Purpose: The measurement of regional competitiveness is becoming essential for policymakers to address territorial disparities, while considering the issue of correlations among indicators. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to measure regional competitiveness using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) by considering different distance measures and two levels of analysis to provide a comparative and comprehensive measurement of regional competitiveness in Europe. Design/methodology/approach: The authors apply TOPSIS based on three different distance measures (the Manhattan, the Euclidean and the Mahalanobis distance measures) to the regions of the EU Regional Competitiveness Index (RCI) 2019, which is taken as the frame of reference. Findings: The authors replicate the RCI by using TOPSIS with a less preferred choice of distance measure, indicating TOPSIS as a valuable method for policymakers in the analysis of regional competitiveness. The authors argue in favour of the Mahalanobis distance measure as the best of the three, as it considers correlations among macro-economic indicators. Originality/value: This study aims to make three contributions. Firstly, by replicating the RCI by means of TOPSIS with a less preferred choice of distance measure, the paper provides a benchmark for future research on regional competitiveness. Secondly, by suggesting the use of TOPSIS with the use of the Mahalanobis distance measure, the authors show how to measure regional competitiveness by taking into account correlations among pillars. The elastic behavior of nematics is commonly described in terms of the three so-called bulk deformation modes, i.e., splay, twist, and bend. However, the elastic free energy contains also other terms, often denoted as saddle–splay and splay–bend, which contribute, for instance, in confined systems. The role of such terms is controversial, partly because of the difficulty of their experimental determination. The saddle–splay (K24) and splay–bend (K13) elastic constants remain elusive also for theories; indeed, even the possibility of obtaining unambiguous microscopic expressions for these quantities has been questioned. Here, within the framework of Onsager theory with Parsons–Lee correction, we obtain microscopic estimates of the deformation free energy density of hard rod nematics in the presence of different director deformations. In the limit of a slowly changing director, these are directly compared with the macroscopic elastic free energy density. Within the same framework, we derive also closed microscopic expressions for all elastic coefficients of rodlike nematics. We find that the saddle–splay constant K24 is larger than both K11 and K22 over a wide range of particle lengths and densities. Moreover, the K13 contribution comes out to be crucial for the consistency of the results obtained from the analysis of the microscopic deformation free energy density calculated for variants of the splay deformation. Executive remuneration has traditionally attracted the attention of scholars, regulators, and public opinion. In recent years, especially after epochal corporate scandals and financial crises, executive remuneration has polarized the political debate, leading to consequences for the way it was theorized, structured, and ultimately quantified within corporations. This article specifically examines the relationship between executive compensation and sustainability, with a focus on the influence of Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) metrics in the context of European companies. The article provides a qualitative analysis of the historical debate on executive remuneration and considers the different theories informing corporate law. Furthermore, it offers a qualitative and empirical analysis of how executive compensation policies of the 300 largest companies by target capitalization in Europe – listed in the FTSE EuroFirst300 – take ESG parameters into account. Lastly, this article presents some policy considerations, particularly questioning whether executive remuneration is the right incentive for ESG compliance, and emphasizing the importance of a shift in corporate culture to effectively make corporate practices more sustainable. The present study examined how the personality dimensions of the Dark Triad (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) predict infidelity intentions and jealousy and whether these variables predict conflict tactics used in relationships. Adult women (N = 567, 18–73 years old, Mage = 31.91; SD = 10.29) completed self-report scales assessing the Dark Triad traits, jealousy (i.e., cognitive, emotional, and behavioral), intentions towards infidelity, and conflict tactics, including negotiation, psychological aggression, physical assault, sexual coercion, and injury. Our results demonstrated that the Dark Triad traits had strong links to the intention to commit infidelity and jealousy, and at the correlational level, there were small correlations between jealousy and the intention to commit infidelity. Both jealousy and the intention to commit infidelity predicted conflict tactics. As this is possibly one of the first studies to examine these variables jointly, the present results add to our understanding of the role of personality in romantic relationships. Morphological variation along the spatial distribution of species has been extensively investigated in ecological studies, and several ecogeographical rules explore the relationships between morphological traits and the environment. Many morphological traits are correlated, providing an opportunity to evaluate the validity of multiple ecogeographical rules simultaneously. Bergmann's rule predicts that endothermic animals in colder locations are larger than those in warmer locations. Jordan's rule predicts that fish from colder locations have more vertebrae than those from warmer locations. We tested the validity of Bergmann's and Jordan's rules for the neotropical lancehead snake Bothrops jararaca. We evaluated three morphological characters of 342 specimens: number of ventral scales (proxy for vertebrae number), snout–vent length (a linear measure of body size) and stoutness (volumetric body size). We implemented spatial regressions to evaluate the variation of morphological dimensions using climatic predictors: the minimum temperature and evapotranspiration. SVL was poorly related to minimum temperature and evapotranspiration. However, stouter individuals were found in colder places with greater evapotranspiration, following Bergmann's rule and the water conservation hypothesis. Individuals in warmer locations also had a greater number of ventral scales, reversing Jordan's rule. We showed that different selective pressures act on different morphological dimensions. Although stoutness follows Bergmann's rule, its variation would arise from an energy storage demand rather than heat conservation. Also, stoutness variation along evapotranspiration gradients could represent a mechanism to avoid hydric stress in environments with considerable climatic variations. The variation in vertebrae number along temperature gradients could be related to ecological factors and foraging. We highlight that physioecological mechanisms to deal with climatic variation and ecological aspects could be identified in snakes through intraspecific analyses, contrasting with interspecific studies that can hardly detect general trends. In this paper, we investigate whether reform of EU company law is needed to make corporate governance more sustainable. We also consider some issues to which the EU proposals on company law and sustainability paid scant attention, such as the role of corporate governance codes and other types of soft law, mainly of international origin, in promoting sustainable governance. In addition, we underline that in recent years the EU has adopted several measures which offer better prospects for sustainable governance than the reform of directors' duties the EU is currently debating. We conclude that the failure to take corporate governance codes and the existing regulatory framework into account could seriously impair pending reforms of directors' duties and their link to sustainability. Ordinary nematic liquid crystals have a uniform director field as ground state. However, there are relevant examples of spontaneously twisted nematic states, not only in chiral, but also in achiral materials. Different twist configurations can be found, with the director modulation along the twist axis, as in the cholesteric and in the twist-bend nematic phase, or perpendicular to it, as in blue phases and