Fuzzy dark matter (FDM), comprised of ultralight (⁠|$m \sim 10^{-22}\,{\rm eV}$|⁠) boson particles, has received significant attention as a viable alternative to cold dark matter (CDM), as it approximates CDM on large scales (⁠|${\gtrsim}1$|  Mpc) while potentially resolving some of its small-scale problems via kiloparsec-scale quantum interference. However, the most basic FDM model, with one free parameter (the boson mass), is subject to a tension: small boson masses yield the desired cores of dwarf galaxies but underpredict structure in the Lyman-α forest, while large boson masses render FDM effectively identical to CDM. This Catch-22 problem may be alleviated by considering an axion-like particle with attractive particle self-interactions. We simulate an idealized FDM halo with self-interactions parametrized by an energy decay constant |$f \sim 10^{15}~\rm {GeV}$| related to the axion symmetry-breaking conjectured to solve the strong-CP problem in particle physics. We observe solitons, a hallmark of FDM, condensing within a broader halo envelope, and find that the density profile and soliton mass depend on self-interaction strength. We propose generalized formulae to extend those from previous works to include self-interactions. We also investigate a critical mass threshold predicted for strong interactions at which the soliton collapses into a compact, unresolved state. A novel interpretation of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs) as theories of gravity is explored by proposing a holographic duality where the bulk SymTFT (with the gauging of a suitable Lagrangian algebra) is dual to the universal effective field theory (EFT) that describes spontaneous symmetry breaking on the boundary. The authors tested this conjecture in various dimensions and with many examples involving different continuous symmetry structures, including non‐Abelian and non‐invertible symmetries, as well as higher groups. For instance, many Abelian SymTFTs are found to be dual to free theories of Goldstone bosons or generalized Maxwell fields, while non‐Abelian SymTFTs relate to non‐linear sigma models with target spaces defined by the symmetry groups. The analysis is also extended to include the non‐invertible Q/Z$\mathbb {Q}/\mathbb {Z}$ axial symmetry, which is shown to be dual to axion‐Maxwell theory, and a non‐Abelian 2‐group structure in four dimensions, deriving a new parity‐violating interaction that has implications for the low‐energy dynamics of U(N)$U(N)$ QCD. Exploring the mysterious dark matter is a key quest in modern physics. Currently, detecting axions, a hypothetical particle proposed as a primary component of dark matter, remains a significant challenge due to their weakly interacting nature. Here we show at quantum level that in a cavity permeated by a magnetic field, the single axion-photon conversion rate is enhanced by the cavity quality factor and is quantitatively larger than the classical result by π/2. The axion cavity can be considered a quantum device emitting single photons with temporal separations. This differs from the classical picture and reveals a possibility for the axion cavity experiment to handle the signal sensitivity at the quantum level, e.g., a dual path quantum interferometry with cross-power and second-order correlation measurements. This scheme would greatly reduce the signal scanning time and improve the sensitivity of the axion-photon coupling, potentially leading to the direct observation of axions. Axions are the top contenders for explaining the enigmatic dark matter in the Universe. The authors present the inaugural quantum-level validation of a cavity's resonant boost to the conversion of axions into photons, thus employing a dual-path interferometry method can greatly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in the experiments, enabling swifter scans and a better detection sensitivity for the evasive axion dark matter. In this review, we present a self-contained introduction to axion-like particles (ALPs) with a particular focus on their effects on photon polarization: both theoretical and phenomenological aspects are discussed. We derive the photon survival probability in the presence of photon–ALP interaction, the corresponding final photon degree of linear polarization, and the polarization angle in a wide energy interval. The presented results can be tested by current and planned missions such as IXPE (already operative), eXTP, XL-Calibur, NGXP, XPP in the X-ray band and like COSI (approved to launch), e-ASTROGAM, and AMEGO in the high-energy range. Specifically, we describe ALP-induced polarization effects on several astrophysical sources, such as galaxy clusters, blazars, and gamma-ray bursts, and we discuss their real detectability. In particular, galaxy clusters appear as very good observational targets in this respect. Moreover, in the very-high-energy (VHE) band, we discuss a peculiar ALP signature in photon polarization, in principle capable of proving the ALP existence. Unfortunately, present technologies cannot detect photon polarization up to such high energies, but the observational capability of the latter ALP signature in the VHE band could represent an interesting challenge for the future. As a matter of fact, the aim of this review is to show new ways to make progress in the physics of ALPs, thanks to their effects on photon polarization, a topic that has aroused less interest in the past, but which is now timely with the advent of many new polarimetric missions. The axion anti-quark nugget (A Q ¯ N) model was developed to explain in a natural way the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in Universe. In this hypothesis, a similitude between the dark and the visible components exists. The lack of observability of any type of dark matter up to now, in particular A Q ¯ Ns, requires finding new ways of detecting these particles, if they exist. In spite of strong interaction with visible matter, for such objects a very small ratio of cross section to mass is expected and thus huge detector systems are necessary. This paper presents a new idea for the direct detection of the A Q ¯ Ns using minerals as natural rock deposits acting as paleo-detectors, where