitation, and complexation with functional groups. In addition, MFA slightly increased the biomass of shoots and roots and decreased the uptake of Pb and Cu by ryegrass. Develop a broadband, ultra-thin metamaterial absorber based on a carbonyl iron cylinder array to overcome the performance limitations of traditional magnetic absorbers in complex electromagnetic environments. The proposed metamaterial achieves a high absorption rate of 90% across a wide frequency range, spanning from 3.44 GHz to 18 GHz, and effectively covers the C, X, Ku, and 28% of the S bands, with a remarkably thin profile of just 2.4 mm. The impact of adjustments in structural parameters on the material’s absorption intensity is comprehensively analyzed. Additionally, the absorber demonstrates polarization insensitivity and sustains high absorption under oblique incidence, maintaining a rate above 90% at 10.02 GHz with an incident angle up to 50 degrees. Detailed investigations into the electric field, magnetic field, and power loss across frequencies provide insight into the absorption mechanisms. These results highlight an innovative approach to designing high-performance electromagnetic absorbing metamaterials with significant potential for practical applications in complex environments. A method to extend the operational bandwidth of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) type absorptive metamaterials is proposed. An ultrathin, five-band absorptive metamaterial with wide-angle absorption and polarization sensitivity in the X-band is designed. The total absorption bandwidth across the five bands, with reflection losses below −10 dB (absorption rate greater than 90 %), is nearly 1 GHz. The physical mechanisms of absorption are analyzed through the distributions of surface current, electric field, and magnetic field. Samples were fabricated and tested, and the results were consistent with the simulation outcomes. To enhance the bandwidth of the absorptive metamaterial and its application prospects, magnetic materials such as barium ferrite and carbonyl iron were introduced into a rubber vulcanization layer, which was then combined with the ultrathin absorptive material to create a novel absorptive material. When the magnetic material content in the rubber layer was 50 wt%, the frequency range with reflection losses below −10 dB increased by approximately nine times, covering 69.5 % of the C-Ku band. This significantly broadens the bandwidth of the pure MDM-type absorptive metamaterial, providing a feasible solution for the design of broadband ultrathin absorptive materials. Abstract Heavy metal contamination of soils has become a major global environmental problem. Previous studies have reported that hydroxyapatite has been extensively used to immobilize soil heavy metals, and the grain sizes of amendments affect the bioavailability and geochemical stability of heavy metals. However, it is not clear how soil microbial diversity and community composition in these soils vary with the application of hydroxyapatite. A field study was conducted to determine the effect of different grain sizes of hydroxyapatite on Cu and Cd bioavailability and microbial community composition. Results showed that micro-hydroxyapatite (MAP), nano-hydroxyapatite (NAP) and normal hydroxyapatite (AP) increased soil pH and decreased soil exchangeable acid and exchangeable Al. Compared with the control, MAP was the most efficient in decreasing the CaCl 2 -extractable Cu and Cd by 97.5 and 86.5%, respectively, and exchangeable Cu and Cd by 82.4% and 27.4%, respectively. The soil microbial community composition varied with the amendments of different sizes, and the soil bacterial diversity increased after the amendment applications. Analysis of the network structure showed that fewer operational taxonomic units were enriched or depleted between the MAP- and NAP-amended soils, which explained the similarity between the MAP- and NAP-amended soils. These results suggest that MAP may be the best material for amending heavy metal-contaminated soils when considering immobilization efficiency and soil biological characteristics. In an effort to address public concerns of the long-term stability and ecological risk reduction of Cu and Cd in a farmland located at the Guixi, Jiangxi Province, China, containing ∼ 800 mg kg−1 Cu and 0.8 mg kg−1 Cd soil, were treated in situ by attapulgite, apatite, montmorillonite and lime at the rate: 10, 10, 10 and 4 g kg−1 soil, respectively. Field experiment consisted of 2 × 3-m plots arranged in a randomised complete block design with each treatment. Soil and plant samples were collected in sixth years post-treatments and analysed for Cu and Cd bioaccessibility, chemical fraction and Cu, Cd concentration