In this numerical study, we propose dual-modulated topological pillared phononic crystal (PnC) plates and demonstrate their application in achieving frequency-selective waveguiding of Lamb-wave valley-edge states. We show that both the radius and the height of the pillars in the honeycomb unit cell can be varied, allowing a generalized parameter space to obtain the complete topological bandgaps and two groups of distinct valley Hall phases for designing topological waveguides operating in different frequency ranges. Accordingly, we construct different types of phase domain walls to support valley-edge states using the dual-modulated PnC plates with a lattice constant of 2000 μm and with topological bandgaps opened around the Dirac cone frequency of 426 kHz. The numerical results show that the valley-edge states emerge to cover different frequency ranges and exhibit robust backscattering immunity when propagating along zigzag paths with sharp corners. Furthermore, the transport path of the valley-edge states can be designed to be highly dependent on the operating frequency in different domain walls. Consequently, we design a straight waveguide and three multichannel waveguides to demonstrate frequency-dependent switchable transmission and selective channeling of valley-edge states, respectively. Tetrahedral liquids exhibit intriguing thermodynamic and transport properties because of the various ways tetrahedra can be packed and connected. Recently, an unusual temperature dependence of the stretching exponent β in a model tetrahedral liquid ZnCl2 from Tm + 85 K to Tm + 35 K has been reported using neutron-spin echo spectroscopy. This discovery stands in sharp contrast to other glass-forming liquids. In this study, we conducted neural network force field driven molecular dynamic simulations of ZnCl2. We found a non-monotonic temperature dependence of β from liquid to supercooled liquid temperatures. Further structural decomposition and dynamic analysis suggest that this unusual dynamic behavior is a result of the competition between the decrease in the diversity of tetrahedra motifs (structural heterogeneity) and the increase in glassy dynamic heterogeneity. Water confined within nanochannels with specific functionalities serves as the foundation for a variety of emerging nanofluidic applications. However, the structure and dynamics of the confined liquid are susceptibly influenced by practically hard-to-avoid defects, yet knowledge of this fact remains largely unexplored. Here, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we elucidate the significant influence of geometric and charge defects on one-dimensional confined water. We show that the two types of defects can both reshape the water density distribution by constraining the translocation of water molecules along the circumferential direction. In addition to structural alterations, collective translocation and rotation of water slabs arise during transportation under external pressure. Below the temperature threshold marking the initiation of liquid-solid transition, the geometric defect retards water diffusion through a pinning effect, while the charge defect induces an anti-freezing effect. The latter is attributed to the electrostatic interaction between the charge defect and water molecules that hinders the formation of a stable hydrogen bond network by disrupting molecular dipole orientation. Consequently, this behavior results in a reduction in the number and lifetime of hydrogen bonds within the phase transition interval. The distinct roles of the two types of defects could be utilized to control the structure and dynamics of confined liquids that may result in distinct functionalities for nanofluidic applications. Dimensionality reduction often serves as the first step toward a minimalist understanding of physical systems as well as the accelerated simulations of them. In particular, neural network-based nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods, such as autoencoders, have shown promising outcomes in uncovering collective variables (CVs). However, the physical meaning of these CVs remains largely elusive. In this work, we constructed a framework that (1) determines the optimal number of CVs needed to capture the essential molecular motions using an ensemble of hierarchical autoencoders and (2) provides topology-based interpretations to the autoencoder-learned CVs with Morse–Smale complex and sublevelset persistent homology. Unsaturated lipids with C=C groups in their alkyl chains are widely present in the cell membrane and food. The C=C groups alter the lipid packing density, membrane stability, and persistence against lipid oxidation. Yet, molecular-level insights into the structure of the unsaturated lipids remain scarce. Here, we probe the molecular structure and organization of monolayers of unsaturated lipids on the water surface using heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy. We vary the location of the C=C in the alkyl chain and find that at high lipid density, the location of the C=C group affects neither the interfacial water organization nor the tail of the alkyl chain. Based on this observation, we use the C=C stretch HD-SFG response to depth-profile the alkyl chain conformation of the unsaturated lipid. We find that the first 1/3 of carbon atoms from the headgroup are relatively rigid, oriented perpendicular to the surface. Presented here is the optimization of a planar two-terminal perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell with a texture structure. The developed simulation model is fitted to published experimental results, and the importance of current matching in the two-terminal structure is discussed. With the texture structure optimized and considering current matching, the optimal texture structure improves J s c from 17.9 to 20.87 mA/cm 2 compared to the planar structure, as well as improving the power conversion efficiency from 25.8% to 35.9%. Furthermore, if the quality of the perovskite thin film and tunneling junction efficiency with a smaller voltage penalty can be improved, then the efficiency can be further improved to 38.13%. Electromagnetic metasurfaces can achieve effective control of electromagnetic waves and achieve effects such as blocking, enhancing, reflecting, transmitting, or deflecting electromagnetic waves, possessing electromagnetic properties that go beyond traditional materials. Existing research indicates that the dielectric substrate of metasurfaces has a significant impact on their electromagnetic properties. Increasing the substrate thickness will be beneficial for expanding the impedance bandwidth of the metasurface, and changes in dielectric constant will also have some impact on the operating frequency and bandwidth of the metasurface. A metasurface based on an air substrate was proposed through the research of dielectric materials. In addition, an ultrawideband, miniaturized, and high-gain metasurface antenna based on an air substrate is designed. The overall size of the designed antenna is 0.5λL × 0.5λL (where λL represents the wavelength at the lowest working frequency in free space). The measured results indicate that the proposed antenna exhibits a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of 74.3% (2.53–5.52 GHz) and a peak boresight gain of 10.1 dBi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The acidic (pKa ≈ 1.5 – 2.5) and hygroscopic nature of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate, used as a common hole-injection layer in optoelectronic devices, has a detrimental effect on device stability and is associated with well established device failure mechanisms. In this work, a process with a high green index hole-injection layer material (V 2 O 5) and low surface roughness (RMS roughness ≈ 1.3 nm) was developed for demonstrating a hybrid polymer–inorganic perovskite light-emitting diode. Test devices with the new hole-injection layer demonstrate nearly identical maximum current efficiencies (4.23 vs 4.19 cd/A), and luminous efficacies (2.99 vs 2.32 lm/W) when compared to a control device fabricated with the conventional hole-injection layer. Furthermore, the peak brightness was achieved at a current density one-third of the value for the control device. To examine the transport of holes in the above hole-injection layer, we carried out device simulations based on a physical charge control model, including defect-assisted tunneling for hole injection. Close agreement for current–voltage characteristics is observed. Experimentally measured mobility in the device and measured radiative lifetimes were found to be sufficient to achieve this agreement without resorting to the introduction of a sheet charge at the injection interface. Despite the use of a bulk-heterojunction device architecture, the model predicts high radiative recombination rates [ ≈ 5.6 × 10 22 /(cm 3 s)] in the emissive layer, consistent with the measured photophysical properties for the active film, suggesting effective passivation of non-radiative surface states. This research scrutinizes the instrumental contributions of public libraries in augmenting community resilience. The study deploys a methodological framework predicated on comprehensive literature examination and empirical investigation by focusing on the National Taiwan Library and the New Taipei City Library as