The dynamics of (few) electrons dissolved in an ionic fluid—as when a small amount of metal is added to a solution while upholding its electronic insulation—manifests interesting properties that can be ascribed to nontrivial topological features of particle transport (e.g., Thouless' pumps). In the adiabatic regime, the charge distribution and the dynamics of these dissolved electrons are uniquely determined by the nuclear configuration. Yet, their localization into effective potential wells and their diffusivity are dictated by how the self-interaction is modeled. In this article, we investigate the role of self-interaction in the description of the localization and transport properties of dissolved electrons in non-stoichiometric molten salts. Although the account for the exact (Fock) exchange strongly localizes the dissolved electrons, decreasing their tunneling probability and diffusivity, we show that the dynamics of the ions and of the dissolved electrons are largely uncorrelated, irrespective of the degree to which the electron self-interaction is treated and in accordance with topological arguments. Understanding the dynamics of physiological changes involved in the acclimation responses of plants after their exposure to repeated cycles of water stress is crucial to selecting resilient genotypes for regions with recurrent drought episodes. Under such background, we tried to respond to questions as: (1) Are there differences in the stomatal-related and non-stomatal responses during water stress cycles in different clones of Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner? (2) Do these C. canephora clones show a different response in each of the two sequential water stress events? (3) Is one previous drought stress event sufficient to induce a kind of "memory" in C. canephora? Seven-month-old plants of two clones ('3V' and 'A1', previously characterized as deeper and lesser deep root growth, respectively) were maintained well-watered (WW) or fully withholding the irrigation, inducing soil water stress (WS) until the soil matric water potential (Ψmsoil) reached ≅ −0.5 MPa (−500 kPa) at a soil depth of 500 mm. Two sequential drought events (drought-1 and drought-2) attained this Ψmsoil after 19 days and were followed by soil rewatering until a complete recovery of leaf net CO2 assimilation rate (Anet) during the recovery-1 and recovery-2 events. The leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and leaf reflectance parameters were measured in six-day frequency, while the leaf anatomy was examined only at the end of the second drought cycle. In both drought events, the WS plants showed reduction in stomatal conductance and leaf transpiration. The reduction in internal CO2 diffusion was observed in the second drought cycle, expressed by increased thickness of spongy parenchyma in both clones. Those stomatal and anatomical traits impacted decreasing the Anet in both drought events. The '3V' was less influenced by water stress than the 'A1' genotype in Anet, effective quantum yield in PSII photochemistry, photochemical quenching, linear electron transport rate, and photochemical reflectance index during the drought-1, but during the drought-2 event such an advantage disappeared. Such physiological genotype differences were supported by the medium xylem vessel area diminished only in '3V' under WS. In both drought cycles, the recovery of all observed stomatal and non-stomatal responses was usually complete after 12 days of rewatering. The absence of photochemical impacts, namely in the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemical reactions, photosynthetic performance index, and density of reaction centers capable of QA reduction during the drought-2 event, might result from an acclimation response of the clones to WS. Our society largely relies on inorganic semiconductor devices which are, so far, fabricated using expensive and complex processes requiring ultra‐high vacuum equipment. Here we report on the possibility of growing a p–n junction taking advantage of electrochemical processes based on the use of aqueous solutions. The growth of the junction has been carried out using the Electrochemical Atomic Layer Deposition (E‐ALD) technique, which allowed to sequentially deposit two different semiconductors, CdS and Cu2S, on an Ag(111) substrate, in a single procedure. The growth process was monitored in situ by Surface X‐Ray Diffraction (SXRD) and resulted in the fabrication of a thin double‐layer structure with a high degree of crystallographic order and a well‐defined interface. Understanding the depositional processes on the inner shelf of Antarctica is a significant challenge. This difficulty arises from the heterogeneity of sediment sources, their poor preservation potential due to the advance and retreat cycles of ice bodies, and the impact of relatively strong bottom currents generated by high density contrasts in the water column. These factors contribute to the overall complexity of the glacio-influenced marine environment, particularly below present-day floating ice shelves in correspondence of areas draped in sediments related to Late Pleistocene-Holocene glacial variations. These locations provide crucial information for reconstructing past glacial dynamics driven by global changes. In this study, we present an analysis of glaciomarine deposits collected from the Western Ross Sea, offshore Mario Zucchelli Station, in a protected indentation of the Victoria Land Coast that hosts the Terra Nova Bay polynya. We conducted multi-proxy analyses on three sediment cores sampled from selected seafloor morphological units associated with fluctuations of the grounded ice, which preserve sedimentary facies representative of this distinctive depositional environment. We identified and described six depositional facies, characterized by diagnostic sedimentological, textural and geochemical patterns. Direct observations were integrated with high-resolution geophysical data and geomorphological seafloor analysis. Our findings highlight a Late Pleistocene-Holocene depositional sequence linked to fluctuations in grounded ice, with unconformities and sedimentary patterns potentially related to climatic variations driving ice advances and retreats. Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) may have a heterogeneous response to medical/surgical treatments based on endotypes. Data correlating biomarkers and severity of the disease are lacking. We aimed to determine if IL‐5 and calprotectin may be useful in defining severity of disease and identifying uncontrolled patients. Methods: This was a case–control study including 81 patients with diffuse CRSwNP who underwent at least one previous surgery and treated with intranasal steroids. We enrolled 39 uncontrolled patients (SNOT‐22 ≥ 40 and two or more cycles of systemic corticosteroids in last year) (Group A) and 42 controlled one (SNOT‐22 < 40 and less than two cycles of systemic corticosteroids in last year) (Group B). We analyzed IL‐5 and calprotectin in both nasal secretions and nasal polyp tissue. Results: Calprotectin and IL‐5 were significantly higher in Group A in both secretions and tissue, and the higher the number of previous surgeries, the higher the levels detected in nasal secretions. At univariate analyses, smoking, asthma, non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs‐exacerbated respiratory disease (NSAID‐ERD), blood eosinophilia, neutrophils, and eosinophils at nasal cytology were significantly