Polyketide synthases (PKSs) are crucial multidomain enzymes in diverse natural product biosynthesis. Parrots use a type I PKS to produce a unique pigment called psittacofulvin in their feathers. In domesticated budgerigars and lovebirds, the same amino acid substitution (R644W) within malonyl/acetyltransferase (MAT) domain of this enzyme has been shown to cause the blue phenotype with no psittacofulvin pigmentation, proposing a strong evolutionary constraint on the mechanism. Here, we identified seven previously unreported variants in PKS associated with defective psittacofulvin production in four diverse species, including three nonsense mutations. Intriguingly, three of the remaining nonsynonymous substitutions reside within the ketoacyl synthase (KS) domain, whereas one at MAT domain. The heterologous expression of these PKS variants in yeast confirmed complete or partial loss of psittacofulvin production. These findings establish PKS as a functionally conserved key-enzyme determining psittacofulvin-based hues among diverse parrots, highlighting multiple conserved domains essential for the PKS function. The avifaunal diversity assessment is a valuable ecological tool, providing a significant measure for assessing the quality and quantity of various habitats. Karsog is located in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India, in the Pir Panjal Himalayan range. Avifaunal study was conducted on a monthly basis in the Tehsil Karsog from December 2023 to June 2024. The study revealed the presence of 91 bird species, spanning over 63 genera, 38 families, 12 orders. The Order Passeriformes was the most diverse with 64 species, while Bucerotiformes and Strigiformes were represented by one species each. The Muscicapidae, with 12 species, was the dominant family in the study area. Analysis of data on relative abundance showed that of the 91 species recorded, 23 species (25.27%) were very common, 27 species (29.67%) were common, 26 species (28.57%) were uncommon, and 15 species (16.48%) were rare. Among the documented avifauna, 2 species, the Alexandrine Parakeet and the Himalayan Griffon are Near Threatened species as categorized by the IUCN Red List (2024). Assessment of data on feeding guild shows that, out of 91 species, 2 species (2.19%) are granivores, 3 species (3.29%) are carnivores, 11 species (12.08%) are omnivores, 17 species (18.68%) are insectivores and 58 species (63.73%) have varied type of feeding habits. It shows that 22 species (24.17%) have a narrow feeding guild meaning that they rely on limited type of food resources. Further analysis of data on the population status reveals that 17 species (18.68%) have declining population trend as per the IUCN global population trend assessment. Obtaining precise estimates of population size and trends through time is important for the effective management and conservation of threatened species. For parrots (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae), obtaining such estimates can be challenging, particularly for cryptic species that occur in low densities in complex and/or fragmented habitats. We used a statistical resampling approach with the aim to compare the reliability and precision of counts for the critically endangered Tasman parakeet (Cyanoramphus cookii) that were taken using two methods on Norfolk Island (Pacific Ocean), namely, fixed-point counts and line transect counts. The detections obtained during fixed-point counts had better estimated precision (0.274) than line transect counts (0.476). The fixed-point method was also more efficient, yielding 1.338 parakeet detections per count compared to the 0.642 parakeet detections per count obtained by the line transect method. Although Tasman parakeets can be detected by either of these methods, our research demonstrates that the fixed-point method is more precise and reliable. Trichomonas gallinae is a widespread protozoan parasite that primarily affects birds, causing a disease known as avian trichomonosis. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of T. gallinae, a parasite causing avian trichomoniasis in feral pigeons, budgerigars, and finches in Tehran, Iran. The 5.8S ribosomal RNA locus, along with the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region, has been extensively utilized for genotype identification and for determining inter- and intra-specific diversity. More recently, the Fe-hydrogenase (Fe-Hyd) gene has been suggested as an additional genetic marker to enhance the accuracy of strain subtyping discrimination. In the present study, a total of 12% (12/100) birds examined were infected with T. gallinae using microscopy and PCR methods. Infection was found in seven of 30 (23.3%) feral pigeons, three of 40 (7.5%) budgerigars, and two of 30 (6.66%) finches. Analysis of the ITS2 region of T. gallinae isolates revealed two highly similar sequences. The first sequence (GenBank: OQ689964-OQ689970) was found in five feral pigeons and two budgerigars, whereas the second sequence (GenBank: OQ689971-OQ689975) was identified in two feral pigeons, one budgerigar, and two finches. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of two distinct clusters (cluster I and cluster II) within the trichomonads based on the ITS2 region. However, further analysis using Fe-Hyd revealed greater diversity, with three subtypes identified (A1, A2, and C1). One isolate identified in the present study (GenBank accession number: OQ694508.1) belonged to subtype A1. Combining ITS2 and Fe-Hyd markers holds promise for a more comprehensive understanding of the population structure of T. gallinae and the potential role of ITS2 in host adaptation. This paper presents Nesting Ferality, a performative installation that examines how feral rose-ringed parakeets are represented online and governed in Dutch cities. Expanding existing research at the interconnection of artistic practice and cultural geography, the installation incorporates and performs quantitative and qualitative data in an exhibition space. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) can be used to evaluate hearing sensitivity of animals. However, typical measurement protocols are time-consuming. Here, an adaptive algorithm is proposed for efficient ABR threshold estimation. The algorithm relies on the update of the predicted hearing threshold from a Gaussian process model as ABR data are collected using iteratively optimized stimuli. To validate the algorithm, ABR threshold estimation is simulated by adaptively subsampling pre-collected ABR datasets. The simulated experiment is performed on 5 datasets of mouse, budgerigar, gerbil, and guinea pig ABRs (27 ears). The datasets contain 68–106 stimuli conditions, and the adaptive algorithm is configured to terminate after 20 stimuli conditions. The algorithm threshold estimate is compared against human rater estimates who visually inspected the full waveform stacks. The algorithm threshold matches the human estimates within 10 dB, averaged over frequency, for 15 of the 27 ears while reducing the number of stimuli conditions by a factor of 3–5 compared to standard practice. The intraclass correlation coefficient is 0.81 with 95% upper and lower bounds at 0.74 and 0.86, indicating moderate to good reliability between human and algorithm threshold estimates. Simple Summary: Artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasingly being recognized as a new and rapidly growing form of environmental pollution that may impose severe health and ecological consequences. In our study, we examined the effects of bright ALAN exposure with increasing duration on growth and reproduction success in Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Strong correlations have been detected between artificial light at night, melatonin sulfate levels, and both body mass and reproductive success. ALAN increased body mass gain and reduced reproduction efficiency in exposed birds compared with controls. Additionally, melatonin levels were also suppressed in an exposure dose-dependent manner, suggesting a role for the hormone suppression in mediating the effects of the environmental exposure on the growth and reproduction responses of Budgerigars. Short-wavelength artificial light at night is increasingly being associated with health and ecological risks. The negative impact of this relatively new source of pollution has been studied intensively in wild birds but to a much lesser extent in captive conspecifics. Using an avian