Magnetometer cell wall coat molecules play an important role in preserving the lifetime of pumped alkali metal atoms for use in magnetometers that are capable of measuring very small magnetic fields. The goal of this study is to help rationalize the design of the cell coat molecules. Rubidium-87 is studied in terms of its interaction with three template cell coat molecules: ethane, ethene, and methyltrichlorosilane (MeTS). Ab initio electronic structure methods are applied to investigate the effect that the coat molecules have on the 2S ground state and 2P excited state of 87Rb. We find that, from the ab initio results, the three template molecules have differing effects, with MeTS having the largest effect on the ground state and ethane or ethene having the largest effect on the non-degenerate excited states. In the field of psychological science, behavioral performance in computer-based cognitive tasks often exhibits poor reliability. The absence of reliable measures of cognitive processes contributes to non-reproducibility in the field and impedes the investigation of individual differences. Specifically in visual search paradigms, response time-based measures have shown poor test–retest reliability and internal consistency across attention capture and distractor suppression, but one study has demonstrated the potential for oculomotor measures to exhibit superior reliability. Therefore, in this study, we investigated three datasets to compare the reliability of learning-dependent distractor suppression measured via distractor fixations (oculomotor capture) and latency to fixate the target (fixation times). Our findings reveal superior split-half reliability of oculomotor capture compared to that of fixation times regardless of the critical distractor comparison, with the reliability of oculomotor capture in most cases falling within the range that is acceptable for the investigation of individual differences. We additionally find that older adults have superior oculomotor reliability compared with young adults, potentially addressing a significant limitation in the aging literature of high variability in response time measures due to slower responses. Our findings highlight the utility of measuring eye movements in the pursuit of reliable indicators of distractor processing and the need to further test and develop additional measures in other sensory domains to maximize statistical power, reliability, and reproducibility. Purpose: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis is a surgical challenge due to muscle weakness, bone deformities or post-polio syndrome (PPS). Few data exist to determine the factors contributing to poor functional results. This study aimed: (1) to describe a cohort of patients with poliomyelitis sequelae who underwent TKA; (2) to examine risk factors for poor functional outcome. Methods: A monocentric retrospective cohort study of all patients with poliomyelitis sequelae who underwent TKA between January 2006 and December 2019. Clinical, functional outcomes, radiographic results and occurrence of complications were collected. Results: A total of 22 patients (24 knees) were included in the analysis, with a mean follow-up of 6.6 years (from 2 to 13.7 years). There was an improvement in KSS (28 +/- 23 vs. 81 +/- 6, respectively; p < 0.0001) as well as functional KSS (25 +/- 12 vs. 57.5 +/- 21, respectively; p = 0.0001). There was less occurrence of annual knee giving way episodes after total knee replacement (11.9+/-16.1 vs. 5.1+/-13.7, respectively; p = 0.04). Even though the total knee replacement allowed a slight recurvatum, it was smaller than the preoperative recurvatum (13° vs. 8°, respectively; p = 0.04). Seven complications with reintervention (7/24; 29%) were found. The presence of a residual post operative recurvatum correlated with better KSS (ρ = 0.53, CI95% [0.15; 0.77]; p = 0.008). The number of postoperative annual knee giving way episodes was inversely correlated with persistent postoperative recurvatum (ρ = -0.42, CI95% [-0.69; -0.01]; p = 0.04) but was not correlated with the type of constraint (ρ = -0.26, CI95% [-0.6; 0.15]; p = 0.21) nor with quadricipital muscle strength (ρ = 0.21, CI95% [-0.21; 0.56]; p = 0.33). Conclusion: TKA has a good mid-term functional outcome for knee osteoarthritis in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis. Preserving a residual recurvatum postoperatively gives better clinical results without increasing the risk of ligament instability or early aseptic loosening. Level of evidence: IV. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a cureless neurodegenerative disease recognized as the most prevalent form of dominantly inherited ataxia worldwide. The main hallmark of SCA3 is the expansion of a polyglutamine tract located in the C-terminal of Ataxin-3 (or ATXN3) protein, that triggers the mis-localization and toxic aggregation of ATXN3 in neuronal cells. The propensity of wild type and polyglutamine-expanded ATXN3 proteins to aggregate has been extensively studied over the last decades. In vitro studies with mass spectrometry techniques revealed a time-dependent aggregation of polyglutamine-expanded ATXN3 that occurs in several steps, leading to fibrils formation, a high status of aggregation. For in vivo experiments though, the techniques commonly used to demonstrate aggregation of polyglutamine proteins, such as filter trap assays, SDS-PAGE and SDS-AGE, are unable to unequivocally show all the stages of aggregation of wild type and polyglutamine-expanded ATXN3 proteins. Here we describe a systematic and detailed analysis of different known techniques to detect the various forms of both wild type and pathologic ATXN3 aggregates, and we discuss the power and limitation of each strategy. Purpose Methods Results Conclusions Level of Evidence In modern anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, the focus is usually on anatomical reconstruction to restore the natural kinematics of the knee. The individual optimal positioning of the ACL footprints (FPs) in primary surgery is still controversial and, especially in revision surgery, difficult to realize surgically. In this regard, a new MRI‐based sequence, the Compressed Lateral and anteroposterior Anatomic Systematic Sequence (CLASS) with marked femoral and tibial FPs as a template, could help. The purpose of this study was to (1) validate the reliability and reproducibility of the localization of femoral and tibial FPs of ACL in the generation of CLASS and (2) compare the identification of ACL FPs by CLASS with previously described methods.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of uninjured knees from a predominantly young cohort is used to apply the CLASS algorithm. ACL FPs were subsequently identified by a board‐certified radiologist and an orthopaedic knee surgeon. Intraobserver reliability and interobserver reproducibility were assessed. Measurements of the ACL FPs according to established methods were performed and compared with the results from the literature.Identification of ACL FPs and generation of CLASS images resulted in ‘almost perfect’ reliability and reproducibility. Most measurements also showed ‘almost perfect’ consistency. Statistical analysis showed significant variations between the deep‐shallow and high‐low positions when compared to the published literature.The CLASS MRI sequence is a reliable and reproducible method for identifying ACL FPs. There is growing research interest in the fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda, a polyphagous insect that is a major pest of maize crops worldwide. We investigated the relationship between planting date of maize and FAW infestation in South Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in two sampling seasons (September to October 2020 and February to March 2021). Five planting dates were considered for 45 fields in each season. The incidence, severity of attack and larval density of FAW were assessed at the 8-leaf stage (V8) of maize development in monoculture and intercropping systems. Planting period, classified as late or early, had a strong influence on FAW