The photocatalytic conversion of biomass and plastic waste provides opportunities for sustainable fuel and chemical production. Heterogeneous photocatalysts, typically composed of semiconductors with distinctive redox properties in their conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB), facilitate both the oxidative and reductive valorization of organic feedstocks. This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the photorefinery of biomass and plastics from the perspective of the redox properties of photocatalysts. We explore the roles of the VB and CB in enhancing the value‐added conversion of biomass and plastics via various pathways. Our aim is to bridge the gap between photocatalytic mechanisms and renewable carbon feedstock valorization, inspiring further development in photocatalytic refinery of biomass and plastics. Microplastics (MPs) are one of the major substantial pollutants in the environment and are stored in sediments worldwide, especially in marine environments. This study shed light on the abundance, distribution, sources and chemical composition of MPs present in the surface sediments collected from the shelf part of the southeast coast of India, Bay of Bengal. A total of twenty-seven surface sediment samples were collected to study MPs pollution. The abundance and morphological characteristics of MPs were determined by counting using an Olympus SXZ7 stereo microscope. Raman spectroscopy analysis was used to identify the polymer type of the MPs. The average abundance of MPs in the study area is 460±275 MPs/kg in dry sediment. Regarding colour, transparent particles were predominant (46.42%), followed by blue, green, brown, etc. With respect to particle shape and size, fibres and 500-µm sized MPs are abundant. Polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) are the polymer types characterised in the study area. The higher abundance of MPs in the study area can be attenuated to human interruptions, viz., tourism, fishing and inappropriate sewage disposal in the marine environment. In addition to this, population density also plays an important role in providing MPs to the marine environment. This study provides the most valuable data to extrapolate the research for mitigating MP pollution in oceans. It also informs mankind about their disastrous activities on the marine environment, which is expected to recuperate quickly and negatively impact human health and the functionality of the marine system. Jackfruit seeds have been explored as one interesting alternative starch source to be used in the production of sustainable bioplastics. In this context, this work aimed to investigate the effect of sorbitol concentration, one alternative plasticizer to glycerol, and the starch properties of the films. A complete factorial experimental study was done based on five different concentrations of starch (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6% w/w) and sorbitol (40, 50, 60, 70, 80 g per 100 g of starch). The films were produced by casting technique and were characterized about thickness, optical properties, moisture resistance, mechanical properties, and morphology. The optical properties revealed opaque films, with opacity values ranging from 16.04 to 21.26%. Regarding moisture resistance, the less hydrophilic films showed lower plasticizer content. The water solubility varied from 25.48 to 38.93%; the water vapor permeability ranged from 9.99 to 11.82 × 10−9 (g/m s Pa) and the free energy of hydrophobic interactions varied from − 28.16 to 40.13 mJ m−1. Concerning the mechanical properties, the tensile strength of the films ranged from 3.55 to 9.25 MPa, and increasing the sorbitol concentration decreased the tensile strength and increased the elongation at break. The morphology and structure analysis showed that starch granules were not fully gelatinized, with microbubbles and grooves in the film matrix. Traditional food packaging coated paper is not environmentally friendly, and there have been many studies on oil- and water-resistant paper for food packaging. However, preparing oil- and water-resistant paper that is plastic-free, fluorine-free, and environmentally friendly is still a significant challenge. In this study, oil- and water-resistant paper for food packaging are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly and mixing coating methods. The layer-by-layer assembly coated paper exhibits excellent water resistance (Cobb 60 value of 20.5 g/m2, water contact angle value of 132°). The mixed coated paper not only has good water resistance (Cobb 60 value of 27.1 g/m2, water contact angle value of 131°), but also has excellent oil resistance (kit rating value of 8/12). The oil-resistant and waterproof mechanism of the coated paper is confirmed through scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the mechanical performance and coating adhesion of the mixed coated paper are the best, with an increase in the tensile index of 73.1 %. This study provides a feasible strategy for preparing biodegradable, plastic-free, and fluorine-free food packaging oil- and water-resistant paper, which is beneficial for reducing plastic pollution. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are popular biopolymers due to their potential use as biodegradable thermoplastics. In this study, three aerobic sequencing batch reactors were operated identically except for their temperatures, which were set at 15 °C, 35 °C, and 48 °C. The reactors were subjected to a feast-famine feeding regime, where carbon sources are supplied intermittently, to enrich PHAaccumulating microbial consortia. The biomass was sampled for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of both DNA (during the enrichment phase) and cDNA (during the enrichment and accumulation phases). All temperatures yielded highly enriched PHA-accumulating consortia. Thermophilic communities were significantly less diverse than those at low or mesophilic temperatures. In particular, Thauera was highly adaptable, abundant, and active at all temperatures. Low temperatures resulted in reduced PHA production rates and yields. Analysis of the microbial community revealed a collapse of community diversity during low-temperature PHA accumulation, suggesting that the substrate dosing strategy was unsuccessful at low temperatures. Photocatalytic cracking of NBPs is emerging as a promising way to cleave inert C−C bonds and abstract the carbon atoms from these wastes into valuable chemicals and fuels. However, controlling these processes is a huge challenge, ascribed to the complicated reactions of various NBPs. Herein, we summarize recent advances in the CO2 and carbon‐radical‐mediated photocatalytic cracking of NBPs, with an emphasis on the pivotal intermediates. The CO2‐mediated cracking proceeded with indiscriminate C−H/C−C bond cleavage of NBPs and tandem photoreduction of CO2, while carbon‐radical‐mediated cracking was realized by the prior activation of C−H bonds for selective C−C bond cleavage of NBPs. Catalytic generation and conversion of different intermediates greatly depend on the kinds of active species and the structure of photocatalysts under irradiation. Meanwhile, the fate of a specific intermediate is compared with small molecule activation to reveal the key problems in the cracking of NBPs. Plastic pollution is a problem that threatens the future of humanity, and various methods are being researched to solve it. Plastic biodegradation using microorganisms is one of these methods, and a recent study reported that plastic-degrading microorganisms activated by plasma