in skyrmion structures. Here, we develop a generalised Maier–Saupe theory to calculate the thermodynamic and elastic properties, included saddle-splay, of nematics made of particles whose shape can be described as a distorted rod. This turns out to be a powerful approach for screening the relation between the molecular shape and the formation of modulated nematic phases. Application to the paradigmatic models of banana-shaped and helical particles allows us to identify the role of distinct shape features, such as curvature and chirality, and the distinct mechanisms by which these promote twisted configurations. Simple Summary: The Sicilian wetlands (Italy) witness the migration of millions of birds every year. The anthropic exploitation of these wetlands, along with the exacerbation of climate variables, could soon prevent the occurrence of many waterbird species, especially in summer, and is already impacting their abundance. Our study delivers scientifically supported planning strategies to assist with preserving and restoring the avian diversity of the Sicilian wetlands and provide wetland managers with an effective methodological framework to step down their regional-scale approach to allow for the place-based planning of existing and project wetlands. In this study, we (a) formulated a general hypothesis about how wetland (functional and structural) traits influence avian diversity, (b) turned this hypothesis into a non-parametric Bayesian network, (c) disentangled the direct and indirect effects of the variables influencing waterbird species, and (d) simulated the changes expected to the levels of avian diversity as a result of numerous counterfactual and management scenarios. We applied our framework to the Sicilian wetlands as a whole; then, we downscaled simulations locally to a wetland of particular interest (Pantano Bruno). We found that (1) waterbird species are highly sensitive to wetland traits; (2) wetland traits have both direct and indirect effects upon alpha avian diversity; (3) the direct and indirect effects of wetland traits can be contrasting; (4) water level fluctuations (benefit), diversions (cost), and salinity (cost) are key factors for waterbird conservation; (5) these wetlands have the potential for hosting a level of alpha avian diversity that is double the baseline (from 19 to 38 species); (6) these wetlands are prone to ecological collapse if all traits deteriorate (from 19 to 6 species per wetland); and (7) the ecological information gained at the regional scale can be properly downscaled to the local scale to make inferences on single wetlands. Simple Summary: Marginal land is characterized by low crop productivity and is sometimes additionally contaminated. Such marginal land however presents a large opportunity to produce non-food biomass from perennial grasses with low risks of Indirect Land Use Change (low ILUC). Miscanthus spp. and Arundo donax also known as giant reed are leading bioenergy crops due to their high biomass productivity, but yields can be limited by insufficient water supply or phytotoxic levels of heavy metals. Drought and heavy metals are the most serious abiotic stress and negatively affect crop growth and development. The current study was conducted to identify the most drought and heavy metal (Zn) tolerant hybrid among seven novel Miscanthus hybrids and seven Arundo clones. Based on the morpho-physiological and biochemical analysis, the M. sinensis × M. sacchariflorus hybrid GRC 10 and Arundo clone PC1 were the most drought and Zn stress tolerant. The findings of this study provide a foundation for further investigations of the molecular and physiological mechanisms and recommendations for the cultivation of GRC 10 hybrid line and Arundo PC1 in marginal land. High-yield potential perennial crops, such as Miscanthus spp. and Arundo donax are amongst the most promising sources of sustainable biomass for bioproducts and bioenergy. Although several studies assessed the agronomic performance of these species on diverse marginal lands, research to date on drought and zinc (Zn) resistance is scarce. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the drought and Zn stress tolerance of seven novel Miscanthus hybrids and seven Arundo clones originating from different parts of Italy. We subjected both species to severe drought (less than 30%), and Zn stress (400 mg/kg−1 of ZnSO4) separately, after one month of growth. All plants were harvested after 28 days of stress, and the relative drought and Zn stress tolerance were determined by using a set of morpho-physio-biochemical and biomass attributes in relation to stress tolerance indices (STI). Principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and stress tolerance indices (STI) were performed for each morpho-physio-biochemical and biomass parameters and showed significant relative differences among the seven genotypes of both crops. Heatmaps of these indices showed how the different genotypes clustered into four groups. Considering PCA ranking value, Miscanthus hybrid GRC10 (8.11) and Arundo clone PC1 (11.34) had the highest-ranking value under both stresses indicating these hybrids and clones are the most tolerant to drought and Zn stress. In contrast, hybrid GRC3 (−3.33 lowest ranking value) and clone CT2 (−5.84) were found to be the most sensitive to both drought and Zn stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Natural wetlands supply food and shelter for many bird species and offer stopover sites that allow waterbirds to make long migratory journeys. Human impacts and ongoing climate change are however reducing the ability of wetlands to provide such essential services to avian diversity. Therefore, scientists are now forced to consider new approaches to the proactive management of remaining marginal wetlands so as to preserve the associated biodiversity as well. Because regional planning and wetland management are often debatable issues, we argue here that in silico simulation modeling, combined with field surveys and data collection, provides an appropriate methodology to address this matter effectively. Modeling and dynamically simulating the changes expected to the levels of avian diversity as a function of plausible counterfactual and management scenarios provides an informed and scientifically defensible basis for proactive conservation strategies. Such simulations present an opportunity to test numerous different scenarios, exploring their implications for the conservation of avian diversity, thus providing a well-grounded and realistic approach to dealing with inherent uncertainties in wetland management and waterbird conservation. The Sardinian wetlands (Italy) act as stopover sites for many migratory birds along the central eastern Mediterranean bird flyway. These wetlands are now severely threatened by human activities and climate change. Accordingly, we built a simulation framework to predict the effects of several counterfactual and management scenarios on the level of avian diversity in the coastal wetlands of Sardinia. We found that the alpha avian diversity (i.e., the mean number of avian species per wetland) is destined to (a) decrease due to the most likely increase in water salinity, water discharges, and tourism pressure; and (b) halve (from 14.9 to 7.4, with 9 wetlands out of 22 predicted to host only between two and five waterbird species) in the worst possible scenario. However, the results also showed that proper management strategies could prevent and reverse such outcomes. Restrictions on tourism activities, water desalination, prevention of future saltwater intrusions, and the prohibition of water discharges could markedly favor the avian diversity in these wetlands, with an expected increase in the alpha avian diversity from 14.9 to 24.8 (and 10 wetlands out of 22 predicted to host from 29 to 32 waterbird species) in the best possible scenario. The Sardinian wetlands belong to the Sardinia‐Corsica corridor of the central eastern Mediterranean bird flyway. They supply the food and shelter for many waterbird species and act as stopover sites during migratory journeys. Despite policies and laws of the European Union, the Sardinian wetlands are severely threatened by anthropic activities and ongoing climate change, making the condition of the associated avifauna critical.We (a) inventoried the avian metacommunity of the largest coastal wetlands in Sardinia during the summer period, (b) investigated the metacommunity structure, (c) quantified the effects of wetland attributes on avian diversity at species and guild level and (d) predicted future changes in species composition of this metacommunity.We