the latent signals of luminescence produced by interactions of A Q ¯ Ns are registered and can be identified as an increased and symmetrical deposited dose. The estimates were made for minerals widely distributed on Earth, for which the thermoluminescence (TL) signal is intense and if the thermal conditions are constant and with low temperatures, the lifetime of the latent signals is kept for geological time scales. We examine the capability of Mu3e to probe light new physics scenarios that produce a prompt electron-positron resonance and demonstrate how angular observables are instrumental in enhancing the experimental sensitivity. We systematically investigate the effect of Mu3e's expected sensitivity on the parameter space of the dark photon, as well as on axion-like particles and light scalars with couplings to muons and electrons. ARIADNE (Axion Resonant InterAction Detection Experiment) is a table-top experiment that intends to search for QCD axions from exotic spin-dependent interactions mediated by axion between nuclei at sub-mm range. This experiment includes a non-magnetic mass to source the axion field, and a dense ensemble of hyper-polarized 3He nuclei to detect the axion field with nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR)-based method. The expected NMR signal from the interaction could be easily buried in the noise spectrum of the magnetometer, especially in a frequency range (~ 100 Hz) where the interaction signal is supposed to exist. The Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research at the Institute for Basic Science in Republic of Korea is home to multiple active axion search experiments using cavity haloscopes that operate within the frequency range of 1–6 GHz. The haloscopes convert axions to photons, resulting in an output power of about 10 - 24 –10 - 22 W. To detect such a small signal amidst noise, quantum-limited noise amplifiers and ultra-low-temperature environment (a few tenths of mK) are required for all critical readout components to minimize noise from all active and passive lossy components. Our primary objective is to achieve the highest possible scanning-frequency speed, which includes the time for maintenance and system calibration. This paper presents the development and operation of low-noise amplifiers for haloscope experiments targeting different frequency ranges and provides design, operational, and performance details of the amplifiers. Surface electrons in axion insulators are endowed with a topological layer degree of freedom followed by exotic transport phenomena, e.g. the layer Hall effect. Here, we propose that such a layer degree of freedom can be manipulated in a dissipationless way based on the antiferromagnetic |$\rm {MnBi_2Te_4}$| with tailored domain structure. This makes |$\rm {MnBi_2Te_4}$| a versatile platform to exploit the 'layertronics' to encode, process and store information. Importantly, the layer filter, layer valve and layer reverser devices can be achieved using the layer-locked chiral domain wall modes. The dissipationless nature of the domain wall modes makes the performance of the layertronic devices superior to those in spintronics and valleytronics. Specifically, the layer reverser, a layer version of the Datta–Das transistor, also fills up the blank in designing the valley reverser in valleytronics. We study the pole-skipping phenomenon within holographic axion theories, a common framework for studying strongly coupled systems with chemical potential (μ) and momentum relaxation (β). Considering the backreaction characterized by μ and β, we encounter coupled equations of motion for the metric, gauge, and axion field, which are classified into spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 channels. Employing gauge-invariant variables, we systematically address these equations and explore pole-skipping points within each sector using the near-horizon method. Our analysis reveals two classes of pole-skipping points: regular and singular pole-skipping points in which the latter is identified when standard linear differential equations exhibit singularity. Notably, pole-skipping points in the lower-half plane are regular, while those elsewhere are singular. This suggests that the pole-skipping point in the spin-0 channel, associated with quantum chaos, corresponds to a singular pole-skipping point. Additionally, we observe that the pole-skipping momentum, if purely real or imaginary for μ = β = 0, retains this characteristic for μ ≠ 0 and β ≠ 0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We extend a recently proposed framework, dubbed inflation by supersymmetry breaking, to hybrid inflation by introducing a waterfall field that allows to decouple the supersymmetry breaking scale in the observable sector from the inflation scale, while keeping intact the inflation sector and its successful predictions: naturally small slow-roll parameters, small field initial conditions and absence of the pseudo-scalar companion of the inflaton, in terms of one free parameter which is the first order correction to the inflaton Kähler potential. During inflation, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken with the inflaton being the superpartner of the goldstino, together with a massive vector that gauges the R-symmetry. Inflation arises around the maximum of the scalar potential at the origin where R-symmetry is unbroken. Moreover, a nearby minimum with tuneable vacuum energy can be accommodated by introducing a second order correction to the Kähler potential. The inflaton sector can also play the role of the supersymmetry breaking 'hidden' sector when coupled to the (supersymmetric) Standard Model, predicting a superheavy superparticle spectrum near the inflation scale. Here we show that the introduction of a waterfall field provides a natural way to end inflation and allows for a scale separation between supersymmetry breaking and inflation. I propose a unified model of particle physic and cosmology based on both a new extension of the standard particle model and the fundamental principle of the standard cosmology. Beyond the standard model, I introduce several species of dark fields with the dark symmetry of Z 2 ⊗ Z 2 ′ , the