While a growing body of work suggests that women representatives are less likely to be involved in corruption scandals, we know less about if changes in representation patterns also have implications for citizens' first-hand experiences with corruption in public service delivery. This study suggests that women elected representatives reduce street level bribery, in particular when the share of women increases in contexts where relatively few women are elected or when the absolute increase in women's representation is relatively large. Using newly collected data on the share of women in 128 regional level parliaments in 10 European countries and four rounds of the European Quality of Government Index (EQI) survey (2010–2021), our two-way fixed effects models show that on average, the proportion of women in regional parliaments is strongly associated with citizens' self-reported experiences of bribery across all countries and years. Furthermore, our difference-in-difference design shows that the level of bribery in public service provision dropped more sharply in regions that experienced a greater absolute or greater marginal increase in women's representation. Our results may be understood in light of women candidates placing priority on well-functioning and low corrupt public service provision and the important signals of inclusiveness, non-discrimination and decreased tolerance towards corruption that women's representation conveys to civil servants. Studying prosociality in rodents can provide insight into brain mechanisms potentially related to neurodevelopmental disorders known to impact social behaviors (e.g., autism spectrum disorder). While many studies have been published suggesting promising models, current knowledge remains scattered, including potential factors mediating prosocial behaviors in rodents. Prosocial behavior is characterized by an action done to benefit another or promote their well-being. The goal of this scoping review is to characterize current findings regarding prosocial paradigms in rodents, highlight current gaps in reporting, and identify factors shown to be important in mediating prosocial responses in rodents. Five databases were consulted in search of relevant studies published between 2000 and 2020 (APA PsycInfo, Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science). An update using a semi-supervised machine learning approach (ASReview) was then conducted to collect studies from 2021–2023. In total, 80 articles were included. Findings were the following: (1) Three categories of prosocial paradigm were extracted: cooperation, helping, and sharing tasks, (2) Rodents showed the ability to perform prosocial actions in all three categories, (3) Significant gaps in reported methodologies (e.g., failure to report animals' characteristics, housing conditions, and/or experimental protocol) and mediating factors (e.g., sex, strain, housing, food restriction) were found, and (4) Behaviors are determinant when investigating prosociality in rodents, however many studies omitted to include such analyses. Together these results inform future studies on the impact of mediating factors and the importance of behavioral analyses on the expression of prosocial behaviors in rodents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building on research on cultural threat‐induced polarization, we investigate the effect of the individual‐level salience of cultural threats on polarization between social liberals and conservatives. In a unique survey experiment conducted with 129,000 respondents nested in 208 regions in 27 European Union (EU) member states, we manipulate the presence of two cultural threats, women's rights, and refugee immigration, to test their polarizing effects on social liberals' and social conservatives' support for traditional values. We find that priming the threat of refugee immigration polarizes conservatives and liberals equally. Yet, introducing the salience of women's rights leads to lower preferences for traditional values, particularly among more liberal respondents. Our findings demonstrate: 1) the study of backlash should distinguish individuals by their predisposition to backlash, rather than studying the population as a whole; and 2) social conservatives' backlash should be studied conjointly with social liberals' counter‐reactions to backlash. Background. As cancer survivorship continues to improve, the perioperative morbidity and mortality following surgical treatment of metastatic bone disease become an increasingly important consideration. The objective of this study is to identify risk factors for early postoperative complications and mortality following extremity prophylactic fixation and pathologic fracture stabilization. Methods. A single‐centre retrospective review of 185 patients (226 total surgeries) who underwent prophylactic fixation or pathologic fracture stabilization for extremity metastatic bone disease between 2005 and 2020 was performed. Skull, spine, pelvic, and revision surgeries along with diagnosis of primary bone neoplasm were excluded. Univariate, multivariate, and subgroup analyses were performed to identify predictors and independent risk factors for 30‐day postoperative morbidity and mortality. Results. Primary cancers included lung (n = 41), breast (n = 36), multiple myeloma (n = 35), prostate (n = 16), lymphoma (n = 11), renal cell carcinoma (n = 10), and other (n = 36). The 30‐day postoperative complication and mortality rates were 32.30% (n = 73) and 17.26% (n = 39), respectively. The most common complications were pulmonary‐related, cardiac events, surgical site infection, sepsis, and thromboembolism. Pathologic fracture, presence of extra‐skeletal metastases, longer surgical duration, and blood transfusion requirements were associated with 30‐day postoperative complications overall. A past medical history for cardiac disease was also associated with systemic but not local surgical complications. Pathologic fracture, presence of extra‐skeletal metastases, lung cancer, blood transfusion requirements, and increasing pack‐year smoking history were predictors for 30‐day mortality. In the multivariate analysis, pathologic fracture (p = 0.016) and presence of extra‐skeletal metastases (p = 0.029) were independent predictors of complications. For mortality, pathologic fracture (p = 0.014), presence of extra‐skeletal metastases (p = 0.0085), and increased blood transfusion requirements (p = 0.048) were independent risk factors. Conclusions. The findings of this study provide additional guidance for perioperative risk assessment and patient counselling. Additionally, improving clinical assessment tools to identify and quantify patients at risk of pathologic fractures becomes increasingly important given the significant morbidity and mortality associated with pathologic fracture treatment. Many strains from the Bacillus subtilis species complex exert strong plant growth‐promoting activities. However, their efficacy in relevant conditions is variable, due in part to their inability to establish a strong interaction with roots in stressful environmental conditions. Adaptative laboratory evolution (ALE) is a powerful tool to generate novel strains with traits of interest. Many Bacillus evolved isolates, stemming from ALE performed with plants, possess a stronger root colonization capacity. An in‐depth analysis of these isolates also allowed the identification of key features influencing the interaction with plant roots. However, many variables can influence the outcome of these assays, and thus, caution should be taken when designing ALE destined to generate better root colonizers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the design as well as on the experimental and numerical validations of the mechanical behavior of a precast ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) retaining