Introduction: Pathogen introduction and transmission at the farm, regional, or national level are associated with reduced animal welfare and negative impacts on herd economics. Ongoing infectious disease surveillance, active or passive, is therefore of high importance. For optimal resolution, each pig is sampled individually, for example by collecting blood or nasal swabs. In recent years, oral fluids have become very useful for population surveillance at the pen level. Another alternative is sampling the air to capture pathogens circulating across the entire barn via bioaerosols. Objective: This study aimed to examine the potential utility of bioaerosol metagenomics for pathogen detection on pig farms. Methods: Bioaerosols via automated air sampler, and oral fluid via pen-based ropes, were collected from each of two Scottish indoor pig farms. All samples were subjected to conventional routine bacterial isolation. Total genomic nucleic acids were extracted for PCR screening for three pig DNA viruses, three bacterial Mycoplasma species and an RNA virus. Illumina shotgun metagenomic sequencing was also conducted. Results: Oral fluids contained more DNA compared to bioaerosol samples. DNA integrity exhibited limited impact on PCR or sequence yield. While Streptococcus suis could be cultured from a single oral fluid sample, reads mapped to S. suis were detectable in all metagenomic samples. Other bacterial pig pathogens, including Mycoplasma hyorhinis, M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyosynoviae, were detected in oral fluid and aerosols by PCR and metagenomics. One of the two farms was PRRSV positive, and the virus was detectable via PCR in oral fluids but not in bioaerosols. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene profiles had less variation between bioaerosols and oral fluids. Some identified AMR genes had strikingly similar abundance overall. Conclusion: Overall, these findings indicate that there is potential utility of bioaerosol metagenomics for pathogen surveillance on pig farms; however, more research is needed for technical and cost optimization to allow for routine pathogen detection on livestock farms. This study investigates airborne bacterial and fungal communities in south-eastern Italy and Albania using advanced DNA-based techniques and compositional data analysis (CoDa). We assess the significance of airborne microbial communities, detailing our methodologies for site selection, sample collection, DNA extraction, and data analysis. Our results reveal distinct differences in microbial composition between the two regions, driven by local environmental factors. Specifically, Albanian samples showed higher abundances of bacterial species such as Rubellimicrobium roseum and Sphingomonas cynarae, while Italian samples were characterized by a prevalence of Truepera radiovictrix and Rubrobacter radiotolerans. In terms of fungi, Albanian sites exhibited greater abundance of Mycosphaerella tassiana, Aureobasidium pullulans, and Ascochyta herbicola. Aitchison distance-based dendrograms and principal component analysis (PCA) biplots, utilizing singular value decomposition, clearly delineated a geographical separation of microbial communities, underscoring the impact of regional atmospheric conditions on microbial composition. In the discussion, we interpret these findings in the context of regional environmental factors, highlighting their implications for understanding regional differences in airborne microbial communities. • In Beijing's super sandstorm 2021, 5700 amplicon sequence variants were detected. • Airborne bacteria in sandstorms were compared with the after-storm and haze days. • The sandstorm newly brought 10 pathogenic bacterial genera to the atmosphere. • Small bioaerosols (0.65–1.1 µm) were still suspended after the sandstorm subsided. Sandstorm, which injects generous newly emerging microbes into the atmosphere covering cities, adversely affects the air quality in built environments. However, few studies have examined the change of airborne bacteria during severe sandstorm events. In this work, we analyzed the airborne bacteria during one of the strongest sandstorms in East Asia on March 15th, 2021, which affected large areas of China and Mongolia. The characteristics of the sandstorm were compared with those of the subsequent clean and haze days. The composition of the bacterial community of air samples was investigated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing technology. During the sandstorm, the particulate matter (PM) concentration and bacterial richness were extremely high (PM 2.5 : 207 µg/m3; PM 10 : 1630 µg/m3; 5700 amplicon sequence variants/m3). In addition, the sandstorm brought 10 pathogenic bacterial genera to the atmosphere, posing a grave hazard to human health. As the sandstorm subsided, small bioaerosols (0.65–1.1 µm) with a similar bacterial community remained suspended in the atmosphere, bringing possible long-lasting health risks. Herein, we report a gel-confined phase separation strategy to rationally fabricate a fully bio-based filtration membrane (SGFM) using soluble soybean polysaccharide and gelatin. The versatile SGFM features fascinating honeycomb micro-nano architecture and hierarchical interconnected porous structures for microbial capture, and achieves a lower pressure drop, higher interception efficiency (99.3%), and superior microbial survivability than commercial gelatin filtration membranes. Particularly, the water-dissolvable SGFM can greatly simplify the elution and extraction process after bioaerosol sampling, thereby bringing about maximum sample transfer and vigorous recovery of collected microbes. Meanwhile, green capture coupled with ATP bioluminescence endows the SGFM with rapid and quantitative detection capability for airborne microbes. Microorganism pollutants can be bacteria, fungi and spores in the room. Microorganisms that are distributed in space are known as bioaerosols. The spread of bioaerosol in hospitals can result in danger to human health, especially for patients with weakened immune systems. Microbial bioaerosol media in the air are ambient air and indoor air. The routes of exposure can be through ingestion/swallowing, direct contact and inhalation/inhalation. The cause of hospital infections is because hospital environmental conditions do not meet the requirements, causing high levels of room air germs. Poor hospital indoor air quality can cause HAIs. Therefore increasing levels of mechanical or natural ventilation as well as regular cleaning and maintenance activities can play an important role in improving indoor air quality. AbstractThe human living environment serves as a habitat for microorganisms and the presence of ubiquitous airborne microbes significantly impacts the natural material cycle. Through ongoing experimentation with beneficial microorganisms, humans have greatly benefited from airborne microbes. However, airborne pathogens endanger human health and have the potential to induce fatal diseases. Tracking airborne microbes is a critical prerequisite for a better understanding of bioaerosols, harnessing their potential advantages, and mitigating associated risks. Although technological breakthroughs have enabled significant advancements in accurately monitoring airborne pathogens, many puzzles about these microbes remain unanswered due to their high variability and environmental diffusibility. Consequently, advanced techniques and strategies for special identification, early warning, and efficient eradication of microbial contamination are continuously being sought. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the research status of airborne microbes, concentrating on the recent advances and challenges in sampling, detection, and inactivation. Particularly, the fundamental design principles for the collection and timely detection of airborne pathogens are described in detail, as well as critical factors for eliminating microbial contamination and enhancing indoor air quality. Low-flow showerheads offer consumers economic and water-saving benefits, yet their use may inadvertently affect the microbial content of produced water and water-associated aerosols. This study aimed to compare the abundance and microbial composition of bacteria in shower water and associated respirable aerosols produced by various low flow rate (1, 1.5, and 1.8 gpm) showerheads. Our findings indicate that the lowest-flow showerhead produces water with lower total microbial and opportunistic bacterial pathogen densities compared to higher low flow rate counterparts. However, microbiome analysis revealed that 1.8 gpm flow rate showerheads exhibit reduced abundance of Gramnegative organisms and common biofilm-forming organisms, suggesting potentially lower pathogenicity compared to 1 and 1.5 gpm low-flow showerheads. Additionally, the number of respirable aerosols produced by showerheads as well as the partitioning of certain microorganisms from the water to aerosol phases was negatively correlated with flow rate, suggesting that there may be increasing exposure potential to pathogenic bioaerosols when using a 1gpm showerhead compared to a 1.8 gpm showerhead. However, the 1.5 gpm showerhead seemed to balance microbial partitioning, aerosol generation, and water conservation. Moreover, the microbial composition of aerosols produced from shower water was more influenced by the age of the showerhead than the flow rate, highlighting the significance of biofilm formation on the microbial community. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of evaluating the microbial risk associated with low-flow showerheads using multiple metrics in both water and aerosols, and dynamically assessing this over time, to ensure accurate future risk assessment. Horses stay in different types of stables; especially during the cold season, they stay inside for most of the day. A stable is also a place where many people spend quite a lot of time either as employees who care for and train horses or as equine enthusiasts. Keeping horses in stables causes their constant exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and molds in the air inside these facilities. The study was conducted in Udórz Stud Farm located in the southern region of Poland. It was carried out in two different types of stables: three runners and two box stables. The study continued for 2 years; samples were collected in each season of the year. The following devices were used: a six-stage Andersen-Graseby cascade impactor, the DustTrak™ II Aerosol Monitor 8530. The obtained results allowed for the conclusion that horses kept in box stables are exposed to lower concentrations of molds and yeasts than those kept in runners. Molds dominated in the stable air during humid periods—spring and autumn—while yeasts were more prominent during summer and winter. It was observed that cleaning stables reduces the morphotic elements of fungi in the air, even though it results in a higher level of particulate matter in the stable air. It should be noted that microclimate conditions were optimal for horses practically throughout the whole year. The aims of this study encompass the characterization of process parameters and the antimicrobial potential during operation of a novel non-thermal plasma (NTP) source in a duct system containing a particulate matter (PM) filter thus mimicking the interior of an air purifier. Simulating conditions of a long-term operation scenario, in which bacterial aerosols in indoor environments accumulate on PM filters, the filter surfaces were artificially inoculated with Escherichia coli (E. coli) and exposed to an air stream enriched with reactive species. Electrical power consumption, key plasma parameters, volume flow and air flow velocity, reactive gas species concentrations as well as inactivation rates of E. coli were assessed. The NTP operated at a gas temperature close to ambient air temperature and featured a mean electron energy of 9.4 eV and an electron density of 1∙1019 m−3. Ozone was found to be the dominating reactive gas species with concentrations of approx. 10 ppm in close vicinity to the PM filters. An inactivation rate of 99.96 % could be observed after exposure of the PM filters to the gas stream for 15 min. Speleotherapy is one of the non-pharmacological methods for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with chronic respiratory diseases, especially those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. On the one hand, one of the alleged main advantages of speleotherapeutic caves is the low microbial load in the air and the absence of other aeroallergens, but on the other hand, due to the lack of comprehensive air monitoring, there is little information on the pristine and human-influenced aerobiota in such environments. The aim of this study was to assess the anthropogenic effects of speleotherapy on the air microbiota and to investigate its potential impact on human health in Sežana Hospital Cave (Slovenia). From May 2020 to January 2023, air samples were collected in the cave before and after speleotherapeutic activities using two different volumetric air sampling methods—impaction and impingement—to isolate airborne microbiota. Along with sampling, environmental data were measured (CO2, humidity, wind, and temperature) to explore the anthropogenic effects on the aerobiota. While the presence of patients increased microbial concentrations by at least 83.3%, other parameters exhibited a lower impact or were attributed to seasonal changes. The structure and dynamics of the airborne microbiota are similar to those in show caves, indicating anthropization of the cave. Locally, concentrations of culturable microorganisms above 1000 CFU/m3 were detected, which could have negative or unpredictable effects on the autochthonous microbiota and possibly on human health. A mixture of bacteria and fungi typically associated with human microbiota was found in the air and identified by MALDI-TOF MS with a 90.9% identification success rate. Isolation of extracellular vesicles (EV) has been developing rapidly in parallel with the interest in EVs. However, commonly utilized protocols may not suit more challenging samplematrixes and could potentially yield suboptimal results. Knowing and assessing the pitfalls of isolation procedure to be used, should be involved to some extent for EV analytics. EVs in cow milk are of great interest due to their abundancy and large-scale availability as well as their cross-species bioavailability and possible use as drug carriers. However, the characteristics of milk EVs overlap with those of other milk components. This makes it difficult to isolate and study EVs individually. There exists also a lack of consensus for isolation methods. In this study, we demonstrated the differences between various differential centrifugation-based approaches for isolation of large quantities of EVs from cow milk. Samples were further purified with gradient centrifugation and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and differenceswere analyzed. Quality measurements were conducted onmultiple independent platforms. Particle analysis, electron microscopy and RNA analysis were used, to comprehensively characterize the isolated samples and to identify the limitations and possible sources of contamination in the EV isolation protocols. Vesicle concentration to protein ratio and RNA to protein ratios were observed to increase as samples were purified, suggesting co-isolation with major milk proteins in direct differential centrifugation protocols. We demonstrated a novel size assessment of vesicles using a particle mobility analyzer that matched the sizing using electron microscopy in contrast to commonly utilized nanoparticle tracking analysis. The airborne transmission of disease relies on the ability of microbes to survive aerosol transport and, subsequently, cause infection when interacting with a host. The length of time airborne microorganisms remain infectious in aerosol droplets is a function of numerous variables. We present measurements of mass and heat transfer from liquid aerosol droplets combined with airborne survival data for Escherichia coli MRE162, an ACDP category 1 microorganism used as a model system, under a wide range of environmental conditions, droplet compositions and microbiological conditions. In tandem, these companion measurements demonstrate the importance of understanding the complex relationship between aerosol microphysics and microbe survival. Specifically, our data consist of the correlation of a wide range of physicochemical properties (e.g., evaporation rates, equilibrium water content, droplet morphology, compositional changes in droplet solute and gas phase, etc.), with airborne viability decay to infer the impact of aerosol microphysics on airborne bacterial survival. Thus, a mechanistic approach to support prediction of the survival of microorganisms in the aerosol phase as a function of biological, microphysical, environmental, and experimental (aerosol-generation and sampling) processes is presented. Specific findings include the following: surfactants do not increase bacteria stability in aerosol, while both the bacteria growth phase and bacteria concentration may affect the rate at which bacteria decay in aerosol. A study was carried out in a waste sorting plant (WSP) located in France, treating dry recyclable household waste (DRHW) as well as dry recyclable commercial and industrial waste (DRCIW). Stationary and personal inhalable samples were collected in the WSP in order to investigate bioaerosols (sampling on a filter; 2 L/min and 10 L/min) and airborne dust (CIP; 10 L/min). The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the measurement of concentration, species composition, and particle size distribution contributes to a better assessment of the biological risks associated with exposure. The results confirmed that waste and waste sorting activities are sources of airborne fungi. Indeed, ambient concentrations ranged from 7.3 × 103 to 8.5 × 105 colony-forming units (CFU)/m3 for culturable fungi and up to 4 mg/m3 for dust. Personal exposure to inhalable dust was found up to 3 mg/m3 for dust and ranged from 8.6 × 103 to 1.5 × 106 CFU/m3 for fungi. Airborne fungal communities were found to be dominated by the Penicillium genera in both bioaerosols and settled dust samples, followed by the Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Wallemia, Mucor, and Rhizopus genera. Fungi were carried by particles of aerodynamic diameters, mainly between around 2.0 and 10.0 µm. The findings dealing with size distribution and biodiversity of bioaerosols suggest that employees are exposed to complex bioaerosols during their work and help to make a finer diagnosis of the risks involved, which is often difficult in the absence of any occupational exposure limit (OEL) value for bioaerosols in general. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific community has been galvanized to unravel the enigmatic role of bioaerosols in the transmission of infectious agents. This literature review, anchored in the extensive Web of Science Core Collection database covering the period from 1990 to 2023, utilizes a bibliometric approach to chart the dynamic landscape of bioaerosol research. It meticulously documents the paradigm shifts and burgeoning areas of inquiry that have emerged in the aftermath of the pandemic. This review meticulously maps out the sources and detection strategies of pathogens in a variety of ecosystems. It clearly shows that impaction and filtration sampling methods, followed by colony counting and PCR-based detection techniques, were predominantly used in the scientific works within the previous three decades. It synthesizes the progress and limitations inherent in a range of models for predicting aerosol-mediated pathogen spread and provides a comparative analysis of eDNA technology and traditional analytical techniques for bioaerosols. The accuracy of these detection methods and forecasting models is paramount for the early recognition of transmission risks, which, in turn, paves the way for prompt and effective disease mitigation strategies. By providing a thorough analysis of the historical progression and current state of bioaerosol research, this review illuminates the path ahead, identifying the critical research needs that will drive the field's advancement in the years to come. Healthcare personnels (HCPs) are at risk of respiratory infectious diseases during patient care activities. HCPs rely primarily on personal protective equipment to prevent pathogen exposures, but there is a need to develop alternative, or complementary control strategies, including engineering controls. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the 3 designs (denoted D 1A, D 1B, and D 2) of the University of Utah Containment Ventilation for Exposure Reduction (U-COVER), a protective barrier enclosure device to contain respirable aerosols when placed over a simulated patient. The 2 primary performance metrics were the percent reduction in: (i) the concentration of respirable aerosols in the simulated breathing zone of an HCP, and (ii) surface contamination outside the device, which were tested using salt aerosols and fluorescein aerosols, respectively. Briefly, salt or fluorescein aerosols were generated as though expelled by a prone patient under 3 conditions: (i) no device (control), (ii) with the device but without exhaust ventilation, and (iii) with the device with exhaust ventilation. Device D 2 was also tested under simulated use conditions, in which cardboard "arms" were placed inside the device ports. All 3 device designs showed the ability to reduce particle concentrations in the simulated HCP breathing zone and on surfaces by >99% with exhaust ventilation compared to the control condition. Without exhaust ventilation, device performance was lower and highly variable. Under simulated use conditions, device D 2 reduced particle concentrations in the simulated HCP breathing zone by ≥91% and on surfaces by >99% relative to control for all combinations of "arms" tested. Bioaerosols are airborne suspensions of fine solid or liquid particles containing biological substances such as viruses, bacteria, cellular debris, fungal spores, mycelium, and byproducts of microbial metabolism. The global Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the previous emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and influenza have increased the need for reliable and effective monitoring tools for bioaerosols. Bioaerosol collection and detection have aroused considerable attention. Current bioaerosol sampling and detection techniques suffer from long response time, low sensitivity, and high costs, and these drawbacks have forced the development of novel monitoring strategies. Microfluidic technique is considered a breakthrough for high performance analysis of bioaerosols. In recent years, several emerging methods based on microfluidics have been developed and reported for collection and detection of bioaerosols. The unique advantages of microfluidic technique have enabled the integration of bioaerosol collection and detection, which has a higher efficiency over conventional methods. This review focused on the research progress of bioaerosol collection and detection methods based on microfluidic techniques, with special attention on virus aerosols and bacterial aerosols. Different from the existing reviews, this work took a unique perspective of the targets to be collected and detected in bioaerosols, which would provide a direct index of bioaerosol categories readers may be interested in. We also discussed integrated microfluidic monitoring system for bioaerosols. Additionally, the application of bioaerosol detection in biomedicine was presented. This cross-sectional study aims to obtain knowledge about workers' exposure to airborne dust, bacterial and fungal species, endotoxin, biofilm formation, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in drilling waste treatment plants. In total, 408 full-shift personal samples, 66 work areas, 40 drilling waste, and reference (outdoor air and seawater) samples were analyzed. Some workers were exposed to high levels of endotoxin (207 EU/m3), bacteria (3.8 × 104 colony forming units (CFU)/m3 and 9.8 × 104 DNA copies/m3), or fungi (1.4 × 107 CFU/m3 and 3,600 copies/m3). The exposure levels to endotoxin, bacteria, and peaks of H2S were dependent on the treatment technique. All types of drilling waste contained large concentrations of bacteria compared to the seawater references. Elevated concentrations of airborne bacteria were found close to drilling waste basins. In total, 116, 146, and 112 different bacterial species were found in workers' exposure, work areas, and the drilling waste, respectively. An overlap in bacterial species found in the drilling waste and air (personal and work area) samples was found. Of the bacterial species found, 49 are classified as human pathogens such as Escherichia coli , Enterobacter cloacae , and Klebsiella oxytoca. In total, 44 fungal species were found in the working environment, and 6 of these are classified as human pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus. In conclusion, across the drilling waste treatment plants, human pathogens were present in the drilling waste, and workers' exposure was affected by the drilling waste treated at the plants with elevated exposure to endotoxin and bacteria. In a mass casualty medical evacuation after a bioaerosol (BA) dispersal event, a decontamination (DC) method is needed that can both decontaminate and prevent biological particle (BP) re-aerosolization (RA) of contaminated clothes. However, neither the efficacy of current DC methods nor the risk of BP RA is greatly explored in the existing literature. The goals of this study were to develop a repeatable method to quantify the RA of a biological contaminant off military uniform fabric swatches and to test the efficacy of one DC protocol (high-volume, low-pressure water) using 1 µm polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres as a surrogate. A four-step methodology was developed: contamination using a Collison Nebulizer; RA using a laboratory mixer and aerosol collection using an inhalable air sampler with a polyvinyl chloride filter; DC using a gravity-fed water shower; and quantification using ultraviolet microscopy via both visual and