recorded 60 bird species (of which 21 belonged to Annex I of the Birds Directive). The metacommunity structure resulted was significantly nested and non‐modular. Salinity negatively affected the presence of 48 species out of 60, followed by tourism pressure (44 species), wetland isolation (42 species) and water discharges (36 species). The mean water level resulting from artificial regulation for anthropic activities was too high for 63% of the species, which disadvantaged primarily small waders, species feeding on invertebrates and trans‐Saharan migrants. In addition, water‐level fluctuations (that would favour avian diversity) were prevented by artificial regulation during the summer period in many wetlands, producing further negative effects on the avifauna. We found 45% of the recorded bird species at risk of disappearance from this avian metacommunity.Synthesis and applications. Our study indicates that, as things stand, the avian metacommunity of the Sardinian wetlands is destined to experience reductions in the short term and mid‐term. This decline will be accelerated by increased saltwater intrusions due to sea‐level rise. Nevertheless, the nested and non‐modular structure of this avian metacommunity would allow for pro‐active conservation measures (e.g. restriction for tourism activities, construction of artificial dune cordons to minimize saltwater intrusions, water‐level regulation that keeps into account also the ecological requirements of waterbird species) to counteract the effects of current and future threats. By pairing to messenger RNAs (mRNAs for short), microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression in animals and plants. Accurately identifying which mRNAs interact with a given miRNA and the precise location of the interaction sites is crucial to reaching a more complete view of the regulatory network of an organism. Only a few experimental approaches, however, allow the identification of both within a single experiment. Computational predictions of miRNA–mRNA interactions thus remain generally the first step used, despite their drawback of a high rate of false-positive predictions. The major computational approaches available rely on a diversity of features, among which anchoring the miRNA seed and measuring mRNA accessibility are the key ones, with the first being universally used, while the use of the second remains controversial. Revisiting the importance of each is the aim of this paper, which uses Cross-Linking, Ligation, And Sequencing of Hybrids (CLASH) datasets to achieve this goal. Contrary to what might be expected, the results are more ambiguous regarding the use of the seed match as a feature, while accessibility appears to be a feature worth considering, indicating that, at least under some conditions, it may favour anchoring by miRNAs. Background: Controversies on sub‐populations most sensitive to therapy and the best timing of starting the treatment still surround the use of immunomodulatory drugs in COVID‐19. Objectives: We designed a multicentre open‐label randomised controlled trial to test the effect of prompt adding of tofacitinib to standard therapy for hospitalised patients affected by mild/moderate COVID‐19 pneumonitis. Methods: Patients admitted to three Italian hospitals affected by COVID‐19 pneumonitis not requiring mechanical ventilation were randomised to receive standard treatment alone or tofacitinib (10 mg/bid) for 2 weeks, starting within the first 24 h from admission. Results: A total of 116 patients were randomised; 49 in the experimental arm completed the 14‐day treatment period, 9 discontinued tofacitinib as the disease worsened and were included in the analysis, and 1 died of respiratory failure. All 58 control patients completed the study. Clinical and demographic characteristics were similar between the study groups. In the tofacitinib group, 9/58 (15.5%) patients progressed to noninvasive ventilation (CPAP) to maintain SO2 > 93%, invasive mechanical ventilation or death by day 14 was 15.5%, significantly less than in the control group (20/58, 34.4%, RR 0,45, RRR −55%, NNT 5; p =.018). No differences in severe adverse effect incidence had been observed across the groups. The cultivation of perennial biomass crops (PBCs) on marginal lands is necessary to provide feedstock for the bio-based EU economy and accrue environmental benefits through carbon (C) sequestration in soil. Short rotation coppice (SRC) species, e.g., willow, black locust, and poplar, and perennial rhizomatous grasses, e.g., miscanthus, switchgrass, and giant reed, have been tested in many EU projects in the last 10 years to investigate their productive potential and contribution to the mitigation of climate change. A major knowledge gap regarding PBCs is the fate of accumulated soil organic carbon (SOC), once PBC plantations are reverted to arable crops. In this study, the effects of PBCs reversion on SOC and carbon-dioxide emission (CO2) were monitored over a 2-year period in a long-term (11-year) multispecies trial of six PBCs: Three SRC species including poplar (Populus spp.), willow (Salix spp.), and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), and three herbaceous rhizomatous grasses including miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), and giant reed (Arundo donax). The SOC change and GHG emissions were then modeled with the ECOSSE model. Two years after the reversion, SOC increased significantly for all PBCs with no significant difference between them. During the PBC cultivation phase, 5.35 Mg SOC ha−1 was sequestered while 10.95 Mg SOC ha−1 was added by reversion, which indicated that 67% of SOC sequestration occurred after the reversion. The ECOSSE model was successfully used to simulate SOC sequestration trajectories (R2 = 0.77) and CO2 emission from soil (R2 = 0.82) after the reversion of the six PBCs. This indicated that the high SOC sequestration rate after the reversion was due to humification of belowground biomass (roots + rhizomes/stumps), which had been mulched and incorporated into the reversion layer (0–30 cm). This occurred in the first 2 months (on average 5.47 Mg SOC ha−1 y−1) and in the first year after the reversion (1.3–1.8 Mg SOC ha−1 y−1). Considering the entire PBCs cultivation cycle (13 years of PBCs + reversion), PBCs showed annual SOC sequestration rates higher than 1 Mg SOC ha−1 y−1, placing PBCs cultivation and reversion as one of the most promising agricultural practices to combine biomass production, with the recovery of marginal lands to agricultural production through increasing the SOC. Simple Summary: Modeling animal space use in 3D is more realistic than confining research to 2D methods and can greatly increase our understanding of interspecific and intraspecific competition, predator–prey relationships, habitat selection and use. In particular, home range overlap/segregation is a fundamental property of animal interactions with deep implications for biodiversity conservation and management. In order to solve the issue of measuring the degree of overlap/segregation among an arbitrarily large number of 3D volumetric home ranges, we introduced the novel non-pairwise index MVOI (Multiple Volumetric Overlap Index) and its complement to 100 MVSI (Multiple Volumetric Segregation Index). Results show that traditional 2D spatial analyses can significantly overestimate the overlap between the individuals, population and species that occupy a habitat with a strong vertical component. Both the MVOI and MVSI can also be used to quantify how the 3D home ranges change over time (i.e., 4D home ranges) and the robustness of 3D home range assessment through the degree of overlap among different 3D estimators. We applied the MVOI and MVSI to birds, but they can be readily applied to any animal species, in particular those with a significant vertical component to their space use. In this study we solved the issue of measuring the degree of overlap/segregation among an arbitrarily large number (n ≥ 2) of 3D volumetric home ranges (i.e., x, y, and hg; where hg is height above ground level) for the first time. For this purpose, we introduced the novel non-pairwise index MVOI (Multiple Volumetric Overlap Index) and its complement to 100 MVSI (Multiple Volumetric Segregation Index). Regardless of the number of 3D volumetric home ranges, the MVOI and MVSI generate a single score of overlap/segregation between 0 and 100, making ecological interpretation much easier and more meaningful when compared to n × n pairwise overlap indices. As a case study, we applied the MVOI and MVSI to 12,081 GPS points of five lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) during