Land surface temperature (LST) plays an essential role in developing and applying precision agriculture protocols, especially for calculating crop evapotranspiration (ETc) by surface energy balance (SEB) approaches; and for determining crop water status. However, LST is quite dependent on the meteorological conditions, which can rapidly vary. This variability, together with the limited meterological data acquisition frequency in most weather stations, can lead to the miscalculation of the SEB components, especially relevant when used for irrigation purposes. The present study assessed the temporal dynamic of LST in a very short period of time (20-minutes) through the acquisition of multiple thermal imagery. Additionally, a combination of SEB approach with Eddy Covariance technique was performed for quantifying the effect that LST variations have on the sensible (H) and latent (LE) heat fluxes. Even under steady meteorological conditions, temporal variations in LST of 3.5 and 4.0 K were observed for tree canopy and sunny bare soil surfaces, respectively. These LST oscillations reached values of about 7.8 and 17.9 K for tree canopies and bare soil when heterogeneous meteorological conditions were observed (i.e. cloud presence). Such LST differences translated into H and LE differences of about 26 and 19%, respectively; with variations up to 5 (for H) and 2.7 times (for LE) under fast-varying meteorological conditions. The obtained results suggest the necessity of acquiring thermal imagery when steady meteorological conditions exist or, otherwise, ensuring the collection of instantaneous meteorological data for applying post-processing corrections. The ability to delineate site-specific management zones is a key feature for precision agriculture applications. In this study, a novel methodological protocol for mapping the water status, i.e. the stem water potential (SWP), of citrus orchards was developed. Specifically, observed stem water potential (SWP obs) values and unmanned aerial vehicle multispectral information (i.e., vegetation indices, VIs, and spectral bands, SBs) were integrated to implement a twofold approach based on: (i) the spatial interpolation (SWP int) of the SWP obs , and (ii) the stepwise regression models (SWP proxy) between the SWP obs and the VIs (scenario 1) or between the SWP obs and the SBs (scenario 2). Then, the derived crop water status maps (SWP int and SWP proxy) were customized by applying an absolute (scientific-driven), a relative (quantile-driven), and an automated clustering (K-means) classification method. The accuracy of the proposed approach, evaluated by comparing SWP int and SWP proxy with SWP obs using linear regression models, showed reliable results, with average mean absolute error and root mean square error values ranging from 0.13 to 0.19 MPa and from 0.19 to 0.24 MPa, respectively. These results provide practical insights for identifying the spatial-temporal variability of the SWP of the citrus orchard under study. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of using a scientific-driven classification to support the adoption of precision irrigation criteria and decision-making process by non-expert users, as indicated by the assessment of the Silhouette index. In this study, spatially distributed estimates of regional actual evapotranspiration (ET) were obtained using a revised procedure of the so called “triangle method” to parameterize the Priestley–Taylor ϕ coefficient. In the procedure herein proposed, named Time-Domain Triangle Method (TDTM), the triangular feature space was parameterized considering pairs of T s –VI values obtained by exploring, for each pixel, only their temporal dynamics. This new method was developed using time series products provided by MODIS and MSG-SEVIRI sensors. Moreover the proposed procedure does not depend on ancillary data, and it is only based on remotely sensed vegetation indices and day–night time land surface temperature differences. Two different test areas located in Sicily were selected for testing and validating the approach. Satellite ET rates were validated versus directly measured fluxes of mass (ET) obtained by eddy covariance (EC) towers during the observation period 2010–2012. The proposed approach predicts daily ET rates with an acceptable level of accuracy for practical purposes; therefore, the TDTM can be considered as a simple and effective tool to easily estimate, at regional scale, spatial and temporal changes of this key-variable related to water resource management, agriculture, ecology and climate change. Under the current water scarcity scenario, the promotion of water saving strategies is essential for improving the sustainability of the irrigated agriculture. In particular, high resolution irrigated area maps are required for better understanding water uses and supporting water management authorities. The main purpose of this study was to provide a stand-alone remote sensing (RS) methodology for mapping irrigated areas. Specifically, an unsupervised classification approach on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data was coupled with the OPtical TRApezoid Model (OPTRAM) for detecting actual irrigated areas without the use of any reference data. The proposed methodology was firstly applied and validated at the Marchfeld Cropland region (Austria) during the irrigation season 2021, showing a good agreement with an overall accuracy of 70%. Secondly, it was applied at the irrigation district Quota 102,50 (Italy) for the irrigation seasons 2019–2020. The results of the latter were instead compared with the data declared by the Reclamation Consortium, finding an overestimation of irrigated areas of 21%. In conclusion, this study suggests an easy-to-use approach, eventually independent of reference data such as agricultural statistical surveys or records