in plant tissue. The results indicated that the apatite and lime treatments significantly reduced bioaccessible and exchangeable fractions Cu and Cd in the soil at sixth years post the treatments. Cu and Cd concentration in plant tissue was positively related to the bioaccessibility of Cu and Cd. The treatment used 10 g apatite kg−1 soil appeared to be most effective for overall risk reduction. The Cu and Cd stabilisation and risk reduction by the apatite treatments were accomplished by the induced transformation of labile Cu and Cu species to relatively insoluble forms. This study illustrated that in situ Cu and Cd stabilisation by apatite would be long-term and ecologically safe, which could safeguard human health and ecosystem from Cu and Cd contamination in mining areas. Phosphorus (P)-laden biochar has been widely used for environmental lead (Pb) remediation, but the P release risk and their adsorption and immobilization effect on soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) between inherent P-laden biochar and exogenous P-laden biochar are rarely investigated. In this study, two biochars loaded with low and moderate inherent P (LPIB and MPIB) and two biochars loaded with moderate and high exogenous P (MPEB and HPEB) were produced by wheat straws with total P concentrations of 2.53, 4.71, 5.24, and 10.8 mg g−1, respectively. Water-extractable P was dominated in LPIB (49.5%), MPIB (35.9%), and MPEB (42.1%), while residual P was predominant in HPEB (43.5%). Meanwhile, labile P in MPEB (3002 mg kg−1) was 1.32 times higher than that in MPIB (2272 mg kg−1). Maximum P release capacity followed the order: LPIB (1.53 mg g−1) < MPIB (2.13 mg g−1) < MPEB (2.65 mg g−1) < HPEB (4.37 mg g−1), which was more suitable for the pseudo-second-order model. Lower pH, common anions (Cl−, NO 3 −, SO 4 2−, HCO 3 −) and cations (Na+, K+) significantly promoted P release from biochar, but Ca2+ and Mg2+ inhibited P release. Langmuir sorption isotherms were better fitted the sorption of Pb2+ by the four biochars and the maximum adsorption capacities followed the order of HPEB (116 mg g−1) > LPIB (105 mg g−1) ≈ MPEB (104 mg g−1) ≈ MPIB (103 mg g−1). Four biochars applications significantly increased soil pH by 0.66–0.68 and decreased CaCl 2 -extractable Pb and exchangeable Pb by 72.1–92.7% and 27.3–33.0%, promoting Pb bounding to carbonate and organic matter by 57.2–60.9% and 367–467%, respectively. HPEB application increased labile P by 25.6% and 37.2% compared to MPIB and MPEB applications. Phytoremediation is a potential cost-effective technology for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soils. In this study, we evaluated the biomass and accumulation of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) of plant species grown in a contaminated acidic soil treated with limestone. Five species produced biomass in the order: Pennisetum sinese > Elsholtzia splendens > Vetiveria zizanioides > Setaria pumila > Sedum plumbizincicola . Over one growing season, the best accumulators for Cu and Cd were Pennisetum sinese and Sedum plumbizincicola , respectively. Overall, Pennisetum sinese was the best species for Cu and Cd removal when biomass was considered. However, Elsholtzia splendens soil had the highest enzyme activities and microbial populations, while the biological properties in Pennisetum sinese soil were moderately enhanced. While biochar is useful for environmental remediation, the effects of aging on the activation of endogenous trace metals in biochar remain unclear. In this study, three biochars with different concentrations of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) were produced from the straws of Pennisetum sinese grown in moderately-polluted (MB), highly-polluted (HB), and clean (CB) soils. The effects of aging on biochar properties and bioavailability of endogenous Cu and Cd were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Boehm titration, and chemical extraction before and after dry-wet (DW) and freeze-thaw (FT) aging. DW and FT aging increased the specific surface areas and abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups in the biochars. Aging decreased the biochar pH, degree of graphitization, and stability. The leachability of Cu and Cd were higher after FT aging than after DW aging, and the bioavailability of Cu and Cd were higher in MB and HB than those in CB. Aging increased the bioavailability of Cu in all biochars, whereas it only increased the bioavailability of Cd in MB. Aging increased the mobility of Cu and Cd by 2.31–12.2 and 0.22–1.31 times. The trends of the mobility and leachability of Cu were not consistent with those of total Cu in the biochars, while mobility and leachability of Cd and total Cd had the same trends. The