In this paper, we study the asymptotic expansion for the homogeneous model of wind‐driven oceanic circulation with the nonslip boundary condition when both of the beta‐plane parameter and the Reynolds number go to infinity. By asymptotic analysis under certain constraints on wind tensor, we derive a formal expansion including the geophysical boundary layer in the large beta‐plane parameter and high Reynolds number limit, from which one sees that the external force, wind tensor, has an important effect on the behavior of the boundary layers. Moreover, when the external force and initial data satisfy certain constraints, to exclude the appearance of strong boundary layers, we construct approximate solutions with steady boundary layers to the homogeneous model of wind‐driven oceanic circulation in the large beta‐plane parameter and high Reynolds number limit. By using an energy method, we obtain the L∞$$ {L}^{\infty } $$‐stability of small perturbation around this approximate solutions, which verifies the validity of the asymptotic expansion of weak boundary layers in the large beta‐plane parameter and high Reynolds number limit. We consider the Schrödinger operator in a bounded domain $ \mathbf{R}^n (n=2,3) $ R n (n = 2 , 3) with Neumann boundary condition. We suppose that this domain contains small deformable inclusions, i.e. regions where the potentials do not have the same values as the exterior medium. Our goal is to construct an asymptotic formula for the case of multiple and simple eigenvalue problems. We find an expansion that highlights the relation between the deformation parameters and the eigenvalues. The problem is devoted to a domain containing a finite number of inhomogeneities. The truncation coefficient is widely utilized in non-global coverage computations of geophysics and geodesy and is always altitude dependent. As the two commonly used calculation methods for truncation coefficients, i.e., the spectral form and the recursive formula, both suffer from decreasing precision caused by high-altitude, leading to slow convergence for the former and numerical instability recursion for the latter. The asymptotic expansion mathematically converges with increasing degree and can precisely compensate for the shortcomings of the two methods. This study introduces asymptotic expansion to accurately compute the truncation coefficient for the spectral gravity forward modeling to a high degree. The evaluation at the whole altitudes and whole integral radii indicates that the proposed method has the following advantages: (i) The calculation precision increases with increasing degree and is altitude independent; (ii) the accurate calculation can be supported by a double-precision format; and (iii) the calculation can be conducted nearly without extra time cost with increasing degree. This paper presents a novel generic asymptotic expansion formula of expectations of multidimensional Wiener functionals through a Malliavin calculus technique. The uniform estimate of the asymptotic expansion is shown under a weaker condition on the Malliavin covariance matrix of the target Wiener functional. In particular, the method provides a tractable expansion for the expectation of an irregular functional of the solution to a multidimensional rough differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index H < 1 / 2 , without using complicated fractional integral calculus for the singular kernel. In a numerical experiment, our expansion shows a much better approximation for a probability distribution function than its normal approximation, which demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. We study the individual behavior of the eigenvalues of the laplacian matrices of the cyclic graph of order n , where one edge has weight α ∈ C , with Re (α) < 0 , and all the others have weights 1. This paper is a sequel of a previous one where we considered Re (α) ∈ [ 0 , 1 ] (Grudsky et al., 2022 [12]). We prove that for Re (α) < 0 and n > Re (α − 1) / Re (α) , one eigenvalue is negative while the others belong to [ 0 , 4 ] and are distributed as the function x ↦ 4 sin 2 ⁡ (x / 2). Additionally, we prove that as n tends to ∞, the outlier eigenvalue converges exponentially to 4 Re (α) 2 / (2 Re (α) − 1). We give exact formulas for half of the inner eigenvalues, while for the others we justify the convergence of Newton's method and fixed-point iteration method. We derive a special form of the -difference equations whose solutions exist in the form of a Dulac series. We find the coefficients of the Dulac series from some algebraic difference equations having a polynomial solution under appropriate conditions. An example is given of a -difference equation which demonstrates the lack of upper bounds for the degrees of these polynomial solutions. We provide an upper bound for the degrees of the polynomial coefficients in terms of the coefficient degrees of the initial segment of the Dulac series. We present an optimal control problem associated to a chemical transportation phenomena in a periodic porous medium. Posing controls on the porous part of the medium (distributed control), we set up a convex minimization problem. The main objective of this article is to characterize an arbitrary control to be an optimal control. We establish a relation between the optimal control and the corresponding adjoint state. At first, we analyse the