and replicable under different agricultural settings in continental or Mediterranean climates to support stakeholders for regular estimation of irrigated areas in different growing years or detecting eventual unauthorized water uses. In this paper, based on the analysis of a long-term energy balance monitoring programme, a Bowen ratio-based method (BR) was proposed to resolve the lack of closure of the eddy covariance technique to obtain reliable sensible ( H) and latent heat fluxes (λ E). Evapotranspiration (ET) values determined from the BR method (ET) were compared with the upscaled transpiration data determined by the sap flow heat pulse (HP) technique, evidencing the degree of correspondence between instantaneous transpirational flux at tree level and the micrometeorological measurement of ET at orchard level. Using the BR-corrected λ E fluxes, a crop ET model implementing the Penman-Monteith approach, where the canopy surface resistance was determined from standard microclimatic variables, was applied to determine the crop coefficient values. The performance of the model was evaluated by comparing it with the sap flow HP data. The results of the comparison were satisfactory, and therefore, the proposed methodology may be considered valid for characterizing the ET process for orange orchards grown in a Mediterranean climate. Storage reservoirs are a key element in wastewater treatment trains for agricultural reuse; however, there is a need for further research on design criteria and operation rules for such reactors. The percentage of fresh effluents (PFE) is an important parameter for the design of perfectly-mixed reactors. PFE correlates better than mean residence time with the performance of the reactor. It allows for estimation of the removal of pollutants in non steady-state systems, such as seasonal wastewater storage reservoirs, and for forecasting the quality of the effluents released for irrigation. However, calculation of PFE is a difficult process requiring complex computer algorithms. A simplified analytical approach is developed to calculate the PFE for n days. The formulation is discussed, describing the relationships between the hydraulic variables, and then applied to a non-steady-state continuous-flow wastewater reservoir in Eastern Sicily (Italy). Daily evapotranspiration fluxes over the semi-arid Catania Plain area (Eastern Sicily, Italy) were evaluated using remotely sensed data from Landsat Thematic Mapper TM5 images. A one-source parameterization of the surface sensible heat flux exchange using satellite surface temperature has been used. The transfer of sensible and latent heat is described by aerodynamic resistance and surface resistance. Required model inputs are brightness, temperature, fractional vegetation cover or leaf area index, albedo, crop height, roughness lengths, net radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind speed. The aerodynamic resistance (rah) is formulated on the basis of the Monin-Obukhov surface layer similarity theory and the surface resistance (rs) is evaluated from the energy balance equation. The instantaneous surface flux values were converted into evaporative fraction (EF) over the heterogeneous land surface to derive daily evapotranspiration values. Remote sensing-based assessments of crop water stress (CWSI) were also made in order to identify local irrigation requirements. Evapotranspiration data and crop coefficient values obtained from the approach were compared with: (i) data from the semi-empirical approach "Kc reflectance-based", which integrates satellite data in the visible and NIR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum with ground-based measurements and (ii) surface energy flux measurements collected from a micrometeorological tower located in the experiment area. Abstract: The operational parameter MRT%FE, representing the mean residence time of different ages fractions of effluent within a completely mixed reactor, was evaluated and integrated with first order kinetics. The parameter was used to model Escherichia coli concentrations in a municipal wastewater reservoir managed under different operating conditions (continuous and discontinuous). The study was conducted during 2004–2005 in a reservoir receiving effluents from the activated sludge treatment plant of Caltagirone (Eastern Sicily – Italy). The analytical approach is applied to the hydraulic state variables of the system (daily stored volumes, inlet and outlet flows), and the physical–chemical (pH, temperature, EC, TSS, BOD5, COD) and bacteriological wastewater parameters (E. coli, FC, FS). In order to evaluate the reliability of the proposed approach, predicted E. coli concentrations within the reservoir were compared with measured ones by the correlation coefficient, F-test and Sperman''s index. The study included the evaluation of die-off coefficient KT (d−1), light extinction coefficient K (m−1) and their relationships with climatic factors. Results of the study confirm that E. coli removal is related to the fractions of fresh effluent remaining each day within the reservoir with MRT%FE of about 5–8d, significantly lower than the nominal detention time (about 27d). The effect of four different irrigation levels on the marketable yield and economic return of summer-growth lettuce was evaluated during 2005 and 2006 in Eastern Sicily, Italy. The viability of deficit irrigation was evaluated by estimating optimum applied water levels. Actual evapotranspiration (ETa) was estimated by combining pan evaporation measures and the Penman–Monteith approach (ET0-PM). The highest marketable yield of lettuce was recorded for plots receiving 100% ET0-PM. For deficit irrigated plots, reductions in crop production were ascribed to a decrease in lettuce weight. Crop coefficients equal to 1 determined maximum crop production