the nesting period at Santeramo in Colle (Apulia region; Italy) in an area with the most elevated density of lesser kestrels in urban colonies worldwide. The 3D volumetric home ranges ranged between 1.79 km3 and 8.19 km3. We found that the tracked birds had different vertical profiles, possibly to limit intraspecific competition, resulting in a 3D home range overlap that was only 61.1% of the 2D overlap and 52.8% of the probabilistic one. Background: In oncology, the prevalence of symptoms is preferentially analyzed in isolation instead of being considered in clusters. However, clinical practice shows that symptoms rarely occur separately but rather form clusters that share common underlying mechanisms in terms of intensity and severity, creating a synergistic effect among them, which can even help predict the development of future symptoms. Objective: To identify and gather evidence on the prevalence, composition, severity, and predictors of cancer symptom clusters in adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis protocol was developed in compliance with PRISMA-P. Observational and experimental study designs will be included. MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS, clinical trials.gov-NIH, the British Library, Google Scholar, and preprints [medRXiv] will be searched with no restrictions on idioms, dates, or settings. Two investigators will independently select the studies, perform data extraction, and critically appraise the risk of bias of the included studies. Heterogeneity among the studies will be assessed using the I2 statistic. If meta-analysis was feasible, a random-effect model analysis will be carried out. For data analysis, the pooled effect will be estimated considering 95% confidence interval and α = 5%. In addition, the certainty of evidence will be rated based on Cochrane methods in accordance with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Discussion: To the best of our knowledge, this systematic review and meta-analysis will be the first to identify and critically assess evidence regarding the prevalence, composition, severity, and predictors of cancer symptom clusters in adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. We intend to provide health professionals with subsidies to reflect on a better understanding of symptom clusters in adult cancer patients, with the aim of contributing to the development of evidence-based therapeutic interventions and success in clinical practice. Our study shows that the current levels of anthropogenic exploitation of the Sicilian wetlands (Italy), combined with the likely exacerbation of climate-driven variables, are unsustainable and could soon exclude many bird species from this metacommunity. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and its wetlands represent a network of unreplaceable stopover sites that allow waterbirds to rest and refuel during migratory journeys along the central-eastern Mediterranean bird flyway. During the summer period, these species experience higher levels of environmental stress as water scarcity and anthropogenic pressure are at their peak. Through field surveys, geoprocessing and statistical analyses, we investigated: (a) the structure of the avian metacommunity of the largest Sicilian wetlands during July–September and (b) the effects of 10 (geographic, hydrological and anthropogenic) wetland attributes on avian diversity. We sampled 73 bird species, of which 30 are listed in annex I of the Birds Directive. The avian metacommunity was significantly nested and non-modular; in addition, it presented elevated beta diversity and random species assemblage. Environmental filtering superseded biotic interactions in determining species composition. Avian diversity was significantly favored by higher water levels, water-level fluctuations and water discharges, and disfavored by water diversion, salinity and tourism pressure. The knowledge concerning the particular structure of the avian metacommunity of the Sicilian wetlands can facilitate the implementation of conservation policies that could mitigate and compensate the effects of short- and mid-term risks. Visual place recognition (VPR) is a robot’s ability to determine whether a place was visited before using visual data. While conventional handcrafted methods for VPR fail under extreme environmental appearance changes, those based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) achieve state-of-the-art performance but result in heavy runtime processes and model sizes that demand a large amount of memory. Hence, CNN-based approaches are unsuitable for resource-constrained platforms, such as small robots and drones. In this article, we take a multistep approach of decreasing the precision of model parameters, combining it with network depth reduction and fewer neurons in the classifier stage to propose a new class of highly compact models that drastically reduces the memory requirements and computational effort while maintaining state-of-the-art VPR performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to propose binary neural networks for solving the VPR problem effectively under changing conditions and with significantly reduced resource requirements. Our best-performing binary neural network, dubbed FloppyNet, achieves comparable VPR performance when considered against its full-precision and deeper counterparts while consuming 99% less memory and increasing the inference speed by seven times. Viruses have evolved numerous mechanisms to exploit the molecular machinery of their host cells, including the broad spectrum of host RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). However, the RBP interactomes of most viruses are largely unknown. To shed light on the interaction landscape of RNA viruses with human host cell RBPs, we have analysed 197 single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) viral genome sequences and found that the majority of ssRNA virus genomes are significantly enriched or depleted in motifs for specific human RBPs, suggesting selection pressure on these interactions. To facilitate tailored investigations and the analysis of genomes sequenced in future, we have released our methodology as a fast and user-friendly computational toolbox named SMEAGOL. The conservation of threatened species is prevalently oriented towards two management strategies, i.e., habitat-level and species-level approaches. The former is focused on improving the conditions of the habitat of a certain species, whereas the latter is aimed at directly strengthening the species of interest. In this work, we adopted a different solution based on a community-level approach. Firstly, we identified the species (predators, competitors, prey) that interact with the species of interest (the lesser kestrel, Falco naumanni) in Southern Italy and mapped all of the ecological interactions among these species. Secondly, we built a simulation framework of the entire ecological network of the lesser kestrel. Thirdly, we simulated different management strategies that could increase the lesser kestrel population stock by targeting the species that interact with it. We found that the lesser kestrel in Southern Italy can be effectively protected by targeting the species interacting with the lesser kestrel, and that natural changes in the abundance of the interacting species could be used to pro-actively predict the dynamics of the lesser kestrel population. Our study demonstrates that a community-level approach to species conservation is highly appropriate on a local scale. Our methodological framework, based on qualitative modeling and what-if scenarios, can be applied in the absence of quantitative estimations of population stocks and interaction strengths. Recent numerical simulations of hard helical particle systems unveiled the existence of a novel chiral nematic phase, termed screw-like, characterised by the helical organization of the particle C2 symmetry axes round the nematic director with periodicity equal to the particle pitch. This phase forms at high density and can follow a less dense uniform nematic phase, with relative occurrence of the two phases depending on the helix morphology. Since these numerical simulations were conducted under three-dimensional periodic boundary conditions, two questions could remain open. First, the real nature of the lower density nematic phase, expected to be cholesteric. Second, the influence that the latter, once allowed to form, may have on the existence and stability of the screw-like nematic phase. To address these questions, we have performed Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics numerical