associated with uncontrolled disease. Multivariate analyses showed that asthma, NSAID‐ERD, and IL‐5 in nasal secretion/polyp tissue were significantly related to the risk of uncontrolled disease. Conclusions: Our data suggest that asthma, NSAID‐ERD, and IL‐5 in nasal secretions/tissue may be helpful to identify more severe patients, as they are related to the risk of uncontrolled disease. Background: Chest pain is a prevalent reason for emergency room referrals and presents diagnostic challenges. The physician must carefully differentiate between cardiac and noncardiac causes, including various vascular and extracardiovascular conditions. However, it is crucial not to overlook serious conditions such as acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and early discharge management become difficult when traditional clinical criteria, ECG, and troponin values are insufficient. Recently, the focus has shifted to a "multi-marker" approach to improve diagnostic accuracy and prognosis in patients with chest pain. Methods: This observational, prospective, single-center study involved, with informed consent, 360 patients presenting to the emergency department with typical chest pain and included a control group of 120 healthy subjects. In addition to routine examinations, including tests for hsTnI (Siemens TNIH kit), according to the 0–1 h algorithm, biochemical markers sST2 (tumorigenicity suppression-2) and suPAR (soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor) were also evaluated for each patient. A 12-month follow-up was conducted to monitor outcomes and adverse events. Results: We identified two groups of patients: a positive one (112 patients) with high levels of hsTnI, sST2 > 24.19 ng/mL, and suPAR > 2.9 ng/mL, diagnosed with ACS; and a negative one (136 patients) with low levels of hsTnI, suPAR < 2.9 ng/mL, and sST2 < 24.19 ng/mL. During the 12-month follow-up, no adverse events were observed in the negative group. In the intermediate group, patients with hsTnI between 6 ng/L and the ischemic limit, sST2 > 29.1 ng/mL and suPAR > 2.9 ng/mL, showed the highest probability of adverse events during follow-up, while those with sST2 < 24.19 ng/mL and suPAR < 2.9 ng/mL had a better outcome with no adverse events at 12 months. Conclusion: Our data suggest that sST2 and suPAR, together with hsTnI, may be useful in the prognosis of cardiovascular patients with ACS, providing additional information on endothelial damage. These biomarkers could guide the clinical decision on further diagnostic investigations. In addition, suPAR and sST2 emerge as promising for event prediction in patients with chest pain. Paired associative stimulation (PAS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique combining transcranial magnetic stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation. PAS allows connections between cortical areas and peripheral nerves (C/P PAS) or between cortical regions (C/C PAS) to be strengthened or weakened by spike-timing-dependent neural plasticity mechanisms. Since PAS modulates both neurophysiological features and motor performance, there is growing interest in its application in neurorehabilitation. We aimed to synthesize evidence on the motor rehabilitation role of PAS in stroke patients. We performed a literature search following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Framework. Eight studies were included: one investigated C/C PAS between the cerebellum and the affected primary motor area (M1), seven applied C/P PAS over the lesional, contralesional, or both M1. Seven studies evaluated the outcome on upper limb and one on lower limb motor recovery. Although several studies omit crucial methodological details, PAS highlighted effects mainly on corticospinal excitability, and, more rarely, an improvement in motor performance. However, most studies failed to prove a correlation between neurophysiological changes and motor improvement. Although current studies seem to suggest a role of PAS in post-stroke rehabilitation, their heterogeneity and limited number do not yet allow definitive conclusions to be drawn. Numerical simulation is an important method for verifying the quantum circuits used to simulate low-energy nuclear states. However, real-world applications of quantum computing for nuclear theory often generate deep quantum circuits that place demanding memory and processing requirements on conventional simulation methods. Here, we present advances in high-performance numerical simulations of deep quantum circuits to efficiently verify the accuracy of low-energy nuclear physics applications. Our approach employs novel methods for accelerating the numerical simulation including management of simulated mid-circuit measurements to verify projection based state preparation circuits. We test these methods across a variety of high-performance computing systems and our results show that circuits up to 21 qubits and more than 115,000,000 gates can be efficiently simulated. We are at the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterised by the interaction of so-called disruptive technologies (biotechnology, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, neurotechnology and artificial intelligence). We believe that the challenges posed by technoscience cannot be met by the three generations of human rights that already exist. The need to create a fourth generation of human rights is, therefore, explored in this article. For that purpose, the state of the art will be analysed from a scientific and ethical perspective. We will consider the position of academic doctrines on the issues that a fourth generation of human rights should tackle. And, finally, in this fourth generation, we will propose the principles of identity and precaution as reference values, equivalent to the role played by freedom, equality and solidarity in the first three generations of human rights. Beach rankings are very frequent on the internet; however, the information provided on how these rankings are made is often unclear and their content is mostly subjective. In addition, the vast majority of these rankings do not take into account the fact that beaches are coastal eco-systems. The aim of the research was to develop an objective framework to rank the quality of beaches worldwide. The framework integrates indicators to assess the socio-ecological system quality and can be used as a basis for effective beach management. The methodology involved the collection, evaluation and grouping of indicators into domains and categories. Moreover, a measurement technique and a 5-point rating score for each indicator was used. Weights were calculated for different beach types using an analytical hierarchical process and the methodology was validated by a focus group of beach management experts. The quality value of each beach was calculated through equations and the results were presented in graphs inspired by the Circles of Sustainability and the Ocean Health Index. The theoretical application was tested on Portuguese beaches. The framework presents a holistic assessment of four domains: Recreation, Protection, Conservation and Sanitary. The resulting Beach Ranking Framework (BRF) is an objective, holistic framework designed to communicate with society, unlike the existing beach quality assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Coagulation decompensation is one of the complications most frequently encountered in COVID-19 patients with a poor prognosis or long-COVID