Search

Recently, there has been renewed interest in the Be X-ray binary (Be/XRB) SAX J1324.4−6200 because of its spatial coincidence with a variable γ-ray source detected by Fermi/LAT. To explore more thoroughly its properties, new X-ray observations were carried out in 2023 by NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, and Swift satellites, jointly covering the energy range from 0.2 − 79 keV. SAX J1324.4−6200 was caught at an X-ray flux of ∼10−11 erg cm−2 s−1. The X-ray spectrum fits well with an absorbed power law with a high energy cutoff. Other acceptable fits require an additional blackbody component (kTbb ≈ 1.1 keV) or a Gaussian in absorption (Egabs ≈ 6.9 keV). We measured a NuSTAR spin period of 175.8127 ± 0.0036 s and an XMM-Newton spin period of 175.862 ± 0.025 s. We show that all the available spin period measurements of SAX J1324.4−6200, spanning 29 yr, are highly correlated with time, resulting in a remarkably stable spin-down of Ṗ = 6.09 ± 0.06 × 10−9 s s−1. We find that if SAX J1324.4−6200 hosts an accretion-powered pulsar, accretion torque models indicate a surface magnetic field of ∼1012 − 13 G. The X-ray properties emerging from our analysis strenghten the hypothesis that SAX J1324.4−6200 belongs to the small group of persistent Be/XRBs. We also performed radio observations with the Parkes Murriyang telescope, to search for radio pulsations. However, no radio pulsations compatible with the rotational ephemeris of SAX J1324.4−6200 were detected. We rule out the hypothesis that SAX J1324.4−6200 is a γ-ray binary where the emission is produced by interactions between the pulsar and the companion winds. Other models commonly used to account for the production of γ-rays in accreting pulsars cannot reproduce the bright emission from SAX J1324.4−6200. We examined other possible mechanisms behind the γ-ray emission and note that there is a ∼0.5% chance probability that an unknown extragalactic active galactic nucleus (AGN) observed through the Galactic plane may coincidentally fall within the Fermi/LAT error circle of the source and be responsible for the γ-ray emission. Stellar coronal sources have been observed in the past not only for their astrophysical interest in the field of binary system evolution and interaction but also for their invaluable roles as benchmarks for plasma spectral models and as calibration sources for high resolution spectroscopic X-ray instruments. These include the gratings on-board Chandra and XMM-Newton , as well as the new generation of high resolution capable-detectors recently flown on-board XRISM and planned for the future also onboard the Athena and the LEM missions. In our previous paper exploiting Chandra /HETG observations of the prototypical coronal source Capella, it has been shown that the centroid energies of the many X-ray emission lines detected in the spectrum of this object change as a function of time due to the Doppler modulation within the binary. This is an effect that needs to be corrected while performing calibrations of high-resolution X-ray instruments. In this paper, we extend our previous work on Capella to other known stellar coronal sources that have been observed with the Chandra /HETG (11 objects in total). We measure in several objects clear trends in the velocity shifts along the orbit of the primary star, meaning that in these sources one of the two star components is largely dominating the high energy emission. In a number of systems the trend in the velocity shift is not obvious. This can be ascribed to the fact that both stellar components contribute significantly to the X-ray emission. Supergiant fast X-ray transients are wind-fed binaries hosting neutron star accretors, which display a peculiar variability in the X-ray domain. Different models have been proposed to explain this variability and the strength of the compact object magnetic field is generally considered a key parameter to discriminate among possible scenarios. We present here the analysis of two simultaneous observational campaigns carried out with Swift and NuSTAR targeting the supergiant fast X-ray transient sources AX J1841.0−0536 and SAX J1818.6−1703. A detailed spectral analysis is presented for both sources, with the main goal of hunting for cyclotron resonant scattering features that can provide a direct measurement of the neutron star magnetic field intensity. AX J1841.0−0536 was caught during the observational campaign at a relatively low flux. The source broad-band spectrum was featureless and could be well-described by using a combination of a hot blackbody and a power-law component with no measurable cut-off energy. In the case of SAX J1818.6−1703, the broad-band spectrum presented a relatively complex curvature which could be described by an absorbed cut-off power law (including both a cut-off and a folding energy) and featured a prominent edge at ∼7 keV, compatible with being associated to the presence of a 'screen' of neutral material partly obscuring the X-ray source. The fit to the broad-band spectrum also required the addition of a moderately broad (∼1.6 keV) feature centred at ∼14 keV. If interpreted as a cyclotron resonant scattering feature, our results would indicate for SAX J1818.6−1703 a relatively low-magnetized neutron star (∼1.2 × 1012 G). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first Swift /XRT long-term monitoring of 2S 0114+650, a wind-fed supergiant X-ray binary for which both orbital and superorbital periods are known (P orb ∼ 11.6 d and P sup ∼ 30.8 d). Our campaign, summing up to ∼79 ks, is the most intense and complete sampling of the X-ray light curve of this source with a sensitive pointed X-ray instrument, and covers 17 orbital, and 6 superorbital cycles. The combination of flexibility, sensitivity, and soft X-ray coverage of the X-ray telescope (XRT) allowed us to confirm previously reported spectral changes along the orbital cycle of the source and unveil the variability in its spectral parameters as a function of the superorbital phase. For completeness, we also report on a similar analysis carried out by exploiting XRT archival data on three additional wind-fed supergiant X-ray binaries IGR J16418−4532, IGR J16479−4514, and IGR J16493−4348. For these sources, the archival data provided coverage along several superorbital cycles but our analysis could not reveal any significant spectral variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on a simultaneous observational campaign with both Swift /XRT and NuSTAR targeting the symbiotic X-ray binary (SyXB) IGR J16194-2810. The main goal of the campaign was to investigate the