ABSTRACT Hormones mediate life‐history trade‐offs. In female mammals, such trade‐offs have been studied predominantly in the contexts of oestrogen, progesterone and prolactin. We evaluate the hypothesis that prenatal and postnatal testosterone levels structure and regulate trade‐offs in females involving components of reproduction and survival. This hypothesis is predicated on the observation that testosterone confers competition‐related and survival‐related benefits, but also reproduction‐related costs, to female mammals. The hypothesis is supported by field and laboratory data from diverse non‐human animals, and data from healthy women. Most broadly, relatively low testosterone level in females has been associated with earlier, faster and higher offspring production, greater attractiveness to males, and reduced dominance or competitiveness, whereas higher testosterone level is associated with delayed and reduced reproduction but increased dominance, status, aggression, and resource accrual. The magnitude of testosterone‐mediated trade‐offs is expected to depend upon the strength of female–female competition, which represents some function of species‐specific ecology, behaviour and mating system. Testosterone‐associated trade‐offs have, until now, been virtually ignored in studies of female life history, reproductive physiology, evolutionary endocrinology, and female‐limited disease, probably due to researcher biases towards conceptualizing androgens as hormones with effects mainly restricted to males. Pragmatic communication difficulties encompass many distinct behaviours, including the use of vague and/or insufficient language, a common characteristic following traumatic brain injury (TBI) that negatively impacts psychosocial outcomes. Existing assessments evaluate pragmatic communication broadly, often with only one or two items capturing each behaviour, thus limiting sensitivity and precision to variations within each behaviour. Given that greater nuance is needed to detect subtle pragmatic communication differences and investigate underlying cognitive mechanisms, a more refined measure is critical to improve psychosocial outcomes. The Vague scale was developed to address those needs.To provide preliminary evidence supporting the novel Vague language use (Vague) scale's reliability, validity and clinical utility.The Vague scale rates each discourse sample utterance for vague language use on a 3‐point scale; the measure's Vague score represents the mean of utterance‐level ratings. Using the Vague scale, two raters naïve to diagnosis evaluated Cinderella narratives of 46 adults with severe TBI and 46 controls with no brain injury, providing reliability, construct validity and classification accuracy evidence. Vague scores were also compared to other clinical measures to gather criterion‐related validity evidence.Interrater agreement across all transcripts was moderate. Construct validity was supported by expected group differences and criterion validation, including significant relationships with increased violations of Grice's maxim of quantity and measures of lexical variation; significant relationships with psychosocial outcomes, supporting clinical utility; and nonsignificant relationships with measures of syntax and overall pragmatic communication. Classification accuracy expectedly did not support using Vague scores in isolation for diagnosis, due to unacceptable sensitivity (0.696).Evidence supported the Vague scores’ psychometric properties. Thus, the Vague scale shows promise as a measure of one distinct pragmatic communication behaviour: vague language use. Future research should apply the Vague scale to determine its sensitivity in individuals with subtle social communication challenges (e.g., mild TBI), explore its utility with more naturalistic discourse samples as part of a pragmatic communication battery, longitudinally examine changes in Vague scores, and investigate cognitive mechanisms underlying this specific pragmatic communication behaviour. Use of vague language is common following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may contribute to negative psychosocial outcomes related to employment and relationships. However, existing measures of vague language lack sensitivity and precision, limiting their utility for identifying subtle performance variations or determining the cognitive mechanisms underlying this specific pragmatic communication behaviour. The current study gathered promising reliability, validity and clinical utility evidence to support using the novel Vague language use (Vague) scale, which was developed to address these limitations. Based on complex (Cinderella) stories of adults with and without TBI, Vague scores demonstrated moderate interrater agreement and promising construct validity based on expected group differences and criterion validation, including moderate associations with related constructs and weak associations with unrelated constructs. Because pragmatic communication profiles post‐TBI can vary, classification accuracy expectedly indicated that Vague scores should not be used alone to identify communication differences post‐TBI. Vague scores show promise for documenting clients’ use of vague language and planning intervention to address associated discourse‐level challenges. Future research should investigate applying the Vague scale to naturalistic discourse samples (1) as part of a battery that sensitively and precisely identifies pragmatic communication differences and (2) as a tool for investigating cognitive mechanisms underlying vague language use, with the goal of improving interventions that support pragmatic communication and enhance psychosocial outcomes. The UK retail sector is witnessing substantial increases in violence and abuse towards its customer-facing workers in the post-pandemic era. The costs of this violence to employee wellbeing, local community stability and economic losses to the retail industry are manifold. COVID-19 has been implicated as a central driver in these increases, as the legacy of abuse in retail settings during the pandemic lockdowns continues to affect workers across the sector. This article adopts a series of conceptual tools from critical criminology to argue that rising violence against retail staff cannot be explained by the pandemic alone. Rather, criminology must consider these trends against a background of longer-standing increases in interpersonal violence and rapidly shifting cultural currents under late-neoliberal capitalism. This article also reflects on the hardening of consumer subjectivities and declining deference to mechanisms of authority that continue to manifest under postmodern cultural conditions. These all serve as prominent features in the contextual aetiology of abuse against retail staff and render the possibility of addressing retail violence through deterrence and prevention measures problematic. Multiple large cat tracks were found within Chilly Bowl Cave, Arkansas, representing at least two individuals of the genus Panthera. Large felid bone fragments were also found in a passageway near the tracks. These poorly preserved skeletal remains primarily consist of metapodials and phalanges and represent the North American Pleistocene jaguar, Panthera onca. Fusion of metapodial epiphyses indicate adult foot size had been reached for this large jaguar. One set of tracks is also consistent with the size and morphology of P. onca. The other tracks are much larger than is known for extant or prehistoric jaguars, and are here attributed to Panthera atrox, the American lion. An alternate hypothesis for the smaller tracks is that they could represent a younger P. atrox instead of P. onca. Regardless of the inability to identify the smaller feline prints to species, these remains and tracks from Chilly Bowl Cave record cave utilization by two separate Pleistocene felids, interpreted here as jaguar and American lion. Objective There are well-described impacts of biological rhythms on human physiology. With the increasing push for routine blood tests for preventative medical care and clinical and physiological research, optimizing effectiveness is paramount. This study aimed to determine whether it is feasible to assess diurnal variations of peripheral lymphocyte prevalence using finger prick blood in a small sample size. Methods Using polychromatic flow cytometry, the prevalence of lymphocytes was assessed using 25 µL fingertip