This article presents a new, RELIC (Real Love In Context) theory of love. The theory contains three subtheories. Two of them constitute an endosystem, or inner system of love. The triangular theory, an interpersonal theory, describes love in term of the intimacy, passion, and commitment one feels toward another person. The theory of love as a story, an intrapersonal theory, describes stories that characterize one's ideal depiction of what love should and potentially could be. The third, extrapersonal subtheory constitutes an ecosystem, or outer system of love. Drawing on the work of Urie Bronfenbrenner, it describes five hierarchically nested environmental systems (microsystem, mesosystem, exosytem, macrosystem, chronosystem) in which love is embedded and that continually affect the love one feels for another. An analysis of plasma density distributions at arbitrary ion–atom collisionality for one-dimensional axially symmetrical cylindrical and annular plasmas is presented. Perturbations of plasma densities caused by a cylindrical probe are studied for arbitrary ion–atom collisionality. Analytical expressions for the plasma characteristics near the probe for low collisionality have been obtained. The plasma was modeled by the hydrodynamic neutral plasma equations, taking into account ionization, ion inertia, and a non-linear ion frictional force, which dominates the plasma transport at low gas pressures. Significant plasma density depletion around the probe has been observed for a wide range of ion–atom collisionality. The presented results predict underestimation of plasma density obtained from the classical Langmuir probe procedure and should provide a better understanding of electrostatic, magnetic, and microwave probes inserted into plasmas at low gas pressure. The kind of transactional, or tit-for-tat giftedness that so many programs identify and develop will not help to create a better world. Yet, if anyone is in a position to create a better world, it is our gifted young people. In this article, roles are presented that can be used to create change in the world. Some of these roles, when applied toward good causes, can be positive—advocate, activist, and champion. Others tend to be negative—fool, fanatic, and spoiler. We should teach in a way that encourages gifted students to become champions of positive causes—to take leadership roles in effecting positive change. We applied a balance theory of wisdom to thinking in the domain of science. In two studies, we administered maximum-performance scales measuring Scientific Wisdom, Scientific Reasoning, Scientific Creativity, and fluid and crystallized intelligence, and a typical-performance scale of self-assessed wisdom. Our Scientific Wisdom scale, along with the Scientific Reasoning scales and a Scientific Creativity scale, loaded on one clear factor separate from the factor(s) on which the psychometric tests of intelligence, SAT and ACT scores, and GPA loaded. These results suggested that the scientific tests were assessing abilities that were different from g, as well as what the SAT/ACT and academic GPA were assessing. The studies are merely a starting point for a relatively new idea—that schools should consider teaching for and assessing scientific wisdom, and that a full analysis of scientific giftedness should include scientific wisdom. Many people support and stand by political candidates in the same way that a person might support a significant other. In two studies, we preliminarily explored the utility of a triangular theory of love proposed for political figures. In the first study, data from 87 university students were used to obtain results relating to levels of intimacy, passion, commitment, and satisfaction for a participant‐chosen political figure. We hypothesized that intimacy, passion, and commitment would predict higher levels of satisfaction with political figures. Correlational analyses revealed significant relationships between all three variables and satisfaction. In stepwise multiple regressions, intimacy and passion retained significant relationships with satisfaction. In the second study, 299 university students reported levels of intimacy, passion, commitment, and satisfaction for three political figures: Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Barack Obama. All three variables were significantly correlated with satisfaction for each candidate. Stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that intimacy and commitment, but not passion, predicted satisfaction for Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Intimacy, passion, and commitment significantly predicted satisfaction for Barack Obama. Voters may experience a kind of love for political figures, and understanding this relationship may have implications for helping voters make informed decisions during elections. This essay questions the framing of socioemotional development as a separate concomitant of cognitive development in gifted individuals. Rather, it argues, first, that socioemotional development of the gifted is not separate from giftedness. Second, socioemotional development is not even cleanly and clearly separable from cognitive development. Third, giftedness and even intelligence do not reside inside the person—they are not personal properties but rather interactions of persons with tasks and situations. We present the main demographic parameters of the Western Siberian pied flycatcher population, nesting in natural habitats, at different stages of population dynamics. The average values, range, boundaries, and direction of changes in the survival of sexually mature individuals, fecundity, and the encounter probability at different ages were analyzed. Using matrix models of population structure and population dynamics, an estimate of the true survival rate of fledglings is given. An interview with Esther Sternberg, an expert on wellness in the built environment, is presented. Sternberg discusses the role of a healthy workplace environment in improving health and wellbeing, as well as the health benefits or important elements to consider when creating a well workspace such as circadian light, windows, reduced noise levels, humidity levels and access to nature. She suggests ways to enhance the indoor environment if there is not much access to the outdoor environment.

