Corticospinal excitability is known to be affected by afferent inflow arising from the proprioceptors during active or passive muscle movements. Also during static stretching (SS) afferent activity is enhanced, but its effect on corticospinal excitability received limited attention and has only been investigated as a single average value spread over the entire stretching period. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) the present study was conducted to explore the time course of corticospinal excitability during 30 seconds SS. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) after TMS were recorded from soleus (SOL) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles in 14 participants during: a passive dynamic ankle dorsiflexion (DF), at six different time points during maximal individual SS (3, 6, 9, 18, 21 and 25 seconds into stretching), during a passive dynamic ankle plantar flexion (PF) and following SS. To explore the time course of corticospinal excitability during the static lengthened phase of a muscle stretch, the stretching protocol was repeated several times so that it was possible to collect a sufficient number of stimulations at each specific time point into SS, as well as during DF and PF. During passive DF, MEPs amplitude was greater than baseline in both TA and SOL (p =.001 and p =.005 respectively). During SS, MEPs amplitude was greater than baseline in TA (p =.006), but not in SOL. No differences between the investigated time points were found and no trend was detected throughout the stretching time. No effect in either muscle was observed during passive PF and after SS. These results could suggest that an increased activity of secondary afferents from SOL muscle spindles exert a corticomotor facilitation on TA. The muscle-nonspecific response observed during passive DF could instead be attributed to an increased activation within the sensorimotor cortical areas as a result of the awareness of the foot passive displacements. Purpose: During a cognitive effort, an increase in cortical electrical activity, functional alterations in the anterior cingulate cortex, and modifications in cortical inputs to the active motor units have been reported. In light of this, an increase in tremor could be anticipated as result of a mental task. In the present work, we tested this hypothesis. Methods: In 25 individuals, tremor was measured with a three-axial accelerometer during 300 s of postural and goal-directed tasks performed simultaneously to mental calculation, or during control (same tasks without mental calculation). Hand and finger dexterity were also evaluated. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings from the extensor digitorum communis were collected during the postural task. Results: Hand and finger dexterity was negatively affected by the mental task (p =.003 and p =.00005 respectively). During mental calculation, muscle tremor increased in the hand postural (+ 29%, p =.00005) but not in the goal-directed task (− 1.5%, p >.05). The amplitude of the main frequency peak also increased exclusively in the hand postural task (p =.028), whilst no shift in the position of the main frequency peak was observed. EMG was not affected. Conclusion: These results support the position of the contribution of a central component in the origin of physiological hand postural tremor. It is suggested that the different effect of mental calculation on hand postural and goal-directed tasks can be attributed to the different origins and characteristics of hand postural and goal-directed physiological tremor. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess force and power exertion during a countermovement jump after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using either semitendinosus and gracilis or bone-patellar tendon-bone graft. Design: One hundred-nineteen semitendinosus and gracilis and 146 bone-patellar tendon-bone participants performed a countermovement jump on two force platforms after 3 (T1) and 6–9 mos (T2) from surgery. Twenty-four healthy participants served as control group. Peak force of eccentric and concentric phases and peak power were obtained from the analysis of vertical components of the ground reaction forces. Asymmetry was quantified by means of limb symmetry index. Results: Eccentric peak force was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than concentric peak force in both bone-patellar tendon-bone and semitendinosus and gracilis at T1 and T2. At T1, bone-patellar tendon-bone showed higher peak power, but lower limb symmetry index in eccentric and concentric compared with semitendinosus and gracilis. At T2, bone-patellar tendon-bone showed higher peak power than semitendinosus and gracilis, although there were no differences in limb symmetry index between the two groups, which however was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in both groups when compared with control group. Conclusions: Bone-patellar tendon-bone and semitendinosus and gracilis participants showed asymmetries in eccentric and concentric force during a countermovement jump. The effects of mental fatigue have been studied in relation to specific percentages of maximal aerobic or anaerobic efforts, maximal voluntary contractions or the performance of sport specific skills. However, its effects on tremor, dexterity and force steadiness have been only marginally explored. The present work aimed at filling this gap. In twenty-nine young individuals, measurement of postural, kinetic and isometric tremor, pinch force steadiness and finger and hand dexterity were performed before and after either 100 min of mental fatigue or control tasks. During the interventions blood pressure, oxygen saturation and heart rate and perceived effort in continuing the task were recorded every 10 minutes. Tremor was analysed in both time (standard deviation) and frequency domain (position, amplitude and area of the dominant peak) of the acceleration signal. Finger dexterity was assessed by Purdue pegboard test and hand dexterity in terms of contact time in a buzz wire exercise. Force steadiness was quantified as coefficient of variation of the force signal. Postural, kinetic and isometric tremors, force steadiness and dexterity were not affected. Higher oxygen saturation values and higher variability of heart rate and blood pressure were found in the intervention group during the mental fatigue protocol (p <.001). The results provide no evidence that mental fatigue affects the neuromuscular parameters that influence postural, kinetic or isometric tremor, force steadiness and dexterity when measured in