In this paper, we connect literature on civic universities and anchor institutions with the notion of visibility to explore how universities can play more engaged roles in their areas. We introduce the concept of 'just anchors', which are institutions with strategies to achieve local social, economic and epistemic justice goals through collaboration in networks of other anchors and knowledge co-production with citizens. This paper is based on data from USE-IT!, an ERDF-funded programme that developed mechanisms to build social resilience in inner-city wards of Birmingham, the second-largest city in England. Our findings show that co-production empowers citizens, and that universities are well-placed to facilitate and benefit from the outputs of this process. Based on the experience of delivering a community researcher training scheme, we reflect on the potential of universities to be more visible to, and facilitate the visibility of, marginalised groups, introducing a new theoretical concept into the literature on universities as anchor institutions. We also draw further lessons from USE-IT! to offer practice-based recommendations to other universities seeking to activate their role as just anchors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because of a series of editorial apologies for neglecting coverage of the civil rights movement, this article examines coverage of the 1963 Birmingham campaign in five prestige dailies to explore the social construction of news and the relationship between news organizations, their subjects, and their audiences. This study considers survey data that indicated regional attitudes toward civil rights and found coverage did not always reflect the views of a paper's readers. Southern newspapers tended to discredit movement leaders and their agenda, as well as to emphasize law enforcement's preparedness, while northern and western papers were sympathetic to the movement. ECCC4, held at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham on 14-16 October 2002, attracted 371 delegates from 37 countries. The Organising Committee was wholly from Corus and together with the IOM(3)personnel, who did excellent work on the administration, and the Scientific Committee, 90 papers were assembled into 17 sessions. There was also a opening plenary session with three papers, 13 posters and an exhibition with 23 stands. This paper examines the class position of 156 Birmingham first-line supervisors, and how the supervisors perceive that position. ft concludes that they occupy a class position which is only marginally superior to that of manual workers. In their perceptions, however, they range from ascribing a middle class position for themselves to a working class one. These perceptions are assessed in terms of six indicators. The less that supervisors see their role and standing in the firm falling short of what they believe to be appropriate, and the closer they identify themselves with senior management, the higher tends to be the class position they see themselves occupying. It would be an oversimplification, the paper suggests, to conclude that the supervisors studied belong in a straightforward manner either to a proletarianized middle class or to a working class group which has adopted middle class characteristics. Abstract: The technique of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT), developed at Birmingham in the early 1990s, enables a radioactively labelled tracer particle to be accurately tracked as it moves between the detectors of a “positron camera”. In 1999 the original Birmingham positron camera, which consisted of a pair of MWPCs, was replaced by a system comprising two NaI(Tl) gamma camera heads operating in coincidence. This system has been successfully used for PEPT studies of a wide range of granular and fluid flow processes. More recently a modular positron camera has been developed using a number of the bismuth germanate (BGO) block detectors from standard PET scanners (CTI ECAT 930 and 950 series). This camera has flexible geometry, is transportable, and is capable of delivering high data rates. Studies of residential sprawl have shown that longer commutes are typical for residents of these areas, but the effect of sprawling workplace locations on journey to work patterns has not yet been closely examined. This paper uses commuting data from the 1990 and 2000 Census Transportation Planning Package to examine the impact of employment sprawl on commuting, and its differing impacts on black and white workers within Birmingham, Alabama. This analysis finds that workers who commute to sprawling areas travel shorter distances, often spend less time commuting, are less likely to drive alone, and are more likely to bike and walk, though they do not earn as much as workers in urban areas. This suggests the possibility that workers may be able to reduce their commutes as more jobs relocate to sprawling areas. However, increased sprawl may result in increased commutes for black workers if they are not able to adjust their residential location, as shown by their longer commutes to jobs in sprawl locations. Network Rail is increasing the capacity of the West Coast main line north of Birmingham by doubling the number of tracks from two to four. Within the Trent Valley section of the route, the first of a pair of three-span viaducts has been constructed to carry the railway across the River Tame. The structures are each 94 m in length and comprise half-through superstructures supported on piled foundations. The current paper describes the development and detail design of these viaducts, and in particular the design requirements relating to dynamic effects caused by the passage of high-speed trains. These are some of the first bridges to have been designed to recent guidelines which require a bridge-specific dynamic analysis to be undertaken for any structure of this type. This analysis was undertaken using a finite-element program in which each bridge was modelled as a three-dimensional stiffened plate employing both thick shell and shear beam elements. Aspects of the construction of the first viaduct are discussed, including piling methods, environmental and archaeological considerations. This article details the history of Slossfield Hospital, an African American hospital and community center founded in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1937. During its New Deal-era existence it provided African American physicians institutional support for their medical practices. Additionally, as a community center, it addressed the socioeconomics of good health. This paper uses Slossfield as a case study to explore how some African Americans included the socioeconomic in their definition of public health during the New Deal, as well as to understand how these ideas were subsumed by more mainstream ideas about public health promulgated by black and white physicians and the local and federal governments. For the last seven years, a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates site in structural engineering, funded by the National Science Foundation, has operated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, 33 students from 22 colleges and universities have participated in the site. Participants are recruited nationally and have come from as far away as California and Puerto Rico. The program is intended to provide students interested in graduate studies with an introduction to research methods, and to provide students who will not continue their studies past a bachelor of science in civil engineering with a better understanding of how research provides the theoretical foundation of engineering practice. Students work individually with faculty on literature reviews, computer modeling, laboratory testing, and field research. Three students have researched structural failure case studies and the technical and ethical lessons to be learned from them. Participants also have the opportunity to tour construction sites and construction material manufacturers’ and fabricators’ facilities. During the past three years, an ethics seminar series has been added. At the end of the program, students prepare research papers and Web pages documenting their work and present their results to faculty, students, and other participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bookstart, an early intervention strategy to develop the foundations of literacy in children's early years, was developed in Birmingham 10 years ago. Virtually all the research, conducted over that time, which made it a national and international project, was quantitative in nature. This research is contextualised and reviewed in the early sections of this paper. However, the importance of the data presented here is that they are qualitative and represent the views of professionals engaged in a Bookstart project in one borough. The article shows how both qualitative evidence and quantitative data point in the same direction to the effectiveness of Bookstart as an intervention strategy to facilitate literacy learning in the early years. Information about several papers discussed at a symposium during the American Society of Animal Science Southern Section annual meeting, held on February 6, 2012, in Birmingham, Alabama, on beef cattle production, is presented. Topics include stocker cattle production models, physiology of newly received calves, and nutrition and management practices to enhance calf health. The symposium featured several experts on animal science including Curt Lacy, Darrell Rankins, and Clint Krehbiel.

The article discusses the highlights of an annual meeting of the British Dermatological Nursing Group (BDNG) and British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, Alabama.