increase the plastic decomposition rate. In contrast to microbial sterilization using low-temperature plasma, microbial activation requires a stable plasma discharge with a low electrode temperature suitable for biological samples and precise control over a narrow operating range. In this study, various plasma characteristics were evaluated using SDBD (Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge) to establish the optimal conditions of plasma that can activate plastic-degrading microorganisms. The SDBD electrode was manufactured using low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology to ensure chemical resistance, minimize impurities, improve heat conduction, and consider freedom in designing the electrode metal part. Plasma stability, which is important for microbial activation, was investigated by changing the frequency and pulse width of the voltage applied to the electrode, and the degree of activation of plastic-degrading microorganisms was evaluated under each condition. The present study examines the use of waste cooking oil (WCO) as a substrate for medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) production by Pseudomonas rhizophila S211. The genome analysis revealed that the S211 strain has a mcl-PHA cluster (phaC1ZC2DFI) encoding two class II PHA synthases (PhaC1 and PhaC2) separated by a PHA depolymerase (PhaZ), a transcriptional activator (PhaD) and two phasin-like proteins (PhaFI). Genomic annotation also identified a gene encoding family I.3 lipase that was able to hydrolyze plant oils and generate fatty acids as favorable carbon sources for cell growth and PHA synthesis via β-oxidation pathway. Using a three-variable Doehlert experimental design, the optimum conditions for mcl-PHA accumulation were achieved in 10% of WCO-based medium with an inoculum size of 10% and an incubation period of 48 h at 30 °C. The experimental yield of PHA from WCO was 1.8 g/L close to the predicted yield of 1.68 ± 0.14 g/L. Moreover, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis confirmed the extracted mcl-PHA. Overall, this study describes P. rhizophila as a cell factory for biosynthesis of biodegradable plastics and proposes green and efficient approach to cooking oil waste management by decreasing the cost of mcl-PHA production, which can help reduce the dependence on petroleum-based plastics. The ever-increasing presence of micropollutants necessitates the development of environmentally friendly bioremediation strategies. Inspired by the remarkable versatility and potent catalytic activities of microbial enzymes, researchers are exploring their application as biocatalysts for innovative environmental cleanup solutions. Microbial enzymes offer remarkable substrate specificity, biodegradability, and the capacity to degrade a wide array of pollutants, positioning them as powerful tools for bioremediation. However, practical applications are often hindered by limitations in enzyme stability and reusability. Enzyme immobilization techniques have emerged as transformative strategies, enhancing enzyme stability and reusability by anchoring them onto inert or activated supports. These improvements lead to more efficient pollutant degradation and cost-effective bioremediation processes. This review delves into the diverse immobilization methods, showcasing their success in degrading various environmental pollutants, including pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, microplastics, and industrial chemicals. By highlighting the transformative potential of microbial immobilized enzyme biocatalysts, this review underscores their significance in achieving a cleaner and more sustainable future through the mitigation of micropollutant contamination. Additionally, future research directions in areas such as enzyme engineering and machine learning hold immense promise for further broadening the capabilities and optimizing the applications of immobilized enzymes in environmental cleanup. Microplastics have become a pressing environmental issue due to their widespread presence in our ecosystems. Among various plastic components, polyethylene (PE) is a prevalent and persistent contaminant. Hydrothermal gasification (HTG), a promising technology for converting PE into syngas, holds great promise for mitigating the microplastic problem. In this study, we employ ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the HTG process of PE, shedding light on the intricate relationships between temperature, water content, carbon conversion efficiency, and product distributions. The results reveal that hydrothermal gasification of PE is a complex process involving multiple reaction pathways. Consistently with experimental findings, the calculations indicate that the gas phase exhibits a substantial hydrogen fraction, reaching up to 70%. Interestingly, our simulations reveal a dual role of water content in the HTG process. On one hand, water enhances hydrogen production by promoting the gas formation. On the other hand, it elevates the activation energy required for PE decomposition. Depending on the water content, the calculated activation energies range from 176 to 268 kJ/mol, which are significantly lower than those reported for thermal gasification (TG). This suggests that HTG may be a more efficient route for PE conversion. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of optimizing both temperature and water content in HTG systems to achieve high yields of hydrogen-rich syngas. The results obtained from our ReaxFF MD simulations demonstrate the robustness of this computational methodology in elucidating complex chemical reactions under extreme conditions. Our findings offer critical insights into the design of advanced waste management strategies for microplastics and contribute to the development of sustainable practices for resource recovery. Pyrolysis of waste plastics can produce a product mixture with a high concentration of olefins (>50 wt%). The olefins, as building blocks in the petroleum industry, are potential precursors for valuable commodity chemicals with higher values (>$2000 per ton). In this work, we produce aldehydes by hydroformylation of the olefins present in pyrolysis oil from colored post-consumer recycled high-density polyethylene (PCR-HDPE). The obtained aldehydes in the oil are then converted into aliphatic amines via reductive amination with a Ru/C catalyst. The aminated oil was characterized by multiple analytical chemistry techniques including elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with a Polyarc flame ionization detector. The concentration of metals in the PCR-HDPE and oil changes during the tandem processes, showing limited effects of these elements (e.g., Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Ti, Zn) on hydroformylation and reductive amination. Additionally, we demonstrated that reductive amination of aldehydes with varied carbon numbers and branching properties can be achieved in the presence of a complex mixture, including paraffins and aromatics. The results indicate that waste plastics have the potential to serve as a renewable source for mono and di aliphatic amines, thereby diminishing reliance on fossil feedstocks as the current primary amine source. Over 79 % of 6.3 billion tonnes of plastics produced from 1950 to 2015 have been disposed in landfills or found their way to the oceans, where they will reside for up to hundreds of years before being decomposed bringing upon significant dangers to our health and ecosystems. Plastic photoreforming offers an appealing alternative by using solar energy