The mercury content in peat layers of seven peat bogs in the Małopolska region (Wolbrom in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and Otrębowskie Brzegi, Puścizna Wysoka, Puścizna Mała, Przybojec, Puścizna Długopole and Bór na Czerwonem in the Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin) was determined to a depth of 100 cm at a resolution of 1–2 cm. Geochemical background and level of anthropogenic mercury enrichment were determined for each peat bog. To establish the interdependence between mercury concentration, mineral matter content and selected metals, geochemical diagrams and models of the system were drawn up representing the correlational relationships between the selected geochemical variables for three of the peat bogs in the Orawa--Nowy Targ Basin (Otrębowskie Brzegi, Przybojec and Bór na Czerwonem). It was found that, comparing against other European raised bogs, the range of mercury concentrations in the peat layer down to 50 cm in the peatlands of Małopolska is similar to those in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Spain, and decidedly lower than in the peatlands in Scotland, Belgium and Czechia. Furthermore, the sites in the Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin were clearly lower, the lower the altitude of the peat bog surface, which is probably associated with local topoclimatic conditions. This comprehensive study examines fossil remains from Niedźwiedzia Cave in the Eastern Sudetes, offering detailed insights into the palaeobiology and adversities encountered by the Pleistocene cave bear Ursus spelaeus ingressus. Emphasising habitual cave use for hibernation and a primarily herbivorous diet, the findings attribute mortality to resource scarcity during hibernation and habitat fragmentation amid climate shifts. Taphonomic analysis indicates that the cave was extensively used by successive generations of bears, virtually unexposed to the impact of predators. The study also reveals that alkaline conditions developed in the cave during the post-depositional taphonomic processes. Mortality patterns, notably among juveniles, imply dwindling resources, indicative of environmental instability. Skeletal examination reveals a high incidence of forelimb fractures, indicating risks during activities like digging or confrontations. Palaeopathological evidence unveils vulnerabilities to tuberculosis, abscesses, rickets, and injuries, elucidating mobility challenges. The cave's silts exhibit a high zinc concentration, potentially derived from successive bear generations consuming zinc-rich plants. We use a range of environmental variables to explore the possible drivers influencing the biota, especially the composition of aquatic invertebrates, during the Younger Dryas (YD) and Early Holocene (EH) in different river valley sites: a well-developed meandering river and the confluence zone of headwater streams. Using pollen, macrofossil, cladoceran, and chironomid as well as geochemical and lithological data as proxies for environmental factors (i.e., water depth and temperature), we attempt to show that these different sites display similar hydroclimatic signals (especially floods). The geochemical records in the studied valley are correlated with environmental factors, such as the evolution of the vegetation, the intensification phase of slope processes, and fluvial activities. Cladocerans and chironomids potentially play important roles in the recognition of flood episodes in the study sites, and any shift in their diversity and, especially, the co-occurrence of planktonic, sediment-associated cladocerans with rheophilic chironomids could be valuable indicators of floods and flow episodes. The variable changes in water levels at the sites reconstructed by the cladoceran-based water-depth model were positively associated with changes in lithophilic elements (K, Na, Al, Mg, and Ti), SiO 2(biog + ter) and Fe/Mn, and our estimates of the paleohydraulic parameters for the study sites are generally consistent with changes in the composition of aquatic invertebrates. The recorded YD floods appear to be synchronous, regardless of the size and the different geological and geomorphological settings of each part of the river catchment. Our investigation demonstrates that flood magnitude increases in the downstream direction along the valley. The common increases in the water level at all study sites from the Grabia River valley are significant from 12,400 to 12,200 and from 11,900 to 11,800 cal BP and are comparable with those from elsewhere in Poland and Europe. Abstract: The developmental history, from the Oldest Dryas to the Late Holocene, of a paleolake and mire located in a river valley in Central Poland was studied using high-resolution records of pollen, macrofossils, Cladocera, sedimentology, and geochemistry from a 14 C dated sediment core. We inferred temperature and water level dynamics using cladocerans and palynological and geochemical methods were employed to investigate natural fluvial activity, particularly for these elements that are difficult to find through sedimentological methods. Our research demonstrates how climate fluctuation in the Late Glacial and Holocene periods influenced the development of a paleolake and mire in a small river valley and shows the importance of long-term research to establish hydroclimatic conditions in biogenic sediments. We propose that water level fluctuations were important in modifying biotic assemblages. The results of our multiproxy analysis clearly suggest that the main driver of changes in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as in geomorphological processes in the valley, was climate: reconstructed temperatures generally follow the known trends, showing an increase at the beginning of the Bølling, Allerød, and Holocene and a decrease at the beginning of the Oldest and Younger Dryas. Similarly, periods of water level increase are synchronous with climatic changes. However, the local environmental forces were a significant factors affecting biotic diversity in the studied time span. Fish predation, macrophyte structure, pH, and calcium content partly influence the results of the cladoceran-based water depth reconstruction in particular. Interestingly, the cladoceran-inferred summer temperature reconstruction for Pawłowa appear realistic. Although the temperature trends can be considered