single-task conditions. Increased variability in heart rate may suggest that the volunteers in the intervention group altered their alert/stress state. Therefore, it is possible that the alterations that are commonly observed during mental fatigue, and that could have affected tremor, steadiness and dexterity only last for the duration of the cognitive task and are not detectable anymore soon after the mental task is terminated. Facial expressions play a key role in interpersonal communication when it comes to negotiating our emotions and intentions, as well as interpreting those of others. Research has shown that we can connect to other people better when we exhibit signs of empathy and facial mimicry. However, the relationship between empathy and facial mimicry is still debated. Among the factors contributing to the difference in results across existing studies is the use of different instruments for measuring both empathy and facial mimicry, as well as often ignoring the differences across various demographic groups. This study first looks at the differences in the empathetic abilities of people across different demographic groups based on gender, ethnicity and age. The empathetic ability is measured based on the Empathy Quotient, capturing a balanced representation of both emotional and cognitive empathy. Using statistical and machine learning methods, this study then investigates the correlation between the empathetic ability and facial mimicry of subjects in response to images portraying different emotions displayed on a computer screen. Unlike the existing studies measuring facial mimicry using electromyography, this study employs a technology detecting facial expressions based on video capture and deep learning. This choice was made in the context of increased online communication during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study confirm the previously reported difference in the empathetic ability between females and males. However, no significant difference in empathetic ability was found across different age and ethnic groups. Furthermore, no strong correlation was found between empathy and facial reactions to faces portraying different emotions shown on a computer screen. Overall, the results of this study can be used to inform the design of online communication technologies and tools for training empathy team leaders, educators, social and healthcare providers. Quantum memory effects can be qualitatively understood as a consequence of an environment-to-system backflow of information. Here, we analyze and compare how this concept is interpreted and implemented in different approaches to quantum non-Markovianity. We study a nonoperational approach, defined by the distinguishability between two system states characterized by different initial conditions, and an operational approach, which is defined by the correlation between different outcomes associated to successive measurement processes performed over the system of interest. The differences, limitations, and vantages of each approach are characterized in detail by considering diverse system–environment models and dynamics. As a specific example, we study a non-Markovian depolarizing map induced by the interaction of the system of interest with an environment characterized by incoherent and coherent self-dynamics. Background: It is well known that different exercise intensities for the ankle muscles can impair postural stability. However, it remains unclear whether it is low-intensity exercises (which primarily induce central fatigue) or high-intensity exercises (which primarily induce peripheral fatigue) that have a greater effect on voluntary postural control.Research Question: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of fatiguing exercises that induce either central or peripheral fatigue on voluntary postural stability.Methods: Following isometric maximum voluntary contraction (IMVC) tests, 12 volunteers randomly performed submaximal (40% IMVC) and maximal (100% IMVC) fatiguing contractions of the plantar flexors on a dynamometer. Before and after the fatiguing protocols, postural stability was assessed by measuring the centre of pressure trajectory during voluntary sways on a force plate. The electromyography activity of the right gastrocnemius medialis was recorded. To assess central and peripheral fatigue, electrical stimulations were applied both during and after the IMVC. The effects of the fatiguing protocols and the differences between the protocols were tested with a two-way repeated measures ANOVA test (fatigue × time).Results: Submaximal contractions induced a greater increase of sway area and medial-lateral sway cycle range than maximal contractions (P < 0.01). Voluntary activation decreased significantly more after submaximal contractions than maximal contractions (P < 0.01). Submaximal contractions induced a significantly greater reduction of IMVC than maximal contractions (P < 0.01). Resting twitch size was smaller after maximal contractions than submaximal contractions (P = 0.04).Significance: The outcome of this study suggests that training programmes for patients with balance issues should be based on training with maximal rather than submaximal load, to avoid deficits that might compromise postural stability. We address the problem of establishing which is the proper form of quantum master equation generating a survival probability identical to that corresponding to the nonergodic sequence of “light on” and “light off” fluorescence fluctuations in blinking quantum dots. We adopt a theoretical perspective based on the assumption that the abrupt transitions from the light on to light off state are the results of many collisions between system and environment, properly described by the Lindblad equation, and that between two consecutive collisions the system dynamics are frozen. This generates a quantum master equation belonging to the recently proposed class of generalized Lindblad equations, with a time convoluted structure, involving in the specific case of this paper both the unitary and the nonunitary contribution of the Lindblad equation. This is the property that under the low-frequency condition makes the new class of generalized Lindblad equation generates the required survival probability. We make the conjecture that this equation corresponds to the cooperative dynamics of many units that, in isolation, are described by the ordinary Lindblad equation. When the time scale of the unitary term of the Lindblad equation is shorter than the dephasing time, the cooperation generates a surprisingly extended macroscopic