microscopic description of the controlled system, then we homogenised the system by rigorous two-scale convergence method and periodic unfolding method. This article studies an optimal control problem for the financial investment strategy with random incomes. The investment portfolio is simplified to be composed of a risk-free asset and a risky asset. The price of a risky asset is followed by a constant variance elasticity (CEV) model. We consider any correlation coefficient ρ ∈ [ − 1 , 1 ] between the income risk and the risk of risky asset. By applying the Legendre transformation, dual theory, and asymptotic expansion approach, we obtain an asymptotic strategy for the exponential utility function. We consider a two‐dimensional transmission problem of linear elasticity with voids in a fixed domain Ω−$$ {\Omega}_{-} $$ coated by a curved thin layer Ω+δ$$ {\Omega}_{&#x0002B;}&#x0005E;{\delta } $$. Our aim is to model the effect of the thin layer Ω+δ$$ {\Omega}_{&#x0002B;}&#x0005E;{\delta } $$ on the fixed domain Ω−$$ {\Omega}_{-} $$ by an impedance boundary condition. For that, we use the techniques of asymptotic expansion to approximate the transmission problem by an impedance problem set in the fixed domain Ω−$$ {\Omega}_{-} $$, and we prove an error estimate for the approximate impedance problem. It is known that the generating function of a sequence of Toeplitz matrices may not describe the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the considered matrix sequence in the non‐Hermitian setting. In a recent work, under the assumption that the eigenvalues are real, admitting an asymptotic expansion whose first term is the distribution function, fast algorithms computing all the spectra were proposed in different settings. In the current work, we extend this idea to non‐Hermitian Toeplitz matrices with complex eigenvalues, in the case where the range of the generating function does not disconnect the complex field or the limiting set of the spectra, as the matrix‐size tends to infinity, has one nonclosed analytic arc. For a generating function having a power singularity, we prove the existence of an asymptotic expansion, that can be used as a theoretical base for the respective numerical algorithm. Different generating functions are explored, highlighting different numerical and theoretical aspects; for example, non‐Hermitian and complex symmetric matrix sequences, the reconstruction of the generating function, a consistent eigenvalue ordering, the requirements of high‐precision data types. Through combined applications of the transfer-matrix method and asymptotic expansion technique, we formulate a theory to predict the three-dimensional response of micropolar plates. No ad hoc assumptions regarding through-thickness assumptions of the field variables are made, and the governing equations are two-dimensional, with the displacements and microrotations of the mid-plane as the unknowns. Once the deformation of the mid-plane is solved, a three-dimensional micropolar elastic field within the plate is generated, which is exact up to the second order except in the boundary region close to the plate edge. We consider singularly perturbed operator differential transport equations of a special form in the case where the transport operator acts on space–time variables; a linear operator acting on an additional variable describes the interaction that "scrambles" the solution with respect to that variable. We construct a formal asymptotic expansion of the solution of the Cauchy problem for a singularly perturbed operator differential transport equation with small nonlinearity and weak diffusion in the case of several spatial variables. Under some conditions assumed for these problems, the leading term of the asymptotics is described by a quasilinear parabolic equation. In this paper we study how the expectations of power means behave asymptotically as some relevant parameter approaches infinity and how to approximate them accurately for general nonnegative continuous probability distributions. We derive approximation formulae for such expectations as distribution mean increases, and apply them to some commonly used distributions in statistics and financial mathematics. By numerical computations we demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed formulae which behave well even for smaller sample sizes. AbstractIn this study, we consider the problems of testing for a mean vector and testing the equality of two mean vectors with monotone missing data. We propose new test statistics similar to the simplified Hotelling’s T2-type test statistic for one-sample and two-sample problems under general-step monotone missing data. Approximate upper percentiles of this new statistics are provided by asymptotic expansion along with transformed test statistics based on Bartlett adjustment. Approximate simultaneous confidence intervals for pairwise comparisons among mean vectors are also presented. Furthermore, we investigated the asymptotic behavior of the proposed statistics using a Monte Carlo simulation, and the approximate accuracy of the proposed approximations are provided and discussed. We characterize in a novel manner the physical properties of the low temperature Fermi gas in the degenerate domain as a function of temperature and chemical potential. For the first time we obtain low temperature T results in the domain where