activation of endogenous Cu was primary associated with the compositions of organic functional groups in the biochars. However, Cd activation was mostly related to the changes in the inorganic components and pH of the biochars. This study implies that aging can activate endogenous metals in biochars, and the potential environmental risk of a biochar should be carefully evaluated to ensure its safe and sustainable application. • A red paddy soil was incubated with hematite and hydroxyapatite for 42 days under flooding. • Hematite decreased soil Cu and Cd availability in the presence of hydroxyapatite. • The addition of hematite decreased soil labile phosphorus in the presence of hydroxyapatite. • Hematite plus hydroxyapatite is effective for Cu and Cd immobilization in soil. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is often applied as chemical amendment in soils contaminated with trace metals such as copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd). Large amounts of iron oxides in red soil may interacts with phosphate released from HA and influence trace metal immobilization of HA. Here we simulated a red paddy soil with 1–5% wt iron oxides by adding hematite and evaluated the Cu and Cd availability in soil amended with HA under flooded conditions. Changes in phosphorus and iron oxide fractions were also evaluated after a 42-day flooding incubation experiment. Results showed that the addition of HA-only and hematite-only decreased soil redox potential and increased pore water pH compared to the control. HA combined with hematite could effectively decrease phosphate, Cu and Cd in soil pore water compared to HA-only. Additionally, HA combined with hematite could also increase soil pH and decrease soil CaCl 2 -extractable Cu and Cd. In particular, HA combined with 5% hematite was most effective in reducing soil exchangeable fractions of Cu and Cd by 53.7% and 65.6% compared to the control, respectively. The addition of HA-only increased water-soluble phosphorus, NaHCO 3 -extractable inorganic phosphorus, NaOH-extractable inorganic phosphorus, and HCl-extractable phosphorus. Conversely, HA combined with hematite treatments decreased NaHCO 3 -extractable inorganic phosphorus by 11.3–43.0% compared to HA-only. Vivianite and metal–phosphate precipitates were not observed using the Visual MINTEQ model, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis. The addition of hematite with or without HA increased free and crystal iron oxide fractions, while it substantially enhanced amorphous iron oxides in the soil. Thus, this study indicates that soil with high hematite content could enhance Cu and Cd immobilization while decreasing phosphorus availability in the red paddy soil amended with HA under the flooded conditions. Phytostabilization aided by soil amendments has been advocated in areas contaminated by trace metals. In this study, the effects of indigenous weed (Setaria pumila), energy plant (Pennisetum sinese), cadmium (Cd)-hyperaccumulator (S edum plumbizincicola), and copper (Cu)-tolerant plant (Elsholtzia splendens) on the bioavailability and mobility of Cu and Cd in polluted soil were evaluated after phytostabilization aided by limestone (0.1% wt) over four years. The four plants combined with limestone significantly increased soil pH and decreased Cu and Cd fractions extracted by NH 4 OAc and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) than the untreated soils, respectively. P. sinese treatments decreased DGT-extractable Cu and Cd by 52.1% and 40.5% than S. pumila treatments, respectively. S. plumbizincicola and E. splendens treatments increased acid-soluble fraction of Cu and decreased residual fraction of Cu compared with S. pumila treatments. P. sinese treatments had the lowest phytotoxicity (inhibitoryrates, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities) among all treatments. Moreover, EDTA kinetic extraction showed that S. plumbizincicola and E. splendens treatments increased the mobility of Cu and Cd by increasing labile and less labile fractions of Cu and Cd compared with P. sinese treatments. Permanent magnet coupling (PMC) generates a large amount of thermal energy due to the eddy current induced in the metal isolation cylinder, resulting in performance degradation. The magnetic-thermal-mechanical coupling analysis has an important impact on the design and operation of PMC devices. In this paper, the Maxwell equations are solved based on the separated variable method; the 3D eddy current loss and magnetic torque equations are proposed; and the electrical conductivity, the convective heat transfer coefficient, and the magnetic-thermal-mechanical properties of PMC are presented. The 3D analytical coupling model calculates the