and water to transform plastic waste into value‐added chemical commodities, while simultaneously producing green hydrogen via the hydrogen evolution reaction. This review aims to provide an overview of the underlying principles of emerging plastic photoreforming technologies, highlight the challenges associated with experimental protocols and performance assessments, discuss recent global breakthroughs on the photoreforming of plastics, and propose perspectives for future research. A critical assessment of current plastic photoreforming studies shows a lack of standardised conditions, hindering comparison amongst photocatalyst performance. Guidelines to establish a more accurate evaluation of materials and systems are proposed, with the aim to facilitate the translation of promising fundamental discovery in photocatalysts design. Highlights Poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) is popular because of its low cost, biodegradability, good processing properties, flexibility, and mechanical features. In this study, we explore the potential of PBAT‐based bioplastics by adding AgVO3 nanorods with PBAT to reduce costs. We produced nanocomposite films of PBAT reinforced with 1, 3, and 5 wt% of AgVO3 nanorods using solvent casting. The inclusion of AgVO3 in the structure of PBAT was investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The nanocomposite films demonstrate excellent properties, surpassing those of single‐component blends, enhancing mechanical properties, and improving the barrier properties of nanocomposite films. The water vapor transmission rate of AgVO3 reinforced (5 wt%) nanocomposite films improved by 42.45% compared to pure PBAT films. The tensile strength of the PBA‐3 film was 37.19 MPa, exhibiting higher strength than the films produced from clean PBAT (19.73 MPa). The AgVO3‐reinforced films demonstrated increased resistance to moisture and water, as indicated by their higher water contact angle values (88.04°). Food‐borne bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli have been stable to the antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites on the addition of AgVO3.The potential applications of these nanocomposite films in food packaging are promising, offering a sustainable and effective solution to food preservation. The AgVO3‐filled poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) nanocomposite films exhibit superior mechanical, barrier, and resistance to moisture and water compared to neat PBAT films. The water vapor transmission rate of the film is significantly enhanced, with a 42.45% enhancement in films reinforced with 5 wt% AgVO3. The prevalent use of unsustainable polymers in current X‐ray scintillators poses a significant environmental concern. The advancement of biodegradable X‐ray scintillators holds promise in mitigating escalating environmental issues tied to electronic or medical waste and carbon footprints. Herein, a biodegradable and flexible X‐ray scintillation film is presented employing lead‐free 0D Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite nanoparticles integrated into densified‐delignified wood (Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood). The Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood film demonstrates precise and detailed X‐ray imaging capabilities, achieving a high spatial resolution of 10 line pairs per millimeter (lp·mm−1). To minimize the environmental impact associated with disposal, metal and halide ions (e.g., Cs+, Cu+, I−) from Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood can be easily retrieved by a simple solvent extraction process. The approach showcases the potential of biodegradable wood‐based X‐ray scintillation screens as alternatives to conventional, plastic‐based screens. Petroleum‐based plastics levy significant environmental and economic costs that can be alleviated with sustainably sourced, biodegradable, and bio‐based polymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, industrial‐scale production of PHAs faces barriers stemming from insufficient product yields and high costs. To address these challenges, we must look beyond the current suite of microbes for PHA production and investigate non‐model organisms with versatile metabolisms. In that vein, we assessed PHA production by the photosynthetic purple non‐sulfur bacteria (PNSB) Rhodomicrobium vannielii and Rhodomicrobium udaipurense. We show that both species accumulate PHA across photo‐heterotrophic, photo‐hydrogenotrophic, photo‐ferrotrophic, and photo‐electrotrophic growth conditions, with either ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or dinitrogen gas (N2) as nitrogen sources. Our data indicate that nitrogen source plays a significant role in dictating PHA synthesis, with N2 fixation promoting PHA production during photoheterotrophy and photoelectrotrophy but inhibiting production during photohydrogenotrophy and photoferrotrophy. We observed the highest PHA titres (up to 44.08 mg/L, or 43.61% cell dry weight) when cells were grown photoheterotrophically on sodium butyrate with N2, while production was at its lowest during photoelectrotrophy (as low as 0.04 mg/L, or 0.16% cell dry weight). We also find that photohydrogenotrophically grown cells supplemented with NH4Cl exhibit the highest electron yields – up to 58.89% – while photoheterotrophy demonstrated the lowest (0.27%–1.39%). Finally, we highlight superior electron conversion and PHA production compared to a related PNSB, Rhodopseudomonas palustris TIE‐1. This study illustrates the value of studying non‐model organisms like Rhodomicrobium for sustainable PHA production and indicates future directions for exploring PNSB metabolisms. Microplastics have been recently detected in many environmental media and living organisms, yet their transfer and toxicity to humans are poorly known. Here, we review microplastic transfer in the food chain with focus on microplastic pollution sources, methods to analyze microplastics in food, health impact of food-related microplastic exposure, and remediation of microplastic pollution. Microplastic pollution sources include seafood, food additives, packaging materials, and agricultural and industrial products. Remediation techniques comprise the use of microbial enzymes and biofilms. Microplastic detection methods in food rely on separation and quantification by optical detection, scanning electron micrography, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Human health impact following microplastic ingestion include cancers, organ and respiration damage, and reproductive impairments. Overall, microplastic toxicity is mainly due to their ability to enter the metabolism, adsorption into the circulatory system for translocation, and difficulty, if not impossibility, of excretion. Bioplastics appear as an alternative to fossil fuel-derived plastics because bioplastics are carbon neutral and often biodegradable, thus potentially solving the issues of plastic pollution and climate change. In particular, polylactic acid is a substitute for traditional petrochemical-based polymers. Here, we review polylactic acid production with focus on surface modification and integration of bioactive compounds. Surface can be modified by chemical treatment, photografting, surface entrapment, plasma treatment, and coating. Bioactive compounds can be incorporated by encapsulation, impregnation, melt blending, solvent casting, electrospinning, and in situ polymerization. Biopolymers are highly desirable alternatives to petrochemical-based plastics owing to their biodegradable nature. The