blood samples at 8 AM and 5 PM from 8 participants. Results TH cells and B cells showed significantly higher percentages in the 5 PM samples, whereas NK cells demonstrated a significantly higher morning percentage. T cells, leukocytes, and cytotoxic T cells showed no significant changes. Conclusion The detection of diurnal variations demonstrates that small blood volumes can be used to detect lymphocyte variations. A deficiency in hydrogen sulfide has been implicated in the development and progression of diabetic chronic kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of diabetes on the H2S system in early-stage diabetic kidney disease. We characterised gene and protein expression profile of the enzymes that regulate H2S production and degradation, and H2S production capacity, in the kidney from 10-week-old C57BL6Jdb/db mice (n = 6), in age-matched heterozygous controls (n = 7), and in primary endothelial cells (HUVECs) exposed to high glucose. In db/db mice, renal H2S levels were significantly reduced (P = 0.009). Protein expression of the H2S production enzymes was differentially affected by diabetes: cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) was significantly lower in both db/db mice and high glucose-treated HUVECs (P < 0.0001; P = 0.0318) whereas 3-mercatopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) expression was higher in the db/db kidney (P < 0.0001), yet lower in the HUVECs (P = 0.0001). Diabetes had no effect on the expression of cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) in the db/db kidney (P = ns) but was associated with reduced expression in the HUVECs (P = 0.0004). Protein expression of degradation enzyme sulfide quinone reductase (SQOR) was significantly higher in db/db kidney (P = 0.048) and lower in the high glucose-treated HUVECs (P = 0.008). Immunofluorescence studies revealed differential localisation of the H2S enzymes in the kidney, including both tubular and vascular localisation, suggestive of functionally distinct actions in the kidney. The results of this study provide foundational knowledge for future research looking at the H2S system in both kidney physiology and the aetiology of chronic diabetic kidney disease. Using a duoethnological approach, supported by Jung's theory of archetypes and the layered objective psyche, the paper demonstrates how a duoethnological encounter can lead to new formulations of archetypal theory that challenge attitudes to diversity. The paper arises from the authors' desire to explore the shame and pain of colonialism, initially in a diversity workshop and later by way of duoethnological dialogue, using transcripts of recorded conversation between the authors as well as email exchange. Notions of a colonizer archetype and ethnic shadow are presented and elaborated. The six conceptualized themes in relation to the exploration of colonialism in the cultural layer of the objective psyche are as follows: (1) Belonging, (2) The layered psyche and our understanding of difference, (3) Facing the ethnic shadow, (4) The colonizing archetype in the consulting room, (5) The exploration of colonial structures in the psyche and, lastly, (6) Valuing emancipatory encounter. These themes support an argument for the praxis of societal and internal encounters in order to raise the colonizer archetype and split off shadow material to consciousness, in the hope of bringing about a personal and cultural shift away from oppression. Cerium oxide nanoparticles are promising materials as novel nanoscale therapeutics and are commonly used materials in industrial processes. Most cytotoxicity studies on cerium oxide nanoparticles are made from in-lab prepared materials making comparison between studies challenging, especially when performed on unique cell lines under non-standard conditions. Using commercially available nanoparticles we show that particle stability/agglomeration may be critical in determining the cytotoxicity in some cell lines, while in other cell lines, larger sized primary particles are linked to higher cytotoxicity, contrasting what has been reported in the literature for smaller cerium nanoparticles. To accelerate the development of cerium oxide enabled commercial processes and biomedical innovations, a clearer understanding of the interactions between cerium oxide nanoparticles and cells is needed to better understand their fate in and impact on biological systems. Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles from several manufacturers with different reported sizes and surface coatings were characterized prior to assessing their cellular toxicity. The physical characterization of these particles revealed that sizes often varied from those reported by the supplier, and that particles were heavily agglomerated when dispersed in water, resulting in a smaller surface area and larger hydrodynamic diameter upon dispersion. Cytotoxicity testing of these materials showed differences between samples; however, correlation of these differences with the physical properties of the materials was not conclusive. Generally, particles with higher surface area and smaller hydrodynamic diameter were more cytotoxic. While all samples produced an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), there was no correlation between the magnitude of the increase in ROS and the difference in cytotoxicity between different materials. The presence of institutional mechanisms to facilitate collaborative activities between operators, and consumer preferences for these activities, have not been studied in the public transport context. Exploring preferences in both intracity and intercity transport options (incorporating long distance transport components such as air services), we use random parameters logit models to analyse integrated travel choice experiments. We show that consumers have preferences for attributes resulting from operator collaboration that can deliver them better door-to-door travel options across the whole transport ecosystem, both in their own city but just as importantly, when travelling to another city. Our results suggest that the proposed method of institutional integration (MaaS 2.0 or CaaS) creates better value for respondents, such that they would be more likely to engage with integrated transport solutions rather than the default option for many, which is the car. Consumers are willing to pay for collaboration activities that inherently arise out of institutionally facilitated interaction between operators and that lead to improvements in their journey. Expansion of institutional integration such as that which may be possible through smart ticketing platforms as an institutional coordination mechanism may facilitate greater development of these features and lead to more integrated travel being chosen by consumers. Stratospheric water vapor affects the Earth's radiative balance and stratospheric chemistry, yet its future changes are uncertain and not fully understood. The influence of deep convection on stratospheric water vapor remains subject to debate. This letter presents a detailed process‐based model study of the impact of convective ice sublimation on stratospheric water vapor in response to CO2 forced climate change. The influence of convective injection is found to be limited by the vertical profile of temperature and saturation vapor pressure in the tropical tropopause layer, not by the frequency of occurrence. Lagrangian trajectory analysis shows the relative contributions to stratospheric water vapor from sublimation and large‐scale transport are approximately unchanged when CO2 is increased. The results indicate the role of convective ice injection for stratospheric water vapor in a warmer climate remains constrained by large‐scale temperatures. Water vapor enters the stratosphere in the tropics and is tightly constrained by the cold temperatures around the tropopause (around 15–17 km altitude). For the present day climate the contribution from the direct injection of ice into the stratosphere by deep convection is thought to be relatively small, but it has been suggested these may increase in a warmer climate. If convection becomes more frequent and stronger under greenhouse gas induced climate change, the response of stratospheric water vapor might be different from that implied simply by changes to tropical tropopause temperatures. This study examines the roles of convection and large‐scale temperatures and transport in