several fermions are found within a de Broglie spatial cell. In this regime, the usual high degeneracy Sommerfeld expansion fails. The other known semi-classical Boltzmann domain applies when fewer than one particle is found in the de Broglie cell. We also improve on the understanding of the Sommerfeld expansion in the regime where the chemical potential is close to the mass and also in the high temperature regime. In these calculcations we use a novel characterization of the Fermi distribution allowing the separation of the finite and zero temperature phenomena. We consider for a small parameter > 0 a parabolic convection–diffusion problem with Péclet number of order ( − 1) in a three-dimensional graph-like junction consisting of thin curvilinear cylinders with radii of order () connected through a domain (node) of diameter (). Inhomogeneous Robin type boundary conditions, that involve convective and diffusive fluxes, are prescribed both on the lateral surfaces of the thin cylinders and the boundary of the node. The asymptotic behavior of the solution is studied as → 0 , i.e. when the diffusion coefficients are eliminated and the thin junction is shrunk into a three-part graph connected in a single vertex. A rigorous procedure for the construction of the complete asymptotic expansion of the solution is developed and the corresponding energy and uniform pointwise estimates are proved. Depending on the directions of the limit convective fluxes, the corresponding limit problems (= 0) are derived in the form of first-order hyperbolic differential equations on the one-dimensional branches with novel gluing conditions at the vertex. These generalize the classical Kirchhoff transmission conditions and might require the solution of a three-dimensional cell-like problem associated with the vertex to account for the local geometric inhomogeneity of the node and the physical processes in the node. Functional neurons built from neural circuits are capable of perceiving and processing external signals such as light illumination and magnetic radiation, by converting the physical signals into modulated bioelectric signals called action potential with diverse forms and shapes. Through modulational instability (MI), modulated wave formation and pattern transition are studied in a chain memristive network of 1 0 0 photosensitive neurons. Memristors and photocells are incorporated in a simple FitzHugh–Nagumo neuron to detect and process the external magnetic flux and light illumination. To determine regions of modulated wave formation, linear stability analysis is performed on a nonlinear envelope equation which resulted from the asymptotic expansion of the generic dynamical equations. The growth rate of MI is plotted and the distinct zones of stable/unstable MI are presented. We confirm the analytical result through numerical simulations whereby the initial plane wave solutions lead to the emergence of localized structures with traits of spiking, bursting and chaotic states. High-frequency photocurrent changes orderly localized patterns to chaotic-like patterns while high-frequency magnetic flux promotes pattern transition from bursting to 2-period spiking state and a 4-period spiking state. Numerous novel integral and series representations for Ferrers functions of the first kind (associated Legendre functions on the cut) of arbitrary degree and order, various integral, series and differential relations connecting Ferrers functions of different orders and degrees as well as a uniform asymptotic expansion are derived in this article. Simple proofs of four generating functions for Ferrers functions are given. Addition theorems for P ν - μ tanh α + β are proved by basing on generation functions for three families of hypergeometric polynomials. In this paper, we apply the steepest descent method to the Schläfli-type integral representation of the three-parameter Mittag-Leffler function (well-known as the Prabhakar function). We find the asymptotic expansions of this function for its large parameters with respect to the real and complex saddle points. For each parameter, we separately establish a relation between the variable and parameter of function to determine the leading asymptotic term. We also introduce differentiations of the three-parameter Mittag-Leffler functions with respect to parameters and modify the associated asymptotic expansions for their large parameters. In this paper, a modification of a renewal-reward process with dependent components is mathematically constructed and the stationary characteristics of this process are studied. Stochastic processes with dependent components have rarely been studied in the literature owing to their complex mathematical structure. We partially fill the gap by studying the effect of the dependence assumption on the stationary properties of the process . To this end, first, we obtain explicit formulas for the ergodic distribution and the stationary moments of the process. Then we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the stationary moments of the process by using the basic results of the renewal theory and the Laplace transform method. Based on the analysis, we obtain two-term asymptotic expansions of the stationary moments. Moreover, we present two-term asymptotic expansions for the expectation, variance, and standard deviation of the process . Finally, the asymptotic results