syndrome, possibly due to the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the cardiovascular system. To date, the mechanism underlying the alteration of the coagulation cascade in COVID-19 patients remains misunderstood and the anticoagulant protein S (PROS1) has been described as a potential risk factor for complications related to COVID-19, due to PLpro SARS-CoV-2 enzyme proteolysis. Methods: Biopsies and blood samples were collected from SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative swab test subjects with coagulopathies (peripheral arterial thrombosis), and SARS-CoV-2 presence, ACE2 and CD147 expression, and plasmatic levels of PROS1 were evaluated. Results: We reported a significant decrease of plasmatic PROS1 in the coagulopathic SARS-CoV-2 swab positive cohort, in association with SARS-CoV-2 in situ infection and CD147 peculiar expression. These data suggested that SARS-CoV-2 associated thrombotic/ischemic events might involve PROS1 cleavage by viral PLpro directly in the site of infection, leading to the loss of its anticoagulant function. Conclusions: Based on this evidence, the identification of predisposing factors, such as CD147 increased expression, and the use of PLpro inhibitors to preserve PROS1 function, might be useful for COVID-19 coagulopathies management. This study analyzes the content of internet ratings of beaches to identify the indicators used. The methodology used an exploratory internet survey using the term 'best beaches' in five languages. For each site, the ranking method used was extracted and the indicators considered were listed, where applicable. Of the 70 websites analyzed, 47 ranked the beaches (67%) but less than 50% used indicators. The remaining were based on the opinion of the editorial board, personal experience, and users' perceptions. The most used indicator was the color of water, followed by the color of the sand. These results show that the majority of 'best beaches' lists are based on subjective criteria. They are an overview of places that appeal to the person that wrote the page and are not scientifically or analytically based. Even when indicators are considered, these are mostly a reflection of the idea of an idealized beach, crystal blue waters with white or gold sand. The actual quality of the beach, including water quality, carrying capacity, and ecosystem balance, is not addressed. Although visual attractiveness is a key element for the public, these rankings should incorporate a wider range of indicators to fully assess the quality of a beach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Brazil and around the world, cardiovascular diseases are responsible for thousands of deaths every year. Among these, those related to ischemic heart disease stand out. From this perspective, to assist in the development of effective and timely health strategies and policies, this study aimed to analyze deaths from Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) reported in municipalities belonging to the I Regional Health Management (GERES) of Pernambuco in the years 2018 to 2021. This is a retrospective ecological study, carried out using data from the Mortality Information System. The variables used to describe deaths from AMI were: municipality of coverage, sex, age, color/race, education, marital status and place of death. The results showed a reduction in deaths due to heart attacks in the municipalities and years investigated. The variables studied showed a statistically significant association with the rates of deaths from AMI. The predominant profile of deaths from heart attacks was among residents of the reef, male, mixed race, with one to three years of education, aged 75 and over and married. This study makes important contributions by describing the profile of deaths due to AMI in the I GERES municipalities of Pernambuco and can help guide public health strategies. Objective: To conduct a bibliographic review on tuberculosis (TB) disease in children and adolescents with rheumatic diseases, being managed with biologic therapy. Data source: An integrative review with a search in the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (PubMed) using the following descriptors and Boolean operators: ([“tuberculosis”] AND ([“children”] OR [“adolescent”]) AND [“rheumatic diseases”] AND ([“tumor necrosis factor-alpha”] OR [“etanercept”] OR [“adalimumab”] OR [“infliximab”] OR [“biological drugs”] OR [“rituximab”] OR [“belimumab”] OR [“tocilizumab”] OR [“canakinumab”] OR [“golimumab”] OR [“secukinumab”] OR [“ustekinumab”] OR [“tofacitinib”] OR [“baricitinib”] OR [“anakinra”] OR [“rilonacept”] OR [“abatacept”]), between January 2010 and October 2021. Data synthesis: Thirty-seven articles were included, with the total number of 36,198 patients. There were 81 cases of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), 80 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), and four of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). The main rheumatic disease was juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Among LTBI cases, most were diagnosed at screening and none progressed to TB disease during follow-up. Of the TB cases using biologics, most used tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors (anti-TNFα) drugs. There was only one death. Conclusions: The study revealed a low rate of active TB in pediatric patients using biologic therapy. Screening for LTBI before initiating biologics should be done in all patients, and treatment, in cases of positive screening, plays a critical role in preventing progression to TB disease. The attitude determination system is an important subsystem for most satellite missions. Attitude estimation is often performed using Kalman filters. In particular, for nanosatellites or CubeSats missions, a compromise between precision in the results and low computational load must be achieved, due to design constraints, such as reduced size and cost. In this work, it is proposed to evaluate the performance in attitude determination of a central difference Kalman filter, and compared to an extended Kalman filter. The application of the Kalman filter in non-linear problems requires the calculation of partial derivatives matrices (Jacobian matrices) of the dynamics or measurements, originating the extended version of the filter. In some cases, this calculation may be analytically impossible, complex, or even very computationally expensive. The central difference filter formulation uses a polynomial interpolation to avoid computing these Jacobian matrices. The same set of simulated data was applied to both extended and central difference filters, and the results were compared to the true values given by the simulation. The data were simulated considering a CubeSat 3U equipped with gyroscopes, magnetometers, and sun sensor, and the attitude was parametrized by quaternions. The values estimated by the filters are attitude quaternions and gyroscope deviations (bias). Performance was analyzed in terms of quaternion and gyroscope bias errors, and computational load. Finally, the analysis shows the comparative advantages and disadvantages of the central difference filter to the extended Kalman filter and the unscented Kalman filter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Household chemicals may act as irritants in the lungs; however, their association with recurrent wheeze and asthma in children remains controversial. We aimed to investigate if household cleaning