Method: It is a hospital based cross sectional study done by Simple random sampling consisting of 200 newborns and their respective mothers delivered 15 months. Ballard score will be used to calculate the gestational age New Bellard’ Score. Post-delivery methods of determining gestational age in premature infants have been developed and validated. The New Ballard Exam allows for gestational assessment in infants as early as 20 weeks' gestation and utilizes parameters of physical (6 criteria) and neurological (6 criteria) maturity to reach a score that correlates with gestational age. Results: LBW babies include preterm babies (17.5%) and term and post-term SGA babies (18.2%). Neonatal and IMR in these babies is very high. In the present study LBW rate was 22%. Regarding IUGR babies much work can be done to reduce the rate. It was found that 13.5% of mothers were below 20 years.1% of mothers were illiterate. Mean birth weight in primi was less and LBW rate was high. 12% of mothers were anemic. Mean maternal hemoglobin was 11.0%. Maternal anemia strongly influences mean birth weight and LBW rate. Mother receiving minimum 4 ANC visits was 99%, and still 12% of mothers were anemic. Incidence of macrosomia was high in diabetic group compared to non-diabetic group. Neonatal mortality is high in LGA babies. Conclusion: In the present study 15.5% of babies were SGA babies. Symmetric IUGR babies contribute >95% of total IUGR in this study. Background: Controversy surrounds the impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on fetal development. This study aimed to investigate levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in umbilical cord blood from Şanlıurfa mothers in Turkey, exploring associations with gestational age and birth weight. Methods: Participants included voluntary mothers pregnant with a single fetus, providing details on maternal factors. Cord blood samples were collected immediately after delivery. Samples were extracted with a modified QuEChERS method, and OCPs (17 pesticides) and PCBs (11 congeners) compound levels were analyzed with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry. Detection frequencies and levels of POPs by single pollutant type and pollutant groups were calculated and compared according to gestational duration and birth weight. We used partial least squares discriminant analysis to identify the key chemicals and distinguish their respective statuses. Results: Among 120 infants, 35 were preterm but appropriate for gestational age, 35 were term but small for gestational age (SGA), and 50 were term and appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Beta HCH, Oxy-Chlordan, and PCB 28, were not detected in cord blood samples. Half of the samples contained at least 4 types of OCPs, with a median OCP level of 38.44 ng/g. Among the DDT, 2,4'-DDE was found at the highest concentration in cord plasma samples. The PCB congeners with a frequency exceeding 50% were ranked in the following order: 151, 149, 138, 146. The median level of ∑PCBs was 5.93 ng/g. Male infants born at term with SGA status exhibited lower levels of ∑DDTs, ∑OCPs compared to male infants born preterm or at term with AGA status. Di-ortho-substituted PCBs and hexachlorinated PCBs were higher in male infants born at term with SGA status than male infants born preterm with AGA status. Conclusion: Overall, exposure to DDT and PCBs demonstrates varying effects depending on gestational duration and birth weight, with exposure levels also differing by gender. This underscores the necessity for studies across diverse populations that investigate the combined effects of multiple pollutant exposures on gestational age, birth weight, and gender simultaneously. Altered methylation patterns of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-axis genes in small for gestational age (SGA) have been reported in different populations. In the present study, we analyzed the methylation status of IGF-axis genes in the placenta of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and SGA neonates of South Indian women. Placental samples were collected from AGA (n = 40) and SAG (n = 40) neonates. The methylation of IGF-axis genes promoter was analyzed using MS-PCR. IGF2, H19, IGF1, and IGFR1 genes promoter methylation was 2.5, 1.5, 5, and 7.5% lower in SGA compared to AGA, respectively. Co-methylation of IGF-axis genes promoter was 40% and 20% in AGA and SGA, respectively. IGF-axis gene promoter methylation significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the levels of IGFBP3 protein, birth weight, mitotic index, gestational weeks, and IGFR1 and IGFR2 gene expression. Purpose: The purpose of this prospective observational study was to assess the effect of the nutritional status of pregnant mothers on the birth weight of their new-borns. Material and methods: This study was a prospective observational study of 500 pregnant women registering at an antenatal clinic in GMH Rewa from January 2021 to June 2022. The study participants were followed up at their 2nd visit between 24th and 28th weeks and at their 3rd visit at the time of delivery. Anthropometric, dietary, and haematological parameters were obtained at each visit. Results: Among the 203 women, 140 (68.93%) gave birth to babies whose weight was appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies, and 63 (31.03%) gave birth to babies whose weight was less than expected for gestational age (SGA) babies. The present study has shown an association between low maternal BMI, low weight gain, inadequate IFA intake, inadequate nutrient intake, inadequate protein intake, inadequate calorie intake, low haemoglobin count during pregnancy, and low birth weight babies. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the significance of a healthy diet and nutrition throughout pregnancy because they directly and favourably affect the newborn’s weight and overall health. Birth weight is statistically significant and positively correlated with maternal iron and folic acid supplementation, particularly blood iron levels. The potential benefits of nutrition and iron-folic acid supplementation, as well as the identification of their inadequacies, can support low-cost treatments intended to lower the incidence of SGA. IGF-axis and mitotic capacity of cells play a vital role in fetal growth. We compared IGF1, IGF2, and IGFBP3 protein levels, mitotic indices, IGFR1 and IGFR2 mRNA expression in appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and small for gestational age (SGA) neonates of Indian women. Cord blood (n = 80) and placental samples (n = 40) were collected from AGA and SGA neonates. Plasma IGF1, IGF2, and IGFBP3 proteins were measured by ELISA. IGFR1 and IGFR2 mRNA expression in the placenta were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Cord blood was cultured in vitro and mitotic index was obtained. IGF1 (p = 1), and IGF2 (p = 0.69) protein levels did not differ, whereas IGFBP3 (p = 0.02) was significantly less in SGA compared to AGA neonates. Down-regulation of IGFR1 (3.9-folds) and IGFR2 (2.8-folds) mRNA and reduced mitotic index of lymphocytes was observed in SGA (p = 0.001) compared to AGA neonates. Objective  We examined the effects of maternal hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) on the mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (BW ≤1,500 g) based on their intrauterine growth status and gestational age (GA). Study Design  We included singleton VLBW infants born at <32 weeks' gestation registered in the Neonatal Research Network Japan database. The composite outcomes including death, cerebral palsy (CP), and developmental delay (DD) at 3 years of age were retrospectively compared among three groups: appropriate for GA (AGA) infants of mothers with and without HDP (H-AGA and N-AGA) and small for GA (SGA) infants of mothers with HDP (H-SGA). The adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) stratified by the groups of every two gestational weeks were calculated after adjusting for the center, year of birth, sex, maternal age, maternal diabetes, antenatal steroid use, clinical chorioamnionitis, premature rupture of membranes, non-life-threatening congenital anomalies, and GA. Results  Of 19,323 eligible infants, outcomes were evaluated in 10,192 infants: 683 were H-AGA, 1,719 were H-SGA, and 7,790 were N-AGA. Between H-AGA and N-AGA, no significant difference was observed in the risk for death, CP, or DD in any GA groups. H-AGA had a lower risk for death, CP, or DD than H-SGA in the 24 to 25 weeks group (AOR: 0.434, 95% CI: 0.202–0.930). The odds for death, CP, or DD of H-SGA against N-AGA were found to be higher in the 24 to 25 weeks (AOR: 2.558, 95% CI: 1.558–3.272) and 26 to 27 weeks (AOR: 1.898, 95% CI: 1.427–2.526) groups, but lower in the 30 to 31 weeks group (AOR: 0.518, 95% CI: 0.335–0.800). Conclusion  There was a lack of follow-up data; however, the outcomes of liveborn preterm VLBW infants of mothers with HDP depended on their intrauterine growth status and GA at birth. Key Points The effects of HDP on preterm low birth weight infants need to be further examined. The outcomes were not different between AGA infants with and without maternal HDP. Background: Despite the limited evidence, accelerated early postnatal growth (EPG) is commonly believed to benefit neurodevelopment for term-born infants, especially those small for gestational age.Objectives: To investigate the existence of critical time windows in the association of EPG with neurodevelopment, considering birth size groups.Study Design: In the French ELFE birth cohort, 12,854 term-born neonates were classified as small, appropriate or large for gestational age (SGA, AGA, LGA, respectively). Parents reported their child's development by using the Child Development Inventory (CDI-score) at age 12 months and the MacArthur-Bates Development Inventory (MAB-score; 100 score units) assessing language ability at age 24 months. Predictions of individual weight, body mass index (BMI), length, and head circumference (HC) from birth to age 24 months were obtained from repeated measurements fitted with the Jenss-Bayley mixed-effects model. For each infant, conditional gains (CG) in these growth parameters were generated at four-time points (3, 6, 12 and 24 months) representing specific variations in growth parameters during 0-3, 3-6, 6-12, 12-24 months, independent of previous measures. Using multivariable linear regression models, we provided the estimate differences of the neurodevelopmental scores according to variation of each growth parameter CG, by birth size group.Results: For SGA infants, the MAB-score differed by 5.8 (95% confidence interval [CI] -0.2, 11.8), 6.7 (95% CI -0.1, 13.3), and 9.7 (95% CI 1.9, 17.5) score units when CG in BMI, weight, and HC at 3 months varied from -2 to 1 standard deviation, respectively. For all infants, MAB-score was linearly and positively associated with length conditional gains at 12 months, with stronger magnitude for SGA infants. Results for the CDI-score were overall consistent with those for MAB-score.Conclusions: For term-born SGA infants, moderate catch-up in HC, BMI and weight within the first 3 months of life may benefit later neurodevelopment, which could guide clinicians to monitor EPG. Introduction: To assess the impact of gestational age at term on the association between cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) and operative delivery for intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC) and prognostic performance of CPR to predict operative delivery for IFC. Material and methods: This was a retrospective cohort study including 2052 singleton pregnancies delivered between 37+0 and 41+6 weeks of gestation in a single tertiary referral center over an 8‐year period. CPR was measured within 1 week of delivery. IFC was defined as the presence of persistent pathological cardiotocography pattern or the combination of pathological cardiotocography pattern and fetal scalp pH < 7.20. Operative delivery included instrumental vaginal delivery and cesarean section. Pregnancies were grouped according to birthweight (small for gestational age [SGA, birthweight <10th centile] and appropriate for gestational age [AGA, birthweight 10th–90th centile]) and gestational age by week at delivery. Rates of operative delivery were compared between the subgroups. Prognostic value of CPR was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: Of the study cohort, 308 (15%) had a CPR <10th centile, 374 (18%) operative delivery for IFC, and 298 (15%) were SGA at birth. Overall, the rates of operative delivery for IFC were higher in the low CPR group both in SGA (35% vs. 22%; p = 0.023) and in AGA (23% vs. 16%; p = 0.007). According to gestational age by week at delivery, fetuses with low CPR showed higher rates of operative delivery for IFC with advancing gestational age, mainly in pregnancies delivered at 40 weeks (54% vs. 23%; p = 0.004) and at 41 weeks (60% vs. 19%; p = 0.010) for SGA and at 41 weeks (39% vs. 20%; p = 0.001) for AGA. The predictive value of CPR remained stable throughout term and was poor both in SGA and in AGA. Conclusions: Both SGA and AGA fetuses with low CPR showed higher rates of operative delivery for IFC at term with advancing gestational age. Prognostic value of CPR throughout term was poor. Background & objectives: A etiologically symmetric and asymmetric small for gestational age (SGA) infants are two distinct entities. In view of absence of longitudinal information on growth pattern of skinfold thicknesses (SFTs) among Indian infants, this study was conducted to assess the auxological dynamics of SFTs (sub-cutaneous fat) of symmetric and asymmetric SGA infants. Methods: Triceps, sub-scapular, biceps, mid-axillary and anterior thigh SFTs among full-term, 100 symmetric SGA, 100 asymmetric SGA and 100 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants were measured at one, three, six, nine and 12 months. Ponderal Index (PI) was used to categorize infants into symmetric SGA (PI ≥2.2 g/cm3) and asymmetric SGA (PI <2.2 g/cm³). Intra-group (symmetric vs. asymmetric), inter-group (SGA