larval density, incidence and severity. The results showed that the late planting period (mainly on 30 October in season-1 and 30 March in season-2) had the highest larval density, incidence and severity of attack compared to the early planting period (15 September in season-1 and 01 Mars in season-2). During the season-1, five larval stages were found in the same field, whereas all larval stages were present in season-2, regardless of planting period. High densities of L4, L5 and L6 larvae were much more associated with late planting and incidence appeared to be highest when these larvae were present. The presence of L2 and L3 larval stages was observed in maize cropping systems intercropped with soybean and peanuts, while maize in monoculture and intercropped with cassava and beans was colonized by L4, L5 and L6 larvae. This study highlights the existence of different maize planting dates in South Kivu and demonstrates that late plantings have significant FAW infestations compared to early plantings. For an educational purpose, we develop the Python package AutoFreeFEM which generates all ingredients for shape optimization with non-linear multi-physics in FreeFEM and also outputs the expressions for use in LaTeX. As an input, the objective function and the weak form of the problem have to be specified only once. This ensures consistency between the simulation code and its documentation. In particular, AutoFreeFEM provides the linearization of the state equation, the adjoint problem, the shape derivative, as well as a basic implementation of the level-set based mesh evolution method for shape optimization. For the computation of shape derivatives, we utilize the mathematical Lagrangian approach for differentiating PDE-constrained shape functions. Differentiation is done symbolically using SymPy. In numerical experiments, we verify the accuracy of the computed derivatives. Finally, we showcase the capabilities of AutoFreeFEM by considering shape optimization of a non-linear diffusion problem, linear and non-linear elasticity problems, a thermo-elasticity problem, and a fluid–structure interaction problem. In many Western countries, the ideology of intensive parenting has gained prominence in the discourse of experts, policymakers, and within popular culture. This ideology emphasizes deep parental involvement in emotional, physical, and financial aspects (Lee et al., 2014). Meeting these demanding standards can exert significant pressure on parents, especially on mothers often considered as the primary caregiver. Moreover, these pressures may prompt parents to be highly, and potentially overly, involved in their children's lives. Using data from 146 parent dyads (N = 292 parents; Mage = 47.57 years) of Swiss adolescents, the study explores parental perceptions of pressure to be a perfect parent and its association with one positive (responsiveness) and two negative types of involvement (overprotection and overvaluation). Thereby, we estimated Actor-Partner Interdependence Models (APIM) to examine mutual influences between mothers and fathers. The results indicated that mothers reported experiencing significantly more pressure than fathers. We found evidence for a positive association between perceptions of pressure and parental overprotection among both parents. The results also showed that there was a significant association between feelings of pressure and overvaluation, but only among fathers. Associations between pressure and responsiveness were not significant, and no significant partner effects were observed in any of the models. In conclusion, mothers particularly face heightened pressure to be perfect parents, but both parents may adapt their parenting strategies in response to perceived pressure to be perfect as a parent. Purpose: To provide a detailed examination of the arterial blood supply to the middle third of the nasal skin through cadaveric dissections, identifying the primary arterial sources and their precise locations. Methods: Cadaveric dissections were performed on 14 hemifaces from fresh specimens. The main feeding arteries and their branches were carefully dissected under magnification. Morphometric characteristics of the specimens, along with the caliber of the arteries and their branches vascularizing the mid-third nasal skin were recorded, and statistically analyzed. Results: Four main arteries were identified as responsible for the blood supply to the mid-third of the nasal skin: the facial artery, the nasal branch of the infra-orbital artery (nbIOA), the dorsal nasal artery, and the upper branches of the columellar plexus. The lateral nasal artery (LNA) and the nbIOA were the main contributors, each providing significantly larger arterial branches than the other sources (1.8 ± 0.8 branches of 0.67 ± 0.2 mm for the LNA, p-value < 0.001–1 ± 0 branches of 0.55 ± 0.17 mm for the nbIOA, p-value < 0.01). The largest arterial branch consistently penetrated the lateral and inferior angle of the mid-third nasal skin, originated either from the LNA or nbIOA. Conclusion: The LNA and nbIOA endorse crucial roles in the arterial blood supply to the mid-third nasal skin. Despite the variability in vascular anatomy, a consistent pattern of arterial supply with convergence in the depth of the alarfacial groove was observed. Objectives: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by the remodeling of the pulmonary vascular bed leading to elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure. Oxidized fatty acids, such as hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs), play a critical role in PAH. We have previously established that dietary supplementation of 15-HETE is sufficient to cause PH in mice, suggesting a role for the gut-lung axis. However, the mechanisms are not known. Approach: Analysis of RNA-seq data obtained from the lungs and intestines of mice on 15-HETE diet together with transcriptomic data from PAH patient lungs identified IFN inducible protein 44 (IFI44) as the only gene significantly upregulated in mice and humans. We demonstrate that IFI44 is also significantly increased in PBMCs from PAH patients. In mice, 15-HETE diet enhances IFI44 and its inducer IFN⍺4 expression sequentially in the intestine first and then in the lungs. IFI44 expression in PAH is highly correlated with expression of Tumor Necrosis Factor Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand (TRAIL), which is upregulated in CD8 cells in PH lungs of both mice and humans. We show that IFNα4 produced by intestinal epithelial cells facilitates IFI44 expression in CD8 cells. Finally, we demonstrate that IFN receptor 1-KO in mice do not develop PH on 15-HETE diet. In addition, silencing IFI44 expression in the lungs of mice on 15-HETE diet prevents the development of PH and is associated with significantly lower expression of IFI44 and TRAIL in CD8 cells in the lungs. Six species of Ips de Geer (Coleoptera: Curculionidae; Scolytinae) occur in Europe. They attack weakened or dead conifers but may become aggressive and mass-attack living trees. All species have expanded their ranges in Europe since the late 19th century. Here, we analyse the patterns of this spread and discuss the factors at play. Starting with an assessment of distribution changes of the insects and of their host trees since the nineteenth century, we describe how and, when known, why territorial changes occurred in Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland), Central Europe (Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Germany), the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain. Based on these country narratives, we discuss the conditions for, and causes of, territorial expansion. A necessary condition is the presence of host trees of vulnerable ages and sizes, resulting from the post-glaciation expansion of host range. Population changes and territorial expansion are influenced by environmental or anthropic drivers: climatic events (droughts and storms), silvicultural practices and trade. Three main factors favour or hamper the response of the different species to these drivers: active and passive flight