obtained are examined in special cases. Formulations of initial-boundary value problems for the system of Maxwell's equations in various quasi-stationary approximations in homogeneous and inhomogeneous conducting media are considered. In the case of weakly inhomogeneous media, asymptotic expansions of solutions to the considered initial-boundary value problems in a parameter characterizing the degree of inhomogeneity of the medium are formulated and substantiated. It is shown that the construction of an asymptotic expansion for the quasi-stationary electromagnetic approximation leads to successively solving independent problems for the quasi-stationary electric and quasi-stationary magnetic approximations in a homogeneous medium. In this paper, we analyze the time‐dependent flow of an incompressible micropolar fluid in a multiple‐pipe system. Motivated by the applications, we assume that the pipes have circular cross‐section and that the ratio between pipes' thickness and its length is small, denoted by the parameter ε$$ \varepsilon $$. Far from the junction, the fluid exhibits different behavior depending on the magnitude of the viscosity coefficients with respect to the small parameter ε$$ \varepsilon $$. Focusing on the critical case described by the strong coupling between velocity and microrotation, the complete asymptotic expansion of the solution (up to an arbitrary order) is built. To improve the accuracy of the asymptotic approximation, we introduce the boundary layer correctors near the pipes' ends and take into account the interior layer correction in the vicinity of the junction as well. This study introduces a novel approach to analyze the stress and displacement fields around blunt notches in bi-material media, focusing on mode III loading conditions. The eigenfunction expansion method is used to derive a simplified yet accurate solution, satisfying the boundary conditions for bi-material blunt V-notches. The robustness of the proposed asymptotic solution is validated through several finite element analyses, encompassing a range of notched geometries such as blunt V-notches, VO-notches, and circular holes. The Sturm–Liouville boundary value problem (SLBVP) stands as a fundamental cornerstone in the realm of mathematical analysis and physical modeling. Also known as the Sturm–Liouville problem (SLP), this paper explores the intricacies of this classical problem, particularly the relationship between its canonical and Liouville normal (Schrödinger) forms. While the conversion from the canonical to Schrödinger form using Liouville's transformation is well known in the literature, the inverse transformation seems to be neglected. Our study attempts to fill this gap by investigating the inverse of Liouville's transformation, that is, given any SLP in the Schrödinger form with some invariant function, we seek the SLP in its canonical form. By closely examining the second Paine–de Hoog–Anderson (PdHA) problem, we argue that retrieving the SLP in its canonical form can be notoriously difficult and can even be impossible to achieve in its exact form. Finding the inverse relationship between the two independent variables seems to be the main obstacle. We confirm this claim by considering four different scenarios, depending on the potential and density functions that appear in the corresponding invariant function. In the second PdHA problem, this invariant function takes a reciprocal quadratic binomial form. In some cases, the inverse Liouville transformation produces an exact expression for the SLP in its canonical form. In this paper, we start from a two dimensional transmission model problem in the framework of couple stress elasticity with voids which is defined in a fixed domain Ω − juxtaposed with a planar thin layer Ω + δ . Based on asymptotic expansions of fundamental solutions, asymptotic classes of functions are introduced and existence and uniqueness of solutions in those classes are established for the equation 퐏 ⁢ (i ⁢ ∂ x) ⁢ u = f in ℝ n . The representability of the Burr distribution as a mixture of Weibull distribution is studied in order to justify its utility for modelling the statistical regularities in extreme values registered in non-stationary flows of informative events. A result of [24] is improved by extending the domain of admissible values of the parameters which provide the representability of the (generalized) Burr distribution as a scale mixture of the Weibull distribution. This result gives an argument in favour of application of the Burr distribution as a model of statistical regularities of extreme values registered within moderate regular time intervals, say, daily (short-term) extremes. In turn, if we are interested in the statistical regularities of the behaviour of the absolute extreme observation over a long period, say, a decade (the long-term extreme), then it can be noted that the daily extreme values form a sample of the Burr-distributed random variables. As is known, the Burr distribution belongs to the domain of max-attraction of the Fréchet distribution. The problem of improving the accuracy of the approximation of the distribution of the absolute extreme by the Fréchet distribution by the construction of an asymptotic expansion for the distribution of the extreme order statistics in the sample of independent identically Burr-distributed random variables is also considered. These