Previous evidence suggests that hand shaping during reaching is modulated by the presence and the nature of the end-goal following object's grasp. Here we test whether such modulation is maintained in Parkinson's disease (PD). Six participants with PD and six healthy participants took part in the study. Participants were requested to reach towards a bottle filled with water, and then: (1) grasp it without performing any subsequent action; (2) grasp it and place it accurately on a target area; (3) grasp it and pour its contents within a container. The results showed that participants shaped their hand differently depending on the presence or absence of an action following object's grasp. However, the request to perform an action after grasp determined a modulation of hand kinematics which was delayed for PD than for control participants. Further, whereas for control participants the nature of the end-goal determined a modulation of hand shaping, for PD patients such modulation was not evident. Data are discussed in terms of the role played by basal ganglia in implementing anticipatory mechanisms for the control of manipulative activities. We contend that in PD patients these mechanisms are not totally compromised, but their implementation depends on the action information that has to be anticipated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In human perception, exogenous noise is known to yield a masking effect, i.e. an increase of the perceptual threshold relative to a stimulus acting on the same modality. However, somehow counter-intuitively, the opposite mechanism can occasionally occur: a decrease of the perceptual threshold for a non-vanishing, virtuous amount of noise. This mechanism, called stochastic resonance, is deemed to provide important information about the role of noise in the human brain. In this paper, we investigate stochastic resonance in a detection task in the auditory modality. Normal-hearing participants were asked to judge the presence of acoustic stimuli of different intensity and superimposed to different levels of white noise. The matrix-like outcomes of a behavioural experiment were fitted by a two-dimensional, noise-dependent psychometric function. The fit revealed a statistically significant stochastic resonance in 43% of the experimental runs. We conclude that, in the auditory modality, stochastic resonance is a tiny effect that, under conventional circumstances, is largely overrun by standard masking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Converging evidence suggests that dysfunctional inhibitory control might be at the roots of overeating and binge eating disorder (BED). The majority of these results stems from studies on obese populations, however we hypothesized that potential prodromes might be evident also in non-clinical conditions, when binge eating episodes are present (without a diagnosis of BED) and a normal Body Mass Index is preserved. To explore this issue, brain activity of 42 normal weight individuals with and without binge eating episodes (21 binge eaters and 21 non-binge eaters, BE and non-BE respectively) was assessed by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during response inhibition tasks. We adopted a food-modified version of a go/no-go (GNG) and stop signal task (SST): these tasks investigate different aspects of inhibitory control (action restraint and cancellation) that have been rarely studied in the same individuals but that are known to involve different neural networks. In addition, impulsivity traits were assessed with self-report instruments. Despite similar behavioral performances, the two groups differed in trait impulsivity and brain activity. The fMRI results revealed differential engagement of fronto-striatal regions between the groups during the tasks. The BE group, compared to non-BE, showed lower activation of the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and Putamen during the GNG task, and higher activation of the left MFG during the SST. These findings provide evidence of a dissociation of the neural underpinnings of action restraint and cancellation in impulsive individuals. Moreover, they add support to the hypothesis that impulsivity may be a possible hallmark of binge eating behavior (in the absence of weight or full-blown eating disorders) and yield new insights on the role of regions typically involved in response inhibition and selection as possible substrates of impulsive eating. Abstract: Broca’s area is classically associated with speech production. Recently, Broca’s area has also been implicated in speech perception and non-linguistic information processing. With respect to the latter function, Broca’s area is considered to be a central area in a network constituting the human mirror system, which maps observed or heard actions onto motor programs to execute analogous actions. These mechanisms share some similarities with Liberman’s motor theory, where objects of speech perception correspond to listener’s intended articulatory gestures. The aim of the current series of behavioral, TMS and fMRI studies was to test if Broca’s area is indeed implicated in such audio-motor transformations. More specifically, using a classical phonological rhyme priming paradigm, we investigated whether the role of Broca’s area could be purely phonological or rather, is lexical in nature. In the behavioral baseline study, we found a large priming effect in word prime/target pairs (W–W) and no effect for pseudo-words (PW–PW). Online TMS interference of Broca’s area canceled the priming difference between W–W and PW–PW by enhancing the effects for PW–PW. Finally, the fMRI study showed activation of Broca’s area for W–W pairs, but not for PW–PW pairs. Our data show that Broca’s area plays a significant role in speech perception strongly linked to the lexicality of a stimulus. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