walls. The design, made in accordance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6, 2019), led to the fabrication of a full-scale UHPFRC retaining wall with 3% fibre content which had dimensions of 3 m in height, 2 m in length, 2 m in width, with two vertical and horizontal stiffeners, and very thin vertical and horizontal panels of 40 and 65 mm, respectively. The experimental tests showed that the UHPFRC retaining wall exceeded by 42% the ultimate limit state (ULS) design factored bending moment and showed a very ductile behavior under flexural loading. At service limit state (SLS), the retaining wall had maximum crack opening between 0.15 and 0.28 mm, and a maximum lateral displacement of 4 mm. The finite-element model developed for the application captured accurately the flexural behavior of the UHPFRC retaining wall and was used later in parametric studies to optimize the design. The retaining wall optimal design includes UHPFRC with 3% fibre content and stiffeners with variable cross-section which allows volume reductions of 73% for concrete and 86% for rebars in comparison to the conventional reinforced concrete design. The utilization of ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) as lateral or U-shaped thin layers to strengthen the shear-deficient normal-strength concrete (NSC) beams is an effective and promising way to increase their stiffness and shear capacity. However, the lack of an accurate analytical model to estimate the shear capacity of UHPC-strengthened beams could be a critical obstacle to its further application. This paper presents a new analytical model for calculating the shear capacity of UHPC-lateral-strengthened beams, which is the first to be based on the simplified modified compression field theory (SMCFT). The model is also distinguished by considering the full compressive and tensile stress–strain curves of UHPC instead of only using their ultimate strengths. By assuming a complete strain transfer at the NSC–UHPC interface and the coincidence of the principal stress and strain axes in the NSC substrate and UHPC layers, the strain compatibility between the two components are included in the shear calculation. The model predictions were validated in two steps, first by using principal strain measurements in the shear span of five beams from digital image correlation (DIC) data to confirm the strain evaluation of the model, and second by reproducing the shear capacities of 12 beams from five experimental campaigns. Results showed a clear agreement between the strains calculated by the analytical model and those measured in experiments. The shear capacities of UHPC-lateral-strengthened beams calculated by the analytical model obtained a very high accuracy and a low variance to replicate experimental results. The model allows evaluation of the contributions of each beam components (NSC substrate, stirrups, and UHPC layers). Results confirmed that the increase in the shear capacity of strengthened beams mainly comes from the high tensile strength of the UHPC and the thickness of the UHPC layer, as well as the improved contribution of the stirrups. Do citizens that live close to the border of another European country feel more European? We suggest that border proximity affects European identity formation, but that the positive effect of border proximity is confined largely to areas where citizens live close to regions with better quality of government and lower levels of corruption. Using our newly collected individual level and post-coded data from the most recent wave of the European Quality of Government survey, covering over 129,000 respondents in all 27 European Union member countries, we show that citizens that live close to the border of another country express a stronger European identity, all things being equal. Yet the effect is driven largely by citizens that live adjacent to regions with relatively higher/lower quality of government compared to their own region. Our study thereby contributes to a closer understanding of where and why citizens become attached to Europe, and if and how benchmarking institutional performance and quality of government affect citizens' willingness to belong to, and identify with, Europe. Our current understanding of HSV latency is based on a variety of clinical observations, and in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro model systems, each with unique advantages and drawbacks. The criteria for authentically modeling HSV latency include the ability to easily manipulate host genetics and biological pathways, as well as mimicking the immune response and viral pathogenesis in human infections. Although realistically modeling HSV latency is necessary when choosing a model, the cost, time requirement, ethical constraints, and reagent availability are also equally important. Presently, there remains a pressing need for in vivo models that more closely recapitulate human HSV infection. While the current in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro models used to study HSV latency have limitations, they provide further insights that add to our understanding of latency. In vivo models have shed light on natural infection routes and the interplay between the host immune response and the virus during latency, while in vitro models have been invaluable in elucidating molecular pathways involved in latency. Under neoliberal social provision, debt has become a primary tool for US households to pursue economic mobility and manage risk. Borrowing supports financial and non‐financial investments that, in theory, should lead to lifetime income and asset gains from which debt can be repaid. Many scholars argue, however, that reliance on credit as a welfare tool significantly increases inequality, particularly along racial lines. In this paper, I examine this process of debt‐financed asset accumulation by analyzing racial disparities in the relationship between household debt and assets. Using Survey of Consumer Finances data, I examine disparities in assets held at given debt levels across Black and White households. Results indicate that at equal debt levels, Black households' assets are between 30% and 80% lower than those of comparable White households. This suggests that White households benefit considerably more from social policies that center borrowing as a mechanism of social provision. This likely contributes to the persistence of the racial wealth gap. Racial disparities in access to credit, to homeownership, and to non‐market financial transfers like inheritances partly explain White households' higher returns, but racial gaps remain even when accounting for these factors. Motivation Genomic variations comprise a spectrum of alterations, ranging from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to large-scale structural variants (SVs), which play crucial roles in bacterial evolution and species diversification. Accurately identifying SNPs and SVs is beneficial for subsequent evolutionary and epidemiological studies. This study presents VariantDetective (VD), a novel, user-friendly, and all-in-one pipeline combining SNP and SV calling to generate consensus genomic variants using multiple tools. Results The VD pipeline accepts various file types as input to initiate SNP and/or SV calling, and benchmarking results demonstrate VD's robustness and high accuracy across multiple tested datasets when compared to existing variant calling approaches. Decreased GABA levels in injury-induced loss of spinal inhibition are still under intense interest and debate. Here, we show that GAD67 haplodeficient mice exhibited a prolonged injury-induced mechanical hypersensitivity in postoperative, inflammatory, and neuropathic pain models. In line with this, we found that loss of 1 copy of the GAD67-encoding gene Gad1 causes a significant decrease in GABA contents in spinal GABAergic neuronal