coherence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By considering single chromophore systems whose radiative decay can be written in terms of a nonlocal Lindblad-type evolution, the authors extend the formalism of generalized optical Bloch equations [Y. Zheng and F. L. H. Brown, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 238305 (2003)] to non-Markovian dynamics. They demonstrate that photon statistical properties such as bunching and antibunching, as well as sub- and super-Poissonian photon statistics can be fitted in the context of non-Markovian dynamics. The nonlocal effects may arise due to the interaction with a complex structured environment. In this case, the photon statistics can be related with the parameters that define the microscopic system-environment interaction. Alternatively, the authors demonstrate that effective dynamics such as triplet blinking, where the system is coupled via incoherent transitions to an extra dark state, can also be worked out in terms of generalized non-Markovian optical Bloch equations. The present work aimed at investigating the effects of local vibration on upper limb postural and kinetic tremor, on manual dexterity and on spinal reflex excitability. Previous studies have demonstrated a decrease in spinal reflex excitability and in force fluctuations in the lower limb but an increase in force fluctuation in the upper limbs. As hand steadiness is of vital importance in many daily-based tasks, and local vibration may also be applied in movement disorders, we decided to further explore this phenomenon. Ten healthy volunteers (26±3years) were tested for H reflex, postural and kinetic tremor and manual dexterity through a Purdue test. EMG was recorded from flexor carpi radialis (FCR) and extensor digitorum communis (EDC). Measurements were repeated at baseline, after a control period during which no vibration was delivered and after vibration. Intervention consisted in holding for two minutes a vibrating handle (frequency 75Hz, displacement∼7mm), control consisted in holding for two minutes the same handle powered off. Reflex excitability decreased after vibration whilst postural tremor and manual dexterity were not affected. Peak kinetic tremor frequency increased from baseline to control measurements (P=0.002). Co-activation EDC/FCR increased from control to vibration (P=0.021). These results show that two minutes local vibration lead to a decrease in spinal excitability, did not compromise manual dexterity and did not increase tremor; however, in contrast with expectations, tremor did not decrease. It is suggested that vibration activated several mechanisms with opposite effects, which resulted in a neutral outcome on postural and kinetic tremor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Static stretching induces acute structural changes of the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) that are related to the intensity or duration of stretching. It has been reported that stretching with a constant torque (CT) leads to greater joint range of motion changes than stretching with a constant angle (CA). Whether or not this difference is due to different structural changes of the MTUs of the lower leg and ankle plantar flexors is not known. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the acute effects of single CA and CT stretching on various muscle and tendon mechanical properties.Method: Seventeen young, healthy volunteers were tested on two separate days using either CT or CA stretching (4 × 30 s each). Before and after stretching, dorsiflexion range of motion (RoM), passive resistive torque (PRT), and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) were measured with a dynamometer. Ultrasonography of the medial gastrocnemius (GM) muscle-tendon junction (MTJ) displacement allowed us to determine the length changes in the tendon and muscle, respectively, and hence to calculate their stiffness.Results: Maximum dorsiflexion increased while PRT, muscle-tendon stiffness, and muscle stiffness decreased following both CA and CT stretching. There was a greater increase in RoM following CT stretching compared to CA stretching. Moreover, the decline in PRT was greater during CT stretching compared to CA stretching. As expected, several functional adaptations (RoM, PRT) were different between CT and CA stretching due to the higher intensity of CT stretching. However, no structural differences in the adaptations to the stretching modalities could be detected.Conclusion: We suggest that the different functional adaptations between CA and CT stretching are the consequence of different adaptations in the perception of stretch and pain. New Findings What is the central question of this study? What mediates neural responses following static stretching, and how long do these influences last? What is the main finding and its importance? This study shows that 1 min of static stretching inhibits the tendon tap reflex and facilitates the H reflex without influencing motor-evoked potentials. The results indicate that at least two different mechanisms mediate neural responses after static stretching. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the neural responses observed after static stretching are mediated by sensitivity of muscle spindles, spinal excitability or cortical excitability and how long these influences last. Nineteen volunteers (25.7 ± 5.6 years old) were tested for the tendon tap reflex (T-reflex), H reflex and motor-evoked potentials on ankle flexors and extensors immediately, 5 and 10 min after 1 min static stretching applied at individual maximal ankle dorsiflexion, as well as immediately, 5 and 10 min after a control period of the same duration. Comparison of measurements collected immediately after stretching or control conditions revealed that the T-reflex was weaker after stretching than after control (−59.2% P = 0.000). The T-reflex showed a slow recovery rate within the first 150 s after stretching, but 5 min after the inhibition had disappeared. The H reflex increased immediately after stretching (+18.3%, P = 0.036), showed a quick tendency to recover and returned to control values within 5 min from stretching. Motor-evoked potentials were not affected by the procedure. These results suggest that 1 min of static stretching primarily decreases muscle spindle sensitivity and facilitates the H reflex, whereas effects on the motor cortex can be excluded. In this work we show how dynamic speckle information can be extracted directly from digital holograms. This allows improving the analysis and characterization of dynamic phenomena by combining dynamic