possible presence of cyclotron scattering absorption features in the broad-band spectrum of the source, and help advance our understanding of the process of neutron star formation via the accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf. The 1–30 keV spectrum of the source, as measured during our campaign, did not reveal the presence of any statistically significant absorption feature. The spectrum could be well described using a model comprising a thermal black-body hot component, most likely emerging from the surface of the accreting neutron star, and a power law with no measurable cut-off energy (and affected by a modest absorption column density). Compared to previous analyses in the literature, we could rule out the presence of a colder thermal component emerging from an accretion disc, compatible with the idea that IGR J16194-2810 is a wind-fed binary (as most of the SyXBs). Our results were strengthened by exploiting the archival XRT and INTEGRAL data, extending the validity of the spectral model used up to 0.3–40 keV and demonstrating that IGR J16194-2810 is unlikely to undergo significant spectral variability over time in the X-ray domain. Capella is the brightest chromospherically active binary in the sky, hosting a cooler G8III giant (Aa) and a hotter G1III companion (Ab). The source has been extensively observed in the X-rays in the past decades not only for its astrophysical interest in the field of corona sources, but also for in-flight calibrations of space-based X-ray instruments. In 2006, it was demonstrated using Chandra/High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observations that Aa is the main contributor to Capella's X-ray emission, as the centroid energies of the emission lines are Doppler shifted along the orbit of the G8III giant (an aspect that has to be taken into consideration for calibration activities of X-ray instruments). In this paper, we extend the previous analysis performed in 2006 by re-analysing in a homogeneous way all Chandra/HETG observations performed in the direction of Capella. By doubling the amount of data available, we strengthened the conclusion that Capella Aa is the dominant emitter in soft X-rays. We did not find any evidence of a statistically significant contribution to this emission by the Ab giant. Symbiotic X-ray binaries are systems hosting a neutron star accreting form the wind of a late-type companion. These are rare objects and so far only a handful of them are known. One of the most puzzling aspects of the symbiotic X-ray binaries is the possibility that they contain strongly magnetized neutron stars. These are expected to be evolutionary much younger compared to their evolved companions and could thus be formed through the (yet poorly known) accretion induced collapse of a white dwarf. In this paper, we perform a broad-band X-ray and soft γ-ray spectroscopy of two known symbiotic binaries, Sct X−1 and 4U 1700+24, looking for the presence of cyclotron scattering features that could confirm the presence of strongly magnetized NSs. We exploited available Chandra ,  Swift , and NuSTAR data. We find no evidence of cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) in the case of Sct X−1 but in the case of 4U 1700+24 we suggest the presence of a possible CRSF at ∼16 keV and its first harmonic at ∼31 keV, although we could not exclude alternative spectral models for the broad-band fit. If confirmed by future observations, 4U 1700+24 could be the second symbiotic X-ray binary with a highly magnetized accretor. We also report about our long-term monitoring of the last discovered symbiotic X-ray binary IGR J17329−2731 performed with Swift /XRT. The monitoring revealed that, as predicted, in 2017 this object became a persistent and variable source, showing X-ray flares lasting for a few days and intriguing obscuration events that are interpreted in the context of clumpy wind accretion. We introduce the notion of -Hermitianity of a matrix, as a generalization of Hermitianity, and, more generally, of closure by -Hermitianity of a set of matrices. Many well known algebras, like upper and lower triangular Toeplitz, Circulants and matrices, as well as certain algebras that have dimension higher than the matrix order, turn out to be closed by -Hermitianity. As an application, we generalize some theorems about displacement decompositions presented in [1, 2], by assuming the matrix algebras involved closed by -Hermitianity. Even if such hypothesis on the structure is not necessary in the case of algebras generated by one matrix, as it has been proved in [3], our result is relevant because it could yield new low complexity displacement formulas involving not one-matrix-generated commutative algebras. We present in this paper a first step toward a semi-analytical treatment of the accretion process in wind-fed neutron star (NS) supergiant X-ray binaries with eccentric orbits. We consider the case of a spherically symmetric wind for the supergiant star and a simplified model for the accretion on to the compact object. A self-consistent calculation of the photoionization of the stellar wind by the X-rays from the accreting NS is included. This effect is convolved with the modulation of the mass accretion rate induced by the eccentric orbit to obtain the expected X-ray luminosity of a system along the orbit. As part of our results, we first show that the bi-modality of low- and high-X-ray luminosity solutions for supergiant X-ray binaries reported in previous papers is likely to result from the effect of the NS approaching first and then moving away from the companion (without coexisting simultaneously). We propose that episodes of strong wind photoionization can give rise to off-states of the sources. Our calculations are applied to the case of a few classical supergiant X-ray binary systems with known eccentricities (Vela X-1, 4U 1907+09, GX 301-2) and to the case of the only supergiant fast X-ray transient with a confirmed eccentric orbit, IGR J08408-4503. The results are compared with observational findings on these sources. We also discuss the next steps needed to expand the calculations toward a more comprehensive treatment in future publications. Supergiant fast-X-ray transients (SFXTs) are a sub-class of supergiant high-mass X-ray binaries hosting a neutron star accreting from the stellar wind of a massive OB companion. Compared to the classical systems, SFXTs display a pronounced variability in X-rays that has long been (at least partly) ascribed to the presence of clumps in the stellar wind. Here, we report on the first set of results of an ongoing XMM-Newton