profiles. Consequently, GAD67 haplodeficient males and females were unresponsive to the analgesic effect of diazepam. Remarkably, all these phenotypes were more pronounced in GAD67 haplodeficient females. These mice had significantly much lower amount of spinal GABA content, exhibited an exacerbated pain phenotype during the second phase of the formalin test, developed a longer lasting mechanical hypersensitivity in the chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve model, and were unresponsive to the pain relief effect of the GABA-transaminase inhibitor phenylethylidenehydrazine. Our study provides strong evidence for a role of GABA levels in the modulation of injury-induced mechanical pain and suggests a potential role of the GABAergic system in the prevalence of some painful diseases among females. Shared spaces are urban areas without physical separation between motorised and non-motorised users. Previous research has suggested that it is difficult for users to appropriate these spaces and that the advent of self-driving cars could further complicate interactions. It is therefore important to study the perception of these spaces from the users' perspectives to determine which conditions may promote their acceptance of the vehicles. This study investigates the perceived collision risk of a self-driving car's passenger when pedestrians cross the vehicle's path. The experiment was conducted with a driving simulator. Seven factors were manipulated to vary the dynamics of the crossing situations in order to analyse their influence on the passenger's perception of collision risk. Two measures of perceived risk were obtained. A continuous subjective assessment, reflecting an explicit risk evaluation, was reported in real time by participants. On the other hand, their skin conductance responses, which reflects implicit information processing, were recorded. The relationship between the factors and the risk perception indicators was studied using Bayesian networks. The best Bayesian networks demonstrate that subjective collision risk assessments are primarily influenced by the factors that determine the relative positions of the vehicle and the pedestrian as well as the distance between them when they are in close proximity. The analysis further reveals that variations in skin conductance response indicators are more likely to be explained by variations in subjective assessments than by variations in the manipulated factors. These findings could benefit the development of self-driving navigation among pedestrians by improving understanding of the factors that influence passengers' feelings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) containing buffers are the standard blocking buffer in biosensing, yet human serum is the intended application for most clinical sensors. However, the effect of human serum albumin (HSA) on binding assays remains underexplored. A simple and well-studied assay (human IgG/goat anti-human IgG) was investigated with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor to address this fundamental question in sensing. Calibrations were performed with buffers containing various concentrations of bovine or human serum albumin, as well as full and diluted bovine or IgG-depleted human serum. It was found that HSA or human serum, but not BSA or bovine serum, significantly affected the SPR shift and binding constants of the assay. Interestingly, large differences were also observed depending on whether the animal or human antibody was immobilized on the SPR chip for detection, highlighting that matrix protein/analyte/receptor interactions play a significant role in the response. We find that the interaction of soluble HSA with human IgG interferes with the recognition region, affecting the binding constant, and thus results obtained in BSA are not necessarily applicable to clinical samples or in vivo conditions. We also clearly demonstrate why a minimum dilution of 1 : 10 is often required in SPR assays to remove most background effects. Taken together, these results show that: (1) BSA does not affect the binding constant between antibodies and thus serves its purpose well when only surface blocking is intended, (2) HSA is an adequate surrogate for human serum in assay optimization, and (3) blocking buffers should be prepared with HSA in the optimization steps of assays to be translated to human blood or serum. High corruption perceptions among voters have been shown to have dire consequences for political participation, trust in institutions and ability to solve collective action problems. Research on corruption focussed on macro- and micro-level explanations to explain persistent corruption in developed countries. This article adds a new meso-level variable to the picture: party primaries. While until recently selection of candidates was the privilege of narrow party elites, many Western European parties have introduced primaries to select candidates for public offices. This study posits that this attempt at increasing intraparty democracy has negative consequences regarding corruption perceptions and suggests three mechanisms through which primaries increase corruption perceptions among supporters of parties that use them. First, primaries can be perceived as a means of 'window-dressing', second, primaries can suffer from vote buying, and third, candidates in primaries have incentives to campaign on anti-elitism to distinguish themselves from party elite candidates, increasing corruption salience. The theoretical argument is tested using a novel dataset on primaries in Spanish regions and corruption perceptions in a difference-in-difference design. The results support the hypothesis that primaries increase corruption perceptions among supporters of parties that use them and hint that this result is driven by the process of competitive primaries rather than a restriction of competition. Exceptional mechanical properties of ultra-high performance concretes (UHPC) offer strong strengthening capacities in bending and shear when used as overlay on normal strength concrete (NSC) structures. Nonetheless, lack of simple and intuitive design models for hybrid elements in design guidelines refrain designers from using UHPC overlays for structural applications. Thereby, a simplified sectional analysis model for NSC-UHPC hybrid elements was developed based on the philosophy of the Canadian Bridge Design Code CSA-S6. By using a new average stress distribution for NSC in hybrid elements that considers the strain at the extreme compressed fiber, equilibrium of forces can be solved by a second-degree equation with direct computation. The simplified model provides the complete moment–curvature behavior of hybrid elements for design purposes, thus allowing verifications in service and ultimate state conditions. An empiric equation is also proposed to evaluate the maximum bending capacity of hybrid elements for predesign. It only uses an approximation of a lever arm between forces in the hybrid cross section and thus offers a quick and easy way to evaluate the bending capacity. Both tools were validated on a detailed and iterative sectional analysis program and with results of four international experimental campaigns. The simplified sectional analysis model and empirical equation showed very good accuracy at reproducing the behavior of a wide range of NSC-UHPC hybrid elements configurations. The use of coarse-grained (CG) models is a popular approach to study complex biomolecular systems. By reducing the number of degrees of freedom, a CG model can explore long time- and length-scales inaccessible to computational models at higher resolution. If a CG model is designed by formally integrating out some of the system's degrees of freedom, one expects multi-body interactions to emerge in the effective CG model's energy function. In practice, it has been shown