vs. AGA) and gender differences were quantified. Results: SFTs among symmetric, asymmetric SGA infants increased to attain peak by six months. Maximum fat deposition in SGA infants was noticed for triceps, minimum for mid-axillary SFT. Mean triceps and sub-scapular skinfolds were measured higher in symmetric SGA than in asymmetric infants. SGA infants had significantly (P≤0.05) thinner SFTs than AGA. Growth velocity for SFTs, among symmetric and asymmetric SGA, was measured maximum between one and three months, threreafter it declined and relatively, steepness of fall was maximum for mid-axillary SFT followed by sub-scapular SFT. Interpretation & conclusions: Thinner SFTs obtained for symmetric and asymmetric SGA as compared to AGA infants reveal their compromised adiposity and nutritional status. Comparatively, higher SFTs in symmetric than in asymmetric SGA infants appear to suggest that the former have a tendency to accumulate more fat, than the latter during infancy. Introduction: This study investigated whether fetal growth deceleration in term, appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) fetuses is associated with placental insufficiency and nonreassuring fetal heart rate (NRFHR) at birth. Methods: In this prospective study, 246 low-risk, singleton pregnancies at term with AGA fetuses were recruited. Correlation between decreased growth velocity (decline in estimated fetal weight [EFW] percentile), low EFW (EFWQ1 = latest EFW between 11 and 25% percentiles), umbilical artery (UA) pulsatility index (PI), middle cerebral artery (MCA) PI, and cerebro-placental ratio (CPR) with cesarean and instrumental deliveries due to NRFHR were tested. Results: The median change between fetal weight estimates (percentiles/week) was +0.49% (95% CI: −4 to +5%). Ten percent had decreased EFW percentile >3.5%/week. Fetal growth velocity/week was associated with MCA (r = 0.21, p < 0.001) and CPR (r = 0.24, p < 0.001) and inversely correlated with UA PI (r = −0.28, p < 0.001). NRFHR and cesarean section (CS) rates due to NRFHR were associated with decreased growth velocity, EFWQ1, and low CPR. The combination of abnormal CPR with decreased growth velocity occurred in 12 pregnancies, of which 5 (42%) had urgent CS due to NRFHR. The combination of abnormal CPR with EFWQ1 occurred in 9 pregnancies, of which 4 (44%) had urgent CS due to NRFHR. These combinations increased the likelihood ratio of CS due to NRFHR two-fold (8.41; 2.54–24.5) but did not significantly alter the number needed to treat by elective CS (3.78–4.68). Conclusion: Fetal growth velocity, EFW between 10 and 25th percentiles (EFWQ1), and abnormal CPR improves prediction of unplanned CS due to NRFHR among term AGA fetuses. Objective: The study aimed to determine the frequency of hypoglycemia in low birth weight neonates during the first 24 hours of life after birth. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 1st March 2016 to 31st August 2016 in the NICU and postnatal ward of POF Hospital, Wah Cantt. All the babies with birth weight less than 2.5 kg including preterm and term were included in the study. After the aseptic measure blood, sugar was checked and a value less than 45 mg/dl was labelled as hypoglycemia. Results: Out of 96 neonates, 51 (53%) were male and 45 (47%) were female. The minimum weight of the patient was 1.6kg and the maximum was 2.40 kg. Hypoglycemia was noted in 49 (51%) babies after 2 hours of birth whereas 36 (37.5%) had hypoglycemia at 4 hours and 13 (13.5 %) had at 24 hours. 68 (70.8%) babies included in the study were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 28 (29.1%) babies were small for gestational age (SGA). After 2 hours of birth, hypoglycemia was present more in SGA babies i.e.20 (71.4%) as compared to AGA babies i.e. 29 (42.6%) which had statistical significance also (p-value 0.01). Conclusion: Neonatal hypoglycemia is a well-recognized complication in newborns and low birth weight infants are more susceptible to hypoglycemia. To characterize and compare sex hormone concentrations, and uterine and ovarian volumes in adolescent girls born small for gestational age (SGA) who had experienced catch-up growth and girls born at a size appropriate for gestational age (AGA), and to investigate the association between these parameters and glucose metabolism, perinatal factors, and early growth. A prospective, longitudinal, observational study from birth until adolescence. Mean age at final assessment was 12.7 ± 0.1 years. We followed 55 girls (20 SGA, 35 AGA). Sex hormone concentrations (gonadotropins, estradiol, testosterone, and sex hormone binding globulin) were analyzed, and the oral glucose tolerance test conducted. Uterine and ovarian sizes were assessed using pelvic ultrasound. Uterine and ovarian volumes were smaller in SGA-born compared with AGA-born girls (P =.013 and P =.039, respectively). SGA girls had lower sex hormone binding globulin levels (P =.039) and higher testosterone levels (P =.003), free androgen index (P <.001), and glycemia 2 hours post glucose load (P =.005) compared with AGA-born girls. Birth weight and early infancy height velocity explained 37.4% of variation in ovarian volume (P =.004), and body mass index at birth, increase in peripheral skinfold thickness during second year of life, and early childhood height velocity explained 43.2% of variation in testosterone levels in adolescence (P =.006). SGA-born girls who experienced catch-up growth remain at risk of biochemical hyperandrogenism in adolescence, and have reduced uterine and ovarian volumes, which might influence future reproductive function. Introduction: Zinc deficiency is very much prevalent among pregnant women in developing countries. Zinc is required to maintain normal structure and function of multiple enzymes including those that are involved in foetal growth. Zinc deficiency increases risk of baby being born preterm, low birth weight, small for gestational age (SGA). Aims and Objectives: To compare serum zinc levels in small for gestational age babies with respect to appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Material and Methods: Out of total 200 newborn, hundred SGA newborn comprised the study group and hundred AGA newborn comprised the control group. Cord blood sample was collected immediately after birth and zinc levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Results: The mean (±SD) serum zinc levels of study and control groups were 56.8 ± 40.6 μg/dl and 107.4 ± 72 μg/dl respectively and difference between two groups were found to be statistically significant. The mean serum zinc levels of preterm SGA group and term SGA group were 46.26 ± 22.54 μg/dl and 63.35 ± 47.47μg/dl respectively. Statistically significant difference was found in mean serum zinc levels between the two groups. Conclusion: SGA neonates have significant zinc deficiency as compared to AGA neonates. This zinc deficiency is even more pronounced in SGA newborns that are born preterm. This warrants the future investigation and necessary intervention on zinc supplementation during pregnancy