speckle with digital holographic interferometry measurements. We have studied the drying process of paint coatings, which is a typical study case in the field of dynamic speckle characterization, since the speckle activity (SA) of drying coatings is known to decay smoothly as a function of time. We recorded both holograms and speckle images during the process. In this way, we could compare the evolution of global SA calculated from speckle images by a standard method with the evolution of speckle correlation extracted directly from the holograms. Synthesis and preparation of ZnO films are relevant subjects for obtaining transparent and conducting layers with interesting applications in optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Optimization of parameters such as dopant type and concentration, deposition time and substrate temperature is important for obtaining ZnO layers with optimal properties. In this work we present a study about the induced effects of deposition time on optical and electrical properties of ZnO thin films. These films were deposited by spray pyrolysis of a suitable Zn precursor, obtained through the sol–gel method. The deposition time has direct incidence on internal stress in the crystal structure, generating defects that may affect transparency and electrical transport into the layers. We performed mosaicity measurements, through X-ray diffraction, and used it as a tool to get an insight on structural characteristics and homogeneity of ZnO layers. The family of (q-Gaussian and q-exponential probability densities fit the statistical behavior of diverse complex self-similar nonequilibrium systems. These distributions, independently of the underlying dynamics, can rigorously be obtained by maximizing Tsallis "nonextensive" entropy under appropriate constraints, as well as from superstatistical models. In this paper we provide an alternative and complementary scheme for deriving these objects. We show that (q-Gaussian and (q-exponential random variables can always be expressed as a function of two statistically independent gamma random variables with the same scale parameter. Their shape index determines the complexity q parameter. This result also allows us to define an extended family of asymmetric (q-Gaussian and modified (q-exponential densities, which reduce to the standard ones when the shape parameters are the same. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a simple change of variables always allows relating any of these distributions with a beta stochastic variable. The extended distributions are applied in the statistical description of different complex dynamics such as log-return signals in financial markets and motion of point defects in a fluid flow. In this work, we have investigated the influence of thickness on structural and electrical properties of Al-doped ZnO films. Transparent conducting oxide films were grown by the spray pyrolysis technique from precursors prepared via the sol–gel method. We determined the structural properties of the films by performing X-ray diffraction and mosaicity measurements, which evidenced an increase of disorder and inhomogeneity between crystalline domains as the films thickened. This behavior was contrasted with results obtained from electrical measurements and was attributed to plastic deformation of the films as their thickness increased. As a result, the carrier mobility, the optical gap and the activation energy are affected due to emerging grain boundaries and a higher degree of disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work aimed at investigating the effects of mechanically amplified tremor on cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) in the alpha band. The study of CMC in this specific band is of particular interest because this coherence is usually absent in healthy individuals and it is an aberrant feature in patients affected by pathological tremors; understanding its mechanisms is therefore important. Thirteen healthy volunteers (23±4 years) performed elbow flexor sustained contractions both against a spring load and in isometric conditions at 20% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC). Spring stiffness was selected to induce instability in the stretch reflex servo loop. 64 EEG channels, surface EMG from the biceps brachii muscle and force were simultaneously recorded. Contractions against the spring resulted in greater fluctuations of the force signal and EMG amplitude compared to isometric conditions (p<.05). During isometric contractions CMC was systematically found in the beta band and sporadically observed in the alpha band. However, during the contractions against the spring load, CMC in the alpha band was observed in 12 out of 13 volunteers. Partial directed coherence (PDC) revealed an increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction in the alpha band (p<.05). Therefore, coherence in the alpha band between the sensory-motor cortex and the biceps brachii muscle can be systematically induced in healthy individuals by mechanically amplifying tremor. The increased information flow in the EMG to EEG direction may reflect enhanced afferent activity from the muscle spindles. These results may contribute to the understanding of the presence of alpha band CMC in tremor related pathologies by suggesting that the origin of this phenomenon may not only be at cortical level but may also be affected by spinal circuit loops. Abstract: In this study, the effects of mental fatigue on mechanically induced tremor at both a low (3–6Hz) and high (8–12Hz) frequency were investigated. The two distinct tremor frequencies were evoked using two springs of different stiffness, during 20s sustained contractions of the knee extensor muscles at 30% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) before and after 100min of a mental fatigue task, in 12 healthy (29±3.7years) participants. Mental fatigue resulted in a 6.9% decrease in MVC and in a 9.4% decrease in the amplitude of the agonist muscle EMG during sustained 30% MVC contractions in the induced high frequency only. Following the mental fatigue task, the coefficient of variation and standard deviation of the force signal decreased at 8–12Hz induced tremor by 31.7% and 35.2% respectively, but not at 3–6Hz induced tremor. Similarly, the maximum value and area underneath the peak in the power spectrum of the force signal decreased by 55.5% and 53.1% respectively in the 8–12Hz range only. In conclusion, mental fatigue decreased mechanically induced 8–12Hz tremor and had no effect on induced 3–6Hz tremor. In this work, we implemented an