that the inclusion of multi-body terms indeed improves the accuracy of a CG model. However, no general approach has been proposed to systematically construct a CG effective energy that includes arbitrary orders of multi-body terms. In this work, we propose a neural network based approach to address this point and construct a CG model as a multi-body expansion. By applying this approach to a small protein, we evaluate the relative importance of the different multi-body terms in the definition of an accurate model. We observe a slow convergence in the multi-body expansion, where up to five-body interactions are needed to reproduce the free energy of an atomistic model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coarse graining enables the investigation of molecular dynamics for larger systems and at longer timescales than is possible at an atomic resolution. However, a coarse graining model must be formulated such that the conclusions we draw from it are consistent with the conclusions we would draw from a model at a finer level of detail. It has been proved that a force matching scheme defines a thermodynamically consistent coarse-grained model for an atomistic system in the variational limit. Wang et al. [ACS Cent. Sci. 5, 755 (2019)] demonstrated that the existence of such a variational limit enables the use of a supervised machine learning framework to generate a coarse-grained force field, which can then be used for simulation in the coarse-grained space. Their framework, however, requires the manual input of molecular features to machine learn the force field. In the present contribution, we build upon the advance of Wang et al. and introduce a hybrid architecture for the machine learning of coarse-grained force fields that learn their own features via a subnetwork that leverages continuous filter convolutions on a graph neural network architecture. We demonstrate that this framework succeeds at reproducing the thermodynamics for small biomolecular systems. Since the learned molecular representations are inherently transferable, the architecture presented here sets the stage for the development of machine-learned, coarse-grained force fields that are transferable across molecular systems. This paper investigates the shear behavior of unidirectional hybrid slabs made of a normal-strength concrete (NSC) substrate and an ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) overlay on the tensile side. The impacts of two important aspects on the shear behavior were studied. First, various strengthening configurations (thickness, with or without NSC substitution, with existing and/or new rebars) were investigated, specifically two configurations scarcely studied in the scientific literature. Second, the state of damage of the NSC slab prior to the overlay application was examined for the first time. The hybrid slabs tested behaved monolithically until the establishment of a composite mechanical action occurring at up to 1.66 times the reference shear resistance. The composite mechanical action offered structural hardening with significant increase of shear resistance up to 2.50 times the reference shear resistance. Strain distribution and reorganization was monitored on the slabs using digital image correlation technology, and showed creation of a strut and tie system in four successive steps. Both the UHPC thickness and the total area of longitudinal rebar had a significant impact on the ultimate shear resistance. The effect of the load history on the ultimate shear resistance was limited, and partly masked by the combined effect of the type of NSC-UHPC interface and the overlay configuration influencing the crack pattern. Why have some territories performed better than others in the fight against COVID‐19? This paper uses a novel dataset on excess mortality, trust and political polarization for 165 European regions to explore the role of social and political divisions in the remarkable regional differences in excess mortality during the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic. First, we investigate whether regions characterized by a low social and political trust witnessed a higher excess mortality. Second, we argue that it is not only levels, but also polarization in trust among citizens – in particular, between government supporters and non‐supporters – that matters for understanding why people in some regions have adopted more pro‐healthy behaviour. Third, we explore the partisan make‐up of regional parliaments and the relationship between political division – or what we refer to as 'uncooperative politics'. We hypothesize that the ideological positioning – in particular those that lean more populist – and ideological polarization among political parties is also linked to higher mortality. Accounting for a host of potential confounders, we find robust support that regions with lower levels of both social and political trust are associated with higher excess mortality, along with citizen polarization in institutional trust in some models. On the ideological make‐up of regional parliaments, we find that, ceteris paribus, those that lean more 'tan' on the 'GAL‐TAN' spectrum yielded higher excess mortality. Moreover, although we find limited evidence of elite polarization driving excess deaths on the left‐right or GAL‐TAN spectrums, partisan differences on the attitudes towards the European Union demonstrated significantly higher deaths, which we argue proxies for (anti)populism. Overall, we find that both lower citizen‐level trust and populist elite‐level ideological characteristics of regional parliaments are associated with higher excess mortality in European regions during the first wave of the pandemic. The literature pertaining to community-based hospice wellness centres, especially concerning program evaluation, is sparse. This article describes the development and implementation of a mixed-method, rapid needs assessment for a nonprofit community-based hospice wellness centre in Ontario, Canada. As part of the needs assessment, a survey and focus groups were performed to elicit responses from service users. Individuals registered for services and wellness centre attendees were asked about their needs, opinions, and preferences to help guide future program and service options. Findings and recommendations are presented for programming and service options, and implications for future program evaluation projects are discussed. The methodology of this time and cost-efficient evaluation provides insights that can be utilized by other hospice wellness centres facing similar challenges of time, money, and program evaluation expertise constraints. What are the sources of public support for international aid in times of crises? This paper investigates the determinants of public support for the EU Covid-19 aid package ('NextGenerationEU', NGEU), the largest aid package in EU history. Using what is to the best of our knowledge the first EU-wide study of public opinion on the Covid-19 rescue package, we first establish that public support for within-EU redistribution is influenced by long-standing factors such as ideology and citizen identities, corroborating previous literature. Next, our vignette survey experiment shows that short-term shifts in support for the rescue package are driven mostly by elite endorsement cues rather than information about the precise terms of aid or amount. We also find that the role of elite endorsement cues varies across different subsets of the population depending on their level of political sophistication, national level attachment and country context. Conversely, the effects of policy details about the aid package are more mixed. Thus, in the face of multidimensional decision-making in times of crises, national institutions are a key catalyst of moving short-term support for policies of international solidarity. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is being increasingly used as a thin overlay for deficient normal strength concrete (NSC) structural elements. Compared to reinforced NSC elements, hybrid NSC-UHPC elements have two stages' structural behaviour under high shear load before failure: monolithic action followed by a composite mechanical action. The composite mechanical action gives to hybrid elements a structural hardening capability after the occurrence of a diagonal shear crack and is not yet considered by most design standards. Two analytical models for hybrid elements under shear load are thus proposed to predict the shear resistance V R of the monolithic action and to predict the structural hardening resistance V Rsh of the composite mechanical action. The shear resistance model integrates the UHPC contribution in the estimation of the tensile strain at mid-height cross-section according to the general method of the Canadian code. The structural hardening behaviour is reproduced with a strut-and-tie system with plastic hinges, where the failure is controlled by the crushing of a concrete strut. How does electoral competition shape parties' use of clientelist strategies during elections? In this article, we present a theoretical framework which suggests that in contexts where electoral clientelism is present but not ubiquitous, clientelist strategies take a distinctive form by being more considered and rationally targeted at individuals and areas that maximize the value of the transaction for the clientelist party. Using individual-level survey data collected in the aftermath of the South African municipal elections of 2016, we find considerable evidence to suggest that electoral competition moderates the relationship between several individual and municipal level variables and individuals' exposure to clientelist campaigns. Our results also demonstrate how the subtleties of targeting strategies differ between dominant and opposition parties depending on the level of competitiveness. Databases constitute key research tools in sanctions scholarship. Over the past few years, we have witnessed a proliferation of sanctions databases: while only a single dataset was available until 2009, this number had increased to five by 2020; thus, the choice has more than doubled in less than a decade. This essay assesses the evolution observed. It reviews the five major datasets, comparing some of their basic choices, and evaluates them along two dimensions: the extent to which they capture targeted sanctions and the degree to which they brought innovations to the subfield. We find that targeted sanctions are not adequately reflected in databases, which remain state-centric in their approach. We conclude that the crafting of new databases does not entail an incremental refinement in which each iteration renders its predecessors obsolete. Rather, the evolution observed has resulted in a diverse set of options with different emphases. We nevertheless observe that a trend toward innovation has yielded to one toward consolidation, more focused on enlarging the empirical testing ground than in innovating. Introduction: Oral sotalol initiation requires a multiple‐day, inpatient admission to monitor for QT prolongation during loading. A 1‐day intravenous (IV) sotalol loading protocol was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in March 2020, but limited data on clinical use and administration currently exists. This study describes implementation of an IV sotalol protocol within an integrated health system, provides initial efficacy and safety outcomes, and examines length of stay (LOS) compared with oral sotalol initiation. Methods: IV sotalol was administered according to a prespecified initiation protocol to adult patients with refractory atrial or ventricular arrhythmias. Baseline characteristics, safety and feasibility outcomes, and LOS were compared with patients receiving oral sotalol over a similar time period. Results: From January 2021 to June 2022, a total of 29 patients (average age 66.0 ± 8.6 years, 27.6% women) underwent IV sotalol load and 20 patients (average age 60.4 ± 13.9 years, 65.0% women) underwent oral sotalol load. The load was successfully completed in 22/29 (75.9%) patients receiving IV sotalol and 20/20 (100%) of patients receiving oral sotalol, although 7/20 of the oral sotalol patients (35.0%) required dose reduction. Adverse events interrupting IV sotalol infusion included bradycardia (seven patients, 24.1%) and QT prolongation (three patients, 10.3%). No patients receiving IV or oral sotalol developed sustained ventricular arrhythmias before discharge. LOS for patients completing IV load was 2.6 days shorter (mean 1.0 vs. 3.6, p <.001) compared with LOS with oral load. A leading cancer diagnosis in women worldwide is cervical cancer, with current treatments all posing a risk of serious side effects. Less toxic, but effective treatments are sought after. Aloe vera (barbadensis miller), known for its beneficial properties, has been studied for cancer treatment. While aloe gel has been shown to exhibit anti-cancer activity, it cannot form a hydrogel alone. Therefore, an interpenetrating network comprising alginate blended with aloe was examined as a cervical cancer treatment. We hypothesized the antioxidant properties of aloe gel would decrease cancer cell viability while the alginate hydrogel would improve mucoadhesion. We further hypothesized the antioxidant activity of aloe gel would induce cancer cell death at levels similar to common chemotherapeutics, and aimed to determine if these chemotherapeutic behaviors are constructive or destructive. Material and adhesive properties, drug encapsulation, and cancer cell viability were investigated and validated. The effect of aloe-alginate hydrogels on cervical cancer cell viability was not significantly different compared to aloe-blends containing doxorubicin (DOX), indicating that the aloe alone decreased cancer cell viability rendering the additional cytotoxic therapeutic not impactful as an adjuvant therapy. This article presents a reassessment of Anne of Świdnica (1339–62), Holy Roman Empress and queen of Bohemia, based on a reading of Petrarch's De laudibus feminarum. By reinterpreting their correspondence as an act of gift-giving within a framework of court patronage, it makes a case for her calculated effort to benefit her public image by corresponding with Petrarch, while he, in turn, benefited by representing himself as an intimate of the imperial family. It also situates his letter within the context of the ongoing political exchanges between Petrarch and the Prague court, and suggests that he sought to harness Anne's influence for his political agenda. Fusarium graminearum is the causal agent of Fusarium Head Blight, a serious disease affecting grain crops worldwide. Biological control involves the use of microorganisms to combat plant pathogens such as F. graminearum. Strains of Bacillus velezensis are common biological control candidates for use against F. graminearum and other plant pathogens, as they can secrete antifungal secondary metabolites. Here we study the interaction between B. velezensis E68 and F. graminearum DAOMC 180378 by employing a dual RNA-seq approach to assess the transcriptional changes in both organisms. In dual culture, B. velezensis up-regulated genes related to sporulation and phosphate stress and down-regulated genes related to secondary metabolism, biofilm formation and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. F. graminearum up-regulated genes encoding for killer protein 4-like proteins and genes relating to heavy metal tolerance, and down-regulated genes relating to trichothecene biosynthesis and phenol metabolism. We define the mod P -synchronization problem as a weakening of the firing squad problem, where all nodes fire not at the same round, but at rounds that are all equal modulo P. We introduce an algorithm that achieves mod P -synchronization despite asynchronous starts in every dynamic network whose dynamic radius is bounded by some integer Δ, that is, there always exists a temporal path of length at most Δ from some fixed node γ , called a central node of the network, to all the other nodes. As opposed to the perfect synchronization achieved in the firing squad problem, mod P -synchronization thus does not require the network to be strongly connected. In our algorithm, nodes know Δ, but they ignore which nodes are central in the network. We also prove that if the bound Δ on the radius exists but is unknown, then mod P -synchronization is impossible. All nodes in our algorithm fire in less that 6 P n rounds, where n is the number of nodes, after all nodes become active, but use unbounded counters. We then present a refinement of this algorithm so that memory usage becomes bounded while maintaining the same time complexity. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) influence plant health. However, the genotypic variations in host organisms affect their response to PGPR. To understand the genotypic effect, we screened four diverse B. distachyon genotypes at varying growth stages for their ability to be colonized by B. velezensis strain B26. We reasoned that B26 may have an impact on the phenological growth stages of B. distachyon genotypes. Phenotypic data suggested the role of B26 in increasing the number of awns and root weight in wild type genotypes and overexpressing transgenic lines. Thus, we characterized the expression patterns of flowering pathway genes in inoculated plants and found that strain B26 modulates the transcript abundance of flowering genes. An increased root volume of inoculated plants was estimated by CT-scanning which suggests the role of B26 in altering the root architecture. B26 also modulated plant hormone homeostasis. A differential response was observed in the transcript abundance of auxin and gibberellins biosynthesis genes in inoculated roots. Our results reveal that B. distachyon plant genotype is an essential determinant of whether a PGPR provides benefit or harm to the host and shed new insight into the involvement of B. velezensis in the expression of flowering genes. Chronic cocaine use leads to adaptations in stress biology and in neuroactive steroid system. These adaptations are associated with high cocaine craving and increased relapse risk. This study tested whether potentiation of the neuroactive steroid system with the precursor pregnenolone (PREG) affects stress- and cue-induced cocaine craving, anxiety and autonomic response in individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD). Thirty treatment-seeking individuals (21 Male, 9 Female) with CUD were randomized to placebo (PBO) or supraphysiologic PREG doses of 300 mg or 500 mg per day for 8 weeks. After 2 weeks of treatment, participants were exposed to 5-min personalized guided imagery provocation of stress, cocaine, or neutral/relaxing cues in a 3-day experiment, one condition per day on separate days, in a random, counterbalanced order. Repeated assessment of cocaine craving, anxiety, heart rate (HR), systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were assessed on each day. PREG significantly increased pregnenolone levels compared to PBO. Both PREG doses decreased stress- and cocaine cue-induced craving and reduced both stress- and cue-induced anxiety only in the 500 mg/day group. The 500 mg/day PREG group also displayed decreased stress-induced HR, SBP and DBP. Bioethics experts played a key role in ensuring a coherent ethical response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the fields of healthcare, public health, and scientific research in Canada. In the province of Quebec, a group of academic and practicing bioethicists met periodically in the early months of the pandemic to discuss approaches and solutions to ethical dilemmas encountered during the crisis. These meetings created the opportunity for a national survey of bioethics practitioners from different fields. The survey, in which forty-five Canadian bioethics practitioners (clinical ethicists, ethicist members of REBs and government health policy ethicists, or any bioethicist practicing outside of academia) participated, explored their concerns, challenges and opportunities during the first wave of the pandemic, with the objective of informing bioethics research about the difficulties experienced by bioethicists "in the field". Participants reported increased stress levels, increased workloads, and a greater proportion of their work being devoted to public health ethics. Most of their concerns focused on groups other than themselves, such as health professionals, patients, research participants, and people in vulnerable socio-economic situations. Kauaʻi, an island within the Hawaiʻi archipelago, is home of a unique flora that contains 250 single-island endemic plant species. Threats have led to a significant population decrease where 97% of these plant species are now listed as endangered, critically endangered, or extinct. Vertical cliff habitats on Kauaʻi work as refugia to protect plants from their stressors. However, this habitat makes conservation work particularly difficult, forcing scientists, and botanists to use risky and time-consuming methods such as abseiling to access remote plant populations. Here we present the Mamba, the first aerial system capable of sampling plants on cliffs. This system is operated by two pilots and consists of an actively controlled platform suspended by a long cable under a lifting drone. Eleven otherwise inaccessible samples from five critically endangered species were collected during the first field trials on Kauaʻi Island. The samples are currently surviving in nurseries, demonstrating that the Mamba can be used to complete the conservation life cycle for organisms located in difficult areas, from location to collection, then cultivation and outplanting. Adolescence is a critical period for developing a sense of identity, an iterative process that relies on the development of skills such as self-reflection and self-appraisal. Outcomes of identity development include personal ethics, knowledge of one's strengths and challenges, and, ultimately, independence. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects these outcomes in adults, when identity has been established and may need to be redefined; but what happens when an injury occurs while identity is being formed? To answer this question, we used mapping review methodology to explore TBI effects on adolescent identity formation, mapping the evidence onto a biopsychosocial framework for rehabilitation. We reviewed studies on identity in adolescents with mild to severe TBI ages 13–18 years, published from inception to 2021, with a focus on outpatient rehabilitation settings. Key findings of the mapping review noted adolescents post-TBI are likely to: (1) question their identity considering dissonance between the current self and their pre-injury self; and (2) seek to establish new, adaptive meanings and identities. All studies drew conclusions regarding identity and participation of adolescents post-TBI. Results provided insight into the importance of considering individualized rehabilitation interventions for adolescents, given their unique developmental path towards identity formation. Introduction: The ultimate cause of neuronal death in Huntington's disease (HD) is still uncertain. Apart from impairment in systems handling abnormal proteins, other mechanisms might contribute to neurodegeneration and progression of HD. Decreased cerebral blood flow (CBF) has been described in other neurodegenerative disorders and may play a role in HD.Objectives: To investigate CBF changes in HD gene carriers.Methods: A group of 39 