model, our objective was to evaluate the effects of short-wavelength (200 lux at 460 nm) lighting on the body mass and reproductive success of Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) under captive conditions. Birds were maintained under a naturally increasing photoperiod from March to June, with one daily artificial light at night exposure of increasing duration (0, 30, 60, and 90 min) in the middle of the dark period. During the experiments, birds were monitored monthly for body mass, number of eggs laid, hatching success, and melatonin sulfate levels in droppings. Artificial light at night increased body mass and decreased melatonin sulfate levels as well as the number of eggs and hatching success in a duration dose-dependent manner. Our findings provide further evidence of the potential adverse impact of artificial light at night on captive birds and advocate the need for effective controlling measures for light pollution. ABSTRACT: Deviations from the normal in the intrauterine formative phase have a permanent effect in an individual's life. They can cause limitations in lifestyle from nil to severe. The sites may differ and hence would the presentations. Some of them together may form a syndrome while others could present as solitary findings. Background: Most vocal learning species exhibit an early critical period during which their vocal control neural circuitry facilitates the acquisition of new vocalizations. Some taxa, most notably humans and parrots, retain some degree of neurobehavioral plasticity throughout adulthood, but both the extent of this plasticity and the neurogenetic mechanisms underlying it remain unclear. Differential expression of the transcription factor FoxP2 in both songbird and parrot vocal control nuclei has been identified previously as a key pattern facilitating vocal learning. We hypothesize that the resilience of vocal learning to cognitive decline in open-ended learners will be reflected in an absence of age-related changes in neural FoxP2 expression. We tested this hypothesis in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), a small gregarious parrot in which adults converge on shared call types in response to shifts in group membership. We formed novel flocks of 4 previously unfamiliar males belonging to the same age class, either "young adult" (6 mo − 1 year) or "older adult" (≥ 3 year), and then collected audio-recordings over a 20-day learning period to assess vocal learning ability. Following behavioral recording, immunohistochemistry was performed on collected neural tissue to measure FoxP2 protein expression in a parrot vocal learning center, the magnocellular nucleus of the medial striatum (MMSt), and its adjacent striatum. Results: Although older adults show lower vocal diversity (i.e. repertoire size) and higher absolute levels of FoxP2 in the MMSt than young adults, we find similarly persistent downregulation of FoxP2 and equivalent vocal plasticity and vocal convergence in the two age cohorts. No relationship between individual variation in vocal learning measures and FoxP2 expression was detected. Conclusions: We find neural evidence to support persistent vocal learning in the budgerigar, suggesting resilience to aging in the open-ended learning program of this species. The lack of a significant relationship between FoxP2 expression and individual variability in vocal learning performance suggests that other neurogenetic mechanisms could also regulate this complex behavior. Simple Summary: The global trade of pet birds has grown significantly, leading to more non-native birds being introduced into the wild. Our study examined the potential habitats and environmental factors that might allow pet birds lost and sighted in South Africa to survive outside captivity. Using geographic location data of pet birds, we predicted which areas might be suitable for various species such as the African grey parrot, Budgerigar, Cockatiel, Green-cheeked conure, Monk parakeet, and Rose-ringed parakeet. We found that a significant portion of South Africa could support these species, with some areas being highly suitable. The study highlighted how pet birds could escape or be released into the wild due to human activities, and that urban areas are particularly at risk. This research emphasizes the need for careful monitoring to prevent these birds from becoming invasive, which could impact local ecosystems and biodiversity. The global trade of non-native pet birds has increased in recent decades, and this has accelerated the introduction of invasive birds in the wild. This study employed ensemble species distribution modelling (eSDM) to assess potential habitat suitability and environmental predictor variables influencing the potential distribution of non-native pet bird species reported lost and sighted in South Africa. We used data and information on lost and found pet birds from previous studies to establish and describe scenarios of how pet birds may transition from captivity to the wild. Our study revealed that models fitted and performed well in predicting the suitability for African grey (Psittacus erithacus), Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), Green-cheeked conure (Pyrrhura molinae), Monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), and Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), with the mean weighted AUC and TSS values greater than 0.765. The predicted habitat suitability differed among species, with the suitability threshold indicating that between 61% and 87% of areas were predicted as suitable. Species with greater suitability included the African grey, Cockatiel, and Rose-ringed parakeet, which demonstrated significant overlap between their habitat suitability and reported lost cases. Human footprint, bioclimatic variables, and vegetation indices largely influenced predictive habitat suitability. The pathway scenario showed the key mechanisms driving the transition of pet birds from captivity to the wild, including the role of pet owners, animal rescues, adoption practices, and environmental suitability. Our study found that urban landscapes, which are heavily populated, are at high risk of potential invasion by pet birds. Amateur breeding of parrots as pets has contributed to many species being found in areas where they never occurred in the wild, particularly in warmer regions, but also in the temperate climates of North America and Europe. Climate change is likely to exacerbate this process. We hypothesised that parrots occurred in the wild in the cities of Poland, especially the rose-ringed parakeet, as there are reports of breeding sites in the literature. Using information on lost, found and sighted parrots posted on social media, we have analysed the extent of parrot emergence in Poland. In a period of less than two years (from October 2018, through 2019 and from June to the end of December 2021), 2,675 parrot specimens of 49 species were found in the wild. The most frequently observed species were cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus (N = 962), budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus (N = 884) and rose-ringed parakeet Psittacula krameri (N = 182). Parrots were most frequently observed in urban areas, in regions characterized by a higher population size, a higher income and a higher proportion of people with a university degree. Parrots (Order: Psittaciformes) are a diverse clade that is easily distinguishable from other birds. Despite the clear characters that define Psittaciformes (hooked bills, zygodactylous feet, and plumage that is often predominantly green or red), relative morphological uniformity among parrots has made taxonomic classification a fraught endeavor for over a century. Parrot systematics were propelled forward when DNA sequencing data shed insights into higher- and species-level relationships. However, despite these significant advances, major gaps in taxon sampling and uncertainty in relationships remained due to inferring phylogenetic relationships with short fragments of DNA. Recent work using genome-wide molecular markers with nearly complete parrot species-level sampling has brought clarity to many of the remaining outstanding questions on taxonomic relationships. Here, we build on this work by including four additional species to present a taxonomic revision of Psittaciformes better aligned with its evolutionary tree. We infer maximum likelihood and time-calibrated phylogenies for parrots, present