reliable, our results indicate the important role of local factors which control the species composition of the subfossil assemblages. The chemical composition of organic deposits from the site Koźmin Las are the basis of reconstruction of environment conditions of the Warta River valley at the end of the Alleröd and in the Younger Dryas. Environmental archives presented in this study, comprise organic matter content, mineral matter content, calcium carbonate content, reaction and macro- (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mn) and microelements (Cu, Zn and Pb). The sorption of metals by organic matter and hydrated iron oxides, clay minerals accumulation variability in depositional environment, water relations of the ecosystem and bioaccumulation of some elements are the factors determining the chemical composition of organic sediments in the Warta river valley. Abstract: The environmental conditions of the Szczecin Bay, which existed prior to Szczecin Lagoon, have been reconstructed on the basis of the stable carbon and oxygen isotope (18O and 13C) analysis and radiocarbon dates obtained for subfossil shells of Cerastoderma (Cardium) glaucum. The shells in the collected core were well preserved in their life positions, representing a geochemical record of past temperature variation over the middle Holocene. Three major periods with different thermal conditions have been distinguished in the interval ~6000–4300calyr BP, when the important Littorina regional transgression took place. During the first period, 6000–5250calyr BP, water temperature decreased by 1.4°C, and then remained constant over the second period (5250–4750calyr BP). In contrast, during the third period (4750–4300calyr BP) both δ-values were highly variable and the mean summer temperature (March–November) increased by about 3.5°C. During first two periods, δ18O and δ13C were significantly correlated, indicating stability of the environmental conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Analyses on 27 sediment cores taken from the bottom of the Szczecin Lagoon allowed environmental reconstruction of the postglacial main stages of basin development, based on detailed sedimentological, geochemical, diatomological and malacological studies of selected key cores. Studies revealed that during the Late Glacial and Holocene this area developed in several stages. In the Late Glacial the whole study area constituted a low alluvial plain. At the turn from Younger Dryas to Holocene the alluvial plain was cut through by the Odra river to a level of 10–11 m below sea level (b.s.l.). Along with the first phases of the Holocene marine transgression at the southern Baltic Sea''s coasts the accumulation of the limnic-swampy deposits began in this lower part of the Odra valley. At ca. 6–6.5 ka BP the transgression proceeded and Littorina Sea waters flooded the area. At that time the Szczecin Lagoon constituted a marine embayment in which series of sands, partly rich in malacofauna, was deposited. The development of the Swina barrier resulted in the isolation of the embayment from the direct inflow of Baltic Sea waters. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The study was aimed at elucidating relationships between lithological and geochemical characteristics of sediments as indicators of sea level changes during the Late Quaternary on the eastern slope of the Yinggehai-Song Hong basin. The focus was on sediments of the late Pleistocene paleodelta formed on the shelf off the Hainan Island. Examination of two cores revealed a significant lithological and geochemical variability of the sediments, particularly in the lower segments of the delta deposits, associated with the delta front (core LDW) and with the distal part of the prodelta (core ZBW). The upper segment of the deltaic sediments in core LDW most likely represents a delta plain formed under the prevalent trend of increasing sea level. On other hand the upper segment of the deltaic sediments in core ZBW should be regarded as associated with sediments of the proximal part of the prodelta, formed when the delta front was advancing and the sea level was first rising and then stabilised. Attention was paid to the relationship between lithological and geochemical features of the sediments and the seismic profiling records, particularly with respect to the paleodelta sediment series. The wooly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) and forest rhinoceros (Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis) were prominent representatives of the Middle and Late Pleistocene glacial and interglacial faunas of Eurasia. Their diet has traditionally been inferred on functional morphology of the dentition and skull. In rare cases, food remains are preserved in the fossas of the teeth or as gut content. New approaches to infer diet include the study of isotopes and mesowear. Here we apply all four methods to infer the diet of these emblematic rhinoceros' species and compare the food actually taken with the food available, as indicated by independent botanical data from the localities where the rhinoceros' fossils were found: Gorzów Wielkopolski (Eemian) and Starunia (Middle Vistulian) as well as analysis of literature data. We also made inferences on the season of death of these individuals. Our results indicate that the woolly rhino in both Europe and Asia (Siberia) was mainly a grazer, although at different times of the year and depending on the region its diet was also supplemented by leaves of shrubs and trees. According to the results of isotope studies, there were important individual variations. The data show a clear seasonal variation in the isotope composition of this rhino's diet. In contrast, Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis was a browser, though its diet included low-growing vegetation. Its habitat consisted of various types of forests, from riparian to deciduous and mixed forests, and open areas. The diet of this species consisted of selected items of vegetation, also including plants growing near both flowing and standing waters. The food remains from the fossae of the teeth indicated flexible browsing, confirming the previous interpretations based on functional morphology and stable isotopes. Long-term data from mesowear and microwear across a wider range of S. kirchbergensis fossils indicate a more mixed diet with a browsing