capacity, dispersal upon emergence and response to pheromones after take-off, and pre-dispersal mating. These criteria enable identification of differences in the invasive capacities of the six species. In particular, Ips typographus appears to be a poor invader worldwide because of its wide dispersal upon emergence and its delayed response to pheromones. Alongside guiding the departed on a ritual journey to their place and time of origin, the Kulung Rai of Nepal have added the construction of stone memorial benches along the pathways to honour their deceased. However, both the representations and material aspects of the deceased and the pathways associated with these memorial constructions and ritual techniques differ. I delve into the past to reconstruct the reasons and conditions for the emergence of these benches, arguing that they are linked to substantial changes resulting from the gradual integration of the Kulung into the Nepalese state. This integration fostered the development of Hindu and Buddhist ideas, materialised in the form of these memorial benches. Consequently, I establish a connection between the arrival of the state, the expansion of pathway and road, and religious practices among the Kulung. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We develop and implement a non-parametric method for joint exact calibration of a local volatility model and a correlated stochastic short rate model using semimartingale optimal transport. The method relies on the duality results established in Joseph et al. (Calibration of local volatility models with stochastic interest rates using optimal transport, 2023). and jointly calibrates the whole equity-rate dynamics. It uses an iterative approach which starts with a parametric model and tries to stay close to it, until a perfect calibration is obtained. We demonstrate the performance of our approach on market data using European SPX options and European cap interest rate options. Background/Objectives: Enfortumab vedotin (EV) is an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) that combines monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE), a potent cytotoxic agent, with a monoclonal antibody targeting Nectin-4. It has emerged as a promising therapy for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC), either as monotherapy or in combination with pembrolizumab, improving significantly the overall survival of these patients. EV is associated with common adverse events, including skin reactions, glucose imbalance, and peripheral neuropathy, which are usually mild in severity and easily manageable. Methods: Following an initial case of pleuro-pneumopathy occurring in a patient treated with EV, we conducted a retrospective analysis of EV effects on pulmonary imaging. Results: In a cohort of 20 all-comers mUC patients, we identified three cases of potentially EV-related lung toxicity, resulting in a pleuro-pneumopathy rate of 15%. Two of these cases appeared highly symptomatic and required high steroid doses, with a rapid resolution of symptoms and normalization of radiological findings. In one patient, rechallenge of EV was associated with reoccurrence of pneumopathy. We described the clinical and radiological features of these cases, as well as their evolution after EV discontinuation and rechallenge. The French adaptation of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale of Children, 5th edition (WISC-V) was an opportunity to examine if some common representations of gender differences in intellectual abilities are supported by empirical evidence. The WISC-V standardization sample provided data on a wide range of cognitive tests in a large sample of 6- to 16-year-old children representative of the French population. This sample included 517 boys and 532 girls. The WISC-V data were compared to those of the French standardization samples of three previous versions of the WISC (WISC-R, WISC-III, and WISC-IV). These four standardization samples span a 35-year period. The data analysis of the WISC-V standardization sample and the three previous versions of this intelligence scale showed that the performance gaps on intellectual tests between girls and boys have gradually narrowed over time. Almost no gender differences were observed in the WISC-V standardization sample, not only in IQ but also in key facets of intelligence. Data do not support the stereotype that girls are better at verbal tasks and boys are better at visuospatial tasks. However, some statistically significant differences remain, but the magnitude was generally small with no practical implications. Summary: Autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T‐cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of lymphoid malignancies, leading to the approval of CD19‐CAR T cells for B‐cell lymphomas and acute leukaemia, and more recently, B‐cell maturation antigen‐CAR T cells for multiple myeloma. The long‐term follow‐up of patients treated in the early clinical trials demonstrates the possibility for long‐term remission, suggesting a cure. This is associated with a low incidence of significant long‐term side effects and a rapid improvement in the quality of life for responders. In contrast, other types of immunotherapies require prolonged treatments or carry the risk of long‐term side effects impairing the quality of life. Despite impressive results, some patients still experience treatment failure or ultimately relapse, underscoring the imperative to improve CAR T‐cell therapies and gain a better understanding of their determinants of efficacy to maximize positive outcomes. While the next‐generation of CAR T cells will undoubtingly be more potent, there are already opportunities for optimization when utilizing the currently available CAR T cells. This review article aims to summarize the current evidence from clinical, translational and fundamental research, providing clinicians with insights to enhance their understanding and use of CAR T cells. Purpose: To explore the future of former anatomy tutors, their perception of the impact that the anatomy near-peer teaching (NPT) program have had on them, in terms of academic performance, professional development, personal growth, long-term anatomical knowledge, and views on body donor ethics. Additionally, we compared their academic performance with non-tutor peers in terms of ranking at the National Qualifying Examination (NQE). Methods: A voluntary survey was emailed to all anatomy tutors from 2005 to 2024, using an online Google Forms questionnaire including closed and open-ended questions across four themes. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative responses underwent thematic analysis. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to compare former tutors' NQE rankings to their peers. Results: Forty-seven out of 48 tutors responded. Tutors reported a positive program impact, including improvements in technical skills (100%), teamwork (97.9%), communication (89.4%), and organizational skills (76.6%), and good long-term anatomical knowledge retention (85.7%). Dissection on body donors was deemed essential for anatomy learning while shaping professional and ethical values. Of the 36 residents/specialists, 38.9% ranked in the top 10% at the NQE, with a statistically significant higher rank than their peers (p = 0.0011), and 100% obtained their desired specialty. Conclusion: This results suggest that the anatomy NPT program significantly enhanced tutors' academic performance, technical skills, personal and professional development, and was useful to foster a positive perception of dissection on body donors and reinforced the importance of anatomical knowledge in clinical practice. The electric polarizability and the spread of the total position tensors are used to characterize the metallic vs insulator nature of large (finite) systems. Finite clusters are usually treated within the open boundary condition formalism. This introduces border effects, which prevent a fast convergence to the thermodynamic limit and can be eliminated within the formalism of periodic boundary conditions. Recently, we introduced