simulations of helical particle systems confined between two parallel repulsivewalls. We have found that the removal of the periodicity constraint along one direction allows a relatively-long-pitch cholesteric phase to form, in lieu of the uniform nematic phase, with helical axis perpendicular to the walls while the existence and stability of the screw-like nematic phase are not appreciably affected by this change of boundary conditions. Bone marrow reactive T-cell infiltrates have been frequently observed in patients affected by follicular lymphoma after rituximab treatment. In some studies, bone-marrow T-cell expansion has been associated with an effective anti-tumor response and favorable prognosis. In this manuscript, we report on a particularly brisk CD4+ T-cell reaction occurring after rituximab treatment for follicular lymphoma and involving the peripheral blood in addition to the bone marrow. There is increasing interestin broad‐scale analysis, modeling, and prediction of the distribution and composition of plant species assemblages under climatic, environmental, and biotic change, particularly for conservation purposes. We devised a method to reliably predict the impact of climate change on large assemblages of plant communities, while also considering competing biotic and environmental factors. To this purpose, we first used multilabel algorithms in order to convert the task of explaining a large assemblage of plant communities into a classification framework able to capture with high cross‐validated accuracy the pattern of species distributions under a composite set of biotic and abiotic factors. We applied our model to a large set of plant communities in the Swiss Alps. Our model explained presences and absences of 175 plant species in 608 plots with >87% cross‐validated accuracy, predicted decreases in α, β, and γ diversity by 2040 under both moderate and extreme climate scenarios, and identified likely advantaged and disadvantaged plant species under climate change. Multilabel variable selection revealed the overriding importance of topography, soils, and temperature extremes (rather than averages) in determining the distribution of plant species in the study area and their response to climate change. Our method addressed a number of challenging research problems, such as scaling to large numbers of species, considering species relationships and rarity, and addressing an overwhelming proportion of absences in presence–absence matrices. By handling hundreds to thousands of plants and plots simultaneously over large areas, our method can inform broad‐scale conservation of plant species under climate change because it allows species that require urgent conservation action (assisted migration, seed conservation, and ex situ conservation) to be detected and prioritized. Our method also increases the practicality of assisted colonization of plant species by helping to prevent ill‐advised introduction of plant species with limited future survival probability. Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) relapsing on ibrutinib are often treated with the Bcl-2 inhibitor venetoclax. However, the transition from one agent to another poses some clinical challenges due to disease flares sometimes occurring right after ibrutinib interruption. Here, we describe three clinical vignettes highlighting two distinct patterns of ibrutinib-to-venetoclax transition. While patients following the favorable pattern transited to venetoclax without experiencing disease flare, the one patient who took the unfavorable path showed rapid disease rebound, with large-cell transformation occurring one week after ibrutinib interruption. A high burden of BTK and PLCG2 mutations was found only in patients with the favorable transition pattern, suggesting that removing BTK inhibition might be particularly harmful if CLL cells are progressing through mechanisms external to the BTK axis. The transformations in the grain structure (corn, soybean and wheat) in Paraná provide relevant information on the dynamics of the state's agricultural activity. For this analysis, the shift-share tooling is used here in order to decommince its effects on the area, production and yield. Among the results are the spatial displacement of corn production, resulting from the expansion of safrinha corn, and the predominant yield effect on the area effect for soybean and corn. The general objective of the study is to present a comparative analysis of the evolution of irrigated areas and the use of water in agriculture for the municipalities of Paraná. For such discussion to be possible, data from irrigated areas and technical coefficient of water use are used. The results are presented, first, for areas of municipal irrigated agriculture and, later, for the use of water in cubic meters (m3/year). The results show that the municipalities with the greatest advance in the advisory use of water resources for irrigated agriculture would be Rosario do Ivaí, in an additional 153%; Wenceslau Braz, with expected expansion of 140%; Peabiru, with expansion of 86%; and Quatro Pontes, with an advance of 108%. Other municipalities would tend to reduce consuntive use, such as Rebouças and Campina da Lagoa, but the expectation of advancing water use would remain in an additional 18.9% in the State, from just over 190 million m3/year in 2017 to more than 226 million m3/year in 2030. Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a radiotherapy whose effect is due to the combination of low-energy neutron irradiation prior chemical targeting of tumour tissues with boron-10. The context of this work is the design of a clinical BNCT facility based on a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole proton accelerator, manufactured by the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). Such a machine can provide a neutron beam suitable for the treatment of deep-seated tumours when coupled to a beryllium target and a Beam Shaping Assembly whose main constituent is densified lithiated aluminium fluoride. This paper refines the design of the facility, already addressed in preliminary studies, from the point of view of dosimetric quantities in the room and in the patient. The presented calculations have been performed with different Monte Carlo codes, and assess the time evolution of the dose due to the neutron activation of the irradiated materials. A comprehensive evaluation of the dose absorbed in the healthy organs of the patient is provided, with focus on the residual radioactivity of the patient urine, for three different treatment positions. Borated concrete is confirmed to be the best material for constructing the walls of the treatment room. Background: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is an ovarian defect characterized by primary or secondary amenorrhea, hypergonadotropism and hypoestrogenism which occurs before the age of 40 years with a major genetic component. In this study we performed clinical evaluation and genetic analysis of a group of 18 patients with POI. The study involved 18 consecutive women with POI. Karyotiping and genetic analysis for research of mutations in GDF9 (Growth Differentation Factor 9) and BMP15 (Bone morphogentic protein 15) genes and FMR1 (Fragile X Mental Retardation 1) premutation were carried out. In vitro functional study of the novel BMP15 mutation was performed using COV434 (Human ovarian granulosa tumour cells 434) cells of ovarian granulosa, which consistently express BMP responsive element, and luciferase reporter assay. Results: Three patients (17%) had a family history of POI. Ten patients (56%) had a family history of autoimmune diseases and nine patients (50%) showed a personal history of one or more autoimmune diseases. Of patients for whom morphological assessment was available, almost half (44%) had poor follicle assets or small ovaries's size at pelvic US. Two patients (13%) showed reduced bone density at DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry). All the women had normal female kariotype and no mutations in the GDF-9 gene or FMR1 premutations were found. A novel heterozygous mutation c.406G > C (V136L) of BMP15 gene was identified in one patient. After transfection in COV434 cells, BMP15 variant showed a significantly reduced luciferase activity compared to wild type. Conclusions: POI is a multifactorial disease with several health implications. Autoimmunity and genetics represent the most common aetiology. Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic pain and associated comorbidities such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. There is a large amount of evidence regarding the benefits of physical exercise in controlling chronic pain. However, there is no consensus on which exercise modality is most suitable and the real benefits of this intervention to treat FM symptoms. The present study investigated the analgesic and antidepressant effects and morphophysiological responses induced by different physical exercise (aerobic and strength protocols) during the experimental model of FM. Spontaneous pain, mechanical hyperalgesia, thermal allodynia, depression-related behavior, and locomotor activity were evaluated weekly, as well as the morphological evaluation of the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion. Aerobic and strength training protocols consistently abolished nociceptive behaviors, reducing spontaneous pain scores, cold allodynia, and frequency of response to mechanical hyperalgesia. The strength exercise modulated the depressive-like behavior. Finally, our data demonstrated that physical exercise performed for two weeks increased the number of glial cells in the dorsal root horn. However, it was not sufficient to control the other deleterious effects of the reserpine model on the spinal cord and the dorsal root. Together, these results demonstrated that different physical exercise modalities, when performed regularly in mice, proved to be effective and safe non-pharmacological alternatives for the treatment of FM. Objective. Total lung capacity (TLC) assessment outside of a research laboratory is challenging. We describe a novel method for measuring TLC that is both simple and based only on portable equipment, and report preliminary data in healthy subjects. Approach. We developed an open circuit system to administer a known amount of oxygen to a subject in a single maximal inspiratory maneuver. Oxygen fraction, expired and inspired flows were continuously monitored to allow a precise computation of the mass balance. Values of TLC and functional residual capacity (FRC) were compared with standard methods (body plethysmography and multiple-breath helium dilution). Twenty healthy subjects participated to the study, eleven of which performed the maneuver twice to assess test-retest reliability. Main results. There was high agreement in TLC between the proposed method and the two standard methods (R2 > 0.98, bias not different from 0, and 95% limits of agreements <± 0.4 l for both). Test-retest reliability was high (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.99 and no bias). Results were similar for FRC, with a slightly higher variability due its sensitivity to changes in posture or breathing pattern. Significance. Single-breath oxygen dilution is accurate and reliable in assessing TLC and FRC in healthy subjects. The novel betacoronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a worldwide pandemic (COVID-19) after emerging in Wuhan, China. Here we analyzed public host and viral RNA sequencing data to better understand how SARS-CoV-2 interacts with human respiratory cells. We identified genes, isoforms and transposable element families that are specifically altered in SARS-CoV-2-infected respiratory cells. Well-known immunoregulatory genes including CSF2, IL32, IL-6 and SERPINA3 were differentially expressed, while immunoregulatory transposable element families were upregulated. We predicted conserved interactions between the SARS-CoV-2 genome and human RNA-binding proteins such as the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNPA1) and eukaryotic initiation factor 4 (eIF4b). We also identified a viral sequence variant with a statistically significant skew associated with age of infection, that may contribute to intracellular host–pathogen interactions. These findings can help identify host mechanisms that can be targeted by prophylactics and/or therapeutics to reduce the severity of COVID-19. Background: Published reports on tocilizumab in COVID‐19 pneumonitis show conflicting results due to weak designs or heterogeneity in critical methodological issues. Methods: This open‐label trial, structured according to Simon's optimal design, aims to identify factors predicting which patients could benefit from anti‐IL6 strategies and to enhance the design of unequivocal and reliable future randomized trials. A total of 46 patients with COVID‐19 pneumonia needing of oxygen therapy to maintain SO2 > 93% and with recent worsening of lung function received a single infusion of tocilizumab. Clinical and biological markers were measured to test their predictive values. Primary end point was early and sustained clinical response. Results: Twenty‐one patients fulfilled pre‐defined response criteria. Lower levels of IL‐6 at 24 h after tocilizumab infusion (P = 0.049) and higher baseline values of PaO2/FiO2 (P = 0.008) predicted a favourable response. Conclusions: Objective clinical response rate overcame the pre‐defined threshold of 30%. The objectives were to identify the knowledge of community health workers (CHW) about viral hepatitis (VH), to verify whether lectures improve these knowledge and to check for any association between CHW knowledge and years of practice and previous educational training. In this cross-sectional study, 674 CHW, from six municipalities in the state of Espirito Santo (Southeast Brazil), answered a questionnaire about VH before and after lectures concerning this issue. Scores of the questionnaires and the proportions of correct and wrong answers, before and after lectures, were compared by Wilcoxon and McNemar test, respectively. The association of knowledge with years of experience and previous educational training was explored by Mann-Whitney test. The p value was set at 0.05. CHW presented low levels of knowledge about VH before lectures; these levels increased after lectures; and there was no association between CHW knowledge about VH and years of practice or previous training. The cultivation of perennial energy crops (PECs) couples the production of ligno‐cellulosic biomass to the provision of multiple ecosystem services, such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of climate change through carbon (C) sequestration in soil. Though C sequestration in soil by PECs has been widely studied, the contribution of their belowground biomass (BGB) to soil C sequestration and their influence on soil nitrogen (N) storage potential has received very little attention. In this study, C and N stocks in soil and BGB fractions (plant belowground organs and fine roots) were measured for six PECs (Populus spp. 'Poplar', Robinia pseudoacacia 'Black locust', Salix spp. 'Willow', Arundo donax 'Giant reed', Miscanthus × giganteus 'Miscanthus' and Panicum virgatum 'Switchgrass') grown on marginal soil, 11 years after establishment. All PECs had a higher soil organic carbon (SOC) stock and soil total nitrogen (STN) stock than arable land in the top (0–10 cm) soil layer. In this same top layer, woody crops had the highest SOC stock. The increase in SOC under PECs led to increased soil porosity in the top‐soil layer. On average, 43% of the belowground C stock of PECs was allocated in the plant belowground organs (PBO; i.e. in the rhizomes of herbaceous PECs and the stump for woody PECs). Giant reed had the highest C stock in PBO, whereas switchgrass the lowest (22.7 vs. 5.9 Mg C ha−1). On the contrary, switchgrass had the highest C stock in fine roots. Giant reed had the highest belowground C stock (sum of soil and BGB contribution) and black locust the highest belowground N stock. A lignin sample was extracted from Eucalyptus grandis sawdust, by the Klason method, and used as adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. By using a set of complementary analytical tools, the lignin appeared to be constituted of oxygenated functional groups and aromatic moieties, while showing a specific surface area of 20 m2 g−1 and polydisperse particles. Different experimental conditions with various solid to liquid ratio, pH, as well as other external experimental parameters were investigated for the removal of MB by the lignin sample. The experimental adsorption data at the equilibrium were properly fitted by Langmuir model, while adsorption kinetical isotherms were correctly adjusted by the pseudo-second order model. The MB removal by lignin was spontaneous involving physisorption mechanisms leading to a saturation of the adsorption sites with a maximum adsorbed amount of about 32 mg g−1. The data acquired in this study also emphasized the interests to use lignin as potential adsorbent in the light of its properties for the removal of cationic dyes, including MB, with possible recycling and reuse cycles of lignin without any significant loss of its properties. The Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) is a species of high international conservation interest. We analyzed its hunting behavior at the two largest colonies in Italy during the nestling period. Using accurate data-loggers, we tracked three adult Red-footed Falcons in June and July, 2019 and collected 4703 GPS points. We detected clear patterns of hovering and perching activity (HPA) in both time and space. HPA occupied one-third of the Red-footed Falcons' day, and showed two peaks just after sunrise (between 35 and 40% of the monitoring time) and just before sunset (50‒60%) in both June and July, and minimum (20‒30%) at night and during the hottest time interval (10:00 a.m.