paradigmatic instances. Employing a multi-layered approach of case studies and in-depth interviews with various library staff, the study aims to (1) formulate a nascent conceptual architecture of community resilience, (2) identify the multifaceted strategies public libraries employ to bolster resilience, and (3) articulate specific functional roles libraries execute in this resilience ecosystem. Empirical data coalesce into six salient categories: (1) Knowledge Curation, Skill Development, and Lifelong Learning; (2) Community Network Dynamics; (3) Human-Place Connections; (4) Infrastructure and Foundational Resources; (5) Innovation and Diversification; and (6) Public-Governmental Interface. Libraries surface as agile orchestrators in intricate socio-environmental nexuses, utilizing adaptive service models that leverage emergent community networks, enhancing intrinsic and extrinsic resilience. The roles libraries fulfill in community systems are manifold: they act as (1) Adaptive Sustainers in volatile conditions, (2) Socio-Organizational Mediators in community networking, (3) Stewards of Cultural Integrity, (4) Facilitators of Inclusive Information Access, and (5) Navigators in Collaboration with governmental and social entities. The slow Arrhenius process (SAP) is a dielectric mode connected to thermally activated equilibration mechanisms, allowing for a fast reduction in free energy in liquids and glasses. The SAP, however, is still poorly understood, and so far, this process has mainly been investigated at temperatures above the glass transition. By employing a combination of methods to analyze dielectric measurements under both isochronal and isothermal conditions, we were able to quantitatively reproduce the dielectric response of the SAP of different polymers and to expand the experimental regime over which this process can be observed down to lower temperatures, up to 70 K below the glass transition. Employing thin films of thicknesses varying between 10 and 800 nm, we further verified that the peak shape and activation energy of the SAP of poly(4-bromostyrene) are not sensitive to temperature, nor do they vary upon confinement at the nanoscale level. These observations confirm the preliminary trends reported for other polymers. We find that one single set of parameters—meaning the activation barrier and the pre-exponential factor, respectively, linked to the enthalpic and entropic components of the process—can describe the dynamics of the SAP in both the supercooled liquid and glassy states, in bulk and thin films. Bottom-up methods for coarse-grained (CG) molecular modeling are critically needed to establish rigorous links between atomistic reference data and reduced molecular representations. For a target molecule, the ideal reduced CG representation is a function of both the conformational ensemble of the system and the target physical observable(s) to be reproduced at the CG resolution. However, there is an absence of algorithms for selecting CG representations of molecules from which complex properties, including molecular electronic structure, can be accurately modeled. We introduce continuously gated message passing (CGMP), a graph neural network (GNN) method for atomically decomposing molecular electronic structure sampled over conformational ensembles. CGMP integrates 3D-invariant GNNs and a novel gated message passing system to continuously reduce the atomic degrees of freedom accessible for electronic predictions, resulting in a one-shot importance ranking of atoms contributing to a target molecular property. Moreover, CGMP provides the first approach by which to quantify the degeneracy of "good" CG representations conditioned on specific prediction targets, facilitating the development of more transferable CG representations. We further show how CGMP can be used to highlight multiatom correlations, illuminating a path to developing CG electronic Hamiltonians in terms of interpretable collective variables for arbitrarily complex molecules. Simple Summary: Urothelial carcinoma (UC) and prostatic carcinoma (PC) are common lower urinary tract cancers in dogs. The detection of the BRAF V595E gene mutation in urine samples could provide a non-invasive method for diagnosing these cancers. However, the established method requires a specialized machine, which is not available at every diagnostic center. In this research, we established a simple, low-cost, conventional PCR method to the detect gene mutation indicative of UC and PC. The results showed that this conventional PCR method could provide a reliable, non-invasive diagnostic tool, aiding in the clinical diagnosis of UC and PC in dogs, especially in settings without advanced PCR equipment. Canine urothelial carcinoma (UC) and prostatic carcinoma (PC) often present diagnostic challenges due to their anatomical locations. The BRAF V595E mutation, analogous to the human BRAF V600E mutation, has been identified in UC and PC. Digital PCR of urine is a non-invasive diagnostic method of mutation detection, but the availability of the necessary equipment is limited. This study aimed to develop a conventional PCR to detect the BRAF V595E mutation in urine and prostatic wash specimens from dogs with UC or PC. Specific primers for detecting wild-type and mutant BRAF V595E genes were validated in 34 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues, 116 urine samples, and 9 prostatic wash specimens. The results showed that the BRAF V595E mutation detection rate for UC and PC in the tissues was 51.6%. The detection rate in liquid specimens from dogs with lower urinary tract or prostate masses was 53.2%. Of the 41 cases with follow-up, 16 were further diagnosed with UC or PC, with 75% of liquid specimens from these dogs showing the BRAF V595E mutation. Background: Few studies have examined the preoperative risks and healthcare costs related to free flap revision in hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) patients. Methods: A 20-year retrospective case–control study was conducted using the Chang Gung Research Database, focusing on HPC patients who underwent tumor excision and free flap reconstruction from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2019. The impacts of clinical variables on the need for re-exploration due to free flap complications were assessed using logistic regression. The direct and indirect effects of these complications on medical costs were evaluated by causal mediation analysis. Results: Among 348 patients studied, 43 (12.4%) developed complications requiring re-exploration. Lower preoperative albumin levels significantly increased the risk of complications (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.12–5.35), especially in older and previously irradiated patients. Causal mediation analysis revealed that these complications explained 11.4% of the effect on increased hospitalization costs, after controlling for confounders. Conclusions: Lower preoperative albumin levels in HPC patients are associated with a higher risk of microvascular free flap complications and elevated healthcare costs, underscoring the need for enhanced nutritional support before surgery in this population. Tumor immunotherapies targeting PD-(L)1 exhibit anti-tumor efficacy in only 10–30% of patients with various cancers. Literature has demonstrated that a "hot tumor" which contains high T lymphocytes in the tumor microenvironment exhibits a better response to immunotherapies than a "cold tumor." This study aimed to investigate whether tumor-intrinsic IFNα and CXCL10 determine the recruitment and activation of CD8+ T cells to become "hot tumor." In this study, we found that CXCL10 overexpressed in a variety of tumors including lung, colon, and liver tumors with a correlation with PD-L1. High PD-L1 and CXCL10 are associated with better survival rates in tumor patients receiving immunotherapies. IFNs-downstream transcriptional factor IRF-1 and STAT1 were correlated with PD-L1 and CXCL10 expression. We demonstrated that IRF-1 and STAT1 were both bound with the promoters of PD-L1 and CXCL10, sharing the same signaling pathway and determining IFNs-mediated PD-L1 and CXCL10 expression. In addition, IFNα significantly increased activation marker IFNγ in PBMCs, promoting M1 type monocyte differentiation, CD4+ T, and CD8+ T cell activation. Particularly, we found that CD8+ T lymphocytes abundantly expressed CXCR3, a receptor of CXCL10, by flow cytometry, indicating that tumor-intrinsic CXCL10 potentially recruited CD8+ T in tumor microenvironment. To demonstrate the hypothesis, immunotherapy-sensitive CT26 and immunotherapy-resistant LL/2 were used and we found that CT26 cells exhibited higher IFNα, IFNγ, CXCL10, and PD-L1 levels compared to LL/2, leading to higher IFNγ expression in mouse splenocytes. Moreover, we found that CD8+ T cells were recruited by CXCL10 in vitro, whereas SCH546738, an inhibitor of CXCR3, inhibited T cell migration and splenocytes-mediated anti-tumor effect. We then confirmed that CT26-derived tumor was sensitive to αPD-L1 immunotherapy and LL/2-tumor was resistant, whereas αPD-L1 significantly increased T lymphocyte activation marker CD107a in CT26-derived BALB/c mice. In conclusion, this study revealed that CXCL10 expression is correlated with PD-L1 in tumors, sharing the same signaling pathway and associating with better immunotherapeutic efficacy. Further evidence in the syngeneic tumor models demonstrated that immunotherapy-sensitive CT26 intrinsically exhibited higher IFNα and CXCL10 compared to immunotherapy-resistant LL/2 to recruit and activate CD8+ T cells in the tumor microenvironment, exhibiting "hot tumor" characteristic of sensitizing αPD-L1 immunotherapies. OBJECTIVES: Following current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines, which recommend chest compressions at "the center of the chest," ~50% of patients experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) undergo aortic valve (AV) compression, obstructing blood flow. We used resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to elucidate the impact of uncompressed vs. compressed AV on outcomes of adult patients experiencing OHCA. DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. SETTING: Single center. PATIENTS: This study included adult OHCA patients undergoing resuscitative TEE in the emergency department. Patients were categorized into AV uncompressed or AV compressed groups based on TEE findings. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The primary outcome was sustained return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The secondary outcomes included end-tidal co2 (Etco2) during CPR, any ROSC, survival to ICU and hospital discharge, post-resuscitation withdrawal, and favorable neurologic outcomes at discharge. Additional analyses on intra-arrest arterial blood pressure (ABP) were also conducted. The sample size was pre-estimated at 37 patients/group. From October 2020 to January 2023, 76 patients were enrolled, 39 and 37 in the AV uncompressed and AV compressed groups, respectively. Intergroup baseline characteristics were similar. Compared with the AV compressed group, the AV uncompressed group had a higher probability of sustained ROSC (53.8% vs. 24.3%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 4.72; p = 0.010), any ROSC (56.4% vs. 32.4%; aOR, 3.30; p = 0.033), and survival to ICU (33.3% vs. 8.1%; aOR, 6.74; p = 0.010), and recorded higher initial diastolic ABP (33.4 vs. 11.5 mm Hg; p = 0.002) and a larger proportion achieving diastolic ABP greater than 20 mm Hg during CPR (93.8% vs. 33.3%; p < 0.001). The Etco2, post-resuscitation withdrawal, and survival to discharge revealed no significant intergroup differences. No patients were discharged with favorable neurologic outcomes. Uncompressed AV seemed critical for sustained ROSC across all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Absence of AV compression during OHCA resuscitation is associated with an increased chance of ROSC and survival to ICU. However, its effect on long-term outcomes remains unclear. Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant public health concern. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening on CRC incidence and mortality, leveraging the scale of over 1.5 million randomly selected Taiwanese and more than 11.7 million person-years of follow-up. This prospective cohort study merges data from 3 robust Taiwanese health databases: the CRC screening program, cancer registration, and death registration databases. Incidence and mortality rates of CRC were calculated based on age, sex, urbanization, and past screening status. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association between screening statuses and CRC incidence or mortality, adjusting for age, sex, and urbanization levels. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted in 2021–2022. FIT screening was associated with a 33% reduction in CRC incidence and a 47% reduction in mortality. The study identified a dose-response relationship between the fecal hemoglobin concentration (f-HbC) levels and CRC risk. Participants with consistent FIT-negative results had significantly reduced CRC incidence and mortality risks, while those with one or more positive FIT results faced increased risks. Notably, compliance with follow-up examinations after a positive FIT significantly lowered mortality risk. This large-scale study validates the efficacy of FIT screening in reducing CRC incidence and mortality. Despite recent findings indicating a paradoxical association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, the impact of HDL-C on subsequent outcomes after ischemic stroke remains unclear. The study aims to investigate the relationships between HDL-C levels and post-stroke functional outcomes while examining the potential modifying influence of HDL-C-related single nucleotide polymorphisms identified through genome-wide association studies. This cohort study included 1,310 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), all of whom had their admission serum lipid profile and genotyping information. Participants were categorized into four groups based on gender and HDL-C level. Prognostic outcomes were assessed using a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 1, 3, and 12 months post-admission. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression analysis were used to assess the associations between HDL-C levels and outcomes. The mean age of patients was 61.17 ± 12.08 years, and 69.31% were men. After adjusting confounders, patients with the highest HDL-C level group had a significantly higher risk of poor functional outcomes at 1, 3, and 12 months following stroke compared to the reference group. Restricted cubic splines depicted a nonlinear association between HDL-C levels and poor prognosis in both men and women. The ABCA1 gene rs2575876 AA genotype combined with abnormal HDL-C levels exhibited a significantly heightened risk of post-stroke adverse outcomes at 1 and 3 months compared to patients with normal HDL-C levels and GG + GA genotype. Background: S. pneumoniae (SPN) is the most common cause of pneumonia. The disease can be effectively prevented through immunisation. Since December 2020, the Malaysian Government has included the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) for all infants born on or after 1 January 2020 as part of the National Immunisation Programme (NIP). However, the epidemiology of pneumonia remains poorly understood. To fill the knowledge gap, we established a multicentre surveillance study to understand the burden of pneumococcal pneumonia among young children in Peninsular Malaysia. Methods: MY-Pneumo is a multicentre prospective case–control study conducted in three sentinel sites located in three different states of Peninsular Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, and Kelantan. A cohort of at least 500 incident cases and 500 controls is enrolled beginning in October 2021 and matched for age. Cases are hospitalised children < 5 years with radiologically confirmed pneumonia, and the controls are children without any features suggestive of pneumonia. Clinical samples, including nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) and urine, are collected according to the study protocol. Biological fluids such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and pleural fluid are obtained from invasive pneumonia disease (IPD) patients, if available. All children are tested for SPN using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and pneumococcal urine antigen test (PUAT) using BinaxNow. Discussion: Surveillance data, including carriage rate, serotype variations and the phylogeny data structure of SPN among young children in Malaysia during PCV implementation, will be generated from this study. Trends and patterns of pneumococcal serotypes by different regions are important for targeted public health strategies. Our data will provide baseline information for estimating the impact of PCV10 implementation and will influence policymakers' decisions regarding the upgrade from PCV10 to a higher-valency conjugate vaccine in Malaysia. Deploying distributed fiber-optic sensor (DFOS) technology to gather environmental parameters over expansive areas is an essential monitoring strategy in the context of comprehensive searches for anomalous places. This study utilizes a single temperature measurement channel within a commercial Raman-based distributed temperature sensing (RDTS) interrogator and divides it into two separate, uncorrelated paths to enable spatial duplex temperature measurements. The distinction between temperature events corresponding to each path in the dual separate path (DSP) in RDTS can be achieved when temperature events are concurrently occurring in the DSP. Metal or semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance the device performance of gas sensors due to their high surface area and unique electronic properties. However, this method requires additional thermal bonding with high temperatures to secure the NPs, making it unsuitable for flexible substrates. In this study, we develop a room-temperature flexible ozone (O 3) gas sensor using Mn 3 O 4 NPs on an amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) film. The Mn 3 O 4 NPs are synthesized by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method at low temperatures. The sensor with Mn 3 O 4 NPs exhibits a gas response of 4.06 against 5 ppm O 3 gas at room temperature, which is much higher than that of its pristine counterpart. It also shows excellent selectivity for O 3 over toxic gases and maintains stability over 60 days, with reproducible folding even after 500 bending cycles. Near‐infrared‐II (NIR‐II) phosphors are extensively used as NIR phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diodes across various applications. Nonetheless, their application in fiber communication remains underexplored. Furthermore, efficiency challenges persist in developing broadband NIR crystal fiber amplifiers. A series of the Y3−yAl5−xO12:xCr,yCa2+ phosphors with boosted Cr4+ concentration via calcium charge compensation is synthesized, and the optimized sample is fabricated to crystal fibers to reveal the application of the NIR‐II phosphors to fiber communication. The fabricated Cr4+‐doped crystal fiber, exhibiting broadband Cr4+ emission within 1100–1600 nm, effectively covers the high‐transmission loss region caused by water absorption in the telecommunication band. Comprehensive characterization and analyses of the Cr4+ are discussed. Y2.84Al4.9O12:0.1Cr,0.16Ca2+ crystal fiber, fabricated through phosphor synthesis, pellets’ production, and the laser‐heated pedestal growth method, exhibits superior photoluminescence compared to the commercial Cr4+‐doped Y3Al5O12 crystal fiber. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of telemedicine on ophthalmic screening and blood glucose control for patients with diabetes in remote areas of Northern Taiwan during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Telemedicine was implemented in Shiding and Wanli Districts using a 5G platform from April 2021 to December 2022. Patients with poorly controlled diabetes received real-time consultations from endocrinologists at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, 50 km away, for medication adjustment, diet control, and lifestyle recommendations. The study also provided cloud-upload blood glucose meters for self-monitoring and regular medical advice from hospital nurses. Ophthalmic screenings included fundus imaging, external eye image, and intraocular pressure measurement, with instant communication and diagnosis by ophthalmologists through telemedicine. A satisfaction questionnaire survey was conducted. Results: The study enrolled 196 patients with diabetes. Blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were significantly reduced after applying telemedicine (p = 0.01 and p = 0.005, respectively). Ophthalmic screenings led to hospital referrals for 16.0% with abnormal fundus images, 15.6% with severe cataract or anterior segment disorders, and 27.9% with ocular hypertension or glaucoma. Fundus screening rates remained high at 86.3% and 80.4% in 2022, mainly using telemedicine, comparable with the traditional screening rate in the past 5 years. The overall satisfaction rate was 98.5%. Conclusions: Telemedicine showed effectiveness and high satisfaction in managing diabetes and conducting ophthalmic screenings in remote areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with cardiac conduction defects and is a strong risk factor for heart failure. Complete left bundle branch block (cLBBB), a cardiac conduction abnormality, may have an unfavorable effect on ventricular mechanical synchrony and lead to the progression of heart failure. Once heart failure develops, it seems to act together with underlying CKD in a vicious circle. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the influence of CKD in patients with cLBBB by assessing the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We examined a hospital-based sample of 416 adult patients with cLBBB from 2010 to 2013. The eGFR was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratio for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. A total of 416 adult patients with a mean age of 71 ± 13 years were enrolled. The median follow-up period was 3.6 years. After adjusting for clinical, electrocardiographic parameters, and medication use, cox regression analysis showed that total mortality was significantly associated with older age (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01–1.05, p = 0.002), presence of congestive heart failure (HR = 2.39, 95% CI = 1.63–3.49, p < 0.001), advanced CKD (HR = 2.48, 95% CI = 1.71–3.59, p < 0.001), higher HR (HR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.01–1.03, p < 0.001) and without use of ACEI/ARB (HR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.41–0.85, p = 0.005) were independent predictors of the total mortality. Multivariate Cox hazard regression analysis demonstrated that, in comparison to patients lacking cLBBB, the coexistence of CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) among those with LBBB significantly heightened the risks of both total mortality (HR ratio of 5.01 vs. 2.40) and CV death (HR ratio of 61.78 vs. 14.41) even following adjustment for clinical covariates and ECG parameters. A dysregulated immune system is a major driver of the mortality and long-term morbidity from sepsis. With respect to macrophages, it has been shown that phenotypic changes are critical to effector function in response to acute infections, including intra-abdominal sepsis. Invariant natural killer T cells (i NKT cells) have emerged as potential central regulators of the immune response to a variety of infectious insults. Specifically, various i NKT cell:macrophage interactions have been noted across a spectrum of diseases, including acute events such as sepsis. However, the potential for i NKT cells to affect peritoneal macrophages during an abdominal septic event is as yet unknown. Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was performed in both wild type (WT) and invariant natural killer T cell knockout (i NKT−/−) mice. 24 h following CLP or sham operation, peritoneal macrophages were collected for analysis. Analysis of macrophage phenotype and function was undertaken to include analysis of bactericidal activity and cytokine or superoxide production. Within i NKT−/− mice, a greater degree of intraperitoneal macrophages in response to the sepsis was noted. Compared to WT mice, within i NKT−/− mice, CLP did induce an increase in CD86+ and CD206+, but no difference in CD11b+. Unlike WT mice, intra-abdominal sepsis within iNKT−/− mice induced an increase in Ly6C-int (5.2% versus 14.9%; P < 0.05) and a decrease in Ly6C-high on peritoneal macrophages. Unlike phagocytosis, i NKT cells did not affect macrophage bactericidal activity. Although i NKT cells did not affect interleukin-6 production, i NKT cells did affect IL-10 production and both nitrite and superoxide production from peritoneal macrophages. The observations indicate that i NKT cells affect specific phenotypic and functional aspects of peritoneal macrophages during polymicrobial sepsis. Given that pharmacologic agents that affect i NKT cell functioning are currently in clinical trial, these findings may have the potential for translation to critically ill surgical patients with abdominal sepsis. Objective: The impact of acupuncture and moxibustion on postoperative complications and adverse events (AEs) of chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer (GC) has been investigated. Through a meta-analysis of existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), this study sought to strengthen the evidentiary basis to help investigators further understand the effects of moxibustion and acupuncture on postoperative complications and AEs of chemotherapy among GC patients. Methods: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals were searched to collect RCTs on effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on gastrointestinal function and AEs among GC patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Outcome measures included postoperative gastrointestinal recovery (bowel sound recovery time, time to first flatus/defecation/feeding), the incidence of AEs (nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, and diarrhea), myelosuppression (white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelet), and immune function indicators (CD3+ and CD4+). To assess quality, the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was utilized. Review Manager 5.4 was implemented to do the meta-analysis. Results: Fifteen eligible RCTs involved 1259 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the experimental group had a significantly shorter bowel sound recovery time (MD = − 14.57, 95% CI = [− 18.97, − 10.18], P < 0.00001), time to first flatus (MD = − 17.56, 95% CI = [− 22.23, − 12.88], P < 0.00001), time to first defecation (MD = − 17.05, 95% CI = [− 21.02, − 13.09], P < 0.00001), and time to first feeding (MD = − 23.49, 95% CI = [− 28.81, − 18.17], P < 0.00001) than the control group. There were significant decreases in the incidence of nausea and vomiting (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = [0.21, 1.02], P = 0.05) and abdominal distension (RR = 0.45, 95% CI = [0.27, 0.75], P = 0.002) observed in the experimental group in comparison with the control group. The experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in white blood cell counts in comparison with to the control group (MD = 0.89, 95% CI = [0.23, 1.55], P = 0.008). The experimental group showed significantly higher levels of CD3+ (MD = 7.30, 95% CI = [1.86, 12.74], P = 0.009) and CD4+ (MD = 2.75, 95% CI = [1.61, 3.90], P < 0.00001) than the control group. Conclusion: Among GC patients, acupuncture and moxibustion can aid in gastrointestinal function recovery, reduce the incidence of AEs of surgery and chemotherapy, and improve immune function. The Matsu Islands Tern Refuge comprises eight reefs located at a relay station on the East Asian bird migration route, and it attracts many transiting, wintering, or breeding birds to inhabit and live on the reefs every year. In order to understand the compositions of plant communities as a breeding habitat for seabirds, we investigated the plant communities of the eight reefs. A total of 130 plots of 10 × 10 square meters were established, from which we found 107 species of plants in 102 genera and 51 families. Among this, we found one critically endangered (CR) species, four vulnerable (VU) species, and three near-threatened (NT) species. The result of two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and indicator value (IndVal) showed 130 samples were divided into 11 vegetation types; most of the vegetation types had significant indicator species. We also use the two-way to present the plot of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) by vegetation types and reefs. Moreover, this result reveals that these samples were more clearly cluster divided by islands. Our results reveal that the compositions and characteristics of plant communities were related clearly to the environmental factors for each reef in the Matsu Islands Tern Refuge. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that species composition of vegetation yielded high correlation with soil property, especially with soil pH. In addition, we found that the traces of bird activity is relevant to the characteristics and structures of plant communities. We found that the plant communities comprising low-grass shrubs would provide relatively soft nesting materials and sheltering effects for eggs or hatchlings for terns. Compared to low-grass shrubs, the traits of high-grass shrubs would not be beneficial to nest for breeding of terns on the ground, and no nested trace was found in these plant communities. Introduction: Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare and severe psoriasis subtype characterized by the rapid onset of coalescing sterile pustules over broad body areas and systemic inflammation. Data on its clinical course and outcomes in Taiwan are limited. We evaluated the clinical profile and outcomes of patients with GPP flares in Taiwan. Methods: This retrospective analysis included adult patients with moderate-to-severe GPP flares occurring in January 2008–December 2021. Data were extracted from medical charts and electronic health records in the Chang Gung Research Database. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS for Windows (version 9.4). Multivariate Poisson regression models were built to investigate different predictors of GPP flare rate. Results: Thirty-four patients with 81 moderate-to-severe GPP flares were identified. Of the 14 patients undergoing genetic analysis, 10 (71.4%) had an IL36RN mutation. Patients' mean age at the index GPP flare was 47.1 ± 16.5 years; 58.0% of the flares were severe, while 42.0% were moderate. Overall, 96.3% of GPP flares were treated with at least one systemic therapy, acitretin being the most prescribed (85.2%), followed by cyclosporine (45.7%) and methotrexate (18.5%). After treatment, the proportion of flares responding positively increased from 0% on day 2 to 6.2% by week 12. Patients were newly diagnosed with psoriasis (23.5%), hypertension (20.6%), diabetes mellitus (14.7%), psoriatic arthritis (2.9%), malignant tumor (8.8%), and depression/anxiety (2.9%) after enrollment. Complications occurring within 12 weeks of GPP flares included arthritis (25.9% of the flares), skin infection (8.6%), and other infections (2.5%). No fatalities were reported. In the multivariate model, former smokers, patients with hepatic disease, and patients with psoriatic arthritis had an increased GPP rate ratio (RR) of 13.33 (95% confidence interval, CI, 2.87–61.78), 14.08 (95% CI 3.04–65.29), and 34.84 (95% CI 4.77- 254.42), respectively. Contrarily, obese and rheumatoid arthritis patients had a lower GPP rate ratio of 0.21 (95% CI 0.08–0.54) and 0.07 (95% CI 0.006–0.78), respectively. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the complexity of GPP flare presentations and the need for individualized, patient-centered management approaches and continued research to improve affected individuals' care and outcomes. Foreign language learning courses can be regarded as a service operation system, and a complete foreign language learning course performance evaluation model can help improve the effectiveness of student learning. The performance evaluation matrix (PEM) is an excellent tool for evaluation and resource management decision making, and the administrator uses the satisfaction and the importance indices to establish evaluation coordinate points based on the rules of statistical testing. The coordinate points of all service items are plotted into the PEM to grasp the full picture and to make decisions on what to improve or to consider resource transfers so as to elevate the overall satisfaction of the entire service. However, plotting all the coordinate points on the PEM can only be performed by programming, which will lead to limitations in practice. Therefore, instead of the above evaluation rules, this article uses the confidence intervals of decision-making indicators to form a validity evaluation table, to decide which teaching service items should be improved, maintained, or transferred to improve the satisfaction of the entire service system. This form of performance evaluation can be completed using any commonly used word-processing software, so it is easy to apply and promote. Multiple myeloma (MM) stands as the second most prevalent hematological malignancy, constituting approximately 10% of all hematological malignancies. Current guidelines recommend upfront autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for transplant-eligible MM patients. This study seeks to delineate factors influencing post–ASCT outcomes in MM patients. Our cohort comprised 150 MM patients from Taipei Veterans General Hospital, with progression-free survival (PFS) as the primary endpoint and overall survival (OS) as the secondary endpoint. A Cox proportional hazards model was employed to discern potential predictive factors for survival. ASCT age ≥ 65 (hazard ratio [HR] 1.94, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–3.47) and the presence of extramedullary disease (HR 2.53, 95% CI 1.53–4.19) negatively impacted PFS. Conversely, treatment response ≥ VGPR before ASCT (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.31–0.87) and total CD34+ cells collected ≥ 4 × 106 cells/kg on the first stem cell harvesting (HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.32–0.87) were positively associated with PFS. For OS, patients with ISS stage III (HR 2.06, 95% CI 1.05–4.04), the presence of extramedullary disease (HR 3.92, 95% CI 2.03–7.58), light chain ratio ≥ 100 before ASCT (HR 7.08, 95% CI 1.45–34.59), post–ASCT cytomegalovirus infection (HR 9.43, 95% CI 3.09–28.84), and a lower conditioning melphalan dose (< 140 mg/m2; HR 2.75, 95% CI 1.23–6.17) experienced shorter OS. In contrast, post–ASCT day + 15 absolute monocyte counts (D15 AMC) > 500/µl (HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.17–0.79) and post–ASCT day + 15 platelet counts (D15 PLT) > 80,000/µl (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.24–0.94) were correlated with improved OS. Significantly, early PLT and AMC recovery on day + 15 predicting longer OS represents a novel finding not previously reported. Other factors also align with previous studies. Drastic increases in myofiber number and size are essential to support vertebrate post-embryonic growth. However, the collective cellular behaviors that enable these increases have remained elusive. Here, we created the palmuscle myofiber tagging and tracking system for in toto monitoring of the growth and fates of ~5000 fast myofibers in developing zebrafish larvae. Through live tracking of individual myofibers within the same individuals over extended periods, we found that many larval myofibers readily dissolved during development, enabling the on-site addition of new and more myofibers. Remarkably, whole-body surveillance of multicolor-barcoded myofibers further unveiled a gradual yet extensive elimination of larval myofiber populations, resulting in near-total replacement by late juvenile stages. The subsequently emerging adult myofibers are not only long-lasting, but also morphologically and functionally distinct from the larval populations. Furthermore, we determined that the elimination-replacement process is dependent on and driven by the autophagy pathway. Altogether, we propose that the whole-body replacement of larval myofibers is an inherent yet previously unnoticed process driving organismic muscle growth during vertebrate post-embryonic development. We present a monolithic metalens free of chromatic aberration over the 8–12 μm wavelength range for thermal imaging. The metalens consists of nano-donut-pillars for dispersion engineering. The proposed metalens design is based on a telecentric optical system, which effectively eliminates off-focus distortion and aberration, enhancing overall imaging quality. Offering a 90° field of view, the metalens ensures uniform focal spot sizes within a 45° field angle across the working wavelength. This enables the capture of high-quality thermal images with sharp images and minimal distortion. With a diameter of 5.75 mm, the metalens is suitable for integration into commercial thermal imaging cameras. Background: For in vitro fertilization (IVF), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels in the trophectodermal (TE) cells of biopsied blastocysts have been suggested to be associated with the cells' developmental potential. However, scholars have reached differing opinions regarding the use of mtDNA levels as a reliable biomarker for predicting IVF outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to assess the association of mitochondrial copy number measured by mitoscore associated with embryonic developmental characteristics and ploidy. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the developmental characteristics of embryos and mtDNA levels in biopsied trophectodermal cells. The analysis was carried out using time-lapse monitoring and next-generation sequencing from September 2021 to September 2022. Five hundred and fifteen blastocysts were biopsied from 88 patients undergoing IVF who met the inclusion criteria. Embryonic morphokinetics and morphology were evaluated at 118 h after insemination using all recorded images. Blastocysts with appropriate morphology on day 5 or 6 underwent TE biopsy and preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). Statistical analysis involved generalized estimating equations, Pearson's chi-squared test, Fisher's exact test, and Kruskal–Wallis test, with a significance level set at P < 0.05. Results: To examine differences in embryonic characteristics between blastocysts with low versus high mitoscores, the blastocysts were divided into quartiles based on their mitoscore. Regarding morphokinetic characteristics, no significant differences in most developmental kinetics and observed cleavage dysmorphisms were discovered. However, blastocysts in mitoscore group 1 had a longer time for reaching 3-cell stage after tPNf (t3; median: 14.4 h) than did those in mitoscore group 2 (median: 13.8 h) and a longer second cell cycle (CC2; median: 11.7 h) than did blastocysts in mitoscore groups 2 (median: 11.3 h) and 4 (median: 11.4 h; P < 0.05). Moreover, blastocysts in mitoscore group 4 had a lower euploid rate (22.6%) and a higher aneuploid rate (59.1%) than did those in the other mitoscore groups (39.6–49.3% and 30.3–43.2%; P < 0.05). The rate of whole-chromosomal alterations in mitoscore group 4 (63.4%) was higher than that in mitoscore groups 1 (47.3%) and 2 (40.1%; P < 0.05). A multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze associations between the mitoscore and euploidy of elective blastocysts. After accounting for factors that could potentially affect the outcome, the mitoscore still exhibited a negative association with the likelihood of euploidy (adjusted OR = 0.581, 95% CI: 0.396–0.854; P = 0.006). Conclusions: Blastocysts with varying levels of mitochondrial DNA, identified through biopsies, displayed similar characteristics in their early preimplantation development as observed through time-lapse imaging. We report a catalyst family of high-entropy alloy (HEA) atomic layers having three elements from iron-group metals (IGMs) and two elements from platinum-group metals (PGMs). Ten distinct quinary compositions of IGM-PGM-HEA with precisely controlled square atomic arrangements are used to explore their impact on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). The PtRuFeCoNi atomic layers perform enhanced catalytic activity and durability toward HER and HOR when benchmarked against the other IGM-PGM-HEA and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Operando synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory simulations confirm the cocktail effect arising from the multielement composition. This effect optimizes hydrogen-adsorption free energy and contributes to the remarkable catalytic activity observed in PtRuFeCoNi. In situ electron microscopy captures the phase transformation of metastable PtRuFeCoNi during the annealing process. • GM1 attenuates neurological dysfunction in ischemic stroke rats. • The neuroprotective effect of GM1 is related to SPTBN1-mediated signaling. • SPTBN1 may be a potential target in ischemic stroke and related diseases. Monosialoganglioside GM1 (GM1) has long been used as a therapeutic agent for neurological diseases in the clinical treatment of ischemic stroke. However, the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective function of GM1 is still obscure until now. In this study, we investigated the effects of GM1 in ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) brain injury models. Middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO/R) rats were treated with GM1 (60 mg·kg−1·d−1, tail vein injection) for 2 weeks. The results showed that GM1 substantially attenuated the MCAO/R-induced neurological dysfunction and inhibited the inflammatory responses and cell apoptosis in ischemic parietal cortex. We further revealed that GM1 inhibited the activation of NFκB/MAPK signaling pathway induced by MCAO/R injury. To explore its underlying mechanism of the neuroprotective effect, transcriptome sequencing was introduced to screen the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). By function enrichment and PPI network analyses, Sptbn1 was identified as a node gene in the network regulated by GM1 treatment. In the MCAO/R model of rats and oxygen-glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R) model of primary culture of rat cortical neurons, we first found that SPTBN1 was involved in the attenuation of I/R induced neuronal injury after GM1 administration. In SPTBN1 -knockdown SH-SY5Y cells, the treatment with GM1 (20 μM) significantly increased SPTBN1 level. Moreover, OGD/R decreased SPTBN1 level in SPTBN1 -overexpressed SH-SY5Y cells. These results indicated that GM1 might achieve its potent neuroprotective effects by regulating inflammatory response, cell apoptosis, and cytomembrane and cytoskeleton signals through SPTBN1. Background and Aim Methods Results Conclusions Esophageal cancer significantly contributes to US cancer mortality, with notable racial disparities. This study aims to provide updated esophageal cancer mortality trends among Black and White adults from 1999 to 2020.CDC‐WONDER was used to identify Black and White adults in the United States from 1999 to 2020. We calculated age‐standardized mortality rates, absolute rate differences, and rate ratios to compare the mortality differences between these populations.From 1999 to 2020 in the United States, there were 303 267 esophageal cancer deaths, with significant racial disparities. The age‐adjusted mortality rate for Black adults fell from 6.52 to 2.62 per 100 000, while for White adults, it declined from 4.19 to 3.97 per 100 000, narrowing the racial mortality gap. Gender‐wise, the study showed a decrease in the mortality rate from 3.31 to 2.29 per 100 000 in Black women, but an increase from 1.52 to 1.99 per 100 000 in White women. Among young men, the rate dropped in Black men from 12.82 to 6.26 per 100 000 but rose in White men from 9.90 to 10.57 per 100 000. Regionally, Black adults in the Midwest and South initially had higher mortality rates than Whites, but this gap reduced over time. By 2020, Black men had lower mortality rates across all regions.Over the last two decades, age‐adjusted esophageal cancer mortality decreased in Black adults but stabilized in White adults, reflecting distinct cancer trends and risk factors. Limited data exist on long-term renal outcomes in patients with hyperglycemic crisis (HC) as initial type 2 diabetes presentation. We evaluated the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) development in those with concurrent HC at diagnosis. Utilizing Taiwan's insurance claims from adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during 2006–2015, we created HC and matched non-HC cohorts. We assessed incident CKD/diabetic kidney disease (DKD) by 2018's end, calculating the hazard ratio (HR) with the Cox model. Each cohort comprised 13,242 patients. The combined CKD and DKD incidence was two-fold higher in the HC cohort than in the non-HC cohort (56.47 versus 28.49 per 1000 person-years) with an adjusted HR (aHR) of 2.00 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.91–2.10]). Risk increased from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (aHR:1.69 [95% CI 1.59–1.79]) to hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) (aHR:2.47 [95% CI 2.33–2.63]) and further to combined DKA-HHS (aHR:2.60 [95% CI 2.29–2.95]). Subgroup analysis in individuals aged ≥ 40 years revealed a similar trend with slightly reduced incidences and HRs. Patients with HC as their initial type 2 diabetes presentation face a higher CKD risk than do those without HC. Introduction Methods Results Conclusion Specific assays of plasma rivaroxaban level are not always readily available with short turnaround time, which hamper the management of urgent clinical situations. In this study, we aimed to build a predictive formula of plasma rivaroxaban levels from international normalized ratio (INR) value and validated in real world clinical situations.Ninety‐four patients who were taking rivaroxaban participated in the study. Patients were randomized into testing cohort and validation cohorts. The prediction formula was built from the testing cohort and then validated in validation cohort. The predictive performance was further validated on real‐world clinical requests.The root mean square error (RMSE) of the predictive formula for the testing and validation cohorts were 61.81 and 69.32 ng/mL, respectively. Background: The present study compares the anatomical and functional outcomes (best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT)) among membrane peeling with or without SF6 tamponade in patients with epiretinal membrane. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with macular pucker who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and membrane peeling in a tertiary center in Taiwan from January 2021 to December 2022. Subjects were categorized into with or without SF6 tamponade groups (SF6 group and BSS group). Postoperative intraocular pressure and complications were documented. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the prognostic factors during follow-up. Results: A total of 89 eyes were enrolled, including 34 eyes in the BSS group and 55 eyes in the SF6 group. The mean age was 66 years old, and a female predilection was demonstrated. Both groups possessed statistically significant improvement in BCVA and CMT after the operation. There was no significant difference in CMT between the groups at any time of observation, yet we observed significant differences in baseline BCVA and BCVA at last follow-up among the two groups. Both groups yielded an approximate enhancement of LogMAR 0.3 in BCVA postoperatively. There was no significant difference noted in postoperative IOP between the two groups. Conclusion: Membrane peeling with or without SF6 tamponade yields comparable outcomes anatomically and functionally. Circadian rhythm disruptions and heat stress can cause gut microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal barrier damage, increasing the risk of inflammatory bowel disease. However, whether eating according to the circadian rhythm during the day when the ambient temperature is higher or eating against the circadian rhythm at night when the ambient temperature is relatively suitable, is better for the gut health of diurnal animals in summer has not been clarified. In this study, growing pigs were randomly assigned to a daytime‐restricted feeding or nighttime‐restricted feeding (NRF) group and raised for 18 days in summer with mild heat stress. Our results showed that NRF alleviated heat stress in pigs, as reflected by increased feed intake and decreased drinking. Microbiome analysis revealed that NRF increased the diversity of gut microbiota and abundance of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs)‐producing bacteria and decreased the abundance of gram‐negative and potentially pathogenic bacteria, thereby increasing SCFAs and reducing lipopolysaccharide production in the colon. These changes enhanced colonic barrier function and reduced colitis and systemic inflammation by upregulating tight junction proteins and mucin. Our findings indicate that although nighttime eating does not align with the biological habits of pigs, consuming food at a relatively suitable ambient temperature is more beneficial for gut health and homeostasis during hot seasons. Our research provides a reference for guiding the healthy feeding of farm animals in summer and a basis for developing a lifestyle that promotes gut health for individuals in tropical regions. Background: Rickettsia and related diseases have been identified as significant global public health threats. This study involved comprehensive field and systematic investigations of various rickettsial organisms in Yunnan Province. Methods: Between May 18, 2011 and November 23, 2020, field investigations were conducted across 42 counties in Yunnan Province, China, encompassing small mammals, livestock, and ticks. Preliminary screenings for Rickettsiales involved amplifying the 16S rRNA genes, along with additional genus- or species-specific genes, which were subsequently confirmed through sequencing results. Sequence comparisons were carried out using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). Phylogenetic relationships were analyzed using the default parameters in the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) program. The chi-squared test was used to assess the diversities and component ratios of rickettsial agents across various parameters. Results: A total of 7964 samples were collected from small mammals, livestock, and ticks through Yunnan Province and submitted for screening for rickettsial organisms. Sixteen rickettsial species from the genera Rickettsia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia, and Wolbachia were detected, with an overall prevalence of 14.72%. Among these, 11 species were identified as pathogens or potential pathogens to humans and livestock. Specifically, 10 rickettsial organisms were widely found in 42.11% (24 out of 57) of small mammal species. High prevalence was observed in Dremomys samples at 5.60%, in samples from regions with latitudes above 4000 m or alpine meadows, and in those obtained from Yuanmou County. Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis were broadly infecting multiple genera of animal hosts. In contrast, the small mammal genera Neodon, Dremomys, Ochotona, Anourosorex, and Mus were carrying individually specific rickettsial agents, indicating host tropism. There were 13 rickettsial species detected in 57.14% (8 out of 14) of tick species, with the highest prevalence (37.07%) observed in the genus Rhipicephalus. Eight rickettsial species were identified in 2375 livestock samples. Notably, six new Rickettsiales variants/strains were discovered, and Candidatus Rickettsia longicornii was unambiguously identified. Conclusions: This large-scale survey provided further insight into the high genetic diversity and overall prevalence of emerging Rickettsiales within endemic hotspots in Yunnan Province. The potential threats posed by these emerging tick-borne Rickettsiales to public health warrant attention, underscoring the need for effective strategies to guide the prevention and control of emerging zoonotic diseases in China. To avoid risks of mucosal infection from contact lenses removal, a contact lens plunger is often used. Given various types of contact lens plungers available on the market, no study has yet been done on mechanical effects of the contact lens plunger on contact lens removal. Here, this study used finite element analysis to investigate the effects of plunger size and plunger position on the removal of soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. First, we established finite element analysis models for the plunger, contact lens, cornea, and aqueous humor. The plunger is made of mostly silicone rubber, and the contact lenses are mainly made of soft and hard material. The part of the plunger used for removal was located either at the central or the edged position, with pulling 1 mm distance. The main parameters observation indicators of in this study were the reaction force at the fixed end of the cornea, aqueous humor, the von Mises stress of the plunger, the contact lenses, and the cornea. Results of this study showed that when a plunger of a larger diameter was used, the reaction force of the plunger was also larger, especially when applied to RGP lenses, which required a slightly larger force (∼0.27 N). Also, when removing a RGP lens from the edge, there was a greater stress at the edge of the contact lens (2.5799 MPa), and this caused a higher stress on both the cornea (0.0165 MPa) and the aqueous humor (0.00114 MPa). When using a plunger with a larger diameter to remove a RGP lens, although a larger force required, the relatively larger contact area likely reduced the stress on the cornea and aqueous humor, thereby reducing the risk of eye injury. Three Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains were isolated from traditional Chinese pickle and characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain 74-4T was most closely related to the type strains of Lacticaseibacillus suibinensis and Lacticaseibacillus suilingensis, having 99.9% and 100% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, respectively, and that strains 419-1.2T and 262-4 were most closely related to the type strains of Companilactobacillus heilongjiangensis, Companilactobacillus nantensis, Companilactobacillus huachuanensis, and Companilactobacillus nuruki, having 98.5–99.