computer techniques. All results for uncontaminated control samples showed little to no presence of PSL sphere-like particles, while the contaminated experimental trials showed that RA was much lower after DC with water at the 99% confidence level (p-value = 0.0081). The water DC showed an average ∼73% reduction in particle RA, along with a change in air sampler filter deposition patterns from aerosol-like (before DC) to droplet-like (after DC). Legionella pneumophila are pathogenic bacteria that can be found in high concentrations in artificial water systems like evaporative cooling towers, which have been the source of frequent outbreaks in recent years. Since inhaled L. pneumophila can lead to Legionnaires' disease, the development of suitable sampling and rapid analysis strategies for these bacteria in aerosols is therefore of great relevance. In this work, different concentrations of viable L. pneumophila Sg 1 were nebulized and sampled by the cyclone sampler Coriolis® µ under defined conditions in a bioaerosol chamber. To quantify intact Legionella cells, the collected bioaerosols were subsequently analyzed by immunomagnetic separation coupled with flow cytometry (IMS-FCM) on the platform rqmicro.COUNT. For analytical comparison, measurements with qPCR and cultivation were performed. Limits of detection (LOD) of 2.9 × 103 intact cells m−3 for IMS-FCM and 7.8 × 102 intact cells m−3 for qPCR indicating a comparable sensitivity as in culture (LOD = 1.5 × 103 culturable cells m−3). Over a working range of 103 − 106 cells mL−1, the analysis of nebulized and collected aerosol samples with IMS-FCM and qPCR provides higher recovery rates and more consistent results than by cultivation. Overall, IMS-FCM is a suitable culture-independent method for quantification of L. pneumophila in bioaerosols and is promising for field application due to its simplicity in sample preparation. Objectives: Air pollutants in dentistry offices may cause problems for the health of staff and patients. Accordingly, the present study was performed to the assessment of bacterial bioaerosols and particulate matter (PM) characteristics in the indoor air of dentistry clinics. Methods: The sampling points were restoration, endodontics, and prosthesis wards. The PM specimens were taken using Grimm Dust Monitor and the microbial specimens were taken using QuickTake 30. Results: The maximum and minimum PM10 concentration across the different measure wards occurred as 70.31 and 30.32 μg/m3 in the Ketabchi Clinic restoration and its endodontics ward, respectively. The total number of bioaerosols was 2079. Gram‑positive Staphylococcus spp.(872), Gram‑positive Micrococcus spp.(706), and Gram‑negative Bacillus spp.(501) were present in the indoor air. The results showed a significant relationship for PM1 and PM2.5 in each sampling site. Conclusion: The low PM and bacterial bioaerosols contamination can be due to the coincidence with coronavirus pandemic, as during this period, health and hygienic protocols have been strictly observed. In a comparative study contrasting new and traditional clustering techniques, the capabilities of K-means, the hierarchal clustering algorithm (HCA), and GenieClust were examined. Both K-means and HCA demonstrated strong consistency in cluster profiles and sizes, emphasizing their effectiveness in differentiating particle types and confirming that the fundamental patterns within the data were captured reliably. An added dimension to the study was the integration of an autoencoder (AE). When coupled with K-means, the AE enhanced outlier detection, particularly in identifying compositional loadings of each cluster. Conversely, whilst the AE's application to all methods revealed a potential for noise reduction by removing infrequent, larger particles, in the case of HCA, this information distortion during the encoding process may have affected the clustering outcomes by reducing the number of observably distinct clusters. The findings from this study indicate that GenieClust, when applied both with and without an AE, was effective in delineating a notable number of distinct clusters. Furthermore, each cluster's compositional loadings exhibited greater internal variability, distinguishing up to 3× more particle types per cluster compared to traditional means, and thus underscoring the algorithms' ability to differentiate subtle data patterns. The work here postulates that the application of GenieClust both with and without an AE may provide important information through initial outlier detection and enriched speciation with an AE applied, evidenced by a greater number of distinct clusters within the main body of the data. Introduction Recycling of domestic waste and a number of employees in the recycling industry is expected to increase. This study aims to quantify current exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, and microorganisms and to identify determinants of exposure among recycling workers. Methods This cross-sectional study included 170 full-shift measurements from 88 production workers and 14 administrative workers from 12 recycling companies in Denmark. The companies recycle domestic waste (sorting, shredding, and extracting materials from waste). We collected inhalable dust with personal samplers that were analysed for endotoxin (n = 170) and microorganisms (n = 101). Exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, and microorganisms and potential determinants of exposure were explored by mixed-effects models. Results The production workers were 7-fold or higher exposed to inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi than the administrative workers. Among production workers recycling domestic waste, the geometric mean exposure level was 0.6 mg/m3 for inhalable dust, 10.7 endotoxin unit (EU)/m3 for endotoxin, 1.6 × 104 colony forming units (CFU)/m³ of bacteria, 4.4 × 104 CFU/m³ of fungi (25 °C), and 1.0 × 103 CFU/m³ of fungi (37 °C). Workers handling paper or cardboard had higher exposure levels than workers handling other waste fractions. The temperature did not affect exposure levels, although there was a tendency toward increased exposure to bacteria and fungi with higher temperatures. For inhalable dust and endotoxin, exposure levels during outdoor work were low compared to indoor work. For bacteria and fungi, indoor ventilation decreased exposure. The work task, waste fraction, temperature, location, mechanical ventilation, and the company size explained around half of the variance of levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi. Conclusion The production workers of the Danish recycling industry participating in this study had higher exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi than the administrative workers. Exposure levels of inhalable dust and endotoxin among recycling workers in Denmark were generally below established or suggested occupational exposure limits (OEL). However, 43% to 58% of the individual measurements of bacteria and fungi were above the suggested OEL. The waste fraction was the most influential determinant for exposure, and the highest exposure levels were seen during handling paper or cardboard. Pathogenic microbes with antibiotic resistance can thrive on municipal solid waste as nutrients and be aerosolized and transported to vicinities during waste disposal processes. However, the characterization of pathogenic bioaerosols and assessment of their exposure risks are lacking. Herein, particle size, concentration, activity, antibiotic resistance, and pathogenicity of airborne microorganisms were assessed in different sectors of a typical landfill. Results showed that active sector in downwind direction has the highest bioaerosol level (1234 CFU/m3), while residential area has the highest activity (14.82 mg/L). Botanical deodorizer from mist cannon can effectively remove bioaerosol. Most bioaerosols can be inhaled into respiratory system till bronchi with sizes ranging from 2.1−3.3 and 3.3−4.7 µm. Pathogenic bacteria (Bacilli, Bacillus , and Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia) and allergenic fungi (Aspergillus, Cladosporium , and Curvularia) prevailed in landfill. Although high abundance of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) producing bioaerosols were detected, these mVOCs contributed little to odor issues in landfill. Notably, surrounding areas have higher levels of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) than inner landfill with tetC, acrB, acrF, mdtF, and bacA as dominant ones. Most ARGs were significantly correlated with bacterial community, while environmental parameters mainly influenced fungal prevalence. The properties of bioaerosols are complex and diverse, and have a direct impact on the environment, climate, and human health. The effective identification of bioaerosols