accounts for 106 genera, compare how our findings relate to previous work, and highlight future areas of research. The family-group nomenclature we propose reflects deep evolutionary divergences with diagnosable synapomorphies that are commensurate across comparable ranks in psittaciform clades. We erect three new family-group names at the rank of tribe (Brotogerini Smith, Thom, and Joseph, 2024; Neophemini Schodde, Mason, Smith, Thom, and Joseph, 2024; Bolbopsittacini Smith, Thom, and Joseph, 2024). We elevate one tribe to subfamily rank for the cacatuid genus Probosciger and we restrict usage of the recently introduced tribe Touitini to its type genus Touit. At shallower taxonomic scales, recognition of more rather than fewer genera addresses issues of paraphyly or high discordance in morphological and genomic characters at those levels. We support many reinstatements of older generic names advocated in recent decades, and we further reinstate five valid, available generic names not widely used in recent literature if at all (Licmetis, Gymnopsittacus, Clarkona, Suavipsitta, Cardeos). We advocate the retention of Vini Lesson, 1833, over Coriphilus Wagler, 1832, based on preliminary examination showing substantially more frequent usage of the former. We redraw generic limits in some other cases (e.g., Bolborhynchus parrotlets and allies) and this includes recognizing fewer genera than recently proposed for the Psittacula sensu lato ringneck parakeets. Our revised classification of parrots addresses many longstanding taxonomic questions including those that have arisen through the acquisition of genetic data. It provides context for the temporal origins of psittaciform clades and the taxonomic and phenotypic diversification throughout their evolutionary history. The present paper discusses the frugivorous bird and mammalian pest species on cultivated fig, Ficus carica L. in Punjab, India. This study was conducted for 10 years from 2014 to 2024. A total of 11 frugivorous pests including 9 bird species namely; Indian Grey Hornbill Ocyceros birostris (Scopoli), Asian Koel Eudynamys scolopacea (Linnaeus), House Crow Corvus splendens (Vieillot), Jungle Babbler Turdoides striata (Dumont), Red-vented Bulbul Pycnonotus cafer (Linnaeus), Common Myna Acridotheres tristis (Linnaeus), Brown-headed Barbet Megalaima zeylanica (Gmelin), Coppersmith Barbet Megalaima haemacephalus (Statius Muller), Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri (Scopoli) falling under 5 orders and 8 families and two mammals (Indian flying fox, Pteropus giganteus (Brunnich) and Northern palm squirrel, Funambulus pennantii (Wroughton) were recorded to act as pests of fruits of F. carica at the three locations of the Punjab state, India. Passeriformes was found to be the dominating amongst all with birds of four families damaging the fruits. Amongst all, Rose-ringed parakeet and Northern palm squirrel were observed causing significant damage to the fruits throughout the fruiting season. Rose-ringed parakeet was observed causing damage at all the three locations surveyed. All the recorded species are of least concern status as per IUCN. Illegal or poorly regulated wildlife trade may enhance parasite spread worldwide, leading to pathogen outbreaks and the emergence of diseases affecting native wildlife, domestic animals and humans. The order Psittaciformes has the largest proportion of endangered species among all birds worldwide and is one of the most trafficked taxa in the pet trade. However, despite the large number of parrot species commercialized worldwide, the influence of illegally traded wild birds on the introduction of exotic pathogens is still poorly investigated. Here we molecularly examined the prevalence and genetic diversity of haemosporidian parasites in illegally traded white‐winged parakeets (Brotogeris versicolurus), one of the most trafficked parrots in South America. We found that 18.5% of parakeets harboured Plasmodium relictum GRW04, a highly invasive malaria parasite provoking population decline and even extinctions in native avifauna when established outside its natural range. We also showed that malaria infected birds have lower body condition than uninfected parakeets, revealing the negative effects of malaria on their avian hosts. These outcomes highlight the risk of malaria spill over and disease outbreak in illegally traded wildlife. Our results also reveal epidemiological key concepts in disease transmission, such as the role of poorly studied parrot species as natural reservoir hosts of haemosporidians. The Kangean islands are a biologically poorly known archipelago situated in the Java Sea, Indonesia, 120 km directly north of Bali and 124 km off East Java. These islands host an avifauna comprising at least 13 endemic subspecies, two of which have by some sources recently been considered species. We combine historical published literature with our own surveys of the archipelago in 2007-2008, 2010 and 2023 to produce an updated list of the islands' birds (n=140 species) and their distribution across the islands. We evaluate in more detail the conservation status of all endemic taxa, as well as several others we consider to be of concern. Despite its current listing as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the endemic Kangean Tit-babbler Mixornis prillwitzi is common in highly degraded habitats, including scrub, and is probably one of the islands' least threatened birds. However, because of trapping, the archipelago's endemic taxon of Red-breasted Parakeet Psittacula alexandri kangeanensis, and its populations of Green Junglefowl Gallus varius and Common Hill Myna Gracula religiosa are likely at risk of extirpation. The endemic taxon of White-rumped Shama Copsychus malabaricus nigricauda, sometimes afforded species rank as 'Kangean Shama', may already be (at least functionally) extinct in the main archipelago, with no record since 2007-2008. We recommend longer and more detailed surveys of the islands' birds, and that an effective protected area is established on the main Kangean island, which hosts the largest area of remaining forest in the archipelago and most of its endemic taxa. Vascular hamartomas, though rare, can manifest in avian species, presenting diagnostic intricacies for clinicians. A 12-year-old male rose-ringed parakeet presented with a mass between the upper and lower mandibular angles on the right side. The mass was surgically removed. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a cutaneous vascular hamartoma. The bird recovered uneventfully and 6 months later showed no evidence of recurrence. The objectives of this study were to identify the species of psittaciform birds kept in captivity as companion and ornamental animals in Yucatán, Mexico, as well as to estimate the prevalence and intensity of the intestinal parasites. 16 species of psittaciform belonging to 11 different genera were studied, of which three species are locally distributed (Amazona albifrons, Amazona xantholora and Eupsittula nana astec), two are introduced (Amazona autumnalis and Amazona oratrix) and 11 are exotic (Agapornis sp., Amazona auropalliata, Amazona farinosa, Aratinga solstitialis, Barnardius zonaris, Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae, Melopsittacus undulatus, Noephema bouerkii, Nymphicus hollandicus, Psephotus sp. and Psittacula krameri) for the state of Yucatán, Mexico. A total of 84 stool samples were obtained and processed using the centrifugal flotation and McMaster techniques. A prevalence of 14.28 % of birds with intestinal parasites was estimated, reporting the presence of the nematodes Ascaridia spp. (33.3 %), Capillaria spp. (16.6 %) and Heterakis spp. (16.6 %), cestodes Hymenolepis spp. (16.6 %) and Raillietina spp. (8.3 %) and the protozoan Eimeria spp. (16.6 %). The intensity of eggs and oocysts per gram of feces (h/gh and ooq/gh) was from <50 to 600, with high intensities only observed in exotic species such as B. zonaris and C. novaezelandiae. It is concluded that six genera of intestinal parasites were present in psittaciforms from Yucatán, Mexico with nematodes being the ones that appeared most frequently. Investigations of the parasites associated with extinct avian species provide unique insights into the ecology and evolution of both hosts and their parasitic counterparts. In the present paper, a new quill mite species, Peristerophila conuropsis sp. n., belonging to the family Syringophilidae (Prostigmata: Cheyletoidea) is described from the Carolina parakeet Conuropsis carolinensis Linnaeus (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae). This new species was collected from museum dry skin of the Carolina parakeet, the only native representative of the Psittacidae in the United States, which was an abundant resident of the southeastern and midwestern states and has been extinct in the beginning of the 20th century. Comment on the current taxonomic state and host associations of the genus Peristerophila are provided. Based on the host associations and habitats occupied by Peristerophila and related genera on parrots, it is hypothesized with the high probability that P. conuropsis has been extinct along with its host. Avian gastric yeast (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) is an anamorphic ascomycetous yeast which colonises the junction between proventriculus and ventriculus in many species of birds. Although a normal flora, sometimes it causes a subclinical infection and at times lead to gastric infections. The present study confirmed the presence of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster from faecal samples of budgerigar with symptoms like regurgitation and chronic wasting. Gram's staining of the direct smear demonstrates large number of pleomorphic Gram positive organisms. The organism could be cultured on blood agar, Sabouraud's dextrose agar and De Man Rogosa and Sharpe agar but not on MacConkey agar. The organisms were found to be negative for catalase and oxidase and did not reduce nitrate. It produced acid from maltose, sucrose, glucose, galactose and trehalose and not from raffinose and lactose. Wildlife management can generate social conflict when stakeholder perceptions of the target species are not considered. Introduced Ring-necked Parakeets (RNP) are established in the UK and have been added to the 'general licence' of birds that can be killed to prevent serious economic damage. We aimed to better understand perceptions of RNPs on a nationwide scale to inform mitigation actions for potential future conflict over RNP management. We surveyed 3,947 UK residents to understand awareness of, knowledge of and attitudes towards the RNP across the UK. We found that most respondents (90.2%) were aware of the RNP. Almost half of respondents (45.9%) held negative opinions, particularly against the RNP in rural areas (64.7%), suggesting landscape contexts influence attitudes. Respondent preference for the RNP was low in local neighbourhoods (7.80%) although the species was considered aesthetically pleasing by most (83.0%). Many respondents knew the species' name (54.9%), but underestimated current population numbers in the UK (82.6%) and few knew its full native range (10.0%). We identified respondents' ecological interest, age, education, preference for, awareness of and knowledge of the RNP as significant factors associated with perceptions. Our findings suggest that the RNP presents a complex socio-environmental challenge, with respondent awareness, knowledge and attitudes each forming an important component of perceptions towards this species. We recommend that wildlife managers utilise our findings and cohesive approach to enhance future RNP perception research in the UK and abroad and towards the success of any proposed management initiatives under the UK general licence. The Golden Parakeet is an endemic Brazilian flagship species that has suffered from poaching and habitat loss, leading to local extinctions in the urbanized parts of the Amazon. We reintroduced six groups of mostly captive-bred parakeets in a protected area. The birds were acclimatized for at least five months at the release site, where they were trained to recognize native foods and develop foraging skills. Subsequently, we conducted a soft release, followed by daily supplementation and monitoring. For three years following the release we recorded their diet, feeding behavior, and how they adapted to wild foraging. The reintroduced birds fed on 23 plant species, with 13 not being previously listed in past studies. The three most consumed species corresponded to 77% of their feeding records. Parakeets spent more time feeding in altered landscapes and secondary vegetation than in the preserved forest. Most of the feeding happened during the rainy season when most of their favorite plants are fruiting. The parakeets' incorporation of new species in their diet and their transition from supplemental to natural feeding happened gradually, as we did not reduce food offerings. Parakeets that showed site fidelity were able to find native food rapidly following release, but individuals that dispersed immediately had more difficulty finding food. Simple Summary: The escape of pets plays a significant role in the establishment of invasive species. In Japan, where most pet birds in households are foreign-origin species, one study examined the number of these birds that escaped into the wild. Information on pet bird escapes was gathered from online lost-and-found websites for pets between 2018 and 2021. Escape incidents occur daily, with Budgerigars and Cockatiels being the most common escapees. Despite being popular pets worldwide, these birds rarely establish themselves outside their natural habitats. Monk Parakeets, which briefly bred in the wild in Japan in the 1980s but failed to establish themselves, and the Rose-ringed Parakeet, already established as an invasive species in the Kanto region, have also occasionally been reported as escapees. Considering their global invasive presence, it is crucial to be vigilant in preventing pet birds from escaping to protect local ecosystems. Regular escape from commonly maintained species highlights the need for responsible pet ownership and heightened awareness to curb potential environmental impacts. The escape of pet birds into the wild raises concerns about the introduction of invasive avian species. This study investigated the impact of escaped pet birds on the introduction of non-native species in Japan. Data sourced from four lost-and-found pet websites between January 2018 and December 2021 revealed 12,125 recorded escapes exhibiting both daily occurrences and seasonal fluctuations. Statistical modeling identified the monthly average temperature (positively correlated) and maximum electricity demand (negatively correlated) as influential factors. Text analysis revealed "window" and "open" as frequently cited reasons for escapes. Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and Cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) accounted for 76% of the total escape, suggesting a low perceived risk of establishment in nonnative environments. Interestingly, two globally established invasive species, the Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) and Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), were among the escaped birds. While the Rose-ringed Parakeet is locally naturalized in Tokyo and its adjacent prefectures, the Monk Parakeet failed to establish itself in Japan. Aim: Anticipating the ultimate fraction of a landscape that might be susceptible to invasion is challenging as several species are able to expand the range of environmental conditions used over invasion. Despite its relevance, the more proximate processes underlying observed shifts are not sufficiently understood. Habitat selection theory predicts that as population density increases, individuals start using sub‐optimal resources to compensate for the limitation of the preferred ones. However, niche shifts might also occur as result of changes in habitat preferences over time. Here, we tested these alternative hypotheses by investigating nesting resource use and selection over a biological invasion and the relative effect of density‐dependence on such patterns. Location: Barcelona, Spain. Methods: We take advantage of a large dataset recording the occurrence of the invasive monk Parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus in Barcelona in the period 1975–2015. We apply generalized linear models to analyse changes in nesting habitat preferences and its interactive effect with conspecific presence. Results: Temporal changes in nesting habitat use occurred. Palm species were the most commonly used nesting substrate since the beginning of the invasion but the diversity and frequency of use of other nesting substrates increased over time. Changes in nesting substrate use were consistent with a