HD gene carriers (18 premanifest and 21 manifest HD) and 16 controls underwent a comprehensive clinical evaluation and a brain magnetic resonance imaging protocol that included pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling to quantify CBF. Regions of interest (ROI) analyses were performed to compare CBF in controls vs premanifest HD vs manifest HD. Correlation analyses were performed to ascertain the relationship between CBF and clinical and biomarkers data.Results: We found a decrease in CBF in bilateral caudate and putamen of patients with manifest HD in comparison with controls. CBF of premanifest HD carriers in the same ROIs was midway between controls and the HD patients, with differences not reaching statistical significance. Lower CBF in caudate and putamen was associated with worse motor symptoms, functionality, and cognitive performance. CBF was also associated with markers of neurodegeneration: higher CBF in caudate and putamen significantly correlated to higher volumes in the same ROI and to lower levels of neurofilament light chain.Conclusion: As CBF changes in caudate and putamen nuclei were associated with markers of neurodegeneration and with clinical outcomes, decreased CBF and oxygen supply could emerge as a relevant mechanism contributing to degeneration in HD. A series of thermally shrinkable polymer surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates were prepared with bimetallic Au and Ag (oxidized or not) films and with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) located at different places in the layered structure to evaluate the synergistic effect of different known SERS amplification methods to enhance the Raman signal for low concentration dopamine detection. A bimetallic Au and Ag layered structure improved the Raman signal by 5 and 2 times compared to the single-layered Au and Ag films. Oxidizing the Ag layer prior to deposition of Au further improved the signal by a factor of 2, while adding AuNP on wrinkled films increased another 10 times the intensity of the Raman signal. It was found that the enhancement was another 10 times stronger when using AuNPs in combination with other means of enhancement such as with a silver underlayer or surface wrinkling. Wrinkling alone only gave a few-fold increase compared to a flat film, but the combination of wrinkling with AuNPs and a silver underlayer improved the SERS intensity by more than 3 orders of magnitude, showing the synergistic effect of these enhancement methods. The optimized sensors were then tested in dynamic SERS with low concentration dopamine solutions, where the signal showed characteristics of a digital SERS response. Raman spectra preprocessing and sorting software was developed to triage the SERS-active spectra from the null spectra, to count the detection events such as the ones observed in single molecule experiments. New Horizons is an annual training exercise designated for military medical professionals and civil engineers to assist partner nations of Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), as well as provide exceptional training to U.S. military members.1 In Spring of 2019, a gynecologic surgery readiness training exercise (SURGRETE) team composed of 16 joint-service military healthcare professionals, specifically including a fellowship-trained female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) surgeon, an FPMRS fellow, an obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) specialist, three OB/GYN residents, and additional anesthesia, nursing, and surgical technician support, traveled to Guyana to participate in the New Horizons global health exercise. The mission of the SURGRETE team was to perform patient evaluations, surgeries, and postoperative care at Linden Mackenzie Hospital in Upper Demerara-Berbice, Region 10, Guyana, from May 21 to June 8, 2019. This study examined the mental health of mothers, assessing the impact of the perceived availability of partner for social support on mothers' symptoms of depression, anxiety, and parental burnout. 315 French-speaking mothers over the age of 18, with at least one child living regularly at home, completed an online set of questionnaires in a cross-sectional study. The mothers responded to the Maslach Burnout Inventory adapted to the parental context (MBI-Parental), the Social Support Questionnaire-6 (SSQ-6), and the Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS). ANOVA and ANCOVA revealed a significant association of perceived availability and satisfaction with the partner's social support on the mothers' psychological state. Single mothers reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion than mothers with a partner who was perceived as unavailable or moderately available. Mothers with a partner perceived as very available showed fewer symptoms of parental burnout, anxiety, and depression than mothers whose partner was perceived as moderately available. Perceived partner support has a significant statistical impact on mothers' mental health and may be a protective factor against parental burnout, depression, and anxiety. Global rates of depression have increased significantly since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unclear how the recent shift of many mental health services to virtual platforms has impacted service users, especially for the male population which are significantly more likely to complete suicide than women. This paper presents the findings of a rapid meta-analytic research synthesis of 17 randomized controlled trials on the relative efficacy of virtual versus traditional face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in mitigating symptoms of depression. Participants' aggregated depression scores were compared upon completion of the therapy (posttest) and longest follow-up measurement. The results supported the noninferiority hypothesis indicating that the two modes of CBT delivery are equally efficacious, but the results proved to be significantly heterogeneous indicating the presence of moderating effects. Indirect suggestive evidence was found to support moderation by gender; that is, depressed males may benefit more from virtual CBT. Perhaps, this field's most telling descriptive finding was that boys/men have been grossly underrepresented in its trials. Future trials ought to oversample those who have been at this field's margins to advance the next generation of knowledge, allowing us to best serve people of all genders, those who live in poverty, Indigenous, Black, and other Peoples of Colour, as well as any others at risk of being marginalized or oppressed in contemporary mental health care systems. Individuals with intersex variations fall outside the normative sex binary of male and female for various reasons. These individuals are highly stigmatized and discriminated against in the legal, medical and social spheres. In this paper, we analyze manifestations of such discrimination in the healthcare context and hypothesize that Patient Centred Care (PCC) and Shared Decision Making (SDM) approaches are improperly practiced with intersex individuals. Through a narrative review of current literature, we present evidence of improper practice of PCC and SDM and its effects on intersex individuals and, in the pediatric context, their parents. Misinformation by medical practitioners to parents of intersex individuals promotes the perpetuation of unnecessary surgical interventions. We propose strategies to improve intersex medical care, including better adherence to SDM and PCC guidelines as well as the sociocultural normalisation of intersex identity. Current perceptions of surgical interventions done on intersex infants and children need to better align with evidence-based physical and psychological health risks. All these strategies are part of preserving the autonomy and physical integrity of intersex