observational program searching for spectroscopic variability during the X-ray flares and outbursts of the SFXTs. The goal of the paper is to present the observational program and show that the obtained results are in agreement with expectations, with a number of flares (between one and four) generally observed per source and per observation (20 ks-long, on average). We base our work on a systematic and uniform analysis method optimized to consistently search for spectral signatures of a variable absorption column density, as well as other parameters of the spectral continuum. Our preliminary results show that the program is successful and the outcomes of the analysis support previous findings that most of the X-ray flares seem associated to the presence of a massive structure approaching and being accreted by the compact object. However, we cannot rule out that other mechanisms are at work together with clumps to enhance the X-ray variability of SFXTs. This is expected according to current theoretical models. The success of these observations shows that our observational program can be a powerful instrument to deepen our understanding of the X-ray variability in SFXTs. Further observations will help us to obtain a statistically robust sample. This will be required to conduct a systematic analysis of the whole SFXT class with the ultimate goal being to disentangle the roles of the different mechanisms giving rise to these events. The estimate of the magnetospheric radius in a disk-fed neutron star X-ray binary is a long standing problem in high energy astrophysics. We have reviewed the magnetospheric radius calculations in the so-called magnetically threaded disk model, comparing the simplified approach originally proposed by Ghosh & Lamb (1979, ApJ, 232, 259) with the revised version proposed by Wang (1987, A&A, 183, 257), Wang (1995, ApJ, 449, L153), and Wang (1997, ApJ, 475, L135). We show that for a given set of fixed parameters (assuming also a comparable screening factor of the neutron star magnetic field by the currents induced on the disk surface) the revised magnetically threaded disk model predicts a magnetospheric radius that is significantly smaller than that derived from the Ghosh & Lamb (1979) treatment. For a fixed value of the neutron star magnetic field and a wide range of mass accretion rates, the inclusion of a large inclination angle between the neutron star rotation and magnetic field axes (χ ≳ 60 deg) leads to a further decrease of the magnetospheric radius. To illustrate the relevance of these calculations, we consider, as an example, the case of the transitional pulsars. During the so-called high mode of their sub-luminous accretion disk state, these sources have shown X-ray pulsations interpreted as due to accretion at an unprecedented low luminosity level compared to other neutron stars in X-ray binaries. In the context of the magnetic threaded disk model, we show that accretion at luminosities of ∼1033 erg s−1 (and thus accretion-driven X-ray pulsations) can be more easily explained when the prescription of the magnetospheric radius provided by Wang (1997) is used. This avoids the need to invoke very strong propeller outflows in the transitional pulsars, as proposed in other literature works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the results of the multiwavelength campaign carried out after the discovery of the INTEGRAL transient IGR J17329- 2731. The optical data collected with the SOAR telescope allowed us to identify the donor star in this system as a late M giant at a distance of 2.7+3.4-1.2 kpc. The data collected quasi-simultaneously with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR showed the presence of a modulation with a period of 6680 ± 3 s in the X-ray light curves of the source. This unveils that the compact object hosted in this system is a slowly rotating neutron star. The broadband X-ray spectrum showed the presence of a strong absorption >1023 cm-2) and prominent emission lines at 6.4 keV, and 7.1 keV. These features are usually found in wind-fed systems, in which the emission lines result from the fluorescence of the X-rays from the accreting compact object on the surrounding stellar wind. The presence of a strong absorption line around ~21 keV in the spectrum suggests a cyclotron origin, thus allowing us to estimate the neutron star magnetic field as ~2.4 Ö 1012 G. All evidence thus suggests IGR J17329-2731 is a symbiotic X-ray binary. As no X-ray emission was ever observed from the location of IGR J17329-2731 by INTEGRAL (or other X-ray facilities) during the past 15 yr in orbit and considering that symbiotic X-ray binaries are known to be variable but persistent X-ray sources, we concluded that INTEGRAL caught the first detectable X-ray emission from IGR J17329-2731 when the source shined as a symbiotic X-ray binary. The SwiftXRT monitoring performed up to ~3 months after the discovery of the source, showed that it maintained a relatively stable X-ray flux and spectral properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flares are accompanied by a remarkable spectral variability, with the X-ray emission being generally softer at the peak of the flares. A strong quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) is detected at ~8 mHz in the power spectrum of the source and clearly associated with the flaring-like behaviour. This feature has the strongest power at soft X-rays (≲3 keV). We carried out a dedicated hardness-ratio-resolved spectral analysis and a QPO phase-resolved spectral analysis, together with an in-depth study of the source-timing properties, to investigate the origin of this behaviour. We suggest that the unusual variability of IGR J00291+5934 observed by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR could be produced by a heartbeat-like mechanism, similar to that observed in black hole X-ray binaries. We update the ephemeris of the eclipsing high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems LMC X-4, Cen X-3, 4U 1700-377, 4U 1538- 522, SMC X-1, IGR J18027-2016, Vela X-1,IGR J17252-3616, XTE J1855-026, and OAO 1657-415 with the help of more than ten years of monitoring these sources with the All Sky Monitor onboard RXTE and with the Integral Soft Gamma-Ray Imager onboard INTEGRAL. These results are used to refine previous measurements of the orbital period decay of all sources (where available) and provide the first accurate values of the apsidal advance in Vela X-1 and 4U 1538-522. Updated values for the masses of the neutron stars hosted in the ten HMXBs are also provided, as well as the long-term light curves folded