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities. The phylogenomic trees indicated that strain 74-4T was related to the type strains of L. suibinensis and L. suilingensis, and that strains 419-1.2T and 262-4 were related to the type strains of C. heilongjiangensis, C. nantensis, C. huachuanensis, and Companilactobacillus zhachilii. The ANI and dDDH values between strain 74-4T and type strains of phylogenetically related species were less than 92.7% and 49.9%, respectively. The ANI and dDDH values between strains 419-1.2T and 262-4 and type strains of phylogenetically related species were less than 93.4% and 51.7%, respectively. Based upon the data of polyphasic characterization obtained in the present study, two novel species, Lacticaseibacillus salsurivasis sp. nov. and Companilactobacillus muriivasis sp. nov., are proposed and the type strains are 74-4T (= JCM 35890T = CCTCC AB 2022414T) and 419-1.2T (= JCM 35891T = CCTCC AB 2022413T), respectively. In 2018, Nouioui et al. proposed that Bifidobacterium coryneforme was a later synonym of Bifidobacterium indicum on the basis of the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value (85.0%) between B. coryneforme LMG 18911T and B. indicum LMG 11587T. However, in the study of Scardovi et al. (1970), the type strains of B. indicum and B. coryneforme only exhibited 60% DNA-DNA hybridization value. In the present study, the genomes of B. coryneforme CGMCC 1.2279T, B. coryneforme JCM 5819T, B. indicum JCM 1302T, B. indicum CGMCC 1.2275T, B. indicum DSM 20214T, B. indicum LMG 27437T, B. indicum ATCC 25912T, B. indicum KCTC 3230T, B. indicum CCUG 34985T, were sequenced, and the taxonomic relationship between B. coryneforme and B. indicum was re-evaluated. On the basis of the results presented here, (i) ATCC 25912 and DSM 20214 deposited by Vittorio Scardovi are two different strains; (ii) the type strain of B. indicum is ATCC 25912T (= JCM 1302T = LMG 27437T = CGMCC 1.2275T = KCTC 3230T), and not DSM 20214 (= BCRC 14674 = CCUG 34985 = LMG 11587); (iii) B. coryneforme and B. indicum represent two different species of the genus Bifidobacterium; (iv) strain DSM 20214 (= BCRC 14674 = CCUG 34985 = LMG 11587) belongs to B. coryneforme. Purpose: To study the effectiveness of federated learning in in vitro fertilization on embryo evaluation tasks. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort analysis. Two datasets were used in this study. The ploidy status dataset consisted of 10,065 embryo records, 3760 treatments, and 2479 infertile couples from 5 hospitals. The clinical pregnancy dataset consisted of 4495 embryo records, 4495 treatments, and 3704 infertile couples from 4 hospitals. Federated learning and the gradient boosting decision tree algorithm were utilized for modeling. Results: On the ploidy status dataset, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of our model trained with federated learning were 71.78%, 73.10%, 69.39%, 69.72%, and 73.46% for 5 hospitals respectively, showing an average increase of 2.5% compared to those of our model trained without federated learning. On the clinical pregnancy dataset, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of our model trained with federated learning were 72.03%, 56.77%, 61.63%, and 58.58% for 4 hospitals respectively, showing an average increase of 3.08%. Conclusions: Federated learning can improve data privacy and data security and meanwhile improve the performance of embryo selection tasks by leveraging data from multiple sources. (1) Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces oxidative stress and inflammation with negative effect on pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether DM increases the risk of pregnancy loss and to identify other potential risk factors; (2) Methods: We identified female patients diagnosed with DM from 2000–2015 in the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database according to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9 CM) code 250. The event was pregnancy loss, defined as ICD-9 CM codes 630–639, which was tracked until 31 December 2015. The control group included 4-fold more non-DM female patients who were matched for age and disease severity. Multivariate Cox regression was employed to determine the risk factors associated with pregnancy loss; (3) Results: The hazard ratio (HR) for the risk of pregnancy loss due to DM was 1.407 (95% confidence interval: 1.099–1.801, p = 0.007), and the risk factors for older age, gynecological disorders and inflammation disorders were included. (4) Conclusions: The study concluded that women with DM have a greater risk of experiencing pregnancy loss. Healthcare providers should proactively manage and educate diabetic patients to reduce their risk of pregnancy loss. OBJECTIVES The evaluation of Fontan-associated liver disease is often challenging. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging can detect hepatic fibrosis from capillary perfusion and diffusion abnormalities from extracellular matrix accumulation. This study investigated its role in the evaluation of liver disease in Fontan patients and explored possible diagnostic methods for early detection of advanced liver fibrosis. METHODS Stable adult Fontan patients who could safely be examined with magnetic resonance imaging were enrolled, and blood biomarkers, transient elastography were also examined. RESULTS Forty-six patients received diffusion-weighted imaging; and 58.7% were diagnosed with advanced liver fibrosis (severe liver fibrosis, 37.0%, and cirrhosis 21.7%). Two parameters of hepatic dysfunction, platelet counts (Spearman's ρ: –0.456, P  = 0.001) and cholesterol levels (Spearman's ρ: –0.383, P  = 0.009), decreased with increasing severity of fibrosis. Using transient elastography, a cut-off value of 14.2 kPa predicted the presence of advanced liver fibrosis, but with a low positive predictive value. When we included platelet count, cholesterol, post-Fontan years and transient elastography values as a composite, the capability of predicting advanced liver fibrosis was the most satisfactory (C statistic 0.817 ± 0.071, P  < 0.001). A cut-off value of 5.0 revealed a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 82%. CONCLUSIONS In Fontan patients, diffusion-weighted imaging was helpful in detecting liver fibrosis that was correlated with hepatic dysfunction. A simple score was proposed for long-term surveillance and early detection of advanced liver disease in adult Fontan patients. The study explores the fabrication and evaluation of a micro thermoelectric generator (MTG) with long-length thermocouples (TCs) through the utilization of a commercial complementary metal oxide semiconductor process. The MTG consists of 23 TCs, and its performance is intricately linked to the temperature difference (T diff) between the cold and hot sides of these TCs. An increase in T diff leads to higher output voltage and power for the MTG. To enhance T diff, the TCs are designed to be 700 µ m in length, and an innovative design has been implemented on the cold side of the TCs, creating a suspended structure to improve heat dissipation A post-process is essential for achieving this suspended TC structure. The results demonstrate that the TC structure is fully suspended and remains undamaged. The measured outcomes reveal an output voltage of 13.8 mV when the T diff reaches 3.5 K. Under these conditions, the MTG exhibits a voltage factor of 2.76 mV mm−2K−1. Furthermore, at a T diff of 3.5 K, the maximum output power reaches 2.1 nW. Stimulated by the recent experimental results on the fully-charm tetraquark states, we systematically calculate the mass spectra of the fully-charm tetraquark states in 8 [ c c ¯ ] ⊗ 8 [ c c ¯ ] color configuration via QCD sum rules. By constructing nine 8 [ c c ¯ ] ⊗ 8 [ c c ¯ ] type currents with quantum numbers J PC = 0 - + , 0 - - , 1 - + , 1 + - , 1 - - and 2 + + , we perform analytic calculation up to dimension six in the operator product expansion (OPE). We find the fully-charm tetraquark states with J PC = 1 + - , 2 + + lie around 6.48 ∼ 6.62 GeV while the fully-charm tetraquark states with J PC = 0 - + , 0 - - , 1 - - , 1 - + are about 6.85 ∼ 7.02 GeV. Notably, the mass predictions for the c c ¯ c c ¯ tetraquarks, specifically those with J PC = 2 + + , align with the broad structure identified by LHCb. Moreover, the masses of fully-charm tetraquarks with J PC = 0 - + and 1 - + are anticipated to match closely with the mass of X(6900), considering the margin of error. Such findings hint at the presence of some 8 [ c c ¯ ] ⊗ 8 [ c c ¯ ] components within the di- J / ψ structures observed by LHCb. BACKGROUND: Psychrophilic bacteria can survive in a unique living environment. OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of low temperature adaptation and the physiological function of thermophilic metabolic genes. METHOD: Serratia marcescens strain F13 stored in microbial laboratory was cultured at 5 ∘ C, 10 ∘ C and 25 ∘ C respectively, and the obtained strains were sequenced by high-throughput transcriptome. Serratia marcescens strain CAV1761 was used as the reference strain. The data produced by transcriptome sequencing were statistically analyzed by biostatistics software such as soapnuke, soap and edger. The differentially expressed genes were found based on the gene expression, and analyzed by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that there were 718 differential genes in F13-10 vs F13-5 comparison group, 1614 differential genes in F13-25 vs F13-5 comparison group and 1636 differential genes in F13-25 vs F13-10 comparison group. GO function enrichment analysis showed that the GO term mainly enriched by different genes in the three comparison groups was mostly related to the migration and transport of cellular or subcellular components, cell localization and transmembrane transporter activity, as well as cilia or flagella dependent cell movement. In the enrichment analysis of KEGG pathway, the three comparison groups all enriched the largest number of differential genes in the branch pathway of KEGG metabolism, followed by the branch pathway of environmental information processing.