and to preterm and SGA babies for better maternal and child health outcomes. Aim: This meta-analysis evaluates the use of cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) in predicting adverse perinatal outcome.Methods: An electronic search of PubMed, Embase, Google scholar, Cochrane Library and Up-to-Date was done using variations of 'cerebroplacental ratio' and 'cerebroumbilical ratio'. We included studies where CPR was measured and postpartum outcomes were available. Selected articles were evaluated for quality of study methodology using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and aggregate statistics for relative risks, odds ratios and 95% confidence interval were calculated.Results: Data from 66,392 patients in 47 studies was extracted. There were 25 prospective, 17 retrospective and 5 case-control studies. Data on each obstetric or perinatal outcome was separately analysed. When analysing the prospective data, it showed abnormal CPR can predict the need for operative delivery due to foetal distress [RR: 2.52, 95%CI: 2.10-3.02; I2 = 65.78, P < 0.001], low pH [RR: 2.19, 95%CI: 1.01-4.75; I2 = 70.26, P = 0.005] and low Apgar score [RR: 2.05, 95%CI: 1.39-3.03; I2 = 37.15, P = 0.10], foetal or neonatal demise [RR: 2.49, 95%CI: 1.00-6.20], as well as NICU admission [RR: 2.23, 95%CI: 1.84-2.70; I2 48.53, P = 0.14].The retrospective data showed a statistically significant correlation in all outcomes but the low pH.Conclusion: Our meta-analysis shows that CPR can be used to identify foetuses with higher risk of operative delivery due to foetal distress, low Apgar score, NICU admission, neonatal morbidity as well as stillbirth and neonatal death rates. Background: The current treatment approach in patent ductus arteriosus suggests the identification of high-risk infants that may benefit the most from treatment. Small for gestational age infants are a high-risk population in which the treatment approach to the patent ductus arteriosus and outcomes have not been described.Aim: To compare the patent ductus arteriosus treatment approach and outcomes in small for gestational age and appropriate for gestational age infants.Study Design: Retrospective analysis of infants born between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2015 at <33 weeks' GA and admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) part of the Canadian Neonatal Network.Results: 595 of 2507 small for gestational age infants (23.7%) and 4714 of 20,002 appropriate for gestational age infants (23.6%) had a patent ductus arteriosus. The patent ductus arteriosus treatment approach (conservative, medical, surgical) was similar in both groups. Small for gestational age infants with and without a patent ductus arteriosus had increased risk of the composite outcome of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (aOR 3.40; 95% CI 2.73, 4.24; and aOR 2.72; 95% CI 2.24, 3.31) respectively.Conclusions: Patent ductus arteriosus management did not differ between small for gestational age and appropriate for gestational age infants. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of New Ballard Score (NBS) in small-for-gestational age (SGA) neonates.Methodology: Neonates born at 35-40 weeks of gestation were included if accurate obstetric gestation estimate was available and birth weight was <10th percentile for gestation. Gestation-matched appropriate-for-gestational-age neonates were enrolled as controls. Gestation derived from NBS was compared with gestation calculated from last menstrual period.Results: Gestational age estimated by NBS was significantly higher in SGA neonates (mean difference: 0.7 weeks). Neuromuscular component score was similar but physical component score was significantly higher in SGA neonates. Reanalysis after reducing score of 4 to 3 of SGA babies for skin and plantar crease physical parameters showed overestimation of gestational age decreased to 0.4 weeks.Conclusions: The physical parameters of NBS overestimate gestation in SGA neonates. Cross-sectional studies suggest that premature birth and low birth weight may both be associated with low peak bone mass. We followed bone traits in preterm individuals and controls for 27 years and examined the effects of birth weight relative to gestational age [stratified as small for gestational age (SGA) or appropriate for gestational (AGA)] on adult bone mineral density (BMD). We measured distal forearm BMC (g/cm) and BMD (g/cm(2)) with single-photon absorptiometry (SPA) in 46 preterm children (31 AGA and 15 SGA) at mean age 10.1 years (range 4-16) and in 84 healthy age-matched children. The measurements were repeated 27 years later with the same SPA apparatus but then also with dual energy absorptiometry and peripheral computed tomography (pQCT). Preterm individuals were shorter (p = 0.03) in adulthood than controls. Preterm AGA individuals had similar BMC and BMD height-adjusted Z-scores in adulthood compared to controls. Preterm SGA individuals had lower distal forearm BMC and BMD height-adjusted Z-scores in adulthood than both controls and preterm AGA individuals. Preterm SGA individuals had lower gain from childhood to adulthood in distal forearm BMC height-adjusted Z-scores than controls (p = 0.03). The deficits in preterm SGA individuals in adulthood were also captured by DEXA in height-adjusted femoral neck (FN) BMC Z-score and height-adjusted FN BMD Z-score and by pQCT in tibial cross-sectional area (CSA) Z-score and stress strain index (SSI) Z-score, where all measurements were lower than controls (all p values <0.05). Preterm SGA individuals are at increased risk of reaching low adult bone mass, at least partly due to a deficit in the accrual of bone mineral during growth. Background/Aims: Growth hormone (GH) treatment is approved for short children born SGA but not for AGA. Our aim was to study the effect of GH in short VLBW SGA and AGA children. Methods: The study group comprised 44 prepubertal short children with a birth weight <1,500 g: 27 AGA (12 females) and 17 SGA (6 females). Mean values at GH start were (AGA, SGA): age 6.94, 7.14 years, height standard deviation score (SDS) -3.33, -3.33, and GH dose (mean ± SD) 54 ± 12, 51 ± 11 µg/kg/day. Arm andcalf cross-sectional muscle area using peripheral quantitative computer tomography, body composition data using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and body impedance assessment, maximal isometric grip force and skin fold thickness, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were measured at the start and after 12 months of GH. Results: At GH start, both groups had similar characteristics with low height, weight, height velocity, muscle mass, bone thickness and content. The first year of GH treatment led to changes in muscle area SDS (AGA, SGA) -2.23 to -0.73 (p = 0.0010), -3.18 to -1.17 (p = 0.060) (AGA vs. SGA p = 0.61), fat area SDS -1.06 to -1.83 (p = 0.054), -0.62 to -1.75 (p = 0.12) (AGA vs. SGA p = 0.65) and height velocity SDS -0.0015 to 4.2 (p < 0.0001), -0.18 to 3.3 (p < 0.0001) (AGA vs. SGA p = 0.36). Conclusions: Growth, muscle