product exposure in infancy is associated with recurrent wheezing and asthma development in children. Methods: We analyzed data from two cohorts: MARC-35 consisting of 815 children with history of severe bronchiolitis in infancy, and MARC-43 consisting of 525 healthy children in infancy. Frequency of use of cleaning product at the child's home during infancy was collected via telephone interview with parents. Outcomes were recurrent wheezing by age 3 years and asthma diagnosis at age 6 years. Results: In MARC-35, there was no association between cleaning product exposure in infancy and recurrent wheeze (adjusted HR = 1.01 [95% CI 0.66–1.54] for 4–7 days/week exposure frequency), nor asthma (adjusted OR = 0.91 [95% CI 0.51–1.63]). In MARC-43, there was also no association between cleaning product exposure in infancy and recurrent wheeze (adjusted HR = 0.69 [95% CI 0.29–1.67] for 4–7 days/week exposure frequency). Conclusion: We found no association between household cleaning product exposure in infancy and later development of recurrent wheeze or asthma, even among children who are at high risk for asthma due to history of severe bronchiolitis. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a clinical condition with a prevalence of up to 25% in Western countries. Typical GERD symptoms include heartburn and retrosternal regurgitation. Lifestyle modifications, including diet, are considered a first-line therapeutic approach. To evaluate the impact of life habits on GERD in this cross-sectional study, we used data collected through an online survey from 1146 participants. GERD was defined according to the Montreal Consensus. For all participants, clinical and lifestyle characteristics were recorded. Overall, 723 participants (63.1%) consumed a diet including animal food (non-vegans), and 423 participants (36.9%) were vegans. The prevalence of GERD was 11% (CI 95%, 9–14%) in non-vegans and 6% (CI 95%, 4–8%) in vegans. In the multivariate analysis, after adjusting for confounding factors, subjects on a non-vegan diet were associated with a two-fold increase in the prevalence of GERD compared to vegans (OR = 1.96, CI 95%, 1.22–3.17, p = 0.006). BMI and smoking habits were also significantly associated with GERD. This study shows that an animal food-based diet (meat, fish, poultry, dairy, and eggs) is associated with an increased risk of GERD compared to a vegan diet. Cystic fibrosis (CF), the most common autosomal recessive fatal genetic disease in the Caucasian population, is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), an anion channel that regulates salt and water transport across a variety of secretory epithelia. Deletion of phenylalanine at position 508, F508del, the most common CF-causing mutation, destabilises the CFTR protein, causing folding and trafficking defects that lead to a dramatic reduction in its functional expression. Small molecules called correctors have been developed to rescue processing-defective F508del CFTR. We have combined in silico and in vitro approaches to investigate the mechanism of action and potential as CFTR correctors of three hybrid derivatives (2a, 7a, and 7m) obtained by merging the amino-arylthiazole core with the benzodioxole carboxamide moiety characterising the corrector lumacaftor. Molecular modelling analyses suggested that the three hybrids interact with a putative region located at the MSD1/NBD1 interface. Biochemical analyses confirmed these results, showing that the three molecules affect the expression and stability of the F508del NBD1. Finally, the YFP assay was used to evaluate the influence of the three hybrid derivatives on F508del CFTR function, assessing that their effect is additive to that of the correctors VX661 and VX445. Our study shows that the development and testing of optimised compounds targeting different structural and functional defects of mutant CFTR is the best strategy to provide more effective correctors that could be used alone or in combination as a valuable therapeutic option to treat an even larger cohort of people affected by CF. We consider solutions of p (x) -Laplacian systems with coefficients and we show that their gradient is continuous provided that the variable exponent has distributional gradient belonging to the Lorentz-Zygmund space L n , 1 log ⁡ L and that the gradient of the coefficient belongs to the Lorentz space L n , 1. The result is new since the use of the sharp Sobolev embedding in rearrangement invariant spaces does not ensure the unique (up to now) known assumption for such result, namely the log-Dini continuity of p (⋅) and the plain Dini continuity of the coefficient. Background and Purpose: Nociplastic pain due to central sensitization (CS) is common in people suffering from chronic pain, but no clinical practice guideline is available in rehabilitative settings for patients' management. The aim of this study is to achieve expert consensus on physiotherapy competencies in the management of people with nociplastic pain and suspected CS mechanisms. Methods: A web‐based Delphi process was employed. Experts in the rehabilitation field were recruited following pre‐defined eligibility criteria. Following completion of three Delphi rounds, the final list of competencies was generated. Results: In all, 23 participants were recruited. They all completed Round 1 (23/23, 100%), twenty Round 2 and Round 3 (20/23, 87%). Following Round 1, seven areas were identified by the panel as crucial for CS physiotherapy management; 19 competencies out of 40 reached the consensus between experts, and nine additional competencies were added to Round 2 following literary review. Round 2 identified the agreement for all the 29 competencies. During Round 3, all the experts confirmed the final list generated through the consensus process. Discussion: An agreement between experts was found for the final list of competencies that a physiotherapist should implement every time it approaches people with suspected CS mechanisms. Research in the treatment of type 1 diabetes has been addressed into two main areas: the development of "intelligent insulins" capable of auto-regulating their own levels according to glucose concentrations, or the exploitation of artificial intelligence (AI) and its learning capacity, to provide decision support systems to improve automated insulin therapy. This review aims to provide a synthetic overview of the current state of these two research areas, providing an outline of the latest development in the search for "intelligent insulins," and the results of new and promising advances in the use of artificial intelligence to regulate automated insulin infusion and glucose control. The COVID-19 pandemic originated in 2019 and has become an endemic disease that we must learn to live with, similar to other strains of influenza. The Organization (WHO) declared on May 5, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland, the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern regarding COVID-19. As vaccines become more widely available and the pandemic appears to be improved, our focus shifts to the challenges we still face. Understanding how external factors like temperature, air humidity, and social isolation impact the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains a crucial challenge beyond our control. In this study, potential links between the number of COVID-19 cases in São Paulo City (SPC) and New York City (NWC) were explored. Our analysis was carried out utilizing the