Monitoring the use of antimicrobials and the emergence of resistance in animals and people is important for the control of antimicrobial resistance, and for establishing sustainable and effective disease management practices. In this study, we used Enterococcus spp. and Escherichia coli as indicator species to investigate antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and how these change over time, on ten Swedish pig farms. Indoor environmental sock sampling was performed once a month during the entire production cycle of one batch of pigs on each farm, resulting in 60 samples collected in total. Selective culture for E. coli and Enterococcus spp. resulted in 122 isolates of E. coli, 74 isolates of E. faecium, but no isolates of E. faecalis. Microdilution was used to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations for twelve antimicrobial substances in E. coli and fifteen substances in E. faecium. The overall prevalence of resistance was low. Among the E. coli isolates, the proportions non-wild type (resistant, NWT) isolates were as follows: azithromycin and amikacin 1% (n = 1), trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole 2% (n = 3), ampicillin 6% (n = 7) and tetracycline 9% (n = 11). Among the E. faecium isolates, the NWT proportions were: teicoplanin, linezolid and gentamicin 1% (n = 1), daptomycin 3% (n = 2), erythromycin 26% (n = 19), tetracycline 27% (n = 20), quinupristin/dalfopristin 58% (n = 42). The resistance patterns differed between the farms, likely due to different antimicrobial use, biosecurity measures and source of the animals. The NWT prevalence among E. coli decreased over time, whereas no similar trend could be observed in E. faecium. The results of the current study illustrate the complex factors affecting the antimicrobial resistance patterns observed on each farm, indicating that specific practices and risk factors have an impact on the prevalence and type of antimicrobial resistance. Further studies of the farm environments in combination with antimicrobial use and other risk factor data are needed to elucidate the multifaceted drivers of antimicrobial resistance development on livestock farms. Technology alters both perceptions of human intelligence and creativity and the actual processes of intelligence and creativity. Skills that were once important for human intelligence, for example, computational ones, no longer hold anywhere near the same importance they did before the age of computers. The advantage of computers is that they may lead us to focus on what we believe to be more important things than what they have replaced. In the case of penmanship, spelling, or arithmetic computation, such an argument could bear fruit. But in the case of human creativity, the loss of creative skills and attitudes may be a long-term loss to humanity. Generative AI is replicative. It can recombine and re-sort ideas, but it is not clear that it will generate the kinds of paradigm-breaking ideas the world needs right now to solve the serious problems that confront it, such as global climate change, pollution, violence, increasing income disparities, and creeping autocracy. Procedures for identifying the gifted often make use of tests of general intelligence, among other assessments. Robert J. Sternberg recently suggested that identification of the gifted should further involve assessment of what he refers to as adaptive intelligence—the ability to adapt to real-world environments. Such a conception of intelligence is consistent with that of early theorists of intelligence, such as Alfred Binet and David Wechsler, and also fits in with more recent ecological approaches to intelligence. Academic disciplines and professional fields need to engage in ongoing evaluation of their purposes and conceptual frameworks. The complex field of gifted education can benefit from such evaluations, and the refinements that can emerge from them. This article is a discussion between two of the most prominent scholars in the field. The discussion is based on a set of questions that cover much of the field's conceptual and practical territory. While answering the questions, the scholars also respond to each other. They address a wide range of phenomena in the field, including concerns pertaining to identification of the gifted, program development, instructional goals and processes, underrepresentation and other social justice issues, and the need for expansion of ethical awareness, among other topics. Background: Two new missense variants (K68Q and R252H) of the protein kinase DYRK1B were recently reported to cause a monogenetic form of metabolic syndrome with autosomal dominant inheritance (AOMS3). Results: Our in vitro functional analysis reveals that neither of these substitutions eliminates or enhances the catalytic activity of DYRK1B. DYRK1B-K68Q displays reduced nuclear translocation. Conclusion: The pathogenicity of DYRK1B variants does not necessarily correlate with the gain or loss of catalytic activity, but can be due to altered non-enzymatic characteristics such as subcellular localization. WormBase has been the major repository and knowledgebase of information about the genome and genetics of Caenorhabditis elegans and other nematodes of experimental interest for over 2 decades. We have 3 goals: to keep current with the fast-paced C. elegans research, to provide better integration with other resources, and to be sustainable. Here, we discuss the current state of WormBase as well as progress and plans for moving core WormBase infrastructure to the Alliance of Genome Resources (the Alliance). As an Alliance member, WormBase will continue to interact with the C. elegans community, develop new features as needed, and curate key information from the literature and large-scale projects. Background: Rectal bleeding is the most common presenting symptom of colorectal cancer, and guidelines recommend timely follow-up, usually with colonoscopy to ensure timely diagnoses of colorectal cancer. Objective: Identify loop closure rates and vulnerable process points for patients with rectal bleeding. Design: Retrospective cohort study, using medical record review of patients aged ≥ 40 with index