The Sikh community regularly contends with sexism rooted in an internalized misogyny. Epistemological violence draws strength from all-male translations of Guru Granth Sahib (Guru of the Sikhs). Drawing on a collective four decades of experience as Sikh practitioners and community organizers, Jaspreet Bal and Santbir Singh Sarkar Daman consider how the Sikh community has erased the feminine voice inherent in the Guru Granth Sahib through the exclusive male mediation of the text. They do a directed content analysis looking at the gender of interpreters and translators of Guru Granth Sahib. Aims To quantify Guinness-related branding in the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Championship. Methods Content analysis of Guinness-related branding ('Guinness' and the alibi brand 'Greatness') was shown during active play throughout all 15 games of the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Championship. The duration of each appearance was timed to the nearest second to provide information on the amount of time that Guinness-related branding was shown on screen. Census data and viewing figures were used to estimate gross and per capita alcohol impressions. Results Our coding identified a total of 3719 appearances of two logos of which 3415 (92%) were for 'Guinness' and 304 (8%) were for 'Greatness'. 'Guinness' imagery was present for 13,640 s (227.3 min or 3.8 h, 16% of total active play time), 'Greatness' was present for 944 s (15.7 min, 1% of total active play time), with a combined total of 14,584 s across all games (243 min or 4.05 h, 17% of active play time). The 15 games delivered an estimated 122.4 billion Guinness-related branded impressions to the UK population, including 758 million to children aged under 16. Conclusions Alcohol marketing was highly prevalent during the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Championship and was a significant source of exposure to alcohol marketing and advertising for children, likely influencing youth alcohol experimentation and uptake. Toxic masculinity fosters the domination and devaluation of women, often resulting in overt violence. As Punjabi women within Punjab and in diaspora have moved into the digital space, so has the reproduction of their womanhood. This paper serves to look at one of the many complex overlapping and intersecting trends that contributes to these constructions; Punjabi music videos. The author looked at the top 20 most viewed Punjabi music videos on YouTube in 2017 and coded for the gender of the producers and singers, as well as coding for themes in the final product. Major themes included that women were powerless, were objects to be acquired, were in need of saving, and were unable to consent. As an alternative to these toxic representations, the author suggests that the political potential of the multitude can be used to imagine digital spaces as sites of resistance where women reclaim telling their stories. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is law by ratification in both India and Canada. For this project the author conducted ethnographies in rural Punjab and Ontario, to study how the spirit of the Convention’s text is disseminated in two different contexts. The author argues that the CRC is inherently flawed because it is text-based and can therefore only create change in environments mediated by text. Access to textually mediated spaces is varied by country of origin, class and gender. The rural girl child in Punjab is, as a result, left largely outside the influence of the CRC. The article presents ‘Minimizing Assessments of Alcohol Advertising in the Six Nations Rugby Championship. Topics discussed include this was to ensure that our study could not be critiqued for recording a branded occurrence where we could not categorically say that this was shown; and learning may occur to allow recognition of partial brand exposure and will consider a separate analysis of this content in future.