determining the water budget in the tropical tropopause region in a climate model. In response to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide the model simulates increased stratospheric water vapor with a substantial contribution coming from more convective injection. However, the relative contribution of convective injection to stratospheric water vapor remains roughly constant as carbon dioxide increases. Therefore, irrespective of whether convection becomes stronger or more frequent, the impact of convective injection of water is found to be constrained by large‐scale temperatures. Quasi‐biennial oscillations (QBOs) in thirteen atmospheric general circulation models forced with both observed and annually repeating sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are evaluated. In most models the QBO period is close to, but shorter than, the observed period of 28 months. Amplitudes are within ±20% of the observed QBO amplitude at 10 hPa, but typically about half of that observed at lower altitudes (50 and 70 hPa). For almost all models, the oscillation's amplitude profile shows an overall upward shift compared to reanalysis and its meridional extent is too narrow. Asymmetry in the duration of eastward and westward phases is reasonably well captured, though not all models replicate the observed slowing of the descending westward shear. Westward phases are generally too weak, and most models have an eastward time mean wind bias throughout the depth of the QBO. The intercycle period variability is realistic and in some models is enhanced in the experiment with observed SSTs compared to the experiment with repeated annual cycle SSTs. Mean periods are also sensitive to this difference between SSTs, but only when parametrized non‐orographic gravity wave (NOGW) sources are coupled to tropospheric parameters and not prescribed with a fixed value. Overall, however, modelled QBOs are very similar whether or not the prescribed SSTs vary interannually. A portrait of the overall ensemble performance is provided by a normalized grading of QBO metrics. To simulate a QBO, all but one model used parametrized NOGWs, which provided the majority of the total wave forcing at altitudes above 70 hPa in most models. Hence the representation of NOGWs either explicitly or through parametrization is still a major uncertainty underlying QBO simulation in these present‐day experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Growing evidence suggests an association between the use of sedative‐hypnotic medications and risk of dementia. The aim of this study is to examine this association using a meta‐analysis approach. Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed) and Scopus were systematically searched for studies published in English only. The quality of studies was evaluated using the Newcastle‐Ottawa scale, and an overall odds ratio was pooled using a random‐effects model. Results: A total of 35 articles were included in the analysis. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) for dementia from all records were (OR; 1.33, 95% CI 1.19–1.49) for benzodiazepine (BZD) combined use (Subgroup‐1), (OR: 1.46, 95% CI 1.23–1.73) for short‐acting BZD use (Subgroup‐2), (OR: 1.72, 95% CI 1.48–1.99) for long‐acting BZD use (Subgroup‐3), (OR: 1.13, 95% CI 0.97–1.32) for BZDs without specification of duration of action (Subgroup‐4), (OR: 1.64, 95% CI 1.13–2.38) for the combined BZDs and Z‐drugs, (OR: 1.43, 95% CI 1.17–1.74) for Z‐drugs only, (OR: 1.14, 95% CI 0.88–1.46) for antidepressant use, (OR: 0.97, 95% CI 0.68–1.39) for antipsychotic use and (OR: 0.98, 95% CI 0.85–1.13) for anticonvulsant use. When sensitivity analysis was performed, association between overall use of BZDs and short‐acting BZDs with the increased risk of dementia disappeared after exclusion of studies that were not adjusted for age covariate (OR: 1.2, 95% CI 1.0–1.44) and (OR: 1.22, 95% CI 0.75–2.01), respectively. Adjustment for protopathic bias by introduction of a lag period showed no evidence of increased risk of dementia with the use of BZDs (Subgroup‐1) (OR: 1.14, 95% CI 0.82–1.58), Z‐drugs (OR: 1.29, 95% CI 0.78–2.13), and combined BZDs and Z‐drugs (OR: 1.51, 95% CI 0.91–2.53). Combined use of BZDs and Z‐drugs showed more positive association when only studies of non‐user design were analysed (OR: 2.75, 95% CI 2.23–3.39). Conclusions: All the investigated sedative‐hypnotics showed no association with increased risk of dementia except for BZDs. However, the observed association with BZDs did not persist after exclusion of studies with potential reverse causation and confounding by indication. This paper is the first of two linked pieces that emerge out of the AHRC-funded Chronotopic Cartographies project for the mapping of place and space in literature. The paper aims to establish the value of a topological approach for the mapping of literary texts. It is centred on Bakhtin's concept of the "chronotope" or "time-space" as the basis for digitally mapping spatial meaning in literary works. It begins by contextualizing our work in relation to the field of literary geography and cartography. It then makes a clear distinction between mapping to the real world using GIS (as is common in fields such as history or geography) and mapping relatively, using topologies, which we argue is essential for the mapping of fictional place and space. The current digital models that are closest to this project concern social network analysis and its adaptation to the mapping of character networks in literary texts. After contextualizing our work in relation to this research, we aim to provide a rationale for the use of topological models in literary mapping. A range of topological forms and their meaning for literature is examined with reference to particular examples from the Chronotopic Cartographies project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the second of two linked articles that aim to present new ways of mapping literature by means of digital tools for the twenty-first century. The preceding article articulated the need to move beyond the mapping of literary texts onto geographic sites in the world and into the mapping of space relationally in nonreferential ways by means of literary topology. This second article seeks to make a larger case for new ways of working in the digital humanities and suggests that new methods of analysis and new tools are needed. It articulates an integrated visual–verbal method of interpretation that combines the close reading of spatial meanings and structures within a text with analysis of the map series generated out of that same text in an iterative structure. It also argues for the value of layers of mapping and of comparative mapping of the same place both referentially and nonreferentially. The literary texts chosen to exemplify the method are Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. For quantitative analyses of data acquired from x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instruments to be globally comparable across industry and academia, a consistent and traceable intensity calibration method is required. ISO 5861 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 201 Surface Chemical Analysis, Subcommittee 7, Electron Spectroscopies, and describes an intensity calibration method for x‐ray photoelectron spectrometers that use quartz‐crystal monochromated Al Ka x‐rays. The method employs low‐density polyethylene reference spectra that are corrected for any instrument geometry and are traceable to the true reference spectra for gold, silver and copper held by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), UK. This international standard generates a spectrometer relative response function for use in quantitative XPS analysis that is consistent with NPL's intensity calibration method to within 5% relative error. Nursing is the single largest professional group within both hospital and community mental health care services, however the role of mental health nurses in under-defined. The nursing workforce is also coming under increasing pressure from internal and external requirements, and nurses themselves are on the frontline of providing patient care in what can be a risky and unpredictable workplace environment. This project explored via interview the ways in which mental health nurses experience and reflect on their personal and professional feelings of nursing success. Participants were 19 