The analytic information theory of discrete distributions was initiated in 1998 by C. Knessl, P. Jacquet and S. Szpankowski who addressed the precise evaluation of the Renyi and Shannon entropies of the Poisson, Pascal (or negative binomial) and binomial distributions. They were able to derive various asymptotic approximations and, at times, lower and upper bounds for these quantities. Here, we extend these investigations in a twofold way. First, we consider a much larger class of distributions, the Rakhmanov distributions , where denote the sequences of discrete hypergeometric-type polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to the weight function ω(x) of Poisson, Pascal, binomial and hypergeometric types, i.e. the polynomials of Charlier, Meixner, Kravchuk and Hahn. Second, we obtain the explicit expressions for the relative Fisher information of these four families of Rakhmanov distributions with respect to their respective weight functions. This paper presents two new sets of nonseparable discrete orthogonal Charlier and Meixner moments describing the images with noise and that are noise-free. The basis functions used by the proposed nonseparable moments are bivariate Charlier or Meixner polynomials introduced by Tratnik et al. This study discusses the computational aspects of discrete orthogonal Charlier and Meixner polynomials, including the recurrence relations with respect to variable x and order n. The purpose is to avoid large variation in the dynamic range of polynomial values for higher order moments. The implementation of nonseparable Charlier and Meixner moments does not involve any numerical approximation, since the basis function of the proposed moments is orthogonal in the image coordinate space. The performances of Charlier and Meixner moments in describing images were investigated in terms of the image reconstruction error, and the results of the experiments on the noise sensitivity are given. It has been shown in Ferreira et al. (Adv. Appl. Math 31:61–85, []), López and Temme (Methods Appl. Anal. 6:131–196, []; J. Cpmput. Appl. Math. 133:623–633, []) that the three lower levels of the Askey table of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials are connected by means of asymptotic expansions. In this paper we continue with that investigation and establish asymptotic connections between the fourth level and the two lower levels: we derive twelve asymptotic expansions of the Hahn, dual Hahn, continuous Hahn and continuous dual Hahn polynomials in terms of Hermite, Charlier and Laguerre polynomials. From these expansions, several limits between polynomials are derived. Some numerical experiments give an idea about the accuracy of the approximations and, in particular, about the accuracy in the approximation of the zeros of the Hahn, dual Hahn, continuous Hahn and continuous dual Hahn polynomials in terms of the zeros of the Hermite, Charlier and Laguerre polynomials.