diagnosis of rectal bleeding at 2 primary practices—an urban academic practice and affiliated community health center, between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020. Patients were classified as having completed recommended follow-up workup ("closed loop") vs. not ("open loop"). Open loop patient cases were categorized into six types of process failures. Participants: A total of 837 patients had coded diagnoses of rectal bleeding within study window. Sixty-seven were excluded based on prior colectomy, clinical presentation more consistent with upper GI bleed, no rectal bleeding documented on chart review, or expired during the follow-up period, leaving 770 patients included. Main Measures: Primary outcomes were percentages of patient cases classified as "open loops" and distribution of these cases into six categories of process failure that were identified. Key Results: 22.3% of patients (N = 172) failed to undergo timely recommended workup for rectal bleeding. Largest failure categories were patients for whom no procedure was ordered (N = 62, 36%), followed by patients with procedures ordered but never scheduled (N = 44, 26%) or scheduled but subsequently cancelled or not kept (N = 31, 18%). While open loops increased after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, this difference was not significant within our study period. Conclusions: Significant numbers of patients presenting to primary care with rectal bleeding fail to undergo recommended workup. The majority either have no procedure ordered, or procedure ordered but never scheduled or cancelled and not kept, suggesting these are important failure modes to target in future interventions. Ensuring reliable ordering and processes for timely scheduling and completion of procedures represent critical areas for improving the diagnostic process for patients with rectal bleeding in primary care. This study provides an empirical test of a previously proposed assertion that intelligence as adaptation has an attitudinal as well as an ability component. The ability component deals with what the basic knowledge and skills are that underlie intelligence, and how much of each one an individual has. The attitudinal component deals with how an individual chooses to deploy the abilities they have. In other words, to what use are the abilities put? It is argued that it is impossible fully to separate the measurement of the ability component from the attitudinal one. In a diverse population, even taking an intelligence test will show itself to involve an attitude toward the test, which may enhance or detract from performance, as when one sees the test as irrelevant or harmful to one's life, or as a sociocultural misfit to one's life experience. To succeed, people need not only to have abilities, but attitudes that put those abilities to effective use to accomplish individuals' life goals. In the study, we found that intelligent attitudes are related, but non-identical, to germane constructs, such as wisdom, the need for cognition, creativity, and openness to experience. Scores on the attitudinal measure were not related to scores on tests of fluid intelligence and academic abilities/achievement. Our article explores the challenges that faced Jewish and Arab kindergarten teachers, and their different ways of coping with those challenges, during the implementation of the programme 'My Diverse Kindergarten' in three mixed cities in Israel. The programme aimed at reducing prejudices and improving the relationship between Jews and Arabs in these cities. Based on data from a qualitative study, including interviews with Arab and Jewish kindergarten teachers, we examined the challenges related to the encounter with the other, and identified a variety of coping patterns, mostly related to the ethnic and professional identities of the kindergarten teachers. Research suggests that parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent drinking indirectly through negative urgency, a form of impulsivity that is particularly associated with high-risk drinking. Moreover, childhood mechanisms of risk may play a role in this developmental chain such that childhood temperament and parenting may be mechanisms through which parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent negative urgency and drinking behavior. Therefore, the current study tested whether parental substance use disorder was indirectly associated with adolescent drinking frequency through childhood temperament (i.e., "dysregulated irritability") and adolescent negative urgency, and whether relations differed by levels of maternal support and consistency of discipline. Data come from a multigenerational, longitudinal study of familial substance use disorder (N = 276, Mage in childhood = 6.28 (SD = 1.16), Mage in adolescence = 15.86 (SD = 1.56), 45.3% female). Findings indicated that parental substance use disorder indirectly predicted adolescent drinking through both childhood dysregulated irritability and adolescent negative urgency (mediated pathways). This indirect relation was stronger at higher vs. lower levels of maternal support but did not vary by maternal consistency of discipline. Parental substance use disorder also indirectly predicted adolescent drinking separately through childhood dysregulated irritability and negative urgency. Findings thus suggest that childhood dysregulated irritability may be an early marker of risk toward high-risk personality traits and behavior in adolescence that are associated with having a parental history of substance use disorder. Findings also suggest that increased maternal support may only be helpful in buffering risk for those with low levels of dysregulated irritability. Prevention efforts focused on childhood emotion regulation and emotion-based action may be useful in preventing adolescent risk behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The endometrial epithelium and underlying stroma undergo profound changes to support and limit embryo adhesion and invasion, which occur in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle during the window of implantation. This coincides with a peak in progesterone and estradiol production. We hypothesized that the interplay between hormone-induced changes