production of bioplastics, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), has been widely reported using various bacterial cultures with substrates ranging from pure to biowaste-derived sugars. However, large-scale production and economic feasibility are major limiting factors. Now, using algal biomass for PHA production offers a potential solution to these challenges with a significant environmental benefit. Algae, with their unique ability to utilize carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas (GHG) and wastewater as feed for growth, can produce value-added products in the process and, thereby, play a crucial role in promoting environmental sustainability. The sugar recovery efficiency from algal biomass is highly variable depending on pretreatment procedures due to inherent compositional variability among their cell walls. Additionally, the yields, composition, and properties of synthesized PHA vary significantly among various microbial PHA producers from algal-derived sugars. Therefore, the microalgal biomass pretreatments and synthesis of PHA copolymers still require considerable investigation to develop an efficient commercial-scale process. This review provides an overview of the microbial potential for PHA production from algal biomass and discusses strategies to enhance PHA production and its properties, focusing on managing GHGs and promoting a sustainable future. Plastics have accumulated in open environments, such as oceans, rivers, and land, for centuries, but their effect has been of concern for only decades. Plastic pollution is a global challenge at the forefront of public awareness worldwide due to its negative effects on ecological systems, animals, human health, and national economies. Therefore, interest has increased regarding specific circular economies for the development of plastic production and the investigation of green technologies for plastic degradation after use on an appropriate timescale. Moreover, biodegradable plastics have been found to contain potential new hazards compared with conventional plastics due to the physicochemical properties of the polymers involved. Recently, plastic biodegradation was defined as microbial conversion using functional microorganisms and their enzymatic systems. This is a promising strategy for depolymerizing organic components into carbon dioxide, methane, water, new biomass, and other higher value bioproducts under both oxic and anoxic conditions. This study reviews microplastic pollution, the negative consequences of plastic use, and the current technologies used for plastic degradation and biodegradation mediated by microorganisms with their drawbacks; in particular, the important and questionable role of extremophilic multi-enzyme-producing bacteria in synergistic systems of plastic decomposition is discussed. This study emphasizes the key points for enhancing the plastic degradation process using extremophiles, such as cell hydrophobicity, amyloid protein, and other relevant factors. Bioprospecting for novel mechanisms with unknown information about the bioproducts produced during the plastic degradation process is also mentioned in this review with the significant goals of CO2 evolution and increasing H2/CH4 production in the future. Based on the potential factors that were analyzed, there may be new ideas for in vitro isolation techniques for unculturable/multiple-enzyme-producing bacteria and extremophiles from various polluted environments. The fabrication of ultra-tough biodegradable nanocomposite films with antibacterial activity and antioxidant properties remains a huge challenge. Herein, we developed a super-tough antibacterial biodegradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite film by simply introducing highly effective antibacterial agent PDA@LS-Ag into PVA matrix. The antibacterial agent PDA@LS-Ag was synthesized from the mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and green biomass sodium lignosulfonate (LS) via a facile microwave-assisted reduction strategy, in which PDA played the role of reducing agent and LS performed as the dispersant. The tensile strength of the PVA nanocomposite film with 5 wt% addition of PDA@LS-Ag reached up to 131.7 MPa, which was far higher than most of engineering plastics. The excellent mechanical performance was resulted from the synergistic effect of the unique nanoscale phase-separation structure and the dense hydrogen bonds between the PDA@LS-Ag nanoparticles and PVA matrix. Owing to the existence of silver nanoparticles and rich phenolic hydroxyl groups, the PDA@LS-Ag nanoparticles also endued the composite film with good antibacterial activity, outstanding antioxidant activity, and UV-shielding properties. As the biomass LS, PDA, and the PVA matrix are all biodegradable, this work provides a feasible way for preparing highly strong and super-tough biodegradable nanocomposite films with antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The utilization of biodegradable hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides in the agricultural and biomedical sectors is anticipated to be a growing field of interest. Due to increasing environmental pollution, the current global goal is to synthesize sustainable materials based on natural polysaccharides to conserve natural resources for the future. In this study, we synthesized an amla-based hydrogel, denoted as AL-g-poly(MAA), using the graft-free radical polymerization method. Methacrylic acid (MAA) was employed as the monomer, N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) served as the crosslinker, and ammonium persulfate (APS) acted as the initiator. The synthesized hydrogel, AL-g-poly(MAA), underwent optimization by adjusting seven parameters: initiator, solvent, time, monomer, power, pH, and crosslinker, to achieve the highest swelling percentage. The optimized values were as follows: solvent: 10 ml, time: 150 s, monomer: 0.039 mol/L, power: 60%, pH: 7, and crosslinker: 0.0648 mol/L. The cross-linking process was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The swelling behavior of the synthesized hydrogels was determined in saline solutions with varying ionic strengths and concentrations, revealing maximum swelling in solutions with lower ionic strengths and concentrations. Additionally, the density and porosity of the hydrogels were examined. The biodegradability of AL-g-poly(MAA) was tested through soil burial and vermicomposting experiments, demonstrating its significant potential for agriculture applications. Furthermore, both the backbone and the synthesized hydrogel were evaluated for antibacterial activity against four bacterial strains (Burkholderia gladioli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus), revealing strong potential as an antimicrobial agent and therefore having applications in the biomedical field. Starch-based thermoplastic polymer is a biopolymer that is being widely explored as a replacement for conventional polymers. Since thermoplastic starch suffers from mechanical defects, certain mechanical and thermal properties of starch-based polymers can be improved by incorporating fillers or reinforcements derived mainly from natural substances. This article reports the preparation, physicochemical, and mechanical characterization and biodegradation of starch-based bioplastics extracted from potato (Solanum tuberosum) peels using glycerol (G) as plasticizer and reinforced with carob powder, a readily growing plant in Mediterranean climates. The present study investigates the effect of incorporating different proportions (0, 2, 5, 10, and 15 wt.