Registers known as sicillât-ı şer'iyye, kadı registers, court registers and sharia registers, contain documents such as ilam, hüccet, vakfiye, berat and ferman recorded by qadi or naips. In this respect, the documents in the sharia registers are generally divided into two parts as those sent to the qadi by the Ottoman government or statesmen and those issued by the qadi or naips. Sharia registers, which have a rich variety of subjects in terms of the documents they contain, are important sources in the fields of economy, law and social history. In addition, there are also notes and poetries recorded by qadi, regent or clerks in the registers. Poetries can provide information about the period in which they were written, beyond showing the cultural level and area of interest of the person who wrote them. In this study, the poetries found in the Manisa sharia registers of the first half of the eighteenth century will be discussed. In this sense, it is aimed to contribute to the field of Classical Turkish Literature in addition to the cultural history of Manisa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This criminal history study of the Ruse (Rusçuk) district of the Ottoman Empire is based on analyzing court records (sharia register). In the study, which aims to reveal a small section of the application of the punishment concept in the Ottoman provinces, the court provisions were determined. These provisions were classified according to the type of punishment, and then inferences were made. The study comprised three parts, excluding the introduction and conclusion. At first, the history and socio-economic conditions of the city of Ruse were examined. In the second part, the Ottoman period practices of Islamic criminal law were investigated with a general and theoretical perspective. In this way, it was desired to create a basis for the third party. The last part looks at the punishments given to the criminals in Ruse in a variety of ways, based on the court records from the 18th century. Writing about the crime and punishment history of the Ottoman Empire is especially important because the negatives are memorable and show more clearly what should have happened. This article deals with offences and crimes against female slaves, and those committed by female slaves, in Ottoman Istanbul (sixteenth-seventeeth centuries). Its main sources are imperial legislation and court records of the imperial capital, Istanbul, and its suburbs. Judicial archives remain the chief sources of early modern Ottoman historiography on gender. This contribution tackles slavery's specificities regarding women, without ignoring the parallels with their male counterparts in the Ottoman Empire. By considering women as both objects and agents of legal violations and acts of violence, I simultaneously deal with the rights of slaveholders and slaves. Violations of these rights varied depending on the identity and juridical status of their authors, and were handled accordingly by the justice system. Thus, I consider violations committed by owners against their slaves, by slaves against their owners, and by third parties against the slaves of others. The rights and mutual obligations of masters and slaves were strictly defined in Ottoman law, although the judicial authorities upheld the preservation of private property above all. They dedicated themselves to fighting against the slightest doubt over masters' quasi-absolute authority over their human possessions, whose unconditional obedience was required. Female slaves, in order to affirm their rights, had to provide irrefutable written proof or trustworthy verbal testimonies at the kadi courts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large number of researches have been conducted on the âyans who made their marks on 18th century Ottoman history. These researches have generally focused on some of the most powerful and influential âyan dynasties. However, the findings about the exact sources of âyan's influence on society and administration are still limited. This study suggests using social network analysis (SNA) in order to expand the knowledge base about âyans as a social stratum. In this study, on two Bursa court registers belonging to the late 18th century, in which âyans of Bursa were most effective, the method of social network analysis was carried out according to the debtor-creditor relation as a variable.