change in habitat selection, when accounting for habitat availability. Although a general role of conspecific aggregation on occupation patterns was found, it was mostly additive. That is, shifts in nesting substrate did not structure in relation to conspecific distribution. Conclusions: Shifts in nesting resource selection can occur during the spread stage of biological invasions, probably related to innovation and learning, rather than to optimal habitat selection. These shifts present a significant challenge for forecasting efforts and management. Geographic differences in vocalizations provide strong evidence for animal culture, with patterns likely arising from generations of social learning and transmission. Most studies on the evolution of avian vocal variation have predominantly focused on fixed repertoire, territorial song in passerine birds. The study of vocal communication in open-ended learners and in contexts where vocalizations serve other functions is therefore necessary for a more comprehensive understanding of vocal dialect evolution. Parrots are open-ended vocal production learners that use vocalizations for social contact and coordination. Geographic variation in parrot vocalizations typically take the form of either distinct regional variations known as dialects or graded variation based on geographic distance known as clinal variation. In this study, we recorded monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) across multiple spatial scales (i.e. parks and cities) in their European invasive range. We then compared calls using a multilevel Bayesian model and sensitivity analysis, with this novel approach allowing us to explicitly compare vocalizations at multiple spatial scales. We found support for founder effects and/or cultural drift at the city level, consistent with passive cultural processes leading to large-scale dialect differences. We did not find a strong signal for dialect or clinal differences between parks within cities, suggesting that birds did not actively converge on a group level signal, as expected under the group membership hypothesis. Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the pelvimetric values obtained from radiographic pelvis images of budgerigars in terms of sexual dimorphism. The objectives included determining linear osteometric and angle measurements of the pelvis, as well as calculating the length‐to‐width ratios among different pelvimetric measurements. Additionally, the study aimed to reveal the correlations between age and body weight with both the pelvimetric measurements and ratio measurements in these animals. Methods: In this study, measurements of linear distance, angle and length‐to‐width ratios were obtained from ventrodorsal images of the pelvis in a sample of 60 budgerigars, consisting of 30 males and 30 females. Subsequently, the statistical analysis of the obtained measurement values was performed. Results: When analysing the morphometric measurement values based on sex, it was observed that all linear measurements (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, L6, L7, L8, L9, L10 and L11) were higher in males, whereas the angle measurements (A1, LA2 and RA2) were found to be significantly greater in females (p < 0.05). Additionally, both male and female budgerigars exhibited a greater pre‐acetabular length of the ilium compared to the post‐acetabular length. Moreover, there were mostly positive significant correlations between age and body weight with the pelvic measurement values in both sexes (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The obtained biometric measurement values from pelvimetric X‐ray images in budgerigars were analysed to assess sexual dimorphism. Furthermore, this study presents fundamental morphometric data that can be valuable for clinical, taxonomic, phylogenetic, ornithological, allometric and characterization studies of budgerigars. We compared the bird diversity of a managed (Rajdhani Jalashay) and an unmanaged wetland (Mustafapur) in Patna, Bihar, India. We recorded bird species by using point counts and fixed-route monitoring. At Rajdhani Jalashay, a total of 73 species were recorded, of which 15 species were winter visitors. Two species were in the Near-threatened category: Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca) and Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria), while the others were of least concern. At Mustafapur wetland, 67 species were recorded with 11 species as winter visitors. Simpson's species diversity index was 0.78 at Rajdhani Jalashay, and 0.81 at Mustafapur wetland. The number of species of waders was 17 at Mustafapur wetland and 11 at Rajdhani Jalashay. The total number of Lesser Whistling-duck (Dendrocygna javanica), a resident bird was almost double (526) at Mustafapur wetland than that at Rajdhani Jalashay (234). The nitrate level was twice higher and the phosphate level was four times higher at Mustafapur wetland than those at Rajdhani Jalashay. The difference in species number and composition between the two wetlands may be attributed to the eutrophication resulting from high nitrate and phosphate levels at Mustafapur wetland. Unfortunately, the Mustafapur wetland is under threat due to human influences. The protection and sustainable management of natural wetlands is required for saving the biodiversity of the area. Budgerigar fledgling disease (BFD) is a contagious disease caused by avian polyomavirus (APV) in psittacine birds and causes high mortality rates. Here, eight APV-positive cases were confirmed from dead parrots or parrot tissue samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Full-length genome sequencing showed high nucleotide identity (98.84–100%) between the APV strains. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that two genogroups were cocirculating in South Korea. The nucleotide sequences of five strains, collected from different parrot species, were identical; however, pathological lesions were observed in only two parrots, both aged 2 months. Pathology included necrotic spots in the liver, subcutaneous haemorrhage, hepatomegaly, ascites, intranuclear inclusion bodies, hepatocyte karyomegaly, hepatic necrosis, and bile duct proliferation. This suggests that the pathogenicity of APV might be host age-dependent regardless of the host species. This study improves our understanding of APV pathogenicity and provides a more detailed genetic characterization of APV strains. The Rose-ringed Parakeet Alexandrinus krameri (Scopoli, 1769) firstly reported from Diyarbakır province, South-eastern Anatolia, Türkiye. The species have been identified in three different locations in Diyarbakır and totally, nine individuals have been determined between January 2021 and June 2022 periods. The records and observations of species were evaluated for the occurrence of species together with available data. Although no breeding has been detected so far, there are suitable habitats in Diyarbakır that will enable the species to breeding and establishing a new population. The species may be seen more widely in the near future due to the fact that the species is settled in the neighbouring provinces to the Diyarbakır. Rose-ringed Parakeet records were evaluated for Diyarbakır province where is species newly reported. This may allow us to estimate changes in population size and range expansion of species in this part of Türkiye in the future. Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is a potentially fatal disease of psittacine birds. Avian bornavirus (ABV), the causative agent of PDD, causes inflammation of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. Clinically, birds affected by PDD present with gastrointestinal tract dysfunction, neurological symptoms, or both. In this study, we evaluated the presence of proventriculus dilation and ABV in 40 birds (cockatiel, n = 12; budgerigar, n = 28), submitted to the veterinary clinic, by radiology and RT-PCR. Lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs and feather samples were taken from 36 live birds including the cockatiel and budgerigar, as well as samples of proventriculus from four autopsied birds. After reviewing the radiographs, 55.5% of the evaluated birds had proventriculus dilatation, and according to RT-PCR results, 47.5% of samples were positive. In most cases, radiology and RT-PCR results matched together very well, but in some cases, differences were observed. These discrepancies between the results of these two assays require further studies. Based on the results of this study, the prevalence of ABV was high in the region, and the importance of hygiene and testing of new birds should be emphasized. Introduction: The present study demonstrates that in the same brain area the astroglia can express GFAP (the main cytoskeletal protein of astroglia) in some species but not in the others of the same vertebrate class. It contrasts the former opinions that the distribution of GFAP found in a species is characteristic of the entire class. The present study investigated birds in different phylogenetic positions: duck (Cairina moschata domestica), chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), and quails (Coturnix japonica and Excalfactoria chinensis) of Galloanserae; pigeon (Columba livia domestica) of a group of Neoaves, in comparison with representatives of other Neoaves lineages, which emerged more recently in evolution: finches (Taeniopygia guttata and Erythrura gouldiae), magpie (Pica pica), and parrots (Melopsittacus undulatus and Nymphicus hollandicus). Methods: Following a perfusion with 4% buffered paraformaldehyde, immunoperoxidase reactions were performed with two types of anti-GFAP: monoclonal and polyclonal, on floating sections. Results: The entopallium (formerly "ectostriatum," a telencephalic area in birds) was GFAP-immunopositive in pigeon and in the representatives of Galloanserae but not in songbirds and parrots, which emerged more recently in evolution. The lack of GFAP expression of a brain area, however, does not mean the lack of astroglia. Lesions induced GFAP expression in the territory of GFAP-immunonegative entopallia. It proved that the GFAP immunonegativity is not due to the lack of capability, but rather the suppression of GFAP production of the astrocytes in this territory. In the other areas investigated besides the entopallium (optic tectum and cerebellum), no considerable interspecific differences of GFAP immunopositivity were found. It proved that the immunonegativity of entopallium is due to neither the general lack of GFAP expression nor the incapability of our reagents to detect GFAP in these species. Conclusion: The data are congruent with our proposal that a lack of GFAP expression has evolved in different brain areas in vertebrate evolution, typically in lineages that emerged more recently. Habitat selection has profound consequences for individual fitness, but how do animals decide where to settle? The natal habitat preference induction (NHPI) hypothesis proposes that individuals choose habitats that exhibit similar environmental cues to those experienced in early life. In this study, we first examined juvenile movements and dispersal and then tested the NHPI hypothesis in the monk parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus , an invasive species that nests primarily in pine or palm trees in our study site. Juveniles were observed ranging extensively, but we found no relationship between ranging distances prior to dispersal and subsequent natal dispersal behaviour. As predicted by NHPI, we found that dispersed individuals displayed a significant preference for nesting in their natal tree type in their first year, irrespective of tree availability. The probability of changing tree type was not influenced by individual dispersal distance, the proportion of the natal tree type available or natal tree type. We found that adult birds undertaking breeding dispersal also showed a preference for the same tree type they dispersed from when making nest site selections, demonstrating that preferences can be maintained by adults during breeding dispersal movements. Finally, conspecific breeding success did not differ between palm and pine tree nests, and so did not provide a useful source of public information regarding the suitability of the two nesting substrates. Background: Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (MO) is an infectious yeast which can cause acute gastric disturbances in birds. It has a worldwide distribution with a broad host-range of bird species. Aims: Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of MO based on the 18S rRNA gene in companion birds of Iran. Methods: A total of 54 stool samples were taken from birds (10 species) suspected of being infected. The presence of MO in collected stool samples was investigated using direct wet mount microscopy. Specific primers were designed to identify the MO 18S rRNA gene by using PCR. PCR products were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis was performed to determine the molecular diversity. Results: The obtained results demonstrated that 44.44% and 59.26% of the samples were diagnosed positive based on the first and second specific primers, respectively. MO was detected in the feces of canary, goldfinch, budgerigar, toucan, and English budge. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that MO sequence data from canaries, finches, and goldfinches had homology with an MO isolated from a German zebra finch. Moreover, MOs from cockatiels, rosy faced love birds, and budgerigars had a high phylogenetic similarity with multiple references, including American budgerigar, Japanese cockatiel, European goldfinch, and German budgerigar. Conclusion: MO exists in many species of Iranian birds, including goldfinches, budgerigars, toucans, and English budgies. As indicated by phylogenetic and polymorphism data analysis, the newly designed specific primers spanning a large portion of 18S rRNA gene of MO, provides additional tool to detect and study the molecular diversity of MO. Over 40 species of parrots, members of order Psittaciformes, have established nonnative populations globally. Monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) are among the most invasive bird species worldwide. In their introduced range, populations of monk parakeets have caused negative impacts on native species, habitats, economies, and human safety. Lethal population management has been complicated by the intelligence of monk parakeets, as they quickly alter behavior to avoid risks. Further, lethal control programs have been halted due to public controversy, as parakeets are highly charismatic. The contraceptive DiazaCon has been demonstrated to effectively reduce fertility in monk parakeets and other psittacines. In field applications, chemical control agents (e.g., toxicants and contraceptives) must be delivered in a manner that prohibits access by nontarget species. We developed and tested a parakeet‐selective feeder. The feeder allows access by parakeets and limits access by nontarget bird species by lowering a wire exclusion curtain around the feeder, requiring a zygodactyl toe arrangement to access food. We tested the parakeet‐selective feeder in trials with captive and free‐ranging monk parakeets and nontarget species in Florida, USA. Monk parakeets successfully accessed food from the parakeet‐selective feeder throughout the study. The mean number of daily feeder uses by nontarget species decreased from a high of nearly 16 uses per day when the exclusion curtain was not implemented to <1 use per day when implemented. Our findings suggest the parakeet‐selective feeder is a promising tool for delivery of bait treated with chemical control agents to manage monk parakeets and other nonnative parakeet populations, but implementation success will likely vary by target species, location, local faunal diversity, and availability of alternative forage. Egg retention, particularly in budgerigars, is an important reproductive issue. This study aimed to obtain osteometric measurement values, determine the length/width ratios between measurement values, and reveal the biometric differences in X-ray images of the pelvis of normal and egg-retention budgerigars. Pelvimetric measurements (linear distance, angle, length/width) were obtained from ventrodorsal images of the pelvis of 15 normal and 15 egg-retention budgerigars. The measured values were subjected to statistical analysis. Examining the pelvimetric data showed that the average measurement values of L1 (cranial ilium width), L4 (middle pubis width), L5 (caudal pubis width), L6 (caudal ischium width), A1 (iliac arch), LA2 (left ischiopubic angle), and RA2 (left ischiopubic angle) were significantly higher in the normal group than those of the egg retention group (P<0.05). Additionally, all length/width ratio measurements were higher in egg retention budgerigars. However, while the