This article provides comparative perspectives on collective behaviors that are widely found throughout the animal kingdom, ranging from insect and crustacea swarms, fish schools, bird flocks, and mammal herds to human crowds. Studies of nonhuman animal and human collective behaviors have progressed almost separately even though they have a similar history. Theoretical studies have investigated the reproduction of collective phenomena from simple inter-individual rules, and subsequent empirical and experimental studies have found diverse and complex collective behaviors that are difficult to explain with classical theoretical models. As a consequence, a wide variety of interaction rules have been proposed. To determine models to be implemented in nature and find fundamental mechanisms of collective behaviors, this paper argues that we should compare collective behaviors among various species while adopting Tinbergen's four questions regarding mechanism, function, development, and evolution as a methodological basis. As an example of a comparative collective behavior paradigm, we introduce our studies in which a mutual anticipation mechanism inspired by nonhuman animal collective behaviors can be linked to a self-organization function in human collective behaviors. We expect that the study of comparative collective behaviors will expand, the methodology will become more sophisticated, and new perspectives regarding the multitemporal features of collective behaviors will emerge. Circadian rhythm is an important factor for long-distance movement in insect species. Previous studies have shown the relationship between movement and circadian rhythm, suggesting that movement has a genetic correlation with circadian rhythm. Present study investigated whether the period and amplitude (power) of circadian rhythm are influenced by the artificial selection of moving distance in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Our results indicated that the circadian rhythm did not differ between genetically longer and shorter moving distance populations, suggesting that the relationship between movement and circadian rhythm does not depend on a genetic correlation in T. castaneum. One of the most important survival strategies of organisms is to avoid predators. Studying one of such strategies, namely, death‐feigning behavior, has recently become more common. The success or failure of this antipredator strategy will be affected by the circadian rhythms of both prey and predator because death feigning sometimes has a diurnal rhythm. However, few studies have analyzed the effects of differences in circadian rhythms on predator‐avoidance behavior at the genetic level. Recently, the relationship between genes relating to circadian rhythm and death‐feigning behavior, an antipredator behavior, has been established at the molecular level. Therefore, in this study, we compared three circadian rhythm‐related traits, the free‐running period of rhythms, amplitude of circadian rhythms, and total activity of strains of three Tribolium species that were artificially selected for the death‐feigning duration: short (S‐strains) and long (L‐strains) durations. As a result, the amplitude of circadian rhythms and total activity were significantly different between S‐ and L‐strains, but there was no difference in the free‐running periods of the rhythm between the strains in T. castaneum, T. confusum, and T. freemani. Although the relationship between death‐feigning behavior and activity has been reported for all three species, a genetic relationship between the duration of death feigning and the amplitude of circadian rhythms has been newly found in the present study. Circadian rhythms, which respond to the day-night cycle on the earth, arise from the endogenous timekeeping system within organisms, called the "biological clock." For accurate circadian rhythms, daily fluctuations in light and temperature are considered one of the important time cues. In social insects, both abiotic and biotic factors (i.e., social interactions) play a significant role in activity-rest rhythm regulation. However, it is challenging to monitor individual activity-rest rhythms in a colony because of the large group size and small body size. Therefore, it is unclear whether individuals in a colony exhibit activity-rest rhythms and how social interactions regulate their activity-rest rhythms in the colony. This study developed an image-based tracking system using 2D barcodes for Diacamma cf. indicum from Japan (a monomorphic ant) and measured the locomotor activities of all colony members under laboratory colony conditions. We also investigated the effect of broods on activity-rest rhythms by removing all broods under colony conditions. Activity-rest rhythms appeared only in isolated ants, not under colony conditions. In addition, workers showed arrhythmic activities after brood removal. These results suggested that a mixture of social interactions, and not light and temperature, induces the loss of activity-rest rhythms. Language is a result of brain function; thus, impairment in cognitive function can result in language disorders. Understanding the aging of brain functions in terms of language processing is crucial for modern aging societies. Previous studies have