results are illustrated by an example of fitting the Burr distribution to the data representing the extreme values of characteristics of the interplanetary magnetic field. We consider a gas of N weakly interacting bosons in the ground state. Such gases exhibit Bose–Einstein condensation. The binding energy is defined as the energy it takes to remove one particle from the gas. In this article, we prove an asymptotic expansion for the binding energy, and compute the first orders explicitly for the homogeneous gas. Multiple testing has been a prominent topic in statistical research. Despite extensive work in this area, controlling false discoveries remains a challenging task, especially when the test statistics exhibit dependence. Various methods have been proposed to estimate the false discovery proportion (FDP) under arbitrary dependencies among the test statistics. One key approach is to transform arbitrary dependence into weak dependence and subsequently establish the strong consistency of FDP and false discovery rate under weak dependence. As a result, FDPs converge to the same asymptotic limit within the framework of weak dependence. However, we have observed that the asymptotic variance of FDP can be significantly influenced by the dependence structure of the test statistics, even when they exhibit only weak dependence. Quantifying this variability is of great practical importance, as it serves as an indicator of the quality of FDP estimation from the data. To the best of our knowledge, there is limited research on this aspect in the literature. In this paper, we aim to fill in this gap by quantifying the variation of FDP, assuming that the test statistics exhibit weak dependence and follow normal distributions. We begin by deriving the asymptotic expansion of the FDP and subsequently investigate how the asymptotic variance of the FDP is influenced by different dependence structures. Based on the insights gained from this study, we recommend that in multiple testing procedures utilizing FDP, reporting both the mean and variance estimates of FDP can provide a more comprehensive assessment of the study's outcomes. This article completes the study of the influence of the intensity parameter α in the boundary condition ε ∂ ν ε u ε − u ε V ε → · ν ε = ε α φ ε given on the boundary of a thin three-dimensional graph-like network consisting of thin cylinders that are interconnected by small domains (nodes) with diameters of order O (ε). Inside of the thin network a time-dependent convection-diffusion equation with high Péclet number of order O (ε − 1) is considered. The novelty of this article is the case of α < 1 , which indicates a strong intensity of physical processes on the boundary, described by the inhomogeneity φ ε (the cases α = 1 and α > 1 were previously studied by the same authors). A complete Puiseux asymptotic expansion is constructed for the solution u ε as ε → 0 , i.e., when the diffusion coefficients are eliminated and the thin network shrinks into a graph. Furthermore, the corresponding uniform pointwise and energy estimates are proved, which provide an approximation of the solution with a given accuracy in terms of the parameter ε. We study a system of equations modeling the dynamic tension of a homogeneous round layer of incompressible perfectly rigid-plastic transversely isotropic material obeying the Mises–Hencky criterion. The upper and lower bases are stress-free, the radial velocity is set on the lateral boundary, and the possibility of thickening or thinning of the layer, simulating formation and further development of a neck, is taken into account. Using the method of asymptotic integration, two characteristic tension modes are identified, that is, relations of dimensionless parameters are determined that necessitate taking into account inertial terms. We study a new class of time-periodic solutions of singularly perturbed systems of reaction–diffusion equations in the case of a fast and a slow equation, which are usually called Tikhonov-type systems. The paper provides a precise error estimate for an asymptotic expansion of a certain stochastic control problem related to relative entropy minimization. In particular, it is shown that the expansion error depends on the regularity of functionals on path space. An efficient numerical scheme based on a weak approximation with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to implement the asymptotic expansion in multidimensional settings. We present an asymptotic method to compute efficiently second-order telegraph equations with high-frequency extrinsic oscillations. This method is based on asymptotic expansions in inverse powers of the oscillatory parameter. Each term of this asymptotic expansion is the sum of at most two coefficients. Each coefficient is derived either by recursion or by solving a non-oscillatory problem. This leads to method which exhibit improved performance with growing frequency of oscillation. The present work is devoted to the eigenvalue asymptotic expansion of the Toeplitz matrix Tn(a), whose generating function a is complex-valued and has a power singularity at one point. As a consequence, Tn(a) is non-Hermitian and we know that in this setting, the eigenvalue computation is a nontrivial task for large sizes. First we follow the work of Bogoya, Böttcher, Grudsky, and Maximenko and deduce a complete asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues. In a second step, we apply matrixless algorithms, in the spirit of the work by Ekström, Furci, Garoni, Serra-Capizzano et al., for computing those eigenvalues. Since the inner and extreme eigenvalues have different asymptotic behaviors, we worked on them independently and combined the results to produce a high precision global numerical and matrixless algorithm. The numerical results are very precise, and the computational cost of the proposed algorithms is independent of the size of the considered matrices for each eigenvalue, which implies a linear cost when the entire spectrum is computed. From the viewpoint of real-world applications, we emphasize that the class under consideration includes the matrices stemming from the numerical approximation of fractional diffusion equations. We introduce an efficient numerical method for second-order linear ODEs whose solution may vary between highly oscillatory and slowly changing over the solution interval. In oscillatory regions the solution is generated via a nonoscillatory phase function that obeys the nonlinear Riccati equation. We propose a defect correction iteration that gives an asymptotic series for such a phase function; this is numerically approximated on a Chebyshev grid with a small number of nodes. For analytic coefficients we prove that each iteration, up to a certain maximum number, reduces the residual by a factor of order of the local frequency. The algorithm adapts both the stepsize and the choice of method, switching to a conventional spectral collocation method away from oscillatory regions. In numerical experiments we find that our proposal outperforms other state-of-the-art oscillatory solvers, most significantly at low to intermediate frequencies and at low tolerances, where it may use up to 106 times fewer function evaluations. Lattice Green's functions (LGFs) are fundamental solutions to discretized linear operators, and as such they are a useful tool for solving discretized elliptic PDEs on domains that are unbounded in one or more directions. The majority of existing numerical solvers that make use of LGFs rely on a second-order discretization and operate on domains with free-space boundary conditions in all directions. Under these conditions, fast expansion methods are available that enable precomputation of 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional (3D) LGFs in linear time, avoiding the need for brute-force multidimensional quadrature of numerically unstable integrals. Here we focus on higherorder discretizations of the Laplace operator on domains with more general boundary conditions, by (1) providing an algorithm for fast and accurate evaluation of the LGFs associated with highorder dimension-split centered finite differences on unbounded domains, and (2) deriving closed-form expressions for the LGFs associated with both dimension-split and Mehrstellen discretizations on domains with one unbounded dimension. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate that these techniques provide LGF evaluations with near machine-precision accuracy, and that the resulting LGFs allow for numerically consistent solutions to high-order discretizations of the Poisson's equation on fully or partially unbounded 3D domains. This work, which can be considered as a small monograph, is devoted to the study of two-and three-dimensional boundary-value problems for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with frequently alternating type of boundary conditions. The main goal is to construct asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the considered problems. Asymptotic expansions are constructed on the basis of original combinations of asymptotic analysis methods: the method of compatibility of asymptotic expansions, the boundary layer method, and the multiscale method. We perform the analysis of the coefficients of the formally constructed asymptotic series. For strictly periodic and locally periodic alternation of the boundary conditions, the described approach allows one to construct complete asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. In the case of nonperiodic alternation and the averaged third boundary condition, sufficiently weak conditions on the alternation structure are obtained, under which it is possible to construct the first corrections in the asymptotics for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. These conditions include in consideration a wide class of different cases of nonperiodic alternation. With further, very essential weakening of the conditions on the structure of alternation, it is possible to obtain two-sided estimates for the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues of the perturbed problem. Then, assuming that the 2D Kolmogorov theorem and some extension for d > 2 hold, we establish several regimes depending on the commensurability of the rotation vectors ζ (x) for which the expansion of X is valid. Moreover, we prove that for any 2D flow with a non vanishing smooth b inducing a unique incommensurable rotation vector ξ , the fine expansion holds in R 2 if, and only if, ξ 1 / ξ 2 is a Diophantine number. The case where ξ is commensurable is also investigated. Finally, several examples illustrate the different results, including the case of a vanishing b which blows up the asymptotic expansion in some direction.