%) of carob powder (Cb) in the films thus prepared. These biopolymer films were fully characterized using analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR/ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical evaluations, and biodegradability assessments. Context: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable plastic. It was introduced to the plastics market in 1998 and since then has been widely used around the world. The main idea of this research is to perform quantum chemical calculations to study the potential toxicity of PBAT and its degradation products. We analyzed the electron transfer capacity to determine its potential toxicity. We found that biodegradable products formed with benzene rings are as good electron acceptors as PBAT and OOH•. Our results indicate that the biodegradation products are potentially as toxic as PBAT. This might explain why biodegradation products alter the photosynthetic system of plants and inhibit their growth. From this and other previous investigations, we can think that biodegradable plastics could represent a potential environmental risk. Mulching is a common method increasing crop yield and achieving out-of-season production; nevertheless, their removal poses a significant environmental danger. In this scenario, the use of biodegradable plastic mulches comes up as a solution to increase the sustainability of this practice, as they can be tilled in soil without risk for the environment. In this context, it is important to study the microbial response to this practice, considering their direct involvement in plastic biodegradation. This study evaluated the biodegradation of three commercial mulch residues: one conventional non-biodegradable mulch versus two biodegradable ones (white and black compostable Mater-Bi mulches). The experiment was conducted under three incubation temperatures (room temperature 20–25 °C, 30 °C, and 45 °C) for a 6-month trial using fallow agricultural soil. Soil without plastic mulch residues was used as a control. White mater-bi biodegradable mulch residues showed higher degradation rates up to 88.90% at 30 °C, and up to 69.15% at room temperature. Furthermore, incubation at 45 °C determines the absence of degradation for all types of mulch considered. Moreover, bacterial alpha diversity was primarily influenced by plastic type and temperature, while fungal populations were mainly affected by temperature. Beta diversity was impacted by all experimental variables. Predicted functional genes crucial for degrading complex substrates, including those encoding hydrolases, cutinases, cellobiosidases, and lipases, were derived from 16S rRNA gene sequencing data. Cluster analysis based on predicted enzyme-encoding gene abundance revealed two clusters, mainly linked to sampling time. Finally, core microbiome analysis identified dominant bacterial and fungal taxa in various soil-plastic ecosystems during degradation, pinpointing species potentially involved in plastic breakdown. The present study allows an assessment of how different temperatures affect the degradation of mulch residues in soil, providing important insights for different climatic growing zones. Graphene oxide nanosheet (GO) is a multifunctional platform for binding with nanoparticles and stacking with two dimensional substrates. In this study, GO nanosheets were sonochemically decorated with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) and self-assembled into a hydrogel of GO–ZnO nanocomposite. The GO–ZnO hydrogel structure is a bioinspired approach for preserving graphene-based nanosheets from van der Waals stacking. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed that the sonochemical synthesis led to the formation of ZnO crystals on GO platforms. High water content (97.2%) of GO–ZnO hydrogel provided good property of ultrasonic dispersibility in water. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic analysis (UV–vis) revealed that optical band gap energy of ZnO nanoparticles (∼3.2 eV) GO–ZnO nanosheets (∼2.83 eV). Agar well diffusion tests presented effective antibacterial activities of GO–ZnO hydrogel against gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) and gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus). Especially, GO–ZnO hydrogel was directly used for brush painting on biodegradable polylactide (PLA) thin films. Graphene-based nanosheets with large surface area are key to van der Waals stacking and adhesion of GO–ZnO coating to the PLA substrate. The GO–ZnO/PLA films were characterized using photography, light transmittance spectroscopy, coating stability, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopic mapping (EDS), antibacterial test and mechanical tensile measurement. Specifically, GO–ZnO coating on PLA substrate exhibited stability in aqueous food simulants for packaging application. GO–ZnO coating inhibited the infectious growth of E. coli biofilm. GO–ZnO/PLA films had strong tensile strength and elastic modulus. As a result, the investigation of antibacterial GO–ZnO hydrogel and GO–ZnO coating on PLA film is fundamental for sustainable development of packaging and biomedical applications. Biodegradable plastics, hailed for their environmental friendliness, may pose unforeseen risks as they undergo gastrointestinal degradation, forming oligomer nanoplastics. Despite this, the influence of gastrointestinal degradation on the potential human toxicity of biodegradable plastics remains poorly understood. To this end, the impact of the murine in vivo digestive system is investigated on the biotransformation, biodistribution, and toxicity of PLA polymer and PLA oligomer MPs. Through a 28‐day repeated oral gavage study in mice, it is revealed that PLA polymer and oligomer microplastics undergo incomplete and complete degradation, respectively, in the gastrointestinal tract. Incompletely degraded PLA polymer microplastics transform into oligomer nanoplastics, heightening bioavailability and toxicity, thereby exacerbating overall toxic effects. Conversely, complete degradation of PLA oligomer microplastics reduces bioavailability and mitigates toxicity, offering a potential avenue for toxicity reduction. Additionally, the study illuminates shared targets and toxicity mechanisms in Parkinson's disease‐like neurotoxicity induced by both PLA polymer and PLA oligomer microplastics. This involves the upregulation of MICU3 in midbrains, leading to neuronal mitochondrial calcium overload. Notably, neurotoxicity is mitigated by inhibiting mitochondrial calcium influx with MCU‐i4 or facilitating mitochondrial calcium efflux with DBcAMP in mice. Oxidative degradation is a powerful method to degrade plastics into oligomers and small oxidized products. While thermal energy has been conventionally employed as an external stimulus, recent advances in photochemistry have enabled photocatalytic oxidative degradation of polymers under mild conditions. This tutorial review presents an overview of oxidative degradation, from its earliest examples to emerging strategies. This review briefly discusses the motivation and the development of thermal oxidative degradation of polymers with a focus on underlying mechanisms. Then, we will examine modern studies primarily relevant to catalytic thermal oxidative degradation and photocatalytic oxidative degradation. Sustainable production of 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PDO) from biomass is of great importance because 1,4-PDO is a monomer of degradable polyesters and plastics. This paper reviews the conversion