nurses who were employed in a range of bed-based and community mental health services in inner south eastern Melbourne. This study complies with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). The findings of the project align with existing evidence from the literature. Factors which helped mental health nurses feel successful included: therapeutic success; good teamwork; targeted education; and feedback. Barriers to success included: patients/clients do not engage or recover; poor communication amongst staff; lack of psychological safety in the workplace; and lack of respect from management. Nurses in community settings were more able than nurses in bed-based settings to: make effective use of clinical supervision; make use of targeted training and educational offerings; and practice therapeutically and holistically. Project results offer an opportunity to understand nurses' motivations and reward systems. Better understanding of these issues can improve the way mental health care services manage their workforce planning, maintain staff personal wellbeing, increase staff retention and ultimately improve patient/client care. Many of the current, Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6), General Circulation Models (GCMs) show climate sensitivity higher than currently accepted uncertainty ranges. There is a weak correlation between increases in vertical resolution and in climate sensitivity from CMIP5. In particular, the MO Hadley Centre GCM's vertical resolution has more than doubled, and its climate sensitivity has also increased substantially. We therefore compare estimates of climate sensitivity from the CMIP6 model HadGEM3‐GC3.1‐LL, with 85 levels, and a version with 242 levels. This is far higher resolution than in any previously published simulations with a mainstream GCM, though still less than many scales important for clouds. The climate sensitivity and feedbacks, including the cloud feedback, change little. This suggests that vertical resolution did not drive recent increases in GCM climate sensitivity, though this result should be further tested in other GCMs and over a broader range of resolutions. Plain Language Summary: "Climate sensitivity" is how much climate is warmed, in the global and time average, by more CO2 in the air, largely from burning fossil fuels. However, it remains very uncertain. General Circulation Models (GCMs) are our most detailed and physically based models of climate, widely used in many sorts of study of possible climate change. "All models are wrong, but some are useful"—their complexity can make it hard to understand and so assess their behavior. They also have to approximate many physical processes on smaller scales—particularly cloud. More recent GCMs tend to have higher climate sensitivity, many higher than was ever thought likely. Cloud processes seem largely responsible. A possible cause is increased vertical resolution (calculations being done on more levels through the atmosphere) in the newer GCMs. There is a correlation between increased vertical resolution and increased climate sensitivity, but this could be by chance. We have therefore compared one new‐generation GCM with its standard vertical resolution and with 3 times higher (considerably higher than any previously published mainstream GCM work). The climate sensitivity barely changes, and the processes involved, including cloud processes, are clearly working almost identically. But other GCMs might be quite different. Infectious pathogens can disrupt the microbiome in addition to directly affecting the host. Impacts of disease may be dependent on the ability of the microbiome to recover from such disturbance, yet remarkably little is known about microbiome recovery after disease, particularly in nonhuman animals. We assessed the resilience of the amphibian skin microbial community after disturbance by the pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Skin microbial communities of laboratory-reared mountain yellow-legged frogs were tracked through three experimental phases: prior to Bd infection, after Bd infection (disturbance), and after clearing Bd infection (recovery period). Bd infection disturbed microbiome composition and altered the relative abundances of several dominant bacterial taxa. After Bd infection, frogs were treated with an antifungal drug that cleared Bd infection, but this did not lead to recovery of microbiome composition (measured as Unifrac distance) or relative abundances of dominant bacterial groups. These results indicate that Bd infection can lead to an alternate stable state in the microbiome of sensitive amphibians, or that microbiome recovery is extremely slow—in either case resilience is low. Furthermore, antifungal treatment and clearance of Bd infection had the additional effect of reducing microbial community variability, which we hypothesize results from similarity across frogs in the taxa that colonize community vacancies resulting from the removal of Bd. Our results indicate that the skin microbiota of mountain yellow-legged frogs has low resilience following Bd-induced disturbance and is further altered by the process of clearing Bd infection, which may have implications for the conservation of this endangered amphibian. This short methods paper emerges out of the AHRC-funded 'Chronotopic Cartographies' project for the digital mapping of place and space as represented in works of literature. The primary aim of that project was to find a way of mapping and visualizing represented literary worlds for which there is no corresponding real 'ground'. A solution was found in the form of topological graphs which allow for relative rather than absolute mapping (but also permit a relative imaginary map to be lain on top of a pre-existing cartesian form). Using a spatial schema to chunk out the text in terms of chronotopic (time-space) zones enables the generation of a series of visualizations that show different kinds of spatio-temporal constructions in texts. The visualizations are centred upon nodes that consist of chronotopes (e.g. 'the road') as well as locations (e.g. 'road to Geneva'); connections between them of different kinds and toporefs within them (references to other places from this one). The paper will articulate core methods from the project, outlining the stages involved in the process, from marking up the text, using a custom-made schema, through graph generation and into the implications for analysis. This will be illustrated in relation to two Victorian texts: the realist space of Dickens's Oliver Twist ; and the abstract poetic space of Browning's 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came'. Purpose: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). This study was designed to assess if the two-bag (TB) system, which utilizes 2 intravenous (IV) fluid bags, one containing sodium chloride and the other containing sodium chloride and dextrose, is an effective and safe alternative to the traditional one-bag (OB) system in adults with DKA. Methods: A retrospective review was performed at an academic medical center. Adults with DKA were included if treated with the OB or TB system. The primary outcome was time to anion gap closure. Secondary outcomes included duration of insulin infusion, time to serum bicarbonate correction, number of continuous IV fluid orders, intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital length of stay (LOS), and rates of hypoglycemia and hypokalemia. Results: One hundred twenty-two patients were included. Sixty-eight were treated with the OB system and 54 with the TB system. There were no differences in time to anion gap closure, duration of insulin infusion, ICU LOS, or hospital LOS. Time to bicarbonate correction was shorter in the OB group (13.5 [IQR: 7-29] vs 25 [IQR: 11-50] hours; P =.03). There were no differences in rates of hypoglycemia or hypokalemia between groups. Behaviours of concern including aggression are widespread in mental health inpatient settings. Restrictive interventions such as restraint and seclusion can cause additional trauma to already traumatized patients. To decrease use of these interventions in an acute psychiatric unit in Melbourne, Australia, a Psychiatric Behaviours of Concern (Psy‐BOC) response team was introduced. In a Psy‐BOC call, senior medical, nursing, and allied health staff respond to escalating behavioural situations to work with the primary treating team to implement clinical