in the mechanical properties of the endometrial epithelium and stroma supports this process. To study it, we used hormone-responsive endometrial adenocarcinoma-derived Ishikawa cells growing on substrates of different stiffness. We showed that Ishikawa monolayers on soft substrates are more tightly clustered and uniform than on stiff substrates. Probing for mechanical alterations, we found accelerated stress–relaxation after apical nanoindentation in hormone-stimulated monolayers on stiff substrates. Traction force microscopy furthermore revealed an increased number of foci with high traction in the presence of estradiol and progesterone on soft substrates. The detection of single cells and small cell clusters positive for the intermediate filament protein vimentin and the progesterone receptor further underscored monolayer heterogeneity. Finally, adhesion assays with trophoblast-derived AC-1M-88 spheroids were used to examine the effects of substrate stiffness and steroid hormones on endometrial receptivity. This article proposes a duplex model for understanding giftedness. The first part of the duplex is the set of gifted skills and attitudes that one possesses as a result of heredity, the environment, and their interaction. It is the input that one has acquired from one's life experiences. The second part of the duplex is the utilization or deployment of gifted skills and attitudes. On this view, giftedness, like intelligence, in practice heavily depends upon one's attitudes toward deployment of abilities, not just the abilities themselves. It is the output that one gifts back to the world. Someone may possess giftedness in the first part of the duplex but give very little back in the second part. Alternatively, someone may make gifted contributions but not be identified as having the characteristics usually associated with giftedness. This can result because giftedness can be either trait-like or state-like. Some people act in gifted ways as a function of their interactions with tasks and situations, although they would not have been predicted to be individuals who would act that way. Solid state NMR is widely used to study the orientation and other structural features of proteins and peptides in lipid bilayers. Using data obtained by PISEMA (Polarization Inversion Spin Exchange at Magic Angle) experiments, periodic spectral patterns arise from well‐aligned α‐helical molecules. Significant problems in the interpretation of PISEMA spectra may arise for systems that do not form perfectly defined secondary structures, like α‐helices, or the signal pattern is disturbed by molecular motion. Here, we present a new method that combines molecular dynamics simulation with tensorial orientational constraints (MDOC) and chemical shift tensor calculations for the simulation and interpretation of PISEMA‐like spectra. The calculations include the spectra arising from non α‐helical molecules and molecules with non‐uniform intrinsic mobility. In a first step, dipolar or quadrupolar interaction tensors drive molecular rotations and reorientations to obtain the proper mean values as observed in corresponding NMR experiments. In a second step, the coordinate snapshots of the MDOC simulations are geometry optimized with the isotropic 15N chemical shifts as constraints using Bond Polarization Theory (BPT) to provide reliable 15N CS tensor data. The averaged dipolar 1H‐15N couplings and the δzz tensor components can then be combined to simulate PISEMA patterns. We apply this method to the ß‐helical peptide gramicidin A (gA) and demonstrate that this method enables the assignment of most PISEMA resonances. In addition, MDOC simulations provide local order parameters for the calculated sites. These local order parameters reveal large differences in backbone mobility between L‐ and D‐amino acids of gA. Aims Cyclophilin A (CyPA) induces leucocyte recruitment and platelet activation upon release into the extracellular space. Extracellular CyPA therefore plays a critical role in immuno-inflammatory responses in tissue injury and thrombosis upon platelet activation. To date, CD147 (EMMPRIN) has been described as the primary receptor mediating extracellular effects of CyPA in platelets and leucocytes. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) shares inflammatory and prothrombotic properties and has also been found to have similar ligands as CD147. In this study, we investigated the role of RAGE as a previously unknown interaction partner for CyPA. Methods and results Confocal imaging, proximity ligation, co-immunoprecipitation, and atomic force microscopy were performed and demonstrated an interaction of CyPA with RAGE on the cell surface. Static and dynamic cell adhesion and chemotaxis assays towards extracellular CyPA using human leucocytes and leucocytes from RAGE-deficient Ager −/− mice were conducted. Inhibition of RAGE abrogated CyPA-induced effects on leucocyte adhesion and chemotaxis in vitro. Accordingly, Ager −/− mice showed reduced leucocyte recruitment and endothelial adhesion towards CyPA in vivo. In wild-type mice, we observed a downregulation of RAGE on leucocytes when endogenous extracellular CyPA was reduced. We furthermore evaluated the role of RAGE for platelet activation and thrombus formation upon CyPA stimulation. CyPA-induced activation of platelets was found to be dependent on RAGE, as inhibition of RAGE, as well as platelets from Ager −/− mice showed a diminished activation and thrombus formation upon CyPA stimulation. CyPA-induced signalling through RAGE was found to involve central signalling pathways including the adaptor protein MyD88, intracellular Ca2+ signalling, and NF-κB activation. Conclusion We propose RAGE as a hitherto unknown receptor for CyPA mediating leucocyte as well as platelet activation. To improve the estimate of the shape of a reaction-time distribution, it is sometimes desirable to combine several samples, drawn from different sessions or different subjects. How should these samples be combined? This paper provides an evaluation of four combination methods, two that are currently in use (the bin-means histogram, often called "Vincentizing", and quantile averaging) and two that are new (linear-transform pooling and shape averaging). The evaluation