temperature field and presents an uneven distribution of temperature along the coolant flow direction, and it then obtains a more precise magnetic field and torque under various temperatures. Furthermore, the working conditions such as rotor speed, coolant flow rate, and applied load are taken into consideration in the 3D analytical model. The results show that the eddy current loss is proportional to the square of the speed. With an increase in the load, the eddy current decreases. However, with an increase in the coolant flow, more eddy current loss would be produced, but the generated heat would be taken away by the increased coolant flow, resulting in a decrease in the temperature. In order to evaluate the ecological risk reductions of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) and the change of nutrient contents and stoichiometry in a smelter-impacted farmland in Guixi, Jiangxi Province, China, with ∼ 800 mg Cu kg−1 soil and 0.8 mg Cd kg−1 soil, an three years in situ experiment was conducted. The field trial consisted of 4 × 5 m plots in a completely randomised block design. Hydroxyapatite was added at 10 g kg−1 soil and Sedum plumbizincicola, Elsholtzia splendens, and Pennisetum sp. were planted. Post-treatment soil and plant samples were collected annually and analysed for Cu and Cd bioaccessibility, soil carbon: nitrogen: phosphorus (C:N:P), and the stoichiometries of soil β-glucosidase (BG), N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG), and acid phosphatase (AP) activity levels. The results indicated that the hydroxyapatite treatments significantly reduced Cu and Cd bioaccessibility as well as the ratio of C:P and N:P. Moreover, BG, NAG, and AP activity levels all increased relative to those in untreated soil. Plants may also influence soil BG, NAG, and AP activity. This study demonstrated that in situ Cu and Cd stabilisation by hydroxyapatite and phytoextraction is ecologically safe and can alter soil mineral nutrient ecological stoichiometry and enzyme activity. Abstract Sediment resuspension widely occurs in environments with hydrodynamic disturbances, where particles are sieved into different grain size groups. The particles of different grain size exhibit heterogeneity of their physical, chemical or biological features. This research addressed the association of metals on size fractional particles sieved by sediment resuspension in a canal of Taihu basin, a highly urbanized and human-impacted area. Surface sediment samples were collected from upstream to downstream sections of the canal to analyze the concentrations and fractionation of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). One sediment sample was sieved into five different particle size groups (50–150 μm, 30–50 μm, 10–30 μm, 5–10 μm and <5 μm) through the wet sedimentation method. The strong adsorption ability of metals on fine particles is attributed to enrichment with organic matter and iron/aluminum (Fe/Al) oxides, with the increase in Pb, Zn, and Cu concentrations from 34.2 mg/kg, 263 mg/kg, and 32.5 mg/kg of 50–150 μm size group particles to 71.4 mg/kg, 698 mg/kg, and 137 mg/kg of <5 μm size group particles, respectively. The fine particles showed stronger sorption ability on Pb than Zn and Cu, with the Freundlich isotherm constant (K f) values of the adsorption isotherms in the <10 μm size particle group ranging from 3.7 to 5.9 g/kg for Zn and Cu versus from 11 to 18 g/kg for Pb, probably causing difference on metals accumulation and releasing risk among metals in the downstream lakes with changeable environments. Aims: Atmospheric trace metal deposition is an important source in agricultural soils and crops, but a large knowledge gap exists between foliar and root uptake of wet/dry deposition. We aim to distinguish the contribution of dry and wet-deposited trace metals to rice plant via foliar and root uptake and to investigate their accumulations during the full growth season. Methods: We performed an atmospheric exposure experiment using customized open top chambers (OTCs) to distinguish the impacts of wet and dry deposition contribution to foliar and root uptake and their mobility in soils. The foliar uptake and then translocation was hypothesized the major pathway of trace metal accumulation in rice grains. Results: Foliar uptake of wet- and dry-deposited Cu, Zn, and Pb played an important role in their accumulations in rice plant, contributing to 44–47%, 23–25%, and 35–37% in rice grains, respectively. The leaf Cu, Zn, and Pb accumulated from atmospheric deposition can be transported upward to rice grains but nodes seem to restrict them downward translocation. Rice leaves cannot directly take up atmospheric As and the deposited As can only accumulate in rice through the