off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM) setup to study the behavior of liquid drops on nanostructured porous silicon (PS) membranes. When a liquid comes into contact with the PS structure, capillary action and surface tension give rise to imbibition of the liquid into the intricate volume of the pores. At the same time, the vapor field developed around the drop enhances liquid condensation and evaporation into and from the pores. The complex interplay between these phenomena (capillary driven internal flows, condensation, and evaporation) is not yet fully understood but the methods we propose can provide new insights. We demonstrate how DHM allows determining the filling fraction of the porous membrane around drying drops of water and isobutyl alcohol. The phase information obtained from registered holograms provides quantitative information that permits to reconstruct the filling fraction along the porous membrane and its evolution during the drying process. Additionally, relevant parameters such as speed and contact angle during retraction of the drops can be measured. These methods can be further extended to other porous materials, such as porous alumina, micro- and macro-PS, to develop better fluid-dynamic models for describing fluid behavior in highly confined structures. In this paper we demonstrate that two commonly used phenomenological post-Markovian quantum master equations can be derived without using any perturbative approximation. A system coupled to an environment characterized by self-classical configurational fluctuations, the latter obeying a Markovian dynamics, defines the underlying physical model. Both Shabani-Lidar equation [A. Shabani and D. A. Lidar, Phys. Rev. A 71, 020101 (R) (2005)] and its associated approximated integrodifferential kernel master equation are obtained by tracing out two different bipartite Markovian Lindblad dynamics where the environment fluctuations are taken into account by an ancilla system. Furthermore, conditions under which the non-Markovian system dynamics can be unraveled in terms of an ensemble of measurement trajectories are found. In addition, a non-Markovian quantum jump approach is formulated. Contrary to recent analysis [L. Mazzola, E. M. Laine, H. P. Breuer, S. Maniscalco, and J. Piilo, Phys. Rev. A 81, 062120 (2010)], we also demonstrate that these master equations, even with exponential memory functions, may lead to non-Markovian effects such as an environment-to-system backflow of information if the Hamiltonian system does not commutate with the dissipative dynamics. Abstract: In this work, we present two simple methods to quantify the mobility of dynamic speckle patterns. The first method is based on the averaged pixel intensity differences between subsequent frames, while the second simply counts the fraction of pixels whose intensity changes with time in more than a certain quantity related to background noise. Abstract: The properties of some complex many body systems can be modeled by introducing in the dissipative dynamics of each single component a set of kinetic constraints that depend on the state of the neighbor systems. Here, we characterize this kind of dynamics for two quantum systems whose independent dissipative evolutions are defined by a Lindblad equation. The constraints are introduced through a set of projectors that restrict the action of each single dissipative Lindblad channel to the state of the other system. Conditions that guarantee a classical interpretation of the kinetic constraints are found. The generation and evolution of entanglement is studied for two optical qubits systems. Classically constrained dissipation leads to a stationary state whose degree of entanglement depends on the initial state. Nevertheless, independently of the initial conditions, a maximal entangled state is generated when both systems are subjected to the action of local Hamiltonian fields that do not commutate with the constraints. Abstract: In this work we present structural and electrical properties of SnO2:F thin films deposited on glass substrate by the spray pyrolysis technique. The precursors of SnO2:F were synthesized by a sol–gel method, starting from a SnCl4·5H2O/ethanol mixture and using NH4F/H2O as a dopant. Different properties were observed depending on the deposition time of the films. The structural characteristics of the layers, like crystal size, preferential growth orientation and mosaicity, were studied by X-ray diffraction. These results were compared and correlated with those obtained from electrical measurements, such as carrier density, Hall mobility and resistivity. Strong violations of existing fluctuation theorems may arise in nonequilibrium steady states characterized by distributions with power-law tails. The ratio of the probabilities of positive and negative fluctuations of equal magnitude behaves in an anomalous nonmonotonic way [H. Touchette and E. G. D. Cohen, Phys: Rev. E 76, 020101(R) (2007)]. Here, we propose an alternative definition of fluctuation relation (FR) symmetry that, in the power-law regime, is characterized by a monotonic linear behavior. The proposal is consistent with a large deviationlike principle. As an example, we study the fluctuations of the work done on a dragged particle immersed in a complex environment able to induce power-law tails. When the environment is characterized by spatiotemporal temperature fluctuations, distributions arising in nonextensive statistical mechanics define the work statistics. In that situation, we find that the FR symmetry is solely defined by the average bath temperature. The case of a dragged particle subjected to a Lévy noise is also analyzed in detail. Abstract: The overview of TDP 43 functions immediately disclose a number of open questions regarding its pathological role. The formation of TDP-43 aggregates is one of the major distinguishing features of TDP-43 proteinopathies, especially in patients affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Lobar degeneration (FTLD). At the moment, however, very little is known regarding the biological processes that underlie TDP-43 aggregation and, most importantly, its potential consequences on cellular metabolism. For these reasons, it is particularly important to further investigate this process in order to gain a better understanding of the pathology and to develop novel therapeutic effectors. In this report, we focus on a series of missense mutations associated with disease in the 342–366 region of this protein to examine their ability to affect RNA splicing regulation and to induce aggregate formation. In