of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) and furfural as well as their derivatives alkyl levulinate, γ-valerolactone (GVL) and furfuryl alcohol (FAL) into 1,4-PDO. MoOx or ReOx modified noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal catalysts with core–shell and alloy structures show a high 1,4-PDO yield and stability in LA hydrogenation under severe hydrothermal conditions. The conversion of furfural to 1,4-PDO involves the initial C＝O bond hydrogenation to form FAL, the consecutive acid-catalyzed ring-opening and the final hydrogenation. Therefore, it needs a bifunctional catalyst composed of metallic species and acid sites to improve the 1,4-PDO yield. Efforts are made here to highlight the employed catalysts, structure–performance relationship, reaction pathway and reaction mechanism in detail. The current challenges for large-scale applications of conversion of LA and furfural to 1,4-PDO have been proposed, including process development, catalyst cost, solvent and active site distribution. The accumulation of plastic packaging wastes in the natural environment highlights the significance of sustainable alternatives. Paper is widely used as a biodegradable packaging material, but poor mechanical strength, barrier properties, and water resistance limit its utility. Typical paper coating materials applied to overcome such drawbacks, such as polyethylene (PE) and ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), are not desirable for sustainability due to environmental persistence. Here, we report a biodegradable, biocompatible, robust, and high-barrier paper coating strategy using boric acid-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Various crosslinked-PVA solutions were prepared using boric acid (BA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a crosslinker and an acid catalyst, respectively. The solutions were coated onto the Kraft paper (KP) through facile bar coating with epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a binder (henceforth referred to as coated papers). The coated papers (KP-P, KP-PB, KP-PBH) show remarkably improved oxygen (∼0.89 cc m−2 d−1) and water vapor (∼5.17 g m−2 d−1) barrier properties as well as tensile strength (∼53.0 MPa) that is retained in moist conditions. The coated papers were significantly mineralized into CO2 (59.2–81.6% over 111 d) in the simulated marine environment biodegradation test. Depolymerization of polymer chains and surface degradation of coated papers are evidenced via FT-IR and SEM, respectively. The microcosm test revealed that the intensive disintegration of the coated papers is synergistically driven by both biotic and abiotic factors (i.e., mechanical stress). Moreover, the in vitro biocompatibility tests employing human embryonic kidney and mouse embryonic fibroblast cells, and in vivo biocompatibility test with mice suggest that the coated papers are highly biocompatible. Polyethylene (PE), a highly prevalent non‐biodegradable polymer in the field of plastics, presents a waste management issue. To alleviate this issue, bio‐based PE (bio‐PE), derived from renewable resources like corn and sugarcane, offers an environmentally friendly alternative. This review discusses various production methods of bio‐PE, including fermentation, gasification, and catalytic conversion of biomass. Interestingly, the bio‐PE production volumes and market are expanding due to the growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. Additionally, the production of PE and bio‐PE biocomposites using agricultural waste as filler materials, highlights the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. According to previous studies, addition of ≈50% defibrillated corn and abaca fibers into bio‐PE matrix and a compatibilizer, results in the highest Young's modulus of 4.61 and 5.81 GPa, respectively. These biocomposites have potential applications in automotive, building construction, and furniture industries. Moreover, the advancement made in abiotic and biotic degradation of PE and PE biocomposites is elucidated to address their environmental impacts. Finally, the paper concludes with insights into the opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives in the sustainable production and utilization of PE and bio‐PE biocomposites. Pyrolytic synergistic interactions, in which the production of pyrolyzates is enhanced or inhibited, commonly occur during the co-pyrolysis of different polymeric materials, such as plastics and biomass. Although these interactions can increase the yield of desired pyrolysis products under controlled degradation conditions, the desired compounds must be separated from complex pyrolyzates and further purified. To balance these dual effects, this study was aimed at examining pyrolytic synergistic interactions during slow heating co-pyrolysis of biodegradable plastics including polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexaoate) (PHBH) and petroleum-based plastics including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). Comprehensive investigations based on thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and evolved gas analysis-mass spectrometry revealed that PLA and PHBH decompose at lower temperatures (273–378 °C) than HDPE, PP, and PS (386–499 °C), with each polymer undergoing independent decomposition without any pyrolytic interactions. Thus, the independent pyrolysis of biodegradable plastics, such as PLA and PHBH, with common plastics, such as HDPE, PP, and PS, can theoretically be realized through temperature control, enabling the selective recovery of their pyrolyzates in different temperature ranges. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)) is an attractive biodegradable plastic alternative to petroleum-based plastic. However, the cost of microbial-based bioplastic production mainly lies in the cultivation medium. In this study, we screened the isolates capable of synthesizing P(3HB) using sugarcane bagasse (SCB) waste as a carbon source from 79 Bacillus isolates that had previously shown P(3HB) production using a commercial medium. The results revealed that isolate S356, identified as Bacillus cereus using 16S rDNA and gyrB gene analysis, had the highest P(3HB) accumulation. The highest P(3HB) yield (5.16 g/L, 85.3% of dry cell weight) was achieved by cultivating B. cereus S356 in an optimal medium with 1.5% total reducing sugar with SCB hydrolysate as the carbon source and 0.25% yeast extract as the nitrogen source. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed the accumulation of approximately 3–5 P(3HB) granules in each B. cereus S356 cell. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the polymer extracted from B. cereus S356 was P(3HB). Notably, during cultivation for P(3HB) plastic production, B. cereus S356 also secreted bacteriocin, which had high antibacterial activity against the same species (Bacillus cereus). Overall, this work demonstrated the possibility of co-producing eco-friendly biodegradable plastic P(3HB) and bacteriocin from renewable resources using the potential of B. cereus S356. The global trend towards conscious consumption plays an important role in consumer preferences regarding both the composition and quality of food and packaging materials, including sustainable ones. The development of biodegradable active packaging materials could reduce both the negative impact on the environment due to a decrease in the use of oil-based plastics and the amount of synthetic preservatives. This review discusses relevant functional additives for improving the bioactivity of biopolymer-based films. Addition of plant, microbial, animal and organic nanoparticles into bio-based films is discussed. Changes in mechanical, transparency, water and oxygen barrier properties are reviewed. Since microbial and oxidative deterioration are the main causes of food spoilage, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of natural additives are discussed, including perspective ones for the development of biodegradable active packaging. In this work, a novel electrospun nanofiber (PAN/TpBD; 2,4,6‐triformylphloroglucinol [Tp] and benzidine [BD]; polyacrylonitrile [PAN]) was fabricated via a facile electrospinning method and utilized as adsorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) of phthalate esters (PAEs) (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and dioctyl phthalate) in biodegradable plastics. The prepared PAN/TpBD combines the strong stability of nanofibers with increased exposure sites for covalent organic frameworks and enhanced interactions with the target, thus improving the enrichment effect on the target. The extraction efficiency of PAN/TpBD reached above 80%. Based on PAN/TpBD, a TFME‐high‐performance liquid chromatography method was established, and the experimental parameters were optimized. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the PAEs of this method varied linearly in the range of 10–10 000 µg/L with low detection limits (0.69–2.72 µg/L). The intra‐day and inter‐day relative standard deviation values of the PAEs were less than 8.04% and 8.73%, respectively. The adsorbent can achieve more than 80% recovery of the five targets after six times reuse. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace PAEs in biodegradable plastics with recoveries ranging from 80.1% to 113.4% and relative standard deviations were less than 9.45%. Biodegradable plastics are gaining popularity as environmentally friendly functional materials. This study focuses on the preparation of aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) reinforced cellulose acetate composite films using a cost‐effective approach. The process involves synthesizing bamboo‐derived cellulose acetate (BDCA), dissolving it in tetrahydrofuran with glycerol as a plasticizer, and incorporating Al(OH)3 particles into the casting solution to reinforce the cellulose acetate film. Analyses on microstructure and characteristics of the films were conducted through various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction (XRD), water contact angle measurement, and tensile testing. The results indicate that the Al(OH)3 particles were well‐dispersed in the composite films, leading to a strong interaction with the cellulose acetate matrix. As a result, the prepared composite films exhibited significantly higher tensile strength compared to pure bamboo‐derived cellulose film. Additionally, they demonstrated improved anti‐ultraviolet properties and a lower water vapor transmission rate, despite being more hydrophilic. This method holds significant potential for commercial applications in producing high‐performance cellulose acetate‐based composite films. The ubiquitous incorporation of plastics into daily life, coupled with inefficient recycling practices, has resulted in the accumulation of millions of metric tons of plastic waste, that poses a serious threat to the Earth's sustainability. Plastic pollution, a global problem, disrupts the ecological balance and endangers various life forms. Efforts to combat plastic pollution are underway, with a promising avenue being biological degradation facilitated by certain insects and their symbiotic gut microorganisms, particularly bacteria. This review consolidates existing knowledge on plastic degradation by insects and their influence on gut microbiota. Additionally, it delves into the potential mechanisms employed by insects in symbiosis with gut bacteria, exploring the bioconversion of waste plastics into value‐added biodegradable polymers through mineralization. These insights hold significant promise for the bio‐upcycling of plastic waste, opening new horizons for future biomanufacturing of high‐value chemicals from plastic‐derived compounds. Finally, we weigh the pros and cons of future research endeavors related to the bioprospection of plastic‐degrading bacteria from underexplored insect species. A fully biodegradable, ultra‐sensitive, and soft strain sensor is pivotal for temporary, real‐time monitoring of microdeformations, crucial in disease diagnosis, surgical precision, and prognosis of muscular, and vascular conditions. Nevertheless, the strain sensitivity of previous biodegradable sensors, denoted by gauge factor (GF) up to ≈100, falls short of requirements for complex biomedical monitoring scenarios, specifically monitoring cardio‐cerebrovascular diseases with microscale variations in vascular surface strain. Here, a fully biodegradable, ultra‐sensitive crack‐based flexible strain sensor is introduced achieving GF of 1355 at 1.5% strain through integration of molybdenum (Mo) film, molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) adhesion layer, and polycaprolactone (PCL) substrate. Analysis of crack morphology of biodegradable thin‐film metals, including Mo, tungsten (W), and magnesium (Mg), reveals material‐dependent sensitivity and repeatability of crack‐based strain sensors. The effect of the adhesion layer and polymer substrate is also investigated. Overall morphological studies on the sensor present a comprehensive understanding of metal film cracking behavior and corresponding performance characterization, showing significant potential for highly sensitive sensors. A hybrid membrane composed of candelilla wax (Cw), beeswax (Bw), and polybutylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate (PBAT) is introduced to provide hydrophobic, yet flexible encapsulation. In vivo, short‐term (≈3 days) monitoring of vascular pulsatility underscores the potential of the sensing tool for rapid, accurate, and temporal disease diagnosis and treatment. Arbitrary disposal of plastic waste into landfills and oceans can disturb the ecological system and even challenge human survival. Centralized plastic recycling process only works for selected types of plastics (e.g., polyethylene) with limited contribution (<10%), because of high infrastructure requirement. Comparatively, photoreforming of plastic waste for commodity and fuels production is much more facile and decentralizable, and thus holds great potential to mitigate the plastic waste challenge. To this end, a fully solar powered photoelectrochemical system is developed to selectively upgrade polyimide waste (often appears in electronic waste) into valuable commodity chemicals, including succinic acid, acetic acid, and formic acid, and cogenerating green hydrogen fuels. It is also demonstrated that one of the key monomer, pyromellitic acid, and the precious metals (in electronic waste) can be fully recycled. This proof‐of‐concept demonstration provides a new viewpoint for designing decentralized photoelectrochemical system for simultaneous plastic waste upcycling and renewable fuel synthesis, critical for a sustainable plastic economy. In the natural environment, plastics and microplastics (MPs) are difficult to break down due to their hydrophobicity, the presence of persistent covalent bonds, and their functional groups' resistance to attack. The destiny of both organic and inorganic pollutants at contaminated areas can be influenced by MPs ability to absorb them. Because of their enormous surface to volume ratio and chemical surface characteristics, MPs are able to