makes use of a modern method for describing the shape of a distribution, based on L-moments, rather than the traditional method, based on central moments. Also provided is an introduction to shape descriptors based on L-moments, whose advantages over central moments—less biased and less sensitive to outliers—are demonstrated. Whether traditional or modern shape descriptions are employed, the combination methods currently in use, especially bin-means histograms, based on averaged bin means, prove to be substantially inferior to the new methods. Averaged bin-means themselves are less deficient when estimating differences between distribution shapes, as in delta plots, but are nonetheless inferior to linear-transform pooling. This article proposes a sketch of a new theory of wisdom based on the tree of philosophy (TOP) model. It is argued that philosophy—love of wisdom—has developed branches over the millennia that reflect the different aspects of thought and action that need to be considered in a comprehensive theory of wisdom. Although there is not a full consensus on what these branches are, the TOP usually has as branches, at minimum, metaphysics—including epistemology and ontology—and ethics, logic, aesthetics, hermeneutics, and axiology. Each of these branches is considered, and its implications for a philosophically based theory of wisdom are considered. Whereas some other theories of wisdom attempt to synthesize recent psychological attempts to understand wisdom, the TOP theory attempts to synthesize the contribution of millennia of philosophical inquiry. Background: This study aimed to describe sequences of vocational rehabilitation services among individuals with approved vocational rehabilitation in Germany and to identify typical service sequences. Methods: We used administrative data on vocational rehabilitation services and questionnaire data on health and work ability to describe frequencies and sequences of vocational rehabilitation services financed by the Federal German Pension Insurance. Through sequence analysis, we were able to map the service sequences. We did cluster analyses to identify typical different service sequences. Results: Our sample included 1,652 individuals with 2,584 services. Integration services and two-year vocational retraining were the most common services. We could identify three different service clusters around integration services: shorter ones, followed by employer benefits and without employer benefits. We found two different clusters around two-year vocational retraining: shorter and longer clusters. Two-year vocational retraining was more often initiated by preparatory services and followed by employer benefits than integration services. Longer services in both clusters were associated with better baseline data for physical health, work ability, risk of future work disability, and younger age than shorter services. People in two-year-vocational retraining reported at baseline better general health, better work ability, low risk of future work disability, and less mental illness compared to people in integration services. Conclusions: Multiple services, that is, sequences of services, were more likely to occur among individuals with more complex services like two-year vocational retraining. Utilization of complex services and longer services was influenced by health, age, risk of future work disability, and education. In this exchange, the authors each address five questions about creativity, and then provide a final synthesizing response. The five questions they address are: (1) What is creativity? Are there different processes, types, or kinds of creativity, and if so, what are they? (2) What are the major obstacles to people thinking and acting creatively? (3) Do you believe that creativity is intrinsically positive? Why or why not? (4) What are the main ways in which schools and parents should develop creativity in young people? (5) Can creativity be measured? If so, how should creativity be measured, and under what kinds of circumstances? Their answers highlight both similarities and differences in their points of view on creativity as a phenomenon and approaches to theorizing about it, studying it, teaching for it, and measuring it. This article discusses a problem in the field of giftedness—the meaning and deployment of giftedness in authoritarian systems, or in declining, failing, or pseudo-democracies. This problem exists for much of the world's population yet seems to be relatively little discussed. The article opens with a consideration of what the problem is. It then discusses how widespread it is—it applies to most of the world's population. Indeed, much of what is discussed in teaching of the gifted, with regard to both content and pedagogy, truly can be applied fully only to those who live in relatively free countries, as wide-ranging creative and critical thinking may be suppressed in nondemocratic societies. The article then discusses the roles individuals can play in declining or non-free societies, and the defense mechanisms they use to justify certain roles. Researchers have argued that many leaders, such as CEOs and politicians, tend to possess narcissistic traits. At healthy and productive levels, narcissistic traits, such as self-promotion, may actually be an advantage to achieving success in some fields. Yet, few researchers have explored gifted narcissists as a twice-exceptionality. This article discusses the gifted narcissist profile and grandiose narcissism in particular. Following a brief introduction to key terms, the gifted narcissist profile is explored through the augmented theory of successful intelligence. The impact of giftedness on individuals with a narcissistic personality disorder is discussed in terms of positive and negative effects. We extend the analytic theory presented by Sternberg et al. and Bialy & Sternberg for the production of atomic hydrogen (H i) via far-ultraviolet (FUV) photodissociation at the boundaries of dense interstellar molecular (H2) clouds to also include the effects of penetrating (low-energy) cosmic rays (CRs) for the growth of the total H i column densities. We compute the steady-state abundances of the H i and H2 in one-dimensional gas slabs in which the FUV photodissociation