mean length/width ratio measurement values of L7 (left iliopubic length)/L2 (preacetabular tubercle width), L8 (right iliopubic length)/L2, L9 (synsacrum length)/L2, L7/L3 (acetabula width), L8/L3, and L9/L3 were higher in egg retention budgerigars compared to the normal group, this difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05). A1, LA2, and RA2 measurement values in normal and egg retention budgerigars were respectively found at 113.93±3.39 (°) and 95.73±2.22 (°); 115.93±2.25 (°) and 104.67±2.32 (°); 115.13±2.10 (°) and 105.07±1.98 (°). Consequently, the osteometric measurement parameters of the pelvis in the normal and egg retention budgerigars were determined using X-ray images. Comparing the short-term clinical outcomes of a tape splint, and the hybrid intramedullary pin with external fixation procedure (IMEF), a surgical approach, in the treatment of tibiotarsal fractures (TTFs) in budgerigars, and to present predictors of TTFs are objectives of this study. A total of 20 budgerigars admitted to the animal hospital with TTFs, which were treated with either the tape splint (n = 11) or IMEF (n = 9) surgery were material of the study. The treatment outcomes of both methods were compared, along with fracture predictors. The success rate of the IMEF surgery and tape splint were 6/9 (66.7%) and 9/11 (81.8%), respectively. The two methods were found to have similar success rates when compared to each other (odds ratio: 0.44, P = 0.39). The most common fracture location was the mid-shaft of the tibiotarsus for both treatment groups (IMEF: 6/9, 66.7%; tape splint: 7/11, 63.6%). The most common fracture type was oblique fractures in the IMEF surgery group (5/9, 55.6%), while it was transverse (8/11, 72.7%) in the tape splint group. There was a weak correlation (r = 0.41, P < 0.03) between the location of the fracture and the fracture type in both groups. In conclusion, both the IMEF surgery and tape splint methods have similar outcomes. The tape splint method should be preferred as the primary treatment option due to its non-invasive nature during TTFs in budgerigars. The IMEF surgery may be considered for the treatment of displaced fractures, but the involvement of the hock and stifle joints should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The order Psittaciformes taxonomically includes the families Loriidae (Lori parrots or parakeets), Cacaduidae (crested parrots and nymph parakeets) and Psittacidae (parrots and true parakeets). The ever-increasing desire to obtain specimens with plumage and especially with spectacular chromatics led in many situations to the reproduction through repeated inbreeding and in extremely close degrees of kinship (even the repetition over several generations of mother-son or father-daughter pairings), determining, secondarily, important changes in the metabolism and immune system of the obtained products, characters that were transmitted to the following generations. The maintenance conditions are not always correlated with the needs of the respective species. In many cases, the knowledge about the eco-biology of psittacines raised in captivity is quite poor, leading to an increase in their sensitivity. In recent years, in the clinic of these bird species, we have been dealing with extremely diverse pathologies or metabolic changes that have never been described or even observed in parrots in the wild. Among the difficult pathological problems in terms of diagnosis and therapeutic conduct, there are infectious diseases with bacterial etiology, often confused with a series of diseases with extremely different etiologies. Some of the most common bacterial diseases in recent times are staphylococci, with various evolutions: digestive, respiratory or integumentary. Social learning is an adaptive way of dealing with the complexity of life as it reduces the risk of trial-and-error learning. Depending on the type of information acquired, and associations formed, several mechanisms within the larger taxonomy of social learning can be distinguished. Imitation is one such process within this larger taxonomy, it is considered cognitively demanding and is associated with high-fidelity response matching. The present study reproduced a 2002 study conducted by Heyes and Saggerson, which successfully illustrated motor imitation in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). In our study, eighteen kea (Nestor notabilis) that observed a trained demonstrator remove a stopper from a test box (1) took less time from hopping on the box to feeding (response duration) in session one and (2) were faster in making a vertical removal response on the stopper once they hopped on the box (removal latency) in session one than non-observing control group individuals. In contrast to the budgerigars (Heyes and Saggerson, Ani Behav. 64:851–859, 2002) the present study could not find evidence of motor imitation in kea. The results do illustrate, however, that there were strong social effects on exploration rates indicating motivational and attentional shifts. This study aimed to determine the feed, nutrient, and energy intake of three different small/medium psittacine species fed four different feeds based on three different types of seeds (canary seeds - Phalaris canariensis, millet seeds - Panicum miliaceum, and sunflower seeds - Helianthus annuus) and extruded feed. For this study, 21 individuals of each species (21 rose-ringed parakeets - Psitaculla krameri; 21 lovebirds - Agapornis spp.; 21 cockatiels - Nymphicus hollandicus) were individually housed in cages for the evaluation of voluntary feed, nutrient, and energy intake. Rose-ringed parakeets preferentially (P < 0.001) consumed sunflower seeds, while lovebirds, selected millet seeds over extruded feed without sunflower seeds (P < 0.013). When sunflower seed was not provided, all bird species selected millet seeds over extruded feed (rose-ringed P = 0.003; cockatiels P = 0.004; lovebirds P = 0.013). Selective feeding on sunflower seeds resulted in a higher intake of fat, protein, and gross energy. Low calcium intake (lower than 0.3%) and an imbalanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio were observed in diets where extruded feed was not consistently consumed. The energy intake for the rose-ringed birds was 28.8 kcal/day, and 17,4 kcal/day for cockatiels, and lovebirds. These values exceeded the recommended maintenance energy requirement when experimental diets containing sunflower seeds and exclusively extruded feed were offered. Psittacine feed intake varies according to the type of feed and among species, and this selective feeding behavior can result in nutritional imbalances, causing chronic disorders. In some species, the ability to acquire new vocalizations persists into adulthood and may be an important mediator of social interactions. While it is generally assumed that vocal learning persists undiminished throughout the lifespan of these open-ended learners, the stability of this trait remains largely unexplored. We hypothesize that vocal learning exhibits senescence, as is typical of complex cognitive traits, and that this decline relates to age-dependent changes in social behaviour. The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), an open-ended learner that develops new contact call types that are shared with social associates upon joining new flocks, provides a robust assay for measuring the effects of ageing on vocal learning ability. We formed captive flocks of 4 previously unfamiliar adult males of the same age class, either 'young adults' (6 mo−1 y) or 'older adults' (≥ 3 y), and concurrently tracked changes in contact call structure and social interactions over time. Older adults exhibited decreased vocal diversity, which may be related to sparser and weaker affiliative bonds observed in older adults. Older adults, however, displayed equivalent levels of vocal plasticity and vocal convergence compared to young adults, suggesting that many components of vocal learning are largely maintained into later adulthood in an open-ended learner. Many birds move fast into dark nest cavities forcing the visual system to adapt to low light intensities. Their visual system takes between 15 and 60 min for complete dark adaptation, but little is known about the visual performance of birds during the first seconds in low light intensities. In a forced two-choice behavioural experiment we studied how well budgerigars can discriminate stimuli of different luminance