in the atmosphere is very significant with regard to accurately obtaining the atmospheric chemical characteristics of bioaerosols. To improve the detection of large particle bioaerosol and non-bioaerosol interference in the process of bioaerosol recognition, this study detected a variety of bioaerosols and abiotic aerosols based on a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). Furthermore, the bioaerosol particle identification and classification algorithm based on Zawadowicz the ratio of phosphate to organic nitrogen is optimized to distinguish bioaerosols from abiotic aerosols. The influence of ionized laser energy on classification methods is thoroughly explored here. The results show that 15 kinds of pure fungal aerosols were detected by SPAMS based on a wide size range sampling system, and that fungal aerosols with a particle size of up to 10 μm can be detected. Through the mass spectra peak ratio method of PO3−/PO2− and CNO−/CN−, when discriminating abiotic aerosols such as disruptive biomass combustion particles, automobile exhaust, and dust from pure bacterial aerosols, the discrimination degree is up to 97.7%. The optimized ratio detection method of phosphate to organic nitrogen has strong specificity, which can serve as the discriminant basis for identifying bioaerosols in SPAMS analytical processes. This study aimed to measure the levels of airborne radon Rn and bioaerosols – culturable airborne bacteria (CAB) and culturable airborne fungi (CAF)—in South Korea's residential environments, considering living conditions such as the number of ventilations, number of windows, floors, temperature, and relative humidity.. The range of Rn levels was 0.43–7.439 pCi/L with a median of 0.70 pCi/L. The CAB levels were 239–488 colony-forming unit (CFU)/m3 with a median of 309 CFU/m3, and CAF levels were 174–366 CFU/m3 with a median of 233 CFU/m3. Thus, this study found that semi-basement residential indoor environments negatively affected Rn and bioaerosol levels, and living in such residences resulted in high health condition scores on the bad side. This study aimed to assess the markers of chemical and microbiological contamination of the air at sport centers (e.g., the fitness center in Poland) including the determination of particulate matter, CO2, formaldehyde (DustTrak™ DRX Aerosol Monitor; Multi-functional Air Quality Detector), volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration (headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry), the number of microorganisms in the air (culture methods), and microbial biodiversity (high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina platform). Additionally the number of microorganisms and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (PCR) on the surfaces was determined. Total particle concentration varied between 0.0445 mg m−3 and 0.0841 mg m−3 with the dominance (99.65–99.99%) of the PM2.5 fraction. The CO2 concentration ranged from 800 ppm to 2198 ppm, while the formaldehyde concentration was from 0.005 mg/m3 to 0.049 mg m−3. A total of 84 VOCs were identified in the air collected from the gym. Phenol, D-limonene, toluene, and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol dominated in the air at the tested facilities. The average daily number of bacteria was 7.17 × 102 CFU m−3–1.68 × 103 CFU m−3, while the number of fungi was 3.03 × 103 CFU m−3–7.34 × 103 CFU m−3. In total, 422 genera of bacteria and 408 genera of fungi representing 21 and 11 phyla, respectively, were detected in the gym. The most abundant bacteria and fungi (>1%) that belonged to the second and third groups of health hazards were: Escherichia-Shigella, Corynebacterium, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. In addition, other species that may be allergenic (Epicoccum) or infectious (Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas, Sporobolomyces) were present in the air. Moreover, the SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected on surfaces in the gym. The article presents the history of the development and the current state of the apparatus for the detection of interferents and biological warfare simulants in the air with the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method. The LIF method is the most sensitive spectroscopic method and also enables the measurement of single particles of biological aerosols and their concentration in the air. The overview covers both the on-site measuring instruments and remote methods. The spectral characteristics of the biological agents, steady-state spectra, excitation–emission matrices, and their fluorescence lifetimes are presented. Diurnal variations in the concentrations of culturable fungal and bacterial bioaerosols were measured during winter and spring. Significant variations in concentrations of bacterial bioaerosols were observed during the day in this measurement campaign. The bacterial bioaerosol concentration exhibited two peaks during the morning and evening periods in the winter season. Diurnal variation in bacterial bioaerosols was greater in spring than that in winter. However, fungal bioaerosol concentrations were not affected by diurnal and seasonal changes. Environmental properties such as temperature, relative humidity, and ultraviolet irradiation intensity were measured, and their relationship with bioaerosol concentrations was analyzed. The surrounding temperature was suspected as a significant factor. This diurnal variation in culturable bioaerosols can explain various public health phenomena. The relationship between the concentration of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter = 10 µm (PM10), meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity, UV index, and wind speed), and the concentration of total fungal spores in the outdoor air of Plaza San Martin in Lima was studied. The sampling of fungal spores was performed using a single-stage Andersen-type volumetric impact equipment; PM10 values were provided by the Mobile Station of La Colmena (PROTRANSPORTE - Municipality of Lima). The results show that the concentrations of PM10 were highest in the months of March and April, which coincide with the highest concentrations of total spores, and continuously decreased to a minimum in the months of June and July. PM10 concentration showed a strong positive correlation with total spore concentration. Regarding the influence of meteorological variables on the concentration of PM10, a non-significant positive correlation was found with wind speed (r = 0.727). Air temperature and UV index presented a positive correlation with a significance level p < 0.001. Concerning relative humidity (RH), PM10 presented a negative correlation with a significance level p < 0.05. Aerobiological monitoring is a crucial tool for human and environmental health. Real-time bioaerosol samplers are major innovative techniques for aerobiological monitoring. In this study, we evaluate the use of a real-time bioaerosol sampler to monitor the exposure in an indoor occupational environment. We used a WIBS-NEO sampler, continuously operating during working and non-working days. The fluorescent particles were 16.5% of the total, identifiable as bioparticles. There was a significant difference between working and non-working days regarding bioparticles (+19% on average), especially in the morning (+91% on average), the part of the day mostly associated to worker presence. In working days, there is a difference between working and non-working-hours, reinforced by a strong correlation between the time of occupation of the room and the number of particles identified as pollen and fungal spores (R2 = 0.741, p < 0.01). The bacterial component does not seem to be influenced by the presence of workers; however, it follows the general distribution of bioparticles. Our results indicate the reliability of the real-time instrument for the monitoring of different biocomponents, and the role of workers in the distribution of some types of bioaerosol particles, like pollen and fungal spores, which can have several health impacts, such as allergies. The aim of this study was to assess bacterial aerosols in a herbal processing plant in Poland. Bioaerosol measurements of indoor and outdoor air of the herbal processing plant were performed in four measurement rounds, in a seasonal cycle—in spring, summer, autumn, and winter—using a six-stage Andersen's cascade air sampler. At each measuring point, during the bioaerosol sampling, the values of relative humidity and air temperature were simultaneously measured using the Kestrel 4000 device, and the concentration of particulate matter (fractions 1.0 μm, 2.5 μm, 4.0 µm, and 10.0 µm) using a DustTrak II dust analyzer. The results showed that the production process affects the bacterial aerosol concentrations in the tested