on the best determined orbital parameters of the sources. These light curves reveal complex eclipse ingresses and egresses that are understood mostly as being caused by accretion wakes. Our results constitute a database to be used for population and evolutionary studies of HMXBs and for theoretical modeling of long-term accretion in wind-fed X-ray binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The usage of cumulative luminosity distributions, constructed thanks to the long-term observations available through wide field hard X-ray imagers, has been recently exploited to study the averaged high energy emission (>17 keV) from supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) and classical Supergiant High Mass X-ray Binaries (SgXBs). Here, we take advantage of the long term monitorings now available with Swift /XRT to construct for the first time the cumulative luminosity distributions of a number of SFXTs and the classical SgXB IGR J18027-2016 in the soft X-ray domain with a high sensitivity focusing X-ray telescope (0.3–10 keV). By complementing previous results obtained in the hard X-rays, we found that classical SgXBs are characterized by cumulative distributions with a single knee around ∼ 10 36 –10 37 erg s −1 , while SFXTs are found to be systematically sub-luminous and their distributions are shifted at significantly lower luminosities (a factor of ∼ 10–100). As the luminosity states in which these sources spend most of their time are typically below the sensitivity limit of large field of view hard X-ray imagers, we conclude that soft X-ray monitorings carried out with high sensitivity telescopes are particularly crucial to reconstruct the complete profile of the SFXT cumulative luminosity distributions. The difference between the cumulative luminosity distributions of classical SgXBs and SFXTs is interpreted in terms of accretion from a structured wind in the former sources and the presence of magnetic/centrifugal gates or a quasi-spherical settling accretion regime in the latter. IGR J17361-4441 was discovered by INTEGRAL undergoing its first detectable X-ray outburst in 2011 and was initially classified as an accreting X-ray binary in the globular cluster NGC6388. A reanalysis of the outburst data collected with INTEGRAL and Swift suggested that the enhanced X-ray emission from IGRJ17361-4441 could have been caused by a rare tidal disruption event of a terrestrial-icy planet by a white dwarf. In this letter we report on the analysis of XMM-Newton data collected in 2011 during the outburst from IGRJ17361-4441. Our analysis revealed the presence of a 100 mHz quasi-periodic oscillation in the X-ray emission from the source and confirmed the presence of a soft thermal component (kT∼0.08 keV) in its spectrum. We discuss these findings in the context of the different possibilities proposed to explain the nature of IGR J17361-4441. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The source IGR J18245-2452 is the fifteenth discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar and the first neutron star to show direct evidence of a transition between accretion- and rotation-powered emission states. These swings provided the strongest confirmation to date of the pulsar recycling scenario. During the two XMM-Newton observations that were carried out while the source was in outburst in April 2013, IGR J18245-2452 displayed a unique and peculiar X-ray variability. In this work, we report on a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton data and focus on the timing and spectral variability of the source. In the 0.4-11 keV energy band, IGR J18245-2452 continuously switched between lower and higher intensity states, with typical variations in flux by factor of ~100 on time scales as short as a few seconds. These variations in the source intensity were sometimes accompanied by dramatic spectral hardening, during which the X-ray power-law photon index varied from Γ = 1:7 to Γ = 0:9. The pulse profiles extracted at different count-rates, hardnesses, and energies also showed a complex variability. These phenomena were never observed in accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, at least not on such a short time-scale. Fast variability was also found in the 5.5 and 9 GHz ATCA radio observations that were carried out for about 6 h during the outburst. We interpret the variability observed from IGR J18245-2452 in terms of a hiccup accretion phase, during which the accretion of material from the inner boundary of the Keplerian disk is reduced by the onset of centrifugal inhibition of accretion, possibly causing the launch of outflows. Changes across accretion and propeller regimes have been long predicted and reproduced by magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, but have never observed to produce as extreme a variability as that shown by IGR J18245-2452. XTE J1743-363 is a poorly known hard X-ray transient, which displays short and intense flares similar to those observed from supergiant fast X-ray transients. The probable optical counterpart shows spectral properties similar to those of an M8 III giant, thus suggesting that XTE J1743-363 belongs to the class of the symbiotic X-ray binaries class. In this paper we report on the first dedicated monitoring campaign of the source in the soft X-ray range with XMM-Newton and Swift /XRT. These observations confirmed the association of XTE J1743-363 with the previously suggested M8 III giant and the classification of the source as a member of the symbiotic X-ray binaries. In the soft X-ray domain, XTE J1743-363 displays a high absorption (∼6 × 1022 cm-2) and variability on time scales of hundreds to few thousand seconds, typical of wind-accreting systems. A relatively faint flare (peak X-ray flux 3 × 10-11 erg/cm²/s) lasting ∼4 ks is recorded during the XMM-Newton observation and interpreted in terms of the wind accretion scenario. Abstract: Supergiant fast X-ray transients are a subclass of high mass X-ray binaries displaying a peculiar and still poorly understood extreme variability in the X-ray domain. These sources undergo short sporadic outbursts ( 1036–1037 ergs−1), lasting few ks at the most, and spend a large fraction of their time in an intermediate luminosity state at about 1033–1034 ergs−1. The sporadic and hardly predictable outbursts of supergiant fast X-ray transients were so far best discovered by large field of view (FOV) coded-mask instruments; their lower luminosity states require, instead, higher sensitivity focusing instruments to be studied in sufficient details. In this contribution, we provide a summary of the