inflation field, cold dark matter (CDM) and dark energy (DE) are of course included among them. The model can coherently and completely describe the origin and evolution of the universe from the primordial inflation to the reheating, to the baryogenesis, to the current CDM and DE, and also the neutrino mass generation mechanism. For the energy evolution of each phase, I give its dynamical system of equations, and solve them by some special techniques. The numerical results can clearly show how each evolution is successfully implemented, furthermore, the model demonstrates that the DE genesis is purely from the CDM condensation, which is essentially a reverse process of the primordial slow-roll inflation, there is not the so-called "cosmological constant energy". By use of fewer input parameters, the model not only exactly reproduces the measured inflationary data and the current energy density budget, but also finely predicts such important values as the tensor-to-scalar ratio r 0. 0 5 ≈ 1. 6 8 × 1 0 − 6 , the inflaton mass M Φ ≈ 5. 0 5 × 1 0 1 0 GeV, the reheating temperature T r e ≈ 8. 2 9 × 1 0 1 0 GeV, the CDM mass M S ≈ 2 5 6 GeV, η B ≈ 6. 1 4 × 1 0 − 1 0 and h ≈ 0. 7 3 , in particular, the model smoothly clarifies and eliminates the "Hubble tension". In short, the unified model newly establishes the deeper and closer relations between particle physics and cosmology, therefore we expect the ongoing and future experiments to test the model. We investigate the effects of an early cosmological period dominated by primordial 2-2-holes on axion dark matter. The 2-2-holes emerge as a new family of horizonless classical solutions for ultracompact matter distributions in quadratic gravity, a candidate theory of quantum gravity. Thermal 2-2-holes, sourced by relativistic thermal gas, exhibit Hawking-like radiation and fulfill the entropy-area law before they become remnants with almost no radiation. In this paper, we consider the remnant contribution to dark matter (DM) small and adopt the axion DM scenario by the misalignment mechanism. We show that a 2-2-hole domination phase in the evolution of the universe changes the axion mass window, obtained from the dark matter abundance constraints. The biggest effect occurs when the remnants have the Planck mass, which is the case for a strongly coupled quantum gravity. The change in abundance constraints for the Planck mass 2-2-hole remnants amounts to that of the primordial black hole (PBH) counterpart. Therefore, since we use the revised constraints from gravitational waves on the initial fraction of 2-2-holes, the results here can also be considered the updated version of the PBH case. As a result, the lower limit on the axion mass is found as ma ~ 10-9 eV. Furthermore, the domination scenario itself constrains the remnant mass Mmin considerably. Given that we focus on the pre-BBN domination scenario in order not to interfere with BBN (Big Bang nucleosynthesis) constraints, the remnant mass window becomes mPl ≲ Mmin ≲ 0.1 g. Fuzzy dark matter (FDM), an attractive dark matter candidate comprising ultralight bosons (axions) with a particle mass ma ∼ 10−22 eV, is motivated by the small-scale challenges of cold dark matter and features a kpc-size de Broglie wavelength. Quantum wave interference inside an FDM halo gives rise to stochastically fluctuating density granulation; the resulting gravitational perturbations could drive significant disc thickening, providing a natural explanation for galactic thick discs. Here we present the first self-consistent simulations of FDM haloes and stellar discs, exploring ma  = 0.2–1.2 × 10−22 eV and halo masses M h = 0.7–2.8 × 1011 M⊙. Disc thickening is observed in all simulated systems. The disc heating rates are approximately constant in time and increase substantially with decreasing ma , reaching d h /d t ≃ 0.04 (0.4) kpc Gyr−1 and |${\rm d}\sigma _z^2/{\rm d}t \simeq 4$| (150) km2 s−2 Gyr−1 for ma  = 1.2 (0.2) × 10−22 eV and |$M_{\rm h}=7\times 10^{10} \, \rm {M}_{\odot }$|⁠ , where h is the disc scale height and σ z is the vertical velocity dispersion. These simulated heating rates agree within a factor of two with the theoretical estimates of Chiang et al. confirming that the rough estimate of Church et al. overpredicts the granulation-driven disc heating rate by two orders of magnitude. However, the simulation-inferred heating rates scale less steeply than the theoretically predicted relation |${\rm d}\sigma ^2_z/{\rm d}t \propto m_a^{-3}$|⁠. Finally, we examine the applicability of the Fokker–Planck approximation in FDM granulation modelling and the robustness of the ma exclusion bound derived from the Galactic disc kinematics. Ultralight axion (ULA) can be one of the potential candidates for dark matter. The extremely low mass of the ULA can lead to a de Broglie wavelength the size of galaxies which results in a suppression of the growth of structure on small scales. In this work, we forecast the constraint on the ULA particle mass m a and relative fraction to dark matter f a = Ωa/Ωd for the forthcoming Stage IV space-based optical survey equipment CSST (China Space Station Telescope). We focus on the CSST cosmic shear and galaxy clustering photometric surveys, and forecast the measurements of shear, galaxy, and galaxy–galaxy lensing power spectra (i.e. 3 × 2 pt). The effects of neutrino, baryonic feedback, and uncertainties of intrinsic alignment, shear calibration, galaxy bias, and photometric redshift are also included in the analysis. After performing a joint constraint on all the cosmological and systematical parameters based on the simulated data from the theoretical prediction, we obtain a lower limit of the ULA particle mass log10 (m a/eV) ≥ −22.5 and an upper limit of the ULA fraction f a ≤ 0.83 at 95 per cent confidence level, and log10 (m a/eV) ≥ −21.9 with f a ≤ 0.77 when ignoring the baryonic feedback. We find that the CSST photometric surveys can improve the constraint on the ULA mass by about one order of magnitude, compared to the current constraints using the same kind of observational data. We propose a simple setup which can stabilize a modulus field of the finite modular symmetry by the Coleman-Weinberg potential. Our scenario