values. Crop water use efficiency was maximum at a 100% ET0-PM level of water applied, corresponding to yield of 0.3 t ha-1 mm-1. Irrigation water use efficiency reached its maximum at a 40% ET0-PM level, with values of 0.54 and 0.44 t ha-1 mm-1 during 2005 and 2006, respectively. Water applied and marketable yield of lettuce showed a significant quadratic relationship. Cost functions had a quadratic form during 2005 and a linear form during 2006. In the land-limiting condition the optimal economic levels fit the agronomic ones well. In the water-limiting condition, ranges of water deficit of 15–44% and 74–94% were as profitable as full irrigation, thus contributing to appreciable water savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The paper summarises the research carried out on wastewater reservoirs (WWRs) operation during the period 1999–2005 at Grammichele and Caltagirone sites (Eastern Sicily). The wastewater treatment feasibility in WWRs under different (continuous and discontinuous) operation modalities is explored. The sampling monitoring program for the case studies is presented along with wastewater quality modelling to prove the systems reliability to microbiological and organic matter removal. The operational parameter MRT%FE is introduced and combined with first order kinetics to model the concentration of Escherichia coli in WWRs. Results point out that WWRs, properly designed and managed, are a valid technique for wastewater reclamation for agricultural irrigation according to the restrictive Italian standards. In particular, the reliability of wastewater storage in terms of bacteriological removal results enhanced during batch operation as confirmed by the higher values of the die-off coefficient. Abstract: Satellite remote sensed data on canopy biophysical properties, ground data and agro-meteorological information were combined to estimate evapotranspiration (ET) fluxes of orange orchards using a modified Penman–Monteith equation. The study was carried out during the irrigation season 2004 in an irrigation district, cover for about 95% with orange groves, of 1550ha located in eastern Sicily (Italy). The spatial pattern in ET-fluxes have been analysed using IKONOS high-resolution satellite and hyper-spectral ground data acquired and processed for the study-area. The remote estimates of ET-fluxes varied between 1.3 and 5.7mm/day, with a daily average value of about 4.2mm, showing a good agreement with crop ET values determined as residual of soil water balance of selected ground control sites. Crop coefficient estimates ranged between 0.22 and 1.08 showing positive correlations with percentages of ground cover (C g) increasing from 30 to 80% ground shading and with LAI values. By comparing ET estimates with water volumes supplied in each sub-district of the study-area, the performance indicator “IP” was evaluated, allowing to rank the conditions of un-fulfilment of crop water requirements by public and private water distribution systems. Generally, out of 29 sub-districts, 14 had “IP” values less than 50%, revealing a sub-optimal water supply for the study-area. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted by orange orchards (Frost Nucellar navel) having different canopy sizes was measured to determine the relationships with crop coefficient (Kco and Kcr) values and crop evapotranspiration (ET) (ETc). Three separate experiments were carried out near Lindsay, Calif. during the months of July and August 2004 to compute the fraction of light PAR intercepted by mature and immature orange orchards. Periodic readings of PAR data were compared with near simultaneous measurements of net radiation Rn (mV), heat transfer through exposed flux plates Fh (mV), and incident total solar radiation Rs (mV). The PAR data were used to calculate canopy light interception and the results were compared with those computed from the Fh and Rs data. The other sensors were studied as possible substitutes for the more expensive PAR light bar. Light interception by the different canopies was related to crop coefficient (Kco and Kcr) values that were determined by micrometeorological measurement of ETc and Penman–Monteith reference evapotranspiration ETo and ETr. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and crop coefficient (Kco) values of four clean-cultivated navel-orange orchards that were irrigated with microsprinklers, having different canopy features (e.g., age, height, and canopy cover) were evaluated. Half-hourly values of latent heat flux density were estimated as the residual of the energy balance equation using measured net radiation (Rn), soil heat flux density (G), and sensible heat flux density (H) estimated using the surface renewal method. Hourly means of latent heat flux density (LE) were calculated and were divided by the latent heat of vaporization (L) to obtain ETc. Crop coefficients were determined by calculating the ratio Kco=ETc/ETo, with reference evapotranspiration (ETo) determined using the hourly Penman–Monteith equation for short canopies. The estimated Kco values ranged from 0.45 to 0.93 for canopy covers having between 3.5 and 70% ground shading. The Kco values were compared with Kc values from FAO 24 (reported by Doorenbos and Pruitt in 1975) and FAO 56 (reported by Allen et al. in 1998) and with Kc values from research papers that estimated reference ET from pan evaporation data using the FAO 24 method. The observed Kco values were slightly higher than Kc values for clean-cultivated orchards with high-frequency drip irrigation in Arizona and were slightly lower than for nontilled orchards in Florida. In this study, the adaptation characteristics of orange trees, related to the application over a decade of deficit irrigation (DI) strategies, have been explored. To this purpose, the analysis of a minimal dataset composed