Harbors located in swell dominated seas may encounter problems such as inefficient performance of breakwaters and harbor oscillations. Taking a specific sea port in Chancay Bay, Peru, as an example, the performance of a breakwater and the characteristics of harbor oscillations are analyzed by numerical simulations. The results show that the breakwater is capable of providing protection against swell and the ratio of the wave heights inside and outside the harbor is approximately 0.15. The operational efficiency and safety at berth are guaranteed according to the tolerable wave height of short waves. The reduction of infragravity (IG) waves after they propagate into the harbor is negligible. Considerable downtime may be expected according to the tolerable IG waves. Therefore, IG waves should be taken into consideration during the design of harbor layouts and mooring systems and particularly, the natural periods of the mooring systems should not be close to the periods of IG waves inside the harbor. The results of the study presented in this paper may offer reference for the design of harbour layout and mooring system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