‒4:00 p.m.). Almost 40% of HPA occurred within 50 m from nests. Our findings, although preliminary, have important implications for the conservation of these two colonies that are located within two Natura 2000 sites. The detected spatio-temporal patterns of Red-footed Falcons' hunting behavior suggests the creation of two nested protection belts: the inner one is a narrow belt (up to 50 m from the two rows of trees that host the two colonies) with integral conservation, and hopefully increase the alfalfa crops and fallow land, and the outer belt (50 m‒2 km) with optimized agricultural activities. Endovascular treatment of the femoro-popliteal artery has recently become a valuable therapeutic option for popliteal arterial aneurysms. However, its efficacy remains controversial due to the relatively high rate of complications, such as stent occlusion as result of intra-stent thrombosis. The elucidation of the interplay among vessel geometrical features, local hemodynamics, and leg bending seems crucial to understand onset and progression of popliteal intra-stent thrombosis. To this aim, patient-specific computational fluid dynamic simulations were performed in order to assess the intra-stent hemodynamics of two patients endovascularly treated for popliteal arterial aneurysm by stent-grafts and experiencing intra-stent thrombosis. Both Newtonian and non-Newtonian blood rheological models were considered. Results were presented in terms of tortuosity, luminal area exposed to low (< 0.4 Pa) and high (> 1.5 Pa) time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), area exposed to high (> 0.3) oscillatory shear index (OSI), and flow helicity. Study outcomes demonstrated that leg bending induced significant hemodynamic differences (> 50% increase) in both patients for all the considered variables, except for OSI in one of the two considered patients. In both leg configurations, stent-graft overlapping induced a severe discontinuity of the lumen diameter where the proximal stented zone is characterized by low tortuosity, low velocity, low helicity, low TAWSS, and high OSI; while the distal part has higher tortuosity, velocity, helicity, TAWSS, and lower OSI. Sensitivity study on applied boundary conditions showed that the different inlet velocity profiles for a given inlet waveform affect slightly the numerical solution; conversely, the shape and magnitude of the prescribed inlet waveform is determinant. Focusing on the comparison between the Newtonian and non-Newtonian blood models, the area with low TAWSS is greater in the Newtonian model for both patients, while no significant difference occurs between the surfaces with high TAWSS. In the present study, a popliteal aneurysm was treated with endovascular deployment of two overlapped stent-grafts, showing intra-stent thrombosis at one-year follow-up examination. Patient-specific computational fluid-dynamics analyses including straight- and bent-leg position were performed. The computational fluid-dynamics analysis showed that the overlapping of the stent-grafts induces a severe discontinuity of lumen, dividing the stented artery in two regions: the proximal part, affected by thrombosis, is characterized by larger diameter, low tortuosity, low flow velocity, low helicity, and low wall shear stress; the distal part presents higher tortuosity and smaller lumen diameter promoting higher flow velocity, higher helicity, and higher wall shear stress. This article focuses on Italian Fascist propaganda in Finland. Federico Finchelstein (2010) characterised fascism as a global-transnational doctrine with diverse reformulations, ramifications and permutations. Therefore, the Finnish case-study is useful in the analysis of Mussolini's twin struggle against Soviet Communism and the increasing Nazi threat in the Baltic in the 1930s and 1940s. This article will examine how Mussolini tried to keep in touch with Finnish fascists after Hitler's rise to power. Organisations and groups like the Lapua Movement and the Finnish Patriotic People's Movement were inspired by Italian Fascism and the success of the March on Rome encouraged their hope that they could take power in Finland. The ultimate failure of Finnish fascism has ensured the continued marginalisation of fascism as a research subject in the Finnish academic tradition. Yet, as Roger Griffin suggests, studies of peripheral and failed fascisms can also contribute important insights for understanding both the 'centre' of fascism, as well as modern nationalist extremist movements. Here we discuss the use of deuteriated probe molecules in NMR studies of the nematic (N) and twist-bend nematic (NTB) phases formed by the generic liquid crystal dimer CB7CB. The key properties of three probes dissolved in the NTB phase investigated are the orientational order SzzB and the conical angle, θ0, of the director with respect to the spectrometer field. In addition for one probe 5CB-d2 it is possible to obtain a measure of the phase chirality from the difference in the quadrupolar splittings given by the prochiral pair of deuterons. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the most costly pathogen for swine production. Although several studies have focused on the host-bacterium association, little is known about the changes in gene expression of swine cells upon infection. To improve our understanding of this interaction, we infected swine epithelial NPTr cells with M. hyopneumoniae strain J to identify differentially expressed mRNAs and miRNAs. The levels of 1,268 genes and 170 miRNAs were significantly modified post-infection. Up-regulated mRNAs were enriched in genes related to redox homeostasis and antioxidant defense, known to be regulated by the transcription factor NRF2 in related species. Down-regulated mRNAs were enriched in genes associated with cytoskeleton and ciliary functions. Bioinformatic analyses suggested a correlation between changes in miRNA and mRNA levels, since we detected down-regulation of miRNAs predicted to target antioxidant genes and up-regulation of miRNAs targeting ciliary and cytoskeleton genes. Interestingly, most down-regulated miRNAs were detected in exosome-like vesicles suggesting that M. hyopneumoniae infection induced a modification of the composition of NPTr-released vesicles. Taken together, our data indicate that M. hyopneumoniae elicits an antioxidant response induced by NRF2 in infected cells. Background: The androgen receptor (AR) is a nuclear receptor, encoded by the AR gene on the X chromosome. Within the first exon of the AR gene, two short tandem repeats (STR), CAG and GGC, are a source of polymorphism in the population. Therefore, high‐throughput methods for screening AR, such as next‐generation sequencing (NGS), are sought after; however, data generated by NGS are limited by the availability of bioinformatics tools. Here, we evaluated the accuracy of the bioinformatics tool HipSTR in detecting and quantify CAG repeats within the AR gene. Method: The AR gene of 228 infertile men was sequenced using NGSgene panel. Data generated were analyzed with HipSTR to detect CAG repeats. The accuracy was compared with the results obtained with Sanger. Results: We found that HipSTR was more accurate than Sanger in genotyping normal karyotype men (46,XY), however, it was more likely to misidentify homozygote genotypes in men with Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY). Conclusion: Our findings show that the bioinformatics tool HipSTR is 100% accurate in detecting and assessing AR CAG repeats in infertile men (46,XY) as well as in men with low‐level mosaicism. Motivation Analysis of differential expression of genes is often performed to understand how the metabolic activity of an organism is impacted by a perturbation. However, because the system of metabolic regulation is complex and all changes are not directly reflected in the expression levels, interpreting these data can be difficult. Results In this work, we present a new algorithm and computational tool that uses a genome-scale metabolic reconstruction to infer metabolic changes from differential expression data. Using the framework of constraint-based analysis, our method produces a qualitative hypothesis of a change in metabolic activity. In other words, each reaction of the network is inferred to have increased, decreased, or remained unchanged in flux. In contrast to similar previous approaches, our method does not require a biological objective function and does not assign on/off activity states to genes. An implementation is provided and it is available online. We apply the method to three published datasets to show that it successfully accomplishes its two main goals: confirming or rejecting metabolic changes suggested by differentially expressed genes based on how well they fit in as parts of a coordinated metabolic change, as well as inferring changes in reactions whose genes did not undergo differential expression. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) pathogenesis is strongly related to the role of the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) in which MCL cells proliferate. TIME cells can produce growth signals influencing MCL cells' survival and exert an antitumoral immune response suppression. The activity of TIME cells might be mirrored by some ratios of peripheral blood cell subpopulations, such as the monocyte-to-platelet ratio (MPR). We reviewed the clinical features of 165 consecutive MCL patients newly diagnosed and not eligible for autologous stem cell transplantation (both for age or comorbidities) who accessed two Italian Centers between 2006 and 2020. MPR was calculated using data obtained from the complete blood cell count at diagnosis before any cytotoxic treatment and correlated with PFS. Univariate analysis showed that MPR ≥ 3 was associated with inferior PFS (p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis confirmed that MPR ≥ 3, LDH > 2.5 ULN, and bone marrow involvement were significant independent variables in predicting PFS. For these reasons, MPR ≥ 3 seems the most promising prognostic factor in patients with MCL, and it could be considered a variable in new predictive models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Obesity is a chronic disease caused by excessive consumption of high-calorie foods that is associated with conditions such as dyslipidemia, diabetes, and cancer. Protium heptaphyllum (P. heptaphyllum) is known in folk medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties, and its resin has demonstrated anti-obesity effects. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of liposomes containing the ethyl acetate fraction from P. heptaphyllum leaves on obesity in male Wistar rats. The animals became obese through a high-calorie diet and were treated with a liposome formulation containing P. heptaphyllum for 14 days. The study evaluated several parameters in adipose and liver tissues. Despite some positive effects on liver function and inflammation, the treatment did not attenuate global changes related to obesity, such as weight gain and fat accumulation. This highlights the complexity of obesity treatment and the varied responses of different organs to P. heptaphyllum liposomes. This study evaluated the effect of liposomes containing the ethyl acetate fraction of the crude extract of P. heptaphyllum leaves on obesity. Male Wistar rats treated with a high-calorie diet for 8 weeks to induce obesity received treatment with the liposome formulation containing P. heptaphyllum extract (1 mg/kg/day, via gavage) for 14 days. Morphological, metabolic, redox status, immunological, and histological parameters were evaluated in the adipose and liver tissue of the animals. The groups were divided as follows: C: control; P: liposomes containing extract; O: obese, and OP: obese + liposomes containing extract. The obesity model resulted in increases in body weight, caloric intake, body fat weight, and in the lipid profile. In adipose tissue, P decreased SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity in obese animals. In the liver, a positive modulation of the extract was observed in relation to glucose, amino acids, lactate, hepatoprotective action, and anti-inflammatory activity, with a decrease in interleukin 1β (IL-1β) in obese animals. The results showed an improvement in the functional and inflammatory aspects, but the treatment was not effective in alleviating general changes related to obesity, such as weight gain, fat, glucose, triglycerides, and inflammation in adipose tissue, highlighting the complexity of responses in different organs during obesity and treatment with P. heptaphyllum. B-DNA solutions of suitable concentration form left-handed chiral nematic phases (cholesterics). Such phases have also been observed in solutions of other stiff or semiflexible chiral polymers; magnitude and handedness of the cholesteric pitch are uniquely related to the molecular features. In this work we present a theoretical method and a numerical procedure which, starting from the structure of polyelectrolytes, lead to the prediction of the cholesteric pitch. Molecular expressions for the free energy of the system are obtained on the basis of steric and electrostatic interactions between polymers; the former are described in terms of excluded volume, while a mean field approximation is used for the latter. Calculations have been performed for 130 base pair fragments of B-DNA. The theoretical predictions provide an explanation for the experimental behavior, by showing the counteracting role played by shape and charge chirality of the molecule. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. This paper reports a theory for the dielectric relaxation of dimeric mesogenic molecules in a nematic liquid crystal phase. Liquid crystal dimers consist of two mesogenic groups linked by a flexible chain. Recent experimental studies [D. A. Dunmur, G. R. Luckhurst, M. R. de la Fuente, S. Diez, and M. A. Perez Jubindo, J. Chem. Phys. 115, 8681 (2001)] of the dielectric properties of polar liquid crystal dimers have found unexpected results for both the static (low frequency) and variable frequency dielectric response of these materials. The theory developed in this paper provides a quantitative model with which to understand the observed experimental results. The mean-square dipole moments of α,ω-bis[(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl]alkanes in a nematic phase have been calculated using both the rotational isomeric state model and a full torsional potential for the carbon-carbon bonds of the flexible chain. The orienting effect of the nematic phase is taken into account by a parametrized potential of mean torque acting on the mesogenic groups and the segments in the flexible chain. Results of calculations using the full torsional potential are in excellent agreement with experimental results for comparable systems. The probability density peq(βA,βB) for the orientation of the mesogenic groups (A,B) along the nematic director is also calculated. The resultant potential of mean torque is a surface characterized by four deep energy wells or sites equivalent to alignment of the terminal groups A and B approximately parallel and antiparallel to the director; of course, the reversal of the director leads to equivalent sites. This potential energy surface provides the basis for a kinetic model of dielectric relaxation in nematic dimers. Solution of the Fokker-Planck equation corresponding to this four-site model gives the time dependence of the site populations, and hence the time-correlation functions for the total dipole moment along the director. In this model the end-over-end rotation of the molecule, corresponding to simulataneous reversal of both mesogenic groups, is excluded because the activation energy is too large. Results are presented for a number of cases, in which a dipole is located on one or both of the mesogenic groups, and additionally where the groups differ in size. For the latter, under particular conditions, the correlation function exhibits a biexponential decay, which corresponds to two low frequency absorptions in the dielectric spectrum. This is exactly what has been observed for nonsymmetric nematic dimers having different groups terminating a flexible chain. Experimental results over a range of temperature for the nonsymmetric dimer α-[(4-cyanobiphenyl)-4′-yloxy]-ω-(4-decylanilinebenzylidene-4′-oxy)nonane can be fitted precisely to the theory, which provides new insight into the orientational and conformational dynamics of molecules in ordered liquid crystalline phases. © 2004 American Institute of Physics.