of physiological information (stem water potential - Ψ stem and sap flow - SF measurements), yield (fruits number and weight) and qualitative parameters (titratable acidity, TA; and total soluble solids, TSS) was performed with reference to the last irrigation seasons (i.e. 2018–19). The applied irrigation treatments were the following: sustained deficit irrigation (SDI); regulated deficit irrigation (RDI); partial root-zone drying (PRD), each distributing a water deficit of about 19%, 29% and 52%, respectively, compared to the control treatment (FI) supplying the full irrigation level (100% ET c). In general, higher water use efficiencies (WUE) have been obtained in DI treatments, which guarantee greater water savings (up to 50%), without affecting yield and quality characteristics. In particular, the most stressed treatment (PRD), while reaching the lowest Ψ stem values (− 1.8 to − 2.0 MPa), as also shown by SF versus Ψ stem clusters, resulted in WUE values for yield (WUE Y), TA (WUE TA) and TSS (WUE TSS) parameters of approximately 2.6, 2.9, and 3.1 times greater than FI, respectively. Overall, this study allowed identifying the cumulative adaptation characteristics of the orange trees under study to the application of long-term DI strategies and showing that trees were able to achieve yields and qualitative features similar to those obtained with FI, even after 10 years of application of deficient irrigation regimes. • Water savings up to 53% were reached for citrus grove under deficit irrigation (DI). • Higher water use efficiencies for DI regimes than for full irrigation conditions. • Orange trees showed adaptation effects after long-term DI application. • Long-term water deficit application did not affect orange yield and quality. The technological advances of remote sensing (RS) have allowed its use in a number of fields of application including plant disease depiction. In this study, an RS approach based on an 18-year (i.e., 2001–2018) time-series analysis of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data, derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and processed with TIMESAT free software, was applied in Sicily (insular Italy). The RS approach was carried out in four orchards infected by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) at different temporal stages and characterized by heterogeneous conditions (e.g., elevation, location, plant age). The temporal analysis allowed the identification of specific metrics of the NDVI time-series at the selected sites during the study period. The most reliable parameter which was able to identify the temporal evolution of CTV syndrome and the impact of operational management practices was the "Base value" (i.e., average NDVI during the growing seasons, which reached R2 values up to 0.88), showing good relationships with "Peak value", "Small integrated value" and "Amplitude", with R2 values of 0.63, 0.70 and 0.75, respectively. The approach herein developed is valid to be transferred to regional agencies involved in and/or in charge of the management of plant diseases, especially if it is integrated with ground-based early detection methods or high-resolution RS approaches, in the case of quarantine plant pathogens requiring control measures at large-scale level. Background and aims: The ever-increasing demand of fresh water from irrigated agriculture and the water scarcity condition that characterizes the Mediterranean region, encourages the adoption of efficient water saving strategies. In this study, the electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) technique was applied for characterizing the mass exchange mechanisms affecting the continuous soil-plant system of heterogeneous micro-irrigated orchards. Methods: Time-lapse ERI surveys were carried out in a multi-variety and mixed-age orange orchard located in Eastern Sicily (insular Italy). The time-lapse ERI monitoring was coupled with the use of independent soil water content (SWC) measurements. Results and conclusions: A clear relationship between the soil electrical resistivity (ER) and the measured SWC changes was identified in the soil under the mixed-age orchard (with an overall coefficient of determination value of 0.63). Specifically, this study highlights the dependency of SWC dynamics as function of tree age. Overall, an increase in ER was obtained in correspondence to the soil domain where the younger trees were located (< = 3 years). This behaviour was inferred to result from the higher soil evaporation process active at these locations, due to less vegetation cover of the younger trees and, consequently to their lesser root extension in comparison to the mature trees (> = 8 years). On the other hand, in mature trees, characterized by denser root biomass, there were more evident decreasing patterns of ER (i.e., greater changes in SWC), due to greater transpiration rates that caused lower initial SWC under these conditions in comparison to the younger trees. Environmental and economic sustainability of agricultural systems has to face the general decreasing trend of water resources through the adoption of strategies aimed at improving water-use efficiency. In the study, during three consecutive summer seasons, the effects of deficit irrigation (DI) treatments applied on mature orange trees [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] cv. "Tarocco Meli" were analyzed. Two different DI strategies supplying 70 and 50% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) were compared with irrigation at the full rate of ETc; the comparisons were carried out in terms of plant physiological response, crop production, quality, and nutritional status. The orange trees became less sensitive to moderate water restrictions (DI = 70% ETc) permitting approximately 80 mm of water saving (i.e., corresponding to a threshold