continuous wavelet transform, alongside other tools such as cross-wavelet transform and wavelet coherence. Based on our findings, there appears to be a correlation between the variables related to low frequencies, which aligns with previous research on the topic. Particularly, our research has revealed a connection between COVID-19 cases and factors such as temperature, air humidity, and social isolation rates. Regarding the latter, our findings indicate that implementing social distancing measures was a wise public policy decision, although the correlation with daily COVID-19 cases requires careful analysis. For this study, we analyzed data from February of 2020, when the first cases were reported in the cities under investigation, SPC and NWC, up until December 31, 2022, by which time the vaccination campaign was well under way. This paper describes a novel nanoformulation for dual MRI/US in vivo monitoring of drug delivery/release. The nanosystem was made of a perfluoropentane core coated with phospholipids stabilized by glycol chitosan crosslinked with triphosphate ions, and it was co-loaded with the prodrug prednisolone phosphate (PLP) and the structurally similar MRI agent Gd-DTPAMA-CHOL. Importantly, the in vitro release of PLP and Gd-DTPAMA-CHOL from the nanocarrier showed similar profiles, validating the potential impact of the MRI agent as an imaging reporter for the drug release. On the other hand, the nanobubbles were also detectable by US imaging both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, the temporal evolution of both MRI and US contrast after the administration of the proposed nanosystem could report on the delivery and the release kinetics of the transported drug in a given lesion. Cavity nesting birds depend on the availability of tree cavities for breeding, but the structure of the surrounding environment may also impact cavity occupancy. Here we investigated the effects of forest structure on occupancy rates of excavated cavities and similar-size nest boxes by cavity nesters in managed southern boreal forests in Finland. We recorded the occupancy over five breeding seasons (2017–2021) and derived forest structure parameters from high-resolution thematic raster maps. We found a high occupancy rate in nest boxes (81%), but lower rates in natural cavities excavated in forest interior, forest edges and retention trees (42-46%). The analyzes focusing on Paridae only revealed that the occupancy rates in nest boxes were decreasing with increasing amounts of Norway spruce and deciduous tree foliage biomass, and tree height, but increasing with the proportion of Scots pine. In forest interior cavities, we found a negative effect of stand age but a positive effect of the proportion of spruce. We conclude that the benefits of nest boxes can be maximized by considering specific forest parameters when deploying them. We developed and validated a technology platform for designing and testing peptides inhibiting the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-based pseudoviruses. This platform integrates target evaluation, in silico inhibitor design, peptide synthesis, and efficacy screening. We generated a cyclic peptide library derived from the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. The cell-free validation process by ELISA competition assays and Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) studies revealed that the cyclic peptide c9_05, but not its linear form, binds well to ACE2. Moreover, it effectively inhibited the transduction in HEK293, stably expressing the human ACE2 receptor of pseudovirus particles displaying the SARS-CoV-2 spike in the Wuhan or UK variants. However, the inhibitory efficacy of c9_05 was negligible against the Omicron variant, and it failed to impede the entry of pseudoviruses carrying the B.1.351 (South African) spike. These variants contain three or more mutations known to increase affinity to ACE2. This suggests further refinement is needed for potential SARS-CoV-2 inhibition. Our study hints at a promising approach to develop inhibitors targeting viral infectivity receptors, including SARS-CoV-2's. Male sheep (n = 27) from three different breeds: 1) Gulf Coast Native (GCN; n = 9 wethers), 2) Suffolk x Hampshire (SHC; n = 9 wethers), and 3) Jacob (JCB; n = 9 intact males) approximately 9 mo of age, [body weight (BW) = 38.16 ± 2.43 kg) were stratified by BW and breed into 3 treatment groups to examine the impact of breed, supplemental copper (Cu) dose, and liver sampling location on liver Cu concentrations. On d 0 of the experiment, liver biopsies were collected from 5 sheep per breed and analyzed for Cu concentrations. Animals were housed in individual pens and received 2% of BW of a pelleted concentrate containing the appropriate Cu treatment once daily and hay in amounts to allow ad libitum access to hay over a 24 h period. Treatments consisted of 1) low Cu (LCu; 15.3 mg Cu/kg DM), 2) moderate Cu (MCu; 17.7 mg Cu/kg DM), and 3) high Cu (HCu; 23.8 mg Cu/kg DM) from CuSO4∙5H2O. On d 50 of the experiment, all animals were weighed and trans- ported to an USDA inspected abattoir and harvested. Following harvest, samples were obtained from the left and right lobes of the liver and thoroughly washed with phosphate-buffered saline. All liver samples were dried, ashed, and reconstituted in 5 mL of 1.2 N HCl for Cu analysis. Data were analyzed as a randomized block design using the MIXED procedure in SAS with individual animal as the experimental unit. There was a three-way interaction between breed x treatment x liver lobe (P < 0.04). The right liver lobe in HCu JCB sheep had greater (P < 0.05) Cu concentrations compared with the left liver lobe. Both the left and right lobes of the liver had greater (P < 0.001) Cu concentrations compared with the initial liver Cu concentration in MCu JCB sheep. The right liver lobe of HCu GCN sheep tended (P < 0.07) to have greater liver Cu concentrations compared with the left liver lobe. The Cu concentration in the right liver lobe tended (P < 0.09) to be greater in MCu sheep compared with the left liver lobe. Liver Cu concentrations within the right lobe of HCu GCN sheep were greater (P < 0.05) than liver Cu concentrations in the right and left liver lobe samples in LCu GCN sheep. Liver Cu concentrations in SHC sheep were not influenced by treatment. The structural properties of glassy diboron trioxide, g-B2O3, are investigated from ambient to high pressure conditions using two types of atomic force-field models that account for many-body effects. These models are parameterized by a dipole- and force-fitting procedure of reference datasets created via first-principles calculations on a series of configurations. The predictions of the models are tested against experimental data, where particular attention is paid to the structural transitions in g-B2O3 that involve changes to both the short- and medium-range order. The models outperform those previously devised, where improvement originates from the incorporation of two key physical ingredients, namely, (i) the polarizability of the oxide ion and (ii) the ability of an oxide ion to change both size and shape in response to its coordination environment. Attacks on journalists and the media in Brazil have a long history but have become even more problematic through the use of social media, particularly following the election of Jair Bolsonaro as president in 2019. In times of industry restructuring and coronavirus pandemic, the systematic