leads to a large hierarchy suppressing instanton-like corrections e2πiτ and to a light axion identified as Reτ, where τ is the modulus field. This stabilization mechanism provides the axion solution to the strong CP problem. The potential has a minimum at a large Imτ which suppresses explicit U(1)PQ violation terms proportional to e−2πImτ, and hence the quality of the axion is ensured by the residual symmetry associated with the T-transformation, τ → τ + 1, around the fixed point τ ∼ i∞. The naturalness problem of PQ symmetry motivates study of the heavy QCD axion, with masses ma> 1 MeV generated at scales above the QCD scale, and low values of the PQ symmetry breaking scale, fa. We compute the abundance of such axions in a model-independent way, assuming only that they freeze-out after reheating from inflation, and are not subsequently diluted by new physics. If these axions decay between neutrino decoupling and the last scatter era of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), they dilute the neutrinos and their abundance is constrained by CMB measurements of the energy density in dark radiation, Neff. We accurately compute this bound using a numerical code to evolve the axion momentum distribution, including many key processes and effects previously ignored. We assume that the only relevant axion decays are to final states involving Standard Model particles. We determine regions of (ma, fa) that will give a signal in Neff at CMB Stage 4 experiments. We similarly compute the Neff bound and CMB Stage 4 signal for heavy axions that can decay to light mirror photons. Finally, we compute the bounds on heavy axions with mass below 1 MeV that decay after the era of CMB last scatter, from their contribution to cold or hot dark matter or Neff at this era. It has been recently claimed that the axion coupling to fermions is responsible for an oscillating electric dipole moment (EDM) in the background of axion dark matter. In this work, we re-examine the derivation of this effect. Contrary to previous studies, we point out the physical relevance of an axion boundary term, which is crucial in restoring the axion shift symmetry and drastically affects the EDM phenomenology. To describe the latter, we introduce the notion of a time-averaged effective axion EDM, which encodes the boundary term and whose magnitude depends on the oscillation regime. For slow oscillations, the boundary term washes out the standard oscillating EDM, resulting in an exact cancellation in the static limit. Conversely, during fast oscillations, the boundary term amplifies the effective EDM relatively to the standard EDM contribution. This observable is especially interesting in the case of the electron EDM. For an O (1) axion-electron coupling, the overall size of the effective EDM in the regime of intermediate or fast oscillations is comparable to the present static EDM limit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a simple set of power counting rules which allows us to easily estimate calculable instanton effects up to O (1) factors. We apply the resulting Instanton NDA to examine the effects of small instantons on various axion models. We confirm that mechanisms that increase the axion mass via small instantons generically also lead to an enhancement of misaligned instanton contributions to the axion potential, deepening the axion quality problem. For generic models, new sources of CP violation in the UV must be absent in order to raise the axion mass above the QCD prediction. However, we find that ZN and composite axions are UV-safe against these misalignment effects. Axion GUT models are also insensitive to UV contributions at the GUT scale, unless a very large number of extra states are introduced below this scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate that the true QCD axion that solves the strong CP problem can be found in all generality outside the customary standard QCD band, with QCD being the sole source of Peccei-Quinn breaking. The essential reason is that the basis of axion-gluon interactions does not need to coincide with the mass basis. Specifically, we consider the case in which the QCD axion field is not the only singlet scalar in Nature but it mixes with other singlet scalars (besides the η′). We determine the exact mathematical condition for an arbitrary N-scalar potential to be Peccei-Quinn invariant. Such potentials provide extra sources of mass for the customary axion without enlarging the Standard Model gauge symmetry. The contribution to the axion mass stemming from the QCD topological susceptibility is shown to be shared then among the N axion eigenstates through a precise sum rule. Their location can only be displaced to the right of the standard QCD band. We demonstrate that the axion closest to this band can be displaced from it by a factor of N at most, and this corresponds to the case in which all axion signals are maximally deviated. Conversely, if one axion is found on the standard QCD band, the other eigenstates will be out of experimental reach. Our results imply that any ALP experiment which finds a signal to the right of the standard QCD axion band can be solving the strong CP problem within QCD, with the associated N − 1 excitations to be found in an area of parameter space that we determine. We develop a grand unified theory of matter and forces based on the gauge symmetry SU(5)L × SU(5)R with parity interchanging the two factor groups. Our main motivation for such a construction is to realize a minimal GUT embedding of left-right symmetric models that provide a parity solution to the strong CP problem without the axion. We show how the gauge couplings unify with an intermediate gauge symmetry SU(3)cL × SU(2)2L × U(1)L × SU(5)R, and establish its consistency with proton decay constraints. The model correctly reproduces the observed fermion masses and mixings and leads to naturally light Dirac neutrinos with their Yukawa couplings suppressed by a factor MI/MG, the ratio of the intermediate scale to the GUT scale. We call this mechanism type II-Dirac seesaw. Furthermore, the model predicts δCP = ±(130.4±1.2)° and = (4.8 – 8.4) meV for the Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass. In this