and fat mass are similarly impaired in short prepubertal AGA and SGA VLBW children. The children born AGA show a similar or better response to GH compared to those born SGA. Objective: Placental hormones such as resistin, adiponectin, ghrelin and leptin are known to have considerable role in fetal growth and there are some articles published in this area recently. Nevertheless there is a shortage of data showing association between resistin level and fetal growth; that was why we decided to conduct a study to evaluate this association. Methods: This study was approved by ethic committee of pediatric health research center and research vice chancellor of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. In this case-control study we measured the insulin, glucose and resistin in the cord blood of neonates with gestational age of 37 weeks or more in Al Zahra tertiary hospital from March 2011 to March 2012. Thirty-nine appropriate for gestation age (AGA) neonates and 41 small for gestation age (SGA) neonates were studied. Findings: The umbilical cord blood resistin level was not found to have significant correlation with the type of delivery [normal vaginal delivery (NVD) or cesarean-section (C-S)], neonate's gender, maternal age or body mass index (BMI). There was no significant difference in the levels of Insulin and glucose between AGA and SGA groups. Resistin level of blood cord in AGA group was 613.76±180.10 (range: 132.6-983.80 ng/ml) and in SGA group it was 1303.47±537.07 (range: 800.9-3001 ng/ml) (P<0.001). Neonates' weight in AGA group was 3162.82±407.92 g and in SGA group it was 2425.85±32.84 g (P<0.001). Conclusion: In this study resistin level had reverse correlation with fetal weight in term neonates. The SGA neonates with growth insufficiency have higher resistin levels in their cord blood than AGA neonates with same gestational age. Objective To determine whether the recently published A global reference for fetal-weight and birthweight percentiles (Global Reference) improves small- ( SGA), appropriate- ( AGA), and large-for-gestational-age ( LGA) definitions in predicting infant mortality. Design Population-based cohort study. Setting The US Linked Livebirth and Infant Death records between 1995 and 2004. Population Singleton births with birthweight >500 g born at 24-41 weeks of gestation. Methods We compared infant mortality rates of SGA, AGA, and LGA infants classified by three different references: the Global Reference; a commonly used birthweight reference; and Hadlock's ultrasound reference. Main outcome measures Infant mortality rates. Results Among 33 997 719 eligible liveborn singleton births, 25% of preterm and 9% of term infants were classified differently for SGA, AGA, and LGA by the Global Reference and the birthweight reference. The Global Reference indicated higher mortality rates in preterm SGA and preterm LGA infants than the birthweight reference. The mortality rate was considerably higher in infants classified as preterm SGA by the Global Reference but not by the birthweight reference, compared with the corresponding infants classified by the birthweight reference but not by the Global Reference (105.7 versus 12.9 per 1000, RR 8.17, 95% CI 7.38-9.06). Yet, the differences in mortality rates were much smaller in term infants than in preterm infants. Black infants had a particularly higher mortality rate than other races in AGA and LGA preterm and term infants. Conclusions In respect to the commonly used birthweight reference, the Global Reference increases the identification of infant deaths by improved classification of abnormal newborn size at birth, and these advantages were more obvious in preterm than in term infants. Purpose: To compare the incidence of type retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in patients small for gestational age (SGA) and in patients appropriate for gestational age (AGA) in a developing country. Material and Method: We included in this study infants (n=l62) with gestational age (GA) ≤34 weeks who were screened for ROP in a neonatal intensive care unit between June 2007 and December 2011 and were followed up until the retina was completely vascularized or ROP was regressed. Type 1 ROP was defined according to the ETROP study. To describe the incidence of type 1 ROP, data were analyzed in two main groups: (A) SGA-group and (B) AGA-group. SGA was defined as birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age. GA in weeks, birth weight (BW) in grams (g), ROP at any stage, type 1 ROP, and post menstrual age (PMA) at type 1 ROP were evaluated for the two groups. Retrospective review of records was performed. Results: BW (in mean±SD) was 832.45±131.74 g in group A and 962.97±351.47 g in group B; GA (in mean±SD) was 29.27±2.4 weeks in group A and 27.36±2.8 weeks in group B, with significant difference between the groups (p = 0.001 vs. p<0.0001). Overall incidence of any-stage ROP was 41.2% in group A and 45.9% in group B, while type 1 ROP was 17.6% in group A and 15.3% in group B. PMA at type 1 ROP detection was 35±3.6 weeks in group A and 33.83±2.7 weeks in group B, without significant difference (p = 0.57 vs. 0.44 vs. 0.23). In group A, the earliest diagnosis of type 1 ROP was 31 weeks PMA, the latest diagnosis was 43 weeks PMA. In group B, the earliest diagnosis of type 1 ROP was 32 weeks PMA, the latest diagnosis was 42 weeks PMA. Discussion: In groups A and B, larger infants may develop type 1 ROP and require treatment. Background: Rapid early ponderal growth is associated with adverse metabolic risks in young adults born at term. Aim: To determine whether there are differences in body composition, resting energy expenditure (REE) and metabolic variables between preterm children born with very low birth weight (VLBW) either appropriate (AGA) or small (SGA) for gestational age and whether these differences are related to an early period of weight gain. Methods: 67 VLBW preterm (40 AGA, 27 SGA). Body composition by DEXA, REE by indirect calorimetry and blood sampling at age 6.7 ± 0.5 years. Results: VLBW SGA children were lighter, shorter, had a lower waist and hip circumference, HDL cholesterol and lipid oxidation rates than their AGA counterparts (adjusted for age, sex and BMI). Birth weight correlated negatively with total body and trunk fat mass. In a multivariate linear regression analysis, we found a positive association between weight gain in the first 3 months of life and total and trunk fat at age 6 years and a reciprocal association with REE at age 6 years. In contrast, the weight gain rate at 6-9 months of life was associated with higher REE and lipid oxidation rates at 6 years. A higher weight gain rate at 9-12 months was associated with a higher lean mass at 6 years. Background: Fullterm small-for-gestational-age children (SGAs) are known for their ability to catch up on growth. Nevertheless, increased risk of growth restriction remains. Evidence on preterm SGA children's growth is lacking. Objective: To determine absolute gains in height and weight, relative growth, and growth restriction in preterm SGAs from 0 to 4 years and how prematurity and SGA status affect these measures. Design/Methods: Community-based cohort study, n = 1,648 preterm-born (gestational age <36 weeks, 57 SGA) and 605 term-born (12 SGA). We defined SGA as a birth weight less than -2 SD (P 2.3) compared to counterparts matched for gestational age. Height, weight, and head circumference were obtained from medical records and translated to z-scores. We defined growth restriction as height or weight less than -2 SD compared to fullterm appropriate-for-gestational-age children (AGAs). Results: Absolute height and weight gains were similar, but the relative growth of preterms and fullterms differed. Preterm AGAs and fullterm SGAs, although not reaching it, caught up towards the fullterm AGA median (z-scores at 4 years: -0.3 to -1.0). By contrast, preterm SGA children's z-scores were still -1.4 to -1.7. Head circumference growth was less affected by prematurity and SGA birth (z-scores at 1 year: 0.1 to -0.7). Catch-up growth mainly took place during infancy. 