particular, aggregate formation was assessed in a novel system capable of inducing TDP-43 aggregation in experimental cell lines and primary neuronal cultures. The results of this analysis showed that the presence of two of these missense mutations in the 342–366 region (G348V and N352S) could differentially affect the levels and appearance of TDP-43 aggregation with respect to the wild-type protein. TDP-43 is one of the major components of the neuronal and glial inclusions observed in several neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar degeneration. These characteristic aggregates are a "landmark" of the disease, but their role in the pathogenesis is still obscure. In previous works, we have shown that the C-terminal Gln/Asnrich region (residues 321-366) of TDP-43 is involved in the interaction of this protein with other members of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein protein family. Furthermore, we have shown that the interaction through this region is important for TDP-43 splicing inhibition of cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator exon 9, and there were indications that it was involved in the aggregation process. Our experiments show that in cell lines and primary rat neuronal cultures, the introduction of tandem repeats carrying the 331-369-residue Gln/Asn region from TDP-43 can trigger the formation of phosphorylated and ubiquitinated aggregates that recapitulate many but not all the characteristics observed in patients. These results establish a much needed cell-based TDP-43 aggregation model useful to investigate the mechanisms involved in the formation of inclusions and the gain- and loss-of-function consequences of TDP-43 aggregation within cells. Nonequilibrium stationary fluctuations may exhibit a special symmetry called fluctuation relations (FRs). Here, we show that this property is always satisfied by the subtraction of two random and independent variables related by a thermodynamiclike change of measure. Taking one of them as a modulated Poisson process, it is demonstrated that intermittence and FRs are compatible properties that may coexist naturally. Strong non-Gaussian features characterize the probability distribution and its generating function. Their associated large deviation functions develop a "kink" at the origin and a plateau regime respectively. Application of this model in different stationary nonequilibrium situations is discussed. The large-deviation method allows to characterize an ergodic counting process in terms of a thermodynamic frame where a free energy function determines the asymptotic nonstationary statistical properties of its fluctuations. Here we study this formalism through a statistical mechanics approach, that is, with an auxiliary counting process that maximizes an entropy function associated with the thermodynamic potential. We show that the realizations of this auxiliary process can be obtained after applying a conditional measurement scheme to the original ones, providing is this way an alternative measurement interpretation of the thermodynamic approach. General results are obtained for renewal counting processes, that is, those where the time intervals between consecutive events are independent and defined by a unique waiting time distribution. The underlying statistical mechanics is controlled by the same waiting time distribution, rescaled by an exponential decay measured by the free energy function. A scale invariance, shift closure, and intermittence phenomena are obtained and interpreted in this context. Similar conclusions apply for nonrenewal processes when the memory between successive events is induced by a stochastic waiting time distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon samples were deposited on glass substrates at different temperatures by high frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. In this way, samples with different hydrogen concentrations and structures were obtained. The transition from an amorphous to a crystalline material, induced by a four-step thermal annealing sequence, has been followed. Effusion of hydrogen from the films plays an important role in the nucleation and growth mechanisms of crystalline silicon grains. Measurements of hydrogen concentrations, Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction and UV reflectance showed that an enhanced crystallization was obtained on samples deposited at lower substrate temperatures. A correlation between these measurements allows to analyze the evolution of structural properties of the samples. The presence of voids in the material, related to disorder in the amorphous matrix, results in a better quality of the resulting nanocrystalline silicon thin films. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nickel-silicide-induced crystallization of hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films has been investigated. Intrinsic and doped films were deposited on glass substrates by HF-PECVD, and Ni was dc sputtered on top. Nucleation and growth of grains were followed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV reflectance and X-ray diffraction. Homogeneous, large and oriented grains, with diameters over 25μm, were obtained in intrinsic and lightly boron-doped films. Phosphorous-doped films presented a random needle-like growing mechanism, instead of the disk shape shown by the other samples. Abstract: In this paper we extract and highlight some essential ingredients and properties that characterize the phenomenon of anticipated synchronization when external additive noise sources perturb the master and slave dynamics. Our results rely on a minimal scalar setup able to exhibit the more fundamental aspects of this phenomenon, where the fluctuations around the average dynamics are worked out in a small noise and adiabatic approximations allowing to describe their dynamics through linear delay Langevin equations. In this context, we find necessary conditions that guarantee anticipated synchronization in the mean value. Fluctuations around this condition are studied through the stationary correlation of the delayed difference between the master and slave dynamics. It is shown that external noise properties can be inferred by measuring this object. Conditions for minimizing the dynamical fluctuations around the anticipated synchronization in mean value are found. Non-Markovian Lindblad rate equations arise from alternative microscopic interactions such as quantum systems coupled to composite reservoirs, where extra degrees of freedom mediate the interaction between the system and a Markovian reservoir, as well