work, we complete our CT18qed study with the neutron's photon parton distribution function (PDF), which is essential for the nucleus scattering phenomenology. Two methods, CT18lux and CT18qed, based on the LUXqed formalism and the DGLAP evolution, respectively, to determine the neutron's photon PDF have been presented. Various low-Q2 non-perturbative variations have been carefully examined, which are treated as additional uncertainties on top of those induced by quark and gluon PDFs. The impacts of the momentum sum rule as well as isospin symmetry violation have been explored and turned out to be negligible. A detailed comparison with other neutron's photon PDF sets has been performed, which shows a great improvement in the precision and a reasonable uncertainty estimation. Finally, two phenomenological implications are demonstrated with photon-initiated processes: neutrino-nucleus W-boson production, which is important for the near-future TeV–PeV neutrino observations, and the axion-like particle production at a high-energy muon beam-dump experiment. In some models of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM), one of the leading low energy consequences of the model appears in the form of the chromo-electric dipole moments (CEDMs) of the gluons and light quarks. We examine if these CEDMs can be distinguished from the QCD θ-term through the experimentally measurable nuclear and atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) in both cases with and without the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) mechanism solving the strong CP problem. We find that the nucleon EDMs show a distinctive pattern when the EDMs are dominantly induced by the light quark CEDMs without the PQ mechanism. In the presence of the PQ mechanism, the QCD θ-parameter corresponds to the vacuum value of the axion field, which might be induced either by CEDMs or by UV-originated PQ breaking other than the QCD anomaly, for instance the PQ breaking by quantum gravity effects. We find that in case with the PQ mechanism the nucleon EDMs have a similar pattern regardless of what is the dominant source of EDMs among the CEDMs and θ-term, unless there is a significant cancellation between the contributions from different sources. In contrast, some nuclei or atomic EDMs can have characteristic patterns significantly depending on the dominant source of EDMs, which may allow identifying the dominant source among the CEDMs and θ-term. Yet, discriminating the gluon CEDM from the QCD θ-parameter necessitates additional knowledge of low energy parameters induced by the gluon CEDM, which is not available at the moment. Our results imply that EDMs can reveal unambiguous sign of CEDMs while identifying the origin of the axion vacuum value, however it requires further knowledge of low energy parameters induced by the gluon CEDM. Recently, there has been great interest in the phenomenon of severe violation of the Wiedemann–Franz law in graphene Dirac fluids around 75 K, due to the strong coupling relativistic plasma near the neutral point, where traditional perturbation theory fails. To explain this phenomenon, this article proposes a holographic dual two-current axion coupling model, describing the interaction between electrons and holes in graphene near the charge neutrality point (CNP) and revealing the related physical mechanism. The study shows that the holographic two-current model aligns with experimental results at 100 μ m - 2 , and correctly predicts conductivity as temperature increases. Additionally, the article explores the behavior of β + γ and its impact on conductivity and thermal conductivity. The results suggest a frictional effect between electrons and holes. In a recent study, we proposed an axion-electrodynamics model that consistently incorporates a lepton Dirac field into the gauge-invariant Lagrangian of a closed physical system. Our investigation delved toward potential applications of the model, with a focus on its implications in the realm of Dark Matter axions interacting with leptons in a nonlinear electrodynamics background. In the present work, we introduce an extended axion-electrodynamics model wherein the Bianchi identities are modified by the axion field. This leads to a modification of the energy conservation law for the fields: the Poynting theorem in a source-free region, in which the axion field is involved. By implementing a quantization scheme, our model can offer a novel approach for addressing the problem of axion production/conversion in the presence of electromagnetic and Dirac fields. We consider static solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field systems with an axion potential known as axion stars, originally described by Guerra et al., JCAP (2019, 09 (09)). We construct numerically families of axion stars in the ground state, for different values of the decay constant fa. It is shown that the existence diagram becomes richer than the mini-boson star case, and several regions of stability appear as the value of fa decreases, yielding to more massive configurations with larger compactness. The Standard Model of electroweak interactions is based on the fundamental SU(2)weak × U(1)elect representation. It assumes massless neutrinos and purely left-handed massive W ± and Z0 bosons to which one should add the massless photon. The existence, verified experimentally, of neutrino oscillations poses a challenge to this scheme, since the oscillations take place between at least three massive neutrinos belonging to a mass hierarchy still to be determined. One should also take into account the possible existence of sterile neutrino species. In a somehow different context, the fundamental nature of the strong interaction component of the forces in nature is described by the, until now, extremely successful representation based on the SU(3)strong group which, together with the confining rule, give a description of massive hadrons in terms of quarks and gluons. To this is added the minimal U(1) Higgs group to give mass to the otherwise massless generators. This representation may also be challenged by the existence of both dark matter and dark energy, of still unknown composition. In this note, we shall