This article presents information about the book "Orson Welles: The Road to Xanadu," by Simon Callow. Callow has brought a welcome expertise to the discussion of Welles's stage work. He knows what Edward Gordon Craig, Max Reinhardt and Erwin Piscator did as directors and how Welles's theater grew out of theirs. The first play Welles directed professionally, had something to do with social justice. It was the play "Macbeth" for the Federal Theatre Project of the W.P.A. After this, Welles went on to stage the musical drama "The Cradle Will Rock," written by the dedicated Communist Marc Blitzstein.
