The aim of this archaeometric study is to recover information regarding technological processes and raw materials used for the production of ceramic sherds coming from five central and Eastern German sites, between Lower Saxony and Saxony states. The ceramic fragments have been investigated by a multi-spectroscopic approach: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) were employed to characterize both ceramic bodies and glazes. Moreover the innovative application of Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) on ceramic findings has been proposed and evaluated. Chemical and mineralogical composition, as well as microstructure, of ceramic mixture and glaze are correlated to native material composition and firing temperature, which have become a fundamental features in archaeometric research and play a key role in understanding the provenance of the pottery and its production techniques. The multi-spectroscopic approach applied in this work has enabled the ability to characterize the ceramic sherds and to investigate through non-destructive techniques both ceramic glaze and matrix giving information regarding the raw materials and pigments/colourants used, and regarding firing temperature and technology. The present study carried on using complementary methods suggests different raw material sources and temperature kilns. These data are in agreement with the location of ceramic sites and with data in literature. Abstract: The occurrence of several plasma-wall interaction processes, eventually affecting the overall system performances, is expected in a working fusion device chamber. Monitoring the changes in the composition of the plasma facing component (PFC) surface layer, as a result of erosion and redeposition mechanisms, can provide useful information on the possible plasma pollution and fuel retention. To this aim, suitable diagnostic techniques able to perform depth profiling analysis of the superficial layers on the PFCs have been developed. Due to the constraints commonly found in fusion devices, the measuring apparatus must be non invasive, remote and sensitive to light elements. These requirements make LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) an ideal candidate for on-line monitoring the walls of current and of next generation (as ITER) fusion devices. LIBS is a well established tool for qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative analysis of surfaces, with micro-destructive characteristics and some capabilities for stratigraphy. In this work, LIBS depth profiling capability has been verified for the determination of the composition of multilayer structures simulating plasma facing components covered with deposited impurity layers. A new experimental setup has been designed and realized in order to optimize the characteristics of a LIBS system working in vacuum conditions and remotely, two noticeable properties for an ITER-relevant diagnostics. Abstract: The laser-based techniques have been shown to be a very powerful tool for artworks characterization and are used in the field of cultural heritage for the offered advantages of minimum invasiveness, in situ applicability and high sensitivity. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, in particular, has been applied in this field to many different kinds of ancient materials with successful results. In this work, a fragment of a Roman wall painting from the archaeological area of Pompeii has been investigated by LIBS. The sample elemental composition resulting from LIBS measurements suggested the presence of certain pigments. The ratio of the intensities of different lines related to some characteristic elements is proposed as an indicator for pigment recognition. The depth profiling permitted to put in evidence the presence of successive paint layers with different compositions. Abstract: Since its early applications, Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy has been recognized as a useful tool for solid state chemical analysis. However the quantitative accuracy of the technique depends on the complex processes involved in laser induced plasma formation, ablation, atomization, excitation and ion recombination. Problems arising from laser target coupling, matrix effect, fractionation in target vaporization, local thermodynamic equilibrium assumption and interferences from additional air ionization should be properly addressed in order to obtain reliable quantitative results in laboratory to be used as starting point during field campaigns. As selected case studies carried out within the authors'' research team show, a proper selection of laser parameters and, in general of experimental conditions, for laboratory data acquisition is required in order to minimize the mentioned problems both in case of calibration curves and calibration free approaches. In particular, the choice of reference samples for measuring calibration curves is of crucial importance in laboratory experiments, in relation both to matrix effect and local thermodynamic equilibrium, to be carried out at comparable conditions in terms of temperature and electron density. A model for the ablation process aimed to the optimization of experimental conditions in some case studies (copper alloys) has been specifically developed in order to account for the target stoichiometry in the plasma. Problems related to the limit of detection for quantitative trace analysis have been considered in analyzing data collected both inside and outside the local thermodynamic equilibrium window, in cases characterized by a fixed contamination threshold. Single and double pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy was applied to the analysis of copper based alloys samples, in order to investigate the material ablation process under two different experimental conditions. An Nd:YAG laser, emitting at the fundamental wavelength (1064 nm) for a fixed value of total energy with the same pulse width, has been used for both set-up configurations. Certified samples of copper based alloys were examined in order to investigate the effect of their different compositions on the ablation process efficiency. The craters produced by the laser on the samples surfaces were measured by a contact profilometer in order to evaluate the mass of ablated material. In this respect the differences in behaviour of the single and the double pulse ablation for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), respectively, have been considered. The dependence, under the same experimental conditions, of the LIBS background emission of the different ablated masses of the material has also been investigated, by looking for normalization algorithms for quantitative data reduction. The behaviour of some peculiar intensity ratios, suitable for building calibration curves, has been studied in order to evaluate the trend in fractionated evaporation on going from the single pulse to the double pulse technique. Abstract: The use of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a possible diagnostic tool for thin films elemental composition has been investigated. For this kind of application, LIBS can be advantageous with respect to other conventional techniques of analysis