Due to global changes, e.g., climate change and trade globalization, China is facing an increasingly severe threat from invasive freshwater fish species, which have the potential to cause negative impacts across various aspects and pose significant challenges for their eradication once established. Therefore, prioritizing the understanding of invasive species' potential ranges and their determinants is vital for developing more targeted management strategies. Moreover, it is equally essential to consider the transitory range dynamics of invasive species that reflect changes in habitat availability and accessibility. Here, we used species distribution models (the maximum entropy algorithm) to assess the potential distributions of six notorious invasive fish species (i.e., Coptodon zillii , Cyprinus carpio , Gambusia affinis , Hemiculter leucisculus , Oreochromis mossambicus , and Oreochromis niloticus) in current and future (i.e., the 2030s, 2050s, and 2070s) periods along with their determinants, under two Shared Socio-economic Pathways scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5; global climate model: MRI-ESM2-0). Our results showed that the habitat suitability for the six species substantially benefited from temperature conditions (i.e., annual mean temperature or maximum temperature of warmest month). Throughout the given time periods, dramatic range expansions would occur for C. zillii , G. affinis , O. mossambicus , and O. niloticus , ranging from 38.61% to 291.90%. In contrast, the range of C. carpio would change slightly and irregularly, while H. leucisculus would contract marginally, with losses ranging from 1.06% to 12.60%. By the 2070s, species richness of these species would be relatively high in South, Central, and East China and parts of Southwest China. Furthermore, transitory fluctuations in the species ranges for all six species were observed throughout the entire time period (the 2030s–2070s). Given the range shifts for each species during different time periods, as well as time costs and budgets, adaptation strategies should be developed and implemented in the areas where they are most needed in each time period. Over the past centuries, freshwater fish introductions and extinctions have been the major environmental and ecological crises in various water bodies in China. However, consequences of such crises on freshwater fish biodiversity in China remain only partially or locally studied. Furthermore, identifications of relatively sensitive areas along with stressors (i.e., environmental and anthropogenic drivers) influencing freshwater fish biodiversity patterns are still pending. Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic facets of biodiversity can well describe and evaluate the underlying processes affecting freshwater fish biodiversity patterns under different dimensionalities. Here we thus evaluated temporal changes in these facets of freshwater fish biodiversity as well as a new developed biodiversity index, multifaceted changes in fish biodiversity, for over a century at the basin level throughout China using both alpha and beta diversity approaches. We also identified the drivers influencing the changes in fish biodiversity patterns using random forest models. The results showed that fish assemblages in Northwest and Southwest China (e.g., Ili River basin, Tarim basin, and Erhai Lake basin) experienced extreme temporal and multifaceted changes in the facets of biodiversity compared with other regions, and environmental factors (e.g., net primary productivity, average annual precipitation, and unit area) largely drove these changes. Since fish faunas in over 80% of China's water bodies covering more than 80% of China's surface were currently undergoing taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic homogenization, targeted conservation and management strategies should be proposed and implemented, especially for the areas with relatively high changes in biodiversity. China's freshwater ecosystems are gradually invaded by an increasing number of non-native fish species. However, to date, some controversy about the number of native and non-native freshwater fish species in wild habitats and very limited information on ecological or biological traits mediating fish introduction success at a national scale have prevented the proposal and implementation of targeted conservation and management strategies. To address these urgent issues, first we compiled an up-to-date inventory of 1,797 fish species (1,597, 84, and 116 native, exotic (originating from outside China), and translocated (originating from within China) species, respectively) along with 13 traits encompassing various ecological and life-history strategies for each species, which is the most comprehensive freshwater fish database in China as we know. Here, we found that non-native species mainly belonged to three orders (Perciformes, Siluriformes, and Cypriniformes) and three families (Cichlidae, Cyprinidae, and Salmonidae). Native species were significantly (P < 0.001) different from both exotic and translocated species according to their quantitative traits, while no remarkable differences between exotic and translocated species were detected (P = 0.93). Specifically, G -tests of independence, Similarity Percentage Analysis (SIMPER), and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon rank sum tests showed that compared to native species, species with relatively higher vulnerability (intrinsic vulnerability of fishes to fishing), trophic level, and pectoral fin vertical position, but less resilience and lateral body shape were deemed as potential candidates for introduction and dispersal in China. BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and lead exposure are high-prevalence conditions among children. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to investigate the association between ADHD and blood lead levels (BLLs) in Chinese children, adjusting for known ADHD risk factors and potential confounding variables. METHODS: We conducted a pair-matching case--control study with 630 ADHD cases and 630 non- ADHD controls 4--12 years of age, matched on the same age, sex, and socioeconomic status. The case and control children were systematically evaluated via structured diagnostic interviews, including caregiver interviews, based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., revised criteria (DSM-IV-R). We evaluated the association between BLLs and ADHD using the Pearson chi-square test for categorical variables and the Student t-test for continuous data. We then performed conditional multiple variables logistic regression analyses with backward stepwise selection to predict risk factors for ADHD. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in BLLs between ADHD cases and controls. ADHD cases were more likely to have been exposed to lead during childhood than the non-ADHD control subjects, with adjustment for other known risk factors [children with BLLs = 10 µg/dL vs. ≤ 5 µg/dL; OR = 6.0; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 4.10--8.77, p < 0.01; 5-10 µg/dL vs. ≤ 5 µg/dL, OR = 4.9; 95% CI = 3.47--6.98, p < 0.01]. These results were not modified by age and sex variables. CONCLUSIONS: This was the largest sample size case--control study to date to study the association between BLLs and ADHD in Chinese children. Objective: This survey aims to comprehensively understand occupational burnout among pre-hospital emergency medical personnel and explore associated risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey using a census method was conducted between 15 July, 2023, and ends on 14 August, 2023, in Chengdu, SiChuan province, China. The questionnaire included general demographic information, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS) with 15 items, and the Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) with 14 items. Univariate analysis was conducted on all variables, followed by multivariate logistic regression models to examine the associations between occupational burnout and the risk factors. Results: A total of 2,299 participants,99.57% completed the survey effectively The participants were from 166 medical institutions in Chengdu, comprising 1,420 nurses (61.50%) and 889 clinical doctors (38.50%). A total of 33.36% participants experienced burnout, predominantly mild (30.27%), followed by moderate (2.78%) and severe (0.3%). Physicians, higher fatigue scores, age, work experience appeared to be related to burnout. Logistic regression models revealed that individuals aged over 50 were less prone to experience burnout compared to medical staff aged 18–30 (OR: 0.269, 95% CI: 0.115–0.627, p = 0.002). Physicians were more prone to experience burnout compared to nursing staff (OR: 0.690, 95% CI: 0.531–0.898, p = 0.006). Those with 0–5 years of experience were more prone to experience burnout compared to those with 6–10 years or over 15 years of experience (OR: 0.734, 95% CI: 0.547–0.986, p = 0.040; OR: 0.559, 95% CI: 0.339–0.924, p = 0.023). Additionally, for each 1-point increase in the fatigue score, the likelihood of burnout in medical staff increased by 1.367 times (OR: 1.367, 95% CI: 1.323–1.412, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Pre-hospital emergency medical personnel demonstrate a notable prevalence of mild job burnout. These results provide a groundwork for future focus on the various stages of job burnout within pre-hospital emergency staff, alerting hospital and departmental managers to promptly address the mental well-being of their personnel and intervene as needed. BACKGROUND: Purple corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the main economic crops in China and has been used in the treatment of cystitis, urinary infections and obesity. However, purple corncobs, the by-product remaining after processing and having an intense purple-black color, are normally disposed of as waste or used as animal feed. Therefore, to further expand the medicinal value of purple corncob, its content was analyzed and, after purification, the effect and mechanism of purified purple corncob anthocyanins (PPCCA) on CCl4-induced chronic liver injury in mice were investigated. RESULTS: It was observed that the total anthocyanin content (TAC) from PPCCA (317.51 ± 9.30 mg cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C-3-G) g-1 dry weight) was significantly higher than that from the purified purple corn seed anthocyanin (266.73 ± 3.67 mg C- 3-G g-1 dry weight), of which C-3-G accounted for 90.6% and 90.4% of the TAC, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the CCl4 group, PPCCA treatment significantly reduced liver index, serum total bilirubin, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and liver malondialdehyde levels, but increased liver superoxide dismutase activity. The pathological changes were also improved, such as more regular arrangement of hepatocytes, less swelling, and fewer vacuoles and apoptotic cells. Additionally, mechanistic studies showed that PPCCA downregulated the expression of Caspase-3, Bax and cytochrome P450 2E1 proteins in the liver and upregulated the expression of Bcl-2. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrated that PPCCA could ameliorate CCl4-induced chronic liver injury by regulating oxidative stress and hepatocyte apoptosis pathways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variations in the concentrations and isotopic compositions (δ13CDIC) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) reflect contamination and biogeochemical cycling of the carbon in ground water. In order to understand contamination and biogeochemical cycling of DIC, we carried out research on the geochemistry of ground water of Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou Province, China. Results show that ground water is mainly characterized by SO₄·HCO₃-Ca·Mg and HCO₃-Ca·Mg chemical compositions. The hydrochemical characteristics of these types of water are mainly controlled by lithology of the aquifers. HCO₃- is the dominant species of DIC in ground water and has lower concentrations and more negative values of δ13CDIC in the high-flow (summer monsoon) season, as compared to the low-flow season. This indicates that DIC is relatively enriched in carbon of biological origin in the high-flow season as compared to the low-flow season and that biological activities are the predominant control on shifts of stable carbon isotope values. The evidence that the δ13CDIC values of ground water decrease with increasing concentrations of anthropogenic species shows that the carbon isotopic composition of DIC can be a useful tracer of contamination, in addition to biogeochemical cycling of inorganic carbon in ground water. Results from this study show that ground water is impacted by significant levels of contamination from human activities, especially in the urban areas, as well as the northeast and west suburbs, in Guiyang city, southwest China. Comprehending endangered species' spatial distribution in response to global climate change (GCC) is of great importance for formulating adaptive management, conservation, and restoration plans. However, it is regrettable that previous studies mainly focused on geoclimatic species, while neglected climate-sensitive subterranean taxa to a large extent, which clearly hampered the discovery of universal principles. In view of this, taking the endemic troglophile riverine fish Onychostoma macrolepis (Bleeker, 1871) as an example, we constructed a MaxEnt (maximum-entropy) model to predict how the spatial distribution of this endangered fish would respond to future climate changes (three Global Climate Models × two Shared Socio-economic Pathways × three future time nodes) based on painstakingly collected species occurrence data and a set of bioclimatic variables, including WorldClim and ENVIREM. Model results showed that variables related to temperature rather than precipitation were more important in determining the geographic distribution of this rare and endemic fish. In addition, the suitable areas and their distribution centroids of O. macrolepis would shrink (average: 20,901.75 km2) and move toward the northeast or northwest within the study area (i.e. China). Linking our results with this species' limited dispersion potential and unique habitat requirements (i.e. karst landform is essential), we thus recommended in situ conservation to protect this relict. Internal motivation is a crucial factor determining an individual's behaviour, particularly relevant to smallholders' adoption of pro-environmental agricultural practices. However, there has been limited evidence about smallholders' behavioural intention formation, specifically focusing on pro-environmental agricultural practices. Using large-scale, in-depth interview data from a sample of 549 rural farmers in Shandong province in China, we developed an integrated socio-psychological model, which integrated the value-belief-norm (VBN) theory and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) into a coherent framework and further tested by using the structural equation modelling (SEM) approach. The results show that the TPB and the VBN models can be well-integrated to examine smallholder's pro-environmental behaviours. The integrated model indicates that smallholders' value perception of environment plays a fundamental role in forming their behavioural intention. Smallholders' subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control (as the core elements in the TPB theory), and their ascribed responsibility (as a core element in the VBN theory) play a significant mediation role in shaping their behavioural intention. This result indicates that to foster smallholders' internal motivation in adopting pro-environmental practices, it is crucial to understand the value perception among farmers, and policymakers should particularly take measures to foster farmers' egoistic values, altruistic values and their biospheric values towards the environment.
