Ultra violet (UV) solar energy can cause several negative effects to the skin and eyes in case of overexposure. To protect people from erythemal damage, personal erythemal exposure must be carefully assessed when outdoor activities are carried out. The direct measure with scientific instruments is impracticable to common people, and indirect methods assess the exposure only on the horizontal plane: this work developed a mathematical model to assess erythemal exposure to all the body districts. UVA irradiance and erythemal irradiance were measured on several inclined planes, oriented to the four cardinal directions, in seven environments with multiple sky conditions. The UV erythemal (UVE) ratio between erythemal irradiance on an inclined plane (Iery°) and UVA irradiance on a horizontal plane (IUVAh) was calculated. The results indicate that the UVE = Iery°/IUVAh is variable across the day and depends on the plane orientation, its degree of inclination, and sky conditions. Mathematical models to calculate erythemal exposure in clear, intermediate and overcast sky conditions on planes with different inclinations and orientations were derived from the daily trends of the UVE = Iery°/IUVAh. A survey was carried out in Rome to investigate whether street luminance affects pedestrians’ comfort, visibility and perception. Forty people walked five roads and assessed on a questionnaire their walking comfort, visibility of people and background, perception of lighting intensity and uniformity. Results indicated that walking comfort was affected by mean luminance of whole scene, of sidewalk, of lateral wall and of human body; luminance also influenced the perception of street lighting intensity and uniformity and, to a lesser extent, the visibility of other people and of background. Light-emitting diodes (LED) are a promising light source for the cultivation of edible vegetables in greenhouses. The spectral radiation of the light sources has an impact on plants physiological parameters, as well as on morphological features. In this study the growth of spinach plants has been carried out in experimental boxes under two white LED treatments having different correlate color temperature (CCT): the cold lighting (CL) corresponded to 6500 K, while the warm lighting (WL) to 3000 K. The work was aimed to investigate the influence of the two light spectra on plant development and comparing the results. Global and local climate change increases the occurrence and the magnitude of extreme phenomena, as urban heat island and heat waves. These phenomena seriously affect the quality of life in several aspects: society, health, environment; they also heavily affect the building sector, increasing the energy use for cooling and deteriorating the indoor thermal environment. This paper utilizes data from a continuous urban microclimatic monitoring over three years to quantify the impact of heat waves on the thermal quality of two reference residential buildings in the city of Rome, Italy. The synergic effect of heat waves with the urban heat island is also analysed. The observation period includes summers of 2015, 2016 and 2017. The buildings' response is analysed through numerical thermal analyses in transient regime, taking into account several variants: thermal insulation, mechanical cooling system and thermal free-floating conditions, with different night ventilation strategies. Results show that daily average temperature and urban heat island intensity increase by up to 4.3 °C and 1.5 °C respectively during the heat waves with respect to the rest of the summer. The building cooling energy use rises up 87% during heat wave periods, while average operative temperature in free-running buildings increments by up to 3.5 °C. Results also show the impressive combined impact of heat wave and heat island: triplication of cooling energy use in the worst case and increase of the average operative temperature above 5 °C. • The study is part of a large research on visual ergonomics at VDT workstations. • A sample of 57 laptop displays were analyzed. • The luminance emission of displays were assessed through field measurements. • The results showed a great luminance variability between different displays. • A simplified graph was created to allow rapid evaluations of displays performance. The use of display devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops is now massive and continuous in everyday life. It, therefore, becomes increasingly important to be aware of the performance of these devices, not only in terms of the tasks to be performed but also in terms of interaction with humans and therefore knows any possible effect on the ergonomics of vision. Following previous research activities conducted by the authors on the assessment of the visual ergonomics at video display terminal workstations, the aim of this study is to evaluate the ergonomics of human-system interaction of laptop displays. In details, a sample of 57 laptop displays is analyzed in accordance with the requirements of the EN ISO 9241-3xx series of international standards related to the display luminance, luminance ratio, contrast non-uniformity. An extensive luminance measurement campaign was carried out using a special pattern that allowed to measure the luminance in 13 different areas of the displays. The results obtained with this activity showed a great luminance variability between different displays. Almost all the displays are able to emit high levels of display luminance, and almost all the displays meet the requirement of contrast non-uniformity. However, several devices did not meet the recommended values of luminance ratio. Furthermore, the authors created a simplified graph to allow a rapid evaluation of the performance of the displays. The Ultra-Violet Index (UVI) is widespread used to communicate the UV radiation intensity to the general public. The knowledge of the UVI value and of its daily variation is essential for many techniques for monitoring the personal exposure to UV radiation. The UVI values are usually provided by the meteorological services and nowadays it is very common to find UVI forecast tools even in smartphone apps. In this paper, with the aim to evaluate the prediction accuracy of six smartphone apps, a measurement campaign of UVI has been carried out. The measurements have been conducted for the site of Pisa (central Italy), using a portable photoradiometer equipped with a UV erythemal irradiance probe (operating range 250–400 nm). The measured UVI values have been compared with the predicted UVI values (using smartphone apps). Bland-Altman and Passing-Bablok methods have been used to compare the data, the comparison has been conducted on the basis of 90 different UVI measurements, taken at different times, different days and different sky conditions. From the comparison between measured and predicted UVI values it has been possible to observe a general poor accuracy of the apps. The percentage deviations between measured and predicted UVI values were quite high and only one app was able to predict more than 70% of the measured data with an average percentage deviation lower than 30%. • A measurement campaign of UV Index values, carried out for the site of Pisa (Italy), is described. • Measured UV Index values are compared to predicted values, obtained using smartphone apps. • The prediction accuracy of six smartphone apps is assessed. • Significant underestimation of UV Index are obtained in correspondence of the measured UVI peaks. • The results obtained in this study can be useful for promoting a more conscious use of these apps.