interventions of least restrictive practice. Here, we present qualitative findings reporting staff response to Psy‐BOC. The study complied with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Twenty‐four staff participated in five focus groups. Four themes were identified: Identifying behavioural deterioration, responding to behaviours of concern, staff reactions, and barriers. Although staff were skilled in recognizing and de‐escalating behaviours of concern, patients were secluded when heightened risk was perceived. The adoption of Psy‐BOC was met with some resistance to the cultural change required to adopt this new model. Increased awareness, early identification of behaviours of concern, and pressure from management resulted in reductions in restrictive interventions. Management of patients with drug‐induced psychosis without restraint presented specific difficulties. The ward setting was challenging, offering no break‐out spaces for patients, and few comfortable areas. Some staff appreciated the advice and expertise of the Psy‐Boc team, others felt disempowered and undermined. Improving leadership, staff education, support and collaboration, and including frontline staff in refining the process could enhance the Psy‐BOC response and increase safety for all. As part of the response to COVID-19 in the United Kingdom (UK) the NHS Nightingale Hospital London was rapidly established in March 2020. Set up in the ExCel, an international conference center, it aimed to address the anticipated shortfall of intensive care beds in London. Whilst this hospital garnered huge amounts of publicity in the UK, less widely discussed is the Nightingale Education Center. The education center was instrumental in ensuring that there were staff across all professions ready to work there and had interprofessional education at its core. In a period of under two months it inducted and upskilled over 2,500 people from multiple healthcare and non-healthcare professions. That is more than most hospitals would induct in a whole year. To complete interprofessional training on this scale the education center decamped from the ExCel to The O2, a 20,000 capacity arena, and remained there for six weeks beating the iconic artist Prince for the title of longest running residency. This report offers a reflection on the authors' time spent working in the Education Center as members of the 'Core Operations' team. The content of the article is based upon the authors' reflections, first-hand experiences and field observations. It offers a reflection upon the massive undertaking of setting up an education center in an entertainment venue, as well as the successes and challenges of working interprofessionally in this unique space and under pandemic conditions. Objective: Patients admitted to mental health services may exhibit behaviours of concern (BOCs) such as aggression, self-harm, absconding and sexual harm. BOCs can lead to restrictive interventions, which have adverse effects on patients, carers and staff. This paper aims to explore the nature and outcome of BOCs within an adult inpatient mental health setting.Methods: A retrospective audit was conducted at a metropolitan inpatient service between 1 August 2016 and 31 July 2017. The frequency, nature and outcomes of BOC episodes were described and thematic analysis was used to summarise BOC antecedents.Results: A BOC was documented for 179 (18.2%) patients who also showed high rates of drug abuse, homelessness and longer admission. Most self-harm and sexual harm events occurred outside of normal business hours. Medications and verbal de-escalation were commonly used interventions. Episodes of deliberate self-harm were likely to result in patient and staff injury or mechanical restraint, whereas aggression was associated with seclusion. Mental state, care engagement, physiological stress and situational stressor were identified as BOC antecedents.Conclusion: Multiple forms of BOCs were experienced with mental state, physical and interpersonal contributors identified. Improving multidisciplinary input into early assessment and treatment of BOC causes is needed to improve safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Editor's Note: As an acute condition quickly associated with multiple chronic susceptibilities, COVID-19 has rekindled interest in, and controversy about, the potential role of the host in disease processes. While hundreds of millions of research dollars have been funneled into drug and vaccine solutions that target the external agent, integrative practitioners tuned to enhancing immunity faced a familiar mostly unfunded task. First, go to school on the virus. Then draw from the global array of natural therapies and practices with host-enhancing or anti-viral capabilities to suggest integrative treatment strategies. The near null-set of conventional treatment options propels this investigation. In this paper, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California-San Diego, Chopra Library for Integrative Studies, and Harvard University share one such exploration. Their conclusion, that "certain meditation, yoga asana (postures), and pranayama (breathing) practices may possibly be effective adjunctive means of treating and/or preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection" underscores the importance of this rekindling. Objective: The Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R) Recognition Discrimination (RD) index has emerged as an embedded performance validity test (PVT). However, there do not appear to be any studies that have examined its utility in Spanish-speaking samples. This pilot study examined the classification accuracy of the BVMT-R RD for detecting performance invalidity in a Spanish-speaking forensic sample. Participants and Methods: This cross-sectional study utilized a sample of 89 Spanish speakers that were administered the BVMT-R during an outpatient neuropsychological evaluation. Out of the 89 Spanish speakers, 43 were subjects in litigation, 32 were neurological patients evaluated for clinical purposes, and 14 were healthy controls. The sample was 67% male/33% female, 53% South American, 33% Caribbean (Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban), 10% Central American, 3% North American (Mexican), and 1% Spanish, with a mean age of 44.2 years (SD = 14.2; range = 20-78) and mean education of 11 years (SD = 3.7; range = 0-20). Test administration for each patient was completed in Spanish by a fluent, Spanish-speaking examiner. In total, 64/89 (72%) were classified as valid and 25/89 (28%) as invalid based on performance across the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), at least one additional PVT (Rey-15 item memory test; Rey Dot Counting Test; Reliable Digit Span; WHO-AVLT recognition trial) and objective diagnostic criteria identifying invalid performance. Analyses included three univariate analyses of variance (ANOVA), with the groups (healthy vs neurological vs litigation) as independent variables and performance on BVMT-RD as the dependent variable. Results: Statistically significant differences among the groups were found F(2,86)=8.32, p <.001). Post-hoc analysis (Scheffe test) showed the mean of the litigation group to be significantly lower than the means of the other two groups (healthy and neurological), which showed no difference between them. An ANOVA with validity groups as the fixed factor and BVMT-R RD index as the dependent variable was significant F(1,85)= 21.02, p <.001). Results of a ROC curve analysis yielded statistically significant AUC (.794). The optimal cut-score was BVMT-R RD < 5 (48% sensitivity/88% specificity). Conclusions: Results of the BVMT-R RD index in this Spanish-speaking population differed by subgroup, with worse performance seen in individuals involved in litigation, compared to those who were not (healthy and neurological). Notably, the BVMT-R RD index significantly differentiated validity groups, maintaining adequate sensitivity and good specificity. Objective: This retrospective study compared base rates of failure on a series of standalone and embedded performance validity tests (PVTs) in a sample of Spanish-speaking forensic litigants and explored the impact of demographic factors on PVT performance. Participants and Methods: 62 Spanish-speaking participants involved in litigation (primarily for work-related mTBI) underwent outpatient neuropsychological evaluation. Country of origin