Home textile is the most common business line in Denizli, Turkey. However, most companies are not integrated, i.e., they do not include the entire production processes in their facilities. Different stages of manufacturing process are outsourced to other companies located in the same geographic region. As a result of this, there is a considerable increase in transportation costs. In this paper, we consider collaboration between companies in a cluster to reduce their transportation costs. A game theoretic approach is proposed such that the subcontractors can be used jointly and their fabric production capacity can be split among the companies in the coalition in order to meet their demands. A case study of four home textile companies is provided to illustrate the approach. Coalition cost is allocated using different cost allocation methods, and compared to the current situation, we obtain significant cost reductions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The defining of upper crustal structures is an essential process for understanding the tectonic evolution and geodynamics of a region. In this context, the paper aims to determine basement depth and upper crustal structures through the Bouguer gravity anomalies and seismic reflection sections in Denizli Graben located in the western part of Turkey. The gravity data have been analyzed using the power spectrum technique. The results from this technique show that the average Moho depth, basement depth of the middle layer, and the depth of sediment basin in the region have been calculated as 33.6, 12.8, and 3.9 km, respectively. Furthermore, the Moho depth of the region has been estimated using gravity anomalies and is computed to be about 33 km in Denizli Graben. As such, it is shown that the depth values obtained from power spectrum analysis and Moho depth calculations are consistent with each other. Bouguer gravity anomalies have been also modeled three-dimensionally (3D). In the model map, the basement depth of the Denizli Graben has been calculated as approximately 9–10 km. Besides these, by interpreting the seismic section, the depth of the interface in the Denizli Graben has been obtained as approximately 2634 m for one-way travel time. This depth is quite shallow compared to the one (i.e., around 10 km) obtained from the gravity model. Thus, the interface seen in the seismic section is not considered to be the deepest part of the Denizli Graben. From the geothermal and oil exploration perspectives, the obtained basement and interface depths are quite beneficial, especially for the drilling planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The analytical and spectroscopic discrimination of marbles coming from quarries used in historical times is a task object of a wide interest in archaeometric investigations. This task is even more difficult, when the goal of the provenance assessment is focused on marbles coming from historical quarries located in a close geographic area. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy study aimed at assessing the discrimination criteria among 5 quarries located in the Denizli region (Anatolia, Turkey) that were benefited in Hellenistic and Roman period to provide materials for the buildings in the nearby city of Hierapolis of Phrygia (Turkey). The resulting EPR characterisation is used, in combination with the results of isotope geochemistry and petrological observation, to define criteria able to discriminate the provenance of marble samples from the considered quarries. The criteria arose from the analysis operated through robust compositional statistical techniques over the results of the experimental investigation. In this approach, the internal structure of the multimethodic dataset was unravelled. The results here presented provide evidence of a good discriminating ability of the proposed approach. Achillea alimeana Semiz & Uysal sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), was described, diagnosed and illustrated as a new species. It was collected from Akdağ Mountains in Denizli Province. In this paper, the diagnostic characters of A. alimeana and its similar species were discussed in the morphological, palynological and molecular findings. This paper reports the results of a case study of the application of the microtremor exploration method in western Turkey. We have conducted microtremor surveys at strong motion stations in Aydin and Denizli provinces to derive shallow S-wave velocity profiles. Array records of vertical microtremor motion were acquired at 12 and 15 stations in Aydin and Denizli provinces, respectively. A spatial autocorrelation analysis was applied to the records to estimate Rayleigh wave phase velocities in the frequency range of 3–30 Hz. Then, the phase velocity dispersion at each station was inverted to a one-dimensional S-wave profile down to a maximum depth of about 50 m. The soil models at 5 and 11 stations in Aydin and Denizli provinces, respectively, have a bedrock with an S-wave velocity of 400–600 m/s at depths less than 10 m. The spatial distribution of average S-wave velocities in the top 30 m of the revealed profiles shows low values in the Büyük Menderes Graben and the Denizli Basin, and high values in the surrounding hill or mountain areas. We compared our S-wave profiles with those from previous surface-wave studies. S-wave velocities in shallow parts to a depth of 5–10 m are similar in the two studies. Between 1973-1980, a local political movement called social(ist) municipality/new municipal movement/social democratic municipalism/democratic municipalism emerged in Turkey. The mentioned movement, created by the experiences of mayors who were producing local policies for urban poor, holds a valuable place in the history of Turkish local politics. Although many academic studies discuss the unique experiences and cases of the mentioned movement, Denizli city -a peculiar experience of social(ist) municipality- could not find a place in the literature. This paper will try to discuss the social(ist) municipality experience in the politics of Denizli. The main aim of the study is to focus on the unique and restricted parts of new municipalism in Denizli