as from systems coupled to complex structured reservoirs whose action can be well approximated by a direct sum of Markovian sub-reservoirs (Budini in Phys. Rev. A 74:053815 []). The purpose of this paper is two fold. First, for both kinds of interactions we find general expressions for the system operator correlations written in terms of the Lindblad rate propagator. Secondly, we find the conditions under which a quantum regression hypothesis is valid. We show that a non-Markovian quantum regression theorem can only be granted in a stationary regime, being a necessary condition the fulfillment of a detailed balance condition. This result is independent of the underlying microscopic interaction, providing a criterion for the validity of the regression hypothesis in non-Markovian Lindblad-like master equations. Brain plasticity is the capacity of cerebral neurons to change, structurally and functionally, in response to experiences. This is an essential property underlying the maturation of sensory functions, learning and memory processes, and brain repair in response to the occurrence of diseases and trauma. In this field, the visual system emerges as a paradigmatic research model, both for basic research studies and for translational investigations. The auditory system remains capable of reorganizing itself in response to different auditory stimulations or sensory organ modification. Acoustic biofeedback training can be an effective way to train patients with the central scotoma, who have poor fixation stability and poor visual acuity, in order to bring fixation on an eccentrical and healthy area of the retina: a pseudofovea. We study a linear Langevin dynamics driven by an additive non-Markovian symmetrical dichotomic noise. It is shown that when the statistics of the time intervals between noise transitions is characterized by two well differentiated timescales, the stationary distribution may develop multimodality (bi- and trimodality). The underlying effects that lead to a probability concentration in different points include intermittence and also a dynamical locking of realizations. Our results are supported by numerical simulations as well as by an exact treatment obtained from a Markovian embedding of the full dynamics, which leads to a third-order differential equation for the stationary distribution. We report the results of enhanced nickel induced crystallization of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin films under vacuum conditions. Crystallization was performed by conventional furnace annealing at both atmospheric pressure and vacuum or low pressure conditions (≈10-6 Torr) for comparison. We have investigated the influence of low pressure during annealing on the resulting polycrystalline films by means of optical microscopy, ultraviolet reflectance, and photoacoustic spectrometry measurements. A faster crystallization and a smaller grain size were observed when the process is carried out under vacuum, with an annealing time reduction of more than 50%. We discuss, from a thermodynamical viewpoint, some possible causes by which vacuum annealing influences incubation and nucleation stages due to the presence of mobile hydrogen atoms inside the amorphous silicon matrix. Objective: Obesity represents a significant global health challenge characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation and metabolic dysregulation. The hypothalamus, a key regulator of energy homeostasis, is particularly susceptible to obesity's deleterious effects. This study investigated the role of the immunoproteasome, a specialized proteasomal complex implicated in inflammation and cellular homeostasis, during metabolic diseases. Methods: The levels of the immunoproteasome β5i subunit were analyzed by immunostaining, western blotting, and proteasome activity assay in mice fed with either a high-fat diet (HFD) or a regular diet (CHOW). We also characterized the impact of autophagy inhibition on the levels of the immunoproteasome β5i subunit and the activation of the AKT pathway. Finally, through confocal microscopy, we analyzed the contribution of β5i subunit inhibition on mitochondrial function by flow cytometry and mitophagy assay. Results: Using an HFD-fed obese mouse model, we found increased immunoproteasome levels in hypothalamic POMC neurons. Furthermore, we observed that palmitic acid (PA), a major component of saturated fats found in HFD, increased the levels of the β5i subunit of the immunoproteasome in hypothalamic neuronal cells. Notably, the increase in immunoproteasome expression was associated with decreased autophagy, a critical cellular process in maintaining homeostasis and suppressing inflammation. Functionally, PA disrupted the insulin-glucose axis, leading to reduced AKT phosphorylation and increased intracellular glucose levels in response to insulin due to the upregulation of the immunoproteasome. Mechanistically, we identified that the protein PTEN, a key regulator of insulin signaling, was reduced in an immunoproteasome-dependent manner. To further investigate the potential therapeutic implications of these findings, we used ONX-0914, a specific immunoproteasome inhibitor. We demonstrated that this inhibitor prevents PA-induced insulin-glucose axis imbalance. Given the interplay between mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic disturbances, we explored the impact of ONX-0914 on mitochondrial function. Notably, ONX-0914 preserved mitochondrial membrane potential and attenuated mitochondrial ROS production in the presence of PA. Moreover, we found that ONX-0914 reduced mitophagy in the presence of PA. Conclusions: Our findings strongly support the pathogenic involvement of the immunoproteasome in hypothalamic neurons in the context of HFD-induced obesity and metabolic disturbances. Targeting the immunoproteasome highlights a promising therapeutic strategy to mitigate the detrimental effects of obesity on the insulin-glucose axis and cellular homeostasis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a single floss band treatment of the thigh on hip and knee range of motion (ROM), knee extensor passive resistive torque (PRT), knee extensor maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) torque, and countermovement jump (CMJ) height. Sixteen healthy male volunteers were tested before and after both the flossing treatment and the control condition, in random order. For the flossing treatment, the floss band was wound around both thighs for 120 s, and the subject was then asked to perform 20 squats. During the control treatment, only the 20 squats were performed. Before and after