discuss a possible connection between these questions, namely the need to extend the SU(3)strong × SU(2)weak × U(1)elect to account for massive neutrinos and dark matter. The main point of it is related to the role of axions, as postulated by Roberto Peccei and Helen Quinn. The existence of neutral pseudo-scalar bosons, that is, the axions, has been proposed long ago by Peccei and Quinn to explain the suppression of the electric dipole moment of the neutron. The associated U(1)PQ symmetry breaks at very high energy, and it guarantees that the interaction of other particles with axions is very weak. Axions and dark photons are common in many extensions of the Standard Model. The dark axion portal — an axion coupling to the dark photon and photon — can significantly modify their phenomenology. We study the cosmological constraints on the dark axion portal from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bounds on the energy density of dark radiation, ∆Neff. By computing the axion-photon-dark photon collision terms and solving the Boltzmann equations including their effects, we find that light axions are generally more constrained by ∆Neff than from supernova cooling or collider experiments. However, with dark photons at the MeV scale, a window of parameter space is opened up above the supernova limits and below the experimental exclusion, allowing for axion decay constants as low as fa ~ 104 GeV. This region also modifies indirectly the neutrino energy density, thus relaxing the cosmological upper bound on the sum of neutrino masses. We study the dynamics of scalar fields with compact field spaces, or axions, in de Sitter space. We argue that the field space topology can qualitatively affect the physics of these fields beyond just which terms are allowed in their actions. We argue that the sharpest difference is for massless fields — the free massless noncompact scalar field does not admit a two-point function that is both de Sitter-invariant and well-behaved at long distances, while the massless compact scalar does. As proof that this difference can be observable, we show that the long-distance behavior of a heavy scalar field, and thus its cosmological collider signal, can qualitatively change depending on whether it interacts with a light compact or noncompact scalar field. We find an interesting interplay between the circumference of the field space and the Hubble scale. When the field space is much larger than Hubble, the compact field behaves similarly to a light noncompact field and forces the heavy field to dilute much faster than any free field can. However, depending on how much smaller the field space is compared to Hubble, the compact field can cause the heavy scalar to decay either faster or slower than any free field and so we conclude that there can be qualitative and observable consequences of the field space's topology in inflationary correlation functions. In the presence of electromagnetic fields, both axions and gravitational waves (GWs) induce oscillating magnetic fields: a potentially detectable fingerprint of their presence. We demonstrate that the response is largely dictated by the symmetries of the instruments used to search for it. Focussing on low mass axion haloscopes, we derive selection rules that determine the parametric sensitivity of different detector geometries to axions and GWs, and which further reveal how to optimise the experimental geometry to maximise both signals. The formalism allows us to forecast the optimal sensitivity to GWs in the range of 100 kHz to 100 MHz for instruments such as ABRACADABRA, BASE, ADMX SLIC, SHAFT, WISPLC, and DMRadio. Recent progress has revealed a number of constraints that cosmological correlators and the closely related field-theoretic wavefunction must obey as a consequence of unitarity, locality, causality and the choice of initial state. When combined with symmetries, namely homogeneity, isotropy and scale invariance, these constraints enable one to compute large classes of simple observables, an approach known as (boostless) cosmological bootstrap. Here we show that it is possible to relax the restriction of scale invariance, if one retains a discrete scaling subgroup. We find an infinite class of solutions to the weaker bootstrap constraints and show that they reproduce and extend resonant non-Gaussianity, which arises in well-motivated models such as axion monodromy inflation. We find no evidence of the new non-Gaussian shapes in the Planck data. Intriguingly, our results can be re-interpreted as a deformation of the scale-invariant case to include a complex order of the total energy pole, or more evocatively interactions with a complex number of derivatives. Motivated by recent discussions and the absence of exact global symmetries in UV completions of gravity we re-examine the axion quality problem (and naturalness issues more generally) using antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond (KR) fields rather than their pseudoscalar duals, as suggested by string and higher dimensional theories. Two types of axions can be identified: a model independent S-type axion dual to a two form Bμν in 4D and a T-type axion coming directly as 4D scalar Kaluza-Klein (KK) components of higher-dimensional tensor fields. For T-type axions our conclusions largely agree with earlier workers for the axion quality problem, but we also reconcile why T-type axions can couple to matter localized on 3-branes with Planck suppressed strength even when the axion decay constants are of order the KK scale. For S-type axions, we review the duality between form fields and massive scalars and show how duality impacts naturalness arguments about the UV sensitivity of the scalar potential. In particular UV contributions on the KR side suppress contributions on the scalar side by powers of m/M with m the axion mass and M the UV scale. We re-examine how the axion quality problem is formulated on the dual side and compare to recent treatments. We study how axion quality is affected by the ubiquity of p-form gauge potentials (for both p = 2 and p = 3) in string vacua and identify two criteria that can potentially lead to a problem. We also show why most fields do not satisfy