30-39% of all preterm SGAs showed growth restriction at 4 years. Objective: to estimate the association between intrauterine fetal growth, evaluated by anthropometric measurements, and biochemical growth factors; IGF-I and IGBP-1 among IDMs. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out on 69 full term IDMs who was admitted to neonatal intensive care units, Ain Shams University Hospitals. Clinical examination including anthropometric measurements; birth weight, length, head circumference, mid-arm circumference, skinfold thickness at triceps and subscapular areas and placental weight. Laboratory investigations included maternal HbA1c and cord blood IGF-I and IGBP-1. They were classified into three groups: 20 small for gestational age (SGA), 25 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 24 large for gestational age (LGA). Results: Most of SGA neonates were born to mothers with type I diabetes, while most of AGA and LGA were born to mothers with gestational diabetes. According to maternal HbA1c, SGA and LGA neonates were born to metabolically uncontrolled mothers while AGA neonates were born to well-controlled diabetic mothers. Anthropometric measurements had significant positive correlations with IGF-I and negative correlations with IGFBP-1. Conclusions: Good control of diabetes during pregnancy is essential to improve fetal growth. There is an opposing effect of cord blood IGF-I and IGFBP-1 on anthropometric measurements. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of maternal anthropometry and metabolic parameters on neonatal anthropometry. Materials and Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2008 to June 2009 at a single tertiary care center. Maternal anthropometry and metabolic parameters like fasting serum insulin, lipid profile, and random blood glucose were estimated in 50 pregnant women at term. Detailed anthropometry of the neonates was performed. Results: Large for gestational age (LGA) babies had higher maternal body mass index (BMI), fasting serum insulin, and cord blood insulin levels, and lower maternal high density lipoprotein (HDL) compared to appropriate for gestational age (AGA) group (P < 0.001). Among the maternal parameters, BMI, gestational age, fasting serum insulin, and random blood sugar (RBS) had significant positive correlation, while HDL had negative correlation with birth weight (P < 0.05). However, only maternal BMI was the significant predictor of neonatal birth weight on multiple regression analysis (ß = 0.340, P = 0.01). Apolipoprotein (Apo) A5 is a protein involved in the activation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and the metabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins. LPL plays a major role in the metabolism of TG-rich lipoproteins, and placental LPL activity is known to correlate positively with foetal fat deposition and size. We examine the association between the common APOA5 S19W polymorphism and neonatal anthropometrical measurements, lipoprotein and hormone concentrations, and insulin sensitivity in 58 normal weight Caucasian newborns from the Mérida cohort. Neonates with the W allele displayed lower BMI (P < 0.001), ponderal index (P < 0.001), birth weight (P < 0.01), insulin levels (P < 0.05), the insulin/cortisol ratio (P < 0.05), HOMA-R (P < 0.05) and Apo B values (P < 0.01), but higher oxidised LDL (LDLox) values and a higher LDLox/low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ratio (both P < 0.05) than S-homozygous newborns. The APOA5 S19W polymorphism was associated with foetal growth as well as with glucose and lipoprotein metabolism in the neonates. Concurrence of the S19W polymorphism in neonates and their mothers did not affect neonatal lipid and lipoprotein concentrations but was associated with impaired foetal growth. Specifically, W allele carriers displayed a higher degree of LDL oxidation and lower body weight, plasma insulin values, insulin/cortisol ratio and Apo B concentrations than homozygotes for the common S allele. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the W allele carriers received a less optimal nutrition during gestation and that their lipoprotein antioxidant status was inferior to that of their homozygous S allele counterparts. Background/Aims: Growth hormone (GH) is an accepted treatment for short children born small for gestational age (SGA). The aim of this analysis was to compare the growth response to GH in children with low birth weight born SGA or appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Methods: This retrospective observational study is from one center. Of all the children with a birth weight <2,500 g treated, 50 were primarily diagnosed as having growth hormone deficiency ([A] SGA, n = 26; [B] AGA, n = 24) and 138 were originally diagnosed SGA or AGA (reclassified: [C] SGA, n = 102; [D] AGA, n = 36). Results: [Median; A, B, C, D]: at an age of 4.9, 5.2, 5.8, 5.8 years, a height of -2.9, -2.4, -2.8, -2.9 SDS and a GH dose of 27, 28, 41, 39 μg/kg/day, the children grew 0.9, 0.9, 0.8, 0.9 SDS in height, respectively. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) at GH start was, respectively, -2.1, -2.2, -0.4, -0.9 SDS and rose to (delta IGF-1) 1.8, 2.0, 1.7, 1.5 SDS during the first year on GH. All differences were not significant. Conclusions: We show for the first time that short stature children with low birth weight born AGA experience the same increase in height and IGFs to GH treatment as those born SGA irrespective of actual GH secretory status. Abstract: Background: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants are at risk of impaired postnatal growth. Impaired postnatal growth has been reported to be associated with delayed cognitive and motor development. Aims: To describe postnatal growth patterns of appropriate and small for gestational age (AGA and SGA) ELBW children in relation to their cognitive and motor outcome at age 5.5. Study design: Retrospective cohort study. Subjects: One hundred one children with a BW≤750g, born between 1996 and 2005 in the University Hospital Utrecht, The Netherlands. Outcome measures: Height (Ht), weight (Wt), occipital–frontal circumference (OFC) at birth, 15months and 2years corrected age and 3.5 and 5.5years. Cognitive and motor outcome at 5.5years of age, classified as normal (Z-score ≥−1), mildly delayed (−2≤Z-score <−1) or severely delayed (Z-score <−2). AGA (Ht, Wt or OFC at birth ≥−2 SDS) infants were compared with SGA (Ht, Wt or OFC at birth <−2 SDS) infants. Results: Between birth and 5.5years catch-up growth in Ht, weight for height (Wt/Ht), Wt and OFC was seen in 72.2%, 55.2%, 28.6% and 68.9% respectively of the SGA infants. For AGA infants we found substantial catch-down growth in Ht (15.4%) and Wt (33.8%). Cognitive and motor outcome was normal in 76.2% and 41.6% of the 101 children. A significantly higher percentage of normal cognitive outcome was found in AGA infants with Wt growth remaining at ≥−2 SDS compared to AGA infants with catch-down growth (83% vs 63%). Next, SGA infants who caught-up in OFC had a higher prevalence of normal cognitive outcome compared to SGA infants who did not catch-up in OFC. Furthermore, a higher percentage of severely delayed motor outcome was found in SGA infants without catch-up growth in Wt compared to SGA infants who caught-up in Wt (61.5% vs 32.2%). Conclusions: Catch-up growth in Ht, Wt/Ht and OFC occurred in the majority of the SGA infants with a BW≤750g, but was less common in Wt. AGA children who remained their Wt at ≥−2 SDS have a better cognitive and motor developmental outcome at 5.5years of age. Objective: To estimate the influence of fetal growth restriction (FGR) on neonatal morbidity and mortality among premature discordant twin neonates. Study design: Our medical records (2002-2007) of preterm twins born at 24-37 weeks' gestation were reviewed. Significant discordance was defined as >15% difference in birth weight. Small for gestational age (SGA) was defined as birth weight <10th percentile, and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) was between the 10th and 90th percentile, according to a twin and sex-adjusted gestational age nomogram. The SGA/AGA group comprised of one SGA twin and its AGA pair (30 pairs). Another group of non-SGA discordant twins was also evaluated (n=40 pairs, AGA/AGA). The morbidity and mortality rates were compared between the groups. Results: Of the selected outcome variables, the only ones in which the incidence was significantly lower for SGA neonates than their AGA pairs were respiratory distress syndrome (5 vs. 11, P=0.014), apnea (1 vs. 9, P=0.004) and the need for respiratory support (5 vs. 14, P=0.002). Anemia, erythropoietin therapy and hyperbilirubinemia were significantly higher in the SGA twin. All selected outcome variables had similar rates within the AGA/AGA pairs. Conclusion: FGR among premature discordant twin pairs is associated with significantly lower rates of respiratory morbidity and higher anemia and erythropoietin therapy rates. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is susceptible to programming during fetal development and may be linked to risk of disease later in life. In a former prospective study the cohort was divided into those born appropriate for gestational age (AGA) or small for gestational age (SGA; birth weight <10 percentile). In 52 adolescent boys (17.5 years) we assessed circulating androgen levels (T, Δ4-adione, DHEAS), overnight serum cortisol profiles (every 20 min), ACTH stimulation test (250 μg i.v.) and analysis of 24-hour urinary adrenal steroid excretion. Urinary excretion of adrenal androgen and cortisol metabolites were significantly lower in the SGA compared to the AGA group. Basal morning cortisol levels were lower in adolescents born SGA compared to those born AGA (365 mmol/l, interquartile range (IQR) 284-413 vs. 445 mmol/l, IQR 377-495, p = 0.04), but overnight cortisol profiles (AUC) did not differ. The ACTH test showed equally stimulated levels of cortisol for those born SGA and AGA. There was no difference in serum testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and Δ4-adione levels between the SGA and AGA subjects. This suggests impaired excretion of adrenal androgen and cortisol metabolites in young men born SGA compared to AGA. Background/Aims: Some studies reported an impaired gonadal function in males born small for gestational age (SGA). We investigated Sertoli cell function by measuring serum inhibin B and antimullerian hormone (AMH) levels in prepubertal boys and young men born SGA in comparison with age-matched controls born appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Methods: Inhibin B and AMH levels were determined in 73 prepubertal short SGA boys and in 72 age-matched AGA boys. In addition, 25 SGA boys were re-examined after 2 years of growth hormone (GH) treatment. Furthermore, inhibin B, AMH, testosterone, LH and FSH were studied in three groups of young men: 21 SGA men treated with GH, 15 SGA men with spontaneous catch-up growth and 25 young men born AGA. Results: Prepubertal short SGA boys and AGA boys had similar inhibin B (87.3 and 78.2 ng/ml) and AMH levels (75.6 and 63.6 μg/l, respectively). GH treatment did not result in different inhibin B and AMH levels. In young SGA men, inhibin B, testosterone, LH and FSH levels were similar compared to young AGA men. Objective: To report Bayley scores of 572 twenty-four-month corrected age infants whose birth weights (BWs) were less than 1500 g cared for in a Community Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) between 1990 and 2002 when surfactant was routinely used. Study design: Survival, 'normal' defined as both Mental Developmental Index (MDI) and Psychomotor Developmental Index (PDI)>84, MDI>69 and MDI>84 were analyzed by gestational age (GA) and BW. Comparisons were made between infants born pre- and post-1996 when high-frequency oscillatory ventilation came into frequent use, Medicaid and non-Medicaid infants, multiples and singletons, outborn and inborn infants, boys and girls and infants with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and those appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Results: There was a correlation between GA and BW and improving outcomes. Scores do not approach those of normal standardization sample populations (60% for 'normal', 68% for MDI>84 and 95% for MDI>69) until 1400 g and 30 weeks. Medicaid, outborn and IUGR infants, and boys did worse in some aspects. Conclusion: There was a correlation between both GA and BW and improving outcomes. Objective: To produce normograms of Doppler indices of major fetal arteries and their ratios relative to the ascending aorta in a cohort of appropriately grown for gestational age fetuses. Methods: Prospective longitudinal study of 70 women with appropriately grown for gestational age fetuses between 24 and 38 weeks' gestation attending the Fetal Growth Clinic of a large UK teaching hospital. Doppler velocimetry of the middle cerebral (MCA), umbilical (UmA) and renal arteries (RA) and the ascending (AAO) and descending (DAO) aortas were studied using color power angiography. Ratios of the Doppler indices [pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI), systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratio] were then calculated using the ascending aorta as the reference numerator for the other four vessels to produce normograms. Regression analysis was performed to determined the significance, if any, of the changes in these ratios with gestation. Results: The normograms of the various Doppler indices were similar for the middle cerebral artery, ascending and descending aortas. There was an initial rise to a peak between 30 and 32 weeks and then a gradual return to values at 38 weeks similar to those at 24 weeks' gestation. In the renal artery, the indices showed very little variation with gestation. However, there was a gradual fall in the indices with gestation in the umbilical artery. The ratios of the various indices relative to that of the ascending aorta demonstrated an increase with gestation. The changes with gestation were statistically significant for the ratios of the indices from the ascending aorta to those of the middle cerebral, renal and umbilical arteries but not for those of the descending aorta. Conclusions: The vascular resistance in the five fetal arteries decreased towards the end of pregnancy and the ratios of their indices relative to those of the ascending aorta decreased from 24 to 38 weeks' gestation. To evaluate the effect of growth hormone (GH) administration on adult height (AH) in two groups of isolated GH-deficient (IGHD) children born either small (birth weight below –2 SD) or appropriate (birth weight above –2 SD) for gestational age (GA). Out of 35 prepubertal IGHD children, 14 small for GA (SGA, group A) and 21 appropriate for GA (AGA, group B) were examined. All patients received continuous GH treatment at a median dose of 0.028 mg/kg/day (range 0.023–0.032) in group A and 0.024 (range 0.023–0.028) in group B. GH treatment was administered for a period of 67.0 months (range 42.37–96.05) in group A and 54.31 months (range 47.14–69.31) in group B. All children were measured using a Harpenden stadiometer every 6 months until they reached AH (growth velocity <1 cm/year). The patients underwent a retesting a few months after stopping GH therapy. A significant difference was found between group A and B as expected for birth weight SD, –2.70 (range –2.87 to –2.29) and –0.73 (range –1.30 to 0.14) respectively (p < 0.000001) and interestingly also for body mass index SDS (BMI SDS) at retesting, 0.08 (range 0.30 to –1.51) and 0.61 (range 0.73 to –1.10) respectively (p < 0.04). We observed no significant differences between groups A and B in height (expressed as the SDS for chronological age, height SDS) at diagnosis (p = 0.75), height SDS at start of puberty (p = 0.51), height SDS at retesting (p = 0.50), target height SDS (TH SDS) (p = 0.47), AH SDS (p = 0.92), corrected height SDS (height SDS – TH SDS) (p = 0.60), BMI SDS at diagnosis (p = 0.25), GH dosage (p = 0.34) and therapy duration (p = 0.52). Aim: To evaluate whether serial Doppler measurements of superior mesenteric artery blood flow velocity could predict early tolerance to enteral feeding in preterm infants.Methods: In a prospective study, 54 healthy preterm neonates were assigned to one of the following groups: neonates with birthweight appropriate for gestational age (group 1), neonates small for gestational age without (group 2) and with prenatal haemodynamic disturbances (group 3). We studied Doppler blood flow velocity and resistance index before and after the first feed.Results: Contrary to patients of group 3, infants in groups 1 and 2 showed a significant increase in blood flow velocity and a significant decrease in resistance index from the preprandial values after the first feed. At each postprandial time, we found significant differences in all velocity and resistance measurements between patients of group 3 and patients of both groups 1 and 2. In all patients, we found that the value of mean velocity measured 30 min after the first feed was the most predictive of early feed tolerance, with 95% sensitivity and 94% specificity when mean velocity >0.38 m/s.Conclusion: Small-for-gestational-age preterm infants with prenatal haemodynamic disturbances have an unusual intestinal haemodynamic response to the first feed. : ObjectivesA prospective study was performed to evaluate the incidence, clinical manifestations and outcome of ductus arteriosus aneurysm (DAA) in full-term neonates.: BackgroundDuctus arteriosus aneurysm has been considered to be a rare congenital lesion and a potentially fatal abnormality.: MethodsA total of 548 full-term neonates received echocardiographic screening.: ResultsThere were 48 (8.8%) patients (28 boys and 20 girls) with DAA detected by echocardiography. The maximal diameter of the DAA ranged from 6.5 to 11.2 mm (8.2 ± 1.2 mm). All cases were asymptomatic. There were no significant differences in gender, gestational age, maternal age or Apgar score between the newborns with or without DAA. Newborns with DAA had a higher birth body weight, higher incidence of maternal gestational diabetes mellitus and more mothers with blood group A, compared with newborns without DAA (p < 0.05). Follow-up echocardiograms showed spontaneous closure of the ductus arteriosus in all patients except those without DAA. The DAA became progressively smaller after ductal closure in 33 patients (70.2%) and completely disappeared by 7 to 35 days of life. The other 14 patients (29.8%) with DAA had echocardiographic evidence of progressive formation of thrombi between the third and tenth day of life. The DAA and thrombi spontaneously disappeared in all patients by one month after birth.: ConclusionsThere is a higher incidence of DAA with a good outcome in our series compared with previous reports. We speculate that the presence of DAA may be a normal variant of the ductal bump and part of a normal process of spontaneous ductal closure in full-term neonates. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Neu-Laxova syndrome is a rare lethal congenital disorder involving multiple systems. Intrauterine growth retardation, ichthyosis, microcephaly, abnormal facial findings, and limb contractures are its key features. We present a case of Neu-Laxova syndrome in a male appropriate for gestational age (AGA) newborn with characteristic features including ichthyosis, microcephaly, severe ectropion, rudimentary ears, eclabion, limb contractures, and hypoplastic genitalia. The patient was born at 38 weeks of gestation to consanguinous Turkish parents. The mother was a 20-year-old primi gravida with lack of prenatal follow-up. Therefore, the case was diagnosed postnatally, and he died 5 days later. Because of the autosomal recessive inheritance of Neu-Laxova syndrome, in countries with high rates of consanguineous marriage, such as Turkey, physicians have to know this syndrome, and serial prenatal ultrasound examinations with genetic counseling should be performed on pregnant women at high risk.