an original approach to periodic boundary conditions, named Clifford boundary conditions. It considers a finite fragment extracted from a periodic system and the modification of its topology into that of a Clifford torus. The quantity representing the position is modified in order to fulfill the system periodicity. In this work, we apply the formalism of Clifford boundary conditions to the case of carbon nanotubes, whose treatment results in a particularly simple zigzag geometry. Indeed, we demonstrate that at the Hückel level, these nanotubes, either finite or periodic, are formally equivalent to a collection of non-interacting dimerized linear chains, thus simplifying their treatment. This equivalence is used to describe some nanotube properties as the sum of the contributions of the independent chains and to identify the origin of peculiar behaviors (such as conductivity). Indeed, if the number of hexagons along the circumference is a multiple of three, a metallic behavior is found, namely a divergence of both the (per electron) polarizability and total position spread of at least one linear chain. The question of whether cognitive control is specific to certain domains or domain-general remains an extensively debated question at both cognitive and neural levels. This study examined the neural substrates associated with resistance to interference (RI) in phonological, semantic, and visual domains by using strictly matched tasks and determining the domain-general or domain-specific manner in which aging affects the neural substrates associated with RI. In an fMRI experiment, young and older participants performed a similarity judgment task with phonological, semantic, or visual interference buildup. For both age groups, domain-specific RI effects were observed at the univariate level, with increased involvement in the phonological domain of the right angular gyrus and the right lingual gyrus, in the semantic domain of the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, the bilateral superior parietal and angular gyri and the left middle temporal gyrus, and in the visual domain of the middle/superior frontal gyri and occipital gyri. At the multivariate level, although RI effects could be decoded from neural patterns in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus for all domains and age groups, between-domain prediction of RI conditions was associated with Bayesian evidence for the null hypothesis. According to the Projective Consciousness Model (PCM), in human spatial awareness, 3-dimensional projective geometry structures information integration and action planning through perspective taking within an internal representation space. The way different perspectives are related to and transform a world model defines a specific perception and imagination scheme. In mathematics, such a collection of transformations corresponds to a ‘group’, whose ‘actions’ characterize the geometry of a space. Imbuing world models with a group structure may capture different agents’ spatial awareness and affordance schemes. We used group action as a special class of policies for perspective-dependent control. We explored how such a geometric structure impacts agents’ behaviors, comparing how the Euclidean versus projective groups act on epistemic value in active inference, drive curiosity, and exploration. We formally demonstrate and simulate how the groups induce distinct behaviors in a simple search task. The projective group’s nonlinear magnification of information transformed epistemic value according to the choice of frame, generating behaviors of approach toward objects with uncertain locations due to limited sampling. The Euclidean group had no effect on epistemic value: no action was better than the initial idle state. In structuring a priori an agent’s internal representation, we show how geometry can play a key role in information integration and action planning. Our results add further support to the PCM. Introducing magnetic coupling between lanthanide ions has been shown to yield better-performing single-molecule magnets (SMMs), as exemplified by the Cp2iPr5Ln2I3 family of compounds (CpiPr5: pentaisopropylcyclopentadienyl, Ln: Gd, Tb, or Dy). This unique coupling is mediated through an unpaired electron hosted in a σ-like orbital, that results from the two 5dz2 Ln ions, and understanding these interactions holds the key to continue advancing the rational design of SMMs. Here, we focus on the Cp2iPr5Gd2I3 spin-only system and apply a recently proposed DFT-based decomposition scheme to assess the chemical and structural factors that affect the magnetic coupling. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe disease caused by progressive distal pulmonary artery obstruction. One cause of PAH are loss‐of‐function mutations in the potassium channel subfamily K member 3 (KCNK3). KCNK3 encodes a two‐pore domain potassium channel, which is crucial for pulmonary circulation homeostasis. However, our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying KCNK3 dysfunction in PAH is still incomplete. Taking advantage of unique Kcnk3‐deficient rats, we analyzed the transcriptomic changes in the lungs from homozygous Kcnk3‐deficient rats and wild‐type (WT) littermates and compared them to PAH patient transcriptomic data. Transcriptome analysis of lung tissue obtained from WT and Kcnk3‐deficient rats identified 1915 down‐ or upregulated genes. In addition, despite limited similarities at the gene level, we found a strong common signature at the pathway level in PAH patients and Kcnk3‐deficient rat lungs, especially for immune response. Using the dysregulated genes involved in the immune response, we identified Spleen Associated Tyrosine Kinase (SYK), a significantly downregulated gene in human PAH patients and Kcnk3‐deficient rats, as a hub gene. Plant roots represent about a quarter of global plant biomass and constitute a primary source of soil organic carbon (C). Yet, considerable uncertainty persists regarding root litter decomposition and their responses to global change factors (GCFs). Much of this uncertainty stems from a limited understanding of the multifactorial effects of GCFs and it remains unclear how these effects are mediated by litter quality, soil conditions and microbial functionality. Using complementary field decomposition and laboratory incubation approaches, we assessed the relative controls of GCF‐mediated changes in root litter traits and soil and microbial properties on fine‐root decomposition under warming, nitrogen (N) enrichment, and precipitation alteration. We found that warming and N enrichment accelerated fine‐root decomposition by over 10%, and their combination showed an additive effect, while precipitation reduction suppressed decomposition overall by 12%, with the suppressive effect being most significant under warming‐alone and N enrichment‐alone conditions. Significantly, changes in litter quality played a dominant role and accelerated fine‐root decomposition by 15% ~ 18% under warming and N enrichment, while changes in soil and microbial properties were predominant and reduced decomposition by 7% ~ 10% under precipitation reduction and the combined warming and N enrichment. Examining only the decomposition environment or litter properties in isolation can distort global change effects on root decomposition, underestimating precipitation reduction impacts by 38% and overstating warming and N effects by up to 73%. These findings highlight that the net impact of GCFs on root litter decomposition hinges on the interplay between GCF‐modulated root decomposability and decomposition environment, as well as on the synergistic or antagonistic relationships among GCFs themselves. Our study emphasizes that integrating the legacy effects of multiple GCFs on root traits, soil conditions and microbial functionality would improve our prediction of C and nutrient cycling under interactive global change scenarios. Background: Oncocytic thyroid carcinoma (OTC) was previously considered a variant of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) but has recently been reclassified as a separate form of thyroid cancer. This study aimed to demonstrate that FTC and OTC are fundamentally distinct entities that can potentially be differentiated preoperatively through cytology and/or molecular testing. Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with FTC and OTC operated upon at two university health centers from January 2016 to September 2023 (n = 3219) was conducted. Molecular testing results were correlated with histopathologic diagnosis. Results: Fifty patients met the inclusion criteria. FTC was identified in 27 (54.0%) patients, and OTC in 23 (46.0%) patients. Patients with OTC were older (61.8 years) than FTC patients (51.2 years) (p = 0.013). Moreover, aggressive tumors were found in 39.1% (9/23) of OTCs compared to 11.1% (3/27) of FTCs (p = 0.021). Amongst Bethesda category III and IV nodules, 17 out of 20 (85.0%) OTC cytology reports demonstrated an oncocytic subtype compared to only 5 out of 24 FTC cytology reports (20.8%) (p = 0.002). On molecular testing, the EIF1AX alteration was exclusively present in OTCs while the PAX8/PPARy and PTEN alterations were exclusively found in FTCs. Copy number alterations (CNAs) were found to be more prevalent in OTC (66.7%) compared to FTC (33.3%), and they were not indicative of tumor aggressiveness. Within the OTC group, all three patients who had a TP53 alteration were diagnosed with aggressive cancer. Lastly, the OTCs exhibited a higher frequency of multiple alterations on molecular testing (66.7%) compared to FTCs (33.3%). Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the largest study to date comparing the clinical application of abnormalities found on molecular testing for FTC and OTC. Background: The clustered regulatory interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-Cas13a system has strong potential for highly sensitive detection of exogenous sequences. The detection of KRASG12 point mutations with low allele frequencies may prove powerful for the formal diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Results: We implemented preamplification of KRAS alleles (wild-type and mutant) to reveal the presence of mutant KRAS with CRISPR-Cas13a. The discrimination of KRASG12D from KRASWT was poor for the generic KRAS preamplification templates and depended on the crRNA design, the secondary structure of the target templates, and the nature of the mismatches between the guide and the templates. To improve the specificity, we used an allele-specific PCR preamplification method called CASPER (Cas13a Allele-Specific PCR Enzyme Recognition). CASPER enabled specific and sensitive detection of KRASG12D with low DNA input. CASPER detected KRAS mutations in DNA extracted from patients' pancreatic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration fluid. What type of site-specific outdoor art structure is more likely to induce and catalyze artistic territorial services and for whom are these services intended for? Answering this question will help the understanding of territorial impacts of such art projects in European peripheric areas. This article is based on the analysis of a European database on 128 site-specific outdoor visual art structures informed by 36 distinct criteria like accessibility, location, institutional statuses and funding, initiator and audiences, site-specificness criteria, etc. A typology, produced by the statistical analysis of this database, shows that three main intelligible categories dominate site-specific art initiatives: 'art-washing sculpture parks', 'territorial art of peripheries' and 'eco-artistic front of art projects'. They all have different kinds of specific interactions, sometimes critical, with the local territory. They act differently as artistic territorial services (ATS) providers. ATS in Spain (Cesar Manrique artworks in Lanzarote Island) show how art is transformed into mass-tourism attraction; in France the Forêt d' Art Contemporain in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and in Greece, the Vovousa Festival in Epirus, show how art can reinforce territorial identity and environmental commitment, but with very mixed benefits to the local economy. Despite recent calls for more peer support initiatives aimed at promoting mental health in postsecondary institutions, those initiatives remain scarce. In this study, a multisite randomized controlled trial was designed to assess the effect of an online peer support intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy using mental health and school indicators. Undergraduate students were recruited in three Canadian universities and randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 54) or a wait-list control group (n = 53). Compared to control participants, those who took part in the program self-reported reduced psychological inflexibility, stress, anxiety and depression, and increased psychological flexibility and well-being. The intervention had no effect on academic satisfaction and engagement. These results were found both in completer and intent-to-treat samples. The findings provide evidence that peer support may be a beneficial adjunct to mental health interventions offered to college and university students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mutual coupling of (thermofluiddynamic) modes of perturbations can affect the thermo-acoustic stability of combustors and contribute to combustion noise. For example, vortical or entropic perturbations can be transferred to acoustic perturbations if accelerated by the mean flow. The decomposition of perturbation fields into the respective modes and a linear description of their interactions in terms of fluctuating primitive variables is challenging. In contrast, Doak's momentum potential theory promises an unambiguous decomposition in terms of momentum fluctuations, which is not limited to the linear regime. Whereas classical momentum potential theory takes into account hydrodynamic, acoustic and entropic modes in unconfined flows, the investigation of noise generation in combustion chambers requires the extension of the momentum potential theory to capture modes linked to the fluctuation of species mass fractions ("species mode") arising from the change in chemical composition due to the reaction. Furthermore, a rigorous treatment of boundary conditions due to the confinement of the flow inside the combustor is required. The herein presented extension to reactive flows consists of two steps, (i) the formulation of a potential for momentum fluctuations related to species modes and (ii) identification of the total fluctuating enthalpy related to species modes. The extended theory is applied to post-process computational fluid dynamic simulation data of the propagation of entropy and species perturbations through one-dimensional ducts, nozzles and premixed flames. We find that although momentum potential theory offers a complete decomposition of momentum perturbations for reactive flows, the meaningful interpretation of this decomposition is rather challenging, even for non-reactive flows. The dynamics of an axisymmetrical swirling jet is studied via global linear stability and resolvent analyses. The modeled flow represents a combustor-like swirling jet, that is turbulent, compressible, non-parallel, and enclosed. In particular, the computational domain embeds a realistic axisymmetrical swirler model to resolve the mode conversion process. Swirl fluctuations are non-negligible on this configuration representative of a swirl burner, and match the analytical mode shapes of inertial waves of an inviscid uniform flow as obtained from global stability analysis. The stability map presents two eigenvalues driving a modal amplification. These eigenmodes couple a standing acoustic wave sustained in the mixing duct and the combustion chamber with the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism at the mixing duct exit and the acoustic-vorticity mode conversion process at the swirler, and act as a frequency selection criterion. Finally, the most amplified forcing from the resolvent analysis is similar to an unsteady heat source in the combustion chamber, and the