for water stress integral of 60 MPa) per season without any significant impact on their water status and on agronomic performances. Severe water restrictions (DI = 50%ETc) reduced fruit weight and crop production every year, with water-use efficiency values similar to those of the moderate DI (70% ETc). The study does not evidence crop mineral nutrition imbalances and yield decrease caused by mild water reductions. A moderate water restriction can be applied in commercial orange orchards because it saved water and improved fruit quality by increasing total soluble solids and titratable acidity while the fruit maturity was delayed. Precipitation data availability plays a crucial role in many climatic, hydrological and agricultural-related applications. In this study, the use of alternative data sources (i.e. interpolation methods and ERA5-Land reanalysis data) was combined for improving the spatially distributed precipitation estimates at the Simeto river basin, located in Eastern Sicily (Italy). A total of 51 rain gauges were used to generate a monthly precipitation dataset for the reference period 2002–2019. Among the 6 tested interpolation methods, Natural Neighbour was the method that predicted precipitation the best at monthly level with a Distance between Indices of Simulation and Observation (DISO) of 0.51. Radial Basis Functions and Inverse Distance Weighting provided the highest precipitation accuracies, respectively, for winter and autumn (with DISO values of 0.44 and 0.50, respectively), and for spring and summer seasons (with DISO values of 0.50 and 0.63, respectively). Underestimations on the ERA5-Land precipitation estimates were observed when compared to the most accurate interpolation methods both at monthly (25%) and seasonal temporal scales (21% in winter and summer, 36% in autumn), with the exception for spring. The performance was significantly improved when the interpolation estimates were corrected with local observations (with RMSD values ranging from 35.29 mm to 26.46 mm at monthly scale, and from 23.33–55.34 mm to 23.15–37.88 mm at seasonal level). The spatial distribution of the estimation errors associated to precipitation obtained from ERA5-Land reanalysis revealed a significant positive correlation (p value <0.05) with the altitude variation in each ERA5-Land cell within the basin under study. These results confirm the good performance on the combined use of alternative precipitation data sources, while adjustments are required to reduce site-specific uncertainties due to local microclimatic conditions occurring at the basin scale. • Monthly precipitation was estimated most accurately by deterministic interpolators. • ERA5-Land underestimated precipitation obtained by deterministic interpolators. • BIAS correction procedure improved the accuracy of the precipitation estimates. • Topography heterogeneity worsened the accuracy of ERA5-Land precipitation estimates. Soon, water scarcity is expected to worsen due to several factors including the population growth and the climate change. To address this, the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) mandates an increase in the water use efficiency of agrosystems. In this context, the aim of the study was to provide a novel methodological approach, based on the use of satellite-based classification algorithms (i.e., artificial neural networks, ANN, and the Optical Trapezoid Model, OPTRAM), agro-hydrological modelling (i.e., satellite-based ArcDualK c model versus traditional FAO-56 approach) combined with different sources of agrometeorological data (i.e., ground-based versus ERA5 Land data), for mapping the irrigated crops and determining their irrigation water requirements (IWR) at the irrigation district level. The study was carried out, during the period 2019–20, in an irrigation district, named "Quota 102,50" (Eastern Sicily, Italy) and managed by the local reclamation consortium. The use of ANN and of OPTRAM allowed to obtain an accurate detection of the irrigated crops, with overall accuracy of 82 % and 88 %, respectively during 2019–20. The IWR retrieved with the ArcDualK c model and the standard FAO-56 approach were generally underestimated in comparison to the volumes supplied by the farmers. The best performance resulted when the ArcDualK c model was implemented with ERA5 Land data, with average values of coefficient of determination, residual standard error and slope of 0.99, 975.31 m3 and 0.78, respectively, during 2019–20. The outputs at the district scale compared to the data declared by the reclamation consortium resulted in overestimations in terms of both irrigated areas and IWR, with absolute errors of about 1539 ha and 1431 ha, and of about 9 106 m3 and 12 106 m3, respectively, during 2019–20. In Italy, the restrictive approach for treated wastewater reuse in agriculture has led to some difficulties in promoting this practice. In order to assess the health risk associated with the use of wastewater in agriculture, an experiment was conducted in an open field near the constructed wetland (CW) system of San Michele di Ganzaria (Eastern Sicily), during the irrigation seasons 2004-2009. In particular the impact on tomato crops of drip and sub-drip irrigation with treated municipal wastewater, as well as effects of wastewater reuse on the irrigation system, main production features, hydrological soil behaviour, and microbial soil and products contamination were investigated. Notwithstanding the fact that globally CW effluents did not match microbiological standards for wastewater reuse of Italian legislation, the median infection risk (function of the recommended tolerable additional disease burden of 10-6 DALY (disability-adjusted life year) loss per person per year) suggested by the 2006 World Health Organization Guidelines for rotavirus, Campylobacter and Ctyptosporidium for lettuce irrigation under unrestricted irrigation scenario was achieved. In Mediterranean countries, water shortage is becoming a problem of high concern affecting the local economy, mostly based on agriculture. The problem is not only the scarcity of water in terms of average per capita, but the high cost to make water available at the right place; at the right time with the required quality. In these cases, an integrated approach for water resources management including wastewater is required. The management should also include treated wastewater (TWW) reclamation and reuse, especially for agricultural irrigation, in Italy, TWW reuse is regulated by a quite restrictive approach (Ministry Decree, M.D. 185/03), especially for some chemical compounds and microbiological parameters. The aim of the paper is the evaluation of TWW reuse potential in Sicily. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was built at regional level to quantify and locate the available TWW volumes. In particular, the characteristics of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were integrated, through the GIS, with data on irrigation district areas. Moreover, in order to evaluate the Italian approach for reuse practice in agriculture, the water quality of different TWW effluents was analysed on the basis of both the Italian standards and the WHO guidelines. Abstract: The hydraulic behaviour and effluent pollutant concentrations in a pilot-scale two-stage subsurface flow constructed wetland for treatment of municipal wastewater have been simulated. The experimental pilot plant is located in San Michele di Ganzaria (Eastern Sicily) and consists of four lines of two-stage subsurface flow constructed wetlands for secondary or tertiary treatment of municipal wastewater. The first stage, for each line, consists of a horizontal flow bed, while in the second stage a vertical flow bed operates for two lines and a horizontal flow bed for the other two. Phragmites sp. was used as vegetation in two lines while the other two lines are without plants. The HYDRUS-2D software was applied to describe flow and single-solute transport, while the multi-component reactive transport module CW2D was used to model the transformation and elimination processes of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus. Tracer studies and chemical wastewater analyses were carried out to calibrate and validate the transport model. In general, the simulation results obtained show a good match with the measured data for water flow, tracer experiments and pollutant removal processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The study aims to investigate the effects of reclaimed urban wastewater for irrigation on tomato fruit quality and hydrological soil behaviour. Tomato plants were drip and sub-drip irrigated under field conditions during the 2004 growing season in Eastern Sicily (Italy). Different drip and sub-drip laterals and filtering technologies were tested during the trial; the most suitable irrigation technology was identified by data processing including emission uniformity, flow reduction and filter performance computations. The hydraulic properties and microbial soil contamination were determined before and after wastewater application. Tomato crop production quality and microbial plant contamination were investigated during the trial. Wastewater application resulted in increased microbial contamination (Escherichia coli 3×103 MPN/100mL; Faecal Streptococci 1.2×103 MPN/100mL) on the soil surface. A disturbed layer of soil was observed characterized by reduced soil porosity and a consequent decrease in water retention and hydraulic conductivity. The negligible microbial contamination of fruit and washing solution (up to 40MPN/100mL) suggested that the treated wastewater can be used as a valid alternative for irrigation of tomatoes. The study aims to identify the responses of citrus orchards (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck), grown under typical Mediterranean climatic conditions, to deficit irrigation (DI) regimes applied over more than a decade (2010-2020). In particular, the DI regimes were declined at the study site in terms of sustained deficit irrigation, regulated deficit irrigation, partial drying of the root-zone, with increasing severity of the water deficit, from 25% to 50% of the crop evapotranspiration, using surface and sub-surface micro-irrigation techniques. Long-term monitoring was set up for identifying the main processes acting at the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) level through direct in situ measurements of mass and energy fluxes (i.e., via micrometeorological technique) and the estimation of ETc and transpiration fluxes (i.e., via sap flow method), and the soil-plant-water processes (via geoelectrical techniques). In addition, the main physiological, qualitative, and quantitative parameters were evaluated since the beginning of the experiment. The results of the long-term experiment demonstrated the great adaptability of the crop species to sustain even the highest water reductions without substantial alterations of the main marketable productive and qualitative characteristics, evidencing the importance of controlling the SPAC dynamics for correctly applying the water restriction regimes. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) crops are important agricultural commodities in water‐limited environments across the globe, yet modelling of CAM productivity lacks the sophistication of widely used C3 and C4 crop models, in part due to the complex responses of the CAM cycle to environmental conditions. This work builds on recent advances in CAM modelling to provide a framework for estimating CAM biomass yield and water use efficiency from basic principles. These advances, which integrate the CAM circadian rhythm with established models of carbon fixation, stomatal conductance and the soil–plant‐atmosphere continuum, are coupled to models of light attenuation, plant respiration and biomass partitioning. Resulting biomass yield and transpiration for Opuntia ficus‐indica and Agave tequilana are validated against field data and compared with predictions of CAM productivity obtained using the empirically based environmental productivity index. By representing regulation of the circadian state as a nonlinear oscillator, the modelling approach captures the diurnal dynamics of CAM stomatal conductance, allowing the prediction of CAM transpiration and water use efficiency for the first time at the plot scale. This approach may improve estimates of CAM productivity under light‐limiting conditions when compared with previous methods. This work uses a mathematical description of the CAM circadian rhythm to predict CAM biomass accumulation and transpiration in the field. The use of hydrogeophysical methods provides insights for supporting optimal irrigation design and management. In the present study, the electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) was applied for monitoring the soil water motion patterns resulting from the adoption of water deficit scenarios in a micro-irrigated orange orchard (Eastern Sicily, Italy). The relationship of ERI with independent ancillary data of soil water content (SWC), plant transpiration (T) and in situ measurements of hydraulic conductivity at saturation (Ks, i.e., using the falling head method, FH) was evaluated. The soil water motion patterns and the maximum wet depths in the soil profile identified by ERI were quite dependent on SWC (R2 = 0.79 and 0.82, respectively). Moreover, ERI was able to detect T in the severe deficit irrigation treatment (electrical resistivity increases of about 20%), whereas this phenomenon was masked at higher SWC conditions. Ks rates derived from ERI and FH approaches revealed different patterns and magnitudes among the irrigation treatments, as consequence of their different measurement scales and the methodological specificity. Finally, ERI has been proved suitable for identifying the soil wetting/drying patterns and the geometrical characteristics of wet bulbs, which represent some of the most influential variables for the optimal design and management of micro-irrigation systems. The study evaluates the accuracy of measured and estimated crop evapotranspiration fluxes (ETc) on Citrus in a semiarid Mediterranean climate (Sicily, Italy). Specifically, ETc rates derived from in situ techniques [eddy covariance (EC) and sap flow heat pulse velocity (HPV)] and modelling approaches [Food and Agricultural Organization of the United States (FAO) Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 56 (FAO-56) single and dual crop coefficient (Kc)] were compared under deficit irrigation scenarios. Results of the comparison showed that the single and dual Kc approaches provided similar ETc estimates (292 and 324 mm), even if these approaches overestimated ETc measured by EC (ETEC) (17% and 30% respectively). HPV was able to show transpiration (T) reductions caused by deficit irrigation strategies when compared with T under full irrigation condition (ranging from 70% to 82%). Overall, the assessed methodologies were able to capture ETc trends, but the selection of the most appropriate one will depend on the specific crop and study site characteristics. Tree rooting strategies are driven by external and internal factors such as climate conditions (rain frequency, wind direction), soil structure and crop type. In order to ensure water efficiency for irrigated crops, it is essential to know how each crop adapts its rooting strategy. We couple Mise-a-la-masse (MALM) with Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) for investigating orange tree roots undergoing different irrigation strategies (Partial Root-zone Drying – or PRD - versus Full Irrigation). This is a totally novel approach giving an overall picture of roots structure and functioning in the subsoil. Our results show clear differences of rooting extent between different irrigation strategies, and identify privileged direction of root development due to distinct RWU patterns. These results are corroborated also by seasonal monitoring of evapotranspiration (ET) and soil water content (SWC), which exhibit very large differences in the soil water distribution in space and time for the trees undergoing different irrigation schedules. Deep tillage can be applied to face high-density soil horizons by improving the root system's access to deeper layers. In this sense, soil and ecosystem services related to nutrients cycling and water recharge can be improved. In this study, the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water content (θ) were inferred using two-dimensional electrical resistivity (ER) surveys, that were applied to explore the soil profile treated by deep tillage under different citrus rootstocks (RS) implantation. A seasonal scale ER monitoring (Spring 2018, Summer 2019, and Winter 2019) was carried out at a selected study area, characterized by Ultisols and located in Southeastern Brazil. Three different citrus RS-types, represented by the varieties 'Cravo Santa Cruz lemon' (CSC), 'Sunki Tropical Tangerine' (ST), and 'Citrandarin Indio' (CI). Deep tillage was adopted before RS citrus-types planting by opening furrows and subsoiling up to 0.6 m depth. The interrows citrus plants were covered with Brachiaria decumbens (Syn. Urochloa) in all citrus RS-type plots. A native forest area ('Forest') was used as reference for all θ evaluations. The model for the ER-θ relationships was determined from measurements conducted on soil samples in the laboratory. Root water uptake (RWU), in terms of θ changes, was evaluated at the different