root uptake. The trace metals showed high mobility in atmospheric deposition, which significantly increase the bioavailable trace metal fractions in surface soils and soil solutions. Conclusions: This study provides a new insight of similar or even higher contributions of foliar uptake than root uptake of trace metals from atmospheric deposition and that reducing the accumulation of atmospheric trace metals due to deposition on leaves can effectively decrease the accumulation of trace metals in crops. Natural biomass ash of agricultural residuals was collected from a power plant and modified with hexagonal mesoporous silica and functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The physicochemical and morphological properties of the biomass ash were analyzed by ICP-OES, SEM, TEM-EDS, FTIR, and BET analysis. The adsorption behavior of the modified product for Cd2+ in aqueous solution was studied as a function of pH, initial metal concentration, equilibrium time, and temperature. Results showed that the specific surface area of the modified product was 9 times that of the natural biomass ash. The modified biomass ash exhibited high affinity for Cd2+ and its adsorption capacity increased sharply with increasing pH from 4.0 to 6.0. The maximum adsorption capacity was 23.95 mg/g in a pH 5 solution with an initial metal concentration of 50 mg/L and a contact time of 90 min. The adsorption of Cd2+ onto the modified biomass ash was well fitted to the Langmuir model and it followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Thermodynamic analysis results showed that the adsorption of Cd2+ was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. To study the remediation effect of hydroxyapatite with different particle sizes, a field in situ experiment was carried out by adding conventional hydroxyapatite (0.25 mm) and microhydroxyapatite (3 μm) and nanohydroxyapatite (40 nm) to the contaminated soil and planting Elsholtzia splendens. The distribution and migration of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) in soil were investigated after 4 years. The results show that the application of three different particle sizes of hydroxyapatite significantly raise the soil pH, total phosphorus, and soil organic carbon. Moreover, the addition of hydroxyapatite can reduce the EXC fraction of Cu and Cd by 73.7%–80.1% and 20.8%–35.2%, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of Cu and Cd in >2 mm, 0.25–2 mm, 0.053–0.25 mm, and <0.053 mm aggregate are significantly increased. This improvement indicates that there are risks which may cause the increasing of total Cu and Cd in the soil where the pollution sources still exist. Furthermore, the content of soil colloid is significantly increased, and the colloidal Cu and Cd distribution percentage have been significantly increased by 49.9%–120% and 30.3%–181%. Rapid, accurate, and non-destructive acquisition of the distribution of reclaimed soil moisture information can provide data for the rapid monitoring of reclaimed soil in areas experiencing coal mining subsidence. However, the water content inversion methods based on ground penetrating radar (GPR) are mostly single-attribute analysis methods, which are easily affected by the soil structure. This paper proposes a multi-attribute joint analysis method, which can reduce the influence of complex soil structure on the prediction results. Surveys and soil sampling using GPR were performed on a subsided reclamation area in Huaibei City, Anhui Province, China. Correlation analysis of GPR attribute information and volumetric water content (VWC) showed that frequency peak (FP), average envelope amplitude (AEA), energy, instantaneous amplitude area, instantaneous frequency area, and average instantaneous frequency values were significantly related to the VWC of reclaimed soil. The applicability of different single-attribute analysis methods under the condition of reclaimed soil was compared. Results showed that the predictive effects of FP and AEA attributes were better than other attributes. Generally, the single-attribute analysis method was greatly affected by the structure of reclaimed soil, so the accuracy and reliability of this method need to be further optimized. The prediction results of the single- and multi-attribute joint analysis methods in the structure of reclaimed soil were compared and analyzed. This showed that the prediction accuracy and model reliability of the multi-attribute method are both higher than those of the single-attribute method. The multi-attribute method can overcome the problem of insufficient accuracy of water content detection of ground-seeking radar in soil with a complex structure. Finally, the multi-attribute method was used to obtain the