routinely used to determine thin films stoichiometry. LIBS was applied to ferromagnetic thin films of FeHfO in which the electric and magnetic properties are strictly correlated to the stoichiometry. The influence of the laser parameters on the ablation process of a thin film on a substrate has been investigated, together with a study of different substrates in order to identify the film–substrate coupling that would make the LIBS technique applicable also to films whose thickness is less than the laser ablation depth. Finally, the possibility of obtaining semi-quantitative data from the analysis of FeHfO thin films using the evaluated Fe/Hf atomic ratio was investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy was applied to test the possibility of detecting and identifying asbestos in different samples in view of the perspective at field operation without sample preparation which is peculiar to this technique. Several like-resin materials were first investigated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, in order to find an asbestos container assuring safe laboratory operation during the material characterization aimed to identify indicators suitable for a quick identification on field. Successively, spectra of asbestos samples of both in serpentine and amphibole forms were measured and the variability in elemental composition was calculated from the emission spectra. Ratios of intensities of characteristic elements were tested as indicators for asbestos recognition. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy results were compared with those obtained by analyzing the same asbestos samples with a scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, a good correlation was found for Mg/Si and Fe/Si, thus showing the capability of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy as a diagnostic tool for this category of materials. In particular, it was demonstrated that the method based on two indicators derived from laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy intensity ratios allows to discriminate between asbestos and cements in single shot measurements suitable to field operation. Nowadays scientific study of Cultural Heritage accompanies most of the time historical artistic evaluation and an assessment of the conservation state by humanistic experts and restorers. Several laboratory methods with high sensitivity are well established (ICP-MS, FTIR,...), and many methods for in situ rough characterization of large surface are widely diffused (thermovision, UV photography,...), in addition to instrumentation for punctual analysis to be applied also in field (XRF, colorimetry,...). However, the request for systems that can provide rapid detailed characterization on large surface in any storage conditions is still a hot topic. This is combined with the ever-increasing demand for digital material for documentation, fruition and study. Laser-based systems, and in particular Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF), Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, due to the characteristics of these sources and the detectors to which they can be coupled, respond well to these needs. The TECFIS-DIM (Diagnostic and Metrology) Laboratory of the ENEA center of Frascati (Rome, Italy) in the last decade has put an effort to develop more and more compact and efficient laser systems for in situ material characterization on cultural heritage surfaces. Here two prototypal LIF systems have been used to characterize marble surfaces treated with ancient and modern materials and a rapid recognition and mapping method has been developed and tested thanks to the individuation of discriminant spectral features. The recent development of laser scanners in environmental diagnostics made possible to implement their prototypes for remote characterization of cultural heritage (CH) surfaces. Specific data analysis algorithms have been developed to handle large data set acquired in high resolution operation. Non-invasive, or at least micro-invasive methodologies applied on real CH targets have shown the possibility to obtain information on surface appearance, morphology and composition. The added value of optical and spectroscopic integrated sensors is discussed for some significant case studies addressed both to a deep knowledge of the artifacts (materials and methods of realization) and to their structural characterization. Analysis and understanding of wall erosion, material transport and fuel retention are among the most important tasks for ITER and future devices, since these questions determine largely the lifetime and availability of the fusion reactor. These data are also of extreme value to improve the understanding and validate the models of the in vessel build-up of the T inventory in ITER and future D-T devices. So far, research in these areas is largely supported by post-mortem analysis of wall tiles. However, access to samples will be very much restricted in the next-generation devices (such as ITER, JT-60SA, W7-X, etc) with actively cooled plasma-facing components (PFC) and increasing duty cycle. This has motivated the development of methods to measure the deposition of material and retention of plasma fuel on the walls of fusion devices in situ, without removal of PFC samples. For this purpose, laser-based methods are the most promising candidates. Their feasibility has been assessed in a cooperative undertaking in various European associations under EFDA coordination. Different laser techniques have been explored both under laboratory and tokamak conditions with the emphasis to develop a conceptual design for a laser-based wall diagnostic which is integrated into an ITER port plug, aiming to characterize in situ relevant parts of the inner wall, the upper region of the inner divertor, part of the dome and the upper X-point region. The scheme and construction of an electro-optical probe able to collect charge and detect optical emission from expanding dense partially ionized vapour clouds are reported. The instrument can be applied to phenomena such as dust impact ionization and solid target laser ablation. First, results of measurements of expanding plasma cloud formed upon ablating W target are presented. Abstract: Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a potential candidate to monitor the layer composition and fuel retention during and after plasma shots on specific locations of the main chamber and divertor of ITER. This method is being investigated in a cooperative research programme on plasma devices such as TEXTOR, FTU, MAGNUM-PSI and in other various laboratorial experiments. In this paper LIBS results from targets of D–H-rich carbon films and mixed W–Al–C deposits on bulk tungsten substrates are reported (simulating ITER-like deposits with Al as proxy for Be). Two independent methods, one to determine the relative elemental composition and the other the absolute contents of the target based on the experimental LIBS signals are proposed. The results show that LIBS has the capability to provide the relative concentrations of the elements on the deposited layer when the experimental conditions on the targets surface are identical to the calibration samples.