which were different from the mainstream discussions of Turkey. The new municipal experience in Denizli was shaped by the individual efforts of the mayor which produced local policies for urban poor. Producing local projects for urban poor in Denizli, called the castle of the center-right parties, caused tensions at the urban level. On the other hand, Denizli's new municipalism experience was deprived of urban social movements, urbanization experts and the political potential of slums. Mayor Hasan Gönüllü's political discourse, the featured parts of the new municipalism in Denizli and the comparison of Gönüllü's experience from the mainstream Turkish cases determine the basic problematic of the study. The early Pleistocene travertines from Kocabaş in the Denizli Basin (SW Turkey), from which the only known Homo erectus from Anatolia derives, are covered by a succession of lake deposits. So far, the taphonomic history of the site has precluded a detailed palaeoecological analysis. This paper details the sedimentary succession and palaeoenvironmental conditions by analysing the micro- and macropalaeontological species compositions. These data provide direct evidence of the opportunities and limiting factors of the environment inhabited by hominins during the early Pleistocene. Four distinctive lithostratigraphic units are recognized in the Quaternary succession, consisting of: Lower Travertine, Lower Conglomerates, Upper Travertine, and Upper Conglomerates. These units correspond to an alternation of lacustrine limestone, fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic deposits and subaerially precipitated travertine accumulations. The age of the succession is constrained by cosmogenic nuclide concentration, palaeomagnetic measurements and large mammal biostratigraphy which suggest deposition occurred between ∼1.6 and 1.2 Ma. The travertine succession contains a moderately diverse macromammal fauna, including Homo erectus , decapod crustaceans and leaf imprints. The herbivore association likely dwelled in a mixed landscape during temperate and humid climatic conditions, supported by negative δ18O values from analysed gastropod and bivalve shells. The presence of an anomalohaline lake is indicated by an abundant and well-preserved ostracod community, consisting of alkaline tolerant taxa and freshwater genera further supported by the presence of cardiid bivalves. In the spatial distribution of economic activities process the behavior of firms and individuals have changed in recent years. Now a close link between space and economy has been set up. This situation, which is caused by the heterogeneity of spaces, leads to reshape economic landscape of the world. As a result of positive externalities created by the cluster economies, cluster policies began to be implemented in economy policies effectively. The aim of this paper is to investigate the clustering tendency of firms operating in the province of Denizli textile industry. In this context, textile industry and the other firms located in Denizli Organized Industrial Zone have been accepted as cluster between 2006-2011 years. A survey of textile sector cluster analysis has conducted with 92 textile firms operating in Denizli. Therefore, it is found that there is a strong positive relationship between cluster-externality theories and practice in the current study that investigate whether a positive externality effects of cluster Denizli Organized Industrial Zone. According to the random effects panel data analysis results of Denizli OSB firms a 1% increase in the ratio of specialized labour force to total labour force reduces labour force costs by 0.37%. According to random effects panel data analysis of Denizli out of OSB the coefficient of the ratio of specialized labour force to total labour force is insignificant. For all companies both Denizli OSB and Denizli outside OSB the random effects panel data analysis results show that a 1 percent increase in the total labour force of the specialized labour force reduces labour force costs by 0.22 percent. Regional innovation system (RIS) requires that two subsystems co-exist in a region: The first subsystem is the knowledge exploitation structure of the industrial base (symbolic, synthetic and analytic knowledge bases) [Moodysson, J., Coenen, L. & Asheim, B. The second subsystem is the regional supportive infrastructure or knowledge-generating subsystem which consists of firms, educational institutions, knowledge organizations and other similar infrastructural bases in the region. The objective of the paper is to compare two textile-related clusters in Turkey with respect to the strengths and weaknesses of the RIS. The first region is Istanbul with a textile and fashion design cluster, the second region is Denizli which is an example of a traditional export-oriented centre for bathrobe and home textiles. Results of the empirical findings prove that the two regions having different knowledge bases and RISs have different deficiencies in innovative performance even if they are the subsectors of the same sector (textiles). This paper concerns a novel integrated system for geothermal-based power and hydrogen generation and blending of hydrogen into natural gas to feed household devices, such as gas stove and combi boiler. The system includes a combined flash and binary geothermal subsystem, an alkaline electrolyzer, a blending unit and a combustion reactor. The design and modelling of the proposed system are conducted with Aspen Plus software. The overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the investigated system are found to be 46.8% and 77.9%, respectively. The highest exergy efficiency belongs to January as 86.63% when the average ambient temperature is 5.8 °C, while the lowest exergy efficiency belongs to July as 76.98% when the average ambient temperature is 27.2 °C in Denizli, Turkey. The hydrogen fraction into natural gas is changed from 0% to 20% and analysed the combustion of the blend. The results show that syngas composition has higher oxygen output rate and lower carbon dioxide, steam and heat release rates with higher hydrogen addition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