component. The Ner River valley (central Poland) underwent substantial transformation during the Weichselian–Holocene transition as a result of fluvial processes and climate changes, resulting in the establishment of its present shape in the Holocene. A multiproxy study based on organic deposits from a palaeochannel fill (Lutomiersk–Koziówki) shows that after the channel was cut off during the late glacial termination, it became a shallow oxbow, fed by local springs. In the Boreal period, the oxbow lake was also fed by precipitation and became a telmatic environment overgrown by rush and swamp vegetation. Finally, it was covered by overbank deposits. The first flooding phase (9900–9600 cal. BP) was followed by the accumulation of overbank sediments (after 9500 cal. BP) and flooding increased after ca. 9300–9000 cal. BP. Pollen data provide information on the regional vegetation context for local and regional changes. In the Atlantic period, an increase in both summer and winter temperatures is inferred from the pollen data, corresponding to an expansion of thermophilous deciduous forests. While in general, flooding phases of the Early Holocene are poorly recognised in Eastern Europe, the Lutomiersk–Koziówki site may be considered as one of the reference points for this phenomenon in the region. The history of the Ner River valley is well documented in Kolonia Bechcice (NKB) palaeochannel sediments. It was cut-off from the riverbed in the Younger Dryas. Its history may be divided into five distinct phases. During the Younger Dryas, the NKB was a relatively deep, oligotrophic water body. From the onset of the Holocene, the lake became a eutrophic, overgrown pond which quickly palludified and transformed into a rich fen with ferns and birches. There is a hiatus in the middle of the Holocene fen stratigraphy. A peat sequence is covered by fluvial silt and sand deposits. The NKB sequence documents the Ner valley as a dynamic system during the Late Glacial and the Holocene. Local ecosystems of this oxbow have remained under a much stronger pressure of climate changes than palaeolakes and wetlands located on uplands in the Łodź region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The subject of the work is a reconstruction of environmental conditions in the Lower Oder River Valley in the early Middle Ages with use multi-proxy research. This was considered in terms of natural determinants of the development of hydrogenic habitats in the estuary section of a large lowland river, but at the beginning of a headland of natural morainic plateau known as Castle Hill in Szczecin. In a relatively small area, three different types of geochemical landscapes were distinguished that had specific functions in matter cycles, including the water cycle. The article mainly presents the results of geochemical studies for a series of biogenic deposits separated by a series of lacustrine sediments with a large admixture of mineral material. Foraminifera assemblages are powerful bioindicators of environmental change and were analyzed in a sediment core collected from the Marquesas Keys, located in the southwestern region of the Florida Keys. The composition and abundance of foraminifera tests within the top 85 cm of the sediment core, dated with 14C and 210Pb, revealed changes in foraminifera assemblages in 1990 CE, 1939 CE, and 1872 CE. Based on the ecological preferences of the dominant species, changes in salinity and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) cover may have influenced foraminifera species composition. These changes were likely caused by variation in precipitation patterns in the eastern Gulf of Mexico region associated with shifts in the major ocean-atmosphere teleconnections such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) along with tropical storms and hurricanes. Prolonged periods of the negative phases of these climate phenomena coincided with shifts in foraminifera assemblages. Despite a generally negative impact of the ocean-atmosphere teleconnections on the South Florida region, a well-developed epiphytic assemblage was recorded in the studied core. The assemblage was recorded in the uppermost part of the core and dated to the period between 1990 and 2010 CE. This paper presents a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Wilczków fen (central Poland). The fen developed in an inactive valley at the onset of the Holocene (~11 ka BP) and peat accumulation lasted until 5.7 ka BP. Multi-proxy reconstructions were made on the basis of palaeobotanical, cladoceran, chironomid, beetle and geochemical analyses. A Kohonen self-organizing map ( SOM, unsupervised artificial neural network) of the biotic sequence distinguished four stages of fen history. Stage X1 (11.0-10.7 ka BP) was relatively wet and cool. Organic matter started to accumulate but the habitat conditions remained unstable. Moss, sedge and fern communities then developed. Sedimentary changes reveal an intensive groundwater supply at that time. Numerous and diverse chironomid and cladoceran subfossils indicate nearly permanent aquatic conditions. During stage Y1 (10.6-9.2 ka BP) conditions were dry and the upper peat layer desiccated. Cladocera nearly disappeared whereas chironomids were represented by semi-terrestrial and predatory (Tanypodinae) species. Conditions started to be more reducing. All the remaining samples belonged to the interweaving stages X2 and Y2. Stage Y2 (mostly 9.1-7.3 and 6.0-5.7 ka BP) was also dry but humidity increased towards the top. Oxidizing conditions occurred and the pH became more alkaline, favouring Cladium mariscus. The basin received mostly allochthonous matter input at that time. Stage X2 (mostly 6.8-6.1 ka BP) was humid and warm. The groundwater supply remained low but there was an increase in precipitation, changing local conditions to ombrotrophic. Species-rich chironomid and cladoceran communities were associated with temporary pools. Finally, conditions returned to those characteristic of stage Y2. The presented reconstruction documents long-term abiotic and biotic changes determined by water supply, including groundwater outflow, which have rarely been detected at a multi-proxy scale. We show that inactivated valley fens are sensitive to climate-driven hydrological fluctuations. Kohonen neural networks appear to be a promising method for analysing variability in multi-proxy data.