rates are reduced by depth-dependent H2 self-shielding and dust absorption and the CR ionization rates are either constant or reduced by transport effects. The solutions for the H i and H2 density profiles and the integrated H i columns depend primarily on the ratios I UV/ Rn and ζ / Rn, where I UV is the intensity of the photodissociating FUV field, ζ is the H2 CR ionization rate, n is the hydrogen gas density, and R is the dust surface H2 formation rate coefficient. We present computations for a wide range of FUV field strengths, CR ionization rates, and dust-to-gas ratios. We develop analytic expressions for the growth of the H i column densities. For Galactic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) with multiphased (warm/cold) H i envelopes, the interior CR zones will dominate the production of the H i only if ζ ≳ 4.5 × 10 − 16 × (M GMC / 10 6 M ⊙) − 1 / 2 s−1, where M GMC is the GMC mass, and including attenuation of the CR fluxes. For most Galactic GMCs and conditions, FUV photodissociation dominates over CR ionization for the production of the H i column densities. Comparing genomic and biological characteristics across multiple species is essential to using model systems to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human biology and disease and to translate mechanistic insights from studies in model organisms for clinical applications. Building a scalable knowledge commons platform that supports cross-species comparison of rich, expertly curated knowledge regarding gene function, phenotype, and disease associations available for model organisms and humans is the primary mission of the Alliance of Genome Resources (the Alliance). The Alliance is a consortium of seven model organism knowledgebases (mouse, rat, yeast, nematode, zebrafish, frog, fruit fly) and the Gene Ontology resource. The Alliance uses a common set of gene ortholog assertions as the basis for comparing biological annotations across the organisms represented in the Alliance. The major types of knowledge associated with genes that are represented in the Alliance database currently include gene function, phenotypic alleles and variants, human disease associations, pathways, gene expression, and both protein–protein and genetic interactions. The Alliance has enhanced the ability of researchers to easily compare biological annotations for common data types across model organisms and human through the implementation of shared programmatic access mechanisms, data-specific web pages with a unified "look and feel", and interactive user interfaces specifically designed to support comparative biology. The modular infrastructure developed by the Alliance allows the resource to serve as an extensible "knowledge commons" capable of expanding to accommodate additional model organisms. Cultural intelligence is one's ability to adapt when confronted with problems arising in interactions with people or artifacts of cultures other than one's own. In this study, we explored two maximum-performance tests of cultural intelligence. One, used in previous research, measured cultural intelligence in the context of an individual conducting a business trip in another culture. The second, new to this research, measured cultural intelligence in the context of meeting someone from another culture while one is in the context of one's own culture. So, the difference between the two tests was whether one was in one's own culture or another and whether the individual who most had to adapt was oneself or someone else. We found that cultural intelligence in the two contexts was essentially the same construct. Cultural intelligence as measured by a typical-performance test is a different construct from cultural intelligence as measured by a maximum-performance test. In this research, general intelligence showed some limited correlation with cultural intelligence as measured by a maximum-performance, but not a typical-performance test. Mongolia's fabulous mineral wealth has led to competition and conflict amongst multiple stakeholders. Here we examine local struggles over extraction and export in the Sino-Mongolia Borderlands to offer a perspective on contemporary rural governance transformations in mining frontiers. Grounding years of in-country research with in-depth participant insights, we present and analyze the dilemmas faced by local government actors in Mongolia's Gobi mining belt in order to problematize the dichotomy between conflict or cooperation on the steppe. Given the fleeting and inherently environmentally destructive nature of open-pit mineral extraction on land traditionally used by mobile pastoralists, how do local authorities negotiate for a better future for their locality and constituents? Drawing inspiration from theoretical work on ruination, we highlight the material and spatial elements of contestations over land, territory and development. By leveraging laws related to environmental protection, bureaucratic procedures and corporate social responsibility, local authorities have found creative ways to slow down the physical destruction of their lands from mineral extraction, salvage space for traditional livelihoods and capture benefits for local investment. These forms of institutional resistance, however, reveal the weakening of local institutions in rural governance as local authorities and citizens are excluded from large-scale development decision-making processes. In this final essay, we summarize some of the main themes of this special issue of the Roeper Review dedicated to the scholarly and educational contributions of Marcia Gentry. Our goal is to provide a broad sweep of her contributions: Specifics can be found in the individual articles. The late Marcia Gentry sought equity in the identification and instruction of the gifted. This was a noble and proper goal: Inequity has been a problem in the field of giftedness since the very beginning. A related challenge that feeds into the inequity problem is that educators often look for the wrong thing. What matters is not merely how gifted a person is, or how many gifts they possess, but rather what they do with those gifts. Many of the problems in today's world derive from people who are gifted and then use their gifts for selfish and even