spanned South American (56.5%), Caribbean (22.5%), Central American (16.1%), North American (3.2%), and Spanish (1.6%) regions. Of this sample, 56 completed the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), 45 completed the Rey Fifteen Item Test (RFIT), and 49 completed the Dot Counting Test (DCT). Embedded validity measures, Reliable Digit Span (RDS) and the WHO-Auditory Verbal Learning Test (WHO-AVLT) were completed by 32 and 48 participants, respectively. Results: Effects of age (M=42.4, SD=11.72) and region of origin did not significantly impact overall performance on any measure. Mean scores across all standalone PVTs were below cutoffs, which have been previously suggested for use with Spanish-speaking populations (TOMM <40, RFIT total <21, DCT e-score >18). Overall base rates of failure were as follows: 52.5% TOMM (T1 M= 37.5, SD=10.7; T2 M=35.1, SD=10.6), 64.9% RFIT (M=17.8, SD=7.8) 57.6% DCT (M=18.3, SD=8.8), 51.1% RDS (M=6.1, SD=1.6), 29.4% WHO-AVLT (M=10.7, SD=3.9. Years of education (M=9.98, 3.96) was significantly correlated with RFIT total score (r(43) =.48, p<.01) and DCT e-score (r(47) = -.34, p<.05. When stratified by level of education (0-6, 7-11, and 12+), a large discrepancy in base rate of failure was observed on the RFIT, with failures in 92% of participants with less than six years of education, as compared to 52% and 59% failure in those with 7-11 and 12+ years, respectively. Variability in base rates of DCT failure across levels of education, although less extreme than on the RFIT, again demonstrated higher rates of failure in participants with less than six years of education (0-6: 71%, 7-11: 54%, 12+: 52%). Conclusions: These findings add to the existing literature surrounding measurement of suboptimal effort in Spanish-speaking populations. Base rates of PVT failure on both standalone and embedded measures were generally much higher than those reported in prior studies of forensic or compensation-seeking groups, including some with Spanish speaking participants. These high rates of failure are likely attributable, at least in part, to sample characteristics, due to the high proportion of individuals engaged in litigation associated with workplace injuries on construction sites at the study location. Such findings illustrate the importance of a thorough effort assessment for this population. Finally, results demonstrating reduced specificity of the RFIT in Spanish-speaking participants with less than six years of education, suggesting caution is warranted for its use in neuropsychological evaluations with such individuals. Integrated mobility aims to improve multimodal integration to make public transport an attractive alternative to private transport. This paper critically reviews extant literature and current public transport governance frameworks of transport operators across a macro and micro spectrum. Our aim is to extend the concept of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), a proposed coordination mechanism for public transport that is yet to prove its commercial viability and general acceptance. Drawing from avaition experiences, we propose that smart ticketing systems, providing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) can be extended with governance and operational processes that enhance their ability to facilitate Collaboration-as-a-Service (CaaS) to offer a reimagined MaaS 2.0 = CaaS + SaaS. Rather than using the traditional MaaS broker, CaaS incorporates operators more fully and utilises their commercial self-interest to deliver commercially viable and attractive integrated public transport solutions to consumers. This would also facilitate more collaboration of private sector operators into public transport across short and long distance with potentially new opportunities for taxi/rideshare/bikeshare operators and cross geographical transport providers (i.e. transnational multimodal operating companies) to integrate. Leaves display a remarkable range of forms, from flat sheets with simple outlines to cup-shaped traps. Although much progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms of planar leaf development, it is unclear whether similar or distinctive mechanisms underlie shape transformations during development of more complex curved forms. Here, we use 3D imaging and cellular and clonal analysis, combined with computational modelling, to analyse the development of cup-shaped traps of the carnivorous plant Utricularia gibba. We show that the transformation from a near-spherical form at early developmental stages to an oblate spheroid with a straightened ventral midline in the mature form can be accounted for by spatial variations in rates and orientations of growth. Different hypotheses regarding spatiotemporal control predict distinct patterns of cell shape and size, which were tested experimentally by quantifying cellular and clonal anisotropy. We propose that orientations of growth are specified by a proximodistal polarity field, similar to that hypothesised to account for Arabidopsis leaf development, except that in Utricularia, the field propagates through a highly curved tissue sheet. Independent evidence for the polarity field is provided by the orientation of glandular hairs on the inner surface of the trap. Taken together, our results show that morphogenesis of complex 3D leaf shapes can be accounted for by similar mechanisms to those for planar leaves, suggesting that simple modulations of a common growth framework underlie the shaping of a diverse range of morphologies. The Oxford Nanopore MinION DNA sequencing device can produce large amounts of long sequences, typically several kilobases, within a few hours. This long read capacity was exploited to detect antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in a large veterinary teaching hospital environment, and to assess their taxonomic origin, genetic organisation and association with mobilisation markers concurrently. Samples were collected on eight occasions between November 2016 and May 2017 (inclusive) in a longitudinal study. Nanopore sequencing was performed on total DNA extracted from the samples after a minimal enrichment step in broth. Many ARGs present in the veterinary hospital environment could potentially confer resistance to antimicrobials widely used in treating infections of companion animals, including aminoglycosides, extended-spectrum beta-lactams, sulphonamides, macrolides, and tetracyclines. High-risk ARGs, defined here as single or multiple ARGs associated with pathogenic bacterial species or with mobile genetic elements, were shared between the intensive care unit (ICU) patient cages, a dedicated laundry trolley and a floor cleaning mop-bucket. By contrast, a floor surface from an office corridor without animal contact and located outside the veterinary hospital did not contain such high-risk ARGs. Relative abundances of high-risk ARGs and co-localisation of these genes on the same sequence read were higher in the laundry trolley and mop bucket samples, compared to the ICU cages, suggesting that amplification of ARGs is likely to occur in the collection points for hospital waste. These findings have prompted the implementation of targeted intervention measures in the veterinary hospital to mitigate the risks of transferring clinically important ARGs between sites and to improve biosecurity practices in the facility. Abstract This work presents a study on mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) of the polymer of intrinsic microporosity PIM-1, embedding the crystalline Cr-terephthalate metal-organic framework (MOF), known as MIL-101. Different kinds of MIL-101 were used: MIL-101 with an average particle size of ca. 0.2 µm, NanoMIL-101 (ca. 50 nm), ED-MIL-101 (MIL-101 functionalized with ethylene diamine) and NH 2 -MIL-101 (MIL-101 synthesized using 2-aminoterephthalic acid instead of terephthalic acid). Permeability, diffusion and solubility coefficients and their corresponding ideal selectivities were determined for the gases He, H 2 , O 2 , N 2 , CH 4 and CO 2 on the "as-cast" samples and after alcohol treatment. The performance of the MMMs was evaluated in relation to the Maxwell model. The addition of NH 2 -MIL-101 and ED-MIL-101 does not increase the membrane performance for the CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation because of an initial decrease in selectivity at low MOF content, whereas the O 2 and N 2 permeability both