directly after entering a darker environment. The birds made their choices within about 1 s and did not wait to adapt their visual system to the low light intensities. When moving from a bright facility into an environment with 0.5 log unit lower illuminance, the budgerigars detected targets with a luminance of 0.825 cd m−2 on a black background. When moving into an environment with 1.7 or 3.5 log units lower illuminance, they detected targets with luminances between 0.106 and 0.136 cd m−2. In tests with two simultaneously displayed targets, the birds discriminated similar luminance differences between the targets (Weber fraction of 0.41–0.54) in all light levels. Our results support the notion that partial adaptation of bird eyes to the lower illumination occurring within 1 s allows them to safely detect and feed their chicks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dominance hierarchies can provide many benefits to individuals, such as access to resources or mates, depending on their ranks. In some species, rank can emerge as a product of a group's history of social interactions. However, it can be difficult to determine whether social history is critical to rank in observation-based studies. Here, we investigated rank dynamics in three captive groups of monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus). We used experimental social perturbations to test whether social history shapes rank emergence in these groups. Using targeted removals and reintroductions, we tested whether differently ranked individuals could re-take their ranks in hierarchies after reintroduction following their removal period from the group. We performed perturbations that consisted of an 8-day removal and an 8-day reintroduction period of 15 differently ranked focal birds. We found that no focal birds could regain their previous rank immediately following reintroduction and that the top-ranked birds showed greater relative rank loss than middle/low-ranked birds. We also found that morphology, specifically bodyweight, was unassociated with rank. Combined with previous results, this experiment supports the hypothesis that rank in monk parakeet dominance hierarchies is more likely to be an emergent outcome of past interactions and memory rather than based on individual characteristics. Gaining a better understanding of how individuals achieve and maintain rank can give insight into the role of cognition on rank acquisition, as rank position can have significant biological effects on individuals in hierarchically structured groups. Avian anesthesia is a controversial area of study due to the differences between birds and mammals morpho physiology. This makes necessary to develop reliable protocols for birds in captivity, which contributes to their welfare under human care. Bird anesthesiology today represents a veterinary clinical activity that demands special care for patients requiring surgical procedures. This study describes the parameters of SpO2, cardiac activity, heart and respiratory rate during anesthesia with isoflurane for Melopsittacus undulatus. 12 males and 7 females were monitored during the anesthetic stages. Anesthetic induction lasted 1:30 ± 0:31 min in males and 2:19 ± 0:16 min in females, with an average maintenance time of 7:00 ± 1:39 min. No significant differences were found in anesthetic times between females and males (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant variation (p<0.05) of SpO2 in the recovery period, females had higher oxygen saturation (71±4%) compared to males (89±2%). In the assessment of cardiac function during anesthesia, no significant differences were detected between males and females (p>0.05). Information about the morphology of the budgerigar intestines is a necessary condition for the preparation of diets for feeding, prevention and treatment of diseases of the digestive system, the state of which determines the intensity of growth and development of the bird’s body. The features of the histological structure of the intestines of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) of 9 ages: 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60, 180 and 365 days of age were studied. Histological preparations were made according to the classical method with hematoxylin and eosin staining of sections, according to Mallory and Grimelius. Morphometric parameters of microstructures were determined on preparations from a transverse section of the middle section of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and rectum. In the intestinal wall of the budgerigar, three membranes were identified: mucous, muscular and serous. Three layers were found in the mucosa: epithelial, lamina propria, and muscular lamina. The predominant type of epitheliocytes were rim enterocytes, goblet cells were found in a smaller number, the number of which increased towards the rectum, as well as enteroendocrine cells, which were located mainly in the crypts. Themuscularis mucosa consists of several layers of cells of smooth muscle tissue, which delimits the lamina propria from the muscle membrane, encircles the crypts, and accompanies the blood capillaries of the villi. The submucosa was not found. The muscular coat consists of two layers formed by smooth muscle tissue: the inner circular and the outer longitudinal. The enteric nervous system is represented by two nerve plexuses: the submucosal, located between the muscularis mucosa, and the myenteric, located in the outer layer of the muscular membrane. There was a general pattern of increase in changes in most parameters with age : the diameter of the intestine, wall thickness, mucous membrane and muscle membrane, height, width and surface area of the villi, the depth of the crypts.Changes in the size of the microstructures of the intestines were asynchronous. The most intensive changes in the size of microstructures occurred in the first month after hatching, especially in the first week. They corresponded to the values of an adult bird mainly at 21–30 days of age. The introduction of invasive birds into new ecosystems frequently has negative consequences for the resident populations. Accordingly, the increasing population of monk parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus) in Europe may pose a threat because we have little knowledge of the viruses they can transmit to native naïve species. In this study, we describe a new dependoparvovirus detected by metagenomic analysis of cloacal samples from 28 apparently healthy individuals captured in urban areas of Madrid, Spain. The genomic characterization revealed that the genome encoded the NS and VP proteins typical of parvoviruses and was flanked by inverted terminal repeats. No recombination signal was detected. The phylogenetic analysis showed that it was closely related to a parvovirus isolated in a wild psittacid in China. Both viruses share 80% Rep protein sequence identity and only 64% with other dependoparvoviruses identified in Passeriformes, Anseriformes, and Piciformes and are included in a highly supported clade, which could be considered a new species. The prevalence was very low, and none of the additional 73 individuals tested positive by PCR. Avian Polyomaviruses are imposing severe health problems in budgerigars, non-budgerigar Psittacine species, and non-psittacine species all over the world, including Pakistan. It marks future challenges for aviculturists and pet store owners, causing significant financial losses. This study emphasizes the occurrence and molecular characterization of polyomaviruses in budgerigars and non-budgerigar Psittacine species. Thirty-five feather Samples of adult birds and 15 tissue samples of deceased birds were collected for the detection of Avian polyomavirus based on the VP1 gene. Screening of samples by PCR revealed the presence of 550 bp VP1 gene in deceased nestlings of two lovebirds and four budgerigars, while the feather samples of adult birds were all negative for VP1 gene. The overall positive rate of APV in Psittacine birds was 6/50 (12 %), and the distribution frequency of virus among species was 4/19 (20 %) in Budgerigars and 2/31 (6.4 %) in non-budgerigar. Positive samples were subjected to partial sequencing which showed a nucleotide similarity index of VP1 gene between 97.46 % & 99.6 % with reference sequences in GenBank. The main problem that researchers are dealing with is the scarcity of data on the prevalence and identification of APV in Pakistan.
