A 2-D Lattice Boltzmann Method, designed to ensure stability at high Reynolds numbers, is combined with an Actuator Line Model to compute the loads on a two-bladed vertical axis wind turbine. Tests on the kernel size at a high mesh resolution reveal that a size equal to half of the full chord length yields the most accurate results. The aerodynamic load solution is validated against a fully resolved Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) output, demonstrating high correlation, and enabling an assessment of near wake and downstream effects. The model's adaptability to various rotor operating conditions is confirmed through tests at high and low tip-speed ratios. Additionally, a Biot–Savart-based Vortex Model (VM) is employed for further comparison, showing good agreement with the Lattice Boltzmann output. The results indicate that the Highly Stable Lattice Boltzmann Method integrated with the Actuator Line Model enhances the accuracy of flow field resolution and effectively captures complex aerodynamic phenomena, making it a valuable tool for simulating vertical axis wind turbines. Motivated by the suboptimal performances observed in existing compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems, this work focuses on the efficiency optimization of CAES through thermal energy storage (TES) integration. The research explores the dependence of CAES performance on power plant layout, charging time, discharging time, available power, and cavern volume. Hence, a range of solutions are examined, encompassing both solid and liquid TES options, alongside the potential utilization of external air heaters. Inefficiencies in solid TES due to significant retention of thermal power within the medium after complete discharge are identified and mitigated through optimization strategies. In addition, solutions to prevent ice formation at the low-pressure expander phase are suggested to avoid icing issues in CAES layouts with liquid TES. Through this comprehensive investigation, the study provides valuable insights into enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of CAES systems. By constructing a volume–power–time conversion table, the research contributes to the advancement of CAES technology, facilitating more efficient energy storage and utilization, thereby addressing critical challenges in the field of energy storage. The competitiveness of large-scale offshore wind parks is influenced by the intermittent power generation of wind turbines, which impacts network service costs such as reserve requirements, capacity credit, and system inertia. Buffer power plants smooth the peaks in power generation, distribute electric power when the wind is absent or insufficient, and improve the capacity factor of wind parks and their profitability. By substituting the variable pressure storage with an underwater variable volume air reservoir and reducing the wastage of compression heat using liquid Thermal Energy Storage (TES), which eliminates the combustor, the plant design allows overcoming the most common drawbacks of CAES plants. Underwater Compressed Air Energy Storage (UW-CAES) plants are investigated with a thermodynamic model to drive the power plant design toward efficiency maximization. Functional maps, constrained on the plant pressure ratio and the number of compressor/turbine phases with inter-refrigerated/inter-heating phases, are drawn by solving the model iteratively for the heat exchangers' effectiveness to meet the target turbine discharge temperature, selected in advance to avoid unfeasible mathematical solutions. The design of hydrokinetic plants in hydropower canals involves the choice of the array layout, rotor geometry, turbine spacing, and array spacing, and necessitates the control of the resultant backwater to avoid upstream flooding hazards. Several works in the literature have shown that array power optimization is feasible with small spacings between the arrays, disregarding the limitation in the power output induced by backwater upstream. In this study, a 1-D channel model with a Double Multiple Streamtube code and wake sub-models are integrated to predict an array layout that will maximize the array power. The outputs of the conducted sensitivity analysis confirm that this design enabled improved power conversion with closely spaced turbines and largely spaced arrays, thus allowing for a partial recovery of the total head variation for a new array deployed upstream. In addition to the quantitative assessment of the mechanical power converted, the tool enables depth control from the downstream undisturbed flow station to the backwater exhaustion far upstream, thereby increasing its flexibility. Furthermore, it overcomes the limitations of actuator disc models by considering rotor's fluid dynamic losses. The results show that power output linearly scales for a limited number of arrays (≤5), whilst the variation in water depth variation follows a power law from the most downstream array towards upstream, regardless of the plant size. Finally, the maximum upstream inflow depth is demonstrated to become asymptotic for large multi-array plants under ideal conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