increase for NH 2 -MIL-101. In contrast, MIL-101 and NanoMIL-101 cause a strong shift to higher permeability in the Robeson diagrams for all gas pairs, especially for CO 2 , without significant change in selectivity. Unprecedented CO 2 permeabilities up to 35,600 Barrer were achieved, which are among the highest values reached with PIM-1 based mixed matrix membranes. For various gas pairs, the permeability and selectivity were far above the Robeson upper bound after alcohol treatment. Short to medium time aging shows that alcohol treated samples with MIL-101 maintain a systematically higher permeability in time. Mixed gas permeation experiments on an aged as-cast sample with 47 vol% MIL-101 reveal that the MMM sample maintains an excellent combination of permeability and selectivity, far above the Robeson upper bound (CO 2 = 3500–3800 Barrer, CO 2 /N 2 = 25–27; CO 2 /CH 4 = 21–24). This paper gives voice to the victims of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. Using criminological ethnographic research in refugee camps in Bangladesh, we examine the qualitative accounts of violence and persecution and 'break the silence' by giving voice to Rohingya people who had fled military violence. We place the Rohingya's testimonies within a wider theoretical and historical discussion that also addresses the condition of criminology when it comes to understanding and analysing the crime of all crimes—genocide. In recent years, the potential for postcolonial criminology in explaining global inequalities and injustices has been much discussed. However, we critique parts of this debate and instead emphasize the importance of foregrounding the realities of extreme victimization of powerless individuals such as the Rohingya. The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the largest living cat species native to the Americas and one of few large American carnivorans to have survived into the Holocene. However, the extent to which jaguar diversity declined during the end-Pleistocene extinction event remains unclear. For example, Pleistocene jaguar fossils from North America are notably larger than the average extant jaguar, leading to hypotheses that jaguars from this continent represent a now-extinct subspecies (Panthera onca augusta) or species (Panthera augusta). Here, we used a hybridization capture approach to recover an ancient mitochondrial genome from a large, late Pleistocene jaguar from Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Georgia, United States, which we sequenced to 26-fold coverage. We then estimated the evolutionary relationship between the ancient jaguar mitogenome and those from other extinct and living large felids, including multiple jaguars sampled across the species' current range. The ancient mitogenome falls within the diversity of living jaguars. All sampled jaguar mitogenomes share a common mitochondrial ancestor ~400 thousand years ago, indicating that the lineage represented by the ancient specimen dispersed into North America from the south at least once during the late Pleistocene. While genomic data from additional and older specimens will continue to improve understanding of Pleistocene jaguar diversity in the Americas, our results suggest that this specimen falls within the variation of extant jaguars despite the relatively larger size and geographic location and does not represent a distinct taxon. In order to develop a road pricing policy that is effective in reducing vehicle emissions, this paper explores the relationship between road pricing, the urban built environment, and vehicle emissions. Existing studies generally tend to choose a city or an entire region as the research object. For this reason, these kinds of studies can neither analyze the differences in the vehicle emission effects of road charging on regions with different built environment attributes, nor distinguish how different built environment attributes affect the vehicle emission effects of road user charging. To fill in the research gap, this paper focuses on the influences of road charging on the vehicle emissions of regions with different built environment characteristics. In order to achieve the above mentioned goal, this paper first applies a method which combines the land use and transport interaction model with a vehicle emission model to simulate the automobile emissions under different road pricing schemes. Then, using multiple regression analysis, this paper establishes the association between the built environment attributes and the vehicle emissions under different road charging levels. Additionally, using factor analysis and cluster analysis, this research further distinguishes the vehicle emission effects of road pricing based on attributes of the built environment. The results confirmed that road pricing affects vehicle emissions in different regions differently. More importantly, not every region will experience decreases in vehicle emissions after the implementation of a road charging policy. The presence of retail amenities, good street design, and public transportation, the more significant the effect of road pricing in reducing vehicle emissions. This paper analyzes the impacts of the built environment (BE) as it relates to the potential job accessibility (PJA) effects of road pricing. The relationships between the BE elements and PJA under a road charging policy are established using a spatial econometric approach, which uses an integrated land use and transportation model (TRANUS model) and a spatial lag model (SLM). With the intent of further analyzing the differences in the PJA effects of road pricing on traffic analysis zones (TAZs) that contain different combinations of BE elements, a quantitative classification method combining factor and cluster analysis is applied. This will quantitatively categorize TAZs inside and outside the tolled areas. In exploring the relationship between changes in PJA and the road pricing policy, we found the spatial autocorrelation coefficient to be negative. This result suggests that we are unable to increase the PJA of all the regions through road pricing, but rather affect a redistribution of PJA between different regions. Results also indicate that the impacts of road charging on PJA are associated with urban BE elements. Moreover, such effects are the common result of specific characteristics of the BE. The higher the number of jobs, the better the public transportation conditions, and the better the street design (high densities of street and intersections), the less the region will be negatively influenced by a road charging policy, and vice versa. To avoid the negative effects of road pricing on PJA prior to the launch of such a policy, cities should improve public transportation networks and enhance the street design of the road pricing policy areas, especially the toll ring periphery area. Silver nanocube monolayers deposited on polymer films were heated past the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Surface interactions between the cubes and substrate dictate the depth and rate of incorporation into the polymer. Silver nanocubes support hybrid plasmonic modes that are spatially separated when there is anisotropy in the local refractive index. Using this measure, it becomes possible to monitor the position of the cubes relative to the surface and tune spectral features in the visible spectrum. These spatially resolved plasmonic modes were used to probe the local glass transition temperature of polystyrene (PS), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the glass transition temperature of PS, PMMA, PVC were 103 ± 2, 122 ± 12, 81 ± 2 °C, respectively. Many professions strive to extend their gamut of services, yet other professions may attempt to stifle these changes. For example, in Australia, the prospect that pharmacists are permitted to administer vaccinations in some jurisdictions has ignited strident criticism from other professional bodies, including the Australian Medical Association. These criticisms may diminish the confidence of consumers and, therefore, stymie the attempts of professions to extend their services. The aim of this paper is to uncover strategies that professional bodies can implement to prevent unwarranted criticism. This paper first identifies the biases that evoke these criticisms, such as inflated judgements of the status quo. Second, this paper shows that these biases can be ascribed to a specific mindset, in