53 striped surmullet, Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei, Mullidae), were collected from the Marmara Sea, Turkey and examined for metazoan parasites in July 2017. The parasitic copepod, Peniculus fistula fistula Nordmann, 1832 (Pennellidae), was collected from all the hosts, both on fins and body surface. This is the second report of this copepod in Turkish marine waters. Although Peniculus fistula fistula was reported for the first time on Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 by Öktener (2008), there was an indefiniteness and doubt about the occurrence of this parasite. Abstract: Estimates of the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation for dolphinfish obtained from 42 studies conducted by different laboratories in different parts of the world, using different aging methods, were assembled for this study. The results formed two distinct negatively correlated lines on a ln(L ∞) and ln(K) plot, and aging material was identified as the major cause for the systematic bias. The barbugede Pampelfisk, Coryphaena apus Brünnich, 1783, long assumed to be a dolphin, is actually the senior synonym of the Black Pomfret, Parastromateus niger (Bloch, 1795) and the type host of Cymothoa eremita (Brünnich, 1783). Several early works synonomized C. apus with Stromateus paru Bloch, 1786; however, this form was confused with Stromateus (now Peprilus) paru Linnaeus, 1758, at the time and not associated with Stromateus (now Parastromateus) niger. Later, other works synonomized S. paru Bloch with P. niger, but the C. apus synonomy was apparently forgotten. The occurrence and abundance of two isopod parasites, Cymothoa eremita and C. stromei, and a copepod, Lernanthropus koenigii, conclusively demonstrate that Coryphaena apus is P. niger. Two other copepods, Synestius caliginus and Thysanote appendiculata, show S. paru Bloch is P. niger. The original common name of C. apus "bare-bellied pomfret" also identifies P. niger. Coryphaena apus, Cymothoa eremita, S. niger, and S. paru Bloch were all collected at about the same time and place by the same missionaries in southeast India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  A rapid and reliable method of dolphinfish species identification was designed based on PCR amplification of diagnostic DNA fragments from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. It consisted in a tetraplex reaction producing a positive control amplicon and species-specific fragments in Coryphaena hippurus and C. equiselis. It was successfully tested in specimens of known identity and in nominal C. hippurus samples among which two C. equiselis were discovered. This approach has significant advantages over other molecular species identification methods and may help in determining species composition of mixed catches, and in forensic and food control applications of dolphinfish specimens or products. The use of sagittal otoliths in discriminating stocks of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) off northeastern Brazil using multishape descriptors. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 1144–1152. The shape of sagittal otoliths from the dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) was studied to test the hypothesis that two stocks exist off the northeast coast of Brazil. In all, 82 sagittal otoliths were collected from fish caught by the artisanal fleet in two coastal regions of northeastern Brazil in December 2003 and April/May 2004. Several shape descriptors were determined [area, perimeter, rectangularity, circularity, eccentricity, fractal dimension (FD), and Fourier coefficients (FCs)] to evaluate the degree of similarity in the otoliths between regions. A three-morphotype pattern was revealed through cluster and principal component analyses based on FCs of the 30th harmonics. Apparently, this pattern is not influenced by clinal factors. Despite the great variability between otolith shapes, separation of the samples from two regions was suggested using multivariate and univariate analyses of variance for all shape descriptors and using canonical discriminant analysis. The methods successfully classified 57.1 and 69.6% of otoliths from the Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte regions, respectively. The FD was a powerful descriptor in discriminating the two stocks. Differences in the shapes of sagittal otoliths may be related to different growth rates of the species and lend credence to the belief that there are two stocks along the Brazilian coast. Six common dolphin fishes, Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei: Coryphaenidae), were collected from the Aegean Sea coastal waters of Turkey (39°29'N; 26°02'E) and examined for metazoan parasites in July 2006. The parasitic copepod, Peniculus fistula von Nordmann, 1832, was collected from the ventral fin of one specimen. This is the first report of the occurence of the parasite on C. hippurus. Abstract: Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) samples were collected over four consecutive years from four locations in the eastern central Pacific to evaluate the genetic variation in a 751bp segment of the mitochondrial NADH subunit 1 (ND1) to test for the presence of genetic population structure. Sequence analyses revealed no significant differences among collections from the same location in the different years sampled nor between locations. Mismatch distributions, estimations of population expansion parameters, and neutrality tests revealed significant fluctuations in population size in coincidence with past glacial and interglacial periods during the late Pleistocene. The low levels of nucleotide diversities and shallow coalescence of mtDNA genealogies observed were coincident with the estimated demographic parameters and neutrality tests, in suggesting the presence of important past population size fluctuations or range expansion. The prevention of the accumulation of deep lineages independently on how it was originated, probably delayed the emergence of a population divergence process which might account for the lack of genetic differences detected. Superficial stellate cells of an unknown origin were detected on the epidermis of juvenile mahi mahi, Coryphaena hippurus L., up to 60 days of age. The cells occurred in large numbers, and were detected in both wild and cultured fish. International authorities were unable to identify the organism and there was no pathology associated with the presence of the cells on the skim Because of the fine cytoplasmic interdigitations between the organism and the host cell, and the close ecological association with both wild and cultured juveniles examined, it was thought that the cells could possibly be highly modified skin cells. We report here that the spinous cells possess DNA sequences encoding 16S subunit ribosomal RNA genes distinct from those of mahi mahi, and also that restriction enzyme digests of genomic DNA from the spinous cells and from mahi mahi produced distinct patterns after electrophoretic separation. The myxosporean parasite Kudoa thyrsites (Gilchrist) is well recognised as a cause of flesh liquefaction post-mortem in several fishes from both hemispheres. The observation of this condition in cultured mahi mahi, Coryphaena hippurus L., in Western Australia led us to search for possible reservoirs of infection amongst the abundant clupeoid fishes of the area. Prevalent and severe infections were found in Sardinops sagax neopdchardus (Steindachner), which we consider to be a major reservoir host for K. thyrsites in south-west Australian coastal waters. The parasite occurred less frequently in Spratelloides robustus Ogilby. Sardineila lemuru Bleeker and Engraulis australis (Shaw) from the same waters. Infection was not detected in Hyperhphus vittatus (Castelnau), Etrumeus teres (De Kay) or Nematalosa vlatninghi (Munro), which may reflect differences in range or dietary composition. Engraulis japonicus (Temminek & Schlegel) imported from Japan were also infected, but a single sample of E. mordax Girard from California contained only an equipolar Kudoa species. These records expand the known host range of K. thyrsites to 20 species in 10 families, and several of these host species appear to be major reservoirs of infection in certain locations. Flesh spoilage due to the liquefactive effects of the parasite could occur in any of these hosts, and was seen here in S. sagax neopilchardus, S. robustus and E. japonicus in association with mature spores. Eleven wild-caught dolphin fish (Coryphaena hippurus L.) from Florida waters and 16 of the same species from an experimental mariculture facility were examined for evidence of parasitic disease. Thirteen (48.1%) were found to be infected with parasites of the digestive tract. Adults of the digenean trematode Dinurus tomatus were present in the stomach and intestine. Invasive metacercarial stages of the same species were found encysted in the somatic musculature, pericardium and stomach wall. Metacercaria were associated with mild inflammatory cell infiltration of the musculature and gastric submucosa and, in one case, focal degeneraa Hon of the muscle fibres. In addition, invasive plerocercoids of an unidentified cestode species occurred in the stomach and intestine of a moribund juvenile fish; the associated lesions included degeneration and ulceration of the gastric and intestinal mucosa, with haemorrhage and granuloma formation in submucosal tissues.
