Sandwich panels with a core of corrugated cardboard The goal of a research project of the Institute for Steel Construction and Materials Mechanics was to determine the utilization of corrugated cardboard as a core material for sandwich panels for roof and wall cladding. In contrast to common core materials, corrugated cardboard is recyclable and consists of renewable raw materials. The bearing behaviour depends mainly on the paper types and on the orientation of the anisotropic material inside the panel. The weakest orientation has similar stiffness and strength as common core materials. However, these can be exceeded many times by other core orientations. Investigations of the most important building physical parameters have shown that the fire behaviour is slightly better than that of most PU‐sandwich panels. The thermal conductivity in the weakest core orientation is comparable to that of mineral wool, the stronger core orientations show higher thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Compared to bushings with lower voltage levels, the ±1100 kV converter valve‐side bushing has thicker radial insulation and longer axial insulation resulting in a more uneven temperature distribution and more severe electric field distortion, especially under high‐ambient‐temperature and high‐current conditions. Improving the distribution of the electro‐thermal coupled field of the bushing is critical for the safe operation of converter transformers. This study discusses the distribution of electro‐thermal coupled field of a typical bushing and proposes a new method to evaluate the conductivity of multiple capacitor layers under inhomogeneous axial temperatures. The effects of four bushing designs are investigated as per the adjustment of the capacitor screen structure, the replacement of the current‐carrying structure, and the modification of resin‐impregnated paper material. The results show that merely adjusting the capacitor screens is not feasible due to size limitations. By decreasing heat accumulation, adopting a single‐tube structure and increasing the thermal conductivity of resin‐impregnated paper material can reduce electric field distortion to a certain extent. Unlike the other three methods, hierarchically controlling the material resistance effectively balances the internal and external electric fields. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of these methods to improve the distribution of the electro‐thermal coupled field in the bushing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract In this study, an innovative thermal interface material (TIM) paper based on a composite of cellulose and graphene is investigated experimentally. Six types of commercially-available papers: a wool paper; an aqua satin; a merit paper; a new craft board; and two oriental traditional papers (Bulgyeong and Daerye) are used to fabricate the paper-graphene composites via bar coating and a slot die coating. The fabricated TIM papers are lightweight, flexible and robust against tensile strength. The in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of the TIM papers are measured using a laser-flash-method (LFM). The measured in-plane thermal conductivities are of the order of 5 W/m-K, whereas the through-plane thermal conductivities are of the order of 0.1 W/m-K. These results suggest that the addition of graphene significantly enhance the in-plane thermal conductivity of papers, while the through-plane thermal conductivities are not significantly improved. The mechanical properties of the TIM papers are also tested. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in thermal conductivity analysis of nanocellulose materials called cellulose nanopapers, and compare them with polymeric materials, including neat polymers, composites, and traditional paper. It is important to individually measure the in-plane and through-plane heat-conducting properties of two-dimensional planar materials, so steady-state and non-equilibrium methods, in particular the laser spot periodic heating radiation thermometry method, are reviewed. The structural dependency of cellulose nanopaper on thermal conduction is described in terms of the crystallite size effect, fibre orientation, and interfacial thermal resistance between fibres and small pores. Silver nanoparticles with a mean diameter of approximately 30 nm were synthesized by reduction of silver nitrate with triethanolamine in the presence of polyacrylic acid. Silver nanoparticle-based ink was prepared by dispersing silver nanoparticles into a mixture of water and ethylene glycol. The mechanism for the dispersion and aggregation of silver nanoparticles in ink is discussed. The strong electrostatic repulsions of the carboxylate anions of the adsorbed polyacrylic acid molecules disturbed the aggregation of metal particles in solutions with a high pH value (pH > 5). An inkjet printer was used to deposit this silver nanoparticle-based ink to form silver patterns on photo paper. The actual printing qualities of the silver tracks were then analyzed by variation of printing passes, sintering temperature and time. The results showed that sintering temperature and time are associated strongly with the conductivity of the inkjet-printed conductive patterns. The conductivity of printed patterns sintered at 150 °C increased to 2.1 x 107 S m-1, which was approximately one third that of bulk silver. In addition, silver tracks on paper substrate also showed better electrical performance after folding. This study demonstrated that the resulting ink-jet printed patterns can be used as conductive tracks in flexible electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In accordance with global estimations, approx. 15 million tons of residues are yearly generated from paper and pulp industry, which are traditionally used as biofuels or just disposed in landfills. However, residues composition and laws in force urge producers to search for new waste management strategies. From another point of view, the construction industry uses more than 33% of total natural resources, worldwide which has led several governments to limit the use of natural raw materials for building. In particular, fired brick industry produces yearly approx. 1600 billion bricks which represents millions of tons of natural resources consumption. Therefore, the goal is to contribute to reduce the amount of used clay. Thus, this paper explores the mineral and technological properties of brick made by using different percentages of paper pulp residues and fired at 900 °C. Results indicate that by increasing the replacement ratio, blend requires larger amounts of water which leads to a proportional increasing of shrinkage during drying. In spite of mineral transformations are not influenced by paper pulp residue, the porosity is linearly increased which leads to reduce compressive strength and thermal conductivity up to 30% for 20% of replacement ratio, in both cases. Thus, it is concluded that series made by replacing up to 10% show compressive strength above 5 MPa, water absorption beyond 20% and toxicity indexes meet the mandatory requirements.