absorb dangerous substances from their surroundings. Accordingly, the study's main objectives were to provide a concise review of characterization techniques of MP biodegradation techniques, including the nano‐enabled methods, and the gaps in current research were outlined. This review paper summarizes the degradation mechanism and efficiency of MPs in different circumstances. For the purpose of eliminating plastic pollution, this work will help for the further studies. With the growing global demand for biodegradable plastics, the hydrogenation of dimethyl maleate (DMM) to produce 1,4-butanediol (BDO), raw materials for poly(butylene succinate), has become one of the hot spots in chemical industry. In this work, we synthesized a series of Cu@C/ZnO–Sx catalysts by the method of sorbitol modification for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of DMM. The modification with appropriate sorbitol led to a decoration of carbon on catalyst surface, which improved the copper dispersion and Cu+/(Cu0 + Cu+) molar ratio in the Cu@C/ZnO–S0.08 catalyst. The carbon decoration not only promoted the formation of more copper species having stronger interaction with ZnO, but also enhanced the absorption of ester on catalyst surface. These distinctive properties contributed to the high performance of the Cu@C/ZnO–S0.08 catalyst in DMM hydrogenation, achieving an excellent BDO yield of 98.4% and superior reusability. As a way to reduce microplastics or nano-plastics in the ocean, it is of interest to develop biodegradable paper-based drinking straws to replace non-degradable plastic drinking straws. Primary questions to be addressed include how to design suitable coatings for paper drinking straws. Such coatings not only need to resist water. In addition, consumers have high expectations for the strength of a drinking straw. It is proposed here to replace non-biodegradable polypropylene, which is presently the main component of straws, with biodegradable and hydrophobic coating components via an entropy-driven approach. It is further proposed to develop colored paper-based drinking straws with cellulose nematic liquid crystal photonic pigments as a way to make the product stand out visibly, while at the same time mediating the usage of toxic chemical pigments. In recent years, there has been continuous growth in the market for polylactide/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) which can be attributed to the increasing preference for environmentally friendly products derived from renewable resources. Apart from its established biomedical applications, polylactide is being considered as a replacement for petroleum-based polymers in various industries, including packaging, electronics, automotive, and textiles. However, PLA modification is necessary to meet the properties of common thermoplastics for target applications. One of the modification methods involves the synthesis of PLA block copolymers, including widely exploited polymers of vinyl monomers (PVM). This review article covers a wide range of applications suggested for PLA/PVM block copolymers as discussed in recent articles. A brief overview of the synthesis methods for PLA/PVM block copolymers is provided. The tendency of block copolymers to self-assemble, leading to specific morphologies, is discussed, and applications that take advantage of this behavior, such as polymeric micelles or porous materials, are highlighted. Examples of using micelles for the delivery of biologically active compounds are presented. Other biomedical applications, such as materials for tissue engineering and medical devices, are also discussed. The capture and reduction of atmospheric dinitrogen gas to ammonium can be accomplished through the enzyme nitrogenase in a process known as biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), by a class of microbes known as diazotrophs. The diazotroph Azotobacter vinelandii is a model organism for the study of aerobic nitrogen fixation, and in recent years has been promoted as a potential producer of biofertilizers. Prior reports have demonstrated the potential to partially deregulate BNF in A. vinelandii, resulting in accumulation and extracellular release of ammonium. In many cases, deregulation requires the introduction of transgenic genes or elements to yield the desired phenotype, and the long‐term stability of these strains has been reported to be somewhat problematic. In this work, we constructed two strains of A. vinelandii where regulation can be precisely controlled without the addition of any foreign genes or genetic markers. Regulation is maintained through native promoters found in A. vinelandii that can be induced through the addition of extraneous galactose. These strains result in varied degrees of regulation of BNF, and as a result, the release of extracellular ammonium is controlled in a precise, and galactose concentration‐dependent manner. In addition, these strains yield high biomass levels, similar to the wild‐type A. vinelandii strain and are further able to produce high percentages of the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a biobased and biodegradable polymer with properties comparable to polypropylene and therefore has the potential to replace conventional plastics. PHB is intracellularly accumulated by prokaryotic organisms. For the cells PHB functions manly as carbon and energy source, but all possible functions of PHB are still not known. Synechocystis (cyanobacteria) accumulates PHB using light as energy and CO2 as carbon source. The main trigger for PHB accumulation in cyanobacteria is nitrogen and phosphorous depletion with simultaneous surplus of carbon and energy. For the above reasons, obtaining knowledge about external factors influencing PHB accumulation is of highest interest. This study compares the effect of continuous light exposure and day/night (16/8 h) cycles on selected physiology parameters of three Synechocystis strains. We show that continuous illumination at moderate light intensities leads to an increased PHB accumulation in Synechocystis salina CCALA 192 (max. 14.2% CDW – cell dry weight) compared to day/night cycles (3.7% CDW). In addition to PHB content, glycogen and cell size increased, while cell density and cell viability decreased. The results offer new approaches for further studies to gain deeper insights into the role of PHB in cyanobacteria to obtain bioplastics in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Biodegradable films are considered an alternative to petroleum‐based plastics to solve environmental problems. In this study, potato flour films are prepared with dispersions at pH 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. The film‐forming dispersion at pH 7 shows the highest apparent viscosity. Dispersions at alkaline conditions show a reduction in particle size, resulting in a smooth film surface. Films at alkaline conditions present a yellow appearance and have the lower transmittance. The film at pH 5 has the highest retrogradation enthalpy and glass transition temperature, while its moisture content and solubility are the lowest. The water contact angle increases from 33.33° to 93.67° with the increase in pH. However, pH has no significant effect on the water vapor permeability. The tensile strength and elongation at break increase slightly with the increase in pH. Overall, pH modifies the properties of potato flour films. Film with appropriate performance can be selected based on actual needs, such as the use of packaging materials for food preservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