individuals and ensuring that their well-being remains at the heart of their care in the medical context. Purpose: Cetirizine is a less sedative alternative to diphenhydramine for the prevention of infusion-related reactions (IRR) to paclitaxel. However, its use remains controversial. In this study, we assessed feasibility for a future definitive non-inferiority trial comparing cetirizine to diphenhydramine as premedication to prevent paclitaxel-related IRR. Methods: This was a single-center randomized prospective feasibility study. Participants were paclitaxel-naive cancer patients scheduled to start paclitaxel chemotherapy. They were randomly assigned to receive either intravenous diphenhydramine 50 mg + oral placebo (control) or intravenous placebo + oral cetirizine 10 mg (intervention) for their first two paclitaxel treatments. The percentage of eligible patients completing a first paclitaxel treatment and the recruitment rate were assessed (feasibility outcomes). Drowsiness was measured at baseline and at selected time points using the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) (safety outcome). IRR events were also documented (efficacy outcome). Results: Among 37 eligible patients, 27 were recruited and randomized (control 13; intervention 14) and 25 completed the study. The recruitment rate was 4.8 participants/month, meeting the primary feasibility target. Drowsiness was the main adverse effect associated with the premedication. The increase in drowsiness compared to baseline (ΔSSS) was greater in the diphenhydramine group compared to the cetirizine group (median ΔSSS 2 (IQR 3.25) vs median ΔSSS 0 (IQR 1), p < 0.01) when measured one hour after the premedication administration. One participant had an IRR and no unexpected serious adverse event occurred. Conclusion: The trial methods were feasible in terms of recruitment, retention, and safety. Cetirizine was significantly less sedating than diphenhydramine. IRR were infrequent and a larger trial is warranted to confirm non-inferiority for IRR prevention. We explored provider perspectives on the barriers to CAU for women with SUDs. As a secondary objective, we highlighted provider contraceptive counseling strategies to address patient CAU barriers. We conducted 24 qualitative interviews with a purposeful sample of women's health providers, including medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and certified nurse-midwives. We used thematic analysis to code the interviews with inductive codes and organized findings according to levels of influence within the Dahlgren and Whitehead rainbow model, a socioecological model of health. Provider-reported barriers to CAU were identified at four levels of socioecological influence and included reproductive misconceptions; active substance use; trauma, interpersonal violence, and reproductive coercion; limited social support; lack of housing, employment, health insurance, and transportation; stigma; discrimination; and punitive prenatal substance use policies and child welfare reporting requirements. Strategies for addressing CAU barriers mainly focused on patient-centered communication, including open information exchange, shared decision-making, and relationship building. However, providers described disproportionately highlighting the benefits of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and directing conversations toward LARC when they perceived that such methods would help patients to overcome adherence and other challenges related to active substance use or logistical barriers. Notably, there was no mention of CAU facilitators during the interviews. Providers perceived that women with SUDs experience a range of CAU barriers, which they addressed within the clinical setting through use of both patient-centered communication and highlighting the benefits of LARC when they perceived that such methods would help clients to overcome barriers. Improving CAU for women with SUDs will require multidisciplinary, multipronged strategies that prioritize reproductive autonomy and are implemented across clinical, community, and policy settings. Studies of indigenous place attachments tend to focus on the alternative environmental ontologies that animate and inform indigenous peoples' relationships with place, but rarely engage with the material and psychological impacts of colonialist practices—namely, displacement and dispossession of land. Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 triggered the internal displacement of tens of thousands of Crimeans to mainland Ukraine, including ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, and indigenous Crimean Tatars. This multiethnic flow of internally displaced peoples (IDPs) affords the opportunity to contrast the post-displacement attachments of both indigenous and nonindigenous peoples to the same place. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this paper argues that Slavs' attachments to Crimea are principally individualistic and rooted in a reverence for the peninsula's natural environment, while Crimean Tatars possess an intergenerational narrative of national belonging to Crimea informed by cyclical patterns and experiences of colonialist displacement from their homeland. Cryopreserved cellular products, as parts of hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplants, mononuclear cell reinjections for donor lymphocyte infusion or extracorporeal photopheresis, can be washed before being reinjected into the patient or infused directly, depending on local practices. The aim of washing is to reduce the incidence and severity of adverse reactions (ARs) due to the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) used as a cryoprotective agent and other factors, such as dead cell debris. At the authors' cell therapy laboratory (CTL) in Poitiers, France, as in 76% of Etablissement Français du Sang (EFS) CTLs, all cryopreserved products undergo thawing in a water bath followed by washing with the COBE 2991. As this device will soon cease to be available, an alternative process needs to be assessed. The authors compared two closed systems: the authors' semi-automatic system using the traditional centrifugation method (COBE 2991) and an automated device using spinning membrane filtration (Lovo). A total of 72 HPC bags available for research were used. The authors first performed a paired comparison, processing one or two HPC bags washed by each device. A second study was carried out to compare two different washing solutions generally used by EFS CTLs along with variable storage conditions. Finally, the authors studied the efficiency of the Lovo with three or four thawed bags. The main parameters studied were viable CD34+ cell recovery and viability, CD3+ cell recovery, stability up to 6 h after washing, DMSO elimination and center feasibility. The Lovo device showed better CD34+ cell recovery compared with the COBE 2991 while maintaining CD34+ viability and stability over 6 h. Moreover, Lovo efficiency seemed to be independent of the number of thawed bags processed and washing solution used in the authors' study. CD3+ cell recovery met the authors' internal specifications (cell recovery >50%), with similar results seen when processing with either the COBE 2991 or Lovo. Additionally, on average, 97% of DMSO was removed after washing with Lovo, minimizing the risk of ARs. The storage conditions post-processing indicated preferred storage conditions of 7 ± 3°C. Finally, if processing time seemed shorter using COBE 2991 for one bag washed, the Lovo device required only one staff member regardless of the number of HPC bags processed. The Lovo device seems to provide an opportunity to standardize HPC processing, ensuring patient safety, with, on average, 97% of DMSO removed, while improving recovery of cells of interest and maintaining viability over time in case of delayed transplant.