current knowledge on supergiant fast X-ray transients and explore the contribution that the new space mission concept LOFT, the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing, will be able to provide in the field of research of these objects. Abstract: Environmental protection of Antarctica is a fundamental principle of the Antarctic Treaty. Impact assessment and significance evaluation are due for every human activity on the remote continent. While chemical and biological contaminations are widely studied, very little is known about the electromagnetic pollution levels. In this frame, we have evaluated the significance of the impact of Mario Zucchelli Antarctic Station (Northern Victoria Land) on the local geomagnetic field. We have flown a high resolution aeromagnetic survey in drape mode at 320m over the Station, covering an area of 2km2. The regional and the local field have been separated by a third order polynomial fitting. After the identification of the anthropic magnetic anomaly due to the Station, we have estimated the magnetic field at the ground level by downward continuation with an original inversion scheme regularized by a minimum gradient support functional to avoid high frequency noise effects. The resulting anthropic static magnetic field at ground extends up to 650m far from the Station and reaches a maximum peak to peak value of about 2800nT. This anthropic magnetic anomaly may interact with biological systems, raising the necessity to evaluate the significance of the static magnetic impact of human installations in order to protect the electromagnetic environment and the biota of Antarctica. Context. Circinus X-1 is a neutron-star-accreting X-ray binary in a wide (Porb = 16.6 d), eccentric orbit. After two years of relatively low X-ray luminosity, in May 2010 Circinus X-1 went into outburst, reaching 0.4 Crab flux. This outburst lasted for about two orbital cycles and was followed by another shorter and fainter outburst in June. Aims. We focus here on the broadband X-ray spectral evolution of the source as it spans about three order of magnitudes in flux. We attempt to relate luminosity, spectral shape, local absorption, and orbital phase. Methods. We use multiple Rossi-XTE/PCA (3.0-25 keV) and Swift/XRT (1.0-9.0 keV) observations and a 20 ks long Chandra/HETGS observation (1.0-9.0 keV), to comprehensively track the spectral evolution of the source during all the outbursting phases. These observations were taken every two/three days and cover about four orbital cycles. The PCA data mostly cover the major outburst, the XRT data monitor the declining phase of the major outburst and all the phases of the minor outburst, and Chandra data provide an essential snapshot of the end of this overall outbursting phase. Results. The X-ray spectrum can be satisfactorily described by a thermal Comptonization model with variable neutral local absorption in all phases of the outburst. No other additive component is statistically required. The first outburst decays linearly, with an ankle in the light curve as the flux decreases below ∼5 × 10-10 erg cm-2 s-1. At the same time, the source shows a clear spectral state transition from an optically thick to an optically thin state. While the characteristics of the first, bright, outburst can be interpreted within the disk-instability scenario, the following, minor, outburst shows peculiarities that cannot be easily reconciled in this framework. MAXI J1836-194 is a transient black-hole candidate discovered in outburst on 30 August 2011. We report on the available INTEGRAL, Swift, and RXTE observations performed in the direction of the source during this event before 55 864 MJD. Combining the broad band (0.6-200 keV) spectral and timing information obtained from these data with the results of radio observations, we show that the event displayed by MAXI J1836-194 is another example of "failed" outburst. During the first ∼20 days after the onset of the event, the source underwent a transition from the canonical low/hard to the hard intermediate state, while reaching the highest X-ray flux. In the ∼40 days following the peak of the outburst, the source displayed a progressive spectral hardening and a decrease in the X-ray flux, thus it entered again the low/hard state and began its return to quiescence. IGR J18483−0311 was discovered with INTEGRAL in 2003 and later classified as a supergiant fast X-ray transient. It was observed in outburst many times, but its quiescent state is still poorly known. Here, we present the results of XMM–Newton, Swift and Chandra observations of IGR J18483−0311. These data improved the X-ray position of the source, and provided new information on the timing and spectral properties of IGR J18483−0311 in quiescence. We report the detection of pulsations in the quiescent X-ray emission of this source, and give for the first time a measurement of the spin-period derivative of this source. In IGR J18483−0311, the measured spin-period derivative of likely results from light travel time effects in the binary. We compare the most recent observational results of IGR J18483−0311 and SAX J1818.6−1703, the two supergiant fast X-ray transients for which a similar orbital period has been measured. Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are a new class of high-mass X-ray binaries recently discovered with INTEGRAL. Hours-long outbursts from these sources have been observed on numerous occasions at luminosities of , whereas their low-level activity at has not been deeply investigated yet due to the paucity of long pointed observations with high-sensitivity X-ray telescopes. Here, we report on the first long (∼32 ks) pointed XMM–Newton observation of IGR J16479−4514, a member of this new class. This observation was carried out in 2008 March, shortly after an outburst from this source, with the main goal of investigating its low-level emission and physical mechanisms that drive the source activity. Results from the timing, spectral and spatial analysis of the EPIC-PN XMM–Newton observation show that the X-ray source IGR J16479−4514 underwent an episode of sudden obscuration, possibly an X-ray eclipse by the supergiant companion. We also found evidence for a soft X-ray extended halo around the source that is most readily interpreted as due to scattering by dust along the line of sight to IGR J16479−4514. We discuss this result in the context of the gated accretion scenarios that have been proposed to interpret the behaviour of SFXT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper the problem of restoring a two-dimensional tomographic medical image is considered. The emission function is defined on a plane circular domain , and has to be restored from data collected by a SPECT machine. Through an approach known as natural pixel discretization, the solution is expressed as a linear combination of functions belonging to a suitable basis. We consider here four different bases, all of them giving a highly structured coefficient matrix. The linear system obtained in this way can be solved efficiently by means of the fast Fourier transform. The computational cost and the performance of the bases are compared. When the data are contaminated by Poissonian noise, the numerical experimentation shows that all the bases are almost equivalent from the point of view of the restoration efficiency. Hence the choice of a basis should rely on other considerations, as for instance the computational cost. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We describe rank structures in generalized inverses of possibly rectangular banded matrices. In particular, we show that various kinds of generalized inverses of rectangular banded matrices have submatrices whose rank depends on the bandwidth and on the nullity of the matrix. Aeromagnetic signatures over the Edward VII Peninsula (E7) provide new insight into the largely ice-covered and unexplored eastern flank of the Ross Sea Rift (RSR). Positive anomalies, 10–40 km in wavelength and with amplitudes ranging from 50 to 500 nT could reveal buried Late Devonian(?)–Early Carboniferous Ford Granodiorite plutons. This is suggested by similar magnetic signature over exposed, coeval Admiralty Intrusives of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM). Geochemical data from mid-Cretaceous Byrd Coast Granite, contact metamorphic effects on Swanson Formation and hornblende-bearing granitoid dredge samples strengthen this magnetic interpretation, making alternative explanations less probable. These magnetic anomalies over formerly adjacent TAM and western Marie Byrd Land (wMBL) terranes resemble signatures typically observed over magnetite-rich magmatic arc plutons. Shorter wavelength (5 km) 150 nT anomalies could speculatively mark mid-Cretaceous mafic dikes of the E7, similar to those exposed over the adjacent Ford Ranges. Anomalies with amplitudes of 100–360 nT over the Sulzberger Bay and at the margin of the Sulzberger Ice Shelf likely reveal mafic Late Cenozoic(?) volcanic rocks emplaced along linear rift fabric trends. Buried volcanic rock at the margin of the interpreted half-graben-like “Sulzberger Ice Shelf Block” is modelled in the Kizer Island area. The volcanic rock is marked by a coincident positive Bouguer gravity anomaly. Late Cenozoic volcanic rocks over the TAM, in the RSR, and beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet exhibit comparable magnetic anomaly signature reflecting regional West Antarctic Rift fabric. Interpreted mafic magmatism of the E7 is likely related to mid-Cretaceous and Late Cenozoic regional crustal extension and possible mantle plume activity over wMBL. Magnetic lineaments of the E7 are enhanced in maximum horizontal gradient of pseudo-gravity, vertical derivative and 3D Euler Deconvolution maps. Apparent vertical offsets in magnetic basement at the location of the lineaments and spatially associated mafic dikes and volcanic rocks result from 2.5D magnetic modelling. A rift-related fault origin for the magnetic lineaments, segmenting the E7 region into horst and graben blocks, is proposed by comparison with offshore seismic reflection, marine gravity, on-land gravity, radio-echo sounding, apatite fission track data and structural geology. The NNW magnetic lineament, which we interpret to mark the eastern RSR shoulder, forms the western margin of the “Alexandra Mountains horst”. This fundamental aeromagnetic feature lies on strike with the Colbeck Trough, a prominent NNW half-graben linked to Late Cretaceous(?) and Cenozoic(?) faulting in the eastern RSR. East–west and north–north–east to NE magnetic trends are also imaged. Magnetic trends, if interpreted as reflecting the signature of rift-related normal faults, would imply N–S to NE crustal extension followed by later northwest–southeast directed extension. NW–SE extension would be compatible with Cenozoic(?) oblique RSR rifting. Previous structural data from the Ford Ranges have, however, been interpreted to indicate that both Cretaceous and Cenozoic extensions were N–S to NE–SW directed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Context. Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are high-mass X-ray binaries with an X-ray luminosity above 1039 erg s−1. These ULXs can be powered by black holes that are more massive than 20 M⊙, accreting in a standard regime, or lighter compact objects accreting supercritically. There are only a few ULXs with known optical or ultraviolet (UV) counterparts, and their nature is debated. Determining whether optical/UV radiation is produced by the donor star or by the accretion disc is crucial for understanding ULX physics and testing massive binary evolution. Aims. We conduct, for the first time, a fully consistent multi-wavelength spectral analysis of a ULX and its circumstellar nebula. We aim to establish the donor star type and test the presence of strong disc winds in the prototypical ULX Holmberg II X-1 (Ho II X-1). Furthermore, we aim to obtain a realistic spectral energy distribution of the ionising source, which is needed for robust nebula analysis. We acquired new UV spectra of Ho II X-1 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and complemented them with archival optical and X-ray data. We explored the spectral energy distribution of the source and analysed the spectra using the stellar atmosphere code PoWR and the photoionisation code CLOUDY. Our analysis of the X-ray, UV, and optical spectra of Ho II X-1 and its nebula consistently explains the observations. We do not find traces of disc wind signatures in the UV and the optical, rejecting previous claims of the ULX being a supercritical accretor. The optical/UV counterpart of Ho II X-1 is explained by a B-type supergiant donor star. Thus, the observations are fully compatible with Ho II X-1 being a close binary consisting of an ≳66 M⊙ black hole accreting matter from an ≃22 M⊙ B-supergiant companion. Furthermore, we propose a possible evolution scenario for the system, suggesting that Ho II X-1 is a potential gravitational wave source progenitor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A moderately broad, neutral Fe emission line and four narrow absorption lines are also found. By investigating the pulse phase