Hepatitis C (HCV) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as the leading indication for liver transplantation in the Western world. Spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) remains one of the pressing problems of modern obstetrics. Allen and Corner first isolated progesterone and proposed the name because of its pro-gestational activity (Allen 1930). Progesterone prolongs pregnancy via a range of actions in the myometrium, cervix and placenta which, when exploited pharmacologically, might delay or even prevent PTB.