plant. There were statistically significant differences in the concentrations of bacterial aerosol between indoor and outdoor air, and between production rooms, taking into account the seasons of the year. The concentrations of bacterial aerosol in the production rooms did not exceed 7.6 ×·103 cfu·m−3 and were lower than the permissible concentration values proposed for production rooms contaminated with organic dust. The calculations showed a significant correlation between the concentration of bacterial aerosol and air temperature. Qualitative analysis of microorganisms isolated from the air of production rooms showed the dominance of Gram-positive cocci of the genus Micrococcus and spore-forming rods of the Bacillus genus. Aim: To explore the health risk of living near permitted composting sites (PCSs) on disease severity in children and adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) across the UK. Methods: A semi-individual cross-sectional study was used to examine the risk of disease severity in people with CF (pwCF) within and beyond 4 km of PCSs in the UK in 2016. All pwCF registered in the UK CF Registry were eligible for this study. Linear and Poisson regressions, adjusted for age, gender, genotype, BMI, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and deprivation, were used to quantify associations between distance to a PCS and percent predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (ppFEV1), pulmonary exacerbations (#IVdays), and fungal and bacterial infections. Results: The mean age of the 9,361 pwCF (3,931 children and 5,430 adults) studied was 20.1 (SD = 14.1) years; 53.3% were male; and 49.2% were homozygous F508del. Over 10% of pwCF (n = 1,015) lived within 4 km of a PCS. We found no statistically significant difference in ppFEV1 and #IVdays/year in children. However, in adults, ppFEV1 was -1.07% lower (95% confidence interval (CI): -2.29%, 0.16%) and #IVdays/year were 1.02 day higher (95%CI: 1.01, 1.04) within 4 km of a PCS. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in mean ppFEV1 in CF adults with Aspergillus fumigatus (58.2.% vs 62.0%, p = 0.005) and Candida spp. (56.9% vs 59.9%, p = 0.029) residing within 4 km of a PCS. No associations were identified for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, P. aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusions: This novel national study provides evidence that adults with CF living near a PCS may experience small reductions in lung function, an increased risk of pulmonary exacerbations, and more frequent fungal infections. If confirmed by studies using refined exposure assessment methods accounting for bioaerosol dispersion, these results could have important implications for the living environment of pwCF. Bursting bubbles are one of the most common mechanisms in aerosols' formation from natural and artificial waterbodies. The presence of microbial materials in the liquid could cause their aerosolization and generation of bioaerosols. The process depends on a number of parameters of the gas and liquid involved. This project investigated the influence of the air flow, bubble size, the temperature of the liquid and its surface tension on the efficiency of bioaerosol generation. It was found that the bioaerosol is more efficiently produced at higher air flow rates and smaller bubble size. The influence of the liquid temperature was also identified to be quite high, reaching an order of magnitude of the bioaerosol concentration over the temperature range from 4 °C to 38 °C. The addition of surfactants did suppress the foam formation, which was found to have a negative effect on the process; the rate of the bioaerosol generation increased with the increase in the antifoam concentration. Conventional cages for laying hens will be banned in Canada as of 2036, and the egg industry is transitioning toward enriched colony housing and aviaries. While higher concentrations of particulate matter have been previously reported in aviaries and other cage-free housing systems, concentrations of total bacteria and archaea suspended in the air are still uncharacterized in Canadian enriched colonies and aviaries. The aim of the present study was to conduct a longitudinal survey of airborne total bacteria and of airborne total archaea in twelve enriched colonies and twelve aviaries in Eastern Canada during a whole laying period. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons was used to reveal and compare bacterial diversity at the start and the end of the production cycle, and during the cold and the warm seasons. Total bacterial and archaeal concentrations were significantly higher in aviaries (p < 0.05) versus enriched colonies, and in the cold season for both housing types (p < 0.05). While flock age did not have a significant effect on total bacterial and archaeal concentrations, it did on bacterial diversity in both enriched colony houses and aviaries (p < 0.05). Lampenflora, such as phototrophic microorganisms, multiply on speleothem surfaces under the show-cave lighting, causing deterioration of the natural and cultural heritages of the caves. Speleothems change color from white to green through microbial photosynthesis and are destroyed by microbial metabolisms. Aerosol transmission are suspected to disperses photosynthetic microorganisms. However, the mechanism underlying the process remains unclear, because the complexity of air ventilation affects the cave atmosphere. In the present study, we collected aerosol samples from the Akiyoshido Cave, which is a special natural monument in Japan and possesses various types of speleothems, to analyze microbial concentrations and communities in the cave atmosphere. Under a fluorescence microscope, phototrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms were observed in the aerosols with in the cave. The aerosol concentrations showed seasonal changes depending on air-flow variations in cave ventilation. High-throughput DNA sequencing targeting 16S rRNA genes revealed that the airborne bacterial communities inside the cave were dominated by members of the phyla Actinomycetota, Bacillota, and Pseudomonadota, originating from the external terrestrial, phyllosphere or freshwater environments, as well as its interior (guano). Cyanobacteria showed small relative abundances (from 1.0 to 10%) randomly in the aerosol samples at several locations in the cave, suggesting that the lampenflora-derived cyanobacteria were dispersed throughout the cave by the ventilation. Additionally, phototrophic microorganisms closely related to the relatives of the genera Leptolyngbya , Calothrix , and Chroococcidiopsis from the phylum Cyanobacteria were isolated from the aerosol samples. These results confirm that Cyanobacteria are one of the candidate microorganisms responsible for lampenflora dispersion and are "alive and airborne" in caves. Livestock farms are hotspots of antibiotic resistance due to the intensive use of antibiotics, in which the characteristics of air-borne and feces-borne antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial communities are of great significance. This study delves into the distribution of ARGs and microbial communities across various livestock farms in China, and the correlation of microorganisms between livestock farms and other global environments was investigated. The concentrations of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in air samples were basically at the same level, but those in fecal samples collected from chicken farms were universally higher than those in pig and cattle farms. There was significant ability of ARGs to spread easily among different bacteria in all samples in livestock farms. Additionally, there may be more possible host bacteria of airborne ARGs in chicken farms. In the global-scale analysis of highly similar microbial communities, the database matching with the highest number of similarities to microbial communities collected from livestock farms is genes related to human sources (54.8%). The pig farming industry in China has undergone a transformation, shifting from the traditional decentralized breeding model to the current intensive farming model. The characteristics of large-scale, intensive and high-density pig farming impose even stricter requirements on ventilation, which not only enable a suitable thermal environment for pigs, but also efficiently and effectively remove pollutants and prevent cross-infection. Due to the inherent disadvantages of traditional tunnel ventilation such as uneven indoor temperature, low air-cooling effect and cumulative effect of pollutants, an individual ventilation system referred to as targeted ventilation was proposed and numerically investigated in this study. The farrowing pen volume-averaged temperature, relative humidity and air velocity were applied to