identified optimal amplification mechanism is likely to be triggered in reacting flow with unsteady heat release rate. In a warming world, the input of glacier meltwater to inland water ecosystems is predicted to change, potentially affecting their productivity. Meta-ecosystem theory, which posits that the nutrient availability in the recipient ecosystem can determine the extent of cross-ecosystem boundary utilization, can be useful for studying landscape-scale influences of glacier meltwater on inland waters. Here, we investigate how the input of glacier meltwater in a river system in Southern Greenland influences the utilization of marine subsidies in freshwater fish. Our study system comprised four sites, with controls for glacial meltwater and marine subsidies, harboring a partially migrating population of arctic char, meaning that some individuals migrate to the ocean and others remain in freshwaters, and two fully resident populations as a freshwater reference. We assessed the incorporation of marine carbon in freshwater resident char using both bulk and amino acid stable isotope analysis of muscle tissue. In the population with partial migration, marine subsidies were a significant resource for resident char individuals, and estimates of trophic position suggest that egg cannibalism is an important mechanism underlying the assimilation of these marine subsidies. In proglacial streams, namely those with high glacial meltwater, the total dependence on marine subsidies increased and reached 83% because char become cannibals at smaller sizes. In the configuration of our focal meta-ecosystem, our results suggest that the importance of marine subsidies to freshwater fish strengthens within increasing meltwater flux from upstream glaciers. Low-income individuals who do not file Canadian personal income tax returns miss out on several important benefits delivered through the tax system and may have challenges in verifying eligibility for other income-tested public goods and services. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) could complete simple returns for many low-income families, subject to filer correction. Using the Longitudinal Administrative Databank, we estimate that this approach could be successful for more than half of families in the lowest four ventiles of the population and between 60 and 88 percent of families who rely on provincial income assistance programs. We also estimate that as many as 4.6 million returns for those with income less than $25,000 and that are classified by the CRA as simple have likely involved a commercial tax preparer or software, emphasizing the potential advantage of the CRA providing completed returns in such cases. Cell-to-cell heterogeneity in products secretion is a bottleneck for diverse applications in bioengineering, including controlled drug release, biomaterial assembly, and production of recombinant proteins in bioprocesses. Experimental approaches aiming at characterizing cell-to-cell differences in gene expression and protein accumulation can be partially adapted to address heterogeneity in protein secretion. Significant technological bottlenecks need to be addressed to establish an efficient single cell analysis pipeline. Techniques designed for directing cell collective behavior (e.g., microfluidics or flow cytometry with feedback control) could be adapted for directing product secretion by cells. Cell-to-cell heterogeneity presents challenges across various fields, from biomedicine to bioproduction, where precise cellular responses are vital. While single cell technologies have significantly enhanced our understanding of population heterogeneity, the predominant focus has been on monitoring intracellular compounds. Recognizing the added complexity introduced by the secretion system, in this review, we first provide a systematic overview of the distinct steps necessary for driving protein secretion. We discuss the various sources of noise acting from the synthesized preprotein to the secretory protein released based on a Gram-positive cellular system as a model. We next explore the applicability of single cell technologies for monitoring protein secretion throughout these functional stages. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the validity of laboratory culture, Petrifilm and Tri-Plate on-farm culture systems, as well as luminometry to correctly identify IMI at dry-off in dairy cows, considering all tests to be imperfect. From September 2020 until December 2021, we collected composite milk samples from cows before dry-off and divided them into 4 aliquots for luminometry, Petrifilm (aerobic count), Tri-Plate, and laboratory culture tests. We assessed multiple thresholds of relative light units (RLU) for luminometry, and we used thresholds of ≥100 cfu/mL for the laboratory culture, ≥50 cfu/mL for Petrifilm, and ≥1 cfu for Tri-Plate tests. We fitted Bayesian latent class analysis models to estimate the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) for each test to identify IMI, with 95% credibility interval (BCI). Using different prevalence measures (0.30, 0.50, and 0.70), we calculated the predictive values (PV) and misclassification cost terms (MCT) at different false negative-to-false-positive ratios (FN:FP). A total of 333 cows were enrolled in the study from one commercial Holstein herd. The validity of the luminometry was poor for all thresholds, with an Se of 0.51 (95% BCI = 0.43–0.59) and Sp of 0.38 (95% BCI = 0.26–0.50) when using a threshold of ≥150 RLU. The laboratory culture had an Se of 0.93 (95% BCI = 0.85–0.98) and Sp of 0.69 (95% BCI = 0.49–0.89); the Petrifilm had an Se of 0.91 (95% BCI = 0.80–0.98) and Sp of 0.71 (95% BCI = 0.51–0.90); and the Tri-Plate had an Se of 0.65 (95% BCI = 0.53–0.82) and Sp of 0.85 (95% BCI = 0.66–0.97). Bacteriological tests had good PV, with comparable positive PV for all 3 tests, but lower negative PV for the Tri-Plate compared with the laboratory culture and the Petrifilm. For a prevalence of IMI of 0.30, all 3 tests had similar MCT, but for prevalence of 0.50 and 0.70, the Tri-Plate had higher MCT in scenarios where leaving a cow with IMI untreated is considered to have greater detrimental effects than treating a healthy cow (i.e., FN:FP of 3:1). Our results showed that the bacteriological tests have adequate validity to diagnose IMI at dry-off, but luminometry does not. We concluded that although luminometry is not useful to identify IMI at dry-off, the Petrifilm and Tri-Plate tests performed similarly to laboratory culture, depending on the prevalence and importance of the FP and FN results. In a four-dimensional quantum field theory that flows between two fixed points under the renormalization group, the change in the conformal anomaly ∆a has been related to the average null energy. We extend this result to derive a sum rule for the other anomaly coefficient, ∆c, in terms of the stress tensor three-point function. While the sum rule for ∆a is an expectation value of the averaged null energy operator, and therefore positive, the result for ∆c involves the off-diagonal matrix elements, so it does not have a fixed sign. The genus Encephalartos is entirely endemic to Africa, and like most cycad species, the genus is at risk of extinction. One of the threats jeopardising the future of the genus is reproduction failure, a failure that is still poorly understood. Our objective was to investigate what predisposes Encephalartos species to seed damages through predation, a potential cause of reproduction failure. We collected functional traits of 430 individuals of Encephalartos villosus, as well as data on pre‐dispersal seed predation, habitat type and elevation in the Origi Gorge Nature Reserve, South Africa. Then, we analysed our data by fitting a structural equation model. We found that plants tend to be taller when moving from open to close habitat, whereas plant height tends to increase along elevation. In addition, taller plants tend to have more leaves, and plant canopy size shows significant positive relationship with elevation, plant height and number of leaves. These findings suggest