which individuals feel dissociated from future aspirations. Finally, this paper delineates practices that may redress these biases, such as a retreat in which the proposal to extend services is discussed in collaboration with other professional bodies, years before the intended changes. This article is concerned with the relationship between a fictional map and a fictional text and the way in which we understand and interpret that relationship. It explores visual–verbal relations (between map and text) through meaningful elements relating to the juxtaposition of these two forms within the covers of a book. Its primary interest is in determining the nature of the dynamic between map and text, arguing for a more integrated model of interpretation. The first part of the article, therefore, draws upon Gèrard Genette’s account of the paratext in order to consider to what extent the fictional map functions in a paratextual role. The article then explores the spatial and material relationship between map and text by applying Genette’s four key paratextual aspects—location, temporality, communication and function—to an analysis of the fictional map, with particular attention paid to two examples from Arthur Ransome and J. R. R. Tolkien. The article then reflects on the strengths and limits of this approach and incorporates the alternative offered by W. J. T. Mitchell’s formulation of the ‘imagetext’. Senior equines (16 years and over) comprise a significant proportion of the global equine population and there is concern that their management practices may not be entirely appropriate, particularly given recent evidence to suggest an under recognition of disease for which alterations are necessary to ensure optimal care. However, there has been minimal research to investigate the appropriateness of senior equine care and how capable their carers׳ are in providing care. Consequently, this study used a survey approach to investigate the management practices and health care provision for senior equines. A series of Likert type questions were used to assess respondent confidence in aspects of management regimes, recognition of age associated equine conditions, and perceived importance of nutrition advice sources, using a scale of 1–5 (1 being low and 5 high confidences). In addition, a combination of multiple response and open questions was used to report management practices in place. The survey was administered to those enrolled on a massive open online equine nutrition course and received 1342 responses. Results indicated an encouraging provision of care for senior equines, with associated high carer confidence in management regimes and concerted effort to understand and fulfill their senior equines requirements. However, the study highlighted key areas of requirements for owner education. In particular, the combined lack of frequent body condition monitoring and low confidence in disease recognition and supplement feeding. There was also a prevalence of suboptimal strategic worming and dry hay feeding. Given that veterinarians were consistently considered as the most important advice source it is likely that they will have an important role to play in the education that is required. Solid organ transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage organ failure. To prevent rejection of the transplanted organ continuous treatment with immunosuppressive medication is needed. Immunosuppression may be harmful to the transplant recipient, increasing the risk of cancer, infections and cardiovascular disease. To improve transplant and patient survival, there is a need for an immune-modulatory regimen that is not only potent in preventing rejection of the transplanted organ, but has less side effects compared to current immunosuppressive regimens. Increasingly, transplantation research focusses on regulatory T cell (Treg) therapy to achieve this aim, in which Treg are used as a strategy to allow reduction of immunosuppression. Currently, the first clinical trials are underway investigating the safety and feasibility of Treg therapy in renal transplantation. This review gives an overview of the rationale of using Treg therapy in transplantation, previous experience with Treg therapy in humans, and the expected safety, potential efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Treg therapy in solid organ transplantation. Analysis of a high-resolution, convection-permitting simulation of the tropical Indian Ocean has revealed empirical relationships between precipitation and gravity wave vertical momentum flux on grid scales typical of earth system models. Hence, the authors take a rough functional form, whereby the wave flux source spectrum has an amplitude proportional to the square root of total precipitation, to represent gravity wave source strengths in the Met Office global model's spectral nonorographic scheme. Key advantages of the new source are simplicity and responsiveness to changes in convection processes without dependence upon model-specific details of their representation. Thus, the new source scheme is potentially a straightforward adaptation for a class of spectral gravity wave schemes widely used for current state-of-the-art earth system models. Against an invariant source, the new parameterized source generates launch-level flux amplitudes with greater spatial and temporal variability, producing probability density functions for absolute momentum flux over the ocean that have extended tails of large-amplitude, low-occurrence events. Such distributions appear more realistic in comparison with reported balloon observations. Source intermittency at the launch level affects mean fluxes at higher levels in two ways: directly, as a result of upward propagation of the new source variation, and indirectly, through changes in filtering characteristics that arise from intermittency. Initial assessment of the new scheme in the Met Office global model indicates an improved representation of the quasi-biennial oscillation and sensitivity that offers potential for further impact in the future. Pulsed phase thermography (PPT) is a non destructive examination (NDE) technique, traditionally used in the Aerospace Industry for inspection of composite structures, which combines characteristics and benefits of flash thermography and lock-in thermography into a single, rapid inspection technique. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of PPT as a means of inspection for the bond between the beryllium (Be) tiles and the copper alloy (CuCrZr) heatsink of the ITER NHF FW components. This is a critical area dictating the functional integrity of these components, as single tile detachment in service could result in cascade failure. PPT has advantages over existing thermography techniques using heated water which stress the component, and the non-invasive, non-contact nature presents advantages over existing ultrasonic methods. The rapid and non-contact nature of PPT also gives potential for in-service inspections as well as a quality measure for as-manufactured components. The technique has been appraised via experimental trials using ITER first wall mockups with pre-existing disbonds confirmed via ultrasonic tests, partnered with finite element simulations to verify experimental observations. This article examines whether foam rolling the anterior thigh of an athlete can help him or her increase the range of motion when extending hip in a dynamic lunge position. A mixed-effects analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for examining hip extension data. The results show that foam rolling can be use to increase hip extension range of motion prior to physical activity.

While there has been much critical interest in the relationship between visual and verbal forms in the Victorian period, there has been no real attempt to develop ways of exploring and interpreting the relationship between maps and texts. This paper begins to address such a lack by theorizing the dynamic between map and text for the map in adventure fiction. Two iconic maps (those for Treasure Island and King Solomon's Mines) are analyzed in an interdisciplinary way by drawing upon the discipline of cartography, particularly critical cartography. Three cartographic concepts are explored in relation to the literary examples: the accuracy of the map; the concept of cartographic silence, and the authenticity of the map. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