evolution, we derived the best-fitting orbital solution for the 2015 outburst. Comparing the updated ephemeris with those of the previous outbursts, we set a 3σ confidence level interval -6.6 × 10-13 s s-1 < Porb < 6.5 × 10-13 s s-1 on the orbital period derivative. Moreover, we investigated the pulse profile dependence on energy finding a peculiar behaviour of the pulse fractional amplitude and lags as a function of energy. We performed a phase-resolved spectroscopy showing that the blackbody component tracks remarkably well the pulse profile, indicating that this component resides at the neutron star surface (hotspot). The Accreting Millisecond X-ray Pulsar IGR J17591–2342 is a Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) system that went in outburst on 2018 August and it was monitored by the NICER observatory and partially by other facilities. We aim to study how the spectral emission of this source evolved during the outburst by exploiting the whole X-ray data repository of simultaneous observations. The continuum emission of the combined broad-band spectra is on average well described by an absorbed Comptonization component scattering blackbody-distributed photons peaking at (0.8 ± 0.5) keV by a moderately optically thick corona (τ = 2.3 ± 0.5) with temperature of (34 ± 9) keV. A blackbody component with temperature and radial size of (0.8 ± 0.2) keV and (3.3 ± 1.5) km, respectively, is required by some of the spectra and suggests that part of the central emission, possibly a fraction of the neutron star surface, is not efficiently scattered by the corona. The continuum at low energies is characterized by significant residuals suggesting the presence of an absorption edge of O  viii and of emission lines of Ne  ix ions. Moreover, broad Fe  i and Fe  xxv Kα emission lines are detected at different times of the outburst, suggesting the presence of reflection in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ATHENA is the L2 mission selected by ESA to pursue the science theme 'Hot and Energetic Universe.' One of the two focal plane instruments is the X-ray Integral Field Unit, an array of TES microcalorimeters operated at T $$<$$ 100 mK. To allow the X-ray photons focused by the telescope to reach the detector, windows have to be opened on the cryostat thermal shields. X-ray transparent filters need to be mounted on these open windows to attenuate the IR radiation from warm surfaces, to attenuate RF electromagnetic interferences on TES sensors and SQUID electronics, and to protect the detector from contamination. Broad emission features of abundant chemical elements, such as iron, are commonly seen in the X-ray spectra of accreting compact objects and their studies can provide useful information about the geometry of the accretion processes. In this work, we focus our attention on GX 3+1, a bright, persistent accreting low-mass X-ray binary, classified as an atoll source. Its spectrum is well described by an accretion disc plus a stable Comptonizing, optically thick corona which dominates the X-ray emission in the 0.3-20 keV energy band. In addition, four broad emission lines are found and we associate them with reflection of hard photons from the inner regions of the accretion disc, where Doppler and relativistic effects are important. We used self-consistent reflection models to fit the spectra of the 2010 XMM-Newton observation and the stacking of the whole data sets of 2010 INTEGRAL observations. We conclude that the spectra are consistent with reflection produced at ~10 gravitational radii by an accretion disc with an ionization parameter of ξ ~ 600 erg cm s-1 and viewed under an inclination angle of the system of ~35°. Furthermore, we detected for the first time for GX 3+1, the presence of a power-law component dominant at energies higher than 20 keV, possibly associated with an optically thin component of non-thermal electrons. It is thought that neutron stars in low-mass binary systems can accrete matter and angular momentum from the companion star and be spun-up to millisecond rotational periods. During the accretion stage, the system is called a low-mass X-ray binary, and bright X-ray emission is observed. When the rate of mass transfer decreases in the later evolutionary stages, these binaries host a radio millisecond pulsar whose emission is powered by the neutron star's rotating magnetic field. This evolutionary model is supported by the detection of millisecond X-ray pulsations from several accreting neutron stars and also by the evidence for a past accretion disc in a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar. It has been proposed that a rotation-powered pulsar may temporarily switch on during periods of low mass inflow in some such systems. Only indirect evidence for this transition has hitherto been observed. Here we report observations of accretion-powered, millisecond X-ray pulsations from a neutron star previously seen as a rotation-powered radio pulsar. Within a few days after a month-long X-ray outburst, radio pulses were again detected. This not only shows the evolutionary link between accretion and rotation-powered millisecond pulsars, but also that some systems can swing between the two states on very short timescales. ABSTRACT We report on the long-term monitoring campaign of the black hole candidate IGR J17091−3624 performed with INTEGRAL and Swift during the peculiar outburst started on 2011 January. We have studied the two-month spectral evolution of the source in detail. Unlike the previous outbursts, the initial transition from the hard to the soft state in 2011 was not followed by the standard spectral evolution expected for a transient black hole binary. IGR J17091−3624 showed pseudo-periodic flare-like events in the light curve, closely resembling those observed from GRS 1915+105. We find evidence that these phenomena are due to the same physical instability process ascribed to GRS 1915+105. Finally, we speculate that the faintness of IGR J17091−3624 could be not only due to the high distance of the source but also due to the high inclination angle of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic observations over the area of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) and the Ross Sea have been compiled into a digital database that furnishes a new regional scale view of the magnetic anomaly crustal field in this key sector of the Antarctic continent. This compilation is a component of the ongoing IAGA/SCAR Antarctic Digital Magnetic Anomaly Project (ADMAP). The aeromagnetic surveys total 115 000 line km, and are distributed across the Victoria Land sector