narcissistic ends. Background: SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants have the potential to impact vaccine effectiveness and duration of vaccine-derived immunity. We analyzed U.S. multi-jurisdictional COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough surveillance data to examine potential waning of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection for the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b) primary vaccination series by age. Methods: Weekly numbers of SARS-CoV-2 infections during January 16, 2022–May 28, 2022 were analyzed by age group from 22 U.S. jurisdictions that routinely linked COVID-19 case surveillance and immunization data. A life table approach incorporating line-listed and aggregated COVID-19 case datasets with vaccine administration and U.S. Census data was used to estimate hazard rates of SARS-CoV-2 infections, hazard rate ratios (HRR) and percent reductions in hazard rate comparing unvaccinated people to people vaccinated with a Pfizer-BioNTech primary series only, by age group and time since vaccination. Results: The percent reduction in hazard rates for persons 2 weeks after vaccination with a Pfizer-BioNTech primary series compared with unvaccinated persons was lowest among children aged 5–11 years at 35.5% (95% CI: 33.3%, 37.6%) compared to the older age groups, which ranged from 68.7%–89.6%. By 19 weeks after vaccination, all age groups showed decreases in the percent reduction in the hazard rates compared with unvaccinated people; with the largest declines observed among those aged 5–11 and 12–17 years and more modest declines observed among those 18 years and older. Conclusions: The decline in vaccine protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection observed in this study is consistent with other studies and demonstrates that national case surveillance data were useful for assessing early signals in age-specific waning of vaccine protection during the initial period of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant predominance. The potential for waning immunity during the Omicron period emphasizes the importance of continued monitoring and consideration of optimal timing and provision of booster doses in the future. Lurking behind every conception of intelligence—whether an implicit (folk) or explicit (expert-generated) conception—is an underlying theory of meaning that specifies the form the theory of intelligence does and, indeed, can take. These underlying theories of meaning become presuppositions for the conception's form. The theories of meaning have different origins—for example, psycholinguistic, philosophical, and anthropological. This essay reviews the different underlying theories of meaning and proposes a new historical causal-chain theory of conceptions of intelligence. The underlying theories of meaning affect the flexibility and modifiability of laypersons' (implicit) and experts' (explicit) conceptions of intelligence. This review paper explores the role of human taste panels and artificial neural networks (ANNs) in taste-masking paediatric drug formulations. Given the ethical, practical, and regulatory challenges of employing children, young adults (18–40) can serve as suitable substitutes due to the similarity in their taste sensitivity. Taste panellists need not be experts in sensory evaluation so long as a reference product is used during evaluation; however, they should be screened for bitterness taste detection thresholds. For a more robust evaluation during the developmental phase, considerations of a scoring system and the calculation of an acceptance value may be beneficial in determining the likelihood of recommending a formulation for further development. On the technological front, artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be exploited in taste-masking optimisation of medicinal formulations as they can model complex relationships between variables and enable predictions not possible previously to optimise product profiles. Machine learning classifiers may therefore tackle the challenge of predicting the bitterness intensity of paediatric formulations. While advancements have been made, further work is needed to identify effective taste-masking techniques for specific drug molecules. Continuous refinement of machine learning algorithms, using human panellist acceptability scores, can aid in enhancing paediatric formulation development and overcoming taste-masking challenges. Two implicit metaphors can be seen as having dominated the study of the gifted—the savings bank and the investment bank. In the savings-bank metaphor, people have differential levels of IQ or general intelligence, which is viewed as determining whether they are gifted. Their cognitive ability is their metaphorical "money in the bank." In the investment-bank metaphor, people are seen as having differential investments in varied kinds of abilities and talents. Their pattern of abilities is their metaphorical portfolio of investments. A better implicit metaphor might be the foundation, however, whose effectiveness is judged by the worthiness of the transformational causes to which it contributes and the effectiveness of the use of the foundation's assets toward these causes. Myside bias, a form of confirmation bias, is a major impediment to scientific thinking. It results in scientists, potential scientists, and consumers of science drawing conclusions that do not follow from data but rather that follow from prior scientific, ideological beliefs. Gifted people are at least as susceptible to these biases as are other people. We propose in this article a set of techniques for combating such bias. In particular, we suggest that gifted (and other) individuals seeking to draw scientific conclusions put themselves in the place of various individuals involved in scientific refereeing—in particular, of reviewers with varying prior predispositions (e.g., reviewers with different paradigmatic worldviews and reviewers who are picayune critics) and journal editors. Through these techniques, gifted individuals may spare themselves embarrassments that they might otherwise encounter, not despite, but even because of their own superior intellects. Topics covered include the interview questions and sample participant quotes, the prevalent barriers to care reported by the participants, and recommendations by participants for structuring telehealth.

