1. Measurement of Proton-Induced Reaction Cross Sections in Ti, Ni and Zr near the Threshold.

Abstract

A stacked-foil method was used to study the cross section of the Ti(p,X)44Ti, Ni(p,X)56Ni and Zr(p,X)88Zr reactions with energies up to 30 MeV. Natural targets of Ti, Ni and Zr were irradiated with a 30 MeV proton beam and the products were measured by residual activity using a germanium hyper-pure detector with energy resolution better than 2 keV. Due to the low irradiation energy, the (p,t) is considered the dominant channel for the formation of the final product. A good agreement between our results and other published data was found in all cases. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Given a surface defined as the graph of a real polynomial in two variables, we analyze some basic subsets characterized by its tangential singularities. If the parabolic curve is compact we provide certain criteria to determine when the unbounded component of its complement is hyperbolic. Moreover, we obtain an upper bound of the number of Gaussian cusps that holds even if the parabolic curve is non compact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article discusses a case of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) outbreak on a Peruvian Navy ship in June-July 2009. The disease, which was believed to have been contracted in San Francisco, California, resulted in febrile acute respiratory infection (FARI) among the crew of the ship. The disease was detected through the use of real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). The results of the probe conducted by the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment (NMRCD) and the Peruvian Navy are also examined.