water distribution information in the reclamation area. • Foliar Se application more effectively promoted the yield for the soft wheat variety. • The reduction of Cd in wheat grain was dependent on wheat cultivars. • Foliar Se and Si application only reduced grain Cd in soft wheat but not durum wheat. • Se and Si application alleviated Cd-induced oxidative stress by improving antioxidative systems. • Se and Si application downregulated the expression of influx transporter and upregulated influx transporter. Minimization of Cd accumulation in wheat is an effective strategy to prevent Cd hazard to human. This study compared and highlighted the roles of soil and foliar applications of Se and Si effects on Cd accumulation and toxicity in soft and durum wheat. Soil Se (0.5–1.0 mg kg–1) and Si (3–6 mg kg–1) applications provided an effective strategy to reduce wheat grain Cd concentrations of both wheat varieties by 59–61 % and 16–30 %, but foliar Se (0.125−0.25 mM) and Si (2.5–5 mM) application reduced grain Cd of soft wheat by 20–36 %. Both soil and foliar Se and Si applications significantly alleviated Cd toxicity by regulation of Cd transport genes, as reflected by increased the grain yield and antioxidant enzymes activities, and reduced MDA in wheat tissues. Selenium applications were more effective than Si on the reduction of Cd-induced toxicity and concentrations in soft wheat, but not in durum wheat due to more tolerant to Cd. Downregulation of influx transporter (TaNramp5) and upregulation of efflux transporter (TaTM20 and TaHMA3) in soft wheat may contribute to the Si/Se-dependent Cd mitigation and enhance the tolerance to toxic Cd. Sediment resuspension is one of the main factors impacting the ecological restoration of shallow eutrophic lakes, but the mechanisms connecting suspended particles and algal growth have not been clarified. Our research presents an innovative approach based on P reallocation among particles with various sizes, considering the changes in redox and pH conditions from the sediments to the overlying water during resuspension. A lab-scale experiment was conducted to simulate P reallocation in particles during sediment resuspension by periodically dosing the system with P and/or organic carbon. The sediments were sampled and sieved into five particle size groups, namely, 50–150 μm, 30–50 μm, 10–30 μm, 5–10 μm and <5 μm, and their P fractions during the operation were analyzed. The bioavailable P associated with aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides showed exponential enrichment as the median grain size of particles decreased, with 54% of the added P adsorbed by fine particles of <10 μm (5–10 μm and <5 μm). Furthermore, a bioassay of algae growth potential (Microcystis aeruginosa sp.), along with P adsorption isotherms, was conducted to test the ability of the different size-resolved particles to supply P for algae growth. The fine particles of <10 μm supplied more P to algae under elevated pH values than did the coarse particles (>10 μm). The restoration of shallow eutrophic lakes faces great challenges due to the connection mechanisms between sediments and algae, as revealed by this research. • More than half of the atmospheric metal depositions presented as mobile fractions. • The newly deposited metals in soils resulted in higher bioavailable fractions. • The newly deposited metals contributed 30˜84% and 6˜41% in rice tissues. • Atmospheric deposition reactivated the metals and transported to plant tissues. Despite the global importance of atmospheric heavy metal input into agricultural soils, research has primarily focused on the amount of the depositions with limited attention given to the risk of the newly deposited heavy metals. To understand the remobilization of the newly deposited copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) from the atmosphere and explore the metals' mobility and bioavailability to rice (Oryza sativa L.), a soil transplant experiment was conducted in three areas along a gradient of atmospheric depositions. Approximately 61% of the Cu and 76% of the Pb depositions tended to be present in potentially mobile fractions. The soil retention of newly deposited Cu and Pb presented as higher mobile fractions than these in the original soil. The newly deposited Cu and Pb in soils only accounted for 0.34–8.7% and 0.07-0.29% of the total soil Cu and Pb pools, but they contributed 30–84% and 6–41% in rice tissues, respectively. A major implication of these findings is that once the heavy metal is deposited, it may be reactivated in soils and transported to aerial parts or foliar uptake into plant tissues, emphasizing the important role of the newly deposited Cu and Pb in contributing to the edible parts of crops.