Background: In recent years, the downward trajectory of malaria transmission has slowed and, in some places, reversed. New tools are needed to further reduce malaria transmission. One approach that has received recent attention is a novel house-based intervention comprising window screening (S) and general house repairs to make the house more mosquito proof, together with EaveTubes (ET) that provide an innovative way of targeting mosquitoes with insecticides as they search for human hosts at night. The combined approach of Screening + EaveTubes (SET) essentially turns the house into a 'lure and kill' device. Methods: This study evaluated the impact of SET on malaria infection prevalence in Côte d'Ivoire and compares the result in the primary outcome, malaria case incidence. Malaria infection prevalence was measured in a cross-sectional survey in 40 villages, as part of a cluster-randomised trial evaluating the impact of SET on malaria case incidence. Results: Infection prevalence, measured by rapid diagnostic test (RDT), was 50.4% and 36.7% in the control arm and intervention arm, respectively, corresponding to an odds ratio of 0.57 (0.45–0.71), p < 0.0001). There was moderate agreement between RDT and microscopy results, with a reduction in odds of infection of 36% recorded when infection was measured by microscopy. Prevalence measured by RDT correlated strongly with incidence at a cluster level. Conclusions: In addition to reducing malaria case incidence, house screening and EaveTubes substantially reduced malaria infection prevalence 18 months after installation. Infection prevalence may be a good metric to use for evaluating malaria interventions in areas of similar transmission levels to this setting. Objective: Further test mechanisms of the CHOICES intervention by replicating analyses of the experiential and behavioral processes of change (POC) for alcohol and for contraception as mediators of the intervention for reducing risk of alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) using data from a more recent trial, CHOICES Plus (CP). Method: As in the prior study, replication models examined indirect paths from intervention to experiential POC for alcohol at 3 months, to behavioral POC at 9 months, to risky drinking and risk of AEP at 9 months and experiential POC for contraception at 3 months, to behavioral POC at 9 months, and to ineffective contraception and risk of AEP at 9 months. To test the temporal relationship, additional models examined the indirect path from behavioral POC for alcohol and POC for contraception at 3 months, to the experiential POC at 9 months, and to risk of AEP at 9 months. A final model tested the mediation of experiential and behavioral POC assessed at 3 months. Results: There was an indirect effect of the intervention on risky drinking (total indirect effect = −.13, 95% confidence interval [CI] [−.32, −.02]) but not AEP via the alcohol POC. There was an indirect effect of the intervention on ineffective contraception (total indirect effect = −.27, 95% CI [−.55, −.07]) and AEP (total indirect effect = −.22, 95% CI [−.46, −.06]) via the contraception POC. Conclusions: This study completely replicated the prior indirect effects of the CHOICES intervention on the targeted risk behaviors through the experiential and behavioral POC for each behavior. Findings support the utility of the POC for informing health behavior change interventions. We interrogate the interrelations of race and gentrification in three Chicago neighborhoods of historical significance to Black, Mexican, and Puerto Rican residents. Our previous work indicates that historical legacies of structural racism mean that gentrification works differently in each area, although the extant literature has not directly addressed how race fuels local valuation regimes. For each neighborhood we provide GIS mapping of 30 years of property parcel data and Census block data on race, compared with a parcel level visual scan of material conditions in the built environment. Changes in value at the block level reveal value assigned to whiteness irrespective of material improvement and run counter to standard explanations of gentrification but closely align with a model of racial capitalism. We bridge the gap between qualitative and quantitative research by mapping the everyday life of racial change that is felt and known by residents of color in Chicago. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reviews the implications of many of the major schools in the history of psychology for understanding giftedness and its inner workings: operationist, psychometric, psychoanalytic, associationist, behaviorist, Gestalt, cognitive, humanistic/positive psychology, functionalist/pragmatic/constructivist, cultural, and biological. Each paradigm has elucidated different aspects of human nature and functioning, and each has somewhat different implications for how we can understand giftedness. No one paradigm can provide complete understanding of giftedness. Rather, the paradigms should be viewed as different windows toward understanding giftedness, all of which together tell us much more than any individual one. It is regrettable that so many theorists and practitioners have locked themselves into an operationist paradigm, which simply accepts current measurement operations as sufficient for identifying and developing giftedness. This study examined reasons and obstacles for changing risky alcohol use behavior among Latina adults at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. Using qualitative methods, data from CHOICES Plus intervention sessions of Latinas (N = 59) were analyzed. Reasons for wanting to change risky alcohol use centered on health, parenting, interpersonal conflict, control, and risk of harm. Obstacles included social obstacles, belief that drinking was not risky, and drinking to manage mood. Differences were found across level of acculturation. Knowledge about salient motives and obstacles is critical to addressing the needs and strengths of Latinas at risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