attacks on individual journalists and on the media by Bolsonaro and his associates are posing unprecedented challenges, and are part of a pattern of abuse to suppress media freedom and discredit journalists' work. This article focuses upon journalists' abilities to access different types of capital to anticipate, cope with, and create options to overcome perceived threats and generate positive outcomes. This study builds upon the works of Voss (Behemoth-A Journal on Civilisation 1 (3): 39–56, 2008), Obrist, Pfeiffer and Henley (Progress in Development Studies 10 (4): 283–293, 2010) and Hess' (Communication Theory 23 (2): 112–130, 2013) "mediated social capital" to advance understanding of the nexus amongst risk, vulnerability and social resilience, and examines structural inequalities in and through the media. By employing a mixed-methods approach, we combine the results of a survey and in-depth interviews with high-profile figures of leading newspapers and professional bodies in the country. The findings open up possibilities on how news media's "mediated social capital" might enhance women journalists' capacity to move from vulnerability to social resilience, improving their safety. More recently, the possible use of LAAO in the synergy of OAC therapy in patients with extremely high embolic risk, such as those with evidence of failure of OAC therapy, has been proposed [[20]]. We perform the first compositional, morphological, and contextual analysis of metal objects from the Southern Puna of Argentina (1430–2070 BP). Our analysis adds to the knowledge of the south-central Andean copper metallurgy by looking at a region outside of the main productive centers of this technology. Unalloyed copper and arsenical and lead-arsenical copper alloys with a variety of minority elements that correspond to different ores and, potentially, different production places within the south-central Andes are identified by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). We argue that the metal would have circulated long distances on different routes within the framework of social networks that linked areas at different heights on both Andean slopes. The Southern Puna constitutes a node in this circulation during the Middle period when metal objects were integrated into domestic rituals of foundation and closure by the co-resident group connected to the agropastoralist annual cycle, through which the domestic animals would be propitiated and the territory would be claimed. Pharmacological treatments for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have a partial efficacy. Augmented Na+ content and water retention are observed in human cancers and offer unexplored targets for anticancer therapies. Na+ levels are evaluated upon treatments with the antibiotic cation ionophore Monensin by fluorimetry, ICP-MS, 23Na-MRI, NMR relaxometry, confocal or time-lapse analysis related to energy production, water fluxes and cell death, employing both murine and human HCC cell lines, primary murine hepatocytes, or HCC allografts in NSG mice. Na+ levels of HCC cells and tissue are 8-10 times higher than that of healthy hepatocytes and livers. Monensin further increases Na+ levels in HCC cells and in HCC allografts but not in primary hepatocytes and in normal hepatic and extrahepatic tissue. The Na+ increase is associated with energy depletion, mitochondrial Na+ load and inhibition of O2 consumption. The Na+ increase causes an enhancement of the intracellular water lifetime and death of HCC cells, and a regression and necrosis of allograft tumors, without affecting the proliferating activity of either HCCs or healthy tissues. These observations indicate that HCC cells are, unlike healthy cells, energetically incapable of compensating and surviving a pharmacologically induced Na+ load, highlighting Na+ homeostasis as druggable target for HCC therapy. The ionophore monensin is shown to have cancer-selective cytotoxic action by selectively increasing the sodium content in cultured hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCC) and allografts, highlighting the sensitivity of HCC cells to pharmacologically induced Na+ load. Context: We reviewed what has been studied and published during the last 3 years about the consequences, mainly respiratory, cardiac, digestive, and neurological/psychiatric (organic and functional), in patients with COVID-19 of prolonged course. Objective: To conduct a narrative review synthesizing current clinical evidence of abnormalities of signs, symptoms, and complementary studies in COVID-19 patients who presented a prolonged and complicated course. Methods: A review of the literature focused on the involvement of the main organic functions mentioned, based almost exclusively on the systematic search of publications written in English available on PubMed/MEDLINE. Results: Long-term respiratory, cardiac, digestive, and neurological/psychiatric dysfunction are present in a significant number of patients. Lung involvement is the most common; cardiovascular involvement may happen with or without symptoms or clinical abnormalities; gastrointestinal compromise includes the loss of appetite, nausea, gastroesophageal reflux, diarrhea, etc.; and neurological/psychiatric compromise can produce a wide variety of signs and symptoms, either organic or functional. Vaccination is not associated with the emergence of long-COVID, but it may happen in vaccinated people. Conclusions: The severity of illness increases the risk of long-COVID. Pulmonary sequelae, cardiomyopathy, the detection of ribonucleic acid in the gastrointestinal tract, and headaches and cognitive impairment may become refractory in severely ill COVID-19 patients. This research aims to investigate the formative power of marginal peripheral literary production based on the narratives of peripheral writers. Assuming that this research could not be dissociated from my life trajectory, the (auto)biographical narrative permeates the entire research as an important instrument in the investigation and (self)education process (SOUZA, 2007). From the understanding that marginal peripheral literature is always singular and local, but at the same time global and social, the methodological approach will also start from narrative research (CLANDININ and CONNELLY, 2011) and from the methodology of conversations (SAMPAIO; RIBEIRO; SOUZA, 2018). With the production of Soares (2009) and Ferréz (2005), my experiences as a peripheral writer and the narratives of other peripheral writers, I seek to understand how marginal peripheral literature is inscribed in different spaces of formation, among them, the streets and the schools. The present dossier aims to bring together curricular creations that destabilize the disenchantment of the world from the understanding of difference as a heritage of humanity. Many media devices, social networks, television programs have contributed to the dissemination of an avalanche of information that amplify the discourses in defense of policies of control over the curricula in educational institutions, of devaluation of education, of disqualification of teacher training, of devaluation of the public school, in addition to the subordination of practitioners-thinkers (OLIVEIRA, 2012) to a pattern of Eurocentric and excluding humanity. In this scenario, there is the emergence of inversion of these processes. We propose, then, the perspective of the re-enchantment of the world from the curricular creations that takes place in educational