the treatments, knee and hip ROM were assessed using a Thomas test with 3D motion caption. The PRT and MVC of the knee extensors were measured with a dynamometer, and the electromyographic (EMG) signal was collected from the vastus lateralis. CMJs were performed on a force plate. Compared to the control condition, the flossing treatment showed a positive effect on the MVC of the knee extensors (P = 0.01); however, no effects on hip ROM (P = 0.58), knee ROM (P = 0.37), CMJ height (P = 0.75), or PRT (P = 0.22) were observed. Correlation analyses revealed that the increase in MVC was not significantly related to changes in the tension of the muscle-tendon unit (rP = −0.13; P = 0.64) or vastus lateralis EMG (rS = 0.44; P = 0.10). Since the increase in MVC cannot be explained by changes of the mechanical (PRT) or neuromuscular (EMG) properties, we speculate that an enhancement of growth hormone and norepinephrine levels following the compression release is instead responsible for the increase in MVC. For classical Markovian stochastic systems, past and future events become statistically independent when conditioned to a given state at the present time. Memory non-Markovian effects break this condition, inducing a nonvanishing conditional past-future correlation. Here, this classical memory indicator is extended to a quantum regime, which provides an operational definition of quantum non-Markovianity based on a minimal set of three time-ordered quantum system measurements and postselection. The detection of memory effects through the measurement scheme is univocally related to departures from Born-Markov and white noise approximations in quantum and classical environments, respectively. Powders composed of ZnO sub-microspheres were obtained in two stages: solvothermal synthesis and thermal annealing at 125, 300, 450 or 600ºC in atmospheric conditions. The synthesis was carried out with methanol as solvent, zinc acetate dihydrate as Zn2+ source and ammonia chloride as complexing agent. The as-grown and annealed samples were studied through photoluminescence, microRaman and reflectance spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). After the solvothermal synthesis stage, a white precipitate was obtained composed of a flower-like multiphase assembly of layers identified mainly as a layered basic zinc salts (LBZS) and Zn(NH3)2Cl2. After the annealing treatments, the LBZS and Zn(NH3)2Cl2 transformed into ZnO, while the powder morphology changed from the layered flower-like to polycrystalline ZnO spherical particles with sub-micrometer diameters. With increasing annealing temperature, the ZnO spheres size remained unchanged, while the mean crystallite size and wurtzite lattice parameters decreased as a result of tensile stress relaxation. Concomitantly, a blueshift of the defect-related ZnO emission was observed. The combined analysis of emission, vibrational and reflectance spectra and XRD suggests that the annealing treatments result in the formation of ZnO crystallites with oxygen vacancies and oxygen vacancy-zinc interstitial complexes whose densities increase as the annealing temperature increases. The results and analysis reported in this work contribute to the understanding of growth mechanisms relevant for the tailoring of ZnO powder properties through solvothermal synthesis in non-aqueous media. The first-passage-time (FPT) problem is studied for superstatistical models assuming that the mesoscopic system dynamics is described by a Fokker-Planck equation. We show that all moments of the random intensive parameter associated to the superstatistical approach can be put in one-to-one correspondence with the moments of the FPT. For systems subjected to an additional uncorrelated external force, the same statistical information is obtained from the dependence of the FPT moments on the external force. These results provide an alternative technique for checking the validity of superstatistical models. As an example, we characterize the mean FPT for a forced Brownian particle. The ensemble properties and time-averaged observables of a memory-induced diffusive-superdiffusive transition are studied. The model consists in a random walker whose transitions in a given direction depend on a weighted linear combination of the number of both right and left previous transitions. The diffusion process is nonstationary, and its probability develops the phenomenon of aging. Depending on the characteristic memory parameters, the ensemble behavior may be normal, superdiffusive, or ballistic. In contrast, the time-averaged mean squared displacement is equal to that of a normal undriven random walk, which renders the process nonergodic. In addition, and similarly to Lévy walks [Godec and Metzler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 020603 (2013)], for trajectories of finite duration the time-averaged displacement apparently become random with properties that depend on the measurement time and also on the memory properties. These features are related to the nonstationary power-law decay of the transition probabilities to their stationary values. Time-averaged response to a bias is also calculated. An intermittent two-state noise can be modelled through a renewal process characterized by two different time scales. A (four state) Markovian embedding of this non-Markovian process is presented. The equivalence between the renewal approach and the enlarged master equation is shown. Analytical results for n-time moments of the intermittent dichotomic noise are obtained. We introduce a class of discrete random-walk model driven by global memory effects. At any time, the right-left transitions depend on the whole previous history of the walker, being defined by an urnlike memory mechanism. The characteristic function is calculated in an exact way, which allows us to demonstrate that the ensemble of realizations is ballistic. Asymptotically, each realization is equivalent to that of a biased Markovian diffusion process with transition rates that strongly differs from one trajectory to another. Using this "inhomogeneous diffusion" feature, the ergodic properties of the dynamics are analytically studied through the time-averaged moments. Even in the long-time regime, they remain random objects. While their average over realizations recovers the corresponding ensemble averages, departure between time and ensemble averages is explicitly shown through their probability densities. For the density of the second time-averaged moment, an ergodic limit and the limit of infinite lag times do not commutate. All these effects are induced by the memory effects.