a leaf height–canopy dimension strategy perhaps in response to environmental stresses imposed by elevation. We tested the effects of habitat types on seed production. Although there were significantly more seeds in open habitats, open habitats showed the lowest proportion of predated seeds. Finally, we tested the effects of elevation on seed production. We found that seed production decreases along elevation while the proportion of predated seeds increases. Under the resource concentration hypothesis, these findings (where there are more resources, predation is low) are unexpected, suggesting rather that it is the resource dilution effect that matches the pre‐dispersal seed predation patterns in our study area. We suggest that anthropogenic pressures at lower elevation due to easy access may cause seed predators to shift towards higher elevation where they cause heavier damage to seed, thus perhaps contributing to the extinction risk of the genus Encephalartos. Background: Delayed cerebral ischemia associated with cerebral vasospasm (CVS) in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage significantly affects patient prognosis. Levosimendan has emerged as a potential treatment, but clinical data are lacking. The aim of this study is to decipher levosimendan's effect on cerebral hemodynamics by automated quantitative measurements of brain computed tomography perfusion (CTP). Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a database of a neurosurgical intensive care unit. All patients admitted from January 2018 to July 2022 for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and treated with levosimendan for CVS who did not respond to other therapies were included. Quantitative measurements of time to maximum (Tmax), relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), and relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were automatically compared with coregistered CTP before and after levosimendan administration in oligemic regions. Results: Of 21 patients included, CTP analysis could be performed in 16. Levosimendan improved Tmax from 14.4 s (interquartile range [IQR] 9.1–21) before treatment to 7.1 s (IQR 5.5–8.1) after treatment (p < 0.001). rCBV (94% [IQR 79–103] before treatment and 89% [IQR 72–103] after treatment, p = 0.63) and rCBF (85% [IQR 77–90] before treatment and 87% [IQR 73–98] after treatment, p = 0.98) remained stable. The subgroup of six patients who did not develop cerebral infarction attributed to delayed cerebral ischemia showed an approximately 10% increase (rCBV 85% [IQR 79–99] before treatment vs. 95% [IQR 88–112] after treatment, p = 0.21; rCBF 81% [IQR 76–87] before treatment vs. 89% [IQR 84–99] after treatment, p = 0.4). Conclusions: In refractory CVS, levosimendan use was associated with a significant reduction in Tmax in oligemic regions. However, this value remained at an abnormal level, indicating the presence of a persistent CVS. Further analysis raised the hypothesis that levosimendan causes cerebral vasodilation, but other studies are needed because our design does not allow us to quantify the effect of levosimendan from that of the natural evolution of CVS. A series of poly(alkyl methacrylate)s and poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)s labeled with 1-pyrenebutanol were referred to as the PyC4-PCnMA samples with n = 1, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 18 and the PyC4-PEGnMA samples with n = 0–5, 9, 16, and 19, respectively. Pyrene excimer formation (PEF) upon the encounter between an excited and a ground-state pyrenyl labels was employed to determine their persistence length (lp) in o-xylene. The fluorescence decays of the PyC4-PCnMA and PyC4-PEGnMA samples were acquired and analyzed with the fluorescence blob model to yield the number (Nblob) of structural units in the volume probed by an excited pyrenyl label. Nblob was found to decrease with an increasing number (NS) of non-hydrogen atoms in the side chain, reaching a plateau for the PyC4-PEGnMA samples with a longer side chain (n = 16 and 19). The Nblob values were used to determine lp. The lp values for the PyC4-PCnMA and PyC4-PEGnMA samples increased linearly with increasing NS2 as predicted theoretically, which agreed with the lp values obtained by viscometry for a series of PCnMA samples. The good agreement between the lp values retrieved by PEF and viscometry served to validate the PEF-based methodology for determining lp for linear polymers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to assess the diagnostic accuracy of non-contrast-enhanced 4D MR angiography (NCE-4D-MRA) compared to contrast-enhanced 4D MR angiography (CE-4D-MRA) for the detection and angioarchitectural characterisation of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs). Utilising a retrospective design, we examined 54 MRA pairs from 43 patients with bAVMs, using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the reference standard. Both NCE-4D-MRA and CE-4D-MRA were performed using a 3-T MR imaging system. The primary objectives were to evaluate the diagnostic performance of NCE-4D-MRA against CE-4D-MRA and DSA and to assess concordance between imaging modalities in grading bAVMs according to four main scales: Spetzler–Martin, Buffalo, AVM embocure score (AVMES), and R2eDAVM. Our results demonstrated that NCE-4D-MRA had a higher accuracy and specificity compared to CE-4D-MRA (0.85 vs. 0.83 and 95% vs. 85%, respectively) and similar agreement, with DSA detecting shunts in bAVMs or residuals. Concordance in grading bAVMs was substantial between NCE-4D-MRA and DSA, particularly for the Spetzler–Martin and Buffalo scales, with CE-4D-MRA showing slightly higher kappa values for interobserver agreement. The study highlights the potential of NCE-4D-MRA as a diagnostic tool for bAVMs, offering comparable accuracy to CE-4D-MRA while avoiding the risks associated with gadolinium-based contrast agents. The safety profile of imaging techniques is a significant concern in the long-term follow up of bAVMs, and further prospective research should focus on NCE-4D-MRA protocol improvement for clinical use. Attentional bias to threat has been almost exclusively examined after participants experienced repeated pairings between a conditioned stimulus (CS) and an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US). This study aimed to determine whether threat-related attentional capture can result from observational learning, when participants acquire knowledge of the aversive qualities of a stimulus without themselves experiencing aversive outcomes. Non-clinical young-adult participants (N = 38) first watched a video of an individual (the demonstrator) performing a Pavlovian conditioning task in which one colour was paired with shock (CS+) and another colour was neutral (CS−). They then carried out visual search for a shape-defined target. Oculomotor measures evidenced an attentional bias toward the CS+ colour, suggesting that threat-related attentional capture can ensue from observational learning. Exploratory analyses also revealed that this effect was positively correlated with empathy for the demonstrator. Our findings extend empirical and theoretical knowledge about threat-driven attention and provide valuable insights to better understand the formation of anxiety disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preclinical studies suggest that early exposure to anaesthesia alters the visual system in mice and non-human primates. We investigated whether exposure to general anaesthesia leads to visual attention processing changes in children, which could potentially impact essential life skills, including learning. This was a post hoc analysis of data from the APprentissages EXécutifs et cerveau chez les enfants d'âge scolaire (APEX) cohort study. A total of 24 healthy 9–10-yr-old children who were or were not exposed to general anaesthesia (for surgery) by a mean age of 3.8 (2.6) yr performed a visual attention task to evaluate ability to process either local details or general global visual information. Whether children were distracted by visual interference during global and