of the TAM, the Ross Sea, and Marie Byrd Land. The magnetic campaigns were performed within the framework of the national and international Italian–German–US Antarctic research programs and conducted with differing specifications during nine field seasons from 1971 until 1997. Generally flight line spacing was less than 5 km while survey altitude varied from about 610 to 4000 m above sea level for barometric surveys and was equal to 305 m above topography for the single draped survey. Reprocessing included digitizing the old contour data, improved levelling by means of microlevelling in the frequency domain, and re-reduction to a common reference field based on the DGRF90 model. A multi-frequency grid procedure was then applied to obtain a coherent and merged total intensity magnetic anomaly map. The shaded relief map covers an area of approximately 380 000 km2. This new compilation provides a regional image of the location and spatial extent of the Cenozoic alkaline magmatism related to the TAM–Ross Sea rift, Jurassic tholeiites, and crustal segments of the Early Palaeozoic magmatic arc. A linear, approximately 100-km wide and 600-km long Jurassic rift-like structure is newly identified. Magnetic fabric in the Ross Sea rift often matches seismically imaged Cenozoic fault arrays. Major buried onshore pre-rift fault zones, likely inherited from the Ross Orogen, are also delineated. These faults may have been reactivated as strike-slip belts that segmented the TAM into various crustal blocks. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

THESEUS, one of the two space mission concepts being studied by ESA as candidates for next M5 mission within its Comsic Vision programme, aims at fully exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) to solve key questions about the early Universe, as well as becoming a cornerstone of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. By investigating the first billion years of the Universe through high-redshift GRBs, THESEUS will shed light on the main open issues in modern cosmology, such as the population of primordial low mass and luminosity galaxies, sources and evolution of cosmic re-ionization, SFR and metallicity evolution up to the "cosmic dawn" and across Pop-III stars. At the same time, the mission will provide a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics by enabling the identification, accurate localisation and study of electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational waves and neutrinos, which will be routinely detected in the late '20s and early '30s by the second and third generation Gravitational Wave (GW) interferometers and future neutrino detectors, as well as of all kinds of GRBs and most classes of other X/gamma-ray transient sources. Under all these respects, THESEUS will provide great synergies with future large observing facilities in the multi-messenger domain. A Guest Observer programme, comprising Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations, will expand the science return of the mission, to include, e.g., solar system minor bodies, exoplanets, and AGN. THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focussing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multiwavelegth studies. Here we present the THESEUS capabilities for studying the time variability of different classes of sources in parallel to, and without affecting, the gamma-ray bursts hunt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proposed THESEUS mission will vastly expand the capabilities to monitor the high-energy sky. It will specifically exploit large samples of gamma-ray bursts to probe the early universe back to the first generation of stars, and to advance multi-messenger astrophysics by detecting and localizing the counterparts of gravitational waves and cosmic neutrino sources. The combination and coordination of these activities with multi-wavelength, multi-messenger facilities expected to be operating in the 2030s will open new avenues of exploration in many areas of astrophysics, cosmology and fundamental physics, thus adding considerable strength to the overall scientific impact of THESEUS and these facilities. Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful transients in the Universe, over–shining for a few seconds all other γ-ray sky sources. Their emission is produced within narrowly collimated relativistic jets launched after the core–collapse of massive stars or the merger of compact binaries. THESEUS will open a new window for the use of GRBs as cosmological tools by securing a statistically significant sample of high-z GRBs, as well as by providing a large number of GRBs at low–intermediate redshifts extending the current samples to low luminosities. The wide energy band and unprecedented sensitivity of the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and X-Gamma rays Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) instruments provide us a new route to unveil the nature of the prompt emission. For the first time, a full characterisation of the prompt emission spectrum from 0.3 keV to 10 MeV with unprecedented large count statistics will be possible revealing the signatures of synchrotron emission. SXI spectra, extending down to 0.3 keV, will constrain the local metal absorption and, for the brightest events, the progenitors' ejecta composition. Investigation of the nature of the internal energy dissipation mechanisms will be obtained through the systematic study with XGIS of the sub-second variability unexplored so far over such a wide energy range. THESEUS will follow the spectral evolution of the prompt emission down to the soft X–ray band during the early steep decay and through the plateau phase with the unique ability of extending above 10 keV the spectral study of these early afterglow emission phases. Aims. Our aim is to quantify the impact of systematic effects on the inference of cosmological parameters from cosmic shear. Methods. We present an "end-to-end" approach that introduces sources of bias in a modelled weak lensing survey on a galaxy-by-galaxy level. We propagated residual biases through a pipeline from galaxy properties at one end to cosmic shear power spectra and cosmological parameter estimates at the other end. We did this to quantify how imperfect knowledge of the pipeline changes the maximum likelihood values of dark energy parameters. Results. We quantify the impact of an imperfect correction for charge transfer inefficiency and modelling uncertainties of the point spread function for Euclid, and find that the biases introduced can be corrected to acceptable levels.