these criteria, but when they do the existence of multiple fields also provides mechanisms for resolving it. We present a concise review of selected parts of axion electrodynamics and their application to Casimir physics. We present the general formalism including the boundary conditions at a dielectric surface, derive the dispersion relation in the case where the axion parameter has a constant spatial derivative in the direction normal to the conducting plates, and calculate the Casimir energy for the simple case of scalar electrodynamics using dimensional regularization. We study the time evolution of magnetic fields in various configurations of spatially inhomogeneous pseudoscalar fields that are a coherent superposition of axions. For such systems, we derive a new induction equation for the magnetic field, which takes this inhomogeneity into account. Based on this equation, we study the evolution of a pair of Chern–Simons waves interacting with a linearly decreasing pseudoscalar field. The nonzero gradient of the pseudoscalar field leads to the mixing of these waves. We then consider the problem in a compact domain in the case where the initial Chern–Simons wave is mirror symmetric. The pseudoscalar field inhomogeneity then leads to an effective change in the dynamo parameter. Thus, the influence of a spatially inhomogeneous pseudoscalar field on the magnetic field evolution bears a strong dependence on the system geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emission properties of compact astrophysical objects such as Neutron stars (NSs) are associated with crucial astronomical observables. In the current work, we obtain the mass, pressure profiles of the non-rotating NSs using the modified Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff (TOV) system of equations in the presence of intense magnetic field. We obtain the profiles by using a specific distance-dependent magnetic field in the modified TOV equations. We employ three different equations of states (EoS) to solve the TOV equations by assuming the core of NSs comprises a hadronic matter. Employing the above profiles, we determine the cooling rates of spherically symmetric NSs as a function of time with and without including the magnetic field using the NSCool code. We have also determined the cooling rates as a function of radius for three different NSs. Furthermore, we determine the luminosity of neutrinos, axions, and photons emitting from the NSs in the presence and absence of a magnetic field for an axion mass 16 meV and three different EoS. Our comparative study indicates that the cooling rate and luminosities of neutrinos, axions, and photons change significantly due to the impact of the strong magnetic field. There is an ongoing debate on how seriously one should take the naturalness puzzles as the guidelines to new physics. In this debate gravity is often put aside, as an insignificant spectator force. However, this attitude misses the entire essence of the story. Through its S -matrix formulation, gravity promotes certain puzzles, such as the cosmological constant and strong- CP problems, into the consistency issues. The respective consistency requirements make the theory highly predictive. In particular, the cosmological vacuum energy must be zero. This has fundamental implications both for strong- CP and for dark energy puzzles. QCD must include an axion as an intrinsic part of the gauge redundancy, without the need of any global symmetry. This gives ϑ¯=0 to all orders in operator expansion. Applied to cosmology, the S -matrix implies that the energy budget of the Universe cannot come from a constant. The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a hallmark response of the topological field theory, which provides a paradigm shift in the study of emergent topological phenomena. However, its direct observation is yet to be realized due to the demanding magnetic configuration required to gap all surface states. Here, we theoretically propose that axion insulators with a simple ferromagnetic configuration, such as the MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n family, provide an ideal playground to realize the TME. In the designed triangular prism geometry, all the surface states are magnetically gapped. Under a vertical electric field, the surface Hall currents give rise to a nearly half-quantized orbital moment, accompanied by a gapless chiral hinge mode circulating in parallel. Thus, the orbital magnetization from the two topological origins can be easily distinguished by reversing the electric field. Within the framework of the extended Einstein–aether–axion theory, we studied the model of a two-level aetheric control over the evolution of a spatially isotropic homogeneous Universe filled with axionic dark matter. Two guiding functions are introduced, which depend on the expansion scalar of the aether flow being equal to the tripled Hubble function. The guiding function of the first type enters the aetheric effective metric, which modifies the kinetic term of the axionic system; the guiding function of the second type predetermines the structure of the potential axion field. We obtained new exact solutions to the total set of master equations in the model (with and without cosmological constant), and studied four analytically solvable submodels in detail, for which both guiding functions are reconstructed and illustrations of their behavior are presented. An axion cosmic string is known to be a chiral superconductor when the axion couples to an electrically charged fermion. After the QCD phase transition, a QCD axion string is attached by N domain walls. We would like to elucidate the fate of massless fermions on a global string after domain walls attached not only in the axion model but also in general models having string-wall composites. We investigate the Dirac equation under various string-wall composite backgrounds both in the axion(-like) models and in the N = 2 supersymmetry inspired Abelian-Higgs models. We give an answer to the elementary question of whether massless fermions exist, and if so, where they are localized. The answer depends on fermion/boson masses in the models, and the massless fermion can be localized