assess the thermal environment based on the recently developed Equivalent Temperature Index for Sows (ETIS). Moreover, the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) was used to simulate the indoor dynamic bioaerosol dispersion and deposition. Based on the results from this study, it was demonstrated that under the targeted ventilation the upstream flow and bioaerosols had limited impacts on the downstream pens, indicating a better micro-environment for the pigs from both environmental uniformity and bio-security perspectives. Furthermore, under the same thermal comfort of ETIS, the targeted ventilation rate could be reduced up to 77.9 % compared with that of tunnel ventilation, considerably saving air supply load and the related energy consumption. This study provides new insights into the advantages of individual ventilation on improving thermal environments, minimizing airborne cross-infection and increasing ventilation efficacy in farrowing houses, thus contributing to achieving safe and sustainable production in pig farming. This study focuses on the precise online extraction of bioaerosol content and accurate classification of multi-class suspended aerosols in the atmospheric environment. The polarization state is sensitive to the physical properties of micro-particles, such as size and shape. Fluorescence is a measurement method suitable for the identification of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other bioaerosols. If the micro-physical characteristics of some bioaerosols are similar to different kinds of non-biological aerosols, polarization detection assisted with fluorescence analysis can increase the extracted information related to aerosol molecular features, effectively enhancing the identification of biological particles. This paper combines multi-angle polarization vector detection and fluorescence analysis to propose a dual-modal aerosol online optical analysis system. An optical signal processing mechanism based on a support vector machine (SVM) has also been established to identify multi-class suspended aerosols, especially the biological components, accurately. The validity and recognition accuracy of the online aerosol optical analysis using two-modal techniques are confirmed by experimental results. The study of biological samples also shows that the detected aerosols' in situ characteristics and active status can be extracted from microscopic size, morphological structure and molecular properties by combining polarization scattering and fluorescence signals. The results of the study on the characteristics of the viable (culturable) and total bacterial particles in the ambient air in Gliwice, Poland, are presented. The concentration of viable bacteria in the air ranged from 57 CFU m−3 (Colony Forming Units per cubic meter) during winter to 305 CFU m−3 in spring, while the concentration of all bacteria (live and dead) in the air, measured in selected days, ranged from 298 cells m−3 in winter to over 25 thousand per m3 in autumn. A field study was also carried out to find out the level of the sterilization rate (k) for airborne bacteria. The obtained value of k for viable bacteria exposed to UV solar radiation in Gliwice was approximately 10 cm2 W−1s−1. The patterns of the size distributions of viable bacteria found in three seasons, spring, summer, and autumn, were similar, showing a peak in the range of 3.3–4.7 µm. In the winter season, the main peak was shifted into the smaller particles with an aerodynamic diameter ranging from 2.1 to 4.7 µm. The dominant group of culturable bacteria within the studied period was Gram-positive rods-forming endospores (34–55%), while the least frequent were Gram-negative rods (2%). Airborne concentrations of organic dust on animal farms are known to be very high. This dust is partly composed of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and their components [endotoxins, (1→3)- β - d -glucans, mould allergens, mycotoxins], recognised as being responsible for numerous health effects. Several cross-sectional studies have measured levels of airborne bacteria, fungi and endotoxins on pig farms. However, the temporal dynamics of organic dust's components throughout the year have rarely been assessed, and airborne concentrations of (1→3)- β - d -glucans and mould allergens remain poorly understood in these work environments. This longitudinal, four-season study measured cultivable fungi, endotoxins, (1→3)- β - d -glucans, Aspergillus versicolor (AveX) , Aspergillus fumigatus (Asp f1) and Alternaria sp (Alt a1) allergens on 31 pig farms in Switzerland. Results showed that exposure to AveX occurred in all four seasons. Total mean airborne concentration of endotoxins were between 3 and 4 times higher than the Swiss recommended limit value of 1000 EU m-3 and mean airborne concentrations of fungi were between 30 and 50 times higher than the Swiss recommended limit value of 1000 cfu m-3. Finally, accumulations of faecal matter on floors, humidity and dusty pathways were associated with increased concentrations of (1→3)- β - d -glucans. Respiratory pathogens can be spread though the transmission of aerosolised expiratory secretions in the form of droplets or particulates. Understanding the fundamental aerosol parameters that govern how such pathogens survive whilst airborne is essential to understanding and developing methods of restricting their dissemination. Pathogen viability measurements made using Controlled Electrodynamic Levitation and Extraction of Bioaerosol onto Substrate (CELEBS) in tandem with a comparative kinetics electrodynamic balance (CKEDB) measurements allow for a direct comparison between viral viability and evaporation kinetics of the aerosol with a time resolution of seconds. Here, we report the airborne survival of mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and determine a comparable loss of infectivity in the aerosol phase to our previous observations of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Through the addition of clinically relevant concentrations of mucin to the bioaerosol, there is a transient mitigation of the loss of viral infectivity at 40% RH. Increased concentrations of mucin promoted heterogenous phase change during aerosol evaporation, characterised as the formation of inclusions within the host droplet. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of environmental factors including disinfection on airborne microbiome during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, we evaluated indoor and outdoor air collected from 19 classrooms regularly disinfected. Extracted bacterial and fungal DNA samples were sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq™ platform. Using bacterial DNA copy number concentrations from qPCR analysis, multiple linear regressions including environmental factors as predictors were performed. Microbial diversity and community composition were evaluated. Classrooms disinfected with spray ≤1 week before sampling had lower bacterial DNA concentration (3116 DNA copies/m3) than those >1 week (5003 copies/m3) (p‐values = 0.06). The bacterial DNA copy number concentration increased with temperature and was higher in classrooms in coastal than inland cities (p‐values <0.01). Bacterial diversity in outdoor air was higher in coastal than inland cities while outdoor fungal diversity was higher in inland than coastal cities. These outdoor microbiomes affected classroom microbial diversity but bacterial community composition at the genus level in occupied classrooms were similar between coastal and inland cities. Our findings emphasize that environmental conditions including disinfection, climate, and school location are important factors in shaping classroom microbiota. Evaporative cooling is an energy efficient form of air conditioning in dry climates that functions by pulling hot, dry outdoor air across a wet evaporative pad. While evaporative coolers can help save energy, they also have the potential to influence human health. Studies have shown residential evaporative coolers may pull outdoor air pollutants into the home or contribute to elevated levels of indoor bioaerosols that may be harmful to health. There is also evidence that evaporative coolers can enable a diverse microbial environment that may confer early‐life immunological protection against the development of allergies and asthma or exacerbate these same hypersensitivities. This review summarizes the current knowledge of bioaerosol and microbiological studies associated with evaporative coolers, focusing on harmful and potentially helpful outcomes from their use. We evaluate the effects of evaporative coolers on indoor bacterial endotoxins, fungal β‐(1 → 3)‐D‐glucans, dust mite antigens, residential microbial communities, and Legionella pneumophila. To our knowledge, this