shown that language characteristics, such as verbal fluency, are associated with cognitive functions. However, the scaling laws in language in elderly people remain poorly understood. In the current study, we recorded large-scale data of one million words from group conversations among healthy elderly people and analyzed the relationship between spoken language and cognitive functions in terms of scaling laws, namely, Zipf's law and Heaps' law. We found that word patterns followed these scaling laws irrespective of cognitive function, and that the variations in Heaps' exponents were associated with cognitive function. Moreover, variations in Heaps' exponents were associated with the ratio of new words taken from the other participants' speech. Many species show rhythmicity in activity, from the timing of flowering in plants to that of foraging behavior in animals. The free-running periods and amplitude (sometimes called strength or power) of circadian rhythms are often used as indicators of biological clocks. Many reports have shown that these traits are highly geographically variable, and interestingly, they often show latitudinal or longitudinal clines. In many cases, the higher the latitude is, the longer the free-running circadian period (i.e., period of rhythm) in insects and plants. However, reports of positive correlations between latitude or longitude and circadian rhythm traits, including free-running periods, the power of the rhythm and locomotor activity, are limited to certain taxonomic groups. Therefore, we collected a cosmopolitan stored-product pest species, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, in various parts of Japan and examined its rhythm traits, including the power and period of the rhythm, which were calculated from locomotor activity. The analysis revealed that the power was significantly lower for beetles collected in northern areas than southern areas in Japan. However, it is worth noting that the period of circadian rhythm did not show any clines; specifically, it did not vary among the sampling sites, despite the very large sample size (n = 1585). Circadian rhythms, their free-running periods and the power of the rhythms are often used as indicators of biological clocks, and there is evidence that the free-running periods of circadian rhythms are not affected by environmental factors, such as temperature. However, there are few studies of environmental effects on the power of the rhythms, and it is not clear whether temperature compensation is universal. Additionally, genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity in biological clocks are important for understanding the evolution of biological rhythms, but genetic and plastic effects are rarely investigated. Here, we used 18 isofemale lines (genotypes) of Gnatocerus cornutus to assess rhythms of locomotor activity, while also testing for temperature effects. We found that total activity and the power of the circadian rhythm were affected by interactions between sex and genotype or between sex, genotype and temperature. The males tended to be more active and showed greater increases in activity, but this effect varied across both genotypes and temperatures. The period of activity varied only by genotype and was thus independent of temperature. The complicated genotype–sex–environment interactions we recorded stress the importance of investigating circadian activity in more integrated ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The success of social insects is often attributed to the specialized morphologies and behaviours of workers. One of the most elaborate specializations in ant species is the workers' plugging behaviour, in which their uniquely shaped heads are used for nest defence. These species generally nest in tree cavities. Without morphologically specialized workers (major workers) plugging the nest entrance, nests are easily attacked and replaced by conspecific and heterospecific cavity‐dwelling ants and other predators. Therefore, major workers are expected to defend the nest at all times. However, empirical evidence on the social time investment for nest defence is still lacking. Here, we investigated how major workers of Colobopsis nipponicus achieve nest defence (plugging behaviour) in terms of their work schedule. Our results showed that the nests had more major workers than entrances. The observation of artificial plastic nests over 6 days in the laboratory revealed that the nest entrance was guarded almost continuously by multiple major workers. The entrance‐guarding schedule was not equally divided among major workers, and there were no clear shift patterns in the timing of changeovers. The anterior temporal lobe (ATL) has been considered an essential region for processing semantic knowledge; nonetheless, the association between word production patterns and the structural and functional characteristics of the ATL remains unclear. To examine this, we analyzed over one million words from group conversations among community-dwelling older adults and their multimodal magnetic resonance imaging data. A quantitative index for the word production patterns, namely the exponent β of Heaps' law, positively correlated with the left anterior middle temporal gyrus volume. Moreover, β negatively