either on the string, on one of the domain walls, or in one of the vacua. We find analytic solutions for the fermion zero mode function by which we prove the existence of the massless fermion on the string-wall composites. We construct rotating hybrid axion-miniboson stars (RHABSs), which are asymptotically flat, stationary, axially symmetric solutions of (3+1)-dimensional Einstein–Klein–Gordon theory. RHABSs consist of an axion field (ground state) and a free complex scalar field (first excited state). The solutions of RHABSs have two types of nodes, including 1 S 2 S state and 1 S 2 P state. For different axion decay constants f a , we present the mass M of RHABSs as a function of the synchronized frequency, as well as the nonsynchronized frequency, and explore the mass M versus the angular momentum J for the synchronized frequency and the nonsynchronized frequency, respectively. We present a comprehensive study exploring the relationship between transport properties and measures of quantum entanglement in the Einstein–Maxwell–Axion–Horndeski theory. By using holographic duality, we study the entanglement measures, holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS), and transport coefficients, for this model and analyze their dependence on free parameters which we classify into action parameters, observable parameters and axion factor. We find contrasting behaviors between HEE and EWCS with respect to observable parameters (charge and temperature), and the axion factor, indicating that they capture different types of quantum correlations. We also find that HEE exhibits positive correlation with both charge and thermal excitations, whereas EWCS exhibits a negative correlation with charge-related conductivities and thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, we find that the Horndeski coupling term, as the modification to standard gravity theory, does not change the qualitative behaviors of the conductivities and the entanglement measures. This paper proposes an alternative mechanism to solve the so-called missing pulsar problem, a standing paradox between the theoretical expectations about the number of pulsars that should exist in the galaxy center of the Milky Way and their absence in the observations. The mechanism is based on the transformation of incident γ rays into hybridized modes, known as axion-polaritons, which can exist inside highly magnetized quark stars with a quark matter phase known as the magnetic dual chiral density wave phase. This phase, which is favored over several other dense matter phases candidates at densities a few times nuclear saturation density, has already passed several important astrophysical tests. In the proposed mechanism, the absence of young magnetars occurs because as electromagnetic waves inside the star can only propagate through the hybridized modes, incident photons coming from a γ -ray burst get transformed into massless and massive axion polaritons by the Primakoff effect. Once thermalized, the massive axion-polaritons can self-gravitate up to a situation where their total mass overpasses the Chandrasekhar limit for these bosons, producing a mini blackhole that collapses the star. We analyze the Axion Electrodynamics in a two-dimensional slab of finite width L containing a homogeneous and isotropic dielectric medium with constant permittivity and permeability. We start from the known decomposition of modes in the nonaxion case and then solve perturbatively the governing equations for the electromagnetic fields to which the axions are also coupled. This is a natural approach, since the finiteness of L destroys the spatial invariance of the theory in the z-direction normal to the plates. In this way, we derive the value of the axion-generated rotation angle of the electric and magnetic fields after their passage through the slab, and use the obtained results to calculate the Casimir force between the two conducting plates. Our calculations make use of the same method as previously outlined by [J. S. Høye and I. Brevik, Eur. Phys. J. Recent advances in photon detectors have provided exceptional sensitivities to dark matter with high angular resolution. Motivated by this, we present a detailed study of photon flux from dark matter decay in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) by focusing on the detectors with arcsecond-level field of view and/or angular resolution. We propose to use differential D -factors since such detectors are sensitive to their dark matter distributions. We carefully estimate the differential D -factors of 35 dSphs. By using the differential D -factors, it turns out that the resulting signal flux can have a more than O (1–10) enhancement compared to conventional estimations. Based on this analysis, we find that the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS) installed on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope can be an excellent dark matter detector for the mass in the eV range, particularly axion-like particles (ALPs). Observing the Draco or Ursa Major II dSphs with the IRCS for O (1) night will enable us to place the most stringent bound for the ALP dark matter in the mass range of 1 eV ≲ m a ≲ 2 eV. Calibration of nuclear‐magnetic‐resonance‐based searches for axion‐like dark matter can be performed by free induction decay (FID) measurements. This manu‐ script describes FID experiments on several solid materials, motivated by the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr) program. Experiments with207Pb nuclear spins in ferroelectrics, lead magnesium niobate‐lead titanate (PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3)2/3−${}_{2/3}-$ (PbTiO3)1/3 (PMN‐PT) and lead zirconium titante PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) are directly relevant to the CASPEr‐electric search for the electric dipole moment interaction of axion‐like dark matter. Experiments with 31P nuclear spins in gadolinium‐doped hydroxypyromorphite Pb4.95Gd0.05(PO4)3OH (HPM:Gd) are used for apparatus calibration. The measurements characterized the nuclear spin ensemble coherence time and the magnetic resonance detection sensitivity for these samples. Calibration is performed using small tip‐angle pulses.