local information processing was also assessed. Participants included in the analyses (n =12 participants exposed to general anaesthesia and n =12 controls) successfully completed (>90% of correct answers) the trial tasks. Children from both groups were equally distracted by visual interference. However, children who had been exposed to general anaesthesia were more attracted to global visual information than were control children (P =0.03). These findings suggest lasting effects of early-life exposure to general anaesthesia on visuospatial abilities. Further investigations of the mechanisms by which general anaesthesia could have delayed effects on how children perceive their visual environment are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the effects of maintaining beta-blockers on the day of surgery on the incidence of atrial fibrillation and postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We conducted a multicentre prospective observational study with propensity matching on patients treated with beta-blockers. We collected their baseline patient characteristics, comorbidities, and operative and postoperative outcomes. The endpoints were postoperative atrial fibrillation and AKI after cardiac surgery. Of the 1789 included patients, propensity matching led to 583 patients in each group. Maintenance of beta-blockers was not associated with a reduced risk of atrial fibrillation (odds ratio: 0.86 [95% confidence interval 0.66–1.14], P =0.335; 141 patients [24.2%] vs 126 patients [21.6%]). Sensitivity analysis did not demonstrate association between beta-blocker maintenance and atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery (odds ratio: 0.93 [95% confidence interval: 0.72–1.22], P =0.625). Maintenance of beta-blockers was associated with a higher rate of norepinephrine use (415 [71.2%] vs 465 [79.8%], P =0.0001) and postoperative AKI (124 [21.3%] vs 159 [27.3%], P =0.0127). No statistically significant difference was observed in ICU length of stay. Maintenance of beta-blockers on the day of surgery was not associated with a reduced incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation. There is no universally accepted definition for surgical prehabilitation. The objectives of this scoping review were to (1) identify how surgical prehabilitation is defined across randomised controlled trials and (2) propose a common definition. The final search was conducted in February 2023 using MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane. We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of unimodal or multimodal prehabilitation interventions (nutrition, exercise, and psychological support) lasting at least 7 days in adults undergoing elective surgery. Qualitative data were analysed using summative content analysis. We identified 76 prehabilitation trials of patients undergoing abdominal (n=26, 34%), orthopaedic (n=20, 26%), thoracic (n=14, 18%), cardiac (n=7, 9%), spinal (n=4, 5%), and other (n=5, 7%) surgeries. Surgical prehabilitation was explicitly defined in more than half of these RCTs (n=42, 55%). Our findings consolidated the following definition: 'Prehabilitation is a process from diagnosis to surgery, consisting of one or more preoperative interventions of exercise, nutrition, psychological strategies and respiratory training, that aims to enhance functional capacity and physiological reserve to allow patients to withstand surgical stressors, improve postoperative outcomes, and facilitate recovery.' A common definition is the first step towards standardisation, which is needed to guide future high-quality research and advance the field of prehabilitation. The meeting gathered world‐renowned experts in cancer biology and immunology. It showcased the most advanced science on mechanisms driving cellular heterogeneity, plasticity, and signaling in normal and cancer cellular ecosystems, which contribute to cancer development, progression, and therapeutic resistance. Introduction: Awake surgery is now a common approach for the resection of glioma. One of the surgical complications is mini-stroke which take the form of periresectional small areas of brain ischemic lesions. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the association between factors related to anesthetic management and the risk of mini-stroke, in awake surgery for glioma resection. Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, all patients who were operated on, between 2011 and 2022, in awake conditions for a glioma resection, were retrospectively included. The studied anesthetic parameters included hemodynamic variables, fluid intake and urinary output. The primary endpoint was the presence of mini-stroke on a magnetic resonance imaging performed within the first 48 h postoperatively. Results: A total of 176 surgeries were included. Mini-stroke was present in 120/171 surgeries (70%), with a median volume of 1.2 interquartile range [0.4–2.2] cubic centimeters (cc). In a multivariable analysis, only the per operative urinary output was significantly associated with the incidence of postoperative mini-strokes (adjusted odd-ratio 0.65, 95% confidence interval 0.45–0.94, p = 0.02). No variables related to the anesthetic management were associated with the volume of postoperative mini-strokes. In particular, the time spent below 90% of the baseline systolic blood pressure was not associated with either the risk or the volume of mini-strokes. Conclusion: During awake surgery for glioma resection, among several anesthesia related factors, only the per operative urinary output was associated with the incidence of postoperative mini-stroke. Transpiration efficiency (TE), the biomass produced per unit of water transpired, is a key trait for crop performance under limited water. As water becomes scarce, increasing TE would contribute to increase crop drought tolerance. This study is a first step to explore pearl millet genotypic variability for TE on a large and representative diversity panel. We analyzed TE on 537 pearl millet genotypes, including inbred lines, test-cross hybrids, and hybrids bred for different agroecological zones. Three lysimeter trials were conducted in 2012, 2013 and 2015, to assess TE both under well-watered and terminal-water stress conditions. We recorded grain yield to assess its relationship with TE. Up to two-fold variation for TE was observed over the accessions used. Mean TE varied between inbred and testcross hybrids, across years and was slightly higher under water stress. TE also differed among hybrids developed for three agroecological zones, being higher in hybrids bred for the wetter zone, underlining the importance of selecting germplasm according to the target area. Environmental conditions triggered large Genotype x Environment (GxE) interactions, although TE showed some high heritability. Transpiration efficiency was the second contributor to grain yield after harvest index, highlighting the importance of integrating it into pearl millet breeding programs. Future research on TE in pearl millet should focus (i) on investigating the causes of its plasticity i.e. the GxE interaction (ii) on studying its genetic basis and its association with other important physiological traits. This article spotlights the interest in using co-localized infrared (IR)–Raman spectroscopy as an innovative approach for the in situ monitoring of complex gas mixtures, e.g., hydrogen (H2), nitrogen (N2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4), at elevated pressures. Thus, by combining the IR and Raman spectra of CH4, we proposed a new methodology for the calibration of the Raman spectra to circumvent the fact that Raman intensities are arbitrary (laser power, instrument response, integration time, and fluorescence). Applying our methodology to scale several consecutive experiments, the concentrations of all gases were determined with a relative uncertainty lower than 10%. These original results highlight the interest in co-localized IR–Raman spectroscopy analysis in a single cell for the quantitative analysis of solutes by Raman spectroscopy without the use of an internal standard.