correlated with its resting-state functional connectivity with the precuneus. There was no significant correlation with the diffusion tensor imaging metrics in any fiber. These findings suggest that the vocabulary richness in spoken language depends on the brain status characterized by the semantic knowledge-related brain structure and its activation dissimilarity with the precuneus, a core region of the default mode network. Many parasitoid wasps exhibit 'oviposition learning,' whereby females associate host-related cues with oviposition and use them in subsequent searches for hosts. This is affected by various factors that have yet to be fully elucidated. We examined the effects of host developmental stage on oviposition learning in parasitoid wasps that utilize both larval and pupal hosts using Heterospilus prosopidis Viereck ( Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an ectoparasitoid of Bruchinae beetles ( Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), as a model. First, we examined whether the induction of host species preference differs between oviposition on larval and pupal hosts. Oviposition choice experiments were performed for both larval and pupal hosts using two equally preferred host species - Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and Callosobruchus maculatus ( Fabricius) - and wasps that were conditioned by an oviposition experience on either of the two host species. We found an induction of host species preference in wasps conditioned with pupal hosts but not in wasps conditioned with larval hosts. Next, we examined whether the induced preference was host-stage-specific. Oviposition experiments with pupal-host-conditioned wasps and larval hosts as choice hosts indicated that learned cues were not used when searching for larval hosts. Similar results were obtained for larval-host-conditioned wasps. We compared oviposition behavior on larval and pupal hosts but found no behavioral differences that could contribute to the observed difference in host preference induction. Our results indicate that larval and pupal hosts have different effects on host preference following an oviposition experience in H. prosopidis, although the detailed mechanisms remain unclear. These findings are notable because in parasitoid wasps that utilize both larval and pupal hosts, host developmental stages have attracted little attention as factors affecting oviposition learning. A key challenge in movement ecology is to understand how animals move in nature. Previous studies have predicted that animals should perform a special class of random walks, called Lévy walk, to obtain more targets. However, some empirical studies did not support this hypothesis, and the relationship between search strategy and ecological factors is still unclear. We focused on ecological factors, such as predation risk, and analyzed whether Lévy walk may not be favored. It was remarkable that the ecological factors often altered an optimal search strategy from Lévy walk to Brownian walk, depending on the speed of the predator’s movement, density of predators, etc. This occurred because higher target encounter rates simultaneously led searchers to higher predation risks. Our findings indicate that animals may not perform Lévy walks often, and we suggest that it is crucial to consider the ecological context for evaluating the search strategy performed by animals in the field. Tracking animal movements such as walking is an essential task for understanding how and why animals move in an environment and respond to external stimuli. Different methods that implemented image analysis and a data logger such as GPS have been used in laboratory experiments and in field studies, respectively. Recently, animal movement patterns without stimuli have attracted an increasing attention in search for common innate characteristics underlying all of their movements. However, it is difficult to track the movements in a vast and homogeneous environment without stimuli because of space constraints in laboratories or environmental heterogeneity in the field, hindering our understanding of inherent movement patterns. Here, we applied an omnidirectional treadmill mechanism, or a servosphere, as a tool for tracking two-dimensional movements of small animals that can provide both a homogenous environment and a virtual infinite space for walking. To validate the use of our tracking system for assessment of the free-walking behavior, we compared walking patterns of individual pillbugs (Armadillidium vulgare) on the servosphere with that in two types of experimental flat arenas. Our results revealed that the walking patterns on the servosphere showed similar diffusive characteristics to those observed in the large arena simulating an open space, and we demonstrated that our mechanism provides more robust measurements of diffusive properties compared to a small arena with enclosure. Moreover, we showed that anomalous diffusion properties, including Lévy walk, can be detected from the free-walking behavior on our tracking system. Thus, our novel tracking system is useful to measure inherent movement patterns, which will contribute to the studies of movement ecology, ethology, and behavioral sciences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