treatments under study. The obtained results proved the suitability of ER method for identifying the ER-θ dynamics in the Ultisol profiles over time. Lower and more stable θ values were obtained in the 'Forest' and interrow areas. Among the evaluated citrus RS-types, CSC showed the highest water use efficiency due to the greatest root system development. Wine quality is the final outcome of the interactions within a vineyard between meteorological conditions, terrain and soil properties, plant physiology and numerous viticultural decisions, all of which are commonly summarized as the terroir effect. Associations between wine quality and a single soil or topographic factor are usually weak, but little information is available on the effect of terrain (elevation, aspect and slope) as a compound micro-terroir factor. We used the topographic wetness index (TWI) as a steady-state hydrologic and integrative measure to delineate management zones (MZs) within a vineyard and to study the interactions between vine vigor, water status and grape and wine quality. The study was conducted in a commercial 2.5-ha Vitis vinifera 'Cabernet Sauvignon' vineyard in Israel. Based on the TWI, the vineyard was divided into three MZs located along an elongate wadi that crosses the vineyard and bears water only in the rainy winter season. MZ1 was the most distant from the wadi and had low TWI values, MZ3 was closest to the wadi and had high TWI values. Remotely sensed crop water stress index (CWSI) was measured simultaneously with canopy cover (as determined by normalized difference vegetation index; NDVI) and with field measurements of midday stem water potential (Ψstem) and leaf area index (LAI) on several days during the growing seasons of 2017 and 2018. Vines in MZ1 had narrow trunk diameter and low LAI and canopy cover on most measurement days compared to the other two MZs. MZ1 vines also exhibited the highest water stress (highest CWSI and lowest Ψstem), lowest yield and highest wine quality. MZ3 vines showed higher LAI on most measurement days, lowest water deficit stress (Ψstem) during phenological stage I, highest yield and lowest wine quality. Yet, in stage III, MZ3 vines exhibited a similar water deficit stress (CWSI and Ψstem) as MZ2, suggesting that the relatively high vigor in MZ3 vines resulted in higher water deficit stress than expected towards the end of the season, possibly because of high water consumption over the course of the season. TWI and its classification into three MZs served as a reliable predictor for most of the attributes in the vineyard and for their dynamics within the season, and, thus, can be used as a key factor in delineation of MZs for irrigation. Evapotranspiration (ET) estimation is important for understanding energy exchanges and water cycles. Remote sensing (RS) is the main method used to obtain ET data over large scales. However, owing to surface heterogeneities and different model algorithms, ET estimated from RS products with different spatial resolutions can cause significant uncertainties, whose causes need to be thoroughly analyzed. In this study, the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) model was selected to explore spatial resolution influences on ET simulations. Three satellite datasets (Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)) were selected to independently estimate ET in SEBAL model to identify the influence of the spatial scale on ET estimation, and analyze the effects and causes of scale aggregation. Results indicated that: (1) the spatial distributions of ET estimated from the three satellite datasets were similar, with the MODIS-based ET having the largest uncertainty; and (2) aggregating input parameters had limited changes in the net radiation and soil heat fluxes. However, errors in the sensible heat and latent heat fluxes were relatively larger, which were caused by changes in the selection of hot and cold pixels and the NDVI and surface albedo parameters during scale aggregation. The scale errors caused by the model mechanisms were larger than those caused by the land use/cover pattern in the SEBAL model. An adjusted satellite-based model was proposed with the aim of improving spatially distributed evapotranspiration (ET) estimates under plant water stress conditions. Remote sensing data and near surface geophysics information, using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), were used in a revised version of the original dual crop coefficient (Kc) FAO-56 approach. Sentinel 2-A imagery were used to compute vegetation indices (VIs) required for spatially estimating ET. The potentiality of the ERT technique was exploited for tracking the soil wetting distribution patterns during and after irrigation phases. The ERT-derived information helped to accurately estimate the wet exposed fraction (few) and therefore the water evaporated from the soil surface into the dual Kc FAO-56 approach. Results, validated by site-specific ET measurements (ETEC) obtained using the eddy covariance (EC) technique, showed that ERT-adjusted ET estimates (ETERT) were considerably reduced (15%) when compared with the original dual Kc FAO-56 approach (ETFAO), soil evaporation overestimation being the main reason for these discrepancies. Nevertheless, ETFAO and ETERT showed overestimations of 64% and 40% compared to ETEC. This is because both approaches determine ET under standard conditions without water limitation, whereas EC is able to determine ET even under soil water deficit conditions. From the comparison between ETEC and ETERT, the water stress coefficient was experimentally derived, reaching a mean value for the irrigation season of 0.74. The obtained results highlight how new technologies for soil water status monitoring can be incorporated for improving ET estimations, particularly under drip irrigation conditions.