processes, whether in formal spaces or not, and that consider the utopian novelty as a tactic for building a world where all worlds fit. Background: Although clinical practice guidelines recommend pain education as the first-line option for the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, there is a lack of pain education programmes in healthcare. Thus, digital health programmes can be an effective tool for implementing pain education strategies for public health. This trial will aim to analyse the implementation and effectiveness outcomes of three online pain science education strategies in the Brazilian public health system (SUS) for individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Methods: We will conduct a hybrid type III effectiveness-implementation randomised controlled trial with economic evaluation. We will include adult individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain, recruited from primary healthcare in the city of Guarapuava, Brazil. Individuals will be randomised to three implementation groups receiving a pain science education intervention (EducaDor) but delivered in different modalities: group 1) synchronous online; group 2) asynchronous videos; and group 3) interactive e-book only. Implementation outcomes will include acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, adoption, fidelity, penetration, sustainability, and costs. We will also assess effectiveness outcomes, such as pain, function, quality of life, sleep, self-efficacy, and adverse effects. Cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses will be conducted from the SUS and societal perspectives. The evaluations will be done at baseline, post-intervention (10 weeks), and 6 months. Discussion: This study will develop and implement a collaborative intervention model involving primary healthcare professionals, secondary-level healthcare providers, and patients to enhance self-management of chronic pain. In addition to promoting better pain management, this study will also contribute to the field of implementation science in public health by generating important insights and recommendations for future interventions. Coffea canephora (C. canephora) has two botanical varieties, Robusta and Conilon. Intraspecific variability was hypothesized and projected for the selection of C. canephora plants able to maintain production in the context of global climate changes. For that, architectural, C-assimilation and biomass analyses were performed on 17-month-old Robusta (clones 'A1' and '3 V') and Conilon (clones '14' and '19') varieties grown in non-limiting soil, water and mineral nutrient conditions. Nondestructive coffee plant architecture coding, reconstruction and plant photosynthesis estimations were performed using a functional-structural plant modeling platform OpenAlea. 3D reconstructions and inclusion of parameters calculated and estimated from light response curves, such as dark respiration (R d), maximum rate of carboxylation of RuBisCO and photosynthetic electron transport allowed the estimation of instantaneous and daily plant photosynthesis. The virtual orchard leaf area index was low, and light was not a limiting factor in early C. canephora development stages. Under such conditions, Robusta assimilated more CO2 at the plant and orchard scale and produced higher total biomass than Conilon. Lower plant daily photosynthesis and total biomass were correlated to higher R d in Conilon than in Robusta. Among the architectural traits, leaf inclination, size and allometry were most highly correlated with plant assimilation and biomass. Relative allocation in leaf biomass was higher in '19' Conilon than in young Robusta plants, indicating intraspecific biomass partitioning. Similarly, variation in relative distribution of the root biomass and the root volume reflected clonal variation in soil occupation, indicating intraspecific variability in space occupation competitiveness. Coffea canephora denoted high root allocation in both Conilon and Robusta clones. However, relevant differences at subspecific levels were found, indicating the high potential of C. canephora to cope with drought events, which are expected to occur more frequently in the future, because of climate changes. The methodology developed here has the potential to be used for other crops and tree species. Highlights Functional-structural plant model was used to estimate photosynthesis on a plant and daily scales in Coffea canephora (C. canephora). Among the architectural traits, leaf shape and inclination had the most impact on photosynthesis and biomass. Under non-limiting conditions, Robusta had higher plant photosynthesis and biomass than Conilon. A higher leaf biomass allocation in Conilon clone '19' than in Robusta suggested variety-specific partitioning. Background: Although neurovascular conflict (NVC) is the most widely accepted cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN), few articles have analyzed molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying TN. In the present study, we dosed neuron-specific enolase (NSE) on serum and CSF samples of 20 patients submitted to microvascular decompression (MVD) and correlated these findings with the type of NVC. Methods : Blood samples were obtained preoperatively and 48 h after MVD. CSF from trigeminal cistern was intraoperatively obtained. NSE levels were measured using the Diasorin kit (LIAISON®NSE). NVC was classified as "contact" or "trigeminal nerve distortion/indentation" or "trigeminal root atrophy" based on MRI and intraoperative findings. Clinical outcome was measured by acute pain relief (APR) and Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) scale at last available follow-up (FU; 6.40 ± 5.38 months). Results: APR was obtained in all patients. A statistically significant BNI reduction was obtained at latest FU (p < 0.0001). Serum NSE levels significantly decreased following MVD (from 12.15 ± 3.02 ng/mL to 8.95 ± 2.83 ng/mL, p = 0.001). The mean CSF NSE value was 48.94 ng/mL, and the mean CSF/serum NSE rate was 4.18 with a strong correlation between these two variables (p = 0.0008). CSF NSE level in "trigeminal root atrophy" group was significantly higher compared to "contact" (p = 0.0045) and "distortion/indentation" (p = 0.010) groups. Conclusion: NSE levels seem to be related to the etiopathology and severity of NVC. Medulloblastoma is the most common type of pediatric malignant primary brain tumor, and about one-third of patients die due to disease recurrence and most survivors suffer from long-term side effects. MB is clinically, genetically, and epigenetically heterogeneous and subdivided into at least four molecular subgroups: WNT, SHH, Group 3, and Group 4. We evaluated common differentially expressed genes between a Brazilian RNA-seq GSE181293 dataset and microarray GSE85217 dataset cohort of pediatric MB samples using bioinformatics methodology in order to identify hub genes of the molecular subgroups based on PPI network construction, survival and functional analysis. The main finding was the identification of five hub genes from the WNT subgroup that are tumor suppressors, and whose lower expression is related to a worse prognosis for MB patients. Furthermore, the common genes correlated with the five tumor suppressors participate in important pathways and processes for tumor initiation and progression, as well as development and differentiation, and some of them control cell stemness and pluripotency. These genes