is the first review to summarize and evaluate studies on the influence that evaporative coolers have on the bioaerosol and microbiological profile of homes. This review emphasizes the importance of classification of surface reservoirs represented by building and indoor materials. Models developed in the past 45 years to study mainly non-reactive thermodynamic partitioning of air pollutants to surfaces as well as their validation through analytical measurements are discussed. Analytical techniques aiming at surface characterization have been summarized. Applications relevant to surface chemistry performed indoors in the last decade are also given. Finally, techniques for microbiological sampling to characterize the hygienic state of surfaces have also been compiled. Readers will be introduced to the state-of-the-art of analytical techniques that are being used indoors for (physico)chemical and microbiological characterization of surfaces. The focus is on real-time in situ instrumentation used to understand chemical processes rather than air quality monitoring indoors. Embalmers are exposed to many pathogens present in bodily fluids. However, the risk posed by these pathogens has yet to be defined in terms of the nature of the hazard and the intensity of the exposure. The objective of this project was to monitor the exposure of embalmers to biological particles in real time and to characterize the microbiota found in the air during embalming activities in three thanatopraxy laboratories. An innovative approach, using a laser-induced fluorescence aerosol spectrometer (WIBS-NEO), made it possible to measure the concentrations and particle size distributions of the aerosols (biological and non-biological) emitted during embalming. At the same time, an Andersen impactor was used to sample the culturable microbiota present in the air and perform its characterization. The preferential aerosolization of the biological (fluorescent) fraction during embalming procedures, which was compared to the non-biological (non-fluorescent) fraction, showed that most of the tasks performed by the embalmer are likely to lead to microbial exposure via bioaerosols. The concentrations measured represented the equivalent of 2000 to 10,000 biological particles inhaled per minute. Although Mycobacterium tuberculosis was not identified in the air during this study, the presence of Streptococcus pneumoniae in some of the samples demonstrated that if a pathogen is present in the lungs of the deceased it can be aerosolized and inhaled by the embalmers. The size distribution showed that embalmers are exposed to a high proportion of small particles in the aerosols produced during their work. Thus, the respirable/total ratios calculated are between 58% and 78%. Finally, the detection of airborne Enterobacter, Serratia, Leclercia, and Hafnia tended to demonstrate the aerosolization of intestinal bacteria and their possible inhalation or ingestion. Due to the difficulty of identifying the presence of pathogenic agents before embalming, the presence of faecal bacteria in the air, the proximity of the embalmer to the body, and the limitations associated with the dilution of contaminants by general ventilation in the near field, local ventilation must be provided. Bioaerosols often contain human pathogens and allergens affecting public health. However, relatively little attention has been given to bioaerosols compared with non-biological aerosols. In this study, we aimed to identify bioaerosol compositions in Manchester, UK by applying high throughput sequencing methods and to find potential sources. Samples were collected at Manchester Air Quality Super Site at the Firs Environmental Research Station in November 2019 and in February 2020. Total DNA has been extracted and sequenced targeting the 16S rRNA gene of prokaryotes, ITS region of fungal DNA and 18S rRNA gene of eukaryotes. We found marine environment-associated bacteria and archaea were relatively more abundant in the February 2020 samples compared with the November 2019 samples, consistent with the North West marine origin based on wind back-trajectory analysis. In contrast, an OTU belonging to Methylobacterium, which includes many species resistant to heavy metals, was relatively more abundant in November 2019 when there were higher metal concentrations. Fungal taxa that fruit all year were relatively more abundant in the February 2020 samples while autumn fruiting species generally had higher relative abundance in the November 2019 samples. There were higher relative abundances of land plants and algae in the February 2020 samples based on 18S rRNA gene sequencing. One of the OTUs belonging to the coniferous yew genus Taxus was more abundant in the February 2020 samples agreeing with the usual pollen season of yews in the UK which is from mid-January until late April. The present study focuses on fabrication of nanofibrous membrane to filter microbial aerosols using silver nanoparticles. Nanofibrous membrane was formed with silver nanoparticles (AgNp) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) using electro spinning technology. The optimized nanofibers were characterized for the effective formation, morphology, and thermal sensitivity using High Resolution Scanning Electron microscopy (HR-SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Thermo gravimetric study (TGA). Chemical components present in the aqueous leaf extract that reduces the monovalent silver were identified using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. HR-SEM analysis confirmed homogenous fiber diameter with smooth surface for the obtained AgNPs-PVB membranes. The PVB loaded AgNPs have shown up to 19% weight loss at 956°C which was ascertained through TGA. Microbial loading on the filter, microbial survival, filtration efficiency, and antimicrobial efficiency of the fabricated membrane were evaluated. The fabricated membrane exhibited both bacterial and fungal filtration efficiency to an extent of 98.81% and 98.85%, respectively. In this study, a three-stage bio-aerosol sampler with a sampling flow rate of 170 L/min was designed and fabricated for sampling the bio-aerosols released during human breathing and coughing, and its performance was evaluated. The sampler was constructed using a cyclone separator with a cutoff size of 2.5 μm as a preseparator, a multinozzle virtual impactor with a cutoff size of 0.34 μm as an aerosol concentrator, and a Bio-Sampler, which is a commercial product, for collecting bio-aerosols in a collection fluid. The collection efficiency of the sampler was evaluated through simulations and experiments. Only particles with sizes of 0.1–4 μm were selectively collected in the collection fluid. Bacteriophage bio-aerosols were sampled using the developed sampler and ACD-200 Bobcat sampler, which is a commercial product. The amounts of collected bacteriophages were compared using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The sampling performance of the developed sampler was similar to that of the ACD-200 Bobcat sampler. Moreover, the developed sampler showed its ability to sample bio-aerosols of a specific size range and collect them directly in a collection fluid for the PCR analysis. Therefore, the developed sampler is expected to be useful for indoor environmental monitoring by effectively sampling the bio-aerosols released indoors during human breathing and coughing. Comprehensive Summary: Air consists of various different pollutants (both biological and non‐biological). COVID‐19 pandemic further threatens the air safety. Aerosol exposure causes many diseases including asthma, respiratory infections and death. Using protein biomarker for early diagnosis often fails due to its lower level at the very beginning of a disease. On another front, different technologies were attempted for realtime monitoring of air toxicity. Nonetheless, many aerosol exposures occur silently without any knowledge due to limitation of available analytical methods. Exhaled breath has emerged as a promising non‐invasive sample for disease diagnosis, including cancer and diabetes. Most recently, it was shown that rats emitted distinctive profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within minutes when exposed to different air pollutants including ozone and endotoxin. During the pandemic times, breath‐borne VOC was also used to rapidly screen COVID‐19. Pollutant exposure could result in changes in metabolism, thus releasing different patterns of VOCs via breath within very short time. Close monitoring of exhaled biomarker profile could spot the early signs of a disease, thus offering an earlier warning. Sensor array and machine learning together can lend a great hand toward such an objective. This mini review is undertaken to share such endeavors and inspire further innovations.