have not yet been studied within the context of MB, representing new important elements for investigation in the search for therapeutic targets, prognostic markers or for understanding of MB biology. Monoderm bacteria accumulate heme b via the coproporphyrin-dependent biosynthesis pathway. In the final step, in the presence of two molecules of H2O2, the propionate groups of coproheme at positions 2 and 4 are decarboxylated to form vinyl groups by coproheme decarboxylase (ChdC), in a stepwise process. Decarboxylation of propionate 2 produces an intermediate that rotates by 90° inside the protein pocket, bringing propionate 4 near the catalytic tyrosine, to allow the second decarboxylation step. The active site of ChdCs is stabilized by an extensive H-bond network involving water molecules, specific amino acid residues, and the propionate groups of the porphyrin. To evaluate the role of these H-bonds in the pocket stability and enzyme functionality, we characterized, via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies, single and double mutants of the actinobacterial pathogen Corynebacterium diphtheriae ChdC complexed with coproheme and heme b. The selective elimination of the H-bond interactions between propionates 2, 4, 6, and 7 and the polar residues of the pocket allowed us to establish the role of each H-bond in the catalytic reaction and to follow the changes in the interactions from the substrate to the product. Objective: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale‐Self Report (LSAS‐SR) is a self‐report measure of social anxiety (SA), which has shown adequate psychometric properties across cultures. However, no study has systematically evaluated its measurement invariance (MI) between (a) individuals with and without a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and (b) males and females. The current study addresses this issue. Methods: We collected data on 257 (158 females) Italian individuals diagnosed with SAD and 356 (232 females) community‐dwelling adults. Results: We initially found support for the unidimensionality of the Italian LSAS‐SR measurement model in all samples. Using the Graded Response Model, we obtained evidence of partial MI and differential item functioning between community‐dwelling and SAD‐diagnosed individuals and evidence of strong MI between male and female participants. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the Italian LSAS‐SR measures the same trait in the same way across the symptom continuum and sexes, making it a psychometrically sound tool for assessment, screening, and research purposes. Objective: to describe the relationship between negative psycho-emotional aspects in the development and control of arterial hypertension and the contributions of physical exercise to both variables. Method: integrative literature review study intended to answer the question: "What is the relationship between negative psycho-emotional factors in the development and progression of arterial hypertension and the contributions of physical exercise to both?". The survey was carried out through MEDLINE, LILACS, Scopus databases, and the PubMed portal, which sought to identify studies published in the years from 2016 to 2022. Results: 509 titles were identified, of which ten were selected to compose the sample. Factors such as depression, psychological stress, anxiety, sadness, anger, tension, and excessive worries showed a positive correlation with an increased risk of developing uncontrolled hypertension. The regular practice of physical exercise continues to be an essential ally in the prevention and reduction of negative psycho-emotional symptoms, such as in the treatment of hypertension. Conclusion: there was a positive relationship between negative psychoemotional aspects and an increase in the risk of developing hypertension and compromising disease control, with physical exercise being a beneficial factor for both variables. Proteolysis‐targeting chimeras (PROTACs) are novel therapeutics for the treatment of human disease. They exploit the enormous potential of the E3 ligases, a class of proteins that mark a target protein for degradation via the ubiquitin–proteasome system. Despite the existence of several E3 ligase‐related databases, the choice of the functioning ligase is limited to only 1.6% of those available, probably due to the fragmentary understanding of their structures and their known ligands; in fact, none of the existing databases report detailed studies covering their 3D structure or their pockets. Here, we report ELIOT (E3 LIgase pocketOme navigaTor), an accurate and complete platform containing the E3 ligase pocketome to enable navigation and selection of new E3 ligases and new ligands for the design of new PROTACs. All E3 ligase pockets were characterized with innovative 3D descriptors including their PROTAC‐ability score, and similarity analyses between E3 pockets are presented. Tissue specificity and their degree of involvement in patients with specific cancer types are also annotated for each E3 ligase, enabling appropriate selection for the design of a PROTAC with improved specificity. The final disposal of sewage sludge is an environmental problem aggravated by population growth. After a stabilization process the residue is called biosolid and may be used in the production of forest seedlings. Current paper evaluates the survival and growth of seedlings of selected progenies of Eremanthus erythropappus grown in different compositions of substrates with biosolid. Seeds were collected in a matrix with five origins (Carrancas, Baependi, Morro do Pilar, Delfim Moreira and Itabirito). Substrates were formulated with increasing percentages of biosolid (0%, 30%, 60%, 90%), decreasing coconut fiber (90%, 60%, 30%, 0%), and a constant percentage of vermiculite (10%). At 60 days after sowing, survival was evaluated and at 120 days the height and diameter of the seedlings were measured. There was no interaction between progenies and substrate formulation. The progenies differed in survival and height, with Carrancas providing the worst result. In the seedling phase, the selection of progenies may be undertaken. The substrate without biosolid provided seedlings with greater height and diameter. The use of biosolid is not recommended for Eremanthus erythropappus seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blastosporella zonata is one of the few basidiomycete fungi that produce asexual spores (conidia) on the mushroom. The role of these conidia in the fungal lifecycle is not known. We tested whether conidia are being utilized in local dispersal by looking for signatures of clonality in 21 samples from three localities separated by about three kilometres in Murillo, Colombia. To identify clonally related individuals, we sequenced three polymorphic markers at two unlinked loci (nuclear rRNA: ITS and LSU, and TEF1a) for all collections plus three herbarium samples. We identified two sets of clonally related individuals growing closely together in one of the three localities, and only one pair shared between localities. In all three localities we observed multiple non-clonally related dikaryons showing that sexual reproduction is also important